Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case underwear listening to podcast, you
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by first, like creating proven versatile
- 0:24Speaker 1: hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear for
- 0:28Speaker 1: every hunt. First like go farther, stay longer. Okay, Rosemary,
- 0:36Speaker 1: tell me where where did we just spend the last
- 0:39Speaker 1: two weeks? Alaska? Okay? What were we doing? We were fishing? Uh?
- 0:47Speaker 1: Did you know that? In um? Did you know that?
- 0:50Speaker 1: In the book? Like the book I most recently had
- 0:54Speaker 1: come out, which is called Outdoor Kids in an Inside World,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I write a lot about how you kids like to
- 1:02Speaker 1: spend a lot of time flipping rocks over? Can you
- 1:08Speaker 1: and your own words? Would you mind explaining to me
- 1:13Speaker 1: why it is you like to spend so many hours
- 1:16Speaker 1: flipping rocks over on the shoreline because there's sculpting under
- 1:23Speaker 1: some rocks, and then after you see the scope and
- 1:25Speaker 1: you hit them with rocks, and then what do you
- 1:28Speaker 1: guys like to do with those? Like tell some of
- 1:30Speaker 1: your favorite ways, like tell well, first off, how big
- 1:33Speaker 1: is the sculpen um? Like, I don't know, the average
- 1:38Speaker 1: size is like two inches, but they get pretty big,
- 1:42Speaker 1: about as long as your finger, Yeah, bigger than that,
- 1:46Speaker 1: bigger than your fingers. And then when you cook them up,
- 1:49Speaker 1: how do you like to cook them up? Um, over
- 1:52Speaker 1: a fire? And then why are you guys you smash
- 1:56Speaker 1: them with rocks? What's what's that about? To kill to
- 2:00Speaker 1: put them out? Are there things you find that you
- 2:02Speaker 1: don't that you just find and then look at and
- 2:05Speaker 1: let go? What do you mean, like the crabs for instance,
- 2:10Speaker 1: that you find? Yeah, what's the most surprising thing you
- 2:15Speaker 1: ever found under a rock you flipped over? Um? Probably
- 2:20Speaker 1: a scope and that was all white that had like
- 2:23Speaker 1: had like this really long nose. Oh, and then he
- 2:26Speaker 1: came and told showed him to me like you thought
- 2:28Speaker 1: something was maybe wrong with him. M hmm. Um did
- 2:32Speaker 1: you find many of those little eels? Those gunwalfish? How
- 2:38Speaker 1: many years have you been flipping rocks over at that place? Well?
- 2:42Speaker 1: What when's the first time that I ever came here?
- 2:44Speaker 1: How old was I like a little baby, like a
- 2:46Speaker 1: little kid? Then like six years? And uh? Have you
- 2:53Speaker 1: noticed any trends over time? Does it feel like it's
- 2:57Speaker 1: the same or does it feel like over time it's changed?
- 3:01Speaker 1: With what you find under those rocks, Like, is it
- 3:04Speaker 1: one year real good for scalpiens and the next year
- 3:08Speaker 1: it's really good for crabs? Is it pretty much like
- 3:10Speaker 1: those rocks never change? Those rocks never change. You feel
- 3:13Speaker 1: it's pretty consistent? All Right, I'm gonna ask your brother something, Jimmy,
- 3:19Speaker 1: how much to what degree do you would you go
- 3:21Speaker 1: with Rosy on that? Um? I would say that the
- 3:26Speaker 1: amount of scalping and like crab the dungeoness that you
- 3:32Speaker 1: find out in the deeper water right outshore at super
- 3:36Speaker 1: low tide definitely varies from year to year. Some years
- 3:40Speaker 1: you'll find uh, some years it will be really really
- 3:44Speaker 1: good for big scalpen they'll be in. It's kind of
- 3:47Speaker 1: just the two different streams. Was that? Like, were you
- 3:52Speaker 1: disagreeing with that? Okay, Okay, you don't buy it? Yeah?
