- 0:03There's so many things that can be said about this particular
- 0:06celebration. There's so many testimonies
- 0:10leading up to how this church began, the beginnings of this
- 0:15church, the things that took place in the past two years.
- 0:19It would take us more than one service to just touch on, even
- 0:22briefly, the variety and the colourful manifestations and
- 0:27interventions of God. But if there is one way of
- 0:32summarizing what NBC has become, or how NBC became NBC prayfully,
- 0:42this is what came to mind. Maranatha Bible Church is the
- 0:46product of God's Providence. Maranatha Bible Church is the
- 0:51result of God's Providence. And perhaps you've heard that
- 0:55word before, Providence, and maybe not.
- 0:57But Simply put, when you hear the word Providence, what we're
- 1:00trying to say is that God sovereignly works in and through
- 1:06the daily non miraculous events in our lives to affect His will.
- 1:13In other words, the belief of God's providential work teaches
- 1:20that the Lord uses natural means and works through natural
- 1:24orders, often times behind the scenes, to bring about His will.
- 1:31It's not immediately obvious. You can't say oftentimes in the
- 1:35moment. Here are the clear fingerprints
- 1:39that we can believe in our hearts that God is always at
- 1:40work. The thing with Providence is
- 1:43that it is often God's hidden work that is in function and
- 1:47operation. And we might think that this
- 1:49idea of God's Providence is true for the world of creation and
- 1:55the different systems of our universe, or the grander stages
- 1:58of life like the rise and fall of nations.
- 2:01But the truth of Providence applies to the good that God
- 2:07desires to bring about in each of our lives on an individual
- 2:10basis. Providence is at work in each of
- 2:14our lives, not just in the overarching story of human
- 2:18history, but in your own story, in your own journey, in your own
- 2:24unique circumstances and giftings and family background
- 2:27and context. Providence is at work.
- 2:30The pen of God's authorship is continually writing, though you
- 2:34may perceive it right away or not.
- 2:37And one of the things about Providence that is so
- 2:39encouraging to me is that the Lord often connects and attaches
- 2:45seemingly unrelated events, insignificant moments, even
- 2:52sometimes circumstances that seem to contradict or even
- 2:56challenge the will of God to actually accomplish as well.
- 3:01In essence, when we're talking about Providence, we're talking
- 3:04about the indirect leadership of God on all levels, on every
- 3:10level, from governments to your living room, from politics to
- 3:16the classroom. Every sphere is under the
- 3:19influence of God's providential mercies.
- 3:23And why I love to meditate and preach about Providence is
- 3:26because this truth promises the children of God one main thing.
- 3:31That there is nothing that happens in your life that is
- 3:33void of purpose. No matter what the episode is,
- 3:39no matter what the experience is, is, whatever it may be
- 3:42concerning your comfort or your discomfort, whether it is
- 3:46monumental or it is minor, whether it is clear or unclear.
- 3:51One thing is for certain, When you and I understand God's
- 3:53Providence, there is nothing left up to random chance and
- 3:57there is nothing left up to aimless coincidence.
- 4:03Providence promises purpose in everything.
- 4:09And George Mueller said a very powerful quote concerning
- 4:12Providence. He said, God does not only
- 4:15ordain our steps, He ordains our stops.
- 4:18And what I take that to mean is the Lord doesn't only work in
- 4:22direct deliverances. He also works in delays.
- 4:27He's also at work in your detours.
- 4:31God is always at work, and God is always at work for the aim of
- 4:35His glory and for the good of those who belong to Him.
- 4:39And if it is true that Providence promises purpose in
- 4:43every single thing that you and I engage and encounter, then it
- 4:48also must mean that Providence is the grounds for your peace
- 4:55and for your gratitude in all things.
- 4:57Can I say that one more time? If Providence promises purpose
- 5:01and absolutely everything, then it is also the grounds for you
- 5:06to know gratitude and peace in everything.
- 5:11This is the fruit of believing this truth, that even though you
- 5:14can't understand how this plays out or how this segment of your
- 5:19life this season fits into the grand scheme of things and God's
- 5:23purpose for your existence, you can still worship in the unknown
- 5:29because the unknown is not empty of meaning.
- 5:33The difficulty for you to reconcile how God is using this
- 5:36or how this can be allowed by God?
- 5:38How does this make sense? Providence calms your soul and
- 5:44teaches you and whispers to you that this has a purpose, that
- 5:50there is something behind this. This is an ordained piece.
