SPEAKER_03: And we thank you for being with us today.
• 0:06
SPEAKER_03: Time now for Jeff's Car Culture.
• 0:08
  SPEAKER_03: Regenerating tire treads.
• 0:10
  SPEAKER_03: Yep, what what what?
• 0:11
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 0:12
SPEAKER_02: Well, science uh has designed these things to uh regenerate your tire tread.
• 0:18
SPEAKER_02: Regenerative tires signifies a major leap forward in automotive industry.
• 0:22
SPEAKER_02: This groundbreaking technology is underpinned by the concept of self-replenishing tread.
• 0:28
SPEAKER_02: That could only be significant implications for driving safety, cost effectiveness, and the environment.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_02: You say, what's behind the science, Michael?
• 0:35
SPEAKER_02: Well, regenerative tires are essentially self-renewing with the capacity to continually regenerate their tread.
• 0:41
SPEAKER_02: This is made possible by smart materials that have the ability to change their properties in response to external stimuli.
• 0:48
  SPEAKER_02: So, like you, Doug.
• 0:49
  SPEAKER_02: This fascinating field.
• 0:59
SPEAKER_02: Several patents have been granted in relation to the tire generation technologies, reflecting the significant strides being made in this area.
• 1:07
SPEAKER_02: These patents cover a variety of technology and materials.
• 1:10
  SPEAKER_02: Who are the pioneers?
• 1:11
SPEAKER_02: Well, several companies are leading the way developing the regenerative tires.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_02: For instance, Goodyears has a recharge concept.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_02: It represents a bold vision for the future of tire technology.
• 1:22
SPEAKER_02: There's a report out in Popular Mechanics that these tires are designed to replenish their treads using a special compound that is released over time.
• 1:30
SPEAKER_02: So Michelin has been making strides in this field also of regenerative tires.
• 1:35
SPEAKER_02: There's a news article in Rubber News.
• 1:37
SPEAKER_02: Michelin researchers have won a patent.
• 1:39
  SPEAKER_02: Wait a minute.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_02: On Rubber News, yeah, yeah.
• 1:46
SPEAKER_02: Not the synthetic ones, but the ones that you get at the Shamrock station.
• 1:49
  SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
• 1:50
  SPEAKER_02: Those are extra large.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_02: Michelin researchers have won a patent awarded in this innovative technology and uses special tread blocks that expand the tire wear down by the maintaining the optional tread depth.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_02: So that's pretty important because what you're going to do is as it gets lower, it's going to regenerate more.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_02: The potential impact of this is main benefits of regenerating tire potential to enhance road safety by maintaining optional tire tread depth.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_02: These tires could improve grip and performance in a variety of driving conditions.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_02: Environmental applications or implications, I should say.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_02: In addition to their potential benefits, drivers' regenerative tires could also save significant environmental benefits.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_02: Actually had be part of the significant environmental benefits.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_03: So in other in other words, what you're saying is that we could go from a 16-inch tire to a 22.
• 2:40
  SPEAKER_03: No.
• 2:41
  SPEAKER_02: Good thinking, but no.
• 2:43
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 2:44
  SPEAKER_02: There are challenges though.
• 2:45
SPEAKER_02: Well, the concept of regenerative tires is certainly exciting.
• 2:48
SPEAKER_02: There are several technological challenges that need to overcome uh before they can actually become a reality.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_02: So uh they're out there, they're doing all kinds of technology and and engineering and it's all good stuff.
• 3:01
SPEAKER_02: I don't see it in my lifetime, but go for it.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_03: Well, I think that they're trying to do away with wheels as we have known them.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_03: And the wheel is actually the tire.
• 3:10
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you know, if we had flying cars, we wouldn't have tire problems.
• 3:13
  SPEAKER_02: So there you go.
• 3:22
  SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
• 3:23
  SPEAKER_03: That's all right.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_01: Um I thought I was saying because it hit Jeff and I ended up getting behind.
• 3:28
  SPEAKER_01: That's all right.
• 3:29
SPEAKER_03: Well, now's not the time because we want to go to take the Texas Blue Bonnet tour.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_01: You know, you brought that up last week, and and I got to thinking about it, and I got to looking at uh the best time to do that.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_01: And it would be um coming up into March and April typically, but we've had a really warm winter and a lot of moisture up in the hill country.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, but that wasn't enough to really slow things down that much.
• 3:52
  SPEAKER_01: It slowed me down.
• 3:54
SPEAKER_01: It slowed me down a lot.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_01: So, anyway, so I figured out that there were five of the best places that you might go to find some Texas blue bonnets.
• 4:01
SPEAKER_01: And obviously, the uh hill country is gonna be where most of them are gonna be found.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_01: Uh the peak bloom is usually late March to mid-April, but you're gonna have to do a little planning because depending on where you're at and where you're gonna have to go to go see this.
