- 0:03Then spake, Jesus, again, unto them saying, I am the light of
- 0:07the world, he that followeth me. Shall not walk in darkness, but
- 0:12shall have the light of life. Hello, listeners.
- 0:16This is Nick from scripture Central.
- 0:18And today's podcast addresses, the question, how does John
- 0:21portray Jesus as the way of the temple throughout the Gospel of
- 0:29John, various images and symbols Point, both ancient and modern
- 0:33Christians to the temple significantly.
- 0:36John S Thompson has observed. That the ordering of these
- 0:39temple themes in John's gospel appear to outline a progressive
- 0:43path. Similar to the Chiral and ritual
- 0:46program of the Israelite Temple. This view can deepen our
- 0:49appreciation. For the idea that Jesus's
- 0:52Ministry signals the way for each of us to follow in order to
- 0:55return to the presence of the father, as John begins his
- 0:59gospel, he records. That Jesus was in the presence
- 1:02of the father in the beginning, according to Thompson early
- 1:05sources regarding the temple. Theology of the holy of holies
- 1:08equated with the creation, particularly the first day, when
- 1:12light came into the world. Consequently, the holy of holies
- 1:16can also represent the pre creation presence of God with
- 1:20his Heavenly hosts or Council. Such themes appear in the
- 1:23initial versus of John's gospel. However, Jesus did not remain in
- 1:28the presence of the father in the holy of holies as John
- 1:31records. The word was made flesh and
- 1:33dwelt Among Us. In other words, it could be
- 1:36understood that the sun descended from the presence of
- 1:39God, in the holy of holies and came out of the temple into the
- 1:43world. The following events of Christ's
- 1:46mortal Ministry appear to reflect his journey back to the
- 1:49holy of holies taking his disciples with him and opening
- 1:53the way for all of God's children to enter his presence
- 1:56again. In the temple Courtyard, prepare
- 2:00a Tory ordinances were performed allowing entrance to the temple
- 2:03itself. These ordinances focus on the
- 2:06Laver of water used by the priests or purification prior to
- 2:10entering the temple and the altar of sacrifice.
- 2:13We're on animals, flour, oil, salt, wine and other offerings
- 2:18were placed. The events in the first six
- 2:21chapters of John appear to focus on Courtyard related themes, as
- 2:26well as identify Jesus, as the new sacrifice of the temple.
- 2:30For example, in the Gospel of John, the ordinance of baptism,
- 2:33both Jesus own baptism and other baptisms that he and his
- 2:38disciples performed is mentioned only in the first four chapters
- 2:43at Cana Jesus performs. His first public Miracle by
- 2:47turning water. After the manner of Of the
- 2:49purifying of the Jews into wine as Thompson notes.
- 2:54This is the water customarily used by Jews to cleanse their
- 2:58hands and their feet before entering a house.
- 3:01Not unlike the purpose of the Laver in the temple.
- 3:03Courtyard additional references to Cleansing and healing by
- 3:08water are prominent in the early chapters of John.
- 3:11Jesus identifies the need for baptism a washing ordinance to
- 3:16enter the Kingdom of Heaven, which is represented by the
- 3:18temple. Act in John chapter 4, Jesus,
- 3:22identifies himself as a well of Living Waters, an image steeped
- 3:27in Temple tradition. Then in John chapter 5 Jesus
- 3:31heals a man at the pools of Bethesda a place, which may have
- 3:34been associated with purification of sacrificial,
- 3:37sheep for the temple due to its proximity to the house of God.
- 3:42But healing a man at these Waters, which were thought to
- 3:44have healing properties. Jesus further, identifies
- 3:47himself as the living Healing Waters of the Temple.
- 3:52Passover, a prominent Jewish Festival.
- 3:54That relates to the sacrifices at the temple.
- 3:56Altar is often noted by John as the background to these events
- 4:01of these initial chapters in John, Chapter 2, when Jesus
- 4:04cleanses the temple, it is Passover season.
- 4:08Jesus is noted as having the sacrifices removed before,
- 4:12speaking of the destruction of his own body, describing it as a
- 4:15temple as if to declare that he is the replacement or
- 4:19fulfillment of the temple sacrifices.
- 4:22The bread of life. Sermon recorded, in John.
- 4:24Chapter 6, also occurred during the Passover season.
- 4:28In this sermon Jesus, identifies himself.
- 4:30Not only as the manna that came down from heaven but also as the
- 4:34Paschal Lamb and the wine lamb Bread and Wine were offered
- 4:39daily at the temple altar in John chapter 7 through 10.
- 4:44John shifts from Passover to events of Jesus ministry that
- 4:48occurred during the festivals that focus on the temple itself.
- 4:52Emily. The Feast of Tabernacles, and
- 4:54the Feast of dedication thus drawing readers Minds to the
- 4:58holy place in the Ancient Temple.
- 5:01One of the prominent symbols employed in these chapters is
- 5:05the Divine Light emanating from God in the temple, symbolized by
- 5:09the menorah of the Holy place. This is, especially apparent
- 5:13during the Feast of Tabernacles, during which time candelabras
- 5:16were set up in the temple, Courtyard to extend the light of
- 5:19the menorah outward. It is during this Feast that
- 5:23Jesus, likewise declared. I am the light of the world he
- 5:28that followeth me. Shall not walk in darkness, but
- 5:31shall have the light of Life. The imagery of the light of the
- 5:35temple. Is also connected with the
- 5:36healing of a man. Born blind, Jesus heals this man
- 5:40by anointing his eyes with mud and directing him to wash in the
- 5:44pool of Siloam. According to Thompson the ritual
- 5:47manner in which the Blind Man's eyes are opened Echo ancient.