- 5:54This is a sanctified segment waiting to be linked to a bigger
- 5:59picture that you will one day perceive and praise the Lord
- 6:03for. That's Providence and what I
- 6:07want to do in this in this time together as we reflect on how
- 6:10God brought about Maranatha Bible Church and how God will
- 6:13continue to lead by His grace. Maranatha Bible Church is
- 6:17evidences and examples of Providence so that you would
- 6:20leave this place more confirmed and confident that the Lord is
- 6:26surely leading me. Whether I can perceive it or
- 6:30not, the Lord is leading my life.
- 6:34And so let's do this, shall we? Let's look at how God, in the
- 6:38word of God is providentially working, how he has worked, and
- 6:42how they are principles for us to say.
- 6:44Then he must surely be at work in me.
- 6:45Turn with me. What do you think we're going to
- 6:49go? Oh, Genesis, right.
- 6:50Because of who? Joseph Shore.
- 6:52Or maybe what? Another woman of God?
- 6:56Esther. Yes, yes.
- 6:57The name of God is not mentioned in all the book of Esther, but
- 6:59his works are all there, right? That's by divine purpose.
- 7:03But we're not going to go to either of those.
- 7:05Turn with me to the book of Philemon.
- 7:08Let's go to Philemon together. Philemon, somebody might be
- 7:14saying, Is that a book in the Bible?
- 7:16It is a book in the Bible. It's in the New Testament,
- 7:21before the book of Hebrews. Philemon is the shortest of
- 7:26Paul's epistles and it is the only epistle that Paul wrote
- 7:30directly to a singular person and all the other epistles he's
- 7:34writing to the church at large or to a group of believers in a
- 7:36region. But Philemon is directly given
- 7:38to one person named Philemon, and this letter is not a a
- 7:43theological treatise. It's very brief.
- 7:45But what it is is Paul applying Christian truths to a real life
- 7:49situation. It's a very personal letter and
- 7:53it's a letter that we can relate to greatly because the whole
- 7:56background behind Philemon is this.
- 7:59Philemon was a Christian that Paul knew personally, and
- 8:03Philemon had a servant named Onisimus.
- 8:06Onisimus at a certain point fled from his master Philemon, and
- 8:11with that stole much from him. He betrayed his master.
- 8:15He created problems for his master and he was on the run and
- 8:20through a series of steps that are not made known to us.
- 8:23Apparently Onisimus met Paul while he was in Rome and in
- 8:28prison. We're not told how that
- 8:30encounter happened, but what we are told is that they did in
- 8:33fact meet and when they met something miraculous happened.
- 8:38Paul the Apostle, though bound in chains, you could not bind
- 8:42the word of God with that man. He proclaimed the gospel.
- 8:45He proclaimed the gospel to this runaway criminal, to Anissimus.
- 8:49And guess what happened to Anissimus?
- 8:50He believed. He repented.
- 8:53He became a born again Christian and they became great friends.
- 8:58In fact Paul really wanted on this miss to be by his side
- 9:01because he was of great use to Paul.
- 9:03But Paul learned of the circumstances with on Isthmus
- 9:07concerning his master back here with Philemon, and Paul
- 9:14encourages this born again Christian on Isthmus to be
- 9:17reconciled to Philemon to make things right.
- 9:19That's the Christian thing to do, to live a repentant life.
- 9:22And if there is something that you did wrong on this, Ms. make
- 9:25it right. And so he encourages on this Ms.
- 9:28to go back to Philemon, to not only ask for forgiveness, but to
- 9:32tell him, hey, I'm a different person, I'm saved, and I want to
- 9:37come back and make things right again.
- 9:40At the same time, Paul writes to Philemon a very heartfelt,
- 9:46humble letter of instruction, knowing that Philemon would have
- 9:51been naturally frustrated and angry with the circumstances
- 9:54that took place at the hands of Onissimus and the actions and
- 9:58the disregard for authority. And so he tenderly calls for
- 10:03Philemon to forgive Onissimus and to receive Onissimus and to
- 10:08be reconciled back to Onissimus. And this is what this letter is
- 10:13about. You and I are getting a window
- 10:15into the life of a man who was struggling to deal with the
- 10:20disappointment of another person that he was greatly invested in,
- 10:24that he trusted in, that he took care of in many ways.
- 10:29And we are invited to look at this short letter to discover
- 10:33the heart stirring insights and the admonition for us.
