- 0:04Welcome to the For Freedom podcast.
- 0:10I found my freedom. You.
- 0:14I found a joy I can't lose. And thank God it's true.
- 0:21You wrapped your arms around me and heaven broke through.
- 0:25From the moment she found me, I found my freedom in you.
- 0:32This podcast exists to bring the freedom of the gospel for
- 0:36everyday Christians with everyday issues.
- 0:40Now here are your hosts, John Hollyfield and James Seifert.
- 0:48Thank you, Lucas. Thank you Church, for allowing
- 0:50me to be here this morning to have your Bibles are going to be
- 0:53in First Samuel Chapter 2, and I've got your notes provided for
- 0:58you in the bulletin this morning.
- 1:00As you're turning that, I'll give you just a sort of a
- 1:01background of who I am. I am James Safert.
- 1:04I've been at Sulphur Springs little over five years and I've
- 1:07got a wife and three kids. I've got a 10 year old, almost
- 1:1110 year old, almost 8 year old and a little 2 year old.
- 1:14That keeps me young. And so it is a blessing to be a
- 1:18parent and is a blessing to be here this morning and to be able
- 1:21to open God's word to you. Church, I know where you're at.
- 1:25I know the the pain that you're in and our church and it was in
- 1:28a similar situation. And through all that, we know
- 1:30that God's been good and that we're able to trust in His word.
- 1:34We were trust in who he is and what He is.
- 1:36And this morning I'm going to title the message, I will honor
- 1:41God. And the question we're looking
- 1:42at this morning is, who are you honoring?
- 1:45Are you honoring God or your honoring self?
- 1:48And so we're going to look at one verse, but we're going to
- 1:50look at the 1st 3 chapters of Samuel, First Samuel.
- 1:53And we're going to do a sort of a case study this morning,
- 1:56hopefully to help you out in your walk and your journey with
- 1:59Jesus. And so if you have your Bibles,
- 2:01you're willing and able to stand with me if you're able.
- 2:03We're going to read this one verse out of honor and reverence
- 2:05of God's word. And then we'll jump around a
- 2:08little bit this morning and hope to be a blessing.
- 2:11The Bible says, Wherefore the Lord God of Israel said, I said
- 2:16indeed, that thy house and the House of thy fathers should walk
- 2:20before me forever. But now the Lord sayeth be it
- 2:24far from me. They had strained from what they
- 2:27had said. For them that honor me I will
- 2:30honor, And they that despise me shall be lightly.
- 2:34Esteemed Father, we thank you for this day.
- 2:36We thank you for your blessings. Forgot your blessings upon this
- 2:39word or your blessings upon me as I preach this morning, your
- 2:43words and your scripture as I be a blessing to Rocky Hill this
- 2:46morning. We love you and your name.
- 2:48We pray. Amen.
- 2:49You may be seated to help us gain a a deeper understand.
- 2:53This morning we're going to take a look at some real life events,
- 2:56some real life people that lived and breathed on this world.
- 3:01And we're going to look at one family who honored God and one
- 3:05family who dishonored God and the results of that and sort of
- 3:09examine our life as we go through this.
- 3:11I have a biblical counselor and I'm getting my degree in
- 3:14biblical counseling right now. And I look at the I try to look
- 3:18at Scripture in a way to be practically applying to our
- 3:22life. I want to bring whatever
- 3:23scripture I'm looking at on the bottom shelf for everyone to
- 3:27understand of how you can walk away and practically take the
- 3:31word of God and apply it to your life.
- 3:34And so today we're going to look at this story, this real event
- 3:38that happened in history and we're going to look at sort of
- 3:42the background. And if, if you have, if you're
- 3:44able to and you you're willing, you want to turn back just a
- 3:46couple of pages to the very last verse in Judges, you don't have
- 3:49to turn down. I'm going to read it anyways.
- 3:51But but it tells us the state of where Samuel was at when this
- 3:56was written. And so we're going to look at
- 3:58this and and this specific time in history was an extremely dark
- 4:03time in Israel's history. And we know this because the
- 4:07very last verse of judges says this.
- 4:10In those days, there was no king in Israel.
- 4:14There's no one there. And every man did that which was
- 4:18right in his own eyes. There was no governing
- 4:24scripture. There was no governing person
- 4:26that was no one there to help them, even though God was there.
- 4:31They chose to trust in themselves.
- 4:34This period was a time where, as a woman, the only way you would
- 4:39have honor is if you had children.
