[upbeat music] Bat, bat, bat, bat. [laughs] Da, da, da, da, da, da. Slow down. I don't have my document loader. Yeah, I know. I'm just- I know. [laughs] I'm just saying.
• 0:16
We walked into the studio- We're coming late to the party. [laughs] It's 7:0... We walked into the studio at 6:58. It's 7:03. Let's get this party started. And- It's Friday...
• 0:24
it apparently takes five minutes to get this shit show on the road. [laughs] Holy cra-camoly, what happened in the la... Hey, sorry we weren't here last week, folks. It was a Snowmageddon/- It, it really was.
• 0:39
It was- Well, considering that-... a shitstorm, man... mostly two-thirds of the s- staff here at Full Spectrum Cycling, by the way, that would be JK. Hello. What's with the beard thing, mustache?
• 0:51
You still have that long mustache-y thing on that side. Oh, yeah. I know. And also, uh, Tony, not supposed to be here, 'cause I'm not coming, 'cause I got too much shit to do at my house. Tony Berger, everybody.
• 1:02
Have I told you about my bathroom that the water is leaking down the wall? Thank you, James. Negatory. Right. Well- Good buddy... that was the most fun of last night's evening at the house I do not know how that worked.
• 1:12
Uh- Not gonna get into it right now. We're at the podcast. We're not gonna discuss. This is happy. You know, this is like Fantasy Island, smiles, everyone smiles. Smiles, smiles everyone. Yeah, yeah. Sort of Mr. Roarke.
• 1:21
Gotta be tattooed. Shm- shm- shmiggity, shmiggity, shmack. The plane. What? First of all- The plane... it's been so long since we've done this- That's right, boys...
• 1:27
I, I don't even know where to put my fucking m- the mic is in my face. My, my- Mic your fucking shit... Oh, no, wait, not that mic. This mic. Goddamn fucking shit, shit.
• 1:32
And by the way, in the last season of Fantasy Island, uh, Tattoo was a goner, and he was replaced by Mr. Belvedere. Irv- That's right. I remember that... Irv Belches. Yes. Not Mr. Belvedere. Why was he let go?
• 1:46
Yeah, it's like- He didn't pass. He, he- No, he had very, he had strong sexual proclivities. He liked to, like, really harass everyone. Oh, okay.
• 1:55
I think I- Did Tyrion Lannister do that too, or, or- Well, his character did. Yeah. Lovely Dinklage. Yeah. [laughs] All right. To be fair,
• 2:04
I did just finish watching German Turns another time, because it's one of my favorite things to have in the background- Sure. Oh, yeah... when I'm actually doing real work. Understood.
• 2:14
Although, every time I watch it again, I pick up something more. Mm-hmm. It is. It's a dense- I'm not saying it's top of the hill, but I am saying [can opening] we'll get to the top of the hill shortly.
• 2:27
I will, I will, I will bring this up right off the bat, though. This is another League of Heroes Revolution. Revolution. Uh, I had war, I had a War Pigs, which I might get next time- Ooh...
• 2:38
in my thing, but it was, like, some sort of fruity thing, something, something, something. And then there's this very tall guy came in and grabbed one of these, League of Heroes, uh, 12-packs, and
• 2:52
I couldn't reach the one that was behind it. [laughs] I'm like, "Oh, that looks really good." He goes, "Yeah, I'm not sure," anyway, "Not sure you're gonna like one of them."
• 2:59
I'm, but I'm like, "Can you grab the one back there?" And he stood up on the thing and reached in there and grabbed it. Nice. I was like, "Nice." Also- That's why, that's why you were ahead, sir. [laughs] Also,
• 3:10
he had a, uh, motorcycle jacket and helmet on, so he was, in our, whatever, almost 50-degree day, day, day today- Yeah. Gorgeous... he was riding his motorcliv- jickety out there.
• 3:24
And, uh, hey, we haven't even got through the introductions yet, everybody, but I'm gonna go ahead and push the button, 'cause, uh- Whoa... we got, hello, listener. Who do we have on the line?
• 3:39
Hey, I'd like to order a large pizza. Oh, yeah, yeah, Cranky Al's over at the, uh- Yeah. [laughs]... right next door. It's awesome. Oh, there were two slices out in the, uh, green room- [laughs]... actually.
• 3:49
I don't- Oh... I did notice that. [laughs] Oh, yeah, we, our, yeah, we- Hey, guys. This is, uh, this is Nathan Harrison calling in. Hey, Nathan. Uh, uh, we got- Wow...
• 3:58
y- you kinda got, uh, uh, pimped out by Shannon to say that, uh, we need to talk about something. [laughs] But, eh, it, it, let's just, uh, let's just let everybody know who Nathan is.
• 4:10
Nathan is a team member of Broken Spokes Kick Ass, uh, fat bike racing team, and, uh, maybe- Man Bear Pig... and, uh? Man Bear Pig. Man Bear Pig. Oh, that was George. [laughs] Yeah, it was George's nickname.
• 4:23
[laughs] Just give us a little- Yeah, it- Give us a little, uh- I kinda, I kinda do double duty with, uh, the Tread Heads and Broken Spoke.
• 4:32
Um, I've, I've been with Broken Spoke for a long time and, and I r- ended up training, most of my training I [laughs] because I'm down south and Broken Spoke is so far away, most of my training is with the Tread Heads.
• 4:45
So I've kinda split, um, some of my race time between both those teams actually. But, but I, I would say I'm a Broken Spoker. [laughs] So where, where is your normal, where, where do you live?
• 4:58
I, you're in the Lake Geneva area, or- Nope. So I'm actually west of Beloit, um- Ooh... kind of the Brodhead area out, out there in the, in the backwoods. That really is south. And, uh, yeah, it is.
• 5:15
We're, we're pretty close to the, to the border actually. That's what I was gonna say. [laughs] So we've got, we've got, actually got a bunch of land, and I've built, uh, a lot of cool trails over the ti- over my
• 5:28
last 10 years or so. I've been adding on trails and I've got a, a nice backyard fat bike series that we do on, on my trails that's getting pretty popular. Is that the Backyard Fat Bike Series? It is, yeah. [laughs] Nice.
• 5:44
So, yeah, that, uh, [laughs] that actually, so we started, um, we started quite a, quite a long time ago, um,
• 5:54
it, as kind of a joint junction with a few, few other guys and- I kind of joined in and wanted to try and make it a series, so I kind of spearheaded a little bit of that effort of, of making it into more of a series.
• 6:09
And we've had as many as four or five, um, races on the series, and some- sometimes we'd kind of repeat at different houses. So like mine, I would do, uh, one in the fall and then one in the winter on my, on my course.
• 6:24
And so we would, we would try and get in a bunch of races.
• 6:27
Now there's so many races out there in Wisconsin land that, uh, you know, the, the backyard series, we, we don't put together quite as many races as we did in the past, just, just 'cause there's so much stuff out there anymore.
• 6:43
Yeah, right on. But, uh, but I, I...
• 6:45
A lot of people still have a lot of fun doing my race and, um, so I, I've been doing the fall one kind of as a kickoff to the winter fat bike season, and it's been getting r- pretty popular.
