- 0:26Speaker 1: will have a new head coach list being paired down
- 0:29Speaker 1: a little bit, as in person interviews will take place
- 0:34Speaker 1: this week. We're expecting Aaron Glenn to be on that
- 0:37Speaker 1: list on Wednesday, and potentially Mike.
- 0:39Speaker 2: McCarthy as well.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Mike Kafka is at his in person interview, so we're
- 0:44Speaker 1: getting closer to finding out who is going to be
- 0:46Speaker 1: the next head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Kind
- 0:48Speaker 1: of knows what it's like going through that transition. Scott
- 0:50Speaker 1: Shanley good enough to jump aboard with us. Always great
- 0:52Speaker 1: insight when we talk about all things Saints. Scott, we
- 0:54Speaker 1: appreciate you, man.
- 0:54Speaker 2: How are you?
- 0:55Speaker 3: Damn'm doing good?
- 0:57Speaker 1: Uh? You know whenever you join the New Orleans Saints,
- 1:01Speaker 1: you know during that transition period, and it was it
- 1:03Speaker 1: was when camp had started. What kind of is is
- 1:08Speaker 1: that transition? Like with a new head coach, Like what
- 1:12Speaker 1: can the guys on this roster and the guys coming
- 1:14Speaker 1: in who are in losing expect with a new coach
- 1:18Speaker 1: coming in.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Well, it puts everybody on notice.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I think sometimes as a player, you know in this
- 1:26Speaker 4: business every day in an interview, you know, no guaranteed contracts.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Obviously guys signed more stigning bus money he's signed for
- 1:32Speaker 4: the you feel a little safer with job and performance.
- 1:35Speaker 4: But when a new head coach comes in, nobody's safe.
- 1:38Speaker 4: And you see, like what Sewan has done in Denver,
- 1:41Speaker 4: Sean brought in a bunch of people he's familiar with,
- 1:43Speaker 4: and that's.
- 1:44Speaker 3: That's a big thing.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Is a lot of coaches bring in people they trust.
- 1:47Speaker 4: And if you don't know anybody when you go in
- 1:50Speaker 4: that building, you don't have any ties anybody, no relationships.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Everything just comes down to trust factor. And I think
- 1:57Speaker 4: that's that's.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Why even Sewan as an example, why why.
- 2:00Speaker 4: He did what he did in New Orleans, why he's.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Doing what he did in Denver.
- 2:04Speaker 4: You don't want to You don't want to wait around
- 2:06Speaker 4: two three four years to find out who you can trust.
- 2:08Speaker 3: You want to do it right away. And so when when.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Change happens, it puts everybody's toes on the line. Everything
- 2:15Speaker 4: starts over. And uh, it's about performance based.
- 2:18Speaker 3: And and and uh, you know.
- 2:19Speaker 4: I think that's what makes our game great. But sometimes
- 2:22Speaker 4: guys get comfortable.
- 2:24Speaker 1: What's your feeling on Aaron Glenn, who's obviously there with
- 2:27Speaker 1: you in two thousand and eight. Uh, just do you
- 2:30Speaker 1: have a general feeling on Glenn as a player coach person?
- 2:34Speaker 3: Yeah? I know, I know Aaron.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Well, I go all the way back with you know,
- 2:37Speaker 4: Aaron played when I was a VULPHO.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yeah, so you know Bill brought him in at end
- 2:43Speaker 4: of Aaron's career. And here's, uh, this guy who's played
- 2:46Speaker 4: a ton of football. And never forget this about Aaron,
- 2:48Speaker 4: like this it's a little thing, it's a big thing.
- 2:49Speaker 4: He's at the end of his career, and yet every
- 2:53Speaker 4: day we're in the weight room, we're running gas ers.
- 2:55Speaker 3: This dude is killing people.
