- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We
- 0:03Speaker 1: just talked to Dan Hurley for a few moments about
- 0:05Speaker 1: the Huskies progress this season. Now we check in with
- 0:09Speaker 1: Tom Moore, longtime assistant head coach at quinnipiack for a
- 0:13Speaker 1: decade in a new role, and we talked about this
- 0:15Speaker 1: a couple of months ago. He's a GM. There was
- 0:18Speaker 1: no such job as a GM back about two three
- 0:21Speaker 1: years ago in basketball or football or college sports in general. So, Tom,
- 0:27Speaker 1: how's it been going and have you Is it what
- 0:30Speaker 1: you thought it was gonna be.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's going well. Mike, I'm enjoying it. It's it's
- 0:39Speaker 2: it's very different than the coaching piece. It's much more administrative.
- 0:45Speaker 2: There's a lot of donor outreach, fundraising, there's a lot
- 0:52Speaker 2: of discussion with agents regarding Nil and Revshaer. There's it's
- 1:01Speaker 2: it's a whole new world and I'm I'm learning it
- 1:04Speaker 2: and challenged by it and trying to grow in it.
- 1:10Speaker 2: And it's, uh, it's it's you know, it's I'm in
- 1:14Speaker 2: Coach Hurley and I are sort of trying to almost
- 1:17Speaker 2: mold the position as we go through the year. You know,
- 1:21Speaker 2: we're trying to sort of figure out how best to
- 1:27Speaker 2: sort of break up my duties and responsibilities and how
- 1:30Speaker 2: it can be most effective and most helpful, you know,
- 1:34Speaker 2: in all in all different areas of the program.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I know, when we go on road tips, we bring
- 1:39Speaker 1: a number of donors with us and you have interactions
- 1:42Speaker 1: with all Those folks are great people. They love all
- 1:45Speaker 1: you con basketball, and they love going on those road trips.
- 1:48Speaker 1: What kind of stuff do you guys talk about. I mean,
- 1:50Speaker 1: I talk to those folks when we're at practice and
- 1:53Speaker 1: and such, the shoot arounds. I know you're you know,
- 1:56Speaker 1: having conversations constantly with them. What is that like for you?
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's been fun. I enjoy it. It's amazing, Mike,
- 2:04Speaker 2: how important Yukon basketball is to so many people in
- 2:10Speaker 2: the state and highly successful, highly wealthy people, you know,
- 2:15Speaker 2: who have been sort of champions of their industry and
- 2:19Speaker 2: have done extremely well in business and you know, in
- 2:23Speaker 2: their in their professional lives, and it's amazing, you know,
- 2:28Speaker 2: how much a team and a program can impact them.
- 2:34Speaker 2: You know, they they have such great stories about going
- 2:38Speaker 2: to games with their parents and their grandparents and how
- 2:42Speaker 2: they became Yukon fans, and you know where they were
- 2:46Speaker 2: in the first National Championship and you know, they they
- 2:51Speaker 2: it's been it's been great to sort of share in
- 2:53Speaker 2: those in those discussions and those talks. And really, Mike,
- 2:57Speaker 2: all they're looking for is is you know a little
- 2:59Speaker 2: bit of in site into the program, especially on those
- 3:03Speaker 2: donor trips as you've seen. I mean they love going
- 3:06Speaker 2: to shoot around. Oh yeah, and Coach Hurley is awesome
- 3:09Speaker 2: with them too. You know, he'll go up there and
- 3:10Speaker 2: he'll explain to them the play sheet and what we're
- 3:13Speaker 2: looking for in each game, and I mean, they can't
- 3:16Speaker 2: get enough of it. So it's been fun to sort
- 3:18Speaker 2: of open the door to the to the program and
- 3:22Speaker 2: let people sort of look inside where we've joked and
- 3:25Speaker 2: I think I've talked to you about this, Mike, like
- 3:28Speaker 2: five ten, fifteen years ago, you were trying to make
- 3:31Speaker 2: sure a boosters of donors didn't get near the program
- 3:35Speaker 2: the fear of there being a violation. Right now, you're
- 3:40Speaker 2: you know, you're really like opening the door and letting
- 3:42Speaker 2: them in and letting them sort of see how how
- 3:44Speaker 2: things are done. And it's it's been neat.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And we hear a lot about the NIL landscape right
- 3:51Speaker 1: the name, image and likeness and how athletes can benefit
- 3:55Speaker 1: from that. How does it actually work for you? For instance,
- 3:59Speaker 1: when someone come a player comes to you, uh with
- 4:02Speaker 1: his agent, I'm assuming, and wants to know how he
- 4:06Speaker 1: can benefit or she can benefit from name, image and
- 4:09Speaker 1: likeness at the University of Connecticut, how does that work exactly?
- 4:13Speaker 2: Well, you know, it really depends on a couple things.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Like it, the better the player you are and the
- 4:22Speaker 2: more success you have individually, obviously is going to drive
- 4:26Speaker 2: interest from potential sponsors and potential businesses and companies that
- 4:33Speaker 2: we'll want to work with you. The other thing is
- 4:35Speaker 2: your social media following and platform, you know, because this
- 4:39Speaker 2: is a money decision for these companies and a business
- 4:42Speaker 2: decision for them, and they want to align themselves with
- 4:46Speaker 2: student athletes that can bring back a return on their investment.
- 4:52Speaker 2: So we work with them to try to increase the
- 4:55Speaker 2: social media you know, awareness and their and their their
- 4:58Speaker 2: branding to make them more viable and more visible to
- 5:03Speaker 2: some of these to these companies. And we have people
- 5:07Speaker 2: here Shane Kelly who works here for us, Jason Beattie.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Koefer obviously is a it does a lot with it
- 5:13Speaker 2: and the people that stores Central Ben Renshaw and Mike
- 5:18Speaker 2: Burton and you know, John Greenblatt. Stuff we have. We
- 5:22Speaker 2: have people who are also helpful, very helpful in terms
- 5:26Speaker 2: of sort of outreach to companies and and explaining to them.
- 5:30Speaker 2: A lot of it is education and just explaining to
- 5:34Speaker 2: them how we feel some of our young men could
- 5:37Speaker 2: be great ambassadors for their product. And you know, then
- 5:40Speaker 2: typically what companies will do is they'll come, I'm sort
- 5:43Speaker 2: of like a middleman when it comes to the stuff
- 5:45Speaker 2: because they a lot of companies will bring deals to
- 5:48Speaker 2: us and they'll say they might want to work with
- 5:50Speaker 2: one of our guys. And then I move it along
- 5:52Speaker 2: to the players, the player or his agent, and we
- 5:57Speaker 2: you know, and and and we sort of see if
- 5:59Speaker 2: it's something that they're interest did in doing. And it's
- 6:01Speaker 2: sort of neat to see how the whole decision process goes.
- 6:05Speaker 1: All right, Tom moris with us. Take a quick time out.
- 6:08Speaker 1: We'll be back in just a moment. More of the