- 4:41And we come to the first part of Samuel, where we are introduced
- 4:44to this young lady named Hannah who was childless.
- 4:48Someone who was childless in this day and age would have been
- 4:51considered someone who had zero honor from God.
- 4:56Someone who was despised among their people.
- 4:59Someone who no one wanted to do business with wanted to talk to
- 5:02them with. If they were to go get water
- 5:04from the well, they wouldn't want to go with them because
- 5:06they wouldn't want their cursing of God on their life.
- 5:11This is Hannah's life and we get this awesome picture of Hannah
- 5:16coming before God and pouring out her life to God and saying
- 5:20God, I am earnestly praying in the Tabernacle in Shiloh.
- 5:24She made a special visit here to pray that God would honor her
- 5:29and grant her a son, and if she did, she will return that child
- 5:34back to God for his service. This week I was listening on a
- 5:39podcast listener. How many of you listen to
- 5:41podcast in here? Couple people.
- 5:43How many of you have ever heard of a podcast?
- 5:45OK. I've learned that in my, in my
- 5:48days and age of preaching, the more you ask questions, the more
- 5:51awake you become. OK.
- 5:53And so when I ask a question, you sort of wake up a little
- 5:55bit. And so that's that's I'm, I'm
- 5:56going to ask you a couple questions, keep you on your toes
- 5:58a little bit. And so how many of you have ever
- 6:00listened to the radio before? OK.
- 6:02The radio is very similar to a podcast.
- 6:04OK, You're listening to people talk to you.
- 6:05That's all it is. It's just in our millennial age,
- 6:08we, we've changed a little bit. And so I was listening to this.
- 6:10I heard about a mom back in 1920 who had gotten pregnant.
- 6:16And she every day, every day of that pregnancy for nine months,
- 6:20she walked on their property. And there was a tree that was
- 6:23about a half a mile away from her house.
- 6:25And she walked to that tree every day, three times a day.
- 6:28And she prayed at that tree. And she said, God, I'm pregnant.
- 6:32You know that. God, I hope it's a son.
- 6:37And she said, if it's a son, I pray that he uses his life to
- 6:42honor you with every moment of his being.
- 6:47That son was Charles Stanley. Charles Stanley just passed
- 6:52away. And when I say Charles Stanley,
- 6:55that was a mile or a one hour and a half away from this church
- 6:58in Danville, VA, is where that was at.
- 7:01You can go to that tree today, OK?
- 7:04This mom had a desire to see God work in her child's life.
- 7:10And I'm a firm believer that God answers prayers.
- 7:13And this morning, as we look at this mom, as she prayed
- 7:17earnestly for her child to be used of God, we see that God
- 7:21answers prayers this morning. So there's some differences here
- 7:26as we're going to look between two different stories, the story
- 7:28of Elia, I'm sorry, Samuel, and the story of Eli and his two
- 7:33sons, Hoffna and Phineas. And we're going to look at their
- 7:36lives and the contrast between these two.
- 7:39So the first point as you follow along in your notes and they'll
- 7:41be on the screen for you. Honoring God involves presenting
- 7:44our best to the Lord. Honoring God involves presenting
- 7:48our best to the Lord. First Samuel chapter one, verse
- 7:5024 and 28 it says. And when she had weaned him
- 7:53talking about Samuel she took him up with her with three
- 7:57bullocks and an E fight of flower and a bottle of wine and
- 7:59brought him to the House of the Lord.
- 8:02In Shiloh the child was young, and she slew the Bullock, and
- 8:08brought the child to Eli the priest, and and said, Oh Lord,
- 8:12as my soul liveth, my Lord, I am a woman that stood thee here,
- 8:16praying unto you unto the Lord. For this child I prayed, and the
- 8:22Lord giveth me the petition which I asked of him.
- 8:26Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord.
- 8:30As long as he liveth, he shall be lent to the Lord.
- 8:36And and this this is an awesome part.
- 8:37And he talking about the child worshipped the Lord there.
- 8:43Hannah knew that God gave her this child, and the only thing
- 8:48that she could do was give him back to the Lord.
- 8:51The word here Lent is used. And this is simply to mean to
- 8:54offer. Upon request, she requested
- 8:57something of God and she said, I'm going to offer it back to
- 9:00you, God, it's not mine. It's not mine to hold on to.
- 9:05And so she said, Remember Me, God.
