- 0:03Speaker 1: On Twitter asking you this is the Patriots Catch twenty
- 0:08Speaker 1: two podcasts with Evan Lazar and Alex Bars, Bizarre and Lazarre.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Hello, everybody nailed it?
- 0:15Speaker 3: Joined us always by our Bara. Here is Evan Lazar
- 0:22Speaker 3: and Alex Bars.
- 0:23Speaker 4: I think that the hardest part of breaking down tape
- 0:27Speaker 4: is breaking down the run game because it's never one thing,
- 0:30Speaker 4: Like it's always a bunch of different things on one
- 0:33Speaker 4: play that.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Leads to a bad run.
- 0:36Speaker 4: It's very seldom like I can just look at this
- 0:38Speaker 4: and say this one thing, if they just fix this
- 0:42Speaker 4: one thing, then the whole thing will work right. Like
- 0:45Speaker 4: It's like that really doesn't happen a whole lot with
- 0:48Speaker 4: the run game. Well, Patriots got the run game going
- 0:52Speaker 4: just a little bit, a little bit on Sunday in
- 0:54Speaker 4: the first half. I want to discuss that, Alex, you know,
- 0:58Speaker 4: a much better game performance. And I want to talk
- 1:01Speaker 4: about the why, because we talk about the why on
- 1:03Speaker 4: this show and how we get there and all those
- 1:06Speaker 4: different types of things. And we're gonna talk Drake May
- 1:09Speaker 4: and this Titans game. We're gonna talk a little bit
- 1:11Speaker 4: of Cleveland Browns because I I do think this is
- 1:14Speaker 4: a fun game for a defensive. You know, Drake May
- 1:18Speaker 4: against the Browns defense, it's probably the best defense he's
- 1:22Speaker 4: gonna face, maybe all year on Sunday. So I don't
- 1:26Speaker 4: know if Dylan Gabriel and the Browns offense is gonna
- 1:30Speaker 4: be able to go, you know, toe to toe, so
- 1:34Speaker 4: to speak, with Drake May enough to really put some
- 1:38Speaker 4: pressure on the Patriots offense to score. But I'm interested
- 1:41Speaker 4: in all of that. I'm jumping right into it today. Sorry,
- 1:44Speaker 4: I you know, didn't even exchange any pleasantries, you know.
- 1:47Speaker 4: We I was told Alex, and it's Alex, it's Evan,
- 1:51Speaker 4: it's Alex behind the glass, Patriots catch twenty two, here
- 1:55Speaker 4: with you for the next couple of hours. And I
- 1:57Speaker 4: was told by somebody on Twitter, Uh, just now, Alex,
- 2:02Speaker 4: that we bicker too much during the show, and therefore
- 2:08Speaker 4: this person feels as though that ruins some of the
- 2:11Speaker 4: vibe of the show and the show. I couldn't disagree more.
- 2:15Speaker 4: It's a talk show there. I'll take feedback. I try
- 2:18Speaker 4: my best. Sometimes I get a little snarky with feedback.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I'm not gonna lie, but I try my best to
- 2:23Speaker 4: take feedback. But this is one piece of feedback that
- 2:26Speaker 4: is never going to go away, like we are never
- 2:28Speaker 4: going to stop bickering like siblings.
- 2:31Speaker 2: There's no show away, that's not a show.
- 2:34Speaker 4: We were texting last night and we were bickering at
- 2:37Speaker 4: each other about our athletic date that you just hadsane
- 2:41Speaker 4: what means I had an insane take? You you're telling
- 2:44Speaker 4: me that you know we don't have to get into it.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It's fine, but yes we we. This is what we do.
- 2:49Speaker 4: We do it twenty four to seven. This is just
- 2:51Speaker 4: our natural existence, this is our natural state of our friendship,
- 2:55Speaker 4: and it's that's not going away.
- 2:57Speaker 2: We just both like to argue. Both competitive.
- 2:59Speaker 3: So yeah, so that's a very good point.
- 3:01Speaker 2: You can be competitive without having been an athlete, as
- 3:04Speaker 2: you would put.
- 3:04Speaker 4: It, that's a very good point. We are both competitive
- 3:09Speaker 4: and we both like to argue, and so then we
- 3:12Speaker 4: get into these sometimes admittedly semantics arguments that we both
- 3:18Speaker 4: are just not going to move off of our stance
- 3:20Speaker 4: on it, and we do get bogged down, and I
- 3:22Speaker 4: try to move the show along when those things happen.
- 3:25Speaker 4: So I just want to have a little fun with that.
- 3:29Speaker 4: That's who we are. That's the show. But anyways, to
- 3:32Speaker 4: football and to the Patriots. So one of the big
- 3:35Speaker 4: themes that I opened last week's show with when we
- 3:38Speaker 4: were talking about the run game and the way defenses
- 3:42Speaker 4: were defending Drake May and this Patriots offense, we talked
- 3:47Speaker 4: a lot about.
- 3:48Speaker 3: The safety structures.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Right, Are they playing a lot of single high Are
- 3:51Speaker 4: they playing a lot of too high safety shells in
- 3:54Speaker 4: this game? And now I'll put this caveat on this.
- 3:58Speaker 4: This is kind of what the Titans. This is their
- 4:01Speaker 4: system is to play a lot of two high shells.
- 4:04Speaker 4: The Browns, for example, play a lot of single high safety.
- 4:07Speaker 4: So this could be just simply the opponent in a
- 4:10Speaker 4: one week thing. But in this game, the Titans came
- 4:15Speaker 4: out first drive two high safeties, They had two high safeties,
- 4:20Speaker 4: they played with lighter boxes, And this was my whole
- 4:23Speaker 4: thing with the Patriots running game was My only concern
- 4:27Speaker 4: about the Patriots running game would be that when teams
- 4:31Speaker 4: start to adjust to how well Drake May is playing,
- 4:35Speaker 4: and they start to game plan the Patriots passing game,
- 4:37Speaker 4: and they start to take the Patriots passing game a
- 4:41Speaker 4: little bit more seriously and put a little bit more
- 4:43Speaker 4: respect on Stefan Diggs and Kaishan Boody and Pop Douglas
- 4:48Speaker 4: and the Patriots outside receivers. Once that happened, where the
- 4:53Speaker 4: Patriots gonna be able to run the football, because when
- 4:56Speaker 4: you're running into seven to eight man boxes all the time,
- 4:59Speaker 4: when there's an extra hat in the box, Like, if
- 5:01Speaker 4: you can't run against those fronts, it's not ideal. Like
- 5:04Speaker 4: I'm not saying that it's that you can never run
- 5:07Speaker 4: against the lam.
- 5:08Speaker 2: You're just gonna have less success. When there's more defenders
- 5:10Speaker 2: in your way, You're gonna have less success.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Right, especially on traditional runs. So the fact that they
- 5:15Speaker 4: were able to come out in this game and remondro
- 5:17Speaker 4: Stevenson on the opening drive goes for like eight yards
- 5:21Speaker 4: of carry, you know, I think it was forty two
- 5:22Speaker 4: yards on five carries on that opening drive. To me,
- 5:26Speaker 4: that really is the chess match, Like that is the
- 5:30Speaker 4: x's and o's chess match between play callers. Because now,
- 5:33Speaker 4: when the Titans give up all these rushing yards in
- 5:36Speaker 4: the first half, Dinard Wilson, their defensive coordinator, is kind
- 5:40Speaker 4: of playing a game of chicken with Josh McDaniels, right,
- 5:42Speaker 4: Like who is going to blink first? Is Josh McDaniels
- 5:46Speaker 4: gonna start spamming pass plays into two high shells, or
- 5:49Speaker 4: is Denard Wilson going to start playing one high to
- 5:53Speaker 4: get another defender in the box to stop the run.
- 5:55Speaker 4: In this case, it kind of happened, I would say,
- 5:58Speaker 4: more in the second quarter than it in the second half.
- 6:02Speaker 4: But in the second quarter they started to try to
- 6:05Speaker 4: fly that safety up and get more support in the
- 6:09Speaker 4: run game in the box, and Drake May in the
- 6:11Speaker 4: passing game opened it up and they started hitting throws
- 6:14Speaker 4: down the field. So if this is how they can
- 6:17Speaker 4: play offensively, it's a pick your poison league when it
- 6:22Speaker 4: comes to the scheme stuff. It's great news. Like this
- 6:25Speaker 4: is great news for the Patriots. Obviously, the way Drake
- 6:27Speaker 4: May is playing is great news on itself, but the
- 6:30Speaker 4: fact that they were able to go into this game
- 6:32Speaker 4: against the Titans, and I know it's not the eighty
- 6:34Speaker 4: five Bears, like they're not a great defense, but the
- 6:36Speaker 4: fact that they were able to go into this game
- 6:38Speaker 4: against the Titans and kind of play the way the
- 6:41Speaker 4: game dictated offensively and not force it one way or
- 6:45Speaker 4: another and still have success, whether it was running the
- 6:48Speaker 4: football against two high safety shells or throwing the ball.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Once the Titans adjusted a little bit, that's good offense.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Like that's when you know you have a really good
- 6:56Speaker 4: offense is when you can just kind of let the
- 6:59Speaker 4: game dictate what you call and how you run your offense.
- 7:03Speaker 4: So I was really encouraged by the fact that they
- 7:05Speaker 4: got the run game going a little bit in this
- 7:08Speaker 4: first half, not necessarily from a is it sustainable standpoint
- 7:12Speaker 4: or did they find something standpoint, but more because they're
- 7:16Speaker 4: responding to the chess match and they're able to take
- 7:18Speaker 4: advantage of the opportunities.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And I do wonder if there was an element to
- 7:21Speaker 2: all of this of you know, becoming a mental thing.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And regardless of how they got it going against who
- 7:27Speaker 2: they got it going against, they got it going a
- 7:28Speaker 2: little bit, and it just you know, makes it easier
- 7:32Speaker 2: for everybody. Like you had, you know, you hit a
- 7:33Speaker 2: layup right right, you know, and out that running the
- 7:37Speaker 2: ball the Titans is the layup. Almost everybody pointed, well,
- 7:39Speaker 2: Jeffrey Simmons was out most of the game. He was
- 7:42Speaker 2: on the field for that first drive where they were
- 7:44Speaker 2: ripping it, yep. And let's not forget about Devandre Sweat.
- 7:48Speaker 2: He's also a really good player. So it's not like
- 7:50Speaker 2: you're running on both of them. But still a still
- 7:53Speaker 2: a good player. So I just think it was it
- 7:55Speaker 2: was probably helpful to just mentally that, like, hey, all right,
- 7:58Speaker 2: we got one, right, you know, we were able to
- 8:02Speaker 2: get it going, we were able to get it going
- 8:03Speaker 2: on the ground, We're able to lean on him up front,
- 8:05Speaker 2: and now you build on that going forward. It's gonna
- 8:07Speaker 2: be a lot harder this week. Brown's a number one
- 8:09Speaker 2: run defense in the league, which is kind of nuts
- 8:11Speaker 2: when you think about it for a team that is
- 8:13Speaker 2: losing as much as they are, yeah, and has opponents
- 8:15Speaker 2: running as much as they do to be that good
- 8:17Speaker 2: of a run defense, but they are, so I don't
- 8:19Speaker 2: think they're going for like one seventy this week like
- 8:22Speaker 2: they did against the Titans. That's probably a bit much.
- 8:24Speaker 2: But if they can have similar success in the in
- 8:28Speaker 2: the macro vision of it against the Browns, that would
- 8:31Speaker 2: be very encouraging.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, they were able to run the ball
- 8:35Speaker 4: early out of some three receiver sets, and I thought
- 8:38Speaker 4: in this game maccollins really stepped up and had probably
- 8:42Speaker 4: what I would say is like a peak mccollins game
- 8:45Speaker 4: when he is blocking well and he's catching some explosives
- 8:48Speaker 4: in the passing game, like that's the type of player
- 8:50Speaker 4: that he is when he's at his best, and he
- 8:53Speaker 4: had one of those games. I thought the tight ends
- 8:54Speaker 4: blocked a lot better in this game, Henry and Hooper
- 8:57Speaker 4: in line blocking, especially in the run game was much better.
- 9:01Speaker 4: So all of those things help, you know, when you
- 9:03Speaker 4: get those peripheral blocks and you block you know, edges,
- 9:06Speaker 4: and you block force defenders, and you block safeties and
- 9:09Speaker 4: linebackers up to the second level, like that's how you
- 9:12Speaker 4: turn some of these three four yard runs into sixteen
- 9:15Speaker 4: yard runs and you get those averages up that way.
- 9:18Speaker 4: And then that brings us to Drake May, who is
- 9:20Speaker 4: just continues to be on a heater. You know, I
- 9:23Speaker 4: said yesterday, and I want to get to some of it.
- 9:25Speaker 4: But you know, as we kind of unpack the good,
- 9:28Speaker 4: the bad and the stuff that gets you beat, don't
- 9:30Speaker 4: have a lot of stuff.
- 9:30Speaker 2: To cut got them beating, really.
- 9:32Speaker 4: But in terms of the good with Drake May, the passer,
- 9:36Speaker 4: the downfield, just the downfield throws are just really not
- 9:42Speaker 4: only are they increasing in volume, but the level of
- 9:45Speaker 4: difficulty on some of these throws it's extremely impressive to watch.
- 9:50Speaker 4: I think one of the things that's the most encouraging
- 9:53Speaker 4: to me from this game and just in general from
- 9:55Speaker 4: where Drake May is at right now, is how well
- 9:57Speaker 4: he's seeing the field and how well he's seen post
- 10:00Speaker 4: snap rotation. So a lot of times with the young quarterbacks,
- 10:04Speaker 4: your defenses will spin the dial and they'll put you know,
- 10:07Speaker 4: two safeties back and then they'll go into one high
- 10:09Speaker 4: safety coverage post snap, or they'll vice versa, and they're
- 10:13Speaker 4: changing the pictures constantly on them, and Drake May is
- 10:16Speaker 4: just seeing coverage. He's seeing rotation extremely well right now.
- 10:20Speaker 4: He's understanding where the openings are and the various coverages
- 10:24Speaker 4: that teams are throwing at him. So when you're reading
- 10:26Speaker 4: the field and you're seeing things clearly and you're playing
- 10:29Speaker 4: on time, that in itself is going to make you accurate.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Like that helps a lot in terms of accuracy in
- 10:37Speaker 4: terms of you know, completion percentages. And I know he's
- 10:40Speaker 4: got all sorts of records now with that Patriots records.
- 10:44Speaker 4: So I don't really have much more to add on
- 10:46Speaker 4: the on the great stuff that he's doing because it's
- 10:49Speaker 4: just every week now, and like you know, I have
- 10:51Speaker 4: some nitpicks about this game from him, But if this
- 10:55Speaker 4: is the baseline performance that they're getting out of Drake
- 10:58Speaker 4: May against Crappy Tea. I mean he's going to be
- 11:02Speaker 4: in the MVP conversation because this is this is right.
- 11:06Speaker 4: If this is it, like, if this is his floor
- 11:09Speaker 4: as a player now is what we saw against the Titans,
- 11:13Speaker 4: then I don't really know how you don't consider him
- 11:16Speaker 4: an MVP candidate at top five quarterback, top ten quarterback,
- 11:20Speaker 4: wherever you want to put that. So that's all the
- 11:22Speaker 4: nice things I have to say about Drake May because
- 11:24Speaker 4: it's getting kind of redundant at this point.
- 11:26Speaker 3: I feel like I every.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Week, like, yeah, I can sit here and talk about
- 11:30Speaker 4: you know, the throw to Matt Collins on the sidelines
- 11:33Speaker 4: a great one.
- 11:34Speaker 3: The couple to Booty was a great one.
- 11:35Speaker 4: The one to Digs later in the game was obviously
- 11:38Speaker 4: just like an extended handoff down the sideline, just Stefon Diggs,
- 11:42Speaker 4: who also you know, showed great late hands on that
- 11:45Speaker 4: play and just a great you know pitch and catch
- 11:47Speaker 4: from those two guys. It's getting a little bit boring
- 11:51Speaker 4: talking about all the good things, and that's how you
- 11:53Speaker 4: know that he's really good, because it got kind of
- 11:55Speaker 4: boring with twelve at times.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Too. The word I it's I talked about this last week, right,
- 12:02Speaker 2: when do we go when we covered Brady, we didn't
- 12:05Speaker 2: come in here. We did we didn't come in here
- 12:08Speaker 2: because we didn't work here yet, but we didn't. We
- 12:09Speaker 2: didn't go on our shows and say, Wow, they really
- 12:12Speaker 2: have something in Tom Brady, Like he's looked at all
- 12:15Speaker 2: these things he's doing. It was just the norm. Yeah,
- 12:18Speaker 2: And I talked about this last week like that's kind
- 12:21Speaker 2: of the next step for Drake May. Is not that
- 12:23Speaker 2: we're ever going to stop owing and eyeing over it,
- 12:25Speaker 2: because it's really impressive, but when does it kind of
- 12:28Speaker 2: become Wow, look what Drake May's doing, and or when
- 12:31Speaker 2: does it go from look what Drake May's doing to like, oh,
- 12:34Speaker 2: that's Drake May. That's Drake May doing Drake May things right.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And I think we're getting there. The the for a
- 12:41Speaker 2: guy that the craziest thing for me from this game
- 12:45Speaker 2: with Drake May. I mean, the downfield stuff is bananas.
