Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio.
• 0:28
Speaker 2: The story all season has been this cast of characters
• 0:31
Speaker 2: from Minnesota. I asked our producers last night. I just
• 0:33
Speaker 2: threw out a couple of names. I probably forgot about
• 0:35
Speaker 2: ten of them. Give me some guys who, oh, I
• 0:38
Speaker 2: don't know were elsewhere last year that have made huge
• 0:41
Speaker 2: differences this year, Like Sam Darnold has been an MVP candidate,
• 0:45
Speaker 2: Aaron Jones has been as good as any other veteran
• 0:49
Speaker 2: running back that's at that age, Stefan Gilmour, Andrew Van Kinkle, Renard.
• 0:55
Speaker 2: I mean, we can go through Blake Cashman.
• 0:57
Speaker 3: We could talk about a million different guys.
• 0:59
Speaker 2: This is not your We have a cast of characters
• 1:03
Speaker 2: that we have been building. These guys were all on
• 1:04
Speaker 2: different teams last year. It's like an over sensation and
• 1:07
Speaker 2: they're not huge fore agent signings.
• 1:09
Speaker 3: I've said it every week since the start of training camp.
• 1:13
Speaker 2: Sam Darnold signed a one year, ten million dollar deal
• 1:16
Speaker 2: in Minnesota, and he has been as good as any
• 1:18
Speaker 2: quarterback in that conference. I don't know if he is
• 1:22
Speaker 2: in the conversation for all pro there's better quarterbacks in
• 1:24
Speaker 2: the AFC, maybe, but I think you're talking about NFC quarterbacks,
• 1:29
Speaker 2: NFC quarterbacks. I think he might be the best one
• 1:31
Speaker 2: in the entire conference. This season, Jaden Daniels was like Gumby.
• 1:36
Speaker 2: He's just in and out of every single play.
• 1:39
Speaker 3: He's taking hits. He bounces right up.
• 1:41
Speaker 2: You thought his knee exploded sixteen times during this game.
• 1:44
Speaker 3: It doesn't matter. He gets up and it keeps on going.
• 1:48
Speaker 3: Jaden Daniels was taking hits in these games. Guys.
• 1:52
Speaker 2: He ran for one hundred and twenty seven yards on
• 1:55
Speaker 2: sixteen carries, but he also threw for two twenty seven
• 1:59
Speaker 2: with three touchdowns. And then this one, Justin Simmons is like, ah, okay,
• 2:03
Speaker 2: I can't hit you, okay, out of the readoption here
• 2:07
Speaker 2: Simmons boom, We're gonna nail you here.
• 2:09
Speaker 3: The big plays at the end, though, are what matters.
• 2:11
Speaker 3: So it's an overtime.
• 2:13
Speaker 2: This is the one I wanted to show because it's
• 2:16
Speaker 2: Ajterrell's got him and Simmons like, you know what, enough already, I'm.
• 2:18
Speaker 3: Gonna nail them and I'm gonna knock it. He doesn't,
• 2:21
Speaker 3: and then they have to make a play.
• 2:23
Speaker 2: They have to make a pass, and Jaden Daniels threw
• 2:27
Speaker 2: a touchdown in the last thirty second of his fifth
• 2:31
  Speaker 2: different game this.
• 2:33
Speaker 3: Season as a rookie. This was the fifth game.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: He threw a touchdown pass and the last thirty seconds
• 2:39
Speaker 2: of a game in his first season.
• 2:41
Speaker 3: I'll end with this, They've got eleven wins.
• 2:43
Speaker 2: Is the first time they've done it since nineteen ninety one.
• 2:47
Speaker 2: They clinch a playoff berth in front of that home
• 2:50
Speaker 2: fan base that has been so scarred and so tarnished
• 2:53
Speaker 2: over the last two decades.
• 2:55
Speaker 3: Take a moment, Washington fans.
• 2:56
Speaker 2: You don't have to sweat out Week eighteen unless you
• 2:59
Speaker 2: want to talk about playoff seedings, which we will. And
• 3:01
Speaker 2: Washington can still make a major jump if they want to,
• 3:04
Speaker 2: or fall back with a loss. And Daniels, you are
• 3:07
Speaker 2: a stud. I'm going to a quarterback, going to Baker Mayfield,
• 3:11
Speaker 2: who after playing his heart out on Sunday night against
• 3:14
  Speaker 2: Dallas and.
• 3:14
Speaker 3: Coming up short, it looked.
• 3:16
Speaker 2: Like things are going awry, and then Baker just decides
• 3:19
Speaker 2: to throw the ball all over field.