• 6:55
We've been getting a lot of good racers come out and it's always a good time. Awesome. So- You guys are definitely gonna have to make an appearance there one of these days. Yeah. No, I think that-
• 7:05
I think- Well, I, I think that would be... That's kind of up our alley because, uh, we'll get into this in a little bit, uh, with the Wars, uh, thing.
• 7:12
But I think the s- the smaller, more, um, intimate events are awesome. And, uh- Yeah... you know, between Craig down in, just down in, just southy a little bit and, uh, you know, a few other people- Yep...
• 7:27
doing stuff- Yeah, Craig S-... that have the, that have the resource- Craig Smith. Yeah. Craig Smith. I'm sorry. Great. Yeah, Craig Smith was actually the one that, uh, he and I both were the, the ones that teamed up.
• 7:36
He started it really. You started it? And I kind of joined in on year, year two or three, I guess, for him. And, uh, and kind of took the ball and- Is that-... and kind of we- Is that-... we both ran with it... Craig P.
• 7:47
Smith? Craig. Craig Smith. Great Craig. Craig Craig. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. Craig Smith. Do you know the- Great Craig... do you know the guys at Hirsch Farms in Platteville too? Um, I, I can't say I do, no.
• 8:01
Well, they're, they're, I think they're similar to you. They got a good chunk of land and, you know, Platteville is part of the Driftless region, and so they have some elevation there.
• 8:09
And they have some, [laughs] some trails on their property that would make you cry because they go up and down so much, and then your legs cry, and then- [laughs]...
• 8:18
you laugh so much when you're going down the hill and your eye, and your eyes tear up so much, so you're pretty much crying the whole thing.
• 8:27
[laughs] Well, this, this race in my backyard, um, has, it's got quite a bit evolu- ev- elevation, sorry.
• 8:34
But, uh, one of the things that makes it a little bit unique is I've got a whole lot of, uh, features that I've been building every year, kind of ev- I'd add a little bit more every year.
• 8:45
And we've got some, some pretty fun jumps and, and berms and wooden features to ride and, um, it makes it a little more unique. Yeah. That's, that's great. I, w- we certainly...
• 8:57
I, it was on my radar this year and, uh, I just, uh, I've been slacking. I gotta be honest. I've been slacking on the riding.
• 9:04
[laughs] But, uh, I, it's good to hear that there's still fat bikers out there doing fat bike stuff, and even if they have to do it on their own property, even though apparently they can't do it in the Wars series anymore.
• 9:17
Yeah. What the hell's up with that? This is, this is actually- Yeah. This is actually- Shannon sent that out. Like, fuck that...
• 9:19
yeah, Shannon sent a thing about how the Wars series is dumping, you know, because- Fat bikes... because Trek bought 'em, right? Right. So last year...
• 9:29
So I've been doing the, uh, the Wars series for a lot of years, and I started doing the fat bike series the first year they added it, um, at, in Wars, um, which was I believe like 2015 when they first added the, the fat bike category.
• 9:45
So, you know, fat bikes started getting pretty mainstream like 2012, 2013, and so people started doing a lot of winter racing and they started getting the lightweight carbon bikes.
• 9:57
And actually, fun fact, um, the first carbon fat bike I rode, I called into Fat Bike Radio and you guys had a free demo or free carbon, uh, Borealis fat bike that you could ride at the Birkie and a free entry, and I called in and won it, and that was pretty awesome.
• 10:20
That was the first time I'd ever been on a, a lightweight, full carbon fat bike like that, and I rode it at the Birkie that, that year. That was- I don't remember what year that was... pretty cool. Maybe '20.
• 10:30
Hey, d- that, so two- That was cool... two, two-thirds of the team here was actually on that show. Jake. Yeah. [laughs] Jake. Oh. Now we have the usurper Tony. So that's- The usurper Tony is in the studio...
• 10:40
so that's pretty cool. Yeah. [laughs] Right on.
• 10:42
But, but I think, you know, whe- when, uh, when the bikes really got light and racey, I think that's really where people started using 'em more year-round as just, you know, amazing race machines.
• 10:56
And, um, so I think Wars adopted the fat bike category like 2015 or something like that. And so they've been h- running it ever since.
• 11:04
So ne- last year when Trek bought it, um, you know, we were expecting them to continue just as things were, 'cause it had been a popular category really.
• 11:15
Um, they'd, you know, morphed it from a sport category to a comp category to, uh, an open class category the last few years, where they were getting racers that, you know, were coming from expert to comp to sport and kind of blending 'em all ages and everything together, which you wouldn't think it would work, but I, I think everybody had fun and, you know, it, it, it worked.
• 11:40
Um, but they, they didn't have the fat bike last year and, you know, to my best, you know, pleas and, and attempts at trying to get them to add it back in, they, they didn't.
• 11:53
So he did say last year that, uh, he was not opposed to adding it back in, that it wasn't a for sure thing. So this year I was-... expecting to see him add it back in, and they didn't.
• 12:06
They updated the announcements in all the categories and they took single speed away, they took fat bike away, and they added in a new kind of a time slot for the women where they would race all by themselves. Um,
• 12:23
and so that was kind of the, the main addition that they did. So, uh, my post reaction was kind of disbelief that they, they really didn't, um, bring it back into the fold, I guess.
• 12:37
So I, I talked with Terry Gonzales, I talked with some other of the race directors and was just trying to figure out if they, if they had discussed bringing it back or had any communication.
• 12:50
And to, you know, to the people that I had talked to, nobody really had gotten any clear word from them on, um, on bringing it back. So what I did was I started a email campaign where I just kind of
• 13:06
hit all my bike race teams, all of my groups in Facebook and as many groups as I could, and just started trying to get as many people as I could to flood Marcus's, uh, the, the race director for, for Trek- Right...
• 13:20
Marcus flood his, uh, his email box basically to try and petition them to get it back into the series.
• 13:28
And so it's been almost, like, two weeks now that, you know, that I started the campaign, and I just heard from Marcus yesterday. Um, I think it was yesterday.
• 13:41
Basically he, he replied back to me, um, 'cause from my email that I had sent in to him saying that they were, they, they heard from the people and they are gonna do their best to add back in the fat bike category this year.
• 13:56
And I, I think they're even gonna add the single speed back in, too. So it, it's not a- Ooh... I think it's somewhat official. Right... somewhat official, I guess. I haven't, I haven't seen it on their website yet.
• 14:08
I haven't seen it, um, in the category, so it's nothing you can select yet. But I don't know.
• 14:14
I'm, I'm hoping that, uh, I'm hoping that he follows through and, and adds it back in and, and, um, I hope everybody does their best to turn out and, and race in those categories. Absolutely.
• 14:27
So I'm not a rabble-rouser normally. Yeah, you are. [laughs] But my... So the, so Shannon sent me, I think it was probably your, your, uh, email that you wanted people to send around. Yep.
• 14:39
And I thought to myself- Yeah... "Well, Trek bought it. Mm, they make fat bikes, or they did." Yeah. Why wouldn't they keep- Wait a second. Oh. Here's my point here. B- b- b- b- They did make fat bikes.
