- 2:25Speaker 4: Convention Center. Early coverage up and running on Charleston's ESPN
- 2:29Speaker 4: Radio one oh six point seven FM fourteen ninety am.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Normally that's the way we roll throughout the tournament, however,
- 2:36Speaker 4: we have the daytime games on ESPN and then the
- 2:38Speaker 4: evening sessions on the WCCHS network. However, today we're gonna
- 2:42Speaker 4: make a bit of a switch up, as we will
- 2:45Speaker 4: have coverage of Nitro and Ripley later this morning around
- 2:48Speaker 4: eleven o'clock or so here on on WCCHS. So we'll
- 2:53Speaker 4: be breaking away from talk line as best I understand
- 2:56Speaker 4: the programming aspect of it, to go to that Nitri
- 2:58Speaker 4: riple a Nitro Ripley game, and that game has been
- 3:00Speaker 4: sponsored by the Nitro Convention and Visitors Bureaus. So again
- 3:04Speaker 4: that'll be around eleven o'clock or so this morning and
- 3:06Speaker 4: a reminder that all four championship games can be seen
- 3:10Speaker 4: on Saturday on Metro News Television. Download that app if
- 3:13Speaker 4: you have not done so already. Coming up a little
- 3:15Speaker 4: bit later on the show, I want to talk about
- 3:17Speaker 4: a little thing called read a Palooza. It's an annual
- 3:20Speaker 4: fundraiser from the Read Aloud West Virginia folks. It's happening Thursday,
- 3:24Speaker 4: April third at the University of Charleston. Don Miller from
- 3:28Speaker 4: the Group of Joint Us to talk about that. Plus
- 3:30Speaker 4: we got news out of Morgantown. I mean, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 4: for the second consecutive day that seems to be dominated
- 3:35Speaker 4: on everyone's social media as coach Darren Derees announced late
- 3:40Speaker 4: afternoon yesterday that what had been rumored, He's going to
- 3:43Speaker 4: be heading to Indiana to be the head basketball coach
- 3:47Speaker 4: of there. This all comes following the controversy from the
- 3:51Speaker 4: press conference in WQ being left out of the tournament.
- 3:54Speaker 4: We'll talk about that a little bit later on in
- 3:56Speaker 4: the show as well. Plus your calls in text to
- 3:58Speaker 4: Welcome to big Ley Pickley Wiggly Hotline three zero four

- 4:06Speaker 4: Let's bring in our good friend now nutrition experts, all
- 4:09Speaker 4: dressed out in black today can doing the Johnny Cash? Absolutely,
- 4:14Speaker 4: look I said that when you walk in, I said,
- 4:16Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen, Johnny Cash in the form of Millie Snyder.
- 4:19Speaker 4: How you doing.
- 4:20Speaker 6: I'm doing great. How are you Dad?
- 4:21Speaker 4: I'm doing fine. Thank you for being you. See, it's
- 4:24Speaker 4: great to see you as well, because.
- 4:25Speaker 6: I can only see a part of you because we
- 4:27Speaker 6: have all this stuff in between.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, it's not like it used to be. But
- 4:32Speaker 4: maybe perhaps, yes next next time. Yes, we'll be in
- 4:37Speaker 4: the new studio, which is the building. It's the part
- 4:40Speaker 4: of the building where the old studio was, and we
- 4:43Speaker 4: will be see I'm trying to picture it in my head.
- 4:46Speaker 4: You will be sitting to my right there and there
- 4:50Speaker 4: will be cameras and so on and so. Although I
- 4:53Speaker 4: don't think the local show is going to be on camera,
- 4:54Speaker 4: I'm sorry about that. I don't think so. Thank you.
- 4:57Speaker 6: You mean I'm missing an opportunity.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Well, no, we'll have you back when a man in
- 5:00Speaker 4: I start Metro News midday. We'll take your message to
- 5:02Speaker 4: the masses.
- 5:03Speaker 6: Oh that's even better.
- 5:05Speaker 4: The across the state of way.
- 5:06Speaker 6: And by the way, my message needs to go to
- 5:08Speaker 6: the mess it does need to go. Now I have
- 5:10Speaker 6: to say I am as serious as a heart attack,
- 5:13Speaker 6: because what my whole driving forces to help people avoid
- 5:18Speaker 6: a heart attack, avoid health problems if they would change
- 5:22Speaker 6: their eating habits for something that's not just better, but
- 5:27Speaker 6: something that is proven by time, because the Mediterranean concept.
- 5:32Speaker 6: And please everybody listen up, listen. This is not a diet,
- 5:37Speaker 6: it's a way of life. You don't have to write
- 5:39Speaker 6: anything down, you don't have to weigh your food as
- 5:42Speaker 6: long as you eat Mediterranean foods that are not processed
- 5:46Speaker 6: with chemicals and the other things that go into our foods.
- 5:51Speaker 6: In fact, tomorrow in our meeting, one of the things
- 5:54Speaker 6: we're giving out is an informational is the stuff around
- 5:59Speaker 6: ultra process foods and yeah, they taste good in your mouth,
- 6:04Speaker 6: but they do damage inside your body. And that's what
- 6:08Speaker 6: we want to address by changing our eating habits and
- 6:12Speaker 6: giving up sugar. I know right now everyone's sticking their
- 6:15Speaker 6: tongue out and saying she can't be saying that. Well,
- 6:18Speaker 6: she is saying it, and sugar is not a friend.