• 4:13
SPEAKER_01: Now, if you are going out there to take pictures, keep in mind a lot of this is private property.
• 4:18
SPEAKER_01: They don't mind you taking pictures of it.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_01: Some of them don't mind you actually having your children or whatever out there in it, but try not to trample it because there's gonna be people coming behind you, and it really works better.
• 4:27
SPEAKER_01: Softer lights, early morning, late afternoon, if you're gonna go do this.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_01: Now, the one that you would also look at is the Willow City Loop.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_01: Now, this is near Fredericksburg, it's 13 mile Syn Eak Road in the Texas Hill Country.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's one of the most famous or the most photographed blue bonnet destinations because of the quantity and the rolling hills, and it mixes really well with the Indian paintbrush, which is going to be the little oranger colors.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_01: Now, this is usually the peak blue in this area, is usually late March through early April.
• 4:58
SPEAKER_01: Um, and again, stay on the public roadways and respect the private property in this area because a lot of it is where you can go and they know you're going to come there to look.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_01: So then moving on down to Mule Shoe Benz.
• 5:12
  SPEAKER_01: Mule Shoe, Texas.
• 5:14
SPEAKER_01: So this is the Colorado River's near Spicewood.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_01: Now, this is up around the Austin area.
• 5:18
SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's famous for its dense blue bonnet fields that overlook Lake Travis.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_01: Now, the park's open meadows, they actually create this really nice backdrop.
• 5:26
SPEAKER_01: You know, they've got the water in the background, the wildflowers together, so it's great for families.
• 5:30
SPEAKER_01: Got some easy walking trails.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_01: And again, be careful with the um private property.
• 5:36
SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of parking along the roads, and it really fills up on the weekends, so the weekdays are a lot better if you're going to that area because of its proximity to Austin.
• 5:44
SPEAKER_01: Now, you can also go down to Ennis, the Blue Bonnet Trails there.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_01: This is known as the official Blue Bonnet City of Texas.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_01: Now they got more than 40 miles of mapped.
• 5:55
SPEAKER_03: That sounds like a Chamber of Commerce bunch of BS.
• 5:59
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it could be.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_00: Well, it is a PR.
• 6:01
  SPEAKER_00: They got 40 miles.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_03: First of all, Ennis is up north.
• 6:03
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_00: Well, they got out of side of Dallas, south south of Dallas.
• 6:07
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 6:09
SPEAKER_03: You said going down to Ennis, and I'm thinking, oh, depends on where you're at.
• 6:13
SPEAKER_01: So 40 miles of mapped driving trails through all of these wildflowers, and and that's one because there's so much of it.
• 6:20
SPEAKER_01: Now it's located south of Dallas, and North Dallas is North Texas is a favorite when the blooms start spreading across all the pastures and roadside fields because it is pretty wide open out there versus some of the hill country that's got a lot more trees and stuff in it.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_01: Now, there is actually a Blue Bonnet Trails Festival that takes place in April.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_01: Check the calendar for the exact dates for this year.
• 6:41
SPEAKER_01: Now you can also go to Brynham over in Washington County, midway between Houston and Austin.
• 6:47
SPEAKER_01: Now, this is uh got a surrounding countryside, creates a lot of really nice picturesque scenes that you can use with some barns and some fences and a lot of sweeping blue bonnet pastures, literally.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_01: Now, this has got a close proximity to Houston, it's not far from Austin, so you get a lot of traffic out there on the weekend.
• 7:07
SPEAKER_01: So be sure and plan your trip to visit some of these.
• 7:10
SPEAKER_01: The last one I'd like to show, because there's a lot more of them, is the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center.
• 7:17
SPEAKER_01: Now, this is a place that you can actually go in Austin that showcases the blue bonnet displays.
• 7:22
SPEAKER_01: Now, they actually set it up with plans for people to come in and look at these instead of just being out in the natural hillsides and around.
• 7:30
SPEAKER_01: So it's very cultivated and it's protected, so but it's great for families and easy access for photography.
• 7:37
SPEAKER_01: So if you're looking for some of this blue bonnet this spring, there's lots of places you can go and see.
• 7:42
SPEAKER_01: This is a few of them that are more well known.
• 7:44
SPEAKER_01: So plan your trip accordingly.
• 7:46
SPEAKER_03: Well, I think that most of us are ready to get out in the yard, but you know, it's just not quite there yet.
• 7:52
  SPEAKER_03: No, it's it's really damp.
• 7:54
SPEAKER_03: Well, it is today, and it's supposed to turn cold tomorrow, and yeah, it's just not just not really good right now.