• 14:51
[laughs] And I was wondering if they were just gonna stop making them and just sell the rest of whatever they had in stock after the pandemic and this and that.
• 14:58
And they, they had a bunch of fat bikes, but are they gonna keep doing fat bikes?
• 15:02
And I thought, "Well, if they're not gonna support the series, then are they actually going to continue to make fat bikes for people that like fat bikes?" And then- If not, Baracls... uh, or is it just gonna go back to
• 15:16
it's a fad. No, wait. It's a niche. Oh, wait. Um, are we just- [laughs]... gonna be back to, like, Surly and Framed and, and, and the people who are still supporting the fat bike people?
• 15:25
So I, I reached out to a lot of people and asked them the question, "Is Trek discontinuing, like Specialized has, like several other companies have when they jumped on the train and then they jumped off the train because they're namby-pambies, is Trek going to discontinue making fat bikes?"
• 15:45
And I don't know the answer to that, but I would like to know that, and I don't know if you have any insight. But it- So- Seriously...
• 15:52
well, so my, I guess my, my conversation last year with Trek, um, or with Marcus, I guess, a couple other people there, was that the fat bike division for them... I mean, Trek is a huge company, right? Of course.
• 16:07
They- Yeah... they sell a ton of bikes. Of course. Yeah. Whatever. But, but, but- Get yourself home... but they- Well... they don't sell a whole lot of fat bikes. So that fat bike- No...
• 16:16
division for them was- But that's not really, that's not really the point... yeah. No, but I, I agree, but bas- they were basically kind of, when I was trying to talk about how popular fat bikes were, they were like,
• 16:28
"Yeah, not so much for us, you know, but I get it." You know, they're a very small player in the fat bike marketplace. Right. Right. There's, there's some big players. I mean- Yeah...
• 16:38
fat bikes are so big, but Trek not so much in, in that, in that, uh, genre, I guess. So- Right. Right... I've been... You know, and I can understand that from that standpoint.
• 16:49
But it is still a bike that they, they do sell, and they, and they actually have an awesome... Their, their Trek Farley 9 is, it's an awesome bike. Yeah. It's a great race bike.
• 16:59
They, they, they've always made- I have a few friends that race on them. It's light and, uh- Pretty much everything they make is, is decent... their race geometry... for sure. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. They...
• 17:08
And they, you know, they have some nice components, too, like the, the Wampa, Bontrager Wampa stuff. Their, their, uh, Hodag tires, their Gnarwhals.
• 17:18
I mean, they've got a lot of reasons why they should really wanna celebrate, you know, what they've offered in the fat bike marketplace.
• 17:26
So I, I, I tried to reach out to Marcus this year w- in my email just, you know, telling them basically that, you know, "Hey, you guys have a lot to celebrate, you know, with the fat bike, uh, you know, scene that you're a part of [laughs] and, uh, you should embrace all of the winter fat bikers."
• 17:44
'Cause if you really look at, you know, like even Huge Ass this year, it, it exploded, um, a lot more so than in years past. Uh, they had some races with over 300 racers and- Whoa...
• 17:56
you know, those are all potential, those are all potential, um, Wars racers, right? And I know a lot of people, fat bikes are their only-... only mountain bike. You know, that's their only, uh...
• 18:08
They're, they're either a road biker or they have a fat bike and, you know. So if, if you open up that, that WARs fat bike, um, I guess class- I-...
• 18:19
you know, you, you don't know who you're gonna open it up to, really That's, that's- Yeah... really interesting, that there are people that have road bikes, no mountain bikes, and a fat bike.
• 18:28
Yeah, 'cause- And that, that never even dawned on me- Well, uh-... but it totally makes sense. I mean, unless you're racing fat bikes, I don't know why you wouldn't have...
• 18:35
In fact, I think that it was maybe even in the, in your, in, in Nathan's thing, that sometimes the fastest laps are on fat bikes, not mountain bikes- Yeah... in the WAR series. Mm-hmm.
• 18:47
I really- Um- It, I think it depends on the course, you know, but fat bikes, they, they definitely have an advantage.
• 18:55
Um, you know, the twistier courses, you know, fat bikes have great traction, and you can really lay off the brakes and, and let 'em rip. Oh, wow. And, and fat bikes also climb really well.
• 19:08
You know, they, they, they may be, depending on... My fat bike, I, you know, I've got Berd spokes and carbon wheels and all the, all the [laughs] lightweight bits. So I mean, I think my fat bike weighs under 24 pounds.
• 19:21
So, you know- Yeah. Well, that's, I mean, that- I don't have- But- I don't, I don't have another, another mountain bike that's as light as it, really. So, you know, it's, there's no downside to racing the fat bike.
• 19:32
Um, but it, I do believe it's, it's worthy of its own class. Yeah. You know, the fat bike class, you know? So is Ma- is Marcus a Trek employee now, or is he still a... I, I mean, how does that work?
• 19:47
I, I'm not sure if I've ever asked him how that works. Yeah. I guess my, my thought is that he is an employee, uh, that he works for Trek. Well, I ge- yeah, I guess if they bought it or whatever. But here's the deal.
• 19:58
I mean, we are gonna put Marcus' um, email in... In fact, I might, I think I'll, in the show notes, I'll just put your, your whole thing that we saw, uh, through Shannon in our show notes.
• 20:12
So if people wanna tickle his ear, uh, go ahead and tell him that you like fat bikes and you want that to be a WARs class still. Um, I do think that we're in the best place in the world for fat biking and, and,
• 20:29
uh, as many p- Top five... as many places as I've been around the country and thought, "Golly, this is a great-ass place to ride a fat bike"- Wisconsin's there... you don't see any fat bikes. Outer Banks.
• 20:39
[laughs] California coast. I mean, everywhere. And I, I'm in Monterey going, "Where are the fat bikes on 400 feet from the water to the bluff of beach?" Oh, shit. Yeah, yeah. Where are the fat bikes? Right.
• 20:52
Why aren't they everywhere? I'm like, you guys- Yeah, right... you guys are missing out. Get the fuck... Okay. Costa Rica. Well, maybe they have more stuff to do- Yeah... like, uh, not ride bikes maybe or, I don't know.
• 21:00
Yeah. Well, uh- 'Cause I r- I rode, I was riding on, in Virginia Beach or Sandbridge Beach and it was just brilliant. I mean, nobody n- was expecting you to, nobody expects the bicycle on...
• 21:12
This, but it was b- beautiful. It was beautiful to do that. Yeah. I thought it- You just had to look out for the people that were actually fishing. [laughs] I, I do [laughs]
• 21:20
I do, I do think, you know, my, like my experience with fat bikes in the sand, it's a lot like snow, you know? Mm-hmm. There's, there's tires that work, that work well and pressure that works well. Yep. Yeah. You know?
• 21:31
You dial it right in. In sand and, and, uh, yeah, s- it's definitely a s- a big scene.
• 21:38
You know, the Midwest, like you said, it's, it's a, we're, we, we have it all, and I think that, you know, the snow, the, kinda because we're on that edge of snow and, uh, not, no snow, I think that's also another perfect area for fat bikes where, you know, it's, you can't really ride your, your road bike or your gravel bike, but you can get out on your fat bike and, you know- Yes...