- 9:06Remember when I prayed? I'm honoring my request.
- 9:10How many of you have made a promise to God before in a
- 9:12prayer? I have.
- 9:14I've said God, I I want you to do this, God.
- 9:16And if you do this, I'm going to serve.
- 9:19I'm going to do whatever it may be.
- 9:22And how many times have we failed those promises?
- 9:25How many times have we been in our altar and our in our our
- 9:28cause of prayers and saying, God, I need you today, I need
- 9:31you to help me. And God blesses that prayer and
- 9:33he answers, but yet we don't follow through.
- 9:36This is a story here of Hannah who followed through on those
- 9:41promises. I wrote this down.
- 9:43Whatever we have is available to the Lord.
- 9:47Whatever we have. I'm almost.
- 9:48I'm going to say it like this. Whatever we have should be
- 9:51available to the Lord. I define it three ways.
- 9:55We all are given time, we all are given talents, and we all
- 9:59are given treasures. We all have been given these
- 10:04three things times, talents and treasures.
- 10:05We have to ask ourselves, am I willing to give those things to
- 10:08the Lord Jaden camp this morning talked about volunteering for
- 10:12Vacation Bible School? A time where you're going to
- 10:15bless a child that you may not ever see the reward of that
- 10:18child, but by investing that time into that fifth grade
- 10:22little boy or girl, they may come to know Jesus.
- 10:26They may be the next Charles Stanley, but we have to be
- 10:29willing to give him our time in order for that to happen.
- 10:33The Lord may say, I need you to invest in the treasure or your
- 10:36talents and and and offer your voice as a song to the choir or
- 10:40to offer your your service to me and whatever may may be.
- 10:44But are we willing to sacrifice that time or that talent or that
- 10:48treasure to the Lord? I thought think of me for a
- 10:51minute. Imagine for a moment God looking
- 10:55down at heaven and saying, you know, the most valuable thing
- 11:00that I have is my son Jesus. Humanity.
- 11:07You're just not worth it. I'm going to withhold that gift
- 11:11from you. Imagine where we'd be at, we'd
- 11:13be back at this state where we are today, where everyone's
- 11:16doing right in their own eyes. And in this moment, God looked
- 11:21down and said my most valuable gift and you're worth it.
- 11:27You're worth my son, and I'm going to give him up so that he
- 11:31can come and redeem the world. But so often we hold our time
- 11:36and our talents and our treasure.
- 11:37What we hold valuable, we hold on to ourselves and we don't
- 11:41give back to the Lord. If we want to be a people that
- 11:44honor the Lord, we must examine our life and ask him, What am I
- 11:49giving to the Lord? What am I sacrificing in order
- 11:53for the gospel to move forward? What am I giving up in order for
- 11:57the Lord to be lifted high? So that's Honoring God involves
- 12:02presenting our best Lord. Honoring self involves keeping
- 12:04back the best for our pleasures. We begin to see here now as we
- 12:08look at the life of Samuel. Now we look at the sons of Eli
- 12:12and it says here in Second First Samuel, chapter 2.
- 12:14Now the sons of Eli were called the sons of Belial because they
- 12:19knew not the Lord. They were the priest.
- 12:21And the priest customs was that when the people offered a
- 12:25sacrifice, the priest servants came, and while the flesh was
- 12:28seething or cooking, they would take a flesh hook of three teeth
- 12:32in their hand, and they would strike the pan or the kettle or
- 12:35the cod on the pot. And all that brought forth from
- 12:37that flesh that they took for themselves.
- 12:40So they did that in shallow until all these lights that came
- 12:43thither. Also before the burnt fat, the
- 12:46priest servants came and said into the men that were
- 12:48sacrificing give flesh of the roast for the priest, for he
- 12:52will not have sodden flesh or burnt flesh of thee, but he
- 12:56wants the raw flesh. And if any man said to him, let
- 12:59them not fail to burn the fat presently, then take as much as
- 13:03thy soul desired, then they would answer him, Nay, but thou
- 13:06shalt give it to me now, and if not, I will take it by force.
- 13:11Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the
- 13:16Lord, for men abhorred the offering of the Lord.
- 13:19So it's a lot of words there. We're going to break this down a
- 13:22little bit. Basically what it's saying is
- 13:23the priest had to get paid, right?
- 13:26They had to honor the man of God.
- 13:28And so the the payment for the priest was when someone came to
- 13:32offer a sacrifice, The priest as the sacrifice was being
- 13:35completely burned, they would reach in and grab out their well
- 13:38done steak. OK, it was completely burned.