- 12:48Speaker 2: It's ridiculous. The third I didn't check actually after Monday
- 12:55Speaker 2: Night Football, but I think Jalen Hurts his third in
- 12:58Speaker 2: the league in deep ball completion percentage at like forty percent,
- 13:02Speaker 2: like forty seven to forty percent, which is a really
- 13:04Speaker 2: good number. On throws twenty plus yards downfield forty eight
- 13:06Speaker 2: forty nine percent. Like, wow, that's pretty good. Drake May
- 13:11Speaker 2: is at seventy seven percent, number one in the league.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Sam Darnold also randomly up in the seventies, but like
- 13:17Speaker 2: Drake May, has not a good passer rating, not a
- 13:21Speaker 2: great passer rating.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Drake May is a perfect passer rating. On throws twenty
- 13:25Speaker 4: plus yards downfield, You're.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Not supposed to do that. Yeah, I actually took a
- 13:29Speaker 2: spin down, you know, down the analytics way, Evan, you'll
- 13:32Speaker 2: like that because some of those numbers to just for
- 13:37Speaker 2: quarterback efficiency, what I worry, what you do. I'm actually
- 13:39Speaker 2: not gonna dump on it.
- 13:40Speaker 3: No, I know you're not gonna dump on it.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I just so some of those numbers correct me if
- 13:44Speaker 2: I'm wrong. I don't remember exactly which ones I looked at,
- 13:46Speaker 2: but like, they weigh different throws differently to gauge overall
- 13:51Speaker 2: quarterback efficiency because you're not supposed to be as efficient
- 13:54Speaker 2: throwing the ball twenty yards down the field as you are,
- 13:56Speaker 2: you know, throwing the ball five yards, So the deep
- 13:58Speaker 2: throws are weighted differently with the expectation that it's not
- 14:01Speaker 2: a truly efficient throw. Well, Drake May is breaking some
- 14:05Speaker 2: of these numbers because you're not like they're not the
- 14:09Speaker 2: formula is not written for this guy doing this this well,
- 14:14Speaker 2: so that's all to say. And the I mean the
- 14:17Speaker 2: throw to mac Hollins another one. Remember when everybody was
- 14:19Speaker 2: complaining this was a bigger thing last year, but you
- 14:21Speaker 2: still kind of hear it about how you know two
- 14:25Speaker 2: high shells Cover two's ruining the NFL and we don't
- 14:28Speaker 2: get as much offense anymore. Try telling that to Drake Matte.
- 14:30Speaker 2: He'll put the ball right in the right in the
- 14:31Speaker 2: cover two hole. He's cracked it, he's figured it out.
- 14:34Speaker 2: So the throw to mac Collins, throw a Kasha on
- 14:36Speaker 2: booty all that, the craziest thing is as good as
- 14:39Speaker 2: he's been deep one of the most ridiculous or one
- 14:43Speaker 2: of the things, biggest things we talked about with Drake
- 14:45Speaker 2: May in the draft. We can rewind it, you know
- 14:46Speaker 2: a year and a half. Here is his accuracy and
- 14:50Speaker 2: even into the summer, his short area accuracy right, and
- 14:54Speaker 2: he's dealing with the sprays and can he hit these
- 14:56Speaker 2: underneath routes and he wants to push the ball down
- 14:58Speaker 2: the field. He was what we'irteen or fourteen I think
- 15:02Speaker 2: on throws inside of ten yards, and that's not the headline.
- 15:06Speaker 2: If he did that at any point in the last
- 15:08Speaker 2: year and a half, we would have been like, oh
- 15:10Speaker 2: my god, Drake May's accuracy, Like, whoa, this is what growth.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And that's not to say it's not, but a guy
- 15:16Speaker 2: who we picked at more than maybe anything else. A
- 15:20Speaker 2: short area accuracy is just dotting teams underneath, and it's
- 15:24Speaker 2: the sub headline. Yeah, that's insane to me. Yeah.
- 15:28Speaker 4: So he's eleven for fourteen right now on throws over
- 15:31Speaker 4: twenty yards, so seventy eight percent, as you I think
- 15:34Speaker 4: you said a minute ago.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so he's like seventy seven change. Yeah, I'll find it.
- 15:40Speaker 3: It's seventy eight percent.
- 15:41Speaker 2: No, but like compared to the league.
- 15:43Speaker 4: So it's what's crazy is that some of the incompletions
- 15:48Speaker 4: even are like catchable balls that were borderline completion. It's like,
- 15:54Speaker 4: for example, one of the incompletions is in New Orleans
- 15:57Speaker 4: to MATC Collins on the second third down bomb. The
- 16:01Speaker 4: first one gets wiped out by OPI. On Stefan Diggs,
- 16:04Speaker 4: he throws the same route again to Matt Collins and
- 16:08Speaker 4: it goes off mac Collins's hands, and there might have
- 16:11Speaker 4: been DPI on that play. Doesn't good you know what
- 16:13Speaker 4: I'm trying to say. That could easily have just been
- 16:16Speaker 4: in a completion. So he easily could be like thirteen
- 16:19Speaker 4: for thirteen if you look at some of the incompletions
- 16:22Speaker 4: that he has throwing the ball deep. So it just
- 16:26Speaker 4: he is the best deep ball thrower in the NFL.
- 16:28Speaker 4: He's number one in the league in pretty much every
- 16:30Speaker 4: stat at this point throwing the ball.
- 16:32Speaker 2: So just for scale here and this is updated after
- 16:35Speaker 2: Monday Night Football. Top five among qualifying quarterbacks. So Jacoby, Brissett,
- 16:40Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson, and Brock pretty oddly enough qualify, but or
- 16:44Speaker 2: are up here, but they don't qualify they don't have
- 16:46Speaker 2: enough throws. Matthew Stafford fifth forty seven point two percent.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Good number, Yeah, good deep ball number.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Tua forty seven point four percent, but it's a good
- 16:57Speaker 4: deep ball completion number. Jalen Hurts his third forty eight
- 17:00Speaker 4: point five percent.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Good good thrower, good number.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Good deep ball thrower, forty eight point five. Sam Donald's
- 17:07Speaker 4: at sixty eight.
- 17:08Speaker 2: So we're jumping twenty points now, he's really good. And
- 17:11Speaker 2: then you got to jump another ten points to get
- 17:13Speaker 2: to Drake May. Yeah, passer rating Sam Donald second one
- 17:18Speaker 2: thirty seven point five, Jalen Hurts one thirty four point
- 17:21Speaker 2: two and passerating the one thirties nuts Matthew Stafford won
- 17:25Speaker 2: thirty point six, and it kind of drops off from there.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Drake May one fifty eight point three. And if the
- 17:31Speaker 2: number one fifty eight point three stands out to you,
- 17:33Speaker 2: is a football fin you know why? Yeah, it's a
- 17:36Speaker 2: perfect passer rating on deep passes you're not supposed to be.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It's one thing of a perfect passer rating on like
- 17:40Speaker 2: short passes that happens sometimes you're not supposed to have
- 17:43Speaker 2: a perfect passer rating here.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he's just and that's the pale wherever
- 17:47Speaker 4: he wants. And you mentioned the whole shots, Like, I think,
- 17:52Speaker 4: out of all the quarterbacks I've watched this year, he's
- 17:55Speaker 4: the best whole shot artist in the league. Like, he
- 17:57Speaker 4: throws the cover two hole better than any quarterback in
- 18:00Speaker 4: the NFL, to the point where if I'm an opponent,
- 18:03Speaker 4: like I almost don't play cover two against the Patriots
- 18:05Speaker 4: anymore because he's so good at it, Like you're just
- 18:07Speaker 4: asking for him to throw it there if you play
- 18:10Speaker 4: that coverage, and he's just going to keep throwing it there.
- 18:12Speaker 4: So he's just fantastic throwing the ball deep. But in particular,
- 18:18Speaker 4: if there's one throw where you say, okay, what's like
- 18:20Speaker 4: the Drake may throw, it's the whole shot. And I
- 18:23Speaker 4: think he might be the best quarterback in the entire
- 18:25Speaker 4: NFL at hitting that cover two hole along the sideline
- 18:30Speaker 4: he's dealing.
- 18:30Speaker 3: He's on an absolute heater.
- 18:32Speaker 2: By the way, one other thing on the deep ball numbers,
- 18:34Speaker 2: so I can continue to gush for a minute here. Yeah,
- 18:37Speaker 2: turnover worthy plays yep, zero.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Yeah, so he has one turnover worthy play over the
- 18:41Speaker 4: last four weeks. He had one throw to Pop Douglas
- 18:45Speaker 4: in New Orleans that was inside that should have been outside,
- 18:48Speaker 4: that probably could have been picked that they counted as
- 18:50Speaker 4: a turnover worthy play. So you're seeing the big time
- 18:53Speaker 4: throws continue like they were his rookie season, But the
- 18:57Speaker 4: turnover worthy plays are being shrunk to a very small level.
- 19:02Speaker 4: And that's hard to do because a lot of the
- 19:05Speaker 4: times when you see quarterbacks that cut down on turnovers,
- 19:08Speaker 4: it's because they're not being as aggressive as they once
- 19:10Speaker 4: were throwing the ball down the field. He's still being
- 19:13Speaker 4: aggressive throwing the ball down the field, and he's still
- 19:16Speaker 4: challenging windows down the field, but he's not turning the
- 19:19Speaker 4: ball over like crazy. So the juxtaposition there is pretty crazy.
- 19:23Speaker 5: You know.
- 19:23Speaker 4: I think there are some credit in that sort of
- 19:27Speaker 4: credit pie, Like, yeah, obviously probably seventy five percent of
- 19:31Speaker 4: it goes to Drake May himself. Maybe like another fifteen
- 19:35Speaker 4: percent goes to the receivers. Yeah, I think a lot
- 19:37Speaker 4: of the comp of the you know, kind of compliment
- 19:41Speaker 4: sandwich here or the pie should also just go to
- 19:44Speaker 4: McDaniel's slash the offensive line. Like when you're not getting
- 19:48Speaker 4: tons of pressure.
- 19:49Speaker 2: You look at he's throwing from some very clean pipe.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Right when you're throwing from clean pockets, you're just naturally
- 19:55Speaker 4: going to turn the ball over less. And so I
- 19:58Speaker 4: think that's a big part of his success down the
- 20:01Speaker 4: field has been they've done a great job of when
- 20:04Speaker 4: they know they're going to take a shot, Like when
- 20:06Speaker 4: they know they're going to take a shot to Kishan
- 20:08Speaker 4: Boody right before halftime there on the touchdown, you know
- 20:12Speaker 4: they have chips on the ends, right, they're chipping the edges.
- 20:15Speaker 4: They're helping out Will Campbell and Morgan Moses. If you
- 20:18Speaker 4: actually watch that pass protection, and I put this in
- 20:21Speaker 4: after further review, there's only one one on one across
- 20:25Speaker 4: the entire offensive line. Only one guy has no help.
- 20:29Speaker 4: It's Jared Wilson. He's one on one on the three technique.
- 20:32Speaker 4: But everywhere else the tackles have help. Brad Burry has
- 20:35Speaker 4: help on when he was in the slide side with
- 20:37Speaker 4: Bradbury and Moses, so the three of them are kind
- 20:39Speaker 4: of helped out. Campbell's got the chip on the end.
- 20:42Speaker 4: So when they know that they're going to push the
- 20:43Speaker 4: ball down the field, they're doing a great job of
- 20:45Speaker 4: supporting the offensive line and making sure that he stays
- 20:48Speaker 4: protected and he stays blocked. So it just is all
- 20:51Speaker 4: of it kind of coming together. It's not, you know,
- 20:53Speaker 4: I don't want to put too much all to Drake
- 20:57Speaker 4: May versus all the other stuff. It's kind of everything
- 21:00Speaker 4: right that that is really getting them rolling. The other
- 21:02Speaker 4: thing that you know stands out from this game run game,
- 21:05Speaker 4: obviously deep passing game, Drake May's performance, but these wide
- 21:09Speaker 4: receivers Alex just continue to make plays and this room
- 21:12Speaker 4: now we can confidently Say is having a massive turnaround
- 21:18Speaker 4: season where they're going to probably finish. And again, I
- 21:21Speaker 4: understand that a lot of people's reactions to these numbers
- 21:24Speaker 4: and the production from the receiver room is that when
- 21:27Speaker 4: you have great quarterback play, it helps right that you're
- 21:31Speaker 4: obviously putting the ball in good positions, and you're putting
- 21:33Speaker 4: the ball and good with good placement down the field.
- 21:36Speaker 4: The receivers are going to make catches. But now they're
- 21:39Speaker 4: basically a top ten receiver room production wise in the NFL.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Stevan Diggs is on pace for ninety five catches in
- 21:47Speaker 4: eleven hundred yards with the Patriots. Kashawan Boody is on
- 21:50Speaker 4: pace for like over eight hundred and fifty yards this season,
- 21:54Speaker 4: So they're probably going to have to at least eight
- 21:57Speaker 4: hundred plus yard receivers as long as both the those
- 22:00Speaker 4: guys stay healthy. And then Hunter Henry is you know,
- 22:02Speaker 4: not far behind too, and his production is a third
- 22:05Speaker 4: guy here. But in terms of the receivers, you know,
- 22:09Speaker 4: like I mentioned earlier, Mac Collins makes a couple of
- 22:11Speaker 4: plays in this game, Pop Douglas has the fourth down conversion.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Digs and Booty continue to just do it every single week.
- 22:20Speaker 4: This is it's been the growth in the maduration and
- 22:23Speaker 4: obviously adding digs makes everything easier for everybody. But it's
- 22:29Speaker 4: been a complete one eighty from what we've seen the
- 22:32Speaker 4: last two years to this year, especially last year to
- 22:35Speaker 4: this year at the wide receiver position, it.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Really has been. And I like that they've gotten Pop
- 22:39Speaker 2: Douglas going a little bit here. I've said it before.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I think he can be a really useful part of
- 22:43Speaker 2: the offense. Matt Collins seems to be somebody that when
- 22:46Speaker 2: they do get the run game going. We saw it
- 22:48Speaker 2: in Miami and we saw it this week when they
- 22:50Speaker 2: hit some of those play action boots off, you know,
- 22:52Speaker 2: the successful run game. He's somebody that they really like
- 22:55Speaker 2: to throw to. I just think it's funny because, you know,
- 22:57Speaker 2: we're getting close to the trade deadline and people talk
- 23:01Speaker 2: about which is the Patriots trade for blah blah blah,
- 23:03Speaker 2: And I think there's this natural instinct. I don't blame
- 23:05Speaker 2: Patriots hands to this, but I think there's this natural
- 23:06Speaker 2: instinct after the last few years, well, they need a
- 23:08Speaker 2: wide receiver. They need a wide receiver. I don't know
- 23:11Speaker 2: that they do. I mean, long term, they need a
- 23:14Speaker 2: guy that can be at the top of the depth chart.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And I think Stefan Diggs has been fantastic, but he's
- 23:20Speaker 2: thirty two years old and you want to get the
- 23:21Speaker 2: guy that's going to come in and grow with Drake May.
- 23:23Speaker 2: So that's a you're not doing that at the trade deadline.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Right This is a pretty complete room right now. You know,
- 23:30Speaker 2: Kaisehan Boody's handling the exposition very well. They've it really
- 23:34Speaker 2: seems like now full time move digs into that Julian
- 23:36Speaker 2: Edelman role. He's running a little bit differently. There's some
- 23:39Speaker 2: deeper concepts in there, and then Mac Hollins and Pop
- 23:43Speaker 2: Douglas I feel like are in very specialized roles. Oh
- 23:45Speaker 2: and by the way, they have a top one hundred
- 23:47Speaker 2: pick they haven't really even used yet in Kyle Williams,
- 23:50Speaker 2: so there's still room to grow here. I think even
- 23:54Speaker 2: it's it's been really impressive, especially Digs and Booty Digs
- 23:57Speaker 2: coming off the injury, playing the way he is, booty
- 24:00Speaker 2: consistency that he's found in his game. I think it's
- 24:03Speaker 2: twelve catches in a row now have gone for first downs.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Just unbelievable stuff from him.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's not you know, obviously Diggs has been
- 24:12Speaker 4: more in that volume role that Ze's receiver role, and
- 24:15Speaker 4: they're using him on a lot of different things that
- 24:17Speaker 4: are Edelman esque. Like you said, it's you can literally
- 24:21Speaker 4: go back and I have on Twitter a couple of
- 24:24Speaker 4: times to like Edelman circa twenty eighteen nineteen and showed
- 24:28Speaker 4: the same concept of Edelman running the route that Diggs
- 24:31Speaker 4: is then running on Sundays now.