• 22:03
shoulder those, those tr- those seasons really well, and I, I don't know. That, I think the scene in general, the, the winter scene for fat bikes is just, it's something special.
• 22:15
I really love all the, all the races and events that we have around now with, with the fat bikes. It's amazing seeing how far it's come back from the early days. It's crazy. All right. So here's a question.
• 22:28
Did, do you, you did the Snow Crown series, right? No. I, um, [laughs] I, because I am down, you know, Southern Wisconsin, I do most of the Huge Ass series. But I do do, um, some of the races.
• 22:44
Like I'll come up and do the, the Sweaty Yeti, um, the Snow Bully. Um, I'll do the Birkie, and I'll, I've done, I've done some of the Snow Crown ones, but I didn't do any this year.
• 22:59
Well, what I was disappointed to see was the US Fat Bike Open up, was just, there was no, the, there, the venue had no snow, and this is nor- way north of us in Green Bay. And- Which they should have...
• 23:12
they actually had to do the race on golf cart paths on paved... Which I'm sure the people racing still had a good time, 'cause you're- Right... you're still racing. But still.
• 23:21
But s- That's not what you came to- Ah, so sad... do [laughs] Oh, FYI. Where the fu- You know, yeah. Oh, where's the thing? Yeah. Wait. FYI, [bell rings]
• 23:31
if you've listened to the show before, Nathan, you know what this means. It means- We've at the top of the hill... we're at the top of the hill and we're gonna talk about the beer we're drinking right now.
• 23:38
I'm not sure if you're drinking beer, but we are. Mm-hmm. Are you drinking a beer? Me, right now, actually I'm, uh, over with my grandkids, so I'm not drinking a beer at the moment.
• 23:48
So I- But when I get home, I- Good golly... I will be- That means you're on the liquor... I will be drinking a beer Wait a second. Let me ask you this. You hate your grandkids enough to talk to us on this stupid show?
• 23:56
Oh, my God, Nathan. [laughs] You're, you're, you're, you're one of our favorite people- Oh, wait... ever to call in now. And, and Nathan, you- Oh, Grandbu- Grandbub's teeth being cleaned.
• 24:04
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait Just a little bit of the whiskey from here will just dumb that up. [laughs] Nathan, you sound younger than me, and I have a toddler. Yeah. [laughs] [coughs] So how old are you?
• 24:15
But you can't, you can't ask a girl that Next year I am gonna be 55 this year. 55 this year. Dude, I have a three-year-old and I'm 55. I- [laughs] And you have grandkids? [laughs] Woo. I have six grandkids.
• 24:25
You are legendary Legend- [laughs]... dary. Dary. Actually, I look like Santa, if you guys- [laughs]... have ever met me in the winter.
• 24:34
Picture for the show notes About, about mid- mid November- Yes, uh, text us a picture... I, uh, I usually let my, my beard grow All right. So just, just, just- And, uh-...
• 24:43
to stick with the, the show, even though, uh, you're an awesome- Yeah... guest, we do have to bust out Revolution Brewing because this is another one that they have these Heroes, uh, 12 packs, and there's like
• 24:58
three of each beer in it, and this is one we've never had, I don't think. Jukebox Hero. Have we had this before? No, I don't think so. No. It's a Black India IPA. Oldie, maybe. 7.5% ABV. A power chord of amped up hops.
• 25:12
And I'm gonna just slug it right now and see how it tastes. I, I did, I did a little, like a little splash- Whoa... and I can see- Uh, so, but-... the darkness... it's also bl- it is dark.
• 25:20
Hel- yeah, see, I put it like this. Revolution in Madison? No, Revolution from Chicago. Oh, wow, that's red. Chicago. [laughs] Oh, it is... Wait a minute, it is.
• 25:28
[laughs] They're, they're a very fun brewery- It is good... if you haven't been there. It's got- Dark... it's got sort of a little burnt taste, which I really, really like. But, but you're in southeastern Wisconsin.
• 25:38
Where are you? It's not by Foot- are you by Footville? Is there anywhere Footville anywhere- Southwest... near you? Oh, you're southwest. Okay, okay. Not- So you're by the hills... not by Cuba- Southwest, yeah...
• 25:48
Cuba City or... I remember trying to- Yeah, yeah, actually pretty close... I, I remember trying to- I'd, I'd s- New Glarus?... trying to find a, a bar in that area- New Glarus...
• 25:56
and totally ended up Ill- at one point we, we, like, "Oh, you're entering Illinois." I'm like- Yeah... "Fuck" No, there's some- Wrong way. Motherf- The, the only- You're like, "No, we're not supposed to be in Wisconsin."
• 26:05
New Glarus, I'm, I'm not far from New Glarus Brewery. That's, that's Oh. Oh, wow. You're- Yeah... so you're ways away from Latrobe. The only place worthy- Yeah, well-... of going to Illinois is- Oh, wait.
• 26:15
That's not right... in the far northwestern corner. Anything near Galena, not bad, but... So yeah, Cuba City, a bunch of dope growing hippie chicks are there. Yeah, awesome. But Grumpy Troll is what I was trying to say.
• 26:26
I kept saying Latrobe. That's New Glarus, isn't it? Yeah. No, Grumpy Troll- That's, uh, Mount Horrible... is up, up the road. He's near New Glarus. Oh, Mount Horrible. Mount Horrible. Right on. All right, Nathan.
• 26:36
[laughs] Well, I, I... Gosh, it was am- I'm glad you were on the show, 'cause we actually didn't have anything- Yeah... to talk about today, so thank God you called in. Yeah, well, yeah.
• 26:43
We always have nothing to something. We always have- I'm up for it. I wa- okay, let me leave us, let me leave our listeners with a couple quick things. Sweaty Yeti is this weekend. You probably already are going- Yep...
• 26:53
or you're not going. Uh- Yep, yep... but that is, like, tomorrow- Yeah, we going... in, in internet time.
• 26:58
So go ahead and go up there, 'cause who doesn't love riding Levis, 'cause it's one of the greatest places in the world. Uh, and also- Man, man, ton of, ton of snow right now, so- Yeah...
• 27:08
I'm hoping for really good conditions. Yeah, absolutely. Fu- fuck, fuck snow, and don't... Okay, okay. Well, here's another thing. If I could see fuck snow, I'd go. No, no, no. No, I know snow.
• 27:17
But wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait. No, wait. Okay, okay. Yeah. Okay, okay. All right. Uh, they always frig you at the drive-thru. I'm just saying. But, um, here's the deal.
• 27:25
Who- people who have fat bikes who love to ride on sand, the lake- Ooh, ooh, ooh... only had 6.7% ice cover this year, which means it's evaporating like a mofo. It's gonna be great beach riding.
• 27:41
Bro, we should have awesome beach riding. Uh, if we can get back to the glory days of 2012, where we could ride from Port to Sheboygan, 26 miles all on the beach, I am stoked. I'll take half that and still be stoked.
• 27:56
Yeah. We, uh, it is gonna be great.