- 13:40There was no fat, there was no juice, there was nothing left.
- 13:43And they would pull this well done steak out, about a pound of
- 13:46meat most likely. And that was the payment for the
- 13:49priests. Well, as the Sons of Belial,
- 13:52which is simply means worthless, began to grow up into their
- 13:56priesthood, they began to say, well, I'm tired of this well
- 13:59done meat. I want to cook the meat myself.
- 14:02I know it's a pound of meat. And so they sent their servants
- 14:06and they went to the house And they said instead of getting the
- 14:09burnt offering, go ahead and cut it off raw.
- 14:13Taint the sacrifice for my pleasure.
- 14:17And they begin to taint these sacrifices and they begin to
- 14:21abhor what was great before the Lord because they were worried
- 14:25about themselves and honoring themselves.
- 14:28Hannah approached the offering to the Lord as I'm going to give
- 14:31you everything. Yet these men somehow believe
- 14:35that God owed them something. And they began to come before
- 14:39the Lord and saying, my service is great, my provisions are
- 14:42great. God had clearly laid out what
- 14:44they were supposed to do. Yet half nine finish decided to
- 14:47say that this is insufficient and I'm going to rob God of what
- 14:52he desires. You know, in our life as we
- 14:55begin to go through this, we all somehow seem to justify what we
- 15:00think is right to soothe our conscience, to soothe our our
- 15:03mind and and we begin this place where we honor self rather than
- 15:09honor God. And so as we continue this
- 15:12thought, the second point is honoring God means that I must
- 15:15keep him as the one I please. Verse 28 Bible says that and he
- 15:21talking about Samuel worshipped the Lord.
- 15:24There honoring godly means I must keep God as Sinner in
- 15:29everything that I do. First Samuel 211 says this.
- 15:33And the child did minister unto the Lord before Eli the priest.
- 15:37As I read that verse, and as I begin studying through this, my
- 15:39mind immediately thought that everything this child Samuel did
- 15:43was consumed with pleasing God, and said as a child, he
- 15:49ministered unto the priest every day he woke up and he said, my
- 15:55duty is to serve God, and whatever I do today, I'm going
- 15:59to do it for the honor and the glory of God, Charles Spurgeon
- 16:04said. Whatever you do, do for the
- 16:06glory of God. Whatever you do, whether it's
- 16:09playing baseball, whether it's going to the golf course,
- 16:12whether it's going to church, whether it's going to the
- 16:14school, whether it's going to college.
- 16:16Everything you do, do to the glory of God.
- 16:21Church, Are we doing that this morning?
- 16:24Are we everything we're doing? Are we completely consumed with
- 16:29pleasing God? Samuel's focus was continually
- 16:33and entirely on God. He woke up in the morning.
- 16:38The first thing he did, I'm sure, was thank God for another
- 16:42day of breath. Thank God for another day to
- 16:46serve him as he went around serving the priest and doing the
- 16:49duties of the priest. This is not a glorious job.
- 16:53This is the job that was involved a lot of going out and
- 16:56getting things and bringing things in.
- 16:57I just came back from Israel. I got to stand in the place in
- 17:00the Tabernacle where this would have been in Shiloh.
- 17:03It's how it's pronounced, how they pronounce it.
- 17:05They the, the archaeologist had recently discovered this place
- 17:08about 40 years ago and they pulled a jar that had been
- 17:13buried and at the bottom of the jars were grapes and the person
- 17:17I got, his name was Amir said. I am very, very certain that
- 17:22Samuel would have been the ones that went out into the vineyard
- 17:26and harvested these grapes for the offering and for the
- 17:28sacrifices in the temple. That was his job.
- 17:33They dated back. You can date back fruit.
- 17:36So we know the dates. And he said it dated back to
- 17:38this time. So everything he was doing is he
- 17:41would go out with that large jar and he went out to the vineyard
- 17:44and begin picking those grapes. Some of us would have been, I'm
- 17:48better than this. I don't deserve to go out and
- 17:51pick these grapes out. I've given my whole life to God.
- 17:56But Samuel said God thank you for allowing me to do this.
- 18:00Thank you for allowing me to pick these grapes and hopefully
- 18:03these grapes will be an honor to you.