• 7:59
  SPEAKER_01: No, not yet.
• 8:00
SPEAKER_01: But you since you've got to do a little planning if you're gonna get out on the weekend because of traffic and things.
• 8:04
SPEAKER_02: And that's a good point that you both made.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_02: Yes, you you gotta get out there, you gotta you gotta put your toe in the water of of the yard work and to get all that.
• 8:12
SPEAKER_02: And yes, you've got to put a plan together.
• 8:14
SPEAKER_02: So getting your toe in the water is making the plan.
• 8:16
SPEAKER_02: Your toe in the water.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_02: Put your toe in the water.
• 8:20
  SPEAKER_03: You got shoes on.
• 8:21
  SPEAKER_03: We got shoes on.
• 8:22
  SPEAKER_04: Take them off.
• 8:23
SPEAKER_03: You don't ever take your shoes off.
• 8:25
SPEAKER_03: You live near Beaumont, you can take them off.
• 8:28
  SPEAKER_03: That would be him.
• 8:29
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
• 8:36
  unknown: There you go.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_03: Okay, time now for this hour's car review.
• 8:40
SPEAKER_03: I had a very nice experience with the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_03: Now it comes in several trim levels, including SE, SEL, The Limited, and the Calligraphy.
• 8:58
  SPEAKER_03: Oh.
• 8:59
SPEAKER_03: I reviewed or am reviewing the hybrid calligraphy all-wheel drive.
• 9:04
SPEAKER_03: This is a mid-size SUV, although it looks like it is a full size.
• 9:08
SPEAKER_03: It does seat up to seven, including the driver.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_03: Um, so it does have a third row.
• 9:14
SPEAKER_03: Exterior changes redesigned in 2024.
• 9:19
SPEAKER_03: This is a 26, so not much changes between the years since its introduction as a new vehicle in 2024.
• 9:27
SPEAKER_03: Exterior features, straightforward design with bookend daytime running lights, edgy designed fender extensions, sloping roof line, horizontal body-wide lighting on the lower rear hatch.
• 9:46
SPEAKER_03: It makes it really unique.
• 9:49
SPEAKER_03: What I liked about it, the boxy, edgy design.
• 9:53
  SPEAKER_03: It's just different.
• 9:54
SPEAKER_03: It's not like all the other SUVs you see out there.
• 9:58
  SPEAKER_03: What could use improvement?
• 10:00
SPEAKER_03: Nothing that I can think of, and I just put it down here.
• 10:02
  SPEAKER_03: Keep it coming.
• 10:03
  SPEAKER_03: Bring more of this.
• 10:05
  SPEAKER_03: It's really cool.
• 10:06
SPEAKER_03: Interior highlights, two foot, two feet of screen and a glove box.
• 10:16
SPEAKER_03: Well, look at the size of that screen.
• 10:19
SPEAKER_03: Okay, it's two feet long.
• 10:21
SPEAKER_03: And uh the glove box is there, obviously, on the passenger side.
• 10:24
SPEAKER_03: And yes, it's a separate one at the top of the uh dash.
• 10:29
SPEAKER_03: Um dual pad phone charger.
• 10:32
SPEAKER_03: See it down there at the bottom?
• 10:33
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, dual pad uh phone charger.
• 10:36
  SPEAKER_03: Loved it.
• 10:37
  SPEAKER_03: Uh comfortable seating throughout.
• 10:40
SPEAKER_03: Uh the air conditioning gets a separate panel for its controls.
• 10:44
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 10:45
  SPEAKER_03: Thank goodness.
• 10:46
SPEAKER_03: Uh, all of these manufacturers seem to be doing to this minimalist design.
• 10:50
SPEAKER_03: And if you're driving the vehicle, now you've got to take your eyes off the road and fumble on and try to find whatever it is that you're looking for.
• 10:58
SPEAKER_01: Drill down through the screens.
• 10:59
  SPEAKER_03: It's just it's just not good.
• 11:01
SPEAKER_03: As a matter of fact, I've got a story on that a little bit later on.
• 11:04
SPEAKER_03: Um, cargo trunk room, good with the third row down.
• 11:09
SPEAKER_03: With you got the third row up, well, it's uh tight back there, but that's what it's designed for.
• 11:14
SPEAKER_03: What I liked, the design and comfort gets high marks on this vehicle.
• 11:19
  SPEAKER_03: What could use improvement?
• 11:20
SPEAKER_03: Give me a volume knob for the radio.
• 11:23
  SPEAKER_03: Oh.
• 11:23
SPEAKER_03: That there's there's one thing that it didn't have.
• 11:26
  SPEAKER_03: Engine.
• 11:27
  SPEAKER_03: Ready?