• 27:58
It, and for the last year and a half, it has been, um, draining somewhat or evaporating, and I cannot wait till we can actually have a good beach ride again, so- I just don't wanna fall in- Nathan, come- I don't wanna fall in the trough right now.
• 28:11
Well, we may- I, I have a shout-out. I have a shout-out I need to make for the, uh, for the sand. So my favorite sand tire ever, I, I tried out a tire once that is kind of a non-known tire.
• 28:25
It's, it's a company called CS- CST. Yeah, the- Yeah, we love them... Cheng Shin tire.
• 28:31
By the way- And they, they make, they make a roly poly tire that I tried on my bike a long time ago, and I was doing a whole bunch of sand riding at the time, and that tire was amazing.
• 28:46
It was the best sand tire I have ever... I mean, any other tire- I have not seen that tire... I have tried has, doesn't compare to it. Well, here's a- Do- Here's an interesting thing about CST.
• 28:55
They make Maxxis tires, so that would give you a clue- Oh... as to how they can actually make a decent tire. You- They're not Vee Tire, but- Well, but- No, they suck, but- No...
• 29:04
you have to try- Yeah, they, they're inexpensive, so I wasn't expecting, uh, really good performance- Yeah, they are... from the tire itself was- You're right. They're- They are- Bang for the buck is really good...
• 29:12
it was really inexpensive. To- I highly recommend you try the Toboggan, the studded fat tire. Tony has studded Toboggan. They are unbelievably nice. And for- They are so, so nice...
• 29:23
I think for a studded four-inch 26x4, they're like 85 bucks maybe. Yeah, and they roll- They're ver- and they roll- You can inflate them to 25- I-... and they ride like a road bike.
• 29:34
I swear to God, I cannot think of a crappier tire than any Vee tire that was- It's-... ever made in a fat bike tire. They're gonna be starting- [laughs] They just roll so poorly.
• 29:43
Now, maybe not on, uh, sand or off-terrain, but on the road they just- They have no coast... gruesome. As soon as you stop pedaling, they stop. And I was ready for that with the CST, and I'm like- No, they're-...
• 29:56
"Oh- Uh, actually they roll really well. I was super stoked. That was, I mean, yeah. So the Rolly Polly is not something I've run ac- No... I will have to research this after the show.
• 30:08
Like, like 20 years ago- Thank you for nothing... I had CST road tires that rode- Yeah, but yes... so well I couldn't believe it. So under another brand, they make Maxis, which is a very good tire- Look for them...
• 30:18
for most purposes. Polly road. Right, yeah. So, yeah. I've had a handful of those. Shit, Nathan. Well, thank God you saved the show.
• 30:23
I figured out what the no- uh, I figured out what the pr- uh, the, uh, uh, rehearsaling of the- Rehearsaling. Oh, there's some sort of band playing next door. There is.
• 30:31
Uh, Riverwest Bluegrass Boomerang number 12- Next, next Wednesday... presented by Lakefront Brewery. Next Wednesday at the Gig? Yep. Holy shit. Yeah. That's a very intimate venue. Yeah. I'd, I'll go there.
• 30:43
Yeah, it's a bunch of the, from the Chickenwire- Oh... Empire and Mild Bill. Yeah, you definitely stay the, stay the course. Yeah. And obviously, obvi- okay. So obviously- Good old grassing...
• 30:51
obviously the band practicing across the hall doesn't know that they're supposed to be- Yeah... fucking dark when we do our super important podcast. [laughs] I'm just trying to talk you down there, Sven.
• 31:01
[laughs] I'm trying to talk you down. It's a gonna, it's all in the better scheme of ya. All right, Nathan. Namaste. Thank you very much. And if you want, do you want, do you wanna leave us with anything?
• 31:10
I mean, we're gonna have, uh, the, the, the contents of- And yeah, just, you know, anybody, anybody that is, um, that's really considering doing the wars and, and wants to look into doing that fat bike category, I really encourage you to support that if they do add that back in, just to kinda show them some love for, for adding it back in.
• 31:29
Right. Um, otherwise, uh, this next fall, um, hopefully I'll call in and, and, uh, get you guys hooked up with my backyard fat bike series again, and- Nice. Um, otherwise I'll see all you guys out at, uh, the Berkey.
• 31:42
You guys gonna be at the Berkey? Uh, not this year. Not this year. Maybe next. I, I'm gonna, okay, I'm gonna blame Schlabowski on this. He already rented out his place, so I can't go up there and- Fiend. Oh...
• 31:51
whore the joi- joint out for free. So I'm glad he's making money on the Airbnb. [laughs] And if you guys don't know Dave Schlabowski, and you don't know where he is up there in, uh, Cable, Wisconsin- It's gorgeous...
• 32:03
please check it out. Seely. It is so badass. Seely. Seely. Same thing. Ooh. See you, Dave. Come on now. But fuck, it's fuck, it's the same, fuck, it's whatever. It's a brand thing. Okay. All right. Nathan, thank you.
• 32:15
[laughs] Uh, you're welcome anytime. You don't have- Later, guys... you don't have to wait until next year. Yeah, call anytime. Bye. All right, thanks. That killed the whole show. It was fantastic. No, that was great.
• 32:26
We didn't have- Was that, you, man? Okay, we didn't have that much to talk about at all. Okay, one thing though. Oh, oh. Okay. No, no. Is that Pizza Man is moving- Oh. Fuck that.
• 32:36
Goddammit, they're moving to my neighborhood... to Stubbies, which I don't like them anyway. They're moving to my neighborhood. I hate their pizza. I know, I know, I just knew he was gonna fuck that up. Okay. To be fair.
• 32:44
To be fair. To be fair. I can't, I... [sighs] You're getting very technical if you call that your neighborhood. I don't even know- Oh, yeah... what that fucking- No, first of all... that parcel of land would be called.
• 32:58
It's fucking... Excuse me. It is a good point. You're, you are making a good point. It's north, it's north of the river. [laughs] It's not River West. It's River East, east side. It is still west of the river. Sure.
• 33:06
Is it, though? Yes. Yeah. It's not west of the river. No, no, I would, no, I'll follow- Jesus fucking Christ... it is clearly west of the river... I'll follow his logic on that. Oh.
• 33:13
But- But it is not River West because it is the other side of North. I mean, would you consider that condo row on Commerce River West? They do, though. No. No, I would not. They consider Lakefront Brewery River West.
• 33:23
Personally, I would not. I don't. I'll consider... I don't. Why do you consider Lakefront Brewery River West? 'Cause they were there first. [laughs] I, I agree with that. [laughs] Um, but- There is some-...
• 33:33
that is technically not River West, whatever you, wherever you wanna divide the lines. Sure. But- It's kind of a dumb name... I'm sorry, Pizza Man, fuck you. Yeah. I'm on that plan too.
• 33:44
Also- I, I- Here's a, here's a plan I am on board with... I'm not gonna- They should've moved into the old Chancery on Downer. Right. That's initially. They should've never- Initially.
• 33:51
Even now- Rather than rehabbing their building... for fuck's sake, there's still nothing in there. First of all, why- It's still just licks...