- 5:51All related rights of opening, the mouth and eyes of priests
- 5:55prophets, and others prior to their service in the temple or
- 5:59Ascent to Heaven, consequently, the eyes are prepared to receive
- 6:03more than natural light, rather. They are prepared to receive a
- 6:08higher divided light. Later at the Feast of
- 6:11dedication. Jesus likewise refers to his own
- 6:14anointing by the father, when challenged by the Pharisees
- 6:18Jesus stated say, ye of him, whom the father hath Sanctified
- 6:22and sent into the world, thou blaspheme us because I said, I
- 6:25am the Son of God. However, the Greek word
- 6:28translated in the King James version, as Sanctified in, this
- 6:32verse is used for those who are consecrated for important work
- 6:36or high office including priests by mentioning such Such an
- 6:40anointing Jesus would have likewise drawn his audiences
- 6:43mind to the temple. Jesus further indicated his
- 6:47special relationship with the temple in John chapters. 8 & 10
- 6:51in John, chapter 8, verse 35. Jesus declares that the servant
- 6:55abideth not in the house forever, but the son abideth
- 6:58ever. Jesus is declaration in the
- 7:01temple. Courtyard, would make sense in
- 7:03the context of the Feast of Tabernacles.
- 7:05We're in the Messiah. A Son of God is celebrated as
- 7:08the king in his Temple. All further in John, chapter 10,
- 7:12Jesus identifies himself as the Good Shepherd who is said to
- 7:16dwell between the cherubims. In Psalm 82:6 one a clear
- 7:22reference to the Lord's enthroned status in his Temple.
- 7:25It is only fitting then that the next portion of John's gospel
- 7:28involves preparations to enter the holy of holies to Behold The
- 7:32enthroned Shepherd of Israel. John ends his gospel with a
- 7:36focus on the resurrection and entering, again, the presence of
- 7:39God, while baptism may have been the prerequisite to enter the
- 7:43temple. Resurrection, can arguably be
- 7:45situated at the inner threshold or veil of the temple.
- 7:48Where one is Born Into the holy of holies Jesus.
- 7:52Not only teaches about his own impending death and Resurrection
- 7:56but also declares himself to be the resurrection and the life
- 8:01whereby, we can enter the presence of God.
- 8:04In John chapter 12, Jesus is Anointed by Mary of Bethany
- 8:07Preparatory for his death. Resurrection.
- 8:10This is shortly followed by his triumphal entry into Jerusalem,
- 8:14in which Jesus is said to come in the name of the Lord.
- 8:17And at which the father's voice declares that his name is
- 8:21glorified in these last events of Jesus's life, John Returns
- 8:25His readers to the Passover likewise after the events that
- 8:29took place on Mount Sinai the house of Israel began.
- 8:31Its final Journey to the promised land with With a second
- 8:35Passover repetition appears to be a Hallmark of many of Jesus
- 8:39teachings in these later chapters, as it is in the
- 8:41temple. But these later repetitions
- 8:43appear to be of a higher order. For example, during the last
- 8:47private moments, Jesus spent teaching his Apostles, he
- 8:51alludes to a previous washing. But again washes the feet of his
- 8:54disciples which ordinance he links to being able to follow
- 8:58him into the holy of holies. Finally, Jesus offers the great
- 9:04intercessory prayer in the which he declares that he has revealed
- 9:08the name of the father to his disciples and prays for them to
- 9:11be able to follow him into the presence of the father.
- 9:15Finally, the veil is parted as it were and the disciples at
- 9:19long last. See the resurrected Son of God.
- 9:23Jesus is resurrection is linked. Not only with his Ascent to the
- 9:26father's presence but also with the apostles entering the holy
- 9:29of holies and Hang out as high Priestly representatives of the
- 9:33father, and the son capable of remitting sins, quote, peace be
- 9:39unto you as my father. Hath sent me even, so send I,
- 9:44you who soever sins your met, they are remitted unto them.
- 9:49And who soever sins you retain they are retained and quote.
- 9:55Because Jesus is the way of the temple.
- 9:58His life offers the world to greatest example, for how to
- 10:02obtain life, eternal indeed, Jesus points, his disciples to
- 10:06his Temple, through all aspects of his life and Ministry.
- 10:11By following his example, we all can find ourselves once again on
- 10:15a path toward the presence of God, the father and his son.
- 10:18Jesus Christ. King Benjamin taught, the
- 10:21Nephites there shall be no other name given nor any other.
- 10:25A Noir means whereby salvation can come unto the children of
- 10:30men only in and through the name of Christ, the lord omnipotent,
- 10:35as faithful Sons. And Daughters of God follow
- 10:38Jesus example and make covenants with him in baptism in partaking
- 10:43of the sacrament. And in embracing the ordinances
- 10:46of the Holy Temple, they are able to take upon themselves,
- 10:50his sacred name permitting and enabling them to follow him in
- 10:54the Covenant path. Path toward our Heavenly home
- 10:57and partaking of all the blessings promised to his
- 11:00faithful disciples. Thank you for listening to this