• 11:28
SPEAKER_03: 1.6 liter what turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid engine that turns out 231 horsepower and 271 pound feet of torque, which was plenty for the six-speed automatic transmission, and it will tow up to one ton mileage.
• 11:46
  SPEAKER_03: Uh city 35, highway 34 for a combined to 34.
• 11:51
SPEAKER_03: I got 32.6 miles per gallon over 394.8 miles.
• 11:56
  SPEAKER_03: Very good.
• 11:56
SPEAKER_03: What I liked about it, the mileage.
• 11:59
SPEAKER_03: Ride and handling, very nice, comfortable and compliant.
• 12:04
SPEAKER_03: Nice highway attitude, I wrote.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_03: Uh, what could use improvement?
• 12:08
  SPEAKER_03: Nothing.
• 12:08
  SPEAKER_03: It's all good.
• 12:10
SPEAKER_03: Okay, so here are the prices for you.
• 12:11
  SPEAKER_03: You ready?
• 12:12
  SPEAKER_03: Yep.
• 12:13
SPEAKER_03: The base trim price is$52,500.
• 12:19
SPEAKER_03: That's the base trim price.
• 12:21
  SPEAKER_03: As tested,$52,985.
• 12:26
  SPEAKER_03: Base model price,$36.4 competitors.
• 12:30
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 12:31
  SPEAKER_03: Kia Sorrento, its cousin,$38,690.
• 12:35
  SPEAKER_03: Toyota Highlander,$48,964.
• 12:40
SPEAKER_03: Mitsubishi Outlander, which I never would compare this to, but it's close competitor,$29,995.
• 12:47
SPEAKER_03: So there's a widespread uh figures here for these different vehicles.
• 12:52
SPEAKER_03: And my recommendation to anybody that's out there looking for a car do your homework and shop, shop, shop.
• 12:59
  SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
• 13:00
SPEAKER_03: One may be everything that you wanted, but you can't find the volume, uh the radio volume control knob because it doesn't have one.
• 13:07
SPEAKER_03: If that's an issue for you, then go to something else because there's too much competition happening.
• 13:12
  SPEAKER_03: Right.
• 13:12
SPEAKER_03: Especially in this size SUV.
• 13:15
SPEAKER_03: Next week I'm going to review the Toyota Corolla Cross.
• 13:20
  SPEAKER_03: Oh.
• 13:20
SPEAKER_03: Which is kind of a itty-bitty, teeny weeny.
• 13:24
SPEAKER_03: Too itty-bitty, not too teeny-weeny crossover, but it's called a Toyota Corolla Cross.
• 13:31
  SPEAKER_03: Give us an insight.
• 13:31
  SPEAKER_03: Was it sporty?
• 13:32
  SPEAKER_03: Did it drive well?
• 13:33
  SPEAKER_03: Give us a hint.
• 13:34
  SPEAKER_03: It drove well.
• 13:36
SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm not going to tell you any more than that, but you'll have to stay tuned for the review.
• 13:39
  SPEAKER_02: Call you Bobby Sparkman.
• 13:42
SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, I can tell you that uh we're gonna go to Lukenbach.
• 13:46
SPEAKER_03: You drove it all the way to Lukenbach.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_03: I did not drive it to Lukenbach.
• 13:50
SPEAKER_03: I can only imagine what they would say.
• 13:52
SPEAKER_02: To the point of that review in uh what sold for car review, sold for cars, Hemings?
• 13:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the last vehicle that you said was George's, sort of similar to that one you just reviewed.
• 14:02
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the uh$150,000 one.
• 14:05
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 14:06
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah,$150,000.
• 14:07
SPEAKER_01: That was a lot of people were shocked.
• 14:08
SPEAKER_01: 86 years old or something.
• 14:11
SPEAKER_03: I will tell you that that this vehicle, you know, I drive a different vehicle every week.
• 14:16
SPEAKER_03: And um it it it's impressive to see how far the automotive industry has come in a general.
• 14:24
SPEAKER_03: But Hyundai, they have come a long way, baby, in a short period of time.
• 14:29
SPEAKER_03: They are a serious contender and they sell a lot of cars and for a reason.
• 14:34
  SPEAKER_03: Yes.
• 14:34
SPEAKER_03: Because they hold up and they're priced right.
• 14:37
SPEAKER_03: Are they building a factory here, a stateside?
• 14:39
  SPEAKER_03: Probably.
• 14:40
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 14:40
  SPEAKER_03: They all are.
• 14:42
SPEAKER_01: All right, because of the tariffs.
• 14:44
  SPEAKER_01: Well, there's that.
• 14:45
SPEAKER_01: Not only that, just shipping.
• 14:47
  unknown: Yeah.
• 14:48
  SPEAKER_03: Um