- 18:05Hopefully these grapes will turn into a sacrifice where someone's
- 18:08able to worship you. Is that our prayer this morning
- 18:12or is honoring self honoring to keep yourself as the one that
- 18:18I'm going to please? Eli's sons were focused on
- 18:22themselves. Everything they did was about
- 18:24them. As we take a closer look into
- 18:26the reality of Eli and to Eli's sons, we begin to see the Eli's
- 18:31focus was on his children and in essence he was focused on
- 18:35himself. I think one of the saddest
- 18:37scriptures in in all of the Old Testament when it comes to talk
- 18:40about this is this next verse in First Samuel 229, one verse
- 18:45before where we just read about Samuel and it said wherefore
- 18:51kick you at my sacrifice? Eli is talking to his sons at my
- 18:54sacrifice and mine offering which I have commanded in my
- 18:58habitation and honors. This is God talking to Samuel.
- 19:00You've honored your sons above me, and by doing that you have
- 19:04made yourself fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of
- 19:08Israel. My people.
- 19:11You see, Eli was complicit in what they were doing.
- 19:16He was okay with them doing this because it pleased him.
- 19:19Man, I'm not eating well done steaks anymore.
- 19:21I'm getting the best of the best now.
- 19:23And he was okay with robbing God in this situation.
- 19:27We know that Eli was a very large man because at the very
- 19:30end of his life it says that he he was a large man and fell off
- 19:33of the wall when he heard that his sons had died.
- 19:36We understand that this is what belongs to God, is what belongs
- 19:42to God, is honor, dignity and respect.
- 19:44Sometimes we justify our sins by reasoning.
- 19:47I like to do this. Or I really love him.
- 19:50Or this is my favorite show. The devil deceives us by
- 19:53thinking that one little something is okay.
- 19:57It happened to the very first people that lived on this earth.
- 20:01The devil came to him and he deceived them.
- 20:04Do you not want to be as God? Do you not want to be like God?
- 20:09Who wouldn't want that? He's withholding something from
- 20:12you. He twisted scripture.
- 20:15And in this moment, they sinned and they fell.
- 20:18And in the same moment, Eli was justifying what he's doing.
- 20:22Couple years ago, it was before COVID, we had our vacation Bible
- 20:25school. And and I have the honor of
- 20:27teaching and doing a couple of things, but we had a lady and
- 20:30she made some brownies. Lucas may remember this because
- 20:32he would have been a teenager. This time she came in, well, he
- 20:35would have been in high school. So it's been in middle school
- 20:37class. He, she came in and she had made
- 20:39a fresh pan of chocolate brownies.
- 20:43As you can tell, I like to eat. I got excited.
- 20:47I get to eat some special brownies today.
- 20:49She's, she actually made me a a loaf of bread last week, fresh
- 20:53loaf of bread. Oh, it was delicious.
- 20:55I had this week. I'm just getting excited talking
- 20:57about food right now. And so she came in, she had the
- 21:01brownies, she cut all the brownies up and she had them on
- 21:04the plates and she was ready to serve them.
- 21:06And right before she had them out, she said, hey guys, I want
- 21:08to let you know, right before I realized that as I was bringing
- 21:12these brownies today, as I was scooping out the cocoa, my
- 21:16husband had used that same scoop to to scoop up the dog poop.
- 21:20Guys, it's just a little bit of poop.
- 21:24It's not going to be a big deal. Some of you probably aren't
- 21:27going to even get any and you're not going to notice because but
- 21:30just so you know, there's just a little bit of dog poop in it.
- 21:34So of course all the girls like, I don't wanna the guys like give
- 21:38it to me, bring on the bronies. You know, this is, this is their
- 21:40attitude. But but really, when we bring
- 21:43this down, realistically, if you knew that was something bad in
- 21:46those brownies, you wouldn't need it.
- 21:49You would abstain from it. And Eli in this situation, knew
- 21:53that there was something wrong and yet did nothing about it.
- 21:58I read a book years ago. It was.
- 21:59I used it often in my marriage counseling.
- 22:01It's called From This Day Forward by Craig Rochelle.
- 22:04If you're looking to get married, if you're an engaged
- 22:06person here, it's a great book. Fantastic read, easy read.
- 22:10But he gives an illustration at the very beginning of this book
- 22:13that I think it's so fitting because he says that imagine
- 22:16sitting there in the morning and whatever your routine is,
- 22:19coffee, cereal, he said. Imagine you're sitting down and
- 22:23you're eating your favorite cereal, Lucky Charms, Fruit,
- 22:26loose, whatever it may be. And he said imagine scrolling
- 22:29through Facebook because a lot of us catch up our news in the
- 22:31morning and we're scrolling through things.