- 24:33Speaker 3: So there's a lot of examples of that.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Now, Edelman wasn't isolating on the backside and catching go
- 24:40Speaker 4: routes for you know, eighteen yards right like that. That
- 24:43Speaker 4: wasn't going to be part of his game. But they
- 24:46Speaker 4: do have a lot of you know, Diggs elements that
- 24:48Speaker 4: are Eleement elements as well, or were Edelman elements. And
- 24:52Speaker 4: then Booty, even though it's not a high volume, is
- 24:55Speaker 4: just once a game he's getting behind the defense and
- 24:58Speaker 4: catching a bomb from Drake may So that's just enough,
- 25:01Speaker 4: you know, if you catch, you know, keep catching twenty
- 25:04Speaker 4: plus yard chunks down the field like he has the
- 25:06Speaker 4: last couple of weeks. The production is more than enough there.
- 25:11Speaker 4: It's been a fun watch to see them kind of
- 25:15Speaker 4: grow and I think so much of this comes from
- 25:18Speaker 4: Stefan Diggs, I really do on and off the field.
- 25:21Speaker 4: I think his confidence, his leadership, his energy, has got
- 25:26Speaker 4: that room believing that they can make plays, and has
- 25:29Speaker 4: that room at a very very good temperament as well.
- 25:34Speaker 4: It's a selfish position, and I think this room is unselfish.
- 25:37Speaker 4: They understand that the ball is going to get spread
- 25:40Speaker 4: around some weeks. It's going to be a big week
- 25:42Speaker 4: for them some weeks.
- 25:43Speaker 3: It's not.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Really.
- 25:44Speaker 4: The only guy that's held consistent in terms of like
- 25:47Speaker 4: target share is Dicks. Like everybody else is going to
- 25:50Speaker 4: have their peaks and valleys of games where they're getting
- 25:53Speaker 4: targeted more or less than others. They're doing dirty work.
- 25:57Speaker 4: And I mentioned Hollins with the blocking. They're doing some
- 26:00Speaker 4: of that stuff as well. It's been a real big
- 26:04Speaker 4: time growth out of that entire room. And I give
- 26:07Speaker 4: a lot of that credit to Todd Downing. I give
- 26:09Speaker 4: a lot of that credit to Diggs. I think Diggs
- 26:11Speaker 4: is really taken on in this last chapter of his career.
- 26:17Speaker 4: He's become a real captain like leader both in Houston
- 26:22Speaker 4: and here. He was the same exact guy in Houston.
- 26:25Speaker 4: According to a lot of you know, the Texans beat writers.
- 26:28Speaker 4: He was I think he was elected to captain if
- 26:30Speaker 4: I'm not mistaken for the Texans last year. So this
- 26:32Speaker 4: is not necessarily a new thing with Diggs, but he's
- 26:36Speaker 4: been phenomenal on and off the field. I want to
- 26:39Speaker 4: talk a little bit of defense in the good category,
- 26:41Speaker 4: and then we'll get to some of the bad stuff
- 26:43Speaker 4: as well from this game. On the good side, for
- 26:46Speaker 4: the defense after the first four drives, we're gonna do
- 26:49Speaker 4: this a lot. I feel like over the last couple
- 26:51Speaker 4: of weeks, at least first four drives thirteen points allowed,
- 26:56Speaker 4: four explosive plays, you know, plus one point three pa
- 27:00Speaker 4: per play. The rest of the game the drives five
- 27:04Speaker 4: through I think it was eight or nine zero points,
- 27:09Speaker 4: no explosive plays, negative point seventy nine epa per play
- 27:15Speaker 4: the Panthers. The Titans only had a thirty nine percent
- 27:18Speaker 4: success rate after the the first four drives of this game.
- 27:23Speaker 4: This is a trend. They are a slow starting defense,
- 27:26Speaker 4: they get beat by the script, then the game declares
- 27:30Speaker 4: or I think what's really happening is that the other
- 27:34Speaker 4: team kind of is running out of like the really
- 27:38Speaker 4: perfectly crafted plays and they're not playing offenses that have
- 27:42Speaker 4: this deep rollodecks or this deep library of plays every week.
- 27:47Speaker 4: So once Mike McCoy and Bo Hart agree got the
- 27:52Speaker 4: throwback play to DK out of their system, it was like,
- 27:55Speaker 4: well what else you got? And I think they kind
- 27:58Speaker 4: of looked around and the Titans in had anything else.
- 28:00Speaker 4: They kind of emptied the clip early on in this game,
- 28:03Speaker 4: they moved the ball to their credit, and the Patriots
- 28:06Speaker 4: have tightened up. So I have seen on film. You know,
- 28:10Speaker 4: they do get better as the game wears on. The
- 28:12Speaker 4: coverage improves as a result, the pass rush is improving.
- 28:17Speaker 4: The run defense is pretty steady throughout the entire game.
- 28:20Speaker 4: They have a good run defense. They're not giving up
- 28:22Speaker 4: much on the ground right from the beginning. But their
- 28:25Speaker 4: defense PostScript is a top ten, top ten defense in
- 28:30Speaker 4: the NFL. So I go back to this all the time,
- 28:33Speaker 4: like is this a problem, Like do we care that
- 28:37Speaker 4: their slow starting defense? I think the number one thing
- 28:41Speaker 4: is as long as they're not getting into big early
- 28:45Speaker 4: deficits because the offense is holding serve, then they're okay.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Now if they get into a game, and you know,
- 28:51Speaker 4: we were talking off the air a little bit about
- 28:53Speaker 4: this Tampa game coming up, not to look ahead but
- 28:56Speaker 4: if they get into a game against the Bucks and
- 28:58Speaker 4: the defense is given up, you know, a ton of
- 29:01Speaker 4: yards early on in the game, and the offense is
- 29:03Speaker 4: still trying to figure out Todd Bowles's defense and all
- 29:06Speaker 4: of a sudden you look up and it's seventeen to nothing. Right,
- 29:09Speaker 4: that's where it becomes a problem. But so far, and
- 29:11Speaker 4: maybe it's opponent driven, but so far that has not happened.
- 29:15Speaker 4: These slow starts really haven't burned them quite yet. Maybe
- 29:18Speaker 4: you could argue the Pittsburgh game it did, but outside
- 29:21Speaker 4: of that, it hasn't burned them. A one last stat
- 29:24Speaker 4: they've given up points on five of the seven opening
- 29:27Speaker 4: drives by the opponent. Now, they held the Titans in
- 29:31Speaker 4: the SATs bolt the field goals, but they're giving up
- 29:33Speaker 4: points at a pretty alarming rate on the opening drive.
- 29:36Speaker 4: So this is a defense that has a very distinct
- 29:40Speaker 4: split between the script and the nonscript. And I don't
- 29:44Speaker 4: know if I care yet we'll see it ends up
- 29:47Speaker 4: burning them. But their defense PostScript again was really good
- 29:51Speaker 4: this week.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Yeah, whatever it is, it's that first drive and then
- 29:56Speaker 2: they kind of settle in and maybe they just want
- 29:59Speaker 2: to see how the opponents can play like, credit to them,
- 30:00Speaker 2: They've made some really good adjustments. They're on both sides
- 30:03Speaker 2: of the ball. They're one of the best third quarter
- 30:05Speaker 2: teams in the NFL. Outside of Week one, they're outscoring
- 30:08Speaker 2: opponents thirty nine to thirteen in the third quarter. So,
- 30:12Speaker 2: you know, can they start making some of those adjustments
- 30:14Speaker 2: a little bit sooner?
- 30:15Speaker 6: Now?
- 30:15Speaker 2: You got to see it to adjust obviously, maybe that's
- 30:17Speaker 2: part of it, but you're right, like they're surviving it
- 30:19Speaker 2: right now. When you start facing some of these higher
- 30:21Speaker 2: powered offenses, which granted they don't see a lot of
- 30:23Speaker 2: the rest of the way, but it's good. It's gonna
- 30:25Speaker 2: be Tampa, They're gonna get Buffalo, Baltimore, of healthy Baltimore,
- 30:31Speaker 2: of healthy Cincinnati. Ish, we kind of saw things click
- 30:34Speaker 2: with Joe Flacco, yeah, the other night.
- 30:36Speaker 4: So you know, Atlanta has some wild home road splits
- 30:39Speaker 4: right now going on. But if you get the home
- 30:42Speaker 4: version of the Atlanta Falcons offense, that's a really talented group.
- 30:47Speaker 2: We also don't who their quarterback is gonna be. For that,
- 30:48Speaker 2: we don't Kirk Cousins not a bad backup, but we
- 30:50Speaker 2: don't know who their.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Quarterbacks right now.
- 30:51Speaker 4: I think they're averaging like twenty seven a game at
- 30:54Speaker 4: home in like ten or thirteen a game on the road,
- 30:57Speaker 4: like they have some crazy now they play it that
- 30:59Speaker 4: is a class NFC South don't team and in like
- 31:02Speaker 4: you know, just to unpackages. I know it's not Falcons week,
- 31:05Speaker 4: but the Atlanta plays in a dome, right, Like, they
- 31:08Speaker 4: play in a very cushingy environment down in Atlanta, and
- 31:11Speaker 4: it seems like every single time they go outside that
- 31:13Speaker 4: offense falls apart.
- 31:15Speaker 3: So so the Patriots have back to your.
- 31:17Speaker 4: Point, by the way, home games twenty thirty four, twenty four,
- 31:22Speaker 4: the road games twenty two, zero and ten.
- 31:25Speaker 2: But the twenty two was at Minnesota, right, So that's indoors.
- 31:30Speaker 2: So it's not home road splits. I'd call it indoor
- 31:33Speaker 2: outdoor splitz.
- 31:34Speaker 4: It could so's it's twenty six points per game at
- 31:37Speaker 4: home in ten points per game right now on the
- 31:40Speaker 4: road for the Falcons. I know this is not Falcons
- 31:42Speaker 4: on catch twenty to get right next week.
- 31:44Speaker 2: They play Miami this week, so that'll be a really
- 31:46Speaker 2: good data point because that team is terrible and falling
- 31:49Speaker 2: apart in real time. And if they can't put it
- 31:52Speaker 2: up on a Miami team whose coach seems to actively
- 31:54Speaker 2: be trying to get himself fired, and his quarterback actively
- 31:56Speaker 2: seems to be trying to get himself benched. That would
- 31:59Speaker 2: be reallytive that they just can't figure it out on
- 32:01Speaker 2: the road.
- 32:02Speaker 4: So the good just to summarize, Drake May the passer,
- 32:06Speaker 4: excellent run game, got better, good stuff, receiver room continues
- 32:11Speaker 4: to click, continues to shine. The defense in the second half,
- 32:15Speaker 4: if you want to call it that, you know, midway
- 32:17Speaker 4: through the second quarter. Really, and one last thing on
- 32:19Speaker 4: the defensive side that I just want to mention because
- 32:21Speaker 4: we haven't been doing three up, three down as much.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Kaylevon chase On is just on a heater. Yeah, the
- 32:26Speaker 4: last couple of weeks between New Orleans and Tennessee. I
- 32:29Speaker 4: have him with twelve quarterback pressures over the last two weeks,
- 32:33Speaker 4: two sacks this week obviously had the fumble recovery touchdown
- 32:36Speaker 4: as well where he gets off the block there and
- 32:39Speaker 4: is able to disrupt the play from cam Ward. So
- 32:43Speaker 4: really a good performance so far. I think, you know,
- 32:46Speaker 4: last couple of weeks from Kaylevon Chase On, and he's
- 32:49Speaker 4: having a little bit of a heater here too, So
- 32:52Speaker 4: I just wanted to mention that going over to the bats.
- 32:56Speaker 4: I'm interested to hear what you think about this, because
- 32:58Speaker 4: we've talked briefly about it, but not a ton. Yeah,
- 33:01Speaker 4: and I am definitely in the school of thought, you know,
- 33:05Speaker 4: just to nitpick Drake a little bit, and I want
- 33:08Speaker 4: to caveat this with like we're talking about them being
- 33:13Speaker 4: a playoff team potentially here, Yeah, so this is not
- 33:16Speaker 4: like this is so bad that.
- 33:17Speaker 2: This is this is not is he going to be
- 33:20Speaker 2: the guy talk? This is like how do we moved
- 33:22Speaker 2: on from that to like what do they need to
- 33:24Speaker 2: do to be the best team they can be?
- 33:25Speaker 4: Talk exactly, And I would also add to that they
- 33:30Speaker 4: are only going to be good if Drake May is healthy.
- 33:33Speaker 4: So in this game I did not love most I
- 33:38Speaker 4: would say not most. Like three or four of his
- 33:41Speaker 4: scramble decisions in this game I thought were bad decisions
- 33:45Speaker 4: by him, you know, coming off first reads quickly, leaving
- 33:50Speaker 4: clean pockets. You know there's open receivers down the field.
- 33:53Speaker 4: A couple of times I thought in the red zone scramble,
- 33:56Speaker 4: he has Hunter Henry just sitting on the goal line
- 33:59Speaker 4: with the clear window. And if you're Drake May, like
- 34:02Speaker 4: you trust your six foot five tight end to just
- 34:05Speaker 4: box out there and make a play on the ball.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Uh.
- 34:08Speaker 4: He had Remondre Stevenson on the back side of a
- 34:10Speaker 4: concept on another scrambled where he gets tackled in bounds
- 34:14Speaker 4: and takes a hit. Obviously, he goes out of this
- 34:16Speaker 4: game for three plays with the head injury. This is
- 34:19Speaker 4: not We know Drake May can run, and I'm not
- 34:22Speaker 4: trying to put him in a box where it's only
- 34:26Speaker 4: played from the pocket and take away that superpower. But
- 34:29Speaker 4: you need to if you're Drake May, in my opinion,
- 34:32Speaker 4: you need to know when you need to put the
- 34:34Speaker 4: cape on and when you don't. And when you're playing
- 34:36Speaker 4: the Titans in week seven and you're blowing them out.
- 34:40Speaker 4: I don't need you to run right like just And
- 34:43Speaker 4: I get it he got hurt. It was still a
- 34:45Speaker 4: one score game. Technically they weren't in blowout territory yet.
- 34:49Speaker 4: But he needs to kind of pick his spots a
- 34:52Speaker 4: little bit better with this. And I know there's a
- 34:54Speaker 4: lot of conversations about sliding. I'm gonna give him some
- 34:59Speaker 4: grace on the sliding thing because I think it's so
- 35:01Speaker 4: much easier said than done to tell him he's.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Been better about giving himself up even if it's not
- 35:06Speaker 2: a slide.
- 35:07Speaker 4: You're you're asking him, you know, to make these slide decisions.
- 35:12Speaker 4: And it's so easy, I think, to sit here on
- 35:15Speaker 4: a podcast and tell him to slide. Like it's actually
- 35:18Speaker 4: like kind of starting to annoy me how much people
- 35:21Speaker 4: are talking about that, because it's everyone thinks that the
- 35:23Speaker 4: slide is just this like you're all to everything when
- 35:27Speaker 4: it comes to quarterbacks running.
- 35:28Speaker 2: It's just protect yourself, right, And there's a number of
- 35:31Speaker 2: ways he can do that, and he's been better about it.
- 35:33Speaker 2: At times. It got away from him a little bit
- 35:36Speaker 2: in this game and the running more too. I think
- 35:37Speaker 2: he just maybe got in a rhythm and you know,
- 35:42Speaker 2: kind of fell out of some habits. Yeah, and he'd
- 35:44Speaker 2: been much better about this this year. If you watch
- 35:47Speaker 2: the play where he gets pulled, So what happens. There
- 35:51Speaker 2: one thing that they teach the or not teach, but
- 35:56Speaker 2: like one thing that the concussion spotters are trained to
- 35:58Speaker 2: look for when a guy gets after getting hit in
- 36:01Speaker 2: the head or I think just gets up in general,
- 36:03Speaker 2: if he does the quick little headshake, yeah, which you
- 36:05Speaker 2: see Drake do there, Like that is they're really looking
- 36:09Speaker 2: for that. That's been kind of shown to be a
- 36:11Speaker 2: potential symptom of a concussion, and they're gonna come get you.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Now in that instance, I think the reason Drake does it,
- 36:18Speaker 2: if you go back and look, his chin strap gets
- 36:20Speaker 2: pulled up to his nose and I think he's trying
- 36:22Speaker 2: to shake his helmet back down. Yeah, but the spotter doesn't.
