- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:11ahead across the city. I'm Carol. It's Tuesday,
- 0:16October 7th, 2025. Let's get you caught up. A
- 0:21medical helicopter crash brought Highway 50 to
- 0:24a standstill last night. And while the wreckage
- 0:27has been cleared and all lanes have since reopened,
- 0:29the investigation continues into what caused
- 0:32the crash in the heart of Sacramento. Just after
- 0:357 p .m., emergency crews responded to reports
- 0:39of an aircraft down in the eastbound lanes of
- 0:41Highway 50 near 43rd Street. When first responders
- 0:45arrived, they found the helicopter shattered
- 0:47across the roadway. Debris scattered in every
- 0:51direction and all lanes blocked. Authorities
- 0:55confirmed the aircraft was a medical helicopter
- 0:58carrying a pilot, flight nurse, and a paramedic.
- 1:01All three were critically injured in the crash
- 1:05and rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency
- 1:07treatment. Firefighters worked quickly to extricate
- 1:12the victims and clear debris. By late evening,
- 1:16Caltrans and CHP had successfully reopened the
- 1:19freeway, restoring traffic through the area.
- 1:23An FAA and NTSB investigation is now underway
- 1:27to determine the cause, whether it was mechanical
- 1:30failure, weather conditions, or other factors.
- 1:35For your commuters, if you're headed out this
- 1:37morning, eastbound lanes of Highway 50 are open,
- 1:40but there can be residual delays are possible
- 1:44as the cleanup crews continue to work along the
- 1:47median. Authorities urge drivers to stay alert.
- 1:51avoid distractions, and give room to any remaining
- 1:54investigators on scene. Looking ahead, officials
- 1:58are expected to release more details later today,
- 2:01including updates on the crew's condition and
- 2:04the mission they were on when the helicopter
- 2:06went down. In City Watch, statewide ballots have
- 2:11now been mailed out. If you have not received
- 2:13yours within the next seven days, you should
- 2:15contact your local elections office. Today's
- 2:20weather will have a high of 86. In traffic, there
- 2:25are currently a couple of incidents along westbound
- 2:28WX Freeway, also known as Highway 50 this morning,
- 2:31causing a significant backup. They do now have
- 2:34some of those lanes reopened, but it is slow
- 2:37going. In events, science lovers grab a pint