- 10:37Also, please pay attention to forgive, to forgive people who
- 10:45have hurt us. You're saying, OK, that's a
- 10:50wonderful, you know, overview of Philemon.
- 10:54What does that have to do with Providence?
- 10:56Providence is in this book. Paul highlights Providence in
- 11:00this book. Who would have thought that?
- 11:01You can learn about Providence in the book of Philemon.
- 11:04Where is it? We'll come here in verse 15.
- 11:06There's no chapter. So verse 15, look up Paul saying
- 11:10to Philemon, and he's making this persuasive point in order
- 11:15to win Philemon's willingness to do his part to mend the
- 11:18splintered relationship. Philemon 15.
- 11:21For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while,
- 11:27that you might have him back forever, no longer as a
- 11:31bondservant but more than a bondservant as a beloved
- 11:34brother, especially to me. But how much more to you, both
- 11:38in the flesh and in the Lord? Here's what Paul is saying,
- 11:42Philemon. Maybe, just maybe, maybe, on
- 11:48this M is fleeing from you. Getting away from you was so
- 11:53that he could meet me, and that in meeting me he would hear the
- 11:57gospel and the way I would present the gospel would in fact
- 12:01convict him, and he would indeed be saved.
- 12:06And in due time, not only would you have your servant back, but
- 12:09you would have a brother in Christ back.
- 12:11This is what Paul is saying. Hey, I want you finally meant to
- 12:15see the bigger picture here. And he's very careful with his
- 12:20words. Notice what he says here in the
- 12:22third word of verse 15 for this perhaps.
- 12:25Wow, Paul is very wise for this perhaps is why.
- 12:30Notice the the tone, Notice the carefulness of his words.
- 12:35I learned something from Paul here and how to counsel people
- 12:39and how to confront my fellow brother and sister who is
- 12:42enduring a difficult or painful situation.
- 12:45I'm called to be very wise in the way I speak into their
- 12:48situation. You and I are supposed to do the
- 12:51same. Be very gentle when you need to
- 12:55be gentle. Be firm when you need to be
- 12:57firm, Be silent when you need to be silent.
- 13:00You know, sometimes the best thing you can do for a person
- 13:02who's struggling is not give a theological explanation, but to
- 13:05just weep with them, Weep with those who weep.
- 13:10But here, Paul, knowing that Philemon was frustrated, angry,
- 13:14he he's speaking to him very strategically.
- 13:16Hey, I I'm inviting you to see what I'm seeing here.
- 13:20Philemon. I want you to see something that
- 13:23perhaps God has done behind the scenes.
- 13:25You saw someone who turned their back on you and betrayed you.
- 13:29But perhaps there is something more redemptive in all of this.
- 13:35The suggestion reveals something about Paul's belief system, does
- 13:38it not? It reveals something about his
- 13:40convictions. Not that the Lord authors people
- 13:42to sin against us. No, not at all.
- 13:45But he can draw out the good from the failures and the
- 13:48foolishness of others. That's what Paul believes.
- 13:52God is able to draw out. Good.
- 13:54God is able to rewrite the script.
- 13:58And from this verse, you and I are to draw out this incredible
- 14:01encouragement in light of Providence.
- 14:03And here's what it is. God is at work with and through
- 14:06you, ready for this. God is at work with and through
- 14:10the most unlikely and problematic people.
- 14:16That's where you're supposed to say Amen.
- 14:18God is at work with and through even the most unlikely and
- 14:23problematic people for your sanctification and ultimately
- 14:27your greater joy. Providence teaches that God is
- 14:35at work even in relational disappointments.
- 14:39Providence teaches that God is at work even when you are let
- 14:42down by somebody that you believed should not have let you
- 14:45down. In the case of Philemon, we see
- 14:50here that the principle from these verses is to trust God's
- 14:53wisdom when facing those let downs, those failures from
- 14:57others, those painful actions and words.
- 15:00You are supposed to be strengthened by the truth that
- 15:03God is at work. I can't see it.
- 15:07I may not understand it. This very much hurts, but it
- 15:10doesn't disqualify God's authorship behind this and how
- 15:15he's able to turn this around. How he knows something that I do
- 15:18not know. And in Philemon's case, again
- 15:21the separation of Onissimus prepared him to be faced with
- 15:24the gospel. This man who was on the run
- 15:28would in fact be set up by divine appointment to meet the
- 15:30apostle Paul and hear the thing that would save his soul.