- 22:33And he said imagine sitting there and eating Lucky Charms.
- 22:36And as you're looking through Facebook, an ad pops up and it
- 22:38says 50% of all people that eat Lucky Charms die of cancer.
- 22:47Whoa, like, that's that's shocking.
- 22:49And you know, as me, I'm an analytical guy.
- 22:51I'm not going to just take that at face value.
- 22:53I'm going to begin researching it.
- 22:55And so I begin researching and I begin seeing article after
- 22:58article by the New York Times and the Huffington Post and all
- 23:00these other places that say 50% of all people that eat Lucky
- 23:04Charms get cancer and they die from from eating Lucky Charms,
- 23:08he said. No one in their right mind would
- 23:10continue to eat Lucky Charms. Knowing that, he said.
- 23:14But often times in our marriage, and it was specific about our
- 23:16marriage, we continue the patterns that the devil tells us
- 23:20to do and we know the consequences.
- 23:24Samuel here honored himself. Eli saw the patterns of his son
- 23:28and continued to endorse it. And yet it was honoring himself.
- 23:34The Third Point is honoring God involves an acceptance of life's
- 23:38problems. Honoring God involves an
- 23:41acceptance of life's problems. This is a very hard part of the
- 23:44scripture in chapter 3 as we continue to Fast forward a
- 23:47little bit through Samuel's life because God came to Samuel in a
- 23:51vision. Oh, how I wish that God would
- 23:54still come to us in the vision, right?
- 23:55It would make life a whole lot easier.
- 23:57God, what do you want me to do? I go to bed and in the middle of
- 24:00the night, God comes and says, hey, this is what I want you to
- 24:02do. Pastor James going to lay out
- 24:03XY&Z Oh, this is awesome. Let's go and do it right.
- 24:06And so God comes to Samuel on a vision.
- 24:08And in this vision, in this moment, you know the story.
- 24:13God wakes him up. He thinks it's Eli.
- 24:15He goes to Eli. Eli, you woke me up.
- 24:16What do you need? Wasn't me.
- 24:18This happens the second time. Third time, he says, when God
- 24:21comes to you, ask what would you will God.
- 24:24And so God comes to him and the vision at night, and begins to
- 24:29lay out the death of Eli the high priest and his sons.
- 24:37A hard task for this young child, most likely a teenager at
- 24:40this time, to hear and then verse Samuel, chapter 3, verse
- 24:4418. After this vision happens, Eli
- 24:48the high priest call Samuel to him and says, Samuel tell me
- 24:53what the vision was about. And Samuel said in verse 18.
- 24:57And Samuel told him every wit, and he had nothing from him.
- 25:03This is Eli's response. This is how we know that Eli was
- 25:06so callous to what the God wanted him to do, because this
- 25:09is what he said. And Eli said to him.
- 25:12And he said it is the Lord let him do what he seemeth good, or
- 25:19what seemeth him good. That is the response that Eli
- 25:23has. Eli says problems are going to
- 25:26happen. So be it.
- 25:29But Samuel looks at this and says with a great distress.
- 25:32I've got to honor God, and I've got to accept the problems that
- 25:35are there, and that's what honoring God means.
- 25:38But in Eli's case, honoring self may get Self may give lip
- 25:44service to obeying God, but that is all.
- 25:47Plainly put, Eli gave lip service to God's instruction,
- 25:50but he never gave real service. Now Eli was very old in chapter
- 25:552, verse 22 and 24. Now Eli was very old, and her
- 25:58all that his sons did, and unto all of Israel, and how they had
- 26:01laid with the women at the assembly of the door of the
- 26:03Tabernacle, the congregation. And he said to them, Why do you
- 26:07do these things? For I hear of your evil doings
- 26:10by all the people. Name my sons, for it is no good
- 26:14report that I hear you make the Lord's people to to to
- 26:18transgress or to sin. And verse 13 for chapter 3,
- 26:22verse 13. For I have told them that I will
- 26:24judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knoweth
- 26:27because his sons made themselves vile and he restrained them.
- 26:31Not. Eli spoke to his sons about
- 26:33their sin, but he honored his sons above God.
- 26:38He honored his sons above the work that God was doing.
- 26:42We can see there's a difference in in these two lives.