• 3:21
Speaker 3: Look at this stat line at the.
• 3:22
Speaker 2: Bottom twenty seven of thirty two for three point fifty
• 3:25
Speaker 2: nine and five touchdowns. But look at the next Gen chart.
• 3:30
Speaker 3: I asked for this.
• 3:30
Speaker 2: You know, I'm not a big stat I love that fit.
• 3:33
Speaker 3: Let's go. I love this though. Look at this chart.
• 3:35
Speaker 2: It is a thing of beauty, green dots everywhere. Deep passes,
• 3:39
Speaker 2: the incompletions are deep, the white ones white.
• 3:42
Speaker 3: The only compensions are ones that are ten yards or Mayfield.
• 3:45
Speaker 2: That's five touchdowns against the Blitz. It's the most in
• 3:48
Speaker 2: a game by any quarterback since Mahomes did it in
• 3:51
Speaker 2: twenty twenty two. Gosh, did I love watching Baker just
• 3:55
Speaker 2: throw the ball all over the art.
• 3:56
Speaker 3: I'll tell you what. Go one step further here. It
• 3:58
Speaker 3: was fantasy championships last week.
• 4:01
Speaker 2: Like you're talking about a lot of owners and fantasy.
• 4:04
Speaker 3: Football wondering do I go with Bake? Do I go
• 4:07
Speaker 3: with someone else? Baker Mayfield were a lot of people.
• 4:09
Speaker 2: Their fantasy football championship this year, and he hit it
• 4:12
Speaker 2: in the biggest of moments. I don't know what's gonna
• 4:14
Speaker 2: happen in the playoffs, but I'll tell you this, Baker
• 4:16
Speaker 2: Mayfield was incredible this regular season.
• 4:18
Speaker 3: And it's not done yet.
• 4:19
Speaker 2: The Bucks haven't clinched that division, but they are one
• 4:22
Speaker 2: went away from doing so.
• 4:23
Speaker 3: Baker we see you.
• 4:26
Speaker 2: I would never count out Baker Mayfield again. I think
• 4:30
Speaker 2: last Sunday Night's loss to Dallas could have been the
• 4:33
Speaker 2: most devastating loss for a lot of teams.
• 4:35
Speaker 3: The Cowboys had already been eliminated.
• 4:38
Speaker 2: Buccaneers just had to win and hold serve and then
• 4:40
Speaker 2: the NFC South would be theirs in their control.
• 4:43
Speaker 3: And they came up short.
• 4:44
Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy, whose team was already eliminated, gets the best
• 4:49
Speaker 2: out of his guys and they beat the Buccaneers, and
• 4:51
Speaker 2: you're like, here we go, same old Buccaneers. And then
• 4:53
Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield answers with the best performance he's had this season.
• 4:58
  Speaker 3: Baker Mayfield's numbers as I.
• 5:00
Speaker 2: Went gaga guey over Sam Darnold a last hour.
• 5:04
Speaker 3: He's the best quarterback in the NFC.
• 5:06
Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield's now set career highs in passing yards with
• 5:10
Speaker 2: four forty seven and passing touchdowns with thirty five. The
• 5:15
Speaker 2: Panthers are a viable opponent. They've got a team that
• 5:18
Speaker 2: fights hard and plays the Buccaneers.
• 5:20
Speaker 3: We're like, no, no, no, no, not today.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: Tampa Bay absolutely rolled and for the second time in
• 5:25
Speaker 2: three weeks, Baker Mayfield put a performance on screen. That's like,
• 5:28
Speaker 2: I'm as good as any quarterback in the NFL. And
• 5:30
Speaker 2: remember we do all this Saquon and Derrick Henry talk
• 5:33
Speaker 2: when we talk about free agents, and Sam Darnold has
• 5:36
Speaker 2: been Ballyhood is the best free agent sign. Baker was
• 5:39
Speaker 2: a free agent this offseason. He signed a one year
• 5:42
Speaker 2: small deal last year with Tampa for four million.
• 5:45
Speaker 3: Any team could have signed Baker for big money.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: The Buccaneers were like, no, let's back up the brink trucks,
• 5:49
Speaker 2: brinks truck and bring back Baker. Do you know how
• 5:52
Speaker 2: hard it is to fill in for Tom Brady? Baker
• 5:54
Speaker 2: Mayfield has not only done it well, he has done
• 5:56
  Speaker 2: it exceedingly well.
• 5:58
Speaker 3: The last two seasons.