- 15:34So he would be a slave of Christ and live for the glory of God.
- 15:38But in your case in mind, conditions that may lead to
- 15:42painful severances from others may have 100 different reasons
- 15:46why, 1000 different explanations to why.
- 15:53It could be to protect us from greater harm in the future.
- 15:57It could be to prune us to be more fruitful.
- 16:02It could be to purify you and I by removing polluting
- 16:05influences. It could be to enhance your
- 16:08peace by distancing you from unrepentant, troublesome
- 16:13sinners. Why does God do it?
- 16:17Or allow it rather? You may not understand it at
- 16:21first glance, but you can believe in love and God's loving
- 16:25care over the details, including the people that you know and may
- 16:30no longer know anymore. We we can believe about
- 16:35everything, right? Protection.
- 16:36Provision. Include this in your belief
- 16:39system. God supervises the people in and
- 16:43out of your life. But consider Paul's aim.
- 16:49I mean, he's explained this, but for what purpose?
- 16:51Why is Paul trying to introduce the concept of Providence with
- 16:54the separation between two men? It's so that he can encourage
- 16:58Philemon to find the grace in that truth to forgive on
- 17:02Isthmus. I want you to see that though.
- 17:07This was so heart wrenching, Philemon, that God had perhaps a
- 17:13purpose behind it and that should stimulate you.
- 17:16If you include God in the equation, and God is for you and
- 17:20he is with you and he is leading you in every aspect of your
- 17:22life, then how can you withhold mercy?
- 17:26How can you reserve compassion? Who would have thought that
- 17:32believing Providence would make you and I are more forgiving
- 17:34people? It should.
- 17:38Well how does that work? Well, again, Joseph understood
- 17:41that before Philemon even existed.
- 17:45You want to talk about relational let downs?
- 17:47We've all I'm sure here. You lived long enough.
- 17:50Even if you were a child, you have witnessed, probably in your
- 17:52family and churches, that you grew up.
- 17:54You've seen people hurt other people.
- 17:56People that you never thought would hurt.
- 17:58Hurting other people. You want to talk about hurt.
- 18:01Imagine your siblings throwing you into a physical pit, not a
- 18:04metaphorical pit. I'm in a pit.
- 18:06No, in a real pit like a caged animal.
- 18:12And while you're there shivering and wondering what's going to
- 18:14happen next, they're up there on solid ground wondering if they
- 18:17should kill you or do something more profitable with you.
- 18:20And finally, the consensus was, let's let's sell them into
- 18:23slavery. So here's this caravan that
- 18:25comes by and you have a price on your head.
- 18:28These people that you had sleepovers with, These people
- 18:31that you played games with, These people later on that would
- 18:33eventually be jealous of you. But these people that you knew
- 18:35day in and day out sold you for a check.
- 18:39You, not your possessions, you. And here you are now going into
- 18:44a world of unknown, and you're hired by a very high official,
- 18:48and there you are, faithfully working the favor of God is on
- 18:51you and it's spilling over into this gentile territory.
- 18:54And one day you're falsely accused of rape, falsely
- 18:58accused, and all you did was good.
- 19:01All you did was blessed. All you did was make someone
- 19:04more profitable and with one testimony of a wicked woman.
- 19:09Now here you are with a tainted reputation, and you're in for a
- 19:13troublesome future. Now you're no longer in a pit,
- 19:16You're in a prison. Relational let downs.
- 19:20That's relational. Let downs.
- 19:23And you know the story. Joseph eventually comes to the
- 19:25place of prominence, the second command of all of Egypt, and God
- 19:28and his Providence brings about his brothers and eventually his
- 19:33father and the people of God were preserved.
- 19:36But by the end of the book, the brothers are nervous.
- 19:39Jacob dies and they see their their brother that they hurt in
- 19:43the past very seriously. Who can act one word, command
- 19:48their death. And so they're nervous, and they
- 19:50come up with this little plan to try to ease perhaps any tension
- 19:54or any vengeful plot that he has.
- 19:56And Joseph comforts them. He comforts up with the truth of
- 20:01Providence. What you meant for evil, God
- 20:06meant for good. OK, we know that.
- 20:11We put it on our coffee cups. We put it on Facebook.
- 20:14OK, Put it on your heart. What do I mean by that?
- 20:18What is he trying to say? I can forgive you.
- 20:22I can't hold anything against you.