- 36:25Speaker 2: In real time, the spotter sees you shake your head,
- 36:27Speaker 2: he's gonna come get you. So I don't think they
- 36:30Speaker 2: were wrong for pulling him hopefully, like just I think
- 36:33Speaker 2: in maybe a good wake up call for Drake because
- 36:35Speaker 2: if you go back and watch, and I posted both
- 36:37Speaker 2: these plays on Twitter side by side, if you go
- 36:40Speaker 2: back and watch his next scramble, which is later that
- 36:42Speaker 2: quarter after he comes back in the game, I think
- 36:44Speaker 2: it was the next drive. It was next drive because
- 36:46Speaker 2: they scored like right away. Once he came back in
- 36:48Speaker 2: the game. He gets it's this. It's a very similar
- 36:52Speaker 2: tackle where he gets kind of caught from behind and
- 36:54Speaker 2: starts to get pulled down. And I don't know exactly
- 36:57Speaker 2: what he's doing, but just looking at it, there seems
- 37:00Speaker 2: to be a much more concerted effort on his part.
- 37:04Speaker 2: So the on the one where he hits his head
- 37:06Speaker 2: he's fighting the tackle and he's trying to use his
- 37:09Speaker 2: momentum to push forward and get the extra yard or two,
- 37:11Speaker 2: which you teach running backs to do. You don't need
- 37:14Speaker 2: your quarterback doing it, but most ball carriers that's what
- 37:16Speaker 2: you do, right. You want to win the tackle. And
- 37:18Speaker 2: he does that. On the first one, he kind of
- 37:19Speaker 2: fights the tackle. It results in him kind of whipping
- 37:21Speaker 2: his head back. The second one he makes a much
- 37:25Speaker 2: more concerted effort instead of fighting for the extra yard
- 37:27Speaker 2: or two to keep his shoulders up. Because when you
- 37:30Speaker 2: keep your shoulders up and you hit the ground with
- 37:32Speaker 2: the lower your back instead of the upper your back, well,
- 37:36Speaker 2: now your head's not going to snap back and hit
- 37:38Speaker 2: the turf. And the price of it is you maybe
- 37:41Speaker 2: lose a yard or two because you're not fighting the tackle.
- 37:44Speaker 2: I don't mind. You know, it's not the fourth quarter
- 37:46Speaker 2: of the Super Bowl and you gotta have it. That
- 37:48Speaker 2: might be a different, you know, different conversation, but in
- 37:53Speaker 2: this in this setting, yeah, keep your head up, don't
- 37:57Speaker 2: fight the tackle as much. Tom Brady turned this into
- 37:59Speaker 2: an R four late in his career, and he wasn't
- 38:02Speaker 2: so much when he was scrambling, but even in the pocket,
- 38:05Speaker 2: knowing one just avoiding getting hit, and two when he
- 38:08Speaker 2: got hit, learning how to fall, how to roll with
- 38:10Speaker 2: the contact, all of that. So he fell in the
- 38:12Speaker 2: way that he wanted to fall. So is his throwing
- 38:15Speaker 2: arm wasn't at risk, his head wasn't a risk hitting
- 38:17Speaker 2: the ground anything like that. It's just one example, but
- 38:20Speaker 2: you know it's one that I look at, and you know,
- 38:22Speaker 2: if I'm in the room, I'm pointing at like all right,
- 38:25Speaker 2: like that's it, all right? He learned, like he he
- 38:28Speaker 2: fixed it the next time out. So I think running
- 38:30Speaker 2: a little less overall seven scramble is a bit much,
- 38:32Speaker 2: especially a game like that. But when he's gonna run,
- 38:35Speaker 2: knowing how to protect himself. And again it's not always sliding,
- 38:37Speaker 2: it's getting out of bounds or giving yourself up or
- 38:40Speaker 2: even when you get hit, knowing how to roll with
- 38:43Speaker 2: the hit, so you're not putting certain parts of your
- 38:45Speaker 2: product body in arms way. It's football, it's physically you're
- 38:47Speaker 2: gonna get knocked around a little bit. But again, if
- 38:50Speaker 2: you land a little weird on your non throwing shoulder
- 38:53Speaker 2: and it protects your head and it costs you a
- 38:56Speaker 2: yard or two, you take that trade off.
- 38:58Speaker 3: He's gonna get hurt playing this.
- 39:00Speaker 4: If he plays like he did on Sunday again, and
- 39:03Speaker 4: he keeps doing that again and again, he's gonna get hurt.
- 39:06Speaker 4: And they cannot afford for him to get hurt. So like,
- 39:10Speaker 4: this is not I understand. And I've I've in the.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Past, well he wanted a quarterback like Josh Allen Evan
- 39:17Speaker 2: welcome to the Josh Allen experience.
- 39:19Speaker 4: But and I've said in the past that I'm not
- 39:21Speaker 4: I don't want to take away his superpower and I don't,
- 39:24Speaker 4: but there's a difference between him extending plays in him scrambling.
- 39:28Speaker 4: So I it just he can't play like this, And
- 39:32Speaker 4: I think the most important thing is is that he
- 39:34Speaker 4: doesn't have to play like this. And if I'm if,
- 39:37Speaker 4: I'm Josh McDaniels and I'm Mike Rabel, My what I'm
- 39:41Speaker 4: telling him after this game isn't necessarily don't run, it's
- 39:46Speaker 4: you don't need to run in this spot, right like
- 39:50Speaker 4: when we play Buffalo at the end of the year.
- 39:53Speaker 4: And let's just say, because we're dreaming right now, the
- 39:57Speaker 4: game is for the division and it's then it's you know,
- 40:02Speaker 4: all bets are off, Just do what you gotta do
- 40:04Speaker 4: to win the game. But against these types of teams
- 40:08Speaker 4: in the middle of the football season, when there's not
- 40:11Speaker 4: the stakes are not quite as high that he just
- 40:14Speaker 4: has to learn when is it it's important enough to
- 40:18Speaker 4: try to take off, try to break tackles, to your point.
- 40:20Speaker 2: So that's what I think. It's not like, yeah, there's
- 40:24Speaker 2: definitely times where he can stay a passer before becoming
- 40:26Speaker 2: a runner. But I think the bigger point is even
- 40:28Speaker 2: went because he's gonna run, there are gonna be times
- 40:30Speaker 2: he's gonna run. Being better at protecting himself, which he
- 40:34Speaker 2: had been Like this game felt like a little bit
- 40:36Speaker 2: of a step back in that regard being better at
- 40:39Speaker 2: protecting yourself well you're running, uh, and how to take
- 40:44Speaker 2: hits and things like that I think is important.
- 40:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I just I keep going back to the fact
- 40:49Speaker 4: that I just feel like he didn't have to scramble
- 40:51Speaker 4: seven times against the Tennessee Titans. And I know that
- 40:54Speaker 4: might be disrespectful to the Titans, but that's the spot
- 40:57Speaker 4: that we're in with them. And you know, lastly, just
- 41:00Speaker 4: on a quarterback level, like I would just and I'm
- 41:03Speaker 4: not saying that he's like a one read and go
- 41:05Speaker 4: kind of guy. I'm not trying to put that out there,
- 41:07Speaker 4: but he is right now maybe being a little bit
- 41:11Speaker 4: more front side backside of concepts, Like he's not necessarily
- 41:15Speaker 4: progressing full field through the concept. So I see on
- 41:19Speaker 4: tape a couple of times a game where he's one
- 41:23Speaker 4: to two on the front side or whichever side he
- 41:25Speaker 4: decides to read the field on. But he's not going
- 41:28Speaker 4: all the way from right to left or left to right.
- 41:31Speaker 4: So if he stays in the pocket a little bit
- 41:33Speaker 4: longer and we can come off the front side of
- 41:35Speaker 4: a concept and get to the backside, that's when, you know,
- 41:39Speaker 4: I think that he can kind of eliminate a few
- 41:42Speaker 4: of these scrambles per game and maybe keep himself a
- 41:45Speaker 4: little bit healthier, you know, self preservation. So that's all
- 41:49Speaker 4: it is. It's self preservation. You just want to see
- 41:51Speaker 4: him on the field. You hate seeing him have to
- 41:54Speaker 4: get pulled from the game for any reason other than it's.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Garbage time and they're up by three touchdowns.
- 42:00Speaker 3: So that was just that the defense thing.
- 42:05Speaker 4: Actually, let's stick with the offense and then we'll talk
- 42:07Speaker 4: about will unpack the defense. Yeah, offensively, we talked a
- 42:10Speaker 4: little bit about this last week, mostly with the run
- 42:13Speaker 4: game this week. It was more pass protection than it
- 42:15Speaker 4: was run game. But there are some cracks in the
- 42:19Speaker 4: foundation that are starting to show a little bit with
- 42:22Speaker 4: this offensive line, and it's mainly inside. I would say,
- 42:26Speaker 4: you know, Campbell's gonna have one or two rookie moments
- 42:29Speaker 4: a game. He had one blitz that came off his
- 42:32Speaker 4: edge that resulted in a quarterback hit. I would much
- 42:35Speaker 4: rather be talking about Campbell making mental errors in physical errors,
- 42:40Speaker 4: like he'll learn from those ones. I'm not too worried
- 42:42Speaker 4: about Campbell. Moses was really good in this game. I
- 42:45Speaker 4: thought he was the best lineman, especially maybe one of
- 42:48Speaker 4: his best games.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Of the year.
- 42:49Speaker 4: On Wenu still has some reps that for an eighteen
- 42:52Speaker 4: million dollar guard, I wish that he was a little
- 42:54Speaker 4: bit better, but has been solid on the most part.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Bradbury and Jared Wilson right now are having a tough time,
- 43:03Speaker 4: and I talked about Jared Wilson last week before this week.
- 43:06Speaker 4: This has been brewing for a while now. I don't
- 43:10Speaker 4: know if they'll make any changes personnel wise. I know
- 43:13Speaker 4: a lot of people want to see Bradberry to the bench,
- 43:17Speaker 4: Wilson to center, Ben Brown to left guard, I'm not
- 43:20Speaker 4: messing with the center quarterback exchange. Right now, Drake May
- 43:23Speaker 4: is dealing. He's playing like an MVP candidate. One of
- 43:27Speaker 4: the worst things that you could do is start pulling
- 43:29Speaker 4: Janga pieces out of the offensive line. Because now we've
- 43:32Speaker 4: talked about this in the past, Alex, you're changing two positions, right,
- 43:36Speaker 4: It's not one position you're changing, You're changing two positions.
- 43:39Speaker 4: That center quarterback exchange. The communication between those two guys
- 43:44Speaker 4: is so important. I think Bradberry's veteran experience is enough
- 43:47Speaker 4: to keep him in the lineup right now, Jared Wilson
- 43:50Speaker 4: for Ben Brown to me is starting to become a
- 43:52Speaker 4: little bit of a conversation. And this is where Mike
- 43:55Speaker 4: Rabel has a really tough job because they are five
- 43:58Speaker 4: and two. They are pushing to win the division, but
- 44:01Speaker 4: they also have a bigger picture of a long term
- 44:04Speaker 4: view here where if you develop Jared Wilson and you
- 44:08Speaker 4: stick with him and he gets better, does that long
- 44:12Speaker 4: term pay dividends for your offensive line. So it's hard.
- 44:17Speaker 4: It's a hard spot to be in. But pass protection wise,
- 44:21Speaker 4: I know that their numbers from an analytics standpoint are
- 44:24Speaker 4: really really good. I have not felt like that has
- 44:28Speaker 4: lined up with the eye test all the time with
- 44:31Speaker 4: some of these numbers, and I've kind of come to
- 44:33Speaker 4: the conclusion that I think a big reason why is
- 44:36Speaker 4: because of the scheme and because of Drake May. Like
- 44:39Speaker 4: Drake May is still performing at such a high level
- 44:42Speaker 4: under pressure, and Josh McDaniels is doing a lot of
- 44:45Speaker 4: things to help the offensive line that it's covering up
- 44:48Speaker 4: some of the week. And that's great, like that's what
- 44:50Speaker 4: good quarterbacks and good play callers do, right, But we're
- 44:53Speaker 4: starting to see a little bit more bumps in the
- 44:56Speaker 4: road here for this offensive line. Where do you stand
- 44:58Speaker 4: with that group? Where do you stand with Jared Wilson.
- 45:01Speaker 4: I had him with two and a half sacks allowed
- 45:04Speaker 4: in this game, and it was coming off a game
- 45:07Speaker 4: last week that I thought was a little bit subpar
- 45:09Speaker 4: as well.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I do think you're right. It's a
- 45:13Speaker 2: tough spot because they're five and two, they're rolling, and
- 45:15Speaker 2: there's also an element of, you know, these five guys
- 45:19Speaker 2: have worked together for most of the season. Ben Brown
- 45:21Speaker 2: did a good job when he was filling in, but
- 45:23Speaker 2: these five guys have been working together. They have chemistry,
- 45:25Speaker 2: and you know, does it become a house of cards
- 45:27Speaker 2: if you start pulling pieces here and there. But it's
- 45:32Speaker 2: you can't have your quarterback taking blindside shots either, which
- 45:35Speaker 2: you know whether you want to put that on on
- 45:39Speaker 2: on Wilson or Campbell. The reality is the two rookies
- 45:42Speaker 2: missed the line game. Yeah, and that's what we talked
- 45:44Speaker 2: about the beginning of the year. Having two rookies on
- 45:46Speaker 2: that left side. You'd hope Ben Brown, with a little
- 45:48Speaker 2: more experience, would help with that. So I still feel
- 45:50Speaker 2: like overall it's a representative group. We knew it was
- 45:53Speaker 2: going to be more than one year, and putting it
- 45:55Speaker 2: back together to come from where they were last year
- 45:58Speaker 2: to now is tremendous strides. But kind of like we
- 46:00Speaker 2: just did with Drake May, like we didn't go through
- 46:02Speaker 2: all that nitpicking Drake May because whether or not he's
- 46:05Speaker 2: going to be the guy we're talking about, how can
- 46:06Speaker 2: this team be the best version of themselves they can
- 46:08Speaker 2: be to make a run. What's you know, what's the
- 46:11Speaker 2: best version of this team to make a run. The
- 46:13Speaker 2: other thing is if you do pull Jared Wilson, I've
- 46:16Speaker 2: said all along, I think his long term position is
- 46:18Speaker 2: center agreed. You can have him start working on that now.
- 46:21Speaker 2: So maybe you know, you don't want to make the
- 46:23Speaker 2: change with Garrett Bradbury now, but if you need to
- 46:25Speaker 2: get to that point he started twenty twenty six or
- 46:28Speaker 2: it's twenty six, like he kind of hits the ground running,
- 46:30Speaker 2: So you know, I go back and forth on it.
- 46:34Speaker 2: It'll be interesting to see what Cleveland does this week
- 46:38Speaker 2: because Miles Garrett can line up wherever, and I'm sure
- 46:40Speaker 2: they're gonna run him plenty against Will Campbell, but he
- 46:43Speaker 2: can line up inside too, And do they look at
- 46:45Speaker 2: a rookie guard who's playing out of position, who's struggling
- 46:48Speaker 2: a little bit and say we want to hunt that matchup.
- 46:50Speaker 4: So I think that's the biggest thing to me when
- 46:52Speaker 4: I watch Jared Wilson is you know, it's much easier
- 46:56Speaker 4: to play center as a little bit more undersize, like
- 46:59Speaker 4: we saw, you know, with David Andrews for a long time.
- 47:02Speaker 4: But David Andrews not a big guy as in terms
- 47:05Speaker 4: of relatively speaking for offensive lineman. Garrett Bradberry is not
- 47:09Speaker 4: a big guy, you know, relatively speaking, But at center
- 47:13Speaker 4: you can get away with being a little bit undersized.
- 47:15Speaker 4: Once you move out to guard, though, being a little
- 47:18Speaker 4: bit undersized can can come back to Hanji a little
- 47:21Speaker 4: bit more. And with Jared Wilson, I just see, you know,
- 47:24Speaker 4: the power, the play strength, the ability to anchor at
- 47:27Speaker 4: the point of attack. Like those types of things I
- 47:30Speaker 4: think are the biggest things that are giving him problems
- 47:32Speaker 4: right now. The other thing that gives him a little
- 47:34Speaker 4: bit of problem is he loves to two hand punch,
- 47:37Speaker 4: which when you get two hand punchers, the like the
- 47:42Speaker 4: combat that as a pass rusher, you usually see a
- 47:45Speaker 4: lot of swipes right hand swipes, so like he's gonna
- 47:48Speaker 4: fire his hands and then the tackle's gonna swipe his
- 47:51Speaker 4: hands away and then they are just blowbys because he
- 47:54Speaker 4: gets over extended and then now he's off balance and
- 47:57Speaker 4: he's coming forward. So he saw that on one of
- 48:00Speaker 4: the sacks that he gave up in this game to
- 48:03Speaker 4: Defandre Sweat. You know, he just comes out and he's
- 48:05Speaker 4: in a play action set and he just kind of
- 48:07Speaker 4: comes out of the blocks and tries to throw two
- 48:10Speaker 4: hands into his chest. Sweat just swats the hands out
- 48:13Speaker 4: of the way, and Jared Wilson is now he's you know,
- 48:16Speaker 4: leaning forward, he's off balance and sweats by him. So
- 48:19Speaker 4: you're seeing a couple of those a game as well.