• 6:00
Speaker 2: Playoff berth last year, Divisional Round game last year. Sky's
• 6:03
Speaker 2: the limit if the Buccaneers can play this way, and
• 6:05
Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield has been the main reason why.
• 6:07
Speaker 3: Hats off to Baker Mayfield.
• 6:08
Speaker 2: The Bucks now control their own destiny and they will
• 6:11
Speaker 2: be hosting a home playoff game, not the Atlanta Falcons,
• 6:14
Speaker 2: based on the way those two teams perform yesterday.
• 6:18
Speaker 3: What were the Giants doing yesterday?
• 6:19
Speaker 2: Because was there not like a team message that went
• 6:22
Speaker 2: out or did that just exist on the internet. Hell no,
• 6:27
Speaker 2: these are all right, our fifty three men who have
• 6:29
Speaker 2: to provide for their family and the last thing they
• 6:32
Speaker 2: care about is next year's crop of players that are
• 6:36
Speaker 2: to come take their job. Every tweet from these Giants
• 6:39
  Speaker 2: players was incredible.
• 6:41
Speaker 3: Jermaine illumin Or signed a massive contract.
• 6:43
Speaker 2: To me, it's like, thank you to all the Giants
• 6:45
Speaker 2: fans who showed up, like.
• 6:46
  Speaker 3: That's what we're gonna do.
• 6:47
Speaker 2: You're like, at the Giants fan, you're at home, like
• 6:49
Speaker 2: what are you doing? But these players, they've got pride,
• 6:53
Speaker 2: they've got they've got their own names on the back
• 6:56
Speaker 2: of their jerseys. They weren't gonna lay down for anybody.
• 6:58
Speaker 2: And it might set the Giants back four years, honestly
• 7:02
  Speaker 2: it might, but.
• 7:02
Speaker 3: Hey, they got that went over the Colts.
• 7:04
Speaker 2: It might, and we've seen it you in and now
• 7:06
  Speaker 2: it works.
• 7:07
Speaker 3: The only time I remember, I mean, there.
• 7:09
Speaker 2: Was a week sixteen or seventeen game between the Buccaneers
• 7:13
Speaker 2: and the Saints where if the Bucks lost, they got
• 7:15
Speaker 2: Jamis and I remember like the head coach from the
• 7:18
Speaker 2: Buccaneers might have been Dirk Cutter, Like they didn't start anybody,
• 7:21
Speaker 2: and it was like, oh, okay, there are.
• 7:22
Speaker 3: Ways to hand. There are way you can do it,
• 7:24
  Speaker 3: get it done.
• 7:24
Speaker 2: If you've seen it between Texas and Bears yea years ago.
• 7:29
Speaker 3: And then as we see Joe Shane Check and Eric
• 7:31
Speaker 3: woods hand and the Pegulas, you got to understand that
• 7:35
Speaker 3: this is not the NBA. There are no guaranteed contracts.
• 7:38
Speaker 3: And for Drew Locke, of course, I'm.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: Gonna go out there and I'm gonna go gun it
• 7:41
Speaker 2: and I'm gonna go in. Now, let's look at that
• 7:43
Speaker 2: draft order one more time though, because what that did
• 7:47
Speaker 2: was it puts the Patriots in the hot spot and
• 7:51
  Speaker 2: they don't need a quarterback.
• 7:52
Speaker 3: So does New England then trade back? Do they offer
• 7:55
Speaker 3: a bounty to the Giants? Trade up?
• 7:57
Speaker 2: If you're the Titans, are you are you sure with
• 7:59
Speaker 2: your second round pick Will Levice? If you're the Browns,
• 8:03
Speaker 2: you just you just committed to Jamis for two more years.
• 8:06
Speaker 2: Had a crazy big number, but it's not as much
• 8:08
Speaker 2: as it was had you not restructured.
• 8:10
Speaker 3: And this could change, and this could all change next week.
• 8:13
Speaker 3: But like, just look at it this way.
• 8:15
Speaker 2: The Giants of those first three teams are the only
• 8:17
Speaker 2: pure team that absolutely needs a quarterback. Now, mind you,
• 8:21
Speaker 2: the Raiders have won two games in a row, two
• 8:22
Speaker 2: and they're like in the teams now.
• 8:25
Speaker 3: You can't make this up.
• 8:27
Speaker 2: Peter Patriots versus Buffalo, that's gonna be probably Mitch Trubisky Buffalo,
• 8:30
Speaker 2: Like that's a massive game. Yeah, And Jerrod Mayo just
• 8:33
Speaker 2: got absolutely embarrassed on national TV.