- 20:24Why? Because I believe in God's
- 20:26Providence. I believe that though you are
- 20:30accountable for what you did to me.
- 20:31God oversaw it, God supervised it, and he turned it about for
- 20:37the good. So how can I be bitter against
- 20:39you when you were the vehicle for the good that I am enjoying
- 20:43today and you and I are invited to do the same, to be a
- 20:52forgiving people because you believe God has all power.
- 20:54He's he's he's in control. He's in control.
- 20:57Yeah. He's in control of you getting
- 20:58your job. I know he's in control of
- 21:00control of the house that you need to get.
- 21:02No, he's in control. When people mess up in your life
- 21:05and put a bitter taste in your mouth, you can also say, I don't
- 21:12get it. I don't know what this is for.
- 21:15All I know is that God has good in mind for me.
- 21:20I can trust him. There's a powerful Psalm that
- 21:24illustrates this truth. It's Psalm 76, verse 10.
- 21:28The psalmist says, surely the wrath of man shall praise you.
- 21:33Psalm 7610. Surely the wrath of man shall
- 21:37praise you. The remnant of wrath you will
- 21:39put on like a belt. What is he saying there?
- 21:42God is able to take the anger of man, the vengeance of man, the
- 21:46evil of man, and make it praise him.
- 21:50God is able to take wicked men and their ideas and their plots
- 21:56and end up causing it to give glory unto Himself.
- 22:00Even the wrath of man will praise God and notice he talks
- 22:03about the remnant of math wrath being around like a belt, like
- 22:06it's like a tool to him. He's in control of this, it's
- 22:11subject to him, not the other way around.
- 22:16And so the wrath against Joseph ended up praising God.
- 22:21The wrath against our Lord Jesus Christ ended up what?
- 22:24Saving humanity. And Peter alludes that in Acts
- 22:28chapter two he talks about the Providence of God even in the
- 22:30crucifixion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
- 22:33Providence, Providence in relational let downs.
- 22:36But Providence isn't just operating in people and through
- 22:39people and in situations with people.
- 22:42Go to Galatians chapter four with me and let's see how
- 22:44Providence continues to work in different areas of life.
- 22:49In Galatians chapter 4, verse 13.
- 22:55If the shepherd of my life is able to take the evil words and
- 22:58selfish actions of others to bring good in me, how can I
- 23:01withhold forgiveness? But notice what Paul says to
- 23:05this group of believers. He is rehearsing their history
- 23:09together because at this point of his writing, there was
- 23:12tension on their part, at least. They were being told things
- 23:15about Paul, and Paul is trying to remind them where things
- 23:18began. And so he says about their
- 23:20beginnings in Galatians 413 and 14.
- 23:23You know, it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached
- 23:27the gospel to you at 1st. And though my condition was a
- 23:31trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me
- 23:34as an Angel of God, as Christ Jesus.
- 23:38So Paul is saying, can I remind you how we met?
- 23:42Can can you remember how you treated me like an Angel?
- 23:44You actually treated me like Jesus Christ himself.
- 23:47What happened to your affection toward me?
- 23:50But notice what he said in the beginning of verse 13.
- 23:52You know that it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached
- 23:58the gospel to you. Now, so many people have been
- 24:01fixated on the nature of Paul's bodily ailment that they
- 24:05overlook a much more important truth.
- 24:08And there's no even consensus of what kind of thing Paul is
- 24:11talking about. Some say malaria, Some say he
- 24:13had eye problems. Some say it was the the
- 24:16repercussions of the beating that he took.
- 24:18If you read acts with the stoning that he experienced,
- 24:20there's no agreement. But whatever it was, it was
- 24:24serious enough for look at verse 14 and though my condition was a
- 24:28trial to you, it was a serious illness.
- 24:32For it to be technically could have been a burden to others to
- 24:34take care of him, and people debate what that means, but it
- 24:37was significant. There's no doubt about that this
- 24:40might be unclear. What is clear here is that Paul
- 24:43makes it plain by linking this problem that he had in his body
- 24:51and how that was the reason why he remained in Galatia, and as a
- 24:55result was able to meet this group of Galatians and then
- 24:58preach the gospel to them. I was prevented from moving
- 25:03forward in my travels because of this bodily ailment, and it was
- 25:08the means for you to receive the truth that would save your soul.
- 25:13Implying then, perhaps humanly speaking, if it wasn't for this
- 25:17bodily ailment, perhaps Paul at this moment would have missed
- 25:20the opportunity to meet these Galatians.