- 6:21Speaker 6: And by the way, I like sugar like everybody else,
- 6:24Speaker 6: but it's not a friend. And I think we should
- 6:28Speaker 6: strengthen our relationships with the ones who are friends and
- 6:32Speaker 6: not the pseudo friends. And that's what we've been doing
- 6:35Speaker 6: for a long time. Because the recipe that you love
- 6:39Speaker 6: was your mother's and she got it from her mother,
- 6:42Speaker 6: and she got it from her mother. In the meantime,
- 6:45Speaker 6: the only thing that it isn't is TNT, which is
- 6:48Speaker 6: a cute word for dynamite, and it does hurt us.
- 6:52Speaker 4: But I will say this and you can. And by
- 6:55Speaker 4: the way, I've got a couple of texts for you
- 6:57Speaker 4: ready to go here. I will say this. I think
- 7:01Speaker 4: sometimes when we compare, when you talk about sugar specifically
- 7:06Speaker 4: and things of that nature, sometimes maybe it's unfair to
- 7:10Speaker 4: compare lifestyles from one hundred years ago what they are
- 7:14Speaker 4: now because those people, yeah, they did consume a lot
- 7:18Speaker 4: of sugar, but they also did something and they didn't
- 7:21Speaker 4: have the ultra process foods.
- 7:22Speaker 6: Well, that's true too. But also, and that argument has
- 7:26Speaker 6: been given to me many many times. Sure, my grandfather
- 7:29Speaker 6: worked all day long out in the garden in the house,
- 7:34Speaker 6: but the meantime he died at age fifty four because
- 7:38Speaker 6: he ate incorrectly. Although he was active and he really
- 7:43Speaker 6: put in more than a day's work, he still put
- 7:46Speaker 6: the bad foods in his body, and it did the
- 7:49Speaker 6: same thing to his body that it does to our
- 7:53Speaker 6: bodies today. That piece hasn't been changed based on just
- 7:58Speaker 6: hard work. There are many people who do hard labor.
- 8:03Speaker 6: But if they eat wrong and they throw down fast food,
- 8:06Speaker 6: and they throw down foods that are poorly put together,
- 8:11Speaker 6: it's the same endgame. And we mustn't kid ourselves simply
- 8:16Speaker 6: by saying well because they worked hard. Yes, back literally,
- 8:21Speaker 6: they didn't have some of the conveniences that would dig
- 8:25Speaker 6: up the ground, that would fix the soil for planting,
- 8:29Speaker 6: and now there are machines that actually do the planting.
- 8:33Speaker 6: And so my argument is not just to win an argument.
- 8:37Speaker 6: I don't want to just win an argument. I want
- 8:39Speaker 6: to help people change lives. That's what I want to do.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Well, Can I read this text here? Because this is
- 8:45Speaker 4: pretty cool. This is a text that we got here,
- 8:47Speaker 4: And I'm going to only read this text because I
- 8:49Speaker 4: know that all the bosses are upstairs in a meeting
- 8:51Speaker 4: right now. All I mean, the big guys in the president.
- 8:55Speaker 4: I need to get nerds, the president of the company,
- 8:57Speaker 4: mister Pellettier's in the building today and he's there with
- 9:00Speaker 4: all of the sales weasels upstairs right now, so I
- 9:03Speaker 4: know they're not listening. So I can read this text.
- 9:05Speaker 4: It says Millie's message needs to go to the masses
- 9:08Speaker 4: before the food we eat goes to our asses.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Wow, thank you whoever you are.
- 9:13Speaker 4: See. I can say that because they're upstairs. I got
- 9:15Speaker 4: that they're not listening to me.
- 9:17Speaker 6: And yeah, people go on vacation and they go on
- 9:20Speaker 6: a cruis. A woman came over to me sometime ago
- 9:22Speaker 6: and she said, what am I going to do? The
- 9:24Speaker 6: ship that I'm going to be on serves food twenty
- 9:27Speaker 6: four hours a day. And I looked at her and
- 9:29Speaker 6: I said, so, what does that mean? Because it's available
- 9:33Speaker 6: twenty four hours.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Of food in your refrigerator twenty four hours a day.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Two exactly right. So that means that you have to
- 9:38Speaker 6: walk around with one of those feeding bags tied over
- 9:41Speaker 6: your face, so that you know, people miss a lick.
- 9:43Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:44Speaker 4: I got a good friend of mine who is really
- 9:47Speaker 4: into nutrition. I mean, he works out, he has been
- 9:49Speaker 4: as long as I've known. He's actually a former boss
- 9:51Speaker 4: of mine. And you'll hear a cheap plug on the
- 9:54Speaker 4: on the Metro News coverage of the basketball games tomorrow,
- 9:58Speaker 4: Speedy Babins. He's as long as I've known Speedy, he
- 10:01Speaker 4: is loved that name. Yeah, well I think it's not
- 10:03Speaker 4: his real name. But Larry Speedy Bevans is a nutrition
- 10:08Speaker 4: expert and it has been. I went to work for
- 10:10Speaker 4: him in nineteen ninety three on heving. He was then
- 10:13Speaker 4: as well he may be listening today. So but but anyway, Uh,
- 10:18Speaker 4: he has always always preached about about buffets and things
- 10:22Speaker 4: of that nature because what happens is, and I'm as
- 10:25Speaker 4: guilty as anybody else.
- 10:27Speaker 6: I'm cheap.
- 10:28Speaker 4: And if I if I pay my whatever feed to
- 10:30Speaker 4: go to one of these giant trough restaurants, I feel
- 10:34Speaker 4: like I should get my money's worth. And I'm not
- 10:35Speaker 4: gonna go and just get one plate. And I'm like, well,
- 10:37Speaker 4: I may be full, but you know I've paid thirty
- 10:41Speaker 4: bucks for this. I'm getting my money's worth. And that's
- 10:43Speaker 4: and and that's why he always said stay away from buffets.