- 2:57Speaker 4: And Aaron has a tireless workout, and you know a
- 3:01Speaker 4: lot of people kind of look and they say, you know,
- 3:04Speaker 4: Aaron Glanne's a defensive guy. We just had a defensive
- 3:06Speaker 4: guy in Dennis, And you know, do we want to
- 3:09Speaker 4: go that route? And I understand that sentiment. Sometimes it's
- 3:11Speaker 4: fun to flip and go the other way. But I
- 3:14Speaker 4: think with Aaron personality wise, he's way different than Dennis.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I think I think Aaron's one of those guys because
- 3:21Speaker 4: he played, he went through the battles, much like Dan
- 3:23Speaker 4: Campbell in Detroit. I think he's a player coach who
- 3:27Speaker 4: guys are going to play hard for respect and listen
- 3:30Speaker 4: to every word that he says. And I think you're
- 3:33Speaker 4: seeing it now with these coaching cycles that that people
- 3:36Speaker 4: are looking for Dan Campbell type guys where players hang
- 3:39Speaker 4: on every word they say and a player wants to
- 3:41Speaker 4: know that a coach cares about him. Now, once you
- 3:43Speaker 4: get that, I'm a head coach and a player relationship,
- 3:46Speaker 4: the sky's a limit as far as the performance you're
- 3:48Speaker 4: game out of the player. And I think that's what
- 3:49Speaker 4: Aaron can bring out of guys.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Do you think there is you alluded to it.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And this one thing I've brought up Scott just as
- 3:55Speaker 1: a you know, just as an outside looking in point
- 3:58Speaker 1: of view, is the connection to the Sean Payton Dennis
- 4:02Speaker 1: Allen tenure because he was here as a player and
- 4:04Speaker 1: as a coach, and there's a feeling like of.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Let's start over completely. How do you separately?
- 4:10Speaker 1: What is your feeling on how closely related that that
- 4:14Speaker 1: hire might be if that ends up being the guy?
- 4:18Speaker 4: Yeah, Oh, I think I'm in the camp that I
- 4:21Speaker 4: don't necessarily think a clean sweep because you're you're not
- 4:26Speaker 4: starting over with the GM. You're not you're never getting
- 4:28Speaker 4: you're not getting a whole clean sweep. I understand as
- 4:32Speaker 4: a general manager, I put myself in Mickey's situation, and
- 4:35Speaker 4: I say to myself, why the hell would I erase
- 4:39Speaker 4: anything Sean Payton related from two thousand and six on.
- 4:42Speaker 4: It's the only thing we've had to be excited.
- 4:43Speaker 3: About if you cheer for the normal thing.
- 4:45Speaker 4: So I don't know if cleaning the slate completely is
- 4:50Speaker 4: the safest bet or the right thing to do, because
- 4:52Speaker 4: as a GM, you don't know what you're getting out
- 4:55Speaker 4: of a head coach until until.
- 4:57Speaker 3: It bursity flies.
- 4:58Speaker 4: You know, everybody I assume interview as well. That's why
- 5:00Speaker 4: they're in those positions. Some better than others. But you
- 5:03Speaker 4: had the advantage of seeing Aaron Glenn behind the scenes.
- 5:06Speaker 4: He watched him interact with players. You've seen how he
- 5:08Speaker 4: treats players after losses, how he interacts with guys in
- 5:11Speaker 4: certain situations. It's a huge advantage, and I think that's
- 5:15Speaker 4: why people hire people they're familiar with. Much like Joe
- 5:18Speaker 4: Brady's been in the building, Mike McCarthy obviously has relationships
- 5:21Speaker 4: with people there. So I think I'm more in the
- 5:24Speaker 4: camp that I understand when people hire people they're familiar with.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Scott Chanley's with his former Saints linebacker. Do you have
- 5:32Speaker 1: feeling a relationship one with McCarthy, because it certainly feels like, man,
- 5:36Speaker 1: it just look at betting odds or whatever. If Aaron
- 5:39Speaker 1: Glenn doesn't end up with the Jets, he's probably the
- 5:40Speaker 1: same number one. If that doesn't happen, it's probably McCarthy
- 5:43Speaker 1: number two.
- 5:43Speaker 4: You have a feeling on McCarthy, Yeah, So I think
- 5:48Speaker 4: for me, you know, don't underestimate how much Aaron Glenn
- 5:53Speaker 4: I think is interested in the Jets job that's home
- 5:55Speaker 4: to Aaron. You know, he was a coach with the
- 5:57Speaker 4: Saints in a lot of great years and cut his
- 5:59Speaker 4: teeth of the but he was drafted New York Jets,
- 6:02Speaker 4: played a ton of years there as a former player.
