- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:15you by the Great News Podcast. Why?
- 0:19Because good news should be heard and the link is right here
- 0:22in the show notes. Today's quote has no confirmed
- 0:26original author, but it may be one of the most timely and
- 0:30necessary pieces of modern wisdom that you'll hear this
- 0:33year. And as you'll discover, 2
- 0:36brilliant minds from very different centuries saw exactly
- 0:41the same truth long before anyone put it into a false
- 0:44sentence. The quote is this Remember the
- 0:49life you're comparing yours to might be built on borrowed
- 0:54money. Let's start way back in 1899,
- 0:59Thorstein Beblin, Norwegian American economist, sociologist,
- 1:03and one of the sharpest social critics in American history.
- 1:08He published a book called The Theory of the Leisure Class.
- 1:12It carved out a reputation for him as the first academic to
- 1:15ever sit down and think seriously about wealth and
- 1:18consumerism and how they interrelate in American Society.
- 1:23In it, he coined the term conspicuous consumption to
- 1:28describe how people use wasteful expenditures to signal status to
- 1:33others. In other words, over 125 years
- 1:37ago, before credit cards, before Instagram, before social media
- 1:43existed in any form, Veblen had already identified the pattern.
- 1:49You know, keeping up with the Joneses.
- 1:53People spend money not primarily for their own enjoyment, but to
- 1:57be seen spending it. The purchase isn't really the
- 2:01point. The audience is.
- 2:04Now jump forward to 2020 Morgan Husel, financial writer and
- 2:10author of The Psychology of Money, one of the best selling
- 2:13personal finance books ever written.
- 2:16He makes the same observation with devastating precision.
- 2:21He wrote. We tend to judge wealth by what
- 2:24we see because that's the information we have in front of
- 2:28us. We can't see people's bank
- 2:31accounts or brokerage statements, so we rely on
- 2:35outward appearances to gauge financial success.
- 2:39Cars, homes, Instagram photos. Modern capitalism makes helping
- 2:44people make it until they make it a cherished industry.
- 2:49And then he delivers the line that connects directly to
- 2:51today's quote. Someone driving $100,000 car
- 2:55might be wealthy, but the only data point you have about their
- 3:00wealth is that they have $100,000 less than they did
- 3:05before they bought the car or $100,000 more debt.
- 3:11That's all you know. The house, the car, the holiday,
- 3:15the wardrobe, the curated life on social media.
- 3:19None of it tells you whether the person behind it is building
- 3:22wealth or building debt. And yet we compare ourselves to
- 3:26those images as if they represent the full financial
- 3:30truth. We feel inadequate against
- 3:32nothing more than a performance. We measure our real life against
- 3:37someone else's highlight reel, one that may be financed
- 3:41entirely on borrowed money, manufactured for an audience and
- 3:46quietly unraveling behind the scenes.
- 3:49Who Saw Puts it simply, spending money to show people how much
- 3:54money you have is the fastest way to have less money.
- 3:58Beblin said the same thing in 1899 with more academic
- 4:02language. The pattern is not new.
- 4:05What's new is how visible it's become and how much damage the
- 4:10comparison is quietly doing. I've caught myself in the
- 4:15comparison trap more times than I'd like to admit.
- 4:19One example is that I'm using a HILE PR40 microphone.
- 4:23Back in the day when I first started podcasting back in 2008,
- 4:27this was the vanity microphone of choice.
- 4:30It was a more expensive microphone than you need, but if
- 4:34you had it, wow, you're like Leo LaPorte or Cliff Ravenscraft or
- 4:39all the other big podcasters that use this mic nowadays.
- 4:44It's the sure SM 7B mic, you know, the one Rogan uses and
- 4:48everybody else. They've all got them, all the
- 4:52big podcasters. Now, should I go out and buy
- 4:56that mic? I'd be lying if it didn't cross
- 4:58my mind. I don't need a new mic.
- 5:01It would kind of be a waste of money, but then I would have the
- 5:05cool mic that everybody else has.
- 5:08Well, I'm not buying the mic. I'm happy with my Aisle PR 40
- 5:11and I'm going to listen to this quote and reaffirm that I'm
- 5:17doing just fine with the Heil PR 40.
- 5:20So here's the question, who are you currently comparing yourself
- 5:24to? Who's life, who's success?
- 5:26Who's apparent? Well, without any real knowledge
- 5:30of what's underneath it. Because Veblen saw it in 1899,
- 5:35Household documented it in 2020, and whoever put today's quote in
- 5:41a single sentence understood it too.
- 5:43That the life you're measuring yourself against may be entirely
- 5:47built on borrowed money. It may just be an image,
- 5:52something that isn't even true, carefully constructed and
- 5:55financially fragile, and completely irrelevant to your
- 6:00own path. Stop comparing your reality to
- 6:03someone else's performance. Build something real, even if
- 6:08nobody can see it yet. That's it for today.
- 6:13I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 6:18tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 6:24with another daily quote.