- 10:48Speaker 6: Thank you. I like him already. I don't know him,
- 10:51Speaker 6: but he's telling us the truth. And there are people
- 10:53Speaker 6: who have gone to buffets and before that plate is
- 10:57Speaker 6: even clean, it's re filled, and not just once, but
- 11:02Speaker 6: two and three times. And I promise you, Dave, they
- 11:05Speaker 6: never tasted the first plate, the second, or the third,
- 11:08Speaker 6: because they're just eating to get food in their body.
- 11:12Speaker 6: And I've seen it. I've seen it over the years
- 11:15Speaker 6: of my life. Yeah, they're fun, they're fun to go to,
- 11:19Speaker 6: but they're not fun what we do to ourselves because
- 11:23Speaker 6: the size that we have created. By the way, God
- 11:27Speaker 6: didn't do this. God didn't say, hmm, and he shall
- 11:30Speaker 6: grow up to be three hundred pounds. That's not the
- 11:33Speaker 6: way it worked.
- 11:34Speaker 4: The way it works, all right. So let's talk about
- 11:37Speaker 4: these classes. Because you offer these classes wins. The wares
- 11:40Speaker 4: give us all.
- 11:41Speaker 6: That goodwill, prosperity center, the most beautiful meeting rooms, and
- 11:45Speaker 6: also complimentary wise, we provide water for everybody plus hot coffee,
- 11:51Speaker 6: and there's no charge for the accruitiments that they offer us.
- 11:56Speaker 6: And there is a nominal fee to join and a
- 11:59Speaker 6: weekly and we give great information, class activity and interaction
- 12:05Speaker 6: among ourselves and group support. And I go back to
- 12:09Speaker 6: what I brought to West Virginia, which was the weight
- 12:12Speaker 6: Watchers concept and the thing that made it work was
- 12:16Speaker 6: group support. Now weight Watchers is in a whole different mindset.
- 12:21Speaker 6: Now everything is online, and what's missing is being able
- 12:25Speaker 6: to look at each other and share what's going on
- 12:28Speaker 6: for one and the other and so on and so forth.
- 12:32Speaker 6: And so group support means a lot, it.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Does, and plus you can learn a lot from each
- 12:37Speaker 4: other too. Well, I tried this or I tried that exactly.
- 12:39Speaker 6: And tomorrow we're actually going to be tasting homemade Old Ways,
- 12:45Speaker 6: which is the name of the company that supports our
- 12:47Speaker 6: information granola that made yesterday at home and we're bringing
- 12:54Speaker 6: it in tomorrow.
- 12:55Speaker 4: I love some granola. Well you shall have some, Okay.
- 12:58Speaker 4: We was gonna say you could have brought me some today,
- 12:59Speaker 4: I could have, yeah, but you didn't.
- 13:01Speaker 6: I didn't, I know, But I got another day or two.
- 13:04Speaker 6: I hope, hope.
- 13:06Speaker 4: It is always a pleasure to have you on the show, now,
- 13:09Speaker 4: is wee? And to tomorrow is the first day of
- 13:11Speaker 4: spring officially it is, yeah, like six oh three. I
- 13:14Speaker 4: think tomorrow morning is the first day.
- 13:15Speaker 6: I'll probably be up.
- 13:17Speaker 4: I know I will be all right. So where might
- 13:20Speaker 4: we see you out at about? Because you've kind of
- 13:22Speaker 4: altered things, you know, I mean this summer in the spring,
- 13:25Speaker 4: will you be out out doing stuff?
- 13:27Speaker 7: Oh?
- 13:27Speaker 6: Absolutely, I'm gonna. Well, you know, one of the things
- 13:30Speaker 6: I'm happiest about. I do have a not great back
- 13:33Speaker 6: and I've been using a cane. But i have a
- 13:36Speaker 6: great trainer that I go to at Nautilus and he
- 13:40Speaker 6: has helped me get stronger. So the good news is
- 13:43Speaker 6: I don't walk with a cane anymore. A little bit
- 13:45Speaker 6: of weakness here and there, but I got a couple
- 13:49Speaker 6: of friends every now and then they'll give me an
- 13:50Speaker 6: arm to lean on. But the fact that without a
- 13:55Speaker 6: cane and now I want to start looking at some
- 13:58Speaker 6: trips that I can take, and I don't want to
- 14:00Speaker 6: have that burden of carrying a cane or slowing a
- 14:03Speaker 6: group down if I'm with them. But I'm still going
- 14:05Speaker 6: to be here and I'm going to take care of
- 14:06Speaker 6: my group, and I'm not going too far away.
- 14:10Speaker 4: All right, Millie Snyder, it's always a pleasure to talk
- 14:13Speaker 4: to you.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Thank you, and it's great for me to be with you. Dave,

- 17:12Speaker 4: cover it at nauseum, but I'm going to get in
- 17:15Speaker 4: a little bit about what a forty eight hour period
- 17:17Speaker 4: it's been for the West Virginia University basketball team. They
- 17:20Speaker 4: go on Sunday night from you know, not making the
- 17:23Speaker 4: tournament and then the hooplah with the press conference with
- 17:26Speaker 4: the governor and the Attorney General on Monday, and then
- 17:30Speaker 4: last night it was announced that coach Dereese is leaving
- 17:33Speaker 4: to go to Indiana. So we'll get into that a
- 17:35Speaker 4: little bit later on. Buls I got plenty of other
- 17:38Speaker 4: texts to get to as well. The event is called
- 17:40Speaker 4: Rita Palooza. It's an annual fundraiser for the Read Aloud
- 17:43Speaker 4: West Virginia program, happening Thursday, April third, five thirty till
- 17:47Speaker 4: seven thirty at the Erma Bird Gallery on the campus
- 17:49Speaker 4: of the University of Charleston. Don Miller's with the program.
