- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to RADIOI Children's Story Hour. As a reminder,
- 0:06RADIOI is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:10blind or have other disabilities that make it difficult to
- 0:13read printed material. Today, we'll be reading from several children's
- 0:20books about a holiday in May called Mother's Day. This
- 0:27is a holiday that takes place on the second Sunday
- 0:31of May, and it's a time to celebrate an honor
- 0:36and remember mother's, grandmother's, aunts, cousins, or any woman who
- 0:43has an important part in your life. Your reader today
- 0:48is Patty. So we're going to start with the book
- 0:52called Mother, You're the Best, But Sister, You're a Pest.
- 0:59This book is written and illustrated by Diane de Groat,
- 1:04published by Harper Collins Publisher in two thousand and eight.
- 1:10I will tell you that this is a story about
- 1:13a group of animals, not about people. But these animals
- 1:18act like people and talk like people. The people in
- 1:22the main characters in the story are possums. So now
- 1:27let's listen to this book. Mother You're the Best, But
- 1:30Sister You're a pest? What rhymes with mother? Gilbert asked
- 1:38he was making a card for Mother's Day. Foe Lewis shouted,
- 1:45that doesn't rhyme. Gilbert said no. Lewis agreed, but I
- 1:50think I just spelled something wrong. Patty was more helpful.
- 1:56How about brother? She said that rhymes. Gilbert thought, dear mother,
- 2:03I'd rather have a brother beside his little sister. Lola
- 2:10could really be a pest sometimes. He finally wrote, roses
- 2:16are red, violets are blue. You're the best mother, and
- 2:20I love you. Then he signed his name and put
- 2:24x's under it. The illustration here shows the young animals
- 2:30sitting around a table, and they've got pencils and papers,
- 2:34scissors and erasers and markers, and they're making mothers stay cards.
- 2:38And Gilbert, who is a possum, is right there with them.
- 2:44Missus Bird came over to help Louis with his spelling.
- 2:49Lewis had written I love my mommy as much as salami. Hmmm.
- 2:57She said to Louis, will you be doing something special
- 3:00for your mother besides giving her a card. Lewis turned
- 3:05red and said, we're going out to dinner. I have
- 3:08to dress up. I'm going to buy my mother flowers,
- 3:13Philip said. Margaret said, I'm going to bring my mother
- 3:17breakfast in bed Gilbert thought these were all good ideas.
- 3:22He wanted to do something special for his mother too.
- 3:27When Gilbert woke up on Mother's Day, he tiptoed down
- 3:31to the kitchen to make breakfast for mother. He put
- 3:36two slices of bread into the toast, then poured some
- 3:40wheaty flakes, not just into a bowl, but all over
- 3:44the table. Gilbert was putting the cereal back into the
- 3:48box when he smelled something burning the toast. Gilbert scraped
- 3:54off the burnt toast, then put everything onto a tray
- 3:58along with his mother's day card. When he picked up
- 4:02the tray, the orange juice spilled all over the card.
- 4:07He wiped it off as best he could and carried
- 4:10the tray up the stairs very slowly. When Gilbert got
- 4:17to mother's room, Lola was already there. Mother was reading
- 4:23a card that had scribbles all over it. What a
- 4:26beautiful card, Lola, she said. Gilbert didn't think the scribbling
- 4:32card was so beautiful, and when he placed the tray
- 4:35in front of mother, Lola helped herself to a piece
- 4:38of toast. Mother said, what a wonderful Mother's Day, surprised Gilbert,
- 4:43but Gilbert didn't think it was wonderful at all. The
- 4:47illustration here shows the mother possum and the little one
- 4:52named Lola in bed together, and she's looking at the
- 4:55scribbly card that Lola has made. And there's Gilbert, the
- 4:59possum brother, walking in with the tray that he so
- 5:03neatly put together with the cereal and the toast and
- 5:07the juice and his happy Mother's Day card on it. Continuing,
- 5:14Gilbert went into his room and opened up his piggy back.
- 5:18Maybe he had enough money to buy a gift. He
- 5:22counted out one dollar and four cents. When he got downstairs,
- 5:28Lola was sitting in mother's lap holding a bunch of vandelions.