- 48:22Speaker 4: I'm not ready.
- 48:23Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 48:24Speaker 4: I go back and forth on it too, because I
- 48:26Speaker 4: think there is an element of Ben Brown that could
- 48:28Speaker 4: be a little bit more steady at that position, and
- 48:30Speaker 4: I like his size at that position, but I also
- 48:35Speaker 4: see the long term of it. I just wonder if
- 48:37Speaker 4: the long term of it even matters, because if it's
- 48:39Speaker 4: not on the left side, like if he's not going
- 48:41Speaker 4: to be next to Campbell for the next ten years,
- 48:44Speaker 4: then like what like I get, you know, we're still
- 48:46Speaker 4: getting reps in games, and that's valuable, But if he's
- 48:49Speaker 4: going to be at center, it's not like he's building
- 48:51Speaker 4: all this chemistry with Will Campbell for the next five
- 48:54Speaker 4: to ten years, right, you know, he's not going to
- 48:56Speaker 4: be in that spot. So it's something to talk about,
- 48:59Speaker 4: something to think about. Let's move over to the defense.
- 49:03Speaker 4: Let's talk a little bit about the script again. But
- 49:05Speaker 4: I do want to talk even more about the man
- 49:08Speaker 4: coverage stuff with the script. I do think there's an
- 49:13Speaker 4: element of them playing some more vanilla coverage early in games,
- 49:17Speaker 4: some based defense or their kind of base install defense.
- 49:21Speaker 4: So I do think there's some cat and mouse going on,
- 49:24Speaker 4: like let's just let the fancy offensive coordinator on the
- 49:27Speaker 4: other side, he's got to all these plays that he's
- 49:30Speaker 4: practiced all week. Let's just let him get it out
- 49:32Speaker 4: of his system, and then we'll see what happens right right,
- 49:35Speaker 4: and then we'll start to draw it up and we'll
- 49:36Speaker 4: start to dial it up. There is that element of
- 49:39Speaker 4: it with the man coverage stuff. I think this is
- 49:42Speaker 4: actually more important in a lot of ways in the script.
- 49:45Speaker 4: The Patriots right now are dead last in the league
- 49:48Speaker 4: and EPA and man coverage. That should not be the case.
- 49:50Speaker 4: They have too many good corners for them to be
- 49:53Speaker 4: near the bottom of the league in man coverage, especially
- 49:56Speaker 4: corners that excel in man, like in Zales and Davis
- 49:58Speaker 4: and Marcus Jones. So when I watch it, and this
- 50:03Speaker 4: is just my opinion, I think that this staff needs
- 50:06Speaker 4: to adjust how they are playing man coverage. So they're
- 50:09Speaker 4: playing a lot of man free, which is six man
- 50:11Speaker 4: coverage is the single high safety in the deep middle
- 50:14Speaker 4: of the field.
- 50:14Speaker 3: There's no second level help.
- 50:16Speaker 4: So what they're getting beat on, in my opinion, is
- 50:19Speaker 4: a lot of like inbreaking routes into the middle of
- 50:21Speaker 4: the field slants. You know, we saw Christian Gonzalez get
- 50:25Speaker 4: beat by Van Jefferson on like a five step slant.
- 50:28Speaker 4: We saw Carlton Davis the week before get beat on
- 50:31Speaker 4: a slant by Rashid Shahead in a similar coverage, similar spot.
- 50:36Speaker 4: We saw the deep post to to DK on Marcus Jones. Like,
- 50:42Speaker 4: that's another one of those where he's got to think
- 50:44Speaker 4: about so much because he's only has help in the
- 50:46Speaker 4: middle of the field, So he's thinking is he breaking in?
- 50:50Speaker 3: Is he breaking out? Like is he running by me?
- 50:52Speaker 4: Like there's a lot of different things, And when you
- 50:55Speaker 4: know the Patriots are in their heyday with man coverage,
- 50:57Speaker 4: you know, eighteen twenty nineteen, I learned a lot about
- 51:02Speaker 4: not only scheme, but how to play man coverage from
- 51:04Speaker 4: a corner perspective from Stefan Gilmore, And he talked a
- 51:08Speaker 4: lot about being able to eliminate routes based off of
- 51:12Speaker 4: where his help was, So he knew going into it
- 51:16Speaker 4: that like, there's only three kind of routes that this
- 51:20Speaker 4: receiver is going to run from this alignment, and I
- 51:22Speaker 4: have help on the post, and then I have a
- 51:24Speaker 4: robber in the middle of the field as well, So
- 51:26Speaker 4: I only really need to think about one route, right
- 51:29Speaker 4: and that makes it so much easier from a simplification
- 51:32Speaker 4: standpoint to play man to man, and this staff to me,
- 51:37Speaker 4: you know, they played a lot of zone in Tennessee.
- 51:39Speaker 3: Maybe that's part of it. Maybe they're really more.
- 51:41Speaker 4: Of a zone staff and haven't really been well schooled
- 51:45Speaker 4: on the man to man coverage stuff. The Patriots in
- 51:47Speaker 4: their prime and Manton man coverage are playing a lot
- 51:49Speaker 4: of robber They're cutting crossing routes. They're putting, you know,
- 51:53Speaker 4: safety help at both the second and third level of
- 51:56Speaker 4: the defense, and they were just kind of loading up
- 51:58Speaker 4: with safety help and get those corners as much help
- 52:01Speaker 4: as they possibly could. There's too much space in the
- 52:04Speaker 4: middle of the field. If Christian Gonzalez is getting bet
- 52:07Speaker 4: on it, then it's too much space. Like that's a
- 52:09Speaker 4: scheme problem, it's not a personnel problem. There's too much
- 52:12Speaker 4: space in the middle of the field. I would take
- 52:15Speaker 4: the rusher out of the cut you know, it's a
- 52:17Speaker 4: trade off. Right now, they're putting the extra guy in
- 52:20Speaker 4: the pass rush. So if you're gonna take the guy
- 52:22Speaker 4: out of the pass rush and put him in coverage,
- 52:24Speaker 4: now you're only gonna have four man pass rush instead
- 52:26Speaker 4: of five man pass rush. That's the you know, the
- 52:29Speaker 4: trade off or the decision they have to make.
- 52:31Speaker 3: But I would do it.
- 52:32Speaker 4: I would play a lot more you know, robber coverage,
- 52:36Speaker 4: a lot more cut coverage where there's a second level
- 52:38Speaker 4: help defender and trying to eliminate some of these rats
- 52:42Speaker 4: from the tree. For these corners, they should not be
- 52:45Speaker 4: a bad man coverage defense. And until that gets fixed,
- 52:49Speaker 4: I don't think their pass defense is gonna get fixed.
- 52:51Speaker 2: Now.
- 52:51Speaker 4: You could also say that they could shadow a little
- 52:54Speaker 4: bit more. I think that's true, but when you're playing
- 52:57Speaker 4: against a team like the Titans, like who is Gonzal
- 53:00Speaker 4: supposed to travel with? When Calvin Ridley is not playing right?
- 53:02Speaker 4: So it's not I don't think that they've done it
- 53:05Speaker 4: because they haven't played a guy to that caliber that
- 53:08Speaker 4: is worthy of traveling with. So maybe that changes over
- 53:11Speaker 4: the next couple of weeks, Like maybe he travels with
- 53:13Speaker 4: Jerry Judy on Sunday, who is a decent player. Maybe
- 53:16Speaker 4: he travels with Drake London the following week. Mike Evans
- 53:20Speaker 4: is now hurt. Maybe it's a Mecca Abuka, you know,
- 53:22Speaker 4: gets the travel treatment the following week. So that's another
- 53:26Speaker 4: way that you can kind of simplify things from man
- 53:28Speaker 4: coverage is just say, hey, just study this, like this
- 53:31Speaker 4: is the one that you got this guy, just study him.
- 53:34Speaker 4: That's another way to simplify it. So I think they
- 53:36Speaker 4: need to simplify the responsibilities of the corners to get
- 53:40Speaker 4: them to be better at man coverage, both with help
- 53:43Speaker 4: and with assignments. And then they will because this is
- 53:46Speaker 4: not sustainable, Like they shouldn't be this bad at man coverage.
- 53:50Speaker 4: And I put a lot of that on the scheme
- 53:51Speaker 4: and on the coaching to improve how they're drawing it up.
- 53:55Speaker 3: Is there anything else on the defensive side that you
- 53:57Speaker 3: want to know?
- 54:00Speaker 2: Those are all good points. The other thing is they
- 54:01Speaker 2: continue and this is a much more simplistic view, So
- 54:03Speaker 2: I apologize, but they continue to get beat by the
- 54:06Speaker 2: speed guys. They continue to have trouble with straight line speed.
- 54:09Speaker 2: And you know Tremary DK gets some They're gonna face
- 54:12Speaker 2: some of these guys wound my blanket on the Falcons,
- 54:17Speaker 2: like speed slot.
- 54:19Speaker 3: Darnell Mooney.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Darn it, they're gonna get Darnell Mooney. You know Tampa
- 54:23Speaker 2: has some speed. Obviously they'll get Buffalo again. They'll get
- 54:26Speaker 2: Khalil Shakira again. They got to be better about that.
- 54:28Speaker 2: I know there's been some rumblings about, like them maybe
- 54:30Speaker 2: looking for a corner at the trade deadline. I don't think,
- 54:34Speaker 2: you know, I think.
- 54:35Speaker 3: I don't think it's personnel. I really don't.
- 54:37Speaker 2: I don't, And I think people have been a little
- 54:40Speaker 2: too hard on Carlton Davis. He did have one really
- 54:42Speaker 2: bad rap in that game where he fell over, but
- 54:43Speaker 2: he's been solid. They don't need a guy that's gonna
- 54:46Speaker 2: come in and reset the depth chart. I know people
- 54:48Speaker 2: pointed out Steph Gilmore. Look, I'm not gonna say to
- 54:50Speaker 2: Steph know, to Steph Gilmore on the football team, because
- 54:53Speaker 2: I think he's such an elite mental player. Just getting
- 54:55Speaker 2: him in a room with some of these younger corners
- 54:57Speaker 2: alone would be worth a roster spot, whatever his role is.
- 55:00Speaker 2: But going to find a matchup speed guy that can
- 55:04Speaker 2: maybe help alongside.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Like isn't that supposed to be Marcus Jones?
- 55:08Speaker 4: And like again, like I and I know that I
- 55:11Speaker 4: tend to err on this side of the street most
- 55:13Speaker 4: of the time, but I just remember watching this defense
- 55:18Speaker 4: and when Bill Belichick really pivoted to man to man coverage,
- 55:22Speaker 4: like the way that they supported their you know man coverage,
- 55:27Speaker 4: the primary man coverage defender. They call it divider leverage.
- 55:32Speaker 4: It's I if I had a whiteboard, I'd probably be
- 55:34Speaker 4: able to dro it up. I don't want to confuse people,
- 55:36Speaker 4: but just the way that they use leverage and the
- 55:38Speaker 4: way that they played to help. It's man to man,
- 55:41Speaker 4: but it's like it's man to man with support, And
- 55:45Speaker 4: right now it feels like when they play man, they're
- 55:48Speaker 4: truly putting these corners on islands like they are. They
- 55:50Speaker 4: are running, you know, at all three levels on an
- 55:53Speaker 4: island without a much support in the middle of the field.
- 55:57Speaker 4: I just don't think that that is the right way
- 56:00Speaker 4: to do it. I don't think it's like a good
- 56:02Speaker 4: way to do it. So I get it they're probably
- 56:04Speaker 4: a little bit concerned about their four man pass rush
- 56:07Speaker 4: right now. But the trade off when you take guys
- 56:10Speaker 4: out of the rush and put them in coverage is
- 56:12Speaker 4: in theory, the quarterback should have to hold the football
- 56:15Speaker 4: longer because there's not going to be as many open
- 56:17Speaker 4: windows down the field for him to throw the ball.
- 56:20Speaker 4: So if you can't trust that your four man rush
- 56:23Speaker 4: is going to get home in like three seconds, then
- 56:25Speaker 4: that's a big problem. Then they should be in the
- 56:28Speaker 4: market for pass rushers, and maybe they already are. But like,
- 56:31Speaker 4: if that's truly how you feel about Chazon, Landry Barmore
- 56:35Speaker 4: and Williams, that they can't get home in three seconds,
- 56:37Speaker 4: then that's problematic. I don't think that's the case. I
- 56:40Speaker 4: think those guys are good enough that if you get
- 56:42Speaker 4: these quarterbacks to hold the ball for a little bit longer,
- 56:45Speaker 4: that they're going to be able to get home. But
- 56:47Speaker 4: right now they're just they're sending these blitzes at these quarterbacks.
- 56:51Speaker 4: They're playing a lot of man pressure and the man
- 56:53Speaker 4: blitzer are not working. So like you got to get
- 56:56Speaker 4: the guys out of the pass rush and you've got
- 56:57Speaker 4: to get those guys back in the secondary. I don't
- 57:00Speaker 4: think it's personnel driven. And I and I'm I'm really
- 57:03Speaker 4: surprised when I hear these rumors circulating and you're not wrong,
- 57:08Speaker 4: like they're all they are circulating. Well, I mean some
- 57:11Speaker 4: depth too, yeah, but they could use some depth anywhere
- 57:14Speaker 4: on the roster, so that includes corner. But like I
- 57:17Speaker 4: just I'm surprised that they would put actual assets into
- 57:20Speaker 4: adding another corner, Like, who are you taking off the
- 57:22Speaker 4: field that corner? If everybody's Well, that's the thing I
- 57:25Speaker 4: think to be better prepared if they lose somebody, you know, upgrade.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Maybe Alex Austin is the third corner, Well he's the
- 57:32Speaker 4: fourth corner or the third boundary corner. Okay, I guess
- 57:36Speaker 4: and in theory or like who really is the backup
- 57:39Speaker 4: slot corner to Marcus Jones, Like I kind of interpreted
- 57:42Speaker 4: that as like it just like any other position, they
- 57:44Speaker 4: could use the body. Just because it's a depthney doesn't
- 57:47Speaker 4: mean they're not looking for We do have a little

- 1:01:08Speaker 4: All right, let's open up the phones, let's open up
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: the emails. What was your little bit of breaking news?
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: The little bit of breaking news, The NFL has announced
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: they are moving the Pro Bowl to Super Bowl Week.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: It will be played Tuesday night in primetime somewhere in
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: the San Francisco area. So that's a wrap on that.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: Evense so the Pro Bowl is still flag football, Well,
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: it's the Pro Bowl they'll do.
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: They're doing the Pro Bowls teams.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: We'll start at six thirty and then the flag football
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: game will be at eight. Just the just get rid
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: of it Moss Cones Center.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: The only way that this.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: Is better is and it's one event. It's the old
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: quarterback Skills competition. You can go back on Andrew Bledsoe
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: Tour that thing. You can go back and they do
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: it a little bit. I think they have like the
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: moving targets, you know, wine and I think Drake May
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: did it a couple of years ago.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: I guess it was last year. But the.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: That was great, you know back.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: In the day. Brady did it one year.
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: Uh. And they have some really cool moments and it's
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: like all those guys in Hawaii just like kind of
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: slinging it and I you know, guys are throwing it
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: like seventy yards and stuff like that. Like, I guess
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: that's kind of cool. But other than that, this whole
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: event is just starting to become a mess. Like just
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: name the Pro Bowl roster to give the players because
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: the players haven't written in contracts and stuff like that,
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: you have to have the Pro Bowl. From a contraction standpoint,
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: like just name it.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: Baseball does like an All MLB.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: Team, right, well, we have the All Pro Team, but
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: you could do the same way. Yeah, until it's started
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: to not agents start to take it out of contracts
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: in terms of incentive packages and stuff like that. You
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: have to obviously have it in there for the time being,
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: but eventually once that gets phased out. I just have
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: no use for the Pro Bowl, and I don't think
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: players have used for it either. Yeah.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: I think some sort of skills event thing whatever and
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: turning it in maybe the week of the Super Bowl.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: It because because there's nothing really on Tuesday night, team
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: availability doesn't start till Wednesday.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: Well, we have opening nights Monday.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: It's usually Monday, right, So Tuesday's kind of a dead spot. Now,
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: some people the event might want a dead spot, but
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: you know, it gives you something to fill out the week.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: That's Saturday, there's usually you know, you're late in college
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: basketball season, you have some big college basketball games. NBA
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: and NHL are going. I think the no, the NHL
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: All Star Game is usually the next week, but I
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: think they might have the Olympics this year. Right, is
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: that when the Olympics.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: Is The Olympics are in February, right, because in.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Milana February sixth, So yeah, so now it's not competing
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: with olymp the Olympics, right, It probably takes sense it
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: just it just goes yes, it is the Winter Olympics.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: It goes back to my point that I think that
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: whole schedule is gonna get reworked because look, look they're
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: gonna go to eighteen games at some point, and when
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: they go to eighteen games, they're probably gonna go to
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: twenty weeks, so they're gonna be two bay it.