• 33:55
why didn't they just take their insurance money and call it a day, 'cause- 'Cause they coulda... bye. Well- Well, they make that shitty Bloody Mary mix too. Mike, uh- Ugh...
• 34:05
Mike did pass away, so there's a whole different- Copy that... ownership thing- All right, here's something to note-... running the thing, so... that I would like to say- I will say that...
• 34:12
will be in the show notes is, uh, there's a new Daikaiju album already- Attack... available on Bandcamp. It's called Phase III, which will be part of their- Upcoming tour... tour when we see them on 4/20- Yo...
• 34:26
at X-Ray Arcade. But I listened to the, well- In Kutahay, it's been, uh, with a K... the one track they had as a teaser, I haven't gotten the album yet, but it's out now, was not...
• 34:39
See, I al- they always sound different- Live... when they're in a recorded thing and when they're live. Oh, yeah. So I'm curious how this is, because this is, this is good. I wanna sa- I wanna hear. Oh, I get ya.
• 34:52
[laughs] Yeah. I've got, I've got two of their CDs, and it's- Apparently they make- It's a completely, it's a marked difference between live and listening... copy that.
• 35:01
I mean- I've also fucked up and said I thought they were from Slidell, but they're from Huntsville, Alabama. Oh. Still down south, y'all. Mm-hmm. And where the meth is clean and the, eh, whatever.
• 35:15
There should be something after that, but I don't know what it is. Also- The pigs never are lean... hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, what I gotta say, hey, hey, is that thank you, Nathan, for saving the show. And actually,
• 35:26
oh, for fuck's sake. I'm gonna push the button again. Hello, radio listener. Who do we have on the line? Hello? No one. No one, apparently. Copy. Copy.
• 35:41
Uh, breaker 1-9, breaker 1-9, we, we got the duck. Big sexy. Is that Dave Lunz talking about his, uh- It's not, it's not Dave Lunz... his, uh, bike's birthday ride for next- Saturday, if he's- Right...
• 35:59
gonna have one. I'm gonna just do this- Uh-huh, uh-huh... 'cause this is, it, it- Uh-huh. You know what? It's only s- it's fine. Don't, don't take that off, Tony. Are you? Don't take that off. But my ears are sweating.
• 36:08
Yeah, don't take that off. I'm hot. My ears are sweating as well. I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna do this. Let's see. I'm sweating. Let's do this. I'm hot. Uh, da, da, da, da. Oh, is this chat AI? Da, da, da, da. Hello.
• 36:18
How are you doing, Tony? Now let's do this. This is... [laughs] Uh. You are very good- Is that, is-... at turning me on. Is that ChatGPT AI? [laughs] I don't know. Hello, Mr. Smothers. Mr. Sandman.
• 36:35
You're very good at- Oh, shit. Hey, it's my... I'm a dumbass When you have finished recording, you may hang up or press one- What the fuck?... for more options. Goddammit. Oh, son of a bitch. It was my own fault. Ah.
• 36:45
[laughs] There's a surprise. [laughs] Now we'll do it again. Now we'll do it again. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Fuck. Okay, wait. Okay, wait, wait. Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello, hello. There you are.
• 36:57
Oh, fuck. What am I... What an idiot am I. When, uh, when Nathan left the- Awesome... when, when Nathan left the show, I turned, uh, the, uh, audio from the phone down, and I'm like, "Oh, fucking A."
• 37:09
There's a guy- And suddenly turned into Nathan Lane... there's a guy calling in. Oh, my God. Well, I've pierced the toast. Hey, hey, hey, welcome- [laughs]... to the radio program caller. Who do we have on the line?
• 37:19
This is Mark Peterson, Mon- from Ogden, Utah- Woo... on Prong Horn Cycle. Oh, ho. With his fancy new bike. And Prong Horn Cycle. Oh, yeah. So, uh, y- How are you guys doing, man? Well,
• 37:33
much better now that you're calling in and making our show better. [laughs] I don't know about all that. I'll try, though. Uh, yeah, I was...
• 37:42
So, I, you sexted me a little bit ago about something that was super awesome, and you wanted to be awesome on the show, and I'm like, "What? What could be so fucking awesome?" But, mm. Tell us. Yeah, I got it for you.
• 37:54
Um, so, uh, my boss, uh, um, Dustin Eckleson, um, he, he's a owner, operator of Prong Horn Cycles, and, uh, he's got a huge collection of bike stuff, kinda like I do, at his house.
• 38:09
Well, one night, I guess there were some kinda disruptance in the family unit, and, uh, he brought me a truckload of stuff. We're talking 17 bikes, 9 of them fully assembled.
• 38:22
Everything for 17 bikes and probably 10 or $12,000 worth of bike stuff, he just donated it to me. Shit. [laughs] Wow, awesome.
• 38:31
So when you, when you get these donated bikes and you build all your kickass shit, you're not just, like, hoarding it. Are you... How, how do you help other folks with those bikes? No, I'm, I'm, I'm hoarding it.
• 38:42
I'm hoarding it. [laughs] Uh, no, the, the truth is, is all that stuff that comes in, um, I, I generally don't charge people for anything.
• 38:54
If they come by and they're working on stuff and they're in my friend circle, I will just give them parts for free. You are a generous individual. No, it was given to me, so it's the least I can do.
• 39:07
I mean, uh, I'm just a conduit for bikes. They, they come through me, they flow through me, you know. It's just one of those things. I do like that term. I like that. Conduit for bikes.
• 39:17
You should make a T-shirt with your mug on it with your big-ass beard and be- [laughs]... Conduit for Bikes. How is your beard now? Your beard- With my mouth wide open... I don't know.
• 39:27
I mean, you're kinda like Tony Burger. Your beard grows way faster than mine, and Tony's hair grows way faster than mine, and I think it's only been a year and a half, and it's already, like, down to his ass almost.
• 39:38
It's fucking- It's not that long... big and weird long. I'm just lucky. I dunno. But, yeah, so your beard- [laughs] But you've had many beard face shapes, and it's, I love seeing them all. 'Cause I wish that my beard...
• 39:49
Well, I like doing my beard. Michael's beard looks awesome today, by the way. [laughs] We should- Hey, do- Hey, wait... do you guys do beard care? Yeah, we should- Do you have, like, products that you put in your beard?
• 39:58
We should actually start talking about beard products, 'cause yes. Yes, I do.
• 40:02
I'm kind of a beard product whore, and if we can get an affiliate thing with some freaking beard joint, like Beard Brand or Beard Dope or Beard whatever, we should start making money off that- Yeah...
• 40:12
'cause we have beards. And, uh, and I will distribute it to- Yeah, absolutely... everybody here with a beard. Tony gets nothing. [laughs] JK, myself- Even after-... and Mark...
• 40:21
even right after I shave, just get it while it's there. No grass on a busy highway, my friends. Give me 18 hours. 18 hours. No grass on a busy highway. It is called a thigh loofah for a reason. [laughs] Not to me.
• 40:35
[laughs] Hey, so did you guys get a bunch of snow recently? 'Cause we did. Yeah. Now it's all gone again. No, yeah, it didn't last very long. You have reached the maximum time permitted for recording your message.
