- 3:07news, there are new calls for Boston City Hall
- 3:11to closely examine its hiring policies regarding
- 3:14background checks, following issues with two
- 3:17city workers and their criminal records. The
- 3:20Labor Workforce and Economic Development Committee
- 3:23held a hearing where the city's chief of people
- 3:26officer, Alex Lawrence, addressed the matter.
- 3:30Lawrence noted that some positions require interacting
- 3:33with vulnerable populations and the public in
- 3:36unsupervised settings, which could determine
- 3:39the need for criminal background checks. He emphasized
- 3:43that a blanket policy for all hires is not feasible
- 3:46due to due process rights and potential litigation.
- 3:50This discussion arose after the city fired two
- 3:53employees over serious criminal record issues.
- 4:01Now on to sports. The robot umpires are here.
- 4:07Major League Baseball's competition committee
- 4:09has approved the introduction of the automated
- 4:11ball strike system for the 2026 regular season.
- 4:16Each team will begin with two challenges of the
- 4:19home plate umpire strike zone. The umpire will
- 4:22review the call using a high -tech camera system,
- 4:25and that determination will be final. The system
- 4:29has been tested in AAA since 2022. The Players
- 4:33Association noted that the vote was not unanimous,
- 4:37reflecting broad player sentiment. The challenge
- 4:41format was preferred over calling every pitch
- 4:43using technology. Commissioner Rob Manfred emphasized
- 4:47the balance between umpire integrity and correcting
- 4:51missed calls in local sports. Last night at Rogers
- 4:57Center in Toronto, the Red Sox won over the Blue
- 5:00Jays 4 -1. Wilson earned the win, pitching 1
- 5:04.1 innings with no runs allowed, while Chapman
- 5:07saved the game with a scoreless inning. Carlos
- 5:11Narvaez had a two -run double and Nathaniel Lowe
- 5:14drove in two runs. The Sox finished with nine
- 5:18hits and two errors. The Red Sox record is now
- 5:2286 -71. Tonight, the Red Sox face the Blue Jays
- 5:27again at Roger Center for game two of this three
- 5:31-game series. Garrett Crochet, who is 17 -5 with
- 5:35a 2 .69 earned run average, takes the mound for
- 5:39the Sox. Mack Scherzer starts for Toronto with
- 5:43a record of 5 -4 and a 5 .06 earned run average.
- 5:49First pitch is scheduled for 7 -07 in the Domed
- 5:52Rogers Center. In top news, American Express

- 8:43back to the show. Let's talk science. Scientists
- 8:48believe they have found a groundbreaking new
- 8:51energy source that is virtually unlimited. Plastic
- 8:55is littering the planet. and scientists are trying
- 8:58to convert it back into usable fuel by heating
- 9:01it to very high temperatures. A new method discovered
- 9:05by researchers at Yale University could boost
- 9:08production of pyrolysis oil without costly catalysts.
- 9:13This innovative technique uses a three -section,
- 9:163D -printed carbon column reactor to enhance
- 9:19the yield. While scaling up poses challenges,
- 9:23scientists hope this can alleviate the plastic
- 9:26crisis and less in reliance on fossil fuels.
- 9:30For now, the best plastic is still one that is
- 9:33never made. And in entertainment news, a preemption
- 9:41means that Jimmy Kimmel Live will remain unavailable