- 17:51Speaker 4: She joins us now in the Jared Construction Studios. Don,
- 17:54Speaker 4: good morning, Welcome to the show.
- 17:55Speaker 10: Good morning, thank you for being here, Thanks for having
- 17:57Speaker 10: me back.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Did you when you were in camp read Millie Snyder
- 18:00Speaker 4: out in the hall, did you get some of that
- 18:02Speaker 4: Millie like rub it off on you about all the things,
- 18:05Speaker 4: and you know, because she's kind of a kind of
- 18:06Speaker 4: a big old personality.
- 18:08Speaker 10: Millie is great. I've known her for years.
- 18:09Speaker 4: That's what I said, you said in the holiday and
- 18:11Speaker 4: seen her a long time. What's what's your all story?
- 18:13Speaker 4: How do you know Millie? I mean, everybody knows Mille.
- 18:15Speaker 10: Decades ago.
- 18:16Speaker 11: I was a newspaper reporter and I interviewed Millie and
- 18:19Speaker 11: and yeah, everybody knows Millie.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Everybody knows me. I explained the program overall before we
- 18:24Speaker 4: get to the specific event Read Aloud West Virginia talk
- 18:27Speaker 4: about the program.
- 18:28Speaker 10: Sure, thank you.
- 18:29Speaker 11: Read Aloud West Virginia as a homegrown West Virginia organization,
- 18:32Speaker 11: as you know, and we motivate kids to read for
- 18:35Speaker 11: fun because when kids read for pleasure, they can't help
- 18:38Speaker 11: but get better at it. There's all kinds of interesting
- 18:40Speaker 11: science on this, including what we're increasingly learning to understand.
- 18:45Speaker 11: One of the biggest factors in reading comprehension is background knowledge.
- 18:52Speaker 11: So if a child is interested in a subject, whether
- 18:54Speaker 11: it's dinosaurs or cars or whatever, and they read books
- 18:57Speaker 11: on that subject, they build background knowledge. And then when
- 19:00Speaker 11: they go to school and they get these good lessons
- 19:02Speaker 11: at school, all that background knowledge comes to play and
- 19:05Speaker 11: they're reading scores just climb, climb, Climb.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Does it matter in your opinion whether kids are reading
- 19:12Speaker 4: actual hard books like we grew up on or if
- 19:16Speaker 4: they're reading them in digitally, because there's a lot of
- 19:19Speaker 4: I say that because there's a lot of science that
- 19:21Speaker 4: says that you know, And we talked about cell phones
- 19:23Speaker 4: in the classroom. On the show yesterday, there's a lot
- 19:26Speaker 4: of science that says that it's a lot better for
- 19:29Speaker 4: them not to read it online. But then there's also
- 19:32Speaker 4: science that says, well, it really doesn't matter.
- 19:34Speaker 6: That's right.
- 19:35Speaker 11: It were you, and it might matter depending on the
- 19:38Speaker 11: age for the kid or the kid, that's right. So
- 19:42Speaker 11: the early indications are that print is better, and the
- 19:45Speaker 11: younger you are, the better it is. Screens are not
- 19:48Speaker 11: good for us. And the earlier, the longer you can
- 19:52Speaker 11: delay exposing children to screens, the better for them.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Are you listening parents in restaurants right now that give
- 19:58Speaker 4: your kid a phone to keep them How much damage
- 20:01Speaker 4: you're doing?
- 20:02Speaker 6: Editorial? Okay, okay, so be easy. People have to get
- 20:05Speaker 6: through the day.
- 20:07Speaker 10: Got some grace here.
- 20:09Speaker 11: But we do know some really smart cognitive scientists have
- 20:12Speaker 11: been studying our brains and studying kids' brains and what
- 20:15Speaker 11: happens when we expose ourselves to screens. It actually changes
- 20:19Speaker 11: how our brains work, as opposed to how when we
- 20:22Speaker 11: expose babies and young children to print and pictures on
- 20:27Speaker 11: a page. Now, I have this conversation about twice a
- 20:30Speaker 11: week because I'll go do a presentation and middle schoolers
- 20:33Speaker 11: will ask me, and adults will ask me, and teachers
- 20:36Speaker 11: will ask me, and parents will ask me. And the
- 20:40Speaker 11: technology is so new we have a limited amount information
- 20:45Speaker 11: about it. The early indications are that babies, toddlers, preschoolers,
- 20:50Speaker 11: elementary kids do better with print.
- 20:53Speaker 10: Adults also do better with print.
- 20:55Speaker 11: But I'm going to tell you I can carry more
- 20:58Speaker 11: electronic books in my bag than I can and paper books.
- 21:01Speaker 11: But I learned to read before all this technology, so
- 21:04Speaker 11: my skills are pretty well established. So that early indication
- 21:09Speaker 11: is possibly that it's not as hard on us as
- 21:12Speaker 11: adults as it is on the little ones.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Where are we And I'll get to your event momentarily,
- 21:17Speaker 4: But this kind of stuff fascinates where are we on
- 21:20Speaker 4: reading comprehension because we hear all these studies that come
- 21:23Speaker 4: out about how West Virginia is lagging behind other states,
- 21:27Speaker 4: and then we hear how the United States is lagging
- 21:29Speaker 4: behind other countries, not only on reading. Sometimes it tests
- 21:31Speaker 4: to do with maths or science or things of that nature. Overall,
- 21:35Speaker 4: are we getting better?