- 5:34Mother said, thank you for the pretty flowers, Lola. Gilbert
- 5:39didn't think the weeds were so pretty, and he didn't
- 5:43want Lola to sit on mother's lap. He asked, do
- 5:47you want to go to the store with me? Lola.
- 5:49Lola was excited. Gilbert had never asked her to go
- 5:53to the store with him before. She jumped right off
- 5:56mother's lap and followed Gilbert to the corner store. At
- 6:01the store, Gilbert saw many Mother's Day gifts, flowers, books, chocolate,
- 6:09but he didn't have enough money. For any of them.
- 6:12I want ice cream, Lola shouted. No. Lola, Gilbert said,
- 6:17I want to buy something from mother. Mother likes ice cream.
- 6:22Lola said hmm. Gilbert said, Mother does like chocolate ice cream,
- 6:28and it only costs one dollar. I'll carry it, Lola said.
- 6:35As they walked home. I'll carry it, Gilbert said, but
- 6:40Lola started to cry, so Gilbert had to let her
- 6:43carry the ice cream cone. The sun was warm, and
- 6:48Lola walked very, very slowly, the ice cream started to melt.
- 6:56By the time they got home. There was only a
- 6:59soggy home left. Now Gilbert had no gift for mother
- 7:05and no money, just a little sister covered with chocolate
- 7:10ice cream. The illustration here shows Gilbert and Lola walking
- 7:16down the sidewalk and Lola's got the drippy, messy chocolate
- 7:22ice cream cone. It's stripping all over herself and she's
- 7:25licking her fingers, continuing Gilbert didn't want mother to see
- 7:32the mess. You need a bath, he said. Lola was excited,
- 7:37Gilbert had never given her a bath before. She hopped
- 7:41right out of her dirty clothes and into the bathtub.
- 7:44But Gilbert had to play rubber ducky races before Lola
- 7:48would let him wash the ice cream out of her hair.
- 7:53After lunch, Mother wanted to take a nap in the hammock.
- 7:58Lola climbed into the hammock with her. Gilbert didn't want
- 8:03Lola to snuggle with mother. He said, you can nap
- 8:08in your own bed. Lola, come on, I'll read you
- 8:11a story. Loula was excited Gilbert had never wanted to
- 8:16help with naptime before. She jumped right out of that
- 8:20hammock and ran up to her room. Gilbert started to
- 8:24read a story about a Martian spaceman, but Lola cried
- 8:30until he read her favorite book, good Night Move three time.
- 8:38When Lola was finally asleep, Gilbert went outside to be
- 8:43with mother, but she wasn't there. He sat down on
- 8:47the steps and sighed. Just then Mother came outside and
- 8:53sat down next to him. She opened up a photo album.
- 8:58On the first page was a picture of a baby
- 9:02possum crying. Gilbert made a grumpy face and said, Lola.
- 9:09Mother laughed, this is a picture of you, Gilbert. When
- 9:13you were little. You cried a lot, just like Lola.
- 9:19Gilbert said, no, I did it. The illustration here shows
- 9:26Gilbert and his mother sitting together looking at a photo
- 9:31of them, and there's a picture of a baby possum Gilbert,
- 9:35and it looks like in the picture that Gilbert was crying.
- 9:42Mother smiled and said, you wanted to read the same
- 9:46story over and over. Gilbert didn't remember that either. What
- 9:52else he wanted to know? Mother picked Gilbert up and
- 9:56placed him on her lap. She tickled him and said,
- 10:01you wanted to sit on my lap all the time.
- 10:04Gilbert giggled. He still liked to sit on mother's lap.
- 10:09Mother said, thank you for taking care of Lola today.
- 10:14That was a very special Mother's Day gift. Gilbert was
- 10:21surprised and said it was. Mother kissed him on the
- 10:26nose and said it was just what I wanted. That
- 10:32everyone went out to dinner and for dessert chocolate ice cream.
- 10:40It was just what mother wanted. And now I have
- 10:46another book to read. It's called A Present for Mom.
- 10:52The author is Vivian French and the illustrator is Dana Kubick.
- 10:59It was published by Candlewick Press in two thousand and two.