• 40:45
Oh, you're shitting. If you're satisfied with your message, press one. To listen to your message, press two. [laughs] To erase and re-record- Wait. Hello?... press three.
• 40:52
Not positive what you meant, but- Uh, what do you want me to do on this, Greg? I don't think we- [laughs] I don't, I've never heard that thing before, and I, I- Are you still there?
• 40:59
You have reached the maximum time permitted- Oh... for recording your message. Are you still there? Okay, well, here. Okay. I'm still there. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, okay, okay, okay.
• 41:06
To listen to your message, press one. Okay, okay, okay, okay. To erase and re-record- Wait, wait, wait... press three. I'm gonna, I'm gonna try this. Jesus. Hey, Mark, are you still there? Are you still there? Oh, fuck.
• 41:16
Goddammit. You have reached the maximum time permitted- Fuck, shit, fuck... for recording your message. If you are satisfied with your message, press one. All right. To listen to your message, press two.
• 41:23
[laughs] To erase and re-record, press three. All right. I- We lost Mark. The words. But- We, we got, we got- No, just saying, the words... but, but- The, the volume, the words... but I- Sorry, I'm having trouble.
• 41:32
Oh, for- Your message has been saved. Bye. Are you having trouble? No, I'm having trouble with you. Okay. Yeah, okay. I don't know if, whether we got anything in there. All right, so here's what happened, folks. Uh.
• 41:44
[laughs] Hello. There he is. He's back. So here's what happened. Yeah, I'm here.
• 41:52
I was calling you back, and then we had two of you on there at the same time, and that was your voicemail telling us to go fuck off c- because we hadn't left you a message yet. [laughs]Can, can you guys hear me now?
• 42:05
Yeah, totally. Oh, yeah, that's super classic though. I just... That's just like us. We, th- we fuck up all the time, and thank God nobody calls us on it mostly. What are you guys doing over there? Nothing.
• 42:15
I- is that- Soldering... Oh, dope. Or whatever. Anyway, Mark, hey, thanks for calling in. All right, y'all. Uh, we... Did, did you listen to any of Nathan's, uh, uh, show with us? Oh, my goodness.
• 42:27
'Cause thank God he was on, otherwise we'd have nothing to talk about. Here's the deal. What a fuck. Okay. I don't know, I don't know how big fat biking and/or racing with classes in any race out your way is.
• 42:41
Like, is there a fat bike class in any local series? But the worst series in Wisconsin, Wisconsin Off Road Racing Series, ha- has been one of the hugest, uh, series in the country.
• 42:55
Typically, you'll find, you know, between 1,200 and 1,500 racers on a weekend, and they always had a fat bike class. Well, at least since 2015 after they thought it wasn't a fad anymore. [laughs] True.
• 43:07
And, um, Trek recently bought out the series, and they canceled the fat bike class. I'm like, "That's why I asked you-" Mm-hmm... to investigate. Oh, that's that question earlier this week. Yeah. Gotcha.
• 43:19
Do you, do you think the fucks, I mean, the fine people at Trek are... Holy, who is that little ti- it's beautiful. Um, uh- [laughs] Do you think that those people
• 43:33
have no more fat bikes to sell, so they're just gonna blow up the fat bike series? Or, I mean, uh, Trek, I... It's a minuscule amount of what they do, but it is still- I, I, I think they're weaning it out.
• 43:46
I think they're gonna- I think-... quit making fat bikes... I agree with you- Yep...
• 43:49
128%, but what I am looking for is actual verification because I think during the pandemic, there w- they, they had ramped up production, and for the 2020, 2021 years, they had a bunch of fat bikes, and now they still have a shit ton of them 'cause- Yeah...
• 44:08
to be fair, the fat bike market is not... Uh, okay, so the first fat biker- What it was... Well, he bought... The first fat biker bought, uh, hopefully a Pugsley 'cause there wasn't much before that- Sure...
• 44:22
except for custom. True. Then the guy's got a Pugsley- True... and it's an awesome bike, but, oh, he gets this idea in his head that there's something better, so he buys another bike, and that bike is maybe- Mm-hmm...
• 44:33
you know, it's, uh, it's maybe a little higher performing, a little lighter. Uh,
• 44:38
a- and as everybody got into the more racy, racy, racy, lighter, lighter, lighter stuff, you kinda got away from why a fat bike was badass in the first place. So, um- Right... but, yeah, I think that,
• 44:51
you know, Surly hasn't lost the love, although they do... Yeah, I'm not gonna bash them- [laughs]... 'cause they still do make fat bikes, but, uh, you know- Yeah... f- f- f- framed, they're...
• 45:03
Obviously, our area, Midwest, is the fat bike center of the world. You live in an outlier- Yeah... and you're one of the few people that actually still pimps fat bikes where you are. Um, but- Yep. Yeah...
• 45:17
you know, I mean, tell, uh, tell me, tell me, tell us, tell our listener- Tell them... how, uh, fat bikes, uh, play out in the... What do you call your valley? Utah. I know where it is. Ogden Valley. Ogden V- Ogden...
• 45:30
Ogden Valley. No, that's not what they call it. Well, I'm actually in Salt Lake Valley, um, but you know, we, the town is called Ogden, so I call it Ogden Valley. I know where it's... I've been to your par- Okay.
• 45:42
But- Dude, I've been to your parents' house. I know where you live. Yeah, that's it. Where he lives. My parents' house is in, officially in Ogden Valley, even though Ogden isn't in Ogden Valley. That's wacky.
• 45:55
Um, but it is wacky. It is wacky. But here's the point of the fat biking thing, right? Racing has been dwindling, and I believe it's completely been extinguished in Utah.
• 46:04
I don't know of a single fat bike race officially advertised anywhere. Well, you, you your- And that really bums me out... you yourself did several early on and- Yes, sir. I did...
• 46:13
got, got Ski Hill, got Ski Hills in on it, and, um- Yeah. Yeah... you know, got buy-in. You got buy-in. I don't, I don't... Yeah.
• 46:21
And, and okay, so you weren't on the call with Nathan, but here's one of the things that blew me away.
• 46:27
Why don't people that live in the Outer Banks on the East Coast or Fire Island or on the West Coast just outside of Monterey, California, or wherever, why don't they fucking ride fat bikes on the beach?
• 46:40
You gotta be kidding me. Yeah. I mean, gorgeous. This is the most greatest- Right... thing in the world. Right. I just don't know if they understand it. Like, the, the handwriting would be incredible after.
• 46:48
Yeah, it'd be unbelievable. Absolutely. Yeah, it would be. I agree 100%. You would have the same permanent grin- I don't know why. I think-... you have in the snow... certain types maybe. Right.
• 46:58
Well, some fucks are gonna get out there with electric fat bikes, I would assume. Well, some people will, some people will actually look at the rules and go like, "Oh, no biking allowed-" Dude, well, no, seriously.
• 47:06
I- "... on the beach," and be like, "No, seriously, I'm gonna go. I don't care. I, oh, I didn't read the sign." [laughs] Well, I was... So we were at, we were at Cisco. [laughs] So- Exactly.