- 25:23He credits this situation for being the instrument God used to
- 25:29park him in this area and to deliver this truth to this
- 25:32people who needed to hear the truth.
- 25:36Isn't this glorious? This is fascinating to me.
- 25:39Because listen, whatever this ailment was, it was potent
- 25:43enough to keep Paul there. I can't move on like this.
- 25:48He had to stay. That's how strong it was.
- 25:50But it was not strong enough to keep him from preaching the
- 25:54gospel. Strong enough to keep him there,
- 25:58physically not overwhelming to the point where he couldn't
- 26:00deliver the truth of Jesus Christ.
- 26:02Think about Providence. Think about how God allowed the
- 26:07right measurement of physical suffering to keep him where he
- 26:12need to keep it, but not to paralyze him from doing what he
- 26:14really needed to do. And that's to share the truth
- 26:17with these people. So God is providential.
- 26:21He has a purpose. You ready for this?
- 26:22Even with physical limitations, even with sickness and seasons
- 26:28where we are not at full strength, even in that God has
- 26:32something in mind, how can you feel like you're losing in this
- 26:36life when you have Christ as your shepherd?
- 26:39This is what Paul is confessing. And you and I should rejoice at
- 26:42his words here in verse 13 because you and I learned that
- 26:45divine Providence demands that delay and debilitation be
- 26:51servants of the soul winning message of Jesus Christ.
- 26:56Delay and debilitation have to submit to divine Providence.
- 27:02God is in control. You and I should see Providence
- 27:08even in that. I may not understand it.
- 27:10It might even be painful. But there's purpose.
- 27:14I remember the testimony of an old man from Canada who's in
- 27:19heaven today. And one of the things that I
- 27:22cherished about church was that if he had the open slot, wasn't
- 27:28a minister, wasn't a pastor, just somebody who attended the
- 27:30church faithfully to have conversations with him.
- 27:33I love to talk to people who have walked longer with the
- 27:36Lord. I love to be drawn to people who
- 27:38have a crown of Gray head. And you can tell that when they
- 27:42go to church, they're in church to worship God.
- 27:46People that have grown over the decades, I still am drawn to
- 27:50those people I want to know. Tell me the stories about God in
- 27:53your life. What has God done in your life?
- 27:57Tell me some things that you've learned in life and one time not
- 28:02even asking a question. He brought this story to our
- 28:05attention. Me and a couple others about a
- 28:06story of of a relative, I believe, if my memory serves me
- 28:09right that had an infection back when where he was from.
- 28:14He, he had an infection and they were praying others friends and
- 28:18family praying for his, for his healing, praying for his
- 28:21restoration and nothing was happening.
- 28:23And so with prayer they used wisdom, right?
- 28:25I mean wisdom. Some people in the world need
- 28:27that. Yes, you pray and wait on God,
- 28:29but you can also use other means that God gives like medication
- 28:33and antibiotics. And so that's what they did.
- 28:37They got the prescription for him and they would regularly go
- 28:40to this pharmacist to receive this prescription and to apply
- 28:43it. And at the same time they were
- 28:44praying. God healed this man.
- 28:46God healed this man, heal our brother.
- 28:48And nothing was happening. And over time, this pharmacist
- 28:51got to know this man that I'm speaking about who is sharing
- 28:54this testimony, and the others who came to the aid of their
- 28:57relative. And one day the gospel comes out
- 29:02and this pharmacist hears the gospel, and this pharmacist gets
- 29:06saved. He becomes born again.
- 29:09And this is how he shared the story.
- 29:11On that particular day, when this man who was prescribed the
- 29:14medication got saved, they went back home and their relative was
- 29:17healed. What do you make of that?
- 29:24Providence. Providence.
- 29:27Because it was that illness and that delayed healing that caused
- 29:31him to meet this pharmacist to receive the medication to treat
- 29:33this illness. And it wasn't until this man and
- 29:37receiving the gospel that that man who needed the healing
- 29:40received it. Providence always at work, even
- 29:46with your weakness in the flesh, your sickness in your body.
- 29:52Paul could say confidently with this truth.
- 29:54It was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the
- 29:57gospel to you. Let's go to another text, right?
- 30:03To see Providence at work, turn with me to Luke chapter two in
- 30:07the first 5 verses together. I'm just giving you a few
- 30:13examples. You read this book cover to
- 30:16cover and you will see story after story, example after
- 30:20example of this Providence at play.