- 21:37Speaker 10: We are getting better.
- 21:38Speaker 11: There's some good things happening, There was some there were
- 21:41Speaker 11: some poor methods that became popular twenty thirty years ago
- 21:44Speaker 11: that have been shown to really not be good for kids.
- 21:49Speaker 10: Some people who went to school forty fifty years ago.
- 21:52Speaker 11: We'll be happy to know that the people in education
- 21:55Speaker 11: have figured out that you really do have to have
- 21:58Speaker 11: intentional instruction that include dudes sounding outwards. There's a lot
- 22:02Speaker 11: more to it than that, but it but there are
- 22:05Speaker 11: across the state working on improving that, and it is
- 22:11Speaker 11: it takes time. Things are not done at the same
- 22:13Speaker 11: pace everywhere. But I'm seeing improvements in the schools we're in,
- 22:18Speaker 11: the people we interact with. I am seeing a lot
- 22:21Speaker 11: of good changes. So West Virginia actually bounced back from
- 22:27Speaker 11: the when the schools were closed during COVID and then
- 22:30Speaker 11: all the test scores tanked, which was to be expected
- 22:34Speaker 11: if they if they didn't go down, it would be
- 22:37Speaker 11: an indication that they weren't getting anything at school right.
- 22:40Speaker 11: So but the West Virginia bounced back from that, and
- 22:42Speaker 11: I think West Virginia is now poised to see reading
- 22:45Speaker 11: scores steadily climb as these improved methods become regular become
- 22:52Speaker 11: widely established at schools around the state.
- 22:54Speaker 4: It is interesting to hear you say that when you
- 22:56Speaker 4: said those of us that are not you, but I'm
- 23:00Speaker 4: older than you. But but but but those of us
- 23:02Speaker 4: that went to school in forty fifty years ago, and
- 23:06Speaker 4: I think, hey, wait, that's me. That's me. That's right,
- 23:09Speaker 4: that that they're they're starting to see that maybe the
- 23:14Speaker 4: quote unquote old ways weren't so bad after all, and
- 23:16Speaker 4: that in that true of society in general. Sometimes sometimes
- 23:19Speaker 4: we look back, we say, really, it wasn't as bad
- 23:22Speaker 4: as what we what we thought it was. Let's talk
- 23:23Speaker 4: about this event April thirty.
- 23:26Speaker 10: You see, thank you. Yes, this is Rita Palooza.
- 23:28Speaker 11: This is our big fundraiser, friend raiser. It is a
- 23:31Speaker 11: nice afterwork party. Tickets are forty five dollars. We have
- 23:35Speaker 11: some amazing sponsors who allow us. That makes it possible
- 23:38Speaker 11: for us to put this on, so that so that
- 23:40Speaker 11: the money raised we have a little wine pule. The
- 23:44Speaker 11: sponsors make this possible. At the top of the list
- 23:47Speaker 11: is in Cova, followed by Moses Auto Group, United Bank,
- 23:52Speaker 11: the Elliott Foundation.
- 23:53Speaker 10: These sponsors really understand, as.
- 23:56Speaker 11: All Read Aloud supporters do, that reading well is education,
- 24:00Speaker 11: for sure, but it's also healthcare, and it's also economic development.
- 24:05Speaker 10: And the theme this year gets to that.
- 24:07Speaker 11: It's the theme this year is a ticket to anywhere,
- 24:09Speaker 11: because reading literally can take you anywhere while you're reading.
- 24:13Speaker 10: And then also in life you.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Mentioned your sponsors there and in COVID Moses and some
- 24:17Speaker 4: of the other ones in there, are there still opportunities available.
- 24:21Speaker 10: The sponsors at this point there are there are.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Selet to us.
- 24:27Speaker 11: Our sponsors make it possible for us to have a
- 24:30Speaker 11: thousand some volunteers out around the state and manage that.
- 24:34Speaker 11: They make it possible for us to give away thirty
- 24:37Speaker 11: thousand books to children last year.
- 24:39Speaker 10: And we are a lean little organization.
- 24:45Speaker 11: We have four staffers and about a thousand volunteers, and
- 24:49Speaker 11: we save paper and we save I mean, we try
- 24:53Speaker 11: and put as much of our resources as we can
- 24:56Speaker 11: into books for kids and getting readers and run of
- 25:00Speaker 11: kids and move pushing the mission to motivate kids to
- 25:03Speaker 11: read for fun.
- 25:04Speaker 4: And as far as you know, the needing of sponsors
- 25:07Speaker 4: and you mentioned that the big ones, but individual sponsors
- 25:10Speaker 4: are always welcome. Community organizations, your rotary Kawanas, anybody like
- 25:14Speaker 4: that could probably get involved in.
- 25:15Speaker 3: This as well.
- 25:16Speaker 10: That's right.
- 25:17Speaker 11: And if somebody wants to just get involved and see
- 25:20Speaker 11: how it goes, get to know us more, they can
- 25:23Speaker 11: find us at our website read aloud wv dot org.
- 25:25Speaker 11: You can buy tickets there, you can volunteer to be
- 25:28Speaker 11: a reader, you can get more information. The party should
- 25:33Speaker 11: be nice. It's a couple hours after work, so it's
- 25:36Speaker 11: low stress. You don't have to change clothes. You just
- 25:39Speaker 11: you don't have to dress up. You just come and
- 25:42Speaker 11: enjoy some fellowship with some friends. There's a wine pool
- 25:46Speaker 11: that's gotten very popular the last few years.