• 8:36
Speaker 3: You can't win that. He's playing for his job in
• 8:38
Speaker 3: a lot of ways. You can't lose forty to nothing
• 8:40
  Speaker 3: in that game.
• 8:40
Speaker 2: So I find it fascinating. The damage might not be
• 8:44
Speaker 2: as bad as it felt because those first three teams
• 8:46
Speaker 2: might not be in the market for a quarterback. So
• 8:49
Speaker 2: Shradur Sanders, who wore Giants cleats after the game both
• 8:53
Speaker 2: game and then he got blown out, you can't make
• 8:55
Speaker 2: this stuff up. Every week on this show we hand
• 8:59
Speaker 2: out the Coach of the Week award, and I am
• 9:01
Speaker 2: so happy to give this week's award to the head
• 9:05
Speaker 2: coach in Washington, Dan Quinn. We're head coach of the Week,
• 9:10
Speaker 2: and I'll tell you what, Washington fans are pretty happy
• 9:13
  Speaker 2: with the results.
• 9:14
Speaker 3: This was a big one for DQ. Remember, longtime coach.
• 9:17
Speaker 2: Of the Falcons just came up short twenty eight to three.
• 9:21
Speaker 3: Went to the playoffs. The next year, just came up.
• 9:23
Speaker 2: Short, lost of the Eagles in the playoffs, and dan
• 9:25
Speaker 2: Quinn goes against the Falcons, his former team, and gets
• 9:30
Speaker 2: the Washington Commanders their first eleven win season since nineteen
• 9:36
Speaker 2: ninety one. The cast of characters on this team Bobby Wagner,
• 9:39
Speaker 2: Frankie Luvu, Marcus Mariota, a bunch of veterans, zach Ertz,
• 9:44
Speaker 2: and of course that rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who dan
• 9:48
Speaker 2: Quinton's Day one said is the faiths of our franchise.
• 9:52
Speaker 2: DQ went up against his former assistant Raheem Morris in
• 9:56
Speaker 2: a game that both teams needed, and dan Quinn got
• 9:59
Speaker 2: the best of them.
• 10:00
Speaker 3: DQ against his former team, clinches a playoff.
• 10:03
Speaker 2: Birth and the eleventh win for the Commanders, and did
• 10:06
Speaker 2: so in front of their home crowd.
• 10:08
Speaker 3: Dan Quinn is our coach of the.
• 10:09
Speaker 2: Week quarterbacks, and it's such a cool story for these two. Remember,
• 10:30
Speaker 2: Jared Golf was traded for was essentially a bag of
• 10:32
Speaker 2: footballs and the Rams would pay the Detroit Lions to
• 10:35
Speaker 2: take him off his books. Then Sam Darnold was a
• 10:38
Speaker 2: backup last year in San Francisco and signed for his
• 10:41
Speaker 2: fourth team and did so on a one year deal
• 10:43
Speaker 2: for ten million. And now as we head into week eighteen,
• 10:47
Speaker 2: take a look at the numbers that these two have
• 10:49
Speaker 2: put up through their first.
• 10:51
Speaker 3: Seventeen weeks of the season.
• 10:53
Speaker 2: You were looking at two of the best quarterbacks in
• 10:56
Speaker 2: the entire league, and you could argue the best two
• 10:59
Speaker 2: quarterbacks in the NFC. The numbers tell a story. They're
• 11:03
Speaker 2: all huge, and they're from both sides. Two quarterbacks that
• 11:07
Speaker 2: previous teams well, they thought they could do better.
• 11:10
Speaker 3: Then. The Jets, of course, moved on from Donald.
• 11:13
Speaker 2: The Panthers, of course moved on from Donald. The forty
• 11:16
Speaker 2: nine ers, of course, stuck with Perty and didn't even
• 11:19
Speaker 2: entertain the thought of giving Donald a big deal golf,
• 11:22
Speaker 2: you know his Rams story, played in a Super Bowl,
• 11:25
Speaker 2: and then after things went awry, they said, we're not
• 11:27
Speaker 2: going to get over the top with this guy. They
• 11:28
Speaker 2: went and got Matthew Stafford.
• 11:30
  Speaker 3: Here they are.
• 11:31
Speaker 2: But I want to look more specifically at Donald, because
• 11:34
Speaker 2: Donald's doing something that I think of the last few months,
• 11:38
Speaker 2: has been really excited.
• 11:40
Speaker 3: For this game. They're going to be on the road,
• 11:42
Speaker 3: they're in Detroit, and they.