- 30:24This is speaking about the birth of our savior and we can talk
- 30:29about the birth of our savior more than once a year, right?
- 30:32Amen. Let's read the 1st 5 verses
- 30:35together. Luke 2, verse one.
- 30:38In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all
- 30:42the world should be registered. This was the first registration
- 30:46when Quirinius was governor of Syria, and all went to be
- 30:50registered, each to his own town.
- 30:53And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of
- 30:56Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, which is called
- 31:00Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David to be
- 31:03registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
- 31:07Here you have an actual record of history with names of
- 31:11prominent real people, and we have with it authentic political
- 31:15commentary, and we should rejoice at the factuality and
- 31:20the historicity of the word of God.
- 31:22But the joy should exceed far beyond that, especially here
- 31:25with this text. Yet we have this historical
- 31:28narrative, but we also see Providence at work.
- 31:32The first Roman emperor named Caesar Augustus called for a
- 31:35worldwide registration. Rome took over the world at this
- 31:38point, and it was more than just a census.
- 31:41It was a census with taxation. And so at that call, with that
- 31:45request, the world shifted. It was not optional.
- 31:48If you were under the rule of Rome, this was demanded.
- 31:51It was commanded for you under this authority, which included
- 31:56the nation of Israel, and with the thousands upon a thousands
- 32:00of people who are influenced by this one decision, we zoom into
- 32:03one family, Joseph, here with his very pregnant wife.
- 32:09They are abiding in Nazareth. And because of Joseph's
- 32:12background and because of the census, he has to now take a
- 32:15bumpy journey to Bethlehem so that they can honor the request
- 32:21of the government. And while being in Bethlehem,
- 32:24you know the rest of the story very well.
- 32:26Mary gave birth to the Son of God, and for the first time he
- 32:31entered into our world Incarnate flesh and blood.
- 32:36You know why this is so significant?
- 32:39It's significant because prophecy hundreds of years
- 32:42before this time predicted that King Messiah must come out, be
- 32:47born where? In Bethlehem.
- 32:50But where were they? They weren't in Bethlehem, They
- 32:53were in Nazareth. So let me remind you of the
- 32:57prophecy, what Micah said. You know this very well, Micah
- 32:5952 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrata, who are too little to be among
- 33:05the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me.
- 33:09One who is to be ruler in Israel, who is coming forth, is
- 33:13from old, from ancient days. Wow.
- 33:17There is someone who is going to be born a ruler in Israel who
- 33:20comes from the ancient of days, who comes from eternity past.
- 33:25That's a proof of the deity of Christ by the way, Bethlehem,
- 33:28Ephrata. And then you come to Luke 2 and
- 33:32you read about this woman named Mary who was to host the Messiah
- 33:35in her womb for nine months and deliver this Messiah into the
- 33:38world. When you read on as we just read
- 33:40here, they're not in Bethlehem, they're in Nazareth.
- 33:46They can't be in Nazareth for the birth of the Savior because
- 33:50prophecy said Bethlehem. So how does God fulfill this
- 33:55word? How does God move this so that
- 33:58it can be in alignment with what he had said centuries before?
- 34:02Does he appear to Joseph like he did in Matthew chapter 2 and
- 34:06say, hey, listen, you got to take the baby out of here, you
- 34:09got to flee? And the Angel of the Lord warns
- 34:11him and Joseph and the knight takes his family and flees to
- 34:15Egypt. Does he do that here?
- 34:17Does he appear to Joseph? Hey, Joseph, it's me again.
- 34:21The Angel of the Lord. You know, Micah, 52, says that
- 34:24the Savior needs to be born in Bethlehem.
- 34:26You got to get up now. We got to fulfill prophecy.
- 34:27Let's go. Let's go.
- 34:28Let's go. Is that what he does?
- 34:31No. He uses a Pagan ruler with an
- 34:36edict that would move the world and bring this one family where
- 34:42they needed to be. What do you call that?
- 34:45Providence, because God can lead by supernaturally revealing a
- 34:51plan to you. There's no reason for us to deny
- 34:53that God can appear and say, hey, you need to do this.
- 34:55And there are people who have been called into ministry with
- 34:58supernatural testimony, and there are people who have done
- 35:01things for the Lord where they were guided by the Lord in very
- 35:03strange ways. You think about Saul and and and
- 35:08Samuel. I love this story.