- 25:48Speaker 4: Explain a wine pool to me.
- 25:50Speaker 11: So we get volunteers, we get donors who give us
- 25:52Speaker 11: bottles of wine, and each one is worth at least
- 25:55Speaker 11: twenty dollars, but many of them are.
- 25:56Speaker 10: Worth thirty or forty or fifty dollars.
- 25:58Speaker 11: And then at the event, you buy a wine pool
- 26:01Speaker 11: ticket and you get a random bottle of wine. So
- 26:04Speaker 11: you're at the very least you're gonna get your twenty
- 26:06Speaker 11: dollars worth back, but you might get one of the
- 26:09Speaker 11: more expensive bottles of wine, which is always fun and
- 26:11Speaker 11: creates a nice little pardon.
- 26:13Speaker 10: The pun creates a nice little buzz there.
- 26:17Speaker 4: You said that, not me.
- 26:18Speaker 10: I'm sorry.
- 26:19Speaker 4: It's all good. It's all good. And by the way,
- 26:21Speaker 4: I will say this, if you've never had a chance
- 26:23Speaker 4: to visit the Irma Bird Center there with this is
- 26:28Speaker 4: being held. That's a beautiful venue.
- 26:30Speaker 10: I think it's the most beautiful room in town.
- 26:31Speaker 4: It is. It's very very I went there for the
- 26:33Speaker 4: first for an event a couple of years ago. I'd
- 26:35Speaker 4: never never been there either, and I went. I was like, man,
- 26:38Speaker 4: I didn't know about this. I mean, University Charleston's got
- 26:41Speaker 4: a nice little gem there. They do Jim being ge
- 26:44Speaker 4: by the way right.
- 26:45Speaker 11: And all the art in that room is by women artists.
- 26:49Speaker 11: And then the light that comes in the windows.
- 26:51Speaker 10: It's just so beautiful.
- 26:52Speaker 11: It's the room where the old library was on campus
- 26:55Speaker 11: before they built the new one.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Well, Donna, it's always pleasure I have on the show.

- 33:02Speaker 4: and Brad retweeted it, but the amendment, says Brad, was
- 33:06Speaker 4: what really made that change, and there was a separate
- 33:08Speaker 4: vote on the amendment. And he goes on to say,
- 33:12Speaker 4: this is Brad, that maybe Pushkin has a role call
- 33:14Speaker 4: on the amendment, but I do not. Also, another friend
- 33:19Speaker 4: of the program who I reached out to said it
- 33:22Speaker 4: was a voice vote in committee, and there was no
- 33:25Speaker 4: way to know unless you were there in person. Role
- 33:29Speaker 4: call was not demanded. And this person goes on to say,
- 33:33Speaker 4: the Health Committee offered a strike and insert amendment and
- 33:35Speaker 4: remove the exemptions voice vote adoption. When it gets the
- 33:38Speaker 4: second reading on the floor, the effort to amend the
- 33:41Speaker 4: exemptions back into the bill will be fierce, says a texture.
- 33:45Speaker 4: So I hope that helped out a little bit, but
- 33:48Speaker 4: to a bottom line from what I understand. And then
- 33:51Speaker 4: Brad and the other person, my inside sources, who shall

- 34:59Speaker 4: to my interview with Don Miller. Our parents give us
- 35:02Speaker 4: quarters to go play pinball and video games and smoke
- 35:05Speaker 4: field restaurant game rooms. We turned out great as a texture.
- 35:10Speaker 4: Well you know, I uh, I will say yeah, I
- 35:16Speaker 4: was part of that part of that generation too. I
- 35:19Speaker 4: guess that grew up with things like that, especially the
- 35:22Speaker 4: smoke field part. Some cigarette smoked today would damn near
- 35:25Speaker 4: kill me. I'm not gonna lie to you, and I'll
- 35:27Speaker 4: tell you a quick story. A couple of weeks ago,
- 35:30Speaker 4: my wife and I were traveling and there was a
- 35:34Speaker 4: certain restaurant not in this area, a certain restaurant, and
- 35:38Speaker 4: we wanted to go in and grab a quick bite
- 35:40Speaker 4: to eat. Well, it was a restaurant slash bar, but
- 35:44Speaker 4: we were there at like twelve or one o'clock in
- 35:46Speaker 4: the afternoon on a Saturday, and so I had eaten
- 35:51Speaker 4: at this restaurant before. She had not, and so I said, well,
- 35:54Speaker 4: let's go try this place. And so we go in
- 35:57Speaker 4: and open up the door. And I guess because we
- 35:59Speaker 4: were the only people in the place that the staff
- 36:03Speaker 4: had no issue with smoking, because they probably were thinking, well,
- 36:07Speaker 4: we're getting ready for the dinner crowd. Who in the
- 36:09Speaker 4: right mind comes to a bar slash lounge to eat
- 36:11Speaker 4: lunch on at one o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. That
- 36:13Speaker 4: would be me and my wife. And so we walked
- 36:17Speaker 4: in it, took one step and walked right back out
- 36:19Speaker 4: the door. Because I got girly lungs these days, man,
- 36:22Speaker 4: I can't handle it. I cannot handle cigarette smoke at all.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Little side note there in case you were wondering, if
- 36:27Speaker 4: you're thinking about lighting a cigarette around me, please don't.