- 11:04From the inside cover, it's the day before Mother's Day.
- 11:10Each of the children in Stanley's family has found a
- 11:14present for Mom, all except Stanley try as he might,
- 11:20and he tries very hard. Stanley can't find just the
- 11:25right gift to show his love. Will he come up
- 11:29with something before it's too late? Now? This book is
- 11:34also about a family of animals and their mother, and
- 11:39this time all the animals are cats. It was the
- 11:46day before Mother's Day. Stanley went to see his big
- 11:50brother Rex. What are you giving mom? He asked, Flowers,
- 11:56said Rex. She likes flowers. Good idea, said Stanley, and
- 12:03he hurried off to the garden. Stanley picked five of
- 12:10the biggest flowers that he could see, but by the
- 12:15time he got back inside, all the petals had fallen off.
- 12:20Oh no, said Stanley, and his ears drooped. The illustration
- 12:27shoot here shows a little cat named Stanley. He's dressed
- 12:31in a red and white striped shirt and he has
- 12:34blue overalls on and tennis shee. He's picking those flowers
- 12:40and walking towards the house, and there when he gets
- 12:44to the door, all the petals have fallen off. Continue.
- 12:52Stanley went to find his big sister Queeney. She was
- 12:57counting the money in her bank. Is that for Mom's present?
- 13:02Stanley asked, Yes, said Queeney, I'm giving her a box
- 13:07of candy. Oh, said Stanley, and he rushed off to
- 13:12find his own bank. Stanley climbed up to the shelf
- 13:19to reach his bank. He wanted to buy Mom candy too,
- 13:25but when the bank fell open, it was empty except
- 13:30for one piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Oh no, said Stanley,
- 13:36and his whiskers quivered. Stanley went to look for his
- 13:42biggest sister, Flora. What are you doing, he asked, making
- 13:48Mom a Mother's daycake? Laura said. Hooray, said Stanley, and
- 13:54he dashed out of the kitchen. Stanley's mud cake looked beautiful,
- 14:04but not for long. Oh no, said Stanley, and his
- 14:09tail dragged behind him. The illustrations here show Stanley making
- 14:17a cake out of brown mud, and it does look
- 14:21a bit like a cake, but he falls down and
- 14:26drops it, and now it's just a pile of mud
- 14:30and a muddy mess. At that, Stanley went slowly upstairs
- 14:37to look for a present for Mom. He tipped out
- 14:42his cardboard box of cars, but they were all chipped
- 14:47or dented. Flora appeared in the doorway. Mom says, it's bedtime,
- 14:54she said. That night, Stanley didn't sleep very well, The
- 15:02illustration here shows Stanley the cat in his bed covered up,
- 15:08and he has a stuffed mouse that's lying there beside him,
- 15:13and all around his room there's little things that look
- 15:17like he might be dreaming about birds and candy and
- 15:21cakes and flowers that are losing their petals. Continuing. Early
- 15:29next morning, Flora, Queenie, and Rex came into Stanley's room.
- 15:36What's the matter, Rex asked, I don't have anything for
- 15:42a mom, said Stanley. Just give her a kiss, said Flora.
- 15:48That's what she'd like best. Sanley sat bolt upright, I know,
- 15:55he said, I know what to do. Are you coming,
- 16:00said Queenye in a minute, Stanley said. The illustration here
- 16:06shows Stanley getting out of bed and his three siblings
- 16:12are holding the gifts that they have for their mom,
- 16:15the flowers and the cake and the candy, all wrapped
- 16:19up as a present. Stanley's just sitting there, excited to
- 16:24get busy on his project. Flora, Queenie, and Rex went
- 16:32downstairs to give mom their presents. Flowers, said Mom, they're lovely,
- 16:40and my favorite candies and what a beautiful cake. But
- 16:50where Stanley? Suddenly Sandy Stanley was standing in the doorway
- 17:00carrying his big hardboard box. Happy Mother's Day, he said.