- 35:09When Saul was supposed to be king, Samuel was told ahead of
- 35:12time by the Lord as a prophet. By this time tomorrow and this
- 35:16place, you're going to meet a man.
- 35:17He's supposed to be the king of Israel.
- 35:19That's how Samuel received the revelation for the first king of
- 35:22Israel. And what happened to Saul, who
- 35:24was supposed to be that king? They God appeared to him and
- 35:27say, Saul, now you're going to meet a man at this area.
- 35:29I already told him about it. And you're going to meet him and
- 35:31he's going to know you're going to be king.
- 35:32No. You know what he does?
- 35:33He lets loose donkeys. And Saul, with a servant, run
- 35:38out for days to try to find these donkeys.
- 35:42And upon that journey they stumble upon an area where the
- 35:45prophet Samuel was to come, and they intersect.
- 35:49So God LED one man by directly speaking to him, and God LED
- 35:52another man by letting loose some possessions, and he had to
- 35:55go on a hunt for lost vehicles, and they ran into each other.
- 36:00What is that? That's called Providence.
- 36:05God is always leading you. God is always leading me, and
- 36:12this even makes me wonder of the deeper significance of the
- 36:14global transitions and shifts that we are seeing now.
- 36:17Were we not all impacted by decision of a few?
- 36:21The whole world just a few years ago?
- 36:24Did not our daily routine and rhythms change?
- 36:26And what about the rise and fall of political leaders and
- 36:30kingdoms? What about the rapid advancement
- 36:32of technology? What about the legalization of
- 36:35certain laws and policies? Could it be that just like what
- 36:38we see in Luke Chapter 2, there is a different, deeper work
- 36:42taking place beyond our understanding?
- 36:45I believe so. Not that I take every highlight
- 36:47and say that's what's what's happening here in the Bible.
- 36:50That's what the Bible predicted. Not necessarily so, but they're
- 36:52still unfulfilled prophecies that have to be fulfilled.
- 36:59And I personally believe what took place and what's still
- 37:01taking place today is preparing the stage for the final moments
- 37:03of human history. But let's zoom into your life.
- 37:11What do we make of cancelled flights?
- 37:14What do you make of a flat tire? What do you make of rescheduled
- 37:18appointments? What do you make of prolonged
- 37:20and delayed projects beyond your control?
- 37:23What do you make of these things?
- 37:25I believe that if we allow this truth to permeate our minds and
- 37:28our hearts, we can go from huffs and puffs to whispers of faith,
- 37:34because we trust in our God who leads us in strange ways.
- 37:39Providence, you and I are encouraged to believe God with
- 37:47our tomorrow's because they're already planned and prepared and
- 37:50we just walk into them surprised.
- 37:54And there's a time coming where we will look back at the whole
- 37:57thing and praise God for eternity for the millions and
- 38:01billions of stories that he wrote.
- 38:03At the same time, I present this message to you because NBC is a
- 38:10monument of God's Providence, and I pray that it would
- 38:13continue to grow as a monument of his Providence, but for you
- 38:19also to be encouraged for your own life and the examples I
- 38:23simply provided you today, that he is providential even in my
- 38:26relational let downs. He's providential even in my
- 38:28physical limitations. He is providential in all sorts
- 38:31of inconvenient circumstances, like when a census goes out and
- 38:35you have a very pregnant wife and it's probably not the most
- 38:37profitable thing for her to travel on a donkey.
- 38:43Discomforting, sure. Interrupting.
- 38:47Sure. But something bigger is
- 38:49happening. Something bigger is happening.
- 38:52Take joy in your God, who takes joy in guiding your life filled
- 39:00with surprises. This is our God.
- 39:03He is worthy of worship. Lord, we thank you that you are
- 39:07filled with surprising and awesome works.
- 39:12And your leadership is perfect. Thank you for your leadership at
- 39:16Maranatha Bible Church. Thank you for how you are
- 39:19writing the stories of every individual here who belongs to
- 39:22you. Thank you that you can even take
- 39:24the wrath of man and cause it to praise you.
- 39:26Thank you, Lord, that in every facet of our existence not one
- 39:31thing is roaming without your supervision, your ordination,
- 39:38your leading. We pray that these truths would
- 39:41comfort us and would cause us to be excited to serve you and to
- 39:44trust you in the unknown. We give you praise and thanks in
- 39:47Jesus name. Amen.
- 39:49Amen. Let's stand and worship the
- 39:50Lord.