- 36:30Speaker 4: And what's interesting about that was when I got into radio,
- 36:34Speaker 4: I was the only person in the entire building in
- 36:38Speaker 4: nineteen eighty eight, at seventeen years old, at the radio station,
- 36:41Speaker 4: where I started, I was the only person that did
- 36:44Speaker 4: not smoke, right down to the janitors, to the secretary
- 36:47Speaker 4: of the salespeople, all the everybody smoked. And it didn't
- 36:50Speaker 4: seem to bother me then, But gosh, I cannot stand
- 36:53Speaker 4: it now. So Engine, in case you were wondering, Texas Boy,
- 36:56Speaker 4: the governor and the Attorney General looked bad after North
- 36:59Speaker 4: Carolina one the game going away. We all know that
- 37:02Speaker 4: WVU was in that game. They would have blown it
- 37:05Speaker 4: and lost, says at Texas text says, why are they
- 37:09Speaker 4: sniffing the seats? Okay, Texas day, We've got a solution
- 37:17Speaker 4: to allow kids to work at thirteen to fourteen. Let's
- 37:19Speaker 4: just be like the Amish. Let them drop out of
- 37:22Speaker 4: school in the fourth grade and go to work. Because
- 37:25Speaker 4: the legislature has destroyed public education and they're taking books
- 37:28Speaker 4: out of libraries. They don't have internet on phones and computers.
- 37:31Speaker 4: They read what they want, says a Texter. So the
- 37:38Speaker 4: big story again seems to revolve around sports. Yesterday it
- 37:43Speaker 4: was the comments made by Governor Morrissey and Attorney General
- 37:49Speaker 4: McCuskey about WV being left out of the NCAA tournament. Now,
- 37:53Speaker 4: those comments, of course were made on Monday, but you
- 37:56Speaker 4: know we talked about them. The train actually had McCuskey on
- 37:59Speaker 4: the show, yes, and he was also on talk Line,
- 38:01Speaker 4: and Governor Morrissey will be on with the talk Line
- 38:04Speaker 4: today as well. And now comes word not really that
- 38:09Speaker 4: shocking that after one year, Darren Devrees is bolting Morgantown
- 38:14Speaker 4: for Indiana, Greg Carey and end depth story posted about
- 38:18Speaker 4: this morning wv metronews dot com. This is the third
- 38:21Speaker 4: time in twenty one months that WVU will be on
- 38:26Speaker 4: the hunt for a new men's basketball coach. Now interesting
- 38:32Speaker 4: were the comments that WVU Athletic Director Rind Baker made, who,
- 38:36Speaker 4: in this statement said, and I've shortened it a little
- 38:38Speaker 4: bit for airtime, but in this statement said quote, I
- 38:41Speaker 4: made it clear to him, meaning the coach, that WVU
- 38:44Speaker 4: is committed to invest in him and to provide him
- 38:47Speaker 4: the resources needed to compete in the Big twelve and nationally. Ultimately, though,
- 38:53Speaker 4: he decided to move on, and I want to thank
- 38:55Speaker 4: him for that, says the texture. Now did he mean
- 38:58Speaker 4: I want to thank him for more be on or
- 39:00Speaker 4: to thank him for his time? I think he probably
- 39:02Speaker 4: met his time spent there at WU. And when I
- 39:06Speaker 4: read into ren Baker's statement there, I mean to me,
- 39:08Speaker 4: it says, look, we were willing to give you what
- 39:12Speaker 4: you felt you needed, but you left anyway. That's the
- 39:20Speaker 4: way I read it. And that's one of the things
- 39:21Speaker 4: when coaches leave, whether it's West Virginia or Marshall or
- 39:25Speaker 4: any other program, that they say as well, you know,
- 39:28Speaker 4: or when they're wane whether they want to go to
- 39:30Speaker 4: a particular school, one of the things they always look
- 39:33Speaker 4: at is the facilities. You know, what kind of facilities
- 39:36Speaker 4: are you going to give me? I need an indoor
- 39:37Speaker 4: practice facility, I need all these other things. And the
- 39:41Speaker 4: way I read it from Ren Baker was is like, hey,
- 39:43Speaker 4: we were willing to give you what you want, but
- 39:45Speaker 4: you left anyway. That was my read. The Mountaineers went
- 39:49Speaker 4: nineteen and thirteen and they had ten wins into Big
- 39:52Speaker 4: twelve and a couple, if you'll recall, a couple of
- 39:56Speaker 4: big time non conference wins over Gonzaga and Arizona, and
- 40:00Speaker 4: then after being left out of the Big Dance, they
- 40:03Speaker 4: declined to take part in any other postseason tournaments. The
- 40:09Speaker 4: Indiana job was once one of the most coveted positions
- 40:15Speaker 4: and programs in the country. I mean, you think about
- 40:19Speaker 4: it's Indiana. You know Bobby Knight and all that went
- 40:21Speaker 4: along with it. That's been a long time since then.
- 40:24Speaker 4: As Greg Carrey's story points out at the website, the
- 40:26Speaker 4: Hoosiers have made the NCAA tournament only twice since twenty
- 40:30Speaker 4: seventeen and have had four Sweet sixteen appearances four since
- 40:35Speaker 4: nineteen ninety four. And now to the money, Devrees had
- 40:41Speaker 4: a five year deal with a salary of two point
- 40:44Speaker 4: eight million dollars this season. Had he stayed, his salary
- 40:50Speaker 4: would have gone up one hundred grand over the next
- 40:54Speaker 4: four years. Now now that he's gone off to one
- 40:57Speaker 4: big John Mellencamp video in India, Yanha, he will owe
- 41:02Speaker 4: back thirty seven and a half percent of his remaining contract.