- 17:07Mom opened the box, stan Lee said, Rex, and Flora
- 17:12and Queeny, there's nothing inside. The illustration here shows the
- 17:20cat brothers and sisters looking inside the empty box, and
- 17:25their mother is there with them too. Stanley is just
- 17:30sitting there watching with a smile on his face. Yes,
- 17:36there is, said Stanley. It's a box of kisses. I've
- 17:40filled it right up to the top. Oh, Stanley said Mom.
- 17:46It's a wonderful present. And she kissed Stanley's nose. Don't
- 17:53use them up all at once, said Rex. Mom smiled.
- 17:59I think boxes of kisses last forever and ever. Yes,
- 18:06said Stanley, forever and ever and ever. But he gave
- 18:13Mom another kiss just in case. And the illustration here
- 18:19shows the three little cats, two sisters and a brother,
- 18:24watching as the mother cat has lifted Stanley up into
- 18:30her arm and he is giving her a big kiss.
- 18:38And now I think we have time for one more book.
- 18:43This one is simply called Mother's Day. The author is
- 18:48Anne Rockwell and the illustrator is Lizzie Rockwell. It was
- 18:55published by Harper Collins Publisher in two thousand and four. Eveleene,
- 19:05what are you going to do at school today? Maman
- 19:09asked me, I can't tell you. I said, that's a secret.
- 19:16So on this page, the illustration shows a young girl
- 19:20named Evelene. She's eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast
- 19:26and an apple and it looks like juice in a clasp,
- 19:29and her mother is packing her school lunch into a
- 19:34blue lunch box. Continuing at school, Nicholas and I walked
- 19:44down the hall together. He said, Hey, Evelene, did you
- 19:50remember to bring one? I nodded and showed him my
- 19:56shiny gold button. Mine's yellow with red stripes, he said.
- 20:05The illustration here shows Nicholas and Eveleen walking down the
- 20:09hallway at school and they each have a button in
- 20:13their hand. Eveleene's button is shiny in gold, and Nicholas
- 20:21has red stripes. It's yellow with red stripes. Continuing at
- 20:31circle time, Missus Mattoff said, what holiday will we celebrate
- 20:37this Sunday? Mother's Day? We shouted good. Did everyone remember
- 20:45to bring a button? She asked? Everyone had, Eveleen, how
- 20:51will your family celebrate Mother's Day? Asked Missus Maddoff. Now,
- 20:57the illustration here shows the teacher, Missus Matto, sitting in
- 21:02a chair, and all around her are the children. It
- 21:07looks like there's ten children sitting around her, and they
- 21:11all have their hands raised and they're showing her the
- 21:15special buttons that they have brought to class that day.
- 21:20Evelene and Nicholas are two of the children sitting right there.
- 21:26Continue My Madmal will be very happy, I said. My
- 21:31big brother will come home from college. He and Papa
- 21:36will make beignets and I'll roll them in powdered sugar.
- 21:42We won't let Mamal help because Sunday is her special day.
- 21:48The illustration here shows Evelene and her older brother who's
- 21:53in college, making something in the kitchen. It looks like
- 21:57it's going to be a pastry and these are called beignets.
- 22:02The older brother is rolling the dough out with a
- 22:06rolling pin and Eveline is dipping the fried dough into
- 22:11powdered sugar. Mom and I are hiking to the top
- 22:19of Chickasaw Mountain, said Jessica, just the two of us.
- 22:23She loves to hike, and so do I. I bought
- 22:27the kind of sweet, fat, black seedless grapes she loves
- 22:33for our picnic. The illustration here shows the young girl
- 22:38Jessica sitting on a blanket at the top of a high,
- 22:42high hill, and they're having their picnics and they're eating
- 22:46those delicious purple grapes. Continuing, Dad and I are going
- 22:54to give mom the birdhouse rebuilt. It has a tiny hole.
- 23:00Evan said. The hole is tiny so that only wrens
- 23:05can fly in or out. Wrens are the cutest birds
- 23:09in our yard. That's what mom says. The illustration here
- 23:15shows Evan and his mom in the backyard planting flowers
- 23:20around a beautifully blooming tree. Up in one of the
- 23:24branches is the small brown bird, and that's a wren.
