- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it is the 25th of
- 0:17June and you and I are gathering together to put down the hectic
- 0:22pace of the day. Well, maybe your days aren't
- 0:25hectic. Gee, that sounds nice, but to
- 0:27put down whatever your day looks like and to say God, you are
- 0:31welcome in our day as we open up His Word and we allow His Spirit
- 0:36to move inside of us and share something of Him as we continue
- 0:41to read through the book of James.
- 0:43How fantastic. I don't know how long you've
- 0:45been doing this with me. It might be a long time or you
- 0:48might have just joined in, but whoever you are, wherever you
- 0:51are, how many of there you are. Is that even correct English as
- 0:56you gather around the wireless, the iPod.
- 1:01These aren't even things that he went.
- 1:02No one has iPods anymore, do they?
- 1:04The iPhone kind of killed our poor iPod.
- 1:06Ohhh. I still have a very old limited
- 1:09edition U2 iPod from I'm going to stay close to 20 years ago.
- 1:14It's it's a beauty, but now it's more of a a paperweight that I
- 1:17enjoy. But whatever it is that you are
- 1:19gathering around the car stereo, the Bluetooth speaker.
- 1:22Great to have your company today.
- 1:25Whether you just do this a couple of days a week or you are
- 1:28a religious listener, pun intended everyday friends.
- 1:33It's so good to have your company because we are going to
- 1:36continue this journey, reading through this practical manual
- 1:42for living that James gives us. So let's do it, shall we?
- 1:46Let us continue with what we are here to do reading together.
- 1:50James Chapter 4. What is causing the quarrels and
- 2:05fights among you that they come from?
- 2:07The evil desires that war within you.
- 2:10You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it.
- 2:15You are jealous of what others have, but you can't get it, so
- 2:19you fight and wage war to take it from them.
- 2:23Yet you don't have what you want because you don't ask God for
- 2:27it. And even when you ask, you don't
- 2:30get it because your motives are all wrong.
- 2:33You want only what will give you pleasure.
- 2:36Ah, you adulterers, Don't you realise that friendship with the
- 2:40world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again, if you want to
- 2:46be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.
- 2:52Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning?
- 2:55They say that God is passionate, that the Spirit He has placed
- 2:59within us should be faithful to Him, and He gives grace
- 3:04generously. As the Scriptures say, God
- 3:08opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
- 3:13So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil and he will
- 3:17flee from you. Come close to God, and God will
- 3:22come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners.
- 3:26Purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God
- 3:31and the world. Let there be tears for what you
- 3:35have done. Let there be sorrow and deep
- 3:38grief. Let there be sadness instead of
- 3:41laughter, and gloom instead of joy.
- 3:45Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up in
- 3:50honour. Don't speak evil against each
- 3:55other, dear brothers and sisters.
- 3:57If you criticise and judge each other, then you are criticising
- 4:01and judging God's law. But your job is to obey the law,
- 4:06not to judge whether it applies to you.
- 4:08God alone, who gave the law, is the judge.
- 4:13He alone has the power to save or to destroy.
- 4:18O what right do you have to judge your neighbour?
- 4:23Look here, you who say today or tomorrow we are going to a
- 4:27certain town and we'll stay there a year, we will do
- 4:31business there and make a profit.
- 4:34How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow?
- 4:37Your life is like the morning fog.
- 4:40It's here a little while, then it's gone.
- 4:44What you ought to say is, if the Lord wants us to, we will live
- 4:49and do this or that. Otherwise, you are boasting
- 4:52about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is
- 4:56evil. Remember, it is sin to know what
- 5:01you ought to do and then not do it.
- 5:15Our Lord Jesus, it is so easy to claim the driver's seat of our
- 5:19lives. The world tells us to sit in
- 5:24that seat and to take hold of our destiny and go forward
- 5:29boldly. Ah, but here you tell us that
- 5:32friendship with the world makes an enemy of you because it's not
- 5:36us, ultimately, who was in that driver's seat.
- 5:40And James tells us so clearly that we need you to be the
- 5:45driver. We need to let you be the judge
- 5:48and not take on that role ourselves and that we need to
- 5:52let you hold the future and not try and control everything with
- 5:56their own selfish desires. So Lord Jesus, we unbuckle our
- 6:02seat belt, we open our door and we climb out of the driver's
- 6:07seat. Please, please take residence in
- 6:10that seat as we settle into the passenger seat and knowing that
- 6:15you guide our lives with your immense wisdom and kindness and
- 6:22love and righteousness and justice.
- 6:25You are so much better than us at this.
- 6:28And so we relinquish control and hand our lives to you, our holy,
- 6:33holy Saviour and God, and we pray all of this, and we offer
- 6:39all of this to you and your name, Jesus.
- 6:43Ah, man.