• 47:13
Grip it and rip it and ask for forgiveness later... back in the olden times when, uh, Gomez and I used to do fatbike.com together, we went- That's right...
• 47:23
we went out to Interbike, and we spent a whole day just north of Monterey riding beach, and people were like, "What's that? Oh my God, that is so badass."
• 47:36
And we rode and rode and rode, and then nobody out there ever bought a fucking fat bike. [laughs] God, you would, you would think that there would be a community out there that would be able to have it. Right?
• 47:47
But I mean, I guess not. Maybe there's just other things to do. Yeah. That's my, that- Something about Cali, Southern- Unfortunately, that, that is my, that's my theory
• 47:57
because, um, Pokemon and all sorts of video games and also, I don't know- Everybody walks in LA. I don't know. Pretty much everybody has- Tacos... better shit to do out there than ride a bike on the beach.
• 48:09
I, I don't get it. Yeah. First of all, there's nothing better- Well, I'm gonna, I'm gonna blame Pokemon completely-... than riding a bike on the fucking beach
• 48:16
Also, who- We should blame Pokémon on the demise of fat biking. All right. I agree with that. Speaking of beach guy. [laughs] Hey, uh- Pokémon Go? Excuse me. Welcome. Mark, excuse me. Here's the thing. Yes, I'm here.
• 48:27
I, uh, I, I hear your, your Great Salt Lake- Mm-hmm... is dwindling, and what about- One of my favorite films. What about just- Sir, hi... riding around the edge of the lake on a fat bike? Yeah, it has to- Oh, yeah...
• 48:43
crunch it. Um, there, there are some fantastic- Crunch it... places to do that, but it's also a really bad idea in some ways. There are places out there where if you get stuck, you are fucked. Oh, yeah.
• 48:53
I mean, there, there's just no access to you, and you are walking out- But you have a lot of electronics... and you're walking out by sinking in feet in mud. Oh. So, bad idea. Been there.
• 49:01
I, so I, I, I'm a big fan of the land speed record, so I've been to Bonneville- Mm... a lot of times. And I took my [can clanks] can on the floor. I took my minivan- [laughs]...
• 49:13
out there on the salt flats and drove 108 miles an hour, 'cause it was as fast as it would go. And then I thought- Yeah... "Well, this is awesome."
• 49:21
And then I went back off the flats and then tried to clean my car at a car wash, and it, that stuff just so s- Just not come off? So sticky.
• 49:30
And I blame that for the untimely demise of that vehicle, because you could never- [laughs]... get the freaking salt off- Nope, nope... the thing. [laughs] It was so insidious. It was awesome.
• 49:40
God, and you know- It's like the worst thing you can do to a vehicle... I, I know we've talked about this, but you know my family founded Salt Lake, so I just didn't- Yeah, yeah...
• 49:49
I, I just don't know if they knew- That's true... how bad the salt was for your v- Of course, they only- The magic underpants, I think makes sense now. Well, they only had- [laughs] They only had horses back then.
• 49:58
Covered wagon. I mean, a covered wagon- Yeah, covered wagons, ugh... would salt just fine. Well, wood- They did not salt. Yeah, they, they were fine with salt. Yeah, yeah. You, you wanna be above the ground.
• 50:06
Right, wood is not- Yeah... bad with salt. I wanna knew who, who stuck their tongue in there the first time and said, "Damn, this is salty." Right? [laughs] Uh, I'm pretty sure it was Brigham Young. [laughs] I doubt.
• 50:19
I, there had to be people before Brigham Young. Uh... He just, he just capitalized on it. Natives. No, Jesus. See, they... No, the Indian, the Indians were smart enough. Jesus. They wouldn't do that.
• 50:29
Jesus came down, didn't he? Right? He came down and gave the plates. All right. Yeah. The plates and the undies. Oh, my God, this, this podcast- It was the plates and the undies... has digressed so fucking rapidly...
• 50:37
it was the plates and the undies, and then Jesus put his tongue in the lake and said, "Hey, it's salty." "It's salty." [laughs] [laughs] And he floated. And then he floated. And walked on water. Ah. Ah, yes.
• 50:47
God, this, this went down a really weird road. This is Cliff Notes for Mormonism.
• 50:51
[laughs] And I feel slightly obligated, or slightly- You weren't- Blasphemous or [laughs] Hey, you weren't even supposed to be here tonight. I, shit happens, man. [laughs] Shit happens. I'm not even supposed to be here.
• 51:02
[laughs] All right, Mark. Well, um, uh, do you wanna leave us with anything? [laughs] 'Cause, uh, yeah. Yes. Absolutely. Um- Solo...
• 51:09
uh, I just want everyone to kind of think about, uh, generosity and what, what they get in life and what they give away i- in life. And I, I've come to the conclusion that the more you give away, the more you get.
• 51:21
So I, I've... I don't know why it works that way, but that's what I'm doing, and it's gaining speed and steamrolling. I went from 30 bikes the last time we talked to 45, you know? It's just insane.
• 51:33
And, um, I don't deserve it, but I'm gonna give it away.
• 51:37
I'm gonna do everything I can to support my cycling community, and I, I hope that everyone that is listening will get involved in their local cycling communities and do something. Take, take a little action- Just-...
• 51:48
and give something away. Damn, dude. Yeah, no. This is, this is- Mm-hmm... a motherfucking important statement in- Yeah, tell us... a podcast that is normally just full of shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I love you, Mark.
• 52:00
We mostly just- I love you That's why I still have both of them. First of all, i- i- before you call in next time, let me know if you're gonna have any words of wisdom that actually make a difference.
• 52:08
'Cause that's, that's heavy. Fucking A. And good for you- [laughs]... and I fully agree. To be fair- To be fair...
• 52:14

• 52:24
if, if anybody really wanted to look at our eBay thing, we now have a little widget on the page of the show notes to see what we got on eBay. But here's the deal. I- Right...
• 52:35
I was starting to think about, like, I try and do a lot of stuff for a lot of people. I give some people good stuff. I charge other people a lot of money, because that's how it works. But- True... I don't know.
• 52:48
Fuck, I, I mean, I might not be getting it yet, and I feel bad that I'm such an idiot that I don't understand what you just, uh, basically put out there.
• 52:58
It's like give, and y- even if you won't receive, you're still gonna feel good about what you did. Yeah. See, that's the, I think that's the, the key ingredient. You have to give without expecting to receive. Exactly.
• 53:11
You have to just give. Exactly. Yeah. You, you, you... Absolutely, 100%. You know what?
• 53:17
If our, if our one listener gets this- You can't, you can't, like, twist the system and think you got it figured out and, um, like, start- Right... giving away shit like, "Oh, it's all gonna come back."
• 53:24
[laughs] You, you, you, you have to give it away without expecting any kind of praise or return- Yep... or even acknowledgement for it. You have a metal voice, by the way.
• 53:33
If you ever wanna be in a band, that was awesome. That was a good scream. Right on. [laughs] All right, Mark. Hey, a- anytime almost, I think this should be the Mark and, uh, JK and Tony show, and I should just- Yeah...