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: They're gonna want if we can get the Super Bowl
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: to President's Day weekend. It becomes as I think everybody's
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: dream scenario.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: So I also wonder if they probably not, but I
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: wonder if they go back to starting on Labor Day.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: The thing that I would like to see is adding
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: a buy once you go to So I think once
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: they go to eighteen games, they're gonna go to eight
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: teams in the playoffs per conference, and there's gonna be
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: no more by weeks, which I'm not in support of
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: any of this. I think six teams was the perfect
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: number and I loved that format, the two buys and
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: winning your division meant something, and you're standing in the
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: conference meant something all that and they're taking I don't
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: like the new format, but like, realistically, seven teams makes
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: no sense. One bye makes no sense. They're gonna go
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: to eight teams to add the extra two playoff games,
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: will probably get playoff Thursday night football or something. I
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: if they do that, I would like to see them
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: add a bye week before the playoffs. So you play
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: eight week eighteen, then you have a bye.
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: Oh my god, this season's not gonna end till March.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: No, because it would well, you're gonna get rid of
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: a preseason game, okay, in this so starting earlier, so
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: you're yeah, I don't like starting.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: The labor Day weekend. I like my Labor Day weekend.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: I like it too.
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: But even if that don't, it's a nice.
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: Little I mean, I guess we would probably get the
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: weekend before now, like if it's not Labor Day weekend,
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: but you need that one weekend where like it's that
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: one calm before the storm weekend.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: I don't know, but I hear what you're saying. With
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: the playoffs going.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: I I hate the idea of expanding the playoffs more
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: because of I think it should be hard to make
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: the playoffs and the I.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Think it should be two again, six is the perfect number, Yeah,
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: but I think eight is a better number than seven.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: I agree that makes sense. No, I agree with you there.
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: So I think it's eight with two teams getting the bye,
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: and then you have like a you know, first round
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: of the play six with two teams getting by. Well
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: that's the that's the dream is You're not gonna have
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: a buye with eight. You have eight with two teams
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: getting a bye, and then they played the team's played
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: in six.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that doesn't make sense because then oh so
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: then two of the teams have played round one play
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: each other again? What or how you have eight with
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: the bye? So three plays?
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: Are we just bad at math?
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: Right now? Yeah? Three plays eight? Four play seven? Three
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: games five plays six?
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: Yeah, then you'd have five coming out of it, right
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: so that way, Yeah, I don't like it.
- 1:06:25Speaker 8: Then?
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: No, no, no, you still are.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: We like just being done?
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: Plays eight? Yeah?
- 1:06:31Speaker 11: Four?
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: There was going to be that. I would leave you
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: with five teams. You can't do that. Yeah, So eight
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: is no boys, But i'd like to see them add
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: the bye before the playoffs if they did, if and
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: when they do that.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: Wow, that was that was That was that ethic of college, right.
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: No one said there would be math or not.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: We're nerves and you wonder why I don't like the math, okay,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: because I have to do things like I'm good.
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: I'm good when they do the math for me. I
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: just don't. I'm not good at doing the math.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: But if they do the math for you, how do
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: you know they did it right? How do you know
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: whether or not you can trusted.
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: I'm not like this, just like you have trust issues.
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: If that's serious issue, can we get to the phone?
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Hang on?
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: So wait, so if you have was that that was hilarious?
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: By the way, If you if you have a buye
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: before the playoffs, so that's plus one week, and then
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: you're adding two to the season. That's twenty so you're
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: now plus three. You get rid of a preseason game
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: that's minus one week. Now you're plus two. You're trying
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: to move it back anyway to get to Labor Day weekend.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Now it's so you would need one more week. You
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: would have to start to do twenty games, two by
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: weeks playoff, by Super Bowl, by President's Day weekend. You
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: would need to start Labor Day.
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: We are literally going.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: And now you're taking on college football.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: Now we're going to play in March. Nobody cares about that.
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: Luke is in. What's up, Luke? Luke, you're there? That
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: Fluke on hold for a while? All right, call back
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: in if yeah, we got our brains and pretzels.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: There.
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: Mike is in Puerto Rico. It's up, Mike.
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: Hey Ale, Hey Evan, how you doing today?
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: Good?
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: Evan. I know you appreciate the Bill Simmons and the
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: Ringer podcast, and they have a bit there that's called
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: like half baked ideas. I was wondering if I could
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: toss up I was wondering if I could toss out
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: some half fried ideas to y'all.
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: Yes, sure, okay.
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: So, first of all, given that Drake is not quite
- 1:08:27Speaker 6: one hundred percent protecting himself when he's going out there
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: and doing his runs on scrambling and stuff like that,
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: how would you feel about the team mandating him to
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: wait our guardian.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Caps not necessary? No, protect yourself. Those things are heavy.
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: I hear what you're saying, but I'm good.
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: You're protecting an asset, additional insurance. You don't think, you know,
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: even if it helps him ten percent, you don't think
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: it's worth it, given that he might be the franchise.
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: I think that it's football, and he's going to get
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: hurt and he needs to learn how to protect himself.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: If he wants to wear a guardian cap, I wouldn't
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: impose it. But also it's extra weight on your head.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: It's going to change the way he turns his head
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: looks at the field if you don't want him to
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: be uncomfortable doing things he has to do on a
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: every snap basis, when there's ways you can coach him
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: around taking some of the hits.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'm not a like this isn't to be
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: like anti concussion conspiracy theory here. I would like to
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: see more data on the guardian caps and how much
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: they actually help.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: I think the data is that they work.
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: It is, but it's such a good sample and practice.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: Where they work. You hear about this lots like the
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: it's the head to head collisions at the line of scrimmage, right,
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: it's a bunch of little ones. That's more what they're for.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: That there's a reason that like the linemenough to wear
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: him in practice, but the wide receivers don't. It's a
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: fair question, Mike, what's your next Yeah, it's fair question.
- 1:09:49Speaker 6: Okay, the next time, what do you guys think about
- 1:09:52Speaker 6: for quarterbacks and receivers adding a past interfering stat so
- 1:09:58Speaker 6: yardage that they odd because they were interfered with in
- 1:10:02Speaker 6: a play, because that's something that they had a chance
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: to get. But then obviously they were interfere so they
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: didn't get a chance to make that, but it benefited
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: the team.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: It's just something that the Brandon Cook's stats.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: So somebody does keep track of this somewhere, because when
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: Brandon Cooks was here, I remember seeing the stat that
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: receiving yards plus pass interference yards, he was the second
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: leading receiver in the league.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: Yep, I love it.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: So that does exist somewhere. I would be all for
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: making it more public, especially for receivers.
- 1:10:32Speaker 6: Okay, and one last one, and so you guys know
- 1:10:37Speaker 6: the rules a lot better than I do, especially with
- 1:10:39Speaker 6: now the new kickoff rules and stuff like that. So
- 1:10:42Speaker 6: I believe you have to declare when you're gonna do
- 1:10:44Speaker 6: an on side kick?
- 1:10:45Speaker 8: Correct?
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Correct?
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: Okay, what happens if you declare as an onside kick
- 1:10:51Speaker 6: but you still kick off regular? Is there are there
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: any implications? Is there any strategic advantage to the kick
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: team if you do that?
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: I believe you can't do that. No, I think that
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: they would just get the ball it wherever. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: I believe that's a penalty you can do. You can
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: do that, and it's popular in college, like that poocha
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: on sidekick, but there that really only works with a
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: surprise element. So I guess you could claim it's one
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: of those, but you wouldn't be able to get it.
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: So yeah, I don't think. I don't think that that
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: is allowed, But I don't love that you have to
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: declare that you're going to on sidekick it. I know
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: everybody always goes back to, uh the Coult Saints super Bowl,
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: like you would never have the surprise on sidekick, Like
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: that doesn't exist anymore.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: I here it is current on side kick. If the
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: on side kick goes beyond the setup zone untouched, the
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: kicking team would be penalized for I don't know what
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: uns is. Oh on Sports Mike, return team would start
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: at the A twenty yard line, So that's a massive
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: penalty their own twenty the opponent's twenty yard line. Yeah,
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: they get it in the red zone. That's what I'm
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: pretty sure is what a twenty means. Yeah, is this
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: AI or is this like the NFL dot Com? This
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: is NFL dot Com. Current onside kick rules would apply
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: if on side kick that goes beyond the setup zone untouched.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: I don't know exactly what the setup zone is. I'm
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: guessing it's like fifteen twenty yards. Kicking team would be
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: penalized for uns return team would start at the A twenty.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: So the game's over.
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: Yep? Is that the last one, Mike?
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Sagan, Is that the last one?
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: You got one more?
- 1:12:37Speaker 6: Oh? That's the last one. Just just trying out my bait.
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: See if you guys liked it.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: I liked it, Thanks Mike, Thanks for the call. Appreciate that.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: I hear what people are saying with the Guardian cap.
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: I'm just not totally convinced that's going to solve the problem.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: I'm never going to win multiplayer for wearing Guardian cap.
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: But I also especially like a shame thing.
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: No, but especially a quarterback.
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: I don't I don't want to force it on a
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: guy either, you're you're I'm talking about creating a whole
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: other host of penalty issues there.
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: It's not even that to me. I just don't know
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: if it's gonna work.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: Like I don't know if if he gets hit in
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: the head, uh, you know, a direct blow to the
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: head if he bounces his head off the turf, Like,
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: is that going to save him? Maybe it would, Like
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: it's obviously better than nothing, I suppose, but I just.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: Don't think it's gonna be.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: In the play against the Titans, He's still probably getting
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: pulled off the field because the guardian caps not preventing
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: the chin straft from going up. That's why he shook
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: his head. And again the guardian cap, from what I understand,
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: is more about the like play to play down to down,
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: like the lineman get blocking, like those collisions. It's not
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: about the one big hit.
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: Yeah, So that's obviously he shouldn't be hitting his head
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: every single play.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: All right, Shawn is in Vancouver. What's up, Sean?
- 1:13:44Speaker 12: Actually, I'm in I'm usiting my brother in South Florida.
- 1:13:47Speaker 12: So Evan, I hope to see the game of Champa.
- 1:13:50Speaker 12: I'll go up buy you a jersey mic stuff for
- 1:13:53Speaker 12: lunch on Saturday.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: Nice.
- 1:13:56Speaker 12: But I have I have one half boiled idea and
- 1:14:01Speaker 12: one question. Now against opponents where the Patriots have had
- 1:14:07Speaker 12: the game in hand, it's layed in the game, you know,
- 1:14:10Speaker 12: it seems like they've won the defense has been more aggressive.
- 1:14:14Speaker 12: They've been putting more pressure on the quarterback. You know
- 1:14:17Speaker 12: against New Orleans, Carolina and the Panthers that those are
- 1:14:25Speaker 12: the offenses that are struggling. Cleveland has an amazing defense,
- 1:14:29Speaker 12: but their offense struggles. I'm just this is the idea
- 1:14:33Speaker 12: this week. Let's start being aggressive right away on defense
- 1:14:36Speaker 12: and see how that goes, see if we can actually
- 1:14:39Speaker 12: get off the field to start the game. My question
- 1:14:42Speaker 12: is step On Dicks, Like you said, it has been amazing, incredible,
- 1:14:46Speaker 12: just a great free agent pickup. The only thing that
- 1:14:50Speaker 12: I think should change is he hasn't seen the end zone.
- 1:14:54Speaker 12: There hasn't been enough end zone targets. First, step On,
- 1:14:57Speaker 12: do you think that'll change? Is that that's the quint
- 1:15:00Speaker 12: Then what do you think happens moving forward? Okay, and
- 1:15:02Speaker 12: I'll leave you with that.
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: Thanks Sean to the first one. I had something to
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: say to that, and then I just totally space.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Like aggressive from the beginning.
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: So I think they tried that in New Orleans.
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: They send a corner blitz on the very first play
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: of the game and they hit a fifty three yard pass.
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: So I think that they've tried and I you know
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: they they talked about this.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: Some of the players I've spoken about this with have
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: said that they feel like once they make a play
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: on defense, like a big play like a sack or
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: a turnover, big negative play, they kind of get that
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: gets them rolling a little bit, that gets their momentum
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: headed in the right direction. So I think in New
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: Orleans they said, well, why don't we just call blitz
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: on the first play of the game and if let's
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: see if we get a negative play and maybe that'll
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: get us rolling early.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: And they tried it, and New Orleans.
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: Was ready for it, and they hit a fifty yard
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: bomb over Kyle Duggars's head. So I think that there's
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: I hear what Sean's saying, but I think they did
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: try that two weeks ago and that also didn't work.
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: So there's that. What was the second thing he said?
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: Now we're doing.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: Grand yea were it was? Actually it was an interesting
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: uh question.
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: Let's go to Aldred in North Carolina. What's that? Aldred?
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: How are we doing?
- 1:16:19Speaker 13: I'm doing pretty good, doing pretty good question?
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: Question? Yes?
- 1:16:24Speaker 13: Uh so, so last night Cleveland rank number three against
- 1:16:29Speaker 13: quarterback Uh scrambles, I mean they don't scrammer that much
- 1:16:32Speaker 13: against him that that well, and the number one what
- 1:16:37Speaker 13: the past defense yep as of last night, So we
- 1:16:43Speaker 13: haven't problems with problems on the officers of the line.
- 1:16:46Speaker 13: How do you think we're gonna go and do against
- 1:16:48Speaker 13: their defense? Just gonna be whatever offense score first wins
- 1:16:52Speaker 13: the game three and our defense and day defense. And
- 1:16:55Speaker 13: now I take it off the air. Thanks fellas, You'll
- 1:16:57Speaker 13: have a good one.
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: Thanks eld So I want to get to the brown
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: here in a second. Let's just go back to what
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: Sean was talking about with the touchdowns with Stefan Diggs.
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: I say this seriously, and I know sometimes we get
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: yelled at for mocking the fantasy football community. Is this
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: a fantasy football thing that you care that Stefan Diggs
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: doesn't have touchdowns?
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: Ors is an actual issue?
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: It's that that's never been a high touchdown role. Jacoby
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: Myers was the same way. It's just it's not a touch.
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: Other than talking about it from a fantasy angle, I
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: have no idea why it would matter if Stefan Diggs scores,
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: or if Stefan Diggs draws two guys in the red
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: zone and Austin Hooper scores, Right, Like I just for
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: the Patriots. If the ball finds him in the end zone,
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: then great. If he hits a big play he gets
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: in the end zone, then great. I don't think they
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: really necessarily care about padding Stefan Diggs's touchdown stats.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: Let's start talking a.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Little bit real quick. We're got a little more breaking
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: us here. The next round of Hall of Fame voting
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: is in. Yes, former Patriots that are moving on, Fred Taylor,
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: Tory Holt for a minute.
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: Okay, can you let you from an actual former Patriots.
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: Adam Vinitari, Yeah, Logan Mankins, Vince wolf Work, James Harrison,
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: Sante Samuel and Rodney Harrison.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so Roddy Harrison takes no sense. And then obviously
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Bill Belichick yesterday it's the Coaches Committee separate. This was
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: the Modern Era committee.
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: So the Modern era one is like on I think
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: this is round two. Yeah, so this is like normally
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: when all these Patriots show up, and then they cut
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: it down even further.
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: I think at the NFL Honors is.
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: Also go from here to I think it's twenty finalists, yeah,
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: twenty and then the and then that gets cut down
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: to eight that actually go on the ultimate ballot.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: And then they go on. That's where you mix in
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: the guys from like soa just committee the contributors.
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: So we have quite a bit ways to go here
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: until they get down to the end.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: The finalist one is where like Vince and Rodney and
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: those guys have kind of fallen off.
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: Vinitaries should keep going though. Okay, the Browns. So, so
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: here's the thing with the Browns A couple things. Starting
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: with the just the big picture. They have the biggest
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: discrepancy between offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency in the NFL.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: They have a top five defense in the league and
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: they have a bottom five offense. They are really struggling
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: to score points, especially when the other team doesn't hand
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: them points like Miami did last week. It doesn't matter
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: if it's Dylan Gabriel or if it was Joe Flacco
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: early in the year. They're thirtieth in the league in points.