- 23:32My mother died when I was a baby, Sarah said,
- 23:35Dad and I live with Grandma, who's his mother. She
- 23:40does everything for me that mothers do. On Mother's Day,
- 23:45Dad and I will take her to a restaurant that
- 23:49has the kind of food her mom cooked. The illustration
- 23:54here shows Sarah and her father and her grandmother sitting
- 23:59around a t in a beautiful restaurant. They're looking at
- 24:03the menus so they can decide what they want to
- 24:06order to eat. Continuing, Pablo said, last week, my father
- 24:15was bulldozing. Suddenly he saw a little dogwood tree. He
- 24:20stopped his bulldozer just in time. He dug it up,
- 24:25roots and all, and put it in our garage. On
- 24:29Mother's Day, we'll plant it in our yard. That little
- 24:33dogwood tree sure will make my mother happy. The illustration
- 24:39here shows Poblo and his father looking through a garage window,
- 24:45and they can see the dogwood tree. Inside the garage,
- 24:49the roots of the tree are wrapped in fabric called
- 24:52burlap to keep it moist. And inside the garage there's
- 24:56a shovel and a basketball, and some ice skates and
- 24:59other things. But that dog wood tree is what they're
- 25:03really looking at. Continuing, we're not doing anything for mamma
- 25:09on Mother's Day, said Charley. Instead, she is throwing a
- 25:14baby shower for her twin sister, Aunt Louisa. My aunt
- 25:19is going to have a baby. Then she'll be a
- 25:22mother to her baby like Mamma is to me. Dad said,
- 25:26Mamma sure is nice to share her special day with
- 25:30Aunt Louisa. Kate said, Daddy's been teaching me to play
- 25:36the violin. While Mammy's at work, I can play the
- 25:40piece I learned for you. Kate tucked the violin under
- 25:45her chin, picked up the bow and played. I practice
- 25:50my piece every day, she said, as soon as we've
- 25:54finished clapping, I want to play it perfectly. On Mother's Day,
- 26:00Michiko said, my mother is tired of only looking at
- 26:04pictures she draws, so my father and I decided the
- 26:09best gift we could give her was an all day
- 26:13trip to the biggest museum in the city. The illustration
- 26:18here shows Michiko and her mother and father inside a
- 26:22museum and they're looking at all the beautiful artifacts and
- 26:27artwork in the museum. On Mother's Day, we're going shopping
- 26:34at the mall for a new kitchen table. I took
- 26:39all the money out of my piggybag. Sam said, it
- 26:43will help us by my mother a new table with
- 26:46chairs to match. This illustration shows Sam and his mom
- 26:52and dad and a little baby who's in a backpack.
- 26:55On Dad's back writing an escalator. They're at the mall
- 26:59and they're going to a furniture store. Don't forget me,
- 27:04said Nicholas. You know I never would, said missus Madoff.
- 27:10My mom loves animals, but all we have is a goldfish.
- 27:16You know what. She's getting a puppy for Mother's Day.
- 27:20I picked him out. This shows a picture of Nicholas
- 27:25sitting in a room and there are five little brown
- 27:28puppies running around, but one of them has jumped up
- 27:32into Nicholas's lap and is giving his a kid giving
- 27:35him a kiss. Missus Madoff said it was time to
- 27:39make Mother's Day presents. A lady I never saw before
- 27:43came into our classroom. Boys and girls, said Missus Maddoff.
- 27:48Here's Annie, she's my mom. She's going to show us
- 27:52how to make paper flowers with our buttons. We started
- 27:57with a circle of construction paper. Next time, we cut
- 28:00petals from the tissue paper and glued them all around
- 28:03the circle. That made a flower. Then we glued our
- 28:07buttons in the center of ish each tissue paper flower.
- 28:11We cut out leaves and glued them to a fuzzy
- 28:14pipe cleaner. My pink and red rose with its shiny
- 28:19gold center, was the most beautiful thing in the world.
- 28:23That's what my mama said. She loved that rose and
- 28:28the beignets that I brought to her on Mother's Day.
- 28:36This concludes the Children's Story Hour for today. Please join
- 28:40us next time when we'll read more stories, stables and
- 28:43fairy tales. Thank you, for listening, and please stay tuned
- 28:47for continued programming on Radio I
