Neither ambition nor the love of riches nor any of the passions which are unfortunately so common among courtiers were known at his court. He was everywhere called the father of the orphans and of the poor, and he was never happier than when he could distribute alms. He always granted what was requested of him in the name of Saint John the Evangelist. He died in the year of our Lord, 1066. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment. The law of God is in his heart. The Collect.

Let us pray. O God, who hast crowned with glory everlasting the blessed King Edward, thy confessor, grant us, we pray thee, so to revere him on earth, that we may reign with him in heaven forevermore. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach.
• 3:17
Blessed is the man who lives unreproved, who has no greed for gold, and puts no trust in his store of riches. Show us such a man, and we will be loud in his praise. Here is a life to wonder at. A man so tested and found perfect wins eternal honor. He kept clear of sin when sinful ways were easy.
• 3:48
Did no wrong, when wrong lay in his power. His treasure is safely preserved in the Lord's keeping, and wherever faithful men are met, his alms deeds will be remembered. THE GRADUAL. The just man shall flourish like the palm tree. In the house of the Lord he shall grow to greatness, like the cedars of Lebanon, to proclaim thy mercy in the morning, and thy truth in the night.
• 4:27
Alleluia. Alleluia. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he hath been proved, he shall receive the crown of life. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
• 4:51
At that time Jesus said to his disciples, your loins must be girt and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men awaiting their master's return from a wedding feast so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks at the door. Blessed are those servants whom their master will find watching when he comes. I promise you, he will gird himself and make them sit down to meet and minister to them, Whether he comes in the second quarter of the night or in the third, blessed are those servants if he finds them alert. Be sure of this. If the master of the house had known at what time the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and not allowed his house to be broken open.
• 5:52
You too then must stand ready for at what hour you think not, the Son of Man will come. The offertory. My truth and my mercy shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. The secret. In memory of thy saints, O Lord, we offer thee the sacrifice of praise by which we trust to be freed from both present and future evils through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
• 6:45
