  Science and Tech. And on this episode, we're going

  to be talking about Elon musk's SpaceX has starlink.

  So starlink if you're not Familiar is a constellation of
• 2:33
  Internet satellites and what does that mean?
• 2:36
  That means that there is an array of satellites that orbit
• 2:39
  the earth and the signal that they beam down to you.
• 2:46
  We'll give you the internet so you can have an Internet relay
• 2:50
  station at your house. It's basically like your cable
• 2:53
  box that you have currently that you get your internet from or if
• 2:58
  you don't have internet right now.

  From your cable box and, you know, cable provider and use it
• 3:05
  on your phone, the Wi-Fi that's on your phone.
• 3:07
  When you go to the different places.
• 3:08
  That's, you know, that's what they're trying to replace, but
• 3:11
  it's not going to be 4. Traditional internet areas.

  So not in the middle of City, not in towns, not in bigger
• 3:21
  population areas, it's going to be in rural area so places like
• 3:25
  and I've said this a million times before but my sister whose
• 3:30
  Five miles away my sister, she lives over a hill down, a hill

  than up another Hill. So, in that Valley region, you
• 3:38
  don't get any cell phone signal and it's almost impossible to
• 3:41
  get a good internet signal where she lives.

  The reason being is that the internet provider around here
• 3:49
  doesn't want to lay cables to her house and if they did they
• 3:54
  quoted her for ten thousand dollars for the internet to come
• 3:58
  to her house so that they They had a dig a hole, like drink,
• 4:01
  dig, a trench, lay some cable hire people do whole thing so
• 4:05
  we'll start link. Does they bridge that Gap?

  Starlink though is making some astronomers a little bit upset
• 4:12
  because they fly those satellites pretty close to the
• 4:16
  Earth. And when you look up into the
• 4:18
  night sky, you can actually see them with your naked eye in.
• 4:21
  There are plenty of places on the internet where you can find
• 4:25
  out where you can view the starlink satellites.
• 4:30
  So these things already up there, there is a lot of
• 4:33
  satellite startling satellites and orbit right now and if you
• 4:37
  use one of these apps or if you use a website, you can see them
• 4:41
  when they fly over your house or wherever you are.
• 4:44
  Absolutely amazing. That you can see these things.
• 4:47
  Now, it is a bad thing for astronomy though.
• 4:51
  So, I'm an amateur astronomer, I've seen plenty of things in
• 4:55
  the night sky. I've seen, you know, planets,
• 4:58
  I've seen nebula, I've seen distant stars and sometimes, oh,
• 5:04
  satellite, or a plane will whizzed by in your Scopes view.
• 5:10
  Now, when that happens, it's usually just a little tiny Dot.
• 5:14
  You can't really, you know, doesn't really bug you but
• 5:17
  apparently starlink is really bright because it's much much
• 5:21
  closer than traditional satellites.
• 5:24
  Now SpaceX has been tweaking their satellites for a while.
• 5:28
  They painted a few of them, a darker color on the bottom.
• 5:32
  So they didn't reflect as much sunlight back down towards the
• 5:35
  Earth, back down towards us on our mother Gaia.
• 5:39
  Now, what they're going to be doing in the near future, with
• 5:41
  the Starling satellites is they will be tweaking, the
• 5:43
  orientation of Satellites as they fly towards their higher
• 5:48
  orbits so that will make the solar panels Edge on relative to
• 5:54
  the Earth. So before the solar panels were
• 5:58
  splayed out. So you'd see the shine, they
• 6:00
  would reflect the sunlight and you'd see the brightness of
• 6:06
  these solar panels because the satellites aren't that big.
• 6:09
  But solar panels make them much much bigger and each You know,
• 6:15
  each each solar array will be much thinner as it's a John
• 6:22
  relative to the Earth's surface. So it'll reflect much less
• 6:25
  sunlight back toward the ground, after their initial deployment.
• 6:29
  And during that initial deployment, the really bright
• 6:33
  and they will also deploy a shield which is similar to like
• 6:37
  the the umbrella you have on your back patio or your your mom
• 6:43
  and dad's patio or You know, at a restaurant when you're eating
• 6:46
  outside may have an umbrella over your table.
• 6:49
  It's going to be similar to that or like a car sun visor,
• 6:52
  something like that. It'll block the light from
• 6:55
  hitting the highly reflective antennas in the first place.
• 6:59
  So astronomers were mad for a little while because you can see
• 7:04
  these things flying over the sky where they were doing the
• 7:08
  research. And if it's an optical telescope
• 7:12
  like something that you would have in your backyard could
• 7:15
  really mess some things up and it looks like SpaceX is really
• 7:19
  taking initiative to to change the way that they deploy their
• 7:26
  starlink satellites in the future.
• 7:29
  So that being said, my friends, they're in this for the Long
• 7:34
  Haul and they're going to be making thousands of deployments
• 7:39
  in the future. ER, so they have to get this
• 7:41
  right? And they're working on it and
• 7:43
  they know that it's a, you know, it's important to astronomers to
• 7:45
  have this non-reflective surface towards the Earth, so good for
• 7:51
  them, you know, they're working with astronomers.
• 7:53