• 11:45
  Speaker 2: Might be trailing late, and I don't think it's a
• 11:47
Speaker 2: problem because Sam Darnald has done something in the last
• 11:50
Speaker 2: two months that has turned in from being this cool
• 11:53
Speaker 2: story and this former third overall pick who's finally found
• 11:56
Speaker 2: the right coach and team to like the most clutch
• 11:59
  Speaker 2: player in football.
• 12:01
  Speaker 3: Guys.
• 12:02
Speaker 2: Sam Darnald has five game winning drives in the months
• 12:07
Speaker 2: of November and December.
• 12:09
Speaker 3: This is the game in.
• 12:10
Speaker 2: Chicago where he went ninety yards in overtime to get
• 12:13
Speaker 2: his team a touchdown score.
• 12:15
Speaker 3: But it wasn't just that game. They did this in
• 12:17
  Speaker 3: week nine.
• 12:18
Speaker 2: Then in consecutive weeks eleven, twelve, and thirteen they had
• 12:23
Speaker 2: a game winning drive. And there was this one in
• 12:25
Speaker 2: week fifteen in a game that everyone thought, all right,
• 12:28
Speaker 2: the Seahawks, they've lost the game against the Packers, are
• 12:30
Speaker 2: gonna come out and they'll be hot home.
• 12:32
  Speaker 3: They were they.
• 12:33
Speaker 2: Needed it, and Sam Donald's like, I got you, And
• 12:35
Speaker 2: it wasn't check down run play. Sam Donald throws his
• 12:39
Speaker 2: team to victory in all these games, five game winning ones,
• 12:42
Speaker 2: and then we don't even count last week's. But you
• 12:45
Speaker 2: go to week seventeen. The Packers are having this furious
• 12:48
Speaker 2: comeback and Donald has to make a play and it's
• 12:51
Speaker 2: third and two and Donald goes back and it's like,
• 12:53
Speaker 2: all right, I've got to drop it right in the
• 12:55
Speaker 2: bucket and cam Akers is there, and that doesn't even
• 12:58
Speaker 2: count as a game winning or game tying drive. It
• 13:01
Speaker 2: counts as Oh, here's Sam Donald just doing what he does,
• 13:05
Speaker 2: getting the play done. Donald has been so good in
• 13:09
Speaker 2: these fourth quarters, and I think if it comes down
• 13:12
Speaker 2: to them being down laid against Detroit or them being
• 13:15
Speaker 2: down ten points laid against Detroit, I think it's an
• 13:18
Speaker 2: extra gear that the Vikings have found in Darnald.
• 13:20
Speaker 3: And it's not let's run the.
• 13:21
Speaker 2: Ball to victory and let's just trust our defense. It's
• 13:24
Speaker 2: this play here, a rollout on third and two that
• 13:26
Speaker 2: he does hit the guy. I'm excited for the quarterback matchup.
• 13:30
Speaker 2: I love both their stories. I think they're so emblematic
• 13:33
Speaker 2: of both these franchises.
• 13:34
Speaker 3: And their fan bases.
• 13:36
Speaker 2: But I'm also really excited to see if the Vikings
• 13:38
Speaker 2: are down late, if Sam Darnald can do it one
• 13:41
Speaker 2: more time and secure that number one seed. Jamie, it's
• 13:44
Speaker 2: a quarterbacks league, and the Vikings and the Lions they
• 13:46
Speaker 2: both have them. One of my favorite segments we do
• 13:51
Speaker 2: on this show is the Fab five. It celebrates the
• 13:53
Speaker 2: best rookie performances of the week, and I can say
• 13:55
Speaker 2: this objectively, this was the best week of rookie performances
• 13:59
Speaker 2: this show has ever seen.
• 14:00
Speaker 3: The list was so long we had to narrow it down.
• 14:03
Speaker 2: To five players that there will be people at home
• 14:05
Speaker 2: who are out raged not seeing one of their team's
• 14:08
Speaker 2: best performances included on the list. Let's start righting number five.
• 14:11
Speaker 2: And I always love the quarterbacks. I think it's the
• 14:13
Speaker 2: hardest job in sports. And Michael Pennock and a loss
• 14:16
Speaker 2: was absolutely fantastic. We have to give our flowers to
• 14:19
Speaker 2: Michael Pennix junior the performance that he had and in
• 14:22
  Speaker 2: big spots.
• 14:24
Speaker 3: This team was down in.
• 14:25

Speaker 2: the Falcons on a fourth and goal from the thirteen
• 14:41

• 17:03
Speaker 2: that dog in him and who does not care about
• 17:06
Speaker 2: the future a team's draft order, but just wanted to
• 17:09