- 6:04Speaker 4: That's always fun to go in those situations. So I
- 6:07Speaker 4: think I think the Jets.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Have at obretty higher Aaron Glenn, I really do.
- 6:10Speaker 4: But for me, you know, my three guys that I
- 6:13Speaker 4: would really consider stronger probably Aaron Glenn and Joe Brady
- 6:17Speaker 4: and Mike McCarthy. I've always been a fan of Mike McCarthy.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I've said that all the way back to you know,
- 6:25Speaker 4: when he got the college job and Collie Stands are
- 6:26Speaker 4: coming down hard on him. You put Mike McCarthy's resume
- 6:29Speaker 4: down with Sean Payton's and Mike Tomlins, and two of those.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Three guys, everybody crazy.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Everybody says they're one of the best coaches in the
- 6:37Speaker 4: NFL and have been for the past fifteen years. And
- 6:39Speaker 4: then Mike McCarthy seems to get a lot of needs.
- 6:41Speaker 4: But guys won a Super Bowl, Guy's done a great
- 6:44Speaker 4: job of quarterbacks, He's won a ton of games. So
- 6:46Speaker 4: I think I don't want to say Mike's a safe fallback,
- 6:50Speaker 4: but almost kind of is, because he's he's a guy
- 6:53Speaker 4: who's done it and has won a lot of games.
- 6:56Speaker 1: It's fascinating to think what direction this may go. You
- 6:59Speaker 1: mentioned Joe Brady. I mean that was this isn't the
- 7:01Speaker 1: path I thought we were going to go in the
- 7:02Speaker 1: convo Scout, But I mean, I'm glad you're opening these doors.
- 7:06Speaker 2: What's what's the peal of of Joe Brady?
- 7:10Speaker 4: Yeah, well Joe, you know, I think everywhere Joe's been
- 7:14Speaker 4: outside of Carolina and who who has had a lot
- 7:17Speaker 4: of six under Matt Rule.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I'm not a big Matt Role fan. Joe.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Joe has been this guy who went and gave a
- 7:25Speaker 4: presentation to LSU football and Ed Odron said, wow, I
- 7:29Speaker 4: need that guy. My staff hired him and ended up
- 7:32Speaker 4: completely one of the greatest college football seasons in history
- 7:36Speaker 4: goes to Carolina. Struggled a little bit early in this season,
- 7:38Speaker 4: but I don't think it was fireable. You know, Matt
- 7:41Speaker 4: Rule fired him and then you see what he's doing
- 7:44Speaker 4: with the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen's always been a
- 7:47Speaker 4: great player, but to have an MVP type season, and
- 7:50Speaker 4: I think for Joe, you know, he's he hasn't really
- 7:53Speaker 4: been out there, so you don't know what his personality
- 7:55Speaker 4: is like, and that's a big thing. A lot of
- 7:56Speaker 4: guys can be great with x's and no's and call plays,
- 7:59Speaker 4: but you's gotta be a man. You have to develop
- 8:01Speaker 4: trust and relationships with players ages twenty one to thirty seven,
- 8:05Speaker 4: thirty six years old.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Those are tough things to do.
- 8:07Speaker 4: So I just think Joe has the possibility of being
- 8:11Speaker 4: one of those young, up and coming guys. Doesn't have
- 8:14Speaker 4: the same energy as miss Fay or maybe as Sean Payton,
- 8:16Speaker 4: but I think he's one of those guys that's has
- 8:18Speaker 4: a ton of success and that guys will respect right away.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Scott Chandler's with us for a couple more minutes. Of course,
- 8:26Speaker 1: you need coaching, Scott, But you can win without players.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I mean that's a very obvious statement. But the Saints
- 8:30Speaker 1: roster right now is old and expensive. How quickly, realistically
- 8:36Speaker 1: can they get this roster back to a point where
- 8:38Speaker 1: they can be competitive, to the one where they could
- 8:40Speaker 1: be a playoff team.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that's obviously the biggest question. When people
- 8:46Speaker 4: start ranking open jobs and wear the Saints fall and
- 8:48Speaker 4: every points for the salary cap situation and you.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Know quarterback situation.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Derek carlb be here for one more year and I
- 8:53Speaker 4: don't think anymore after that, So you don't have do
- 8:56Speaker 4: you have a quarterback waiting in the billion? Not necessarily
- 8:59Speaker 4: in my opinions, or played a lot that Spencer also
- 9:01Speaker 4: played with the offense that I don't think any NFL
- 9:04Speaker 4: team is gonna win games with the wide receivers and
- 9:06Speaker 4: the running back situation they had at the end of
- 9:08Speaker 4: the season. So Spencer got a ton of plays. Now
- 9:11Speaker 4: you're really evaluating them a lot in year two to
- 9:13Speaker 4: see if he can be a starting franchise quarterback. But
- 9:16Speaker 4: you know, the Caps, the quarterback situation, it's a huge detriment.