- 26:46Samuel was completely and utterly sold out to what God
- 26:50wanted him to do. And God blessed him, and God
- 26:53honored him because he decided to honor God with his life.
- 26:57And we see that Eli and his sons decided to honor themselves, and
- 27:01we see the destruction that happened and the harm that was
- 27:04brought to the men and women of God because of their
- 27:08disobedience. As I began looking through, and
- 27:11I'm going to wind up our message here soon before we go into
- 27:13communion, the word honor here is a verb.
- 27:16Wherefore the Lord God of Israel said, I say indeed that thy
- 27:19house and the House of thy father should walk before me,
- 27:21and forever. For now, the Lord said, be it
- 27:23far from me for those that honor me, for those who show honor in
- 27:28their life, I will honor them in return.
- 27:33And he says, but to Eli and his sons and those that are going to
- 27:36act like that, and they that despise me shall be lightly
- 27:40esteemed or shall be cut off. Another version says, What are
- 27:46we doing with today with this word honor?
- 27:50It simply means to be heavy or to give weight to a heavy
- 27:56thought. A weighty word you could say as
- 28:00it begins to say, what am I giving way to what did God say
- 28:05that is important in my life, that I am trying to honor?
- 28:09You know we try to explain our reasoning of why we do things
- 28:12with you know, that's really not important to me.
- 28:16Children's ministry. I'm not good at children so
- 28:18that's not important to me. Doing things in the in the choir
- 28:22or whatever area of service the Lord may be leading you to.
- 28:25You may say, well, I'm not really sure I'm.
- 28:27I'm built for that. Trust me.
- 28:30God gives us grace when we need grace.
- 28:33God gives us mercy when we need mercy.
- 28:35We just had a a man a couple of weeks ago who passed away
- 28:40tragically committed suicide in our church.
- 28:43I'm sure that wife said I'm not built out to be a widow at this
- 28:47age. But God gives mercy and God
- 28:50gives grace. When grace and mercy is needed.
- 28:53We may not think we're built out for it, but God empowers us in
- 28:57those moments. We must believe and we must
- 29:00accept that God is giving us and preparing us for a time.
- 29:04The word honor means to give way to a communicates that whatever
- 29:07God says is waiting. We've got a short 32nd clip as I
- 29:12begin to to close down. But, but I came across this a
- 29:17man by the name of and I'm going to say this name, EF Hutton.
- 29:20How many has anybody in here ever heard of EF Hutton raise
- 29:22your hand. Hey couple people.
- 29:24I'm noticing that none of our young people are raising their
- 29:26hand because this was back in the 70s and the 80s.
- 29:29KEF Hutton was a was a financial advisor and there was a line
- 29:34that is used in his commercials and I'm going to have them show
- 29:36it's a 30 second commercial and then we're going to discuss it a
- 29:39little bit applicationally. We hope it works.
- 29:47My broker says in the long run that kind of investment could be
- 29:50a good idea. What's your broker say?
- 29:54Well, my broker is EF Hutton and EF Hutton says.
- 30:05When EF Hutton talks, people listen.
- 30:10That was EF Hutton's statement. When EF Hutton talks, people
- 30:14listen. I want to take that phrase and I
- 30:17want to turn on its head and think of this.
- 30:20When God speaks, how much do we listen?
- 30:24When God's word says we should do something, do we take it as
- 30:28just a simple advice from a a break, a bank teller or a broker
- 30:32or a secretary? Or do we take it as the living,
- 30:35breathing word of God, instructing our life and how we
- 30:38should live our life? Are we listening to the words of
- 30:42God? Are we giving God's Word weight
- 30:45in our life? When God speaks about my family,
- 30:50am I listening? When God speaks about my mouth
- 30:53and when it pertains to gossip or slander or foolishness or
- 30:56filthiness, Am I listening when God speaks about my family and
- 31:01how I should raise my children? Because God gives instructions
- 31:05in His word? Am I listening?
- 31:07When God speaks about the gathering of the believers in
- 31:10His church, are we listening? When God speaks about my
- 31:14possessions and what I'm to do with them, am I listening?
- 31:19And then this is the biggest part.
- 31:20As I listen, am I responding? It's one thing to listen.
- 31:27It's one thing as I I tell my 10 year old son, hey Brody, we're
- 31:30going to go out because we did this yesterday and we're going
- 31:32to we we just built a a deck on the back of our house and we're
- 31:35going to clean up some of the wood and take it to the burn
- 31:37pile. And I gave him instruction.