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: Dylan Gabriel right now is one of the worst downfield
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: passers in the NFL. He is dead last and completion
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: percentage on throws of ten plus yards in the air,
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: He's eleven for thirty one throw it. So the fact
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: that Drake may earlier in the show, we talked about
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: how good he is throwing the ball twenty plus yards
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: down the field. Dylan Gabriel can't even throw the ball
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: ten yards down the field. And I'm not trying to
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: be disrespectful. I'm just telling you this is a really
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: limited quarterback that they're facing.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: Brown's run game and the Browns short passing game is
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: a formula for them. They can throw the ball underneath
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: the defense and they can catch and run. They can
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: throw the ball to their tight ends, they can throw
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: the ball to their backs, and quinchn Jenkins has had
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: a nice start. But I just find it very hard
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: to believe as long as the Patriots don't have like
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: a Pittsburgh like game where they turn the ball over
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: five times, that the Browns are going to be able
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: to score with the Patriots in this game. Now, the
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: fun part about this game though, is not so much
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: that I'm worried about the final result. Like I think
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: the Patriots will win this game. I think they will
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: win this game pretty comfortably. But it will be fascinating
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: to see how Drake.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: May plays against a really good defense.
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: And is a lot of this MVP talk, a lot
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: of this efficiency stuff that's off the charts with him.
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: Is this a product of the schedule a little bit
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: or is it really that he has developed into that
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: good of a quarterback. And I think we're gonna find
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: out a little bit of that this week. A couple
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: of things about the Browns defense. They are a very
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: aggressive unit. They are very very aggressive upfront. They have
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: a great front. They really have great talent all three
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: levels of their defense. You know, on the front, you
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: obviously know about Miles Garrett, but Alex Wright's a really
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: underrated player. Malie Collins is a really underrated player. They
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: just drafted Mason Graham at linebacker. Carson Schweessinger, their second
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: round pick, is having a really good rookie season. Devin
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: Bush is a really solid number two linebacker there. They
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: still have Denzel Ward, you know, Pro Bowl corner as well,
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: so they have a lot of talent on the defensive side.
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: Jim Schwartz is one of the best schemers in the
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: league on the defensive side. So it's a tough test
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: from that standpoint. But a couple of things. I do
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: think that their secondary in terms of like their second
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: and third corner. You know, Denzel Ward's a great player,
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: but they just swapped corners with Jacksonville. You know, they
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: have Tyson Campbell now their slot corner as well. I
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: think they can be hacked. I think those two guys
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: are You can pick on those two guys now. The
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: obviously the big thing is is Drake Megan have the
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: time to do that with Miles Garrett. The aggressiveness of
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: this Browns defense. They struggle against moving pockets and they
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: struggle against play action because they just are flying downhill
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: every time they get a chance to. So if you
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: can get the quarterback on the move, if you can
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: get him out of the pocket, if you can hit
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: play action shots down the field with you know, extra protection,
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: you know, put six seven guys into the protection, maybe
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: leave the tight ends in, maybe go six to zero line,
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: you know sometimes and really load it up. You really
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: only need to run two routes at them down the
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: field because they play a lot of single high coverage.
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: So if you can do that sort of thing against
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: this Browns defense, then you can throw the ball. On
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: the Browns defense, you gotta block it and you gotta
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: keep the quarterback protected. But it's not a defense that
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: is completely has you know, zero ability.
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: To throw the football.
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: Against so So just to wrap that up, if I'm
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: the Patriots in this game, I have a couple of
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: schemed up shot plays where like I said, maybe it's
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: leaving both tight ends in and you go seven man protection,
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: or maybe you go tackle eligible and you put two tackles.
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: You know, you Will Campbell and Vederian load on Mason
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: Miles Garrett, and you take some shots early in this
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: game down the field, because if you get them into
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: like a ten to nothing or a fourteen nothing hole,
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: this game's over.
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: Like the Browns are not coming back. So you have
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: to get them down on the scoreboard early and make
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: them throw their way back into the football game.
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you. Blocking it is the key thing.
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: And this is a new kind of test. Miles Garrett
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: plays all over, but he'll play a lot.
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: On He plays mostly over the left.
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: He'll play on that left side. So you know, they
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: face TJ. Watt, they face Max Crosby, but those guys
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: will lining up opposite Morgan Moses and Mike w and Wenthu.
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: Now you're going to be testing Will Campbell. You're gonna
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: be testing Jared Wilson. If I'm the Browns, I'm throwing
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: a lot of line games at them. Now that can
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: make you susceptible to rollouts. Here's the question, are you
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: always rolling mad to the right or do you ever
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: roll them to the left. Now you're rolling towards Garrett.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: So it's a little counterintuitive, but it also you show
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: it early. It forces a little more discipline on that side.
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: I do think the moving pockets will be a big
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: part of this game. And again, they got to show
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: that they can run the ball to upset the time
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: of that pass rush. I said it before. They're not
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: going to run for five yards of carry probably like
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: they did against Tennessee. It'd be great if they did.
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: I'm not expecting it. But it also can't be like
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: the New Orleans game either, where it's just completely non existent.
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: You have to show the Brown something to ex something
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: to respect.
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: So you could you can roll both ways.
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: Obviously, you could roll to mcgarrett's side and like try
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: to crack them like so you take like a tight
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: end or a wide receiver and as you roll, you
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: kind of just crack him and block him and pin
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: him inside, and so that helps Drake may get the edge.
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: The Vikings did that a couple of times and had
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: some success with it. The Packers was more gun rollouts.
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: They Aaron Rodgers in the shotgun and then they booted
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: off of fakes out of the shotgun, which can also
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: be helpful because then the quarterback can see, you know,
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: are they glitzeeing? Like what am I looking at? You're
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: not turning your back to the defense like you do
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: when you're under center. So there's some element of that
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: as well. But if you go watch their tape, especially
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: the tape against Pittsburgh and Minnesota, they got a little
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: bit better, it felt like against it last week against Miami.
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: But the Minnesota and the Packer that keeps saying Packers
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: because of Rogers. The Steelers tape is just filled with
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: bootlegs and chunk plays off of bootlegs. Like both teams
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: just had tremendous success doing that. I think that that's
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: the way that you go because the worst thing to
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: do is to drop back pass and let Miles Garrett
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: just tee off on Drake May and Will Campbell, Like,
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: you just don't want to do that. You don't want
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: to live in that world. To your point about running
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: the football, they do. They are a little bit weaker
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: against spread runs, like if you spread them out and
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: you run the ball from the shotgun, they've given up
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: a little bit more. They're a very stingy run defense.
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: They're really near the top of the league in pretty
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: much every category against the run. It's hard to run
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: on them. But if you do want to find some
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: success running the football, the teams have found a little
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: bit of it running the ball out of the gun
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: because I think it just spreads them out a little
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: bit and that allows you to run it a little
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: bit more inside. So if you're the Patriots, you know,
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: you can spread them out, run the football from the gun,
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: then you can boot off those runs from the gun.
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: And now that I think that's sort of the game
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: plan or the point of attack for them. Like I said,
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: Campbell Tyson Campbell uh. And I'll get the name of
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: the slock corner. I'm blanking on it right now. They're
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: nickel corner. Both those guys I think can be had.
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: You know, I wouldn't really test Denzel Ward all that
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: much now. They don't travel Ward, or they haven't yet,
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: So I'm interested to see if Denzel Ward travels with
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: Diggs on Sunday.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: If he doesn't think Greg Newsom, no, Miles Harden, Yeah,
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: is their nickel corner. Yep.
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: If they if they don't travel, then like you can
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: just put Digs over at Tyson Campbell And I think
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: Diggs is gonna go to town on Tyson Campbell. So I
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: would just look for those types of opportunities. It's a
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: fun test, but I would not necessarily say, like I understand,
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: this is what we do. We come into the week,
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: we talk up the other team. We try to find
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: ways that they can win. I think if the Patriots
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: score twenty points in this game, it's game over.
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: Like I don't. I mean, look, we've watched We've been
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: on the other side of this, watching the Patriots the
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: last few years. We know how that thing goes.
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it's you know, it's a run in in short
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: passing game.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: On Quinn Shawn Judkins has started to come on, like
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: don't allow the big play. Don't allow you know, they
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: gotta be They've been much much better about tackling, but
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: like in this game, don't allow Quinn Shawn Judkins to
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: break tackles in Djok who I know is a little
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: banged up, but like if he plays, that's a guy
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: that can do some damage after the catch, but take
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: care of the short stuff. Wrap guys up when you
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: get to him. We shouldn't see an explosive offensive performance
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: from the Browns certainly. And there's one other thing. I
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: don't what it was.
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: So they scored thirty one points last week, twenty one
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: of them came off turnover. Yeah, they had a hand
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: and they had a pick six, and then they had
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: essentially a pick six because the Browns were turned into
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: the two yard line, So they had really like two real.
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: Scoring So that's where that's where you open the door
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: to me with the Browns is if the turnover problems
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: come back, and they've been really good about it. The
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: reason this game, I think we're objectively we're taking the
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: Browns little more serious. I think then we took the
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: Titans last week. Miles Garrett is a real Tuesday player.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: And look, I think Jeffrey Simmons is two. Yeah, but
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: he's on the interior. It's a little different. He also
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: got hurt in that game. Yeah, and the Saints didn't
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: have anybody like this on defense. No, So Miles Garrett
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: is in this what was identified before the year, and
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: it's kind of bare true it's the stretch of easy games.
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: These three games might be the easiest three game stretch.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: They have Miles Garrett. I think you'd argue, really on
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: either side of the ball, is the best player that
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: they'll face.
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: I think you could argue that Miles Garrett is the
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: best defensive end in the history of football.
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: Okay, I hate that's what? Like?
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: Who?
- 1:29:07Speaker 13: Like?
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: Why is that?
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: Crazy? Taylor?
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: Lawrence Taylor is an outside linebacker.
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: Oh you're talking just defensive end, hand in the dirt,
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: defensive end mmm jj watt. I think he's there.
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: I mean he's I think he's up there.
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: Yeah, because I mean the guys that he gets compared
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: to now are mostly linebackers, like Parsons is a linebacker.
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: He is that good.
- 1:29:28Speaker 4: Like when you watch him rush, he does things that
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: human bodies of that side should not be able to do.
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: He is a little a legitimate alien.
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: Like he he has that teleport move now where he
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: just like he wins inside in two steps. It's one
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: off the ball and then it's one lateral step and
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: he's in the backfield Like that is absolutely disgustingly sick.
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: So I put unbelievable.
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: I put up t J Watt or sorry J J. Watt. Yeah,
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: and you're gonna hate these ones, Reggie White and Michael Strahan.
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: So I think Reggie White is probably considered the best
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: defensive end of all time. Yeah, I think Miles Garrett
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: is in the conversation.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: I know, I think he's in the conversation. You just
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: said that with such conviction. No love for Michael Strahan.
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: No, Okay, Reggie White is a good one.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: Reggie, I meang is the standard. I know that. And yeah,
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: JJ Watt was. I think some people count J. J.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: Watt as a linebacker because he didn't play standing up
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: a little bit, But nobody counts j No.
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: I would actually argue that JJ Watt might be like
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: more of a defensive tackle. He played a lot inside
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: the tackle. But anyways, that's semantics. I think Miles Garrett
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: is probably the freakiest rusher I've ever seen, just in
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: terms of his movement ability, like his ability at his size,
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: you know, also like to his flexibility to coil his
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: hips underneath sys out stand with speed to power or
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: to dip the edge like this is we're talking about
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: a guy that's like six five and seventy five pounds
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: moving like that like Parsons moves like that at twenty
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: five pounds later, you know, So like it's just that's
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: the part of it. I think that makes him so freaky.
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: Will Campbell, Like this will be the hardest matchup of
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: Will Campbell's life. Yeah, and he will never face anybody better.
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: And they're gonna need to give him a ton of help.
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: Yeah, So it's a it's a tall task now. I
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: fully expect whether it's Austin Hooper, whether again I could
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: keep going back to the six o line thing, like,
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: whether it's one of those two things, Like I don't
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: think Will Campbell is going to be left alone very often.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: This is it's I mean, he's of the level. Remember
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: when they played Calvin Johnson and they just lined up
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: two corners opposite him every play, And yeah, Miles Garrett,
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: is that kind of life.
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: Is And it's especially that true because it's like that's
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: how you lose the game. Yeah, Like I think that
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: when you go up against other teams, like I think
- 1:31:51Speaker 4: last week, you know what Jeffrey Simmons, As great as
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: Jeffrey Simmons was, and I know he didn't play the
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: whole game, I still didn't feel like there was a
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: way that Jeffery Simmons could totally take over the game
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: that would lose the Patriots the game. I think the
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: Browns have enough that they're a little bit better than
- 1:32:06Speaker 4: the Titans talent wise across the board that if Miles
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: Garrett has like a ten pressure game and he's just
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: taking him over, then it could turn ugly, not like
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: blowout ugly, but like the Patriots could. I don't think
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: Jeffrey Simmons was going to take over that game to
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: the point where the Patriots are ever going to lose.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: But I think this could happen with Miles Garrett, and
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: I have no like this is to me is the
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: best player in football. Maybe he's that good now. I
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: think that the Patriots will be ready for him. I
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: think Josh McDaniels and Doug Moron will be ready for him.
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: They'll have things up their sleeve. They'll move the pocket,
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: they'll change pitches, they'll chip him, they'll double him, they'll
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: pull out the kitchen sink. They're not going to just
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: let him t off on little Campbell. They're not going
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: to let Jim Schwartz just move him around and do
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: that sort of thing either. So I'm concerned, but I
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: have a lot of faith in the Patriots coach staff
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: to be able to manage it. You know, whether it's
- 1:33:02Speaker 4: moving pockets, it's quick passing game, it's chips, it's double teams,
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: it's that sort of thing. In terms of the other pieces, well,
- 1:33:10Speaker 4: it's worth Miles Garrett four sacks in three career games
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: against the Patriots.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: His only two sack game against the Paper. So he
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: had one sack in twenty nineteen, he had one sack
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: in twenty twenty one. The only two sack game he
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: had was twenty twenty two, so Josh McDaniel's not here
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: for that one. So Patriots won all three of those games.
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: The only thing that I would say about Miles Garrett
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: on like a slightly negative tone. His press conferences lately
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: had been really dark. He's been really critical of the
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: Browns and they're off. I mean, do you blame them, No,
- 1:33:43Speaker 4: But I'm just his buying and his compete checking out.
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: I don't know where that is, and I'm not usually that.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: I don't usually go in that side of the street.
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: It was this year, right that there was that whole
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: saga where they were going to trade him and then
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: at the last second he said he was going to
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: go back because they made him some assurance about being
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: more competitive. Obviously that didn't happen.
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I could see him being a little miffed because
- 1:34:07Speaker 4: he's not an extension, right, Yes, some big, big extension,
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: and I I just.
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: I don the Browns waste another guy like that. Joe
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: Thomas now him.
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: Yeah, they they they asked him about Joe Flacco's performance
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: last week and he had some critical comments like I
- 1:34:23Speaker 4: guess that we didn't need that or something like that.
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: But for him, you know, so he's getting a little
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: spicy in the media. So I had something to monitor.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: I did in three career playoff games.
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought that he was okay in this past
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: game against the Dolphins, but I didn't think it was
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: like I don't think it was like peak Miles.
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: Just to play Devil's advocate. Or is there an element
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: of I guess I got to do all this myself
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: and he shows up like an absolute demon to warn
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: them the game single handedly.
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: There's definitely that element too. He's a hell of a
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: football player, it really is.
- 1:34:52Speaker 8: Now.
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: Uh, this Browns defense is a really good defense, and
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: I keep repeating myself. But I'm just really I think
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: that this is one that I can't wait to watch
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: the tape of Drake May on Monday, because if he
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: deals against this defense, then I don't even know if
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: I have the words to describe like the high perpose
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: you only need. I mean it just that would be
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: an incredible thing to see. Let's get back to the calls.
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: We'll take a few emails here too, on you know,
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: trade deadline and things like that.
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: Matt is in New Hampshire. What's up, Matt?
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: Hey?
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: What's up?
- 1:35:26Speaker 13: Guys?
- 1:35:27Speaker 11: How you doing?
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: Hey?
- 1:35:30Speaker 11: So this isn't really about the Browns. It's more of
- 1:35:33Speaker 11: just about the team coming into this year. I just
- 1:35:36Speaker 11: kind of want to get your guys opinion on it.
- 1:35:37Speaker 11: I kind of only looked at the free agent class
- 1:35:40Speaker 11: and I was only looking really at Marcus Shownes as
- 1:35:42Speaker 11: an extension candidate. But midway through the year, I'm looking
- 1:35:46Speaker 11: now and you have guys like Calebon chased On and
- 1:35:48Speaker 11: Chiros Tonga who seemed to have found homes here in
- 1:35:51Speaker 11: New England. So I just wanted to get your guys
- 1:35:52Speaker 11: opinions on those two guys. And I'm sure you guys
- 1:35:55Speaker 11: obviously feel the same way about Marcus Shows as well,
- 1:35:57Speaker 11: because he's kind of taking a step for this year.