- 9:21Speaker 4: But I also know the Saints have good ownership. They
- 9:24Speaker 4: play in the division. You know the Raiders, they play
- 9:26Speaker 4: in the AFC West. Who wants to play in that division?
- 9:28Speaker 4: I mean, so they have advantages due to attracting head coaches.
- 9:33Speaker 4: But it's tough, like you said, aging players, Stalar Cap.
- 9:36Speaker 4: But here's here's my thing. The NFL you can flip.
- 9:39Speaker 3: You can flip it fast.
- 9:40Speaker 4: And the way you do that is you have a
- 9:42Speaker 4: two thousand and six draft, you have a twenty seventeen draft,
- 9:44Speaker 4: and they have to hit on this draft. If you
- 9:46Speaker 4: don't like anybody at nine. Trade back, get a bunch
- 9:48Speaker 4: of picks. That's how you're gonna flip this roster. And
- 9:51Speaker 4: you have to start drafting better than you have the
- 9:52Speaker 4: last couple of years.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Scott Chanley, former Saints linebacker, as a Nebraska guy, not
- 9:57Speaker 1: a fanom Matt Rule.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I'm not a big fan of I didn't like to hire.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Like I said, I.
- 10:04Speaker 4: You know, did he flip Temple, Yes, congrats.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Did he flip Baylor? Yes, congrats? Great.
- 10:09Speaker 4: So my big argument to the rask fans was great,
- 10:11Speaker 4: we're gonna be Temple, Temple and Baylor. I didn't likely
- 10:13Speaker 4: handle a lot of things Carolina. I knew too much
- 10:15Speaker 4: behind the scenes about the way when Carolina and I
- 10:17Speaker 4: was against that hire.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Maybe that's a great uh.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I mean Joe with Joe, that may be a great
- 10:25Speaker 1: notching the belt for Joe Brady if that with that
- 10:28Speaker 1: being the case, Scott, that maybe what did go wrong
- 10:30Speaker 1: in Carolina wasn't so much Joe Joe Brady. Maybe, as
- 10:32Speaker 1: you said, as Evan's by what we're seeing right now
- 10:34Speaker 1: in Buffalo with with.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Joe, that's more who Joe Brady is.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Joe.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Like I said, Joe Brady is the young guy who
- 10:41Speaker 4: went and gave a presentation and ended up getting off
- 10:43Speaker 4: as a coordinator job passing in coordinator for the LSU Tigers.
- 10:48Speaker 4: The outlier is the Carolina Panthers. He's had success everywhere
- 10:51Speaker 4: he's been and you know, if you look at Matt, Matt,
- 10:54Speaker 4: Matt's gonna point fingers and a heartbeat, and he's gonna
- 10:56Speaker 4: fire coaches. He already did Nebraska, he fired DC hired
- 11:00Speaker 4: Dana Holbert Stern at the end of this year after
- 11:02Speaker 4: he was around for the building for two weeks.
- 11:04Speaker 3: So you know, that's that's the outlier. But I think
- 11:06Speaker 3: Joe Brady is a hell of a coach.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Scott Schandley, you'll get him on Twitter x at Scott Schanley,
- 11:11Speaker 1: former Saints linebacker. Man, it's going to be interesting to
- 11:13Speaker 1: see where the Saints land and how quickly they might
- 11:15Speaker 1: be able to turn this thing around.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Scott. We always appreciate the time, man, Thank you.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, no problem,