- 31:40It would be one thing for him to say.
- 31:41All right, Dad, sounds good. And then we go out there, and he
- 31:44never picked up one piece of wood.
- 31:46He listened. But did he respond?
- 31:49He didn't respond the proper way.
- 31:52So how are we responding when God speaks truth into our life?
- 31:58Samuel valued the wisdom, He valued the ways, and he valued
- 32:04the very word of God. And because he did that, God
- 32:08honored his life. Because this is what we see in
- 32:11first end of chapter 3. Verse 19 says this.
- 32:14And Samuel grew and the Lord was with him.
- 32:19And I think if we could walk out today with any one piece of
- 32:21advice, it would be this advice right here in looking at
- 32:24Samuel's life and looking at how God honored him and God grew
- 32:27with him. He said in this and he did not
- 32:32let none of God's words fall to the ground.
- 32:37He caught God's words. He said, God, when you speak,
- 32:40I'm going to gather him, I'm going to listen to him, and I'm
- 32:44going to heed the advice of the Lord, and I'm going to follow
- 32:46his advice even when I don't know what my next step is going
- 32:49to be. I'm going to follow the very
- 32:51words of God. Is that us this morning?
- 32:56Are we so in tune with God that we're catching his words?
- 32:59You see, we have something that Samuel didn't have.
- 33:01We have a complete, inerrant, perfect word of God that leads
- 33:06and directs and guides our past every single moment of every
- 33:09single day of our life. It would be awesome to have a
- 33:13vision from God, but we have so much more because we have God's
- 33:17word clearly written for us this morning as our musicians come
- 33:23and begin to play, going to give us just some closing response
- 33:26time as we head into communion here in just a minute.
- 33:29We save some time for communion at the very end.
- 33:32My thought is this. Maybe you've haven't listened to
- 33:35the words of the Lord in the moment of salvation.
- 33:39Maybe you're here this morning and you were raised in church,
- 33:41and maybe you were raised in this church this morning.
- 33:45Your family was here and your your grandparents were here.
- 33:47Maybe you were here during the days of Henry Cook, one of my
- 33:51dear friends. Love Henry, and you've heard him
- 33:55preach, and you've heard other men come through here and
- 33:56preach, but you've never responded to the Lord and
- 33:59salvation. There's just that earning inside
- 34:03of your life where you've never responded.
- 34:04Maybe that's you this morning. Maybe you're here and you're
- 34:07honoring self over what God wants you to do.
- 34:10Maybe God's been burdened in your life to to just step out by
- 34:13faith in one small area. Maybe just be an assistant
- 34:17somewhere and help out serving the Lord.
- 34:19Maybe you are here and you need to say God.
- 34:21I just need your wisdom and your direction of my life.
- 34:25Maybe as we go into communion, there's something at fault
- 34:29between you and someone else and you just need to make that
- 34:31right. I don't know the need that you
- 34:33have this morning because each and every person here, the Lord,
- 34:37deals with differently. But what I do know is that God's
- 34:41grace is sufficient in all of our needs, and He will meet us
- 34:44right where we are. We don't have to run a mile to
- 34:47find God. He's right there.
- 34:49We just have to take the first step.
- 34:52Let's pray. Father, we thank you for this
- 34:53day. Lord, we thank you for your
- 34:54blessings. God, you're so good to us.
- 34:57We're so unworthy of your faithfulness.
- 35:00We fail you day after day, minute by minute.
- 35:05But God, I'm so thankful for your blessings.
- 35:07I'm so thankful for your grace. I pray this morning, as you gave
- 35:12us an illustration here of Samuel and Eli and his sons,
- 35:15that we would take this and we would apply it to our lives in a
- 35:18way that would transform our lives for the better.
- 35:22Maybe it's trusting in you as your savior.
- 35:25Maybe it's some other area. Or do you know the need?
- 35:27I pray that you work today, and in your name we pray.
- 35:30Amen. Let's all stand as our musicians
- 35:32play in our song. Winner sings.
- 35:34If you want to respond to the Lord, I'll be down front.
- 35:36Found my new name. Found that good grace.
- 35:41Found that healing. And the tears fell down my face.
- 35:45When I found my beginning. That has no ending.
- 35:48Found that second chance. Found my best friend.
- 35:50Found my forgiveness. Found my happiness.
- 35:52I've been singing ever since I've been.