- 1:36:00Speaker 11: He's got a great year so far. But just your
- 1:36:02Speaker 11: opinions on extending guys like Chiros Toga and Caleb On
- 1:36:06Speaker 11: Chase On to either team friendly deals or just you know,
- 1:36:10Speaker 11: a couple of years extensions for both of them.
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: Thanks guys, Thanks Matt, thanks for the call. It was
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: a one year deal for Tonga. Why do I think
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: it was a two year deal?
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: Maybe I thought, I know, he ye two million. I
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: know it was a one year deal for Chase On.
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: Chaison's an interesting one one year deal for tongas Okay,
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: So I mean, look, I I'd take both those guys back.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: Absolutely. Chaison's an interesting one because.
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: The it's kind of the josh Uja thing, where like
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: we all thought josh j was going to get this
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: massive contract coming off to his big twenty twenty two
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: opposite June On, we all think that Chaison is kind
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: of tracking for a similar contract.
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: It didn't happen for Ja.
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: Teams kind of saw through the production and uh, well
- 1:36:51Speaker 4: I don't know if that's Chase On because Jason had
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: good production last year too, But just it was with
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: Max Crosby on the other.
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: Side, so didn't hit free agency after that. He there
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: was another year in there he didn't play well. Okay,
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: so he had eleven happened at the end of twenty
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: two and they were all the second half season, and
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: then twenty twenty three was when Judon got hurt.
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: Okay, I thought that maybe they that was when he
- 1:37:11Speaker 4: signed the one year deal with the Patriots.
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: No, he signed the one year deal after twenty three.
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: Okay, that makes more sense. Yeah, So Jason, I think,
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: is you know, tracking to get paid well, you know,
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: could you get it done early and maybe avoid competing
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: in the market. Maybe, But if I'm him, I'm probably
- 1:37:29Speaker 4: betting on myself at this point.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: I think it's also a weak free agency class. So
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: you go in as a past twenty six year old
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: pass rusher coming off in two strong years and a
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: former first round and a former first round pick, and like,
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: you're gonna be in good shape.
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: So that's one where look, I really like what he's doing.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: Actually, it is kind of a weaker class. But the
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: one spot as strong Jalen Phillips, Trey Hendrickson.
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: Yeah, but the well Trey Henderson might because of all
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: the issues with the contracts. But you know, I don't
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: know if Jalen Jon.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: Philps might too. He just might want to get out
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: of there. He might not going anywhere. No, But anyway, Yeah,
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: it's it's too a look at this. I what I
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: was going to say is, and I really like what
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: calebon chase On is done. And he is only twenty
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: six years old. Is there a Mark Anderson element where
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: like he's just kind of on a heater and this
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: year is what it is? And maybe it's some of
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: it's a product of the system and instead of because
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: you're gonna pay him twenty million dollars a year probably right,
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: Think so, No, No, because I think that the market
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: will look at him as a complimentary rusher.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: What if he finishes with ten sacks and he's on
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: pace for ten sacks.
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: Then you might have to pay him, you know, starter
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: money at that position, which is over ten. Now, I
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: don't think twenty million plus is you're talking about? That's
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: the guy, right, like that's your number one pass rusher
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: when you start getting into that category.
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: But isn't that what he's probably gonna look at himself
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: as because he would be not one pass rusher net,
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: you know, and then does he go to the old market.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: I just wonder, like.
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: I I think that, and look, maybe a team gets silly,
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: it always happens. But smart teams are gonna say he
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: piled up sacks opposite the Max Crosby a year ago. Yeah,
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: this year, Williams and Christian Barmer are pushing quarterbacks to him.
- 1:39:20Speaker 4: He is a very very good, complimentary rusher, but I
- 1:39:24Speaker 4: don't think that he is a number ze rush.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: For the right price, obviously, I take him back. And
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: if you're telling me it's gonna take like fourteen to fifteen,
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: I might do that. But it's a really good year
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: for edge rushers in the draft. You know, you still
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: have those guys in the middle, So I don't we
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: got a long way to go. If he plays himself
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: in close to that twenty million dollar range, though, I
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: might start looking at you know, because we are getting
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: to the point now where you've gotta start thinking about
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: the money for Drake Ma and Christian Zalez. Yeah.
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: I think about the money for Drake May on a
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: semi daily.
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: But well, the Gonzales one comes first.
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: But like the consalt past couple of years, a great player,
- 1:39:59Speaker 4: But can Zalees is going to be a maximum I
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: would say probably around thirty million I get.
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: But regardless of what the ultimate number is. The last
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: few years we've taken this approach, I've said this a lot.
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: We've talked about for agency. Oh the money is this?
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: Oh the money is that you don't have anybody you're
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: paying for three years and now we're getting like the
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: contract comes off the books before Gonzalez goes on, before
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: May goes on. Is that going to be the case
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: if you pay kaylebon Chase on.
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: Sure, But I'm not worried about the Gonzales money because
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: that's modest money by NFL standards. At this point, Drake
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: May is going to be a sixty million dollars a
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: year courter.
- 1:40:31Speaker 3: Probably not Probably he will be well.
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: So sixty sixty million, we'll see, I think there when
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: the wis media dealer like at this point, thirty million
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: going up, thirty million like is like kind of just
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: like okay, that's like Pro Bowl, all pro caliber defender money,
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: but it's modest money in the gran scope of things.
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: When you start talking about quarterbacks, like quarterbacks, thirty million
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: is like what like Sam Darnold is making, you know,
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: like that, it's like a decent starting quarterback. I know
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: he's playing better than that now, but that Drake May
- 1:41:04Speaker 4: contract is gonna be an absolute monster.
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: Also, the media deal's run through twenty thirty three. I
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: don't know why I thought they were all the stuf.
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: Because they were trying to renegotiate early.
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: That's what it is. Well, because if that happens, the
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: cap spikes and then it's just.
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: Like I yeah, I mean, I wouldn't be against bringing
- 1:41:19Speaker 4: him back, but I also don't We got a long
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: way to go.
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: Let's see what it looks like Tonga. I think is
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: a realistic return. Yep. I think he likes it here.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: I think Vrabel likes him here.
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: He's a pretty scheme specific player, so I don't think
- 1:41:33Speaker 4: he has a massive role specific I don't know how
- 1:41:36Speaker 4: big his market's going to be, and he's in a
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: pretty good situation where where he's playing next to Milli
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: Williams and Christian Barmore.
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: That one's realistic. I'd love to see him back. I
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: think he's been a super underrated signing. Do you remember
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: when we came in here for at show after free
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: agency or a listening off all the names. He didn't
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: even say kiris Tonga, I forgot. I had to.
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: Remind you to respect many times. I apologize to kiris Tonga.
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: I was not familiar with your game.
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: That's better than I thought. They reinvented his game. Yeah,
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: so that's what that's the awesome thing about it.
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: So listen really quick. Last thing on Chase On. Then
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: I want to answer this email. Uh, there is definitely
- 1:42:12Speaker 4: value in being a really good complimentary So if you're
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: like another team, I'm trying to think of an example
- 1:42:21Speaker 4: off the top of my head. But if you're another team,
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: I mean, the Raider is a really the example Cleveland.
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: That okay, Cleveland, Alex writes a good player, but he's
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: not really like an edge true edge. He's more like
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: a defensive end. But if you're another team that has
- 1:42:35Speaker 4: one really good like a stud pass rusher, like a
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: Miles Garrett, Uh, you know, like his situation in Vegas
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: with Max Crossby having the other guy on the other side,
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: that's gonna just you know, kind of play really solid steady. Uh,
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: football is very valuable like that that that's not anything
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: to sniff at with Calebon Chase On.
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: So this is an email from Todd.
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: I think this kind of just sums up all the
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: trade deadline emails that we're getting, So we can just
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: answer this to wrap up the show. What are the
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: two positions that you could upgrade that will allow you
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: to make a deep playoff run? So basically, what are
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: your what are your wish lists right now at the
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: trade dead I just don't.
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: Think you're upgrading starters really at this point that that
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: are going to make that much of an impact. Those
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: players don't move this time of year. If there's one,
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: maybe Safety, and that's more about where the Patriots are at,
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: then who's available. I think the deadline it just get
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: and there was a report from Breer that they're going
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: to take a more long term approach to this trade deadline,
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: which I like. So again that could be safety getting
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: another running back and they don't need Alvin Kamara, but
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: getting another body because you can't. We didn't really talk
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: that much about Reminder seems, and specifically we talked about
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: the run game. You have twenty touches. Yeah, when you
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: start getting up near that number week in and week out,
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: we know what that does to him come December. So
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: another guy that you trust ideally it becomes Travon Henderson,
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: but well he starts to figure it out. You know,
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: somebody else that that can help you move the stick there,
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: I think would be a really good addition. I talked
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: about corner earlier, and then somebody that could be a linebacker,
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: could be a safety, whatever. There's another one where it's
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: maybe a starter ish level player, rotational player. Somebody can
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: cover tight ends, because that thing still worries me and
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: Marte Moffo got a little bit of run late in
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: that game, look good. But if you can go out
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: and you get a tight end stop or it maybe
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: only plays on third downs but can kind of slide
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: into that role and sure up that role a little bit,
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: I think there'd be value in that.
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: I'm still I'm still focused on the spine of the defense.
- 1:44:30Speaker 4: I think they have a really good first level spine
- 1:44:31Speaker 4: with Williams and Barmore Tonga. We know that second level.
- 1:44:36Speaker 4: Robert Splaine has really come in, you know, settled down,
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: been much better. But that spot next to Robert Spuline
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: feels like it's a wild card right now. Like Christian
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: Ellis gets some run there, Jack Gibbons gets some run there,
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: and now Tavia gets a few snaps a game there,
- 1:44:51Speaker 4: it feels like it's Robert Splaine and right now, like
- 1:44:54Speaker 4: that other guy is just kind of a mystery box.
- 1:44:56Speaker 4: Safety I think is still a position that of me.
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: I think Kyle Dugger's actually played pretty well. I would
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: like to see Kyle Dugger keep playing. It's nothing against
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: Jalen Hawkins, and I'm sure when they get back to
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: full health with Jalen Hawkins, he will slide back in
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: for the most part. But I actually think Kyle Duggar's
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: played really good outside of one play in New Orleans
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: where they left him out to dry on a blitz
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: and I don't put that play on him. Zach Korr
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: talked about it last week. He took the fall for
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: that one, as I thought he should. Like, I really
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: feel like Kyle Duggar has played two solid games and
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: for Jalen Hawkins, so maybe they get Kyle Dugger back
- 1:45:33Speaker 4: to like twenty two to twenty three Kyle Duggar, and
- 1:45:36Speaker 4: that safety room doesn't look quite as barren. But I
- 1:45:39Speaker 4: still watch a film, I still see the middle of
- 1:45:42Speaker 4: the field wide open too often, So I'm looking linebacker,
- 1:45:45Speaker 4: I'm looking safety and running back I think is the
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: other one. Look, if they have an opportunity to trade
- 1:45:51Speaker 4: for a real premium player, the position really doesn't matter
- 1:45:54Speaker 4: all that much. But I will say the talk about
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: the edge rusher spot to me is a little odd.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: Long term.
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, but I find it hard to believe that
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: they're going to acquire somebody at the deadline better than
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: Landry or Chase on And we're already in this this
- 1:46:10Speaker 4: uh like situation with you know, Keon White and Britanny Jennings,
- 1:46:16Speaker 4: Like these guys can't get on the field. Well so
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: I but I really quickly that depth evaporated a couple
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: of weeks ago, right.
- 1:46:22Speaker 6: It did.
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: But that's but that's like true at any position. Like
- 1:46:25Speaker 4: if you have a rash of injuries at one position
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: where multiple guys go down with injuries, then you're gonna
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: have depth problems.
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: I just Caleb adding Caleb Murphy to me should be
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: maybe I don't want to say it's enough there, but like, yeah,
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: I trust it. If they need Caleb Murphy to play
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: tense snaps a game, get after the passer, I trust
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: me to do that.
- 1:46:42Speaker 4: I'm just a little bit surprised about the conversations to
- 1:46:46Speaker 4: like edge and wide receiver surprises me. Now if it's
- 1:46:50Speaker 4: Trey Hendrickson or A J. Brown, that's a different cover.
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: So that's the thing I think people just need to
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: kind of look at the like note the perspective, the
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: Trey deadline is not about long term needs. Edge is
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: a long term need. Wide receivers a long term need.
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: Guard is a long term need. You're not getting the
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: players to fill those spots at the trade deadline. The
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: NFL doesn't work that. Most leagues don't work that way.
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: It's super rare that those caliber players get moved in
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: any We get talked about more in other leagues in
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: the NFL, but like you don't, you know, trade deadline,
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: you're talking about rounding out depths, right, rounding out depth,
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: maybe getting you know, a rotational player. Even rentals in
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: the NFL isn't that common because the nature of the
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: sport and you know, coming in cold to learn a
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: system and things like that at certain positions just really
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: doesn't make it realistic. So I, you know, we're really
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: talking about depth and rotational play. Yes, edges a long
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: term need. I don't know that you know, they're not
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: answering that here in the next two weeks, so.
- 1:47:50Speaker 4: Really quickly, we only have two more minutes. But I
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: I also wonder what kind of calls they're getting for
- 1:47:55Speaker 4: their own players and teams that might be interested in
- 1:47:58Speaker 4: Patriot players. And the one player that I go to
- 1:48:01Speaker 4: in that category is Keon White. Keon White, to me,
- 1:48:05Speaker 4: just isn't built to be a four to three end
- 1:48:08Speaker 4: like they're trying to make him out to be. He's
- 1:48:10Speaker 4: not flexible enough, he's not bendy enough. It's not a
- 1:48:12Speaker 4: knock on him, it's just not his skill set. And
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: I think he's struggling a little bit to get off
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: blocks out there, and especially in the pass rush. He
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: just doesn't have to get off and the bend to
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: play outside the tackle consistently at a high level. He
- 1:48:25Speaker 4: is a really, really good interior pass rusher, Like the
- 1:48:28Speaker 4: numbers bear it out. Last year, he is one of
- 1:48:30Speaker 4: the most productive interior pass rushers in the league on
- 1:48:32Speaker 4: a person app basis if you're another team, And so, really,
- 1:48:37Speaker 4: what the point I'm getting at is right now, Keon
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: White is basically insurance for Milton Williams and Christian Barmore. Like,
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: if one of those guys goes down, you can put
- 1:48:45Speaker 4: Keon White on the third down pass rush in the
- 1:48:48Speaker 4: interior and there's not a steep drop off. Now there's
- 1:48:51Speaker 4: a drop off, but he's a similar player enough to
- 1:48:54Speaker 4: like a Milton Williams that if Milton Williams were to
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: miss some time, they might be able to get away
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: with Keon White as their three technique on third down
- 1:49:02Speaker 4: for a couple of snaps a game. Are other teams
- 1:49:06Speaker 4: that need interior pass rush help that are more desperate
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: for it, that don't have the bodies on the inside.
- 1:49:12Speaker 4: Are they calling about Keon White? And what are they offering?
- 1:49:15Speaker 4: Because right now he's a man with that a home
- 1:49:19Speaker 4: in this defense, and I just wonder if he's one
- 1:49:22Speaker 4: guy that might get moved. What do you what do
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: you think his market would be? We don't, we have
- 1:49:26Speaker 4: to be quick, but.
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I have no idea. Probably a Day three pick.
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: Most of these guys end up going for Day three picks. Yeah,
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: it's interesting, now, like player for player, could you you know,
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: I don't know that you're moving him for like a
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: brief hall but Jerome Forward, yeah, something like that. Like
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: I'd be interested in moving him in a player for
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: player deal.
- 1:49:43Speaker 4: I wonder if those more of those happen now that
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: you know, we sort of get into this trade heavy
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: because I do think there's gonna be a lot of
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: trades in the NFL.
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: All right, we gotta go.
- 1:49:53Speaker 4: Patriots Unfiltered will be up here at noon in just
- 1:49:56Speaker 4: about ten minutes. We'll be back next week. We'll be
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: talking about this Cleveland Browns game.
- 1:50:02Speaker 3: But I'm really.
- 1:50:02Speaker 4: Excited to talk about the Atlanta Falcons. We talked so
- 1:50:06Speaker 4: much about Michael Pennix during the draft process. Hopefully he's
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: healthy and playing in that game. I do think they
- 1:50:11Speaker 4: have a lot of talent in Atlanta and when they
- 1:50:13Speaker 4: put it together, mostly at home, but when they put
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: it together, you see that. So I'm interested in that
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: game as well. We'll see you guys next week.
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: Thanks for watching.