- 41:07Speaker 4: So at least the Golden Blue is he is going
- 41:11Speaker 4: to get something back. So I guess the question is
- 41:16Speaker 4: what's next. It's been a rough couple of years for
- 41:19Speaker 4: Mountaineer basketball. You know them think about it. Some have
- 41:23Speaker 4: said they want John Beeline back and others, and you
- 41:29Speaker 4: knew this was coming. The cries are going out to
- 41:34Speaker 4: bring coach Huggins back. I don't know about that myself.
- 41:41Speaker 4: I mean, I will say this. From all accounts, Huggs
- 41:44Speaker 4: has done a good job of getting his head on
- 41:46Speaker 4: right and he seems to be doing well. I actually
- 41:50Speaker 4: ran into him at an event last year in Morgantown,
- 41:54Speaker 4: and this was after he all the incident in Pittsburgh
- 41:57Speaker 4: and the whole deal, and he had resigned or left
- 42:00Speaker 4: the program, you know whatever. And he looked like the
- 42:03Speaker 4: old Bob Huggins to me. And when I say the
- 42:05Speaker 4: old Bob Huggins, I don't mean that in an derogatory way.
- 42:08Speaker 4: He didn't have a drink in his hand. He was
- 42:10Speaker 4: drinking a night coke. I think what I saw him
- 42:11Speaker 4: at this particular function I was at, and he was,
- 42:14Speaker 4: you know, jovial and kind of laughing with the crowd
- 42:17Speaker 4: and so on and so forth. And so there's a
- 42:20Speaker 4: lot of people that want Hugs back, make no mistake
- 42:22Speaker 4: about it. I just don't know that that would be
- 42:27Speaker 4: the right move in my opinion. And I was thinking
- 42:33Speaker 4: about this earlier this morning. From the time that I
- 42:36Speaker 4: was a kid, through my teenage years, college years into adulthood,
- 42:42Speaker 4: when you talked by WVU, you automatically thought Gail Catlet
- 42:49Speaker 4: and don Neelan, they and it seemed like they were
- 42:52Speaker 4: there forever, you know. Like I said, I was a
- 42:54Speaker 4: kid when they were both hired, and they took me
- 42:57Speaker 4: through my teenage high school years. When I started working
- 43:00Speaker 4: in radio and running West Virginia University ball games, it
- 43:05Speaker 4: was Kneelan and it was Catlan, you know, and it
- 43:07Speaker 4: seemed like they were there a long time. But I
- 43:09Speaker 4: think the days of having coaches that stick around for
- 43:13Speaker 4: several years maybe long gone. I'm hopeful though that with
- 43:20Speaker 4: rich Rod back in Morgantown, and I didn't know whether
- 43:22Speaker 4: that was the right and I still don't know. Nobody
- 43:23Speaker 4: knows whether it was the right call or not. I
- 43:25Speaker 4: was initially for it, but now that he's back in Morgantown,
- 43:30Speaker 4: and for that matter, let me bringing the alma mater here, Marshall.
- 43:34Speaker 4: Now that you've got Tony Gibson and Marshall, and I'll
- 43:37Speaker 4: throw Marshall basketball coach Corney Jackson in there as well.
- 43:40Speaker 4: At least now you have coaches in place that I
- 43:43Speaker 4: think get the culture of their respective schools. And with
- 43:46Speaker 4: Tony Gibson at Marshall, you get someone who is a
- 43:49Speaker 4: West Virginia, West Virginia being from Boone County about an
- 43:52Speaker 4: hour hour or so away from Huntington and Corney Jackson
- 43:56Speaker 4: of o'kill and of course rich Rod and you know,
- 44:01Speaker 4: you get people I think that get the culture of
- 44:04Speaker 4: these schools, which I think is important. It's so hard.
- 44:07Speaker 4: I mean, put yourself in their position. If you were
- 44:10Speaker 4: a coach and you suddenly had to go coach in Mississippi,
- 44:13Speaker 4: are you going to get it? Or a utah? You
- 44:15Speaker 4: know something, especially in smaller areas. West Virginia is a
- 44:18Speaker 4: rural area, you get that kind of thing, you know,
- 44:21Speaker 4: I don't know, I don't know. Wilson and Meadows will
- 44:24Speaker 4: cover this more on talk Line, and I am told
- 44:26Speaker 4: an emergency edition of Three Guys was taped last night,
- 44:30Speaker 4: so see what happens there. Tex says Rinn Baker was
- 44:33Speaker 4: clearly disappointed in Darren DeVries as as we're almost all
- 44:37Speaker 4: basketball people in West Virginia. I don't wish him ill,
- 44:40Speaker 4: but I certainly do not respect him in any way,
- 44:43Speaker 4: says a Texture. Unrelated to that, Texas, we need to
- 44:46Speaker 4: support our veterans, to get behind them on the fight
- 44:48Speaker 4: with Elon and Trump cutting jobs and their benefits. We
- 44:51Speaker 4: need to stand with veterans, says a Texture. Tex says,
- 44:57Speaker 4: you think the EXWVU coach didn't want to go to
- 44:59Speaker 4: the and it because he was leaving. Possibly, I mean
- 45:03Speaker 4: they had they turned on. They not only turned down
- 45:05Speaker 4: that tournament, but they also turned down that tournament. The
- 45:07Speaker 4: big twelve deal that they do in Vegas, they turned
- 45:10Speaker 4: that down as well. Tex says, wouldn't it be interesting
- 45:13Speaker 4: if we would start winning again with two OD coaches
- 45:15Speaker 4: rich Rod and Hugs Interesting? Indeed, older adults to protect