- 4:00Speaker 1: Do you think it's consistent? Um? But you're not gonna
- 4:06Speaker 1: take debait? Are you? She's wrong? Um? The big scoping
- 4:13Speaker 1: are either in uh, there's since there's two streams there
- 4:17Speaker 1: either in one of the streams we found some there's
- 4:21Speaker 1: never really really big ones like seven inches long in
- 4:27Speaker 1: the farthest right stream. They're always in the they're always
- 4:32Speaker 1: in the left stream. It always seems to be where
- 4:35Speaker 1: we find the big ones because it's underneath a lot
- 4:37Speaker 1: of help. It is a lot of help, and it's
- 4:39Speaker 1: more for the area for the bigger ones to hide,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and it's a lot uh slower moving water, and I
- 4:45Speaker 1: think they like that more too. And then the other
- 4:47Speaker 1: one is a lot is rocky, very shallow water, and
- 4:50Speaker 1: I think the big ones like they're being a little
- 4:52Speaker 1: more wider area. Like That's why if you had to
- 4:55Speaker 1: pick between um, salmon fishing and flipping rocks and picking
- 4:59Speaker 1: up scolpens, what you pick um, I'd say salmon fishing. Uh,
- 5:05Speaker 1: And I'd say the reason I like salmon fishing so
- 5:09Speaker 1: much is because you kind of like, you know, you're
- 5:12Speaker 1: if you go to the nope, we'll bleep it out,
- 5:17Speaker 1: we'll bleep it out going if you go to the
- 5:19Speaker 1: fun salmon fishing. When you go to when you go
- 5:22Speaker 1: to the salmon spot, um, you either you're dedicated to
- 5:28Speaker 1: fishing salmon or catching flounder if you drop your jig
- 5:33Speaker 1: down and try to hit the bottom little spoon. But
- 5:36Speaker 1: what I also think it's fun about that is seeing
- 5:40Speaker 1: the sea lions, seals, all those other creatures and uh
- 5:47Speaker 1: knowing that there could be anything down there in the
- 5:49Speaker 1: deeper water. Do you want to do you mind sharing
- 5:52Speaker 1: with people what you got in trouble with what you
- 5:55Speaker 1: got in trouble about yesterday. It actually happened earlier while
- 5:59Speaker 1: you were gone, but you got trouble about it yesterday. Oh. Um,
- 6:03Speaker 1: So I was so like absent minded about changing my
- 6:12Speaker 1: clothes for like two weeks. So mother, when I can
- 6:19Speaker 1: packed his clothing, she was quite shocked to find that
- 6:23Speaker 1: all of the socks and underwear, we're still in these
- 6:25Speaker 1: socks and underwear. That's impressive. Two weeks. That impressive. The
- 6:32Speaker 1: only time I changed my clothes is when because my
- 6:34Speaker 1: mom took this oh what are I called? Oh, took
- 6:39Speaker 1: a vacuum sealer, put um my clothes and a vacuum
- 6:44Speaker 1: sealer like some clean clothes and just vacuum seal it up.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And that was for the flight home. For the flight home,
- 6:50Speaker 1: that's the only time I changed my clothes. You discovered
- 6:54Speaker 1: kind of a hot tip while you're up there about
- 6:55Speaker 1: how to prepare for an early morning wake up call.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Can explain that hot tip to people. You just sleep
- 7:01Speaker 1: in your clothes, keep your rain jacket in rain hands,
- 7:05Speaker 1: hanging up outside with your hat and then you just
- 7:09Speaker 1: step out ready to go. You're already dressed. It's a
- 7:13Speaker 1: good idea. Yeah. The comedian hit Chip, Mitch Edburgh had
- 7:15Speaker 1: an idea that he was gonna get his clothes made
- 7:17Speaker 1: out of blankets, so when he laid down at night,
- 7:20Speaker 1: he's already there. You go for bed, Rosemary. That's my
- 7:25Speaker 1: last question for you, buddy, ready if you had to,
- 7:29Speaker 1: what's your favorite thing about the fish shacket. What's one
- 7:32Speaker 1: area that you could see for improvement at the fish shack?
- 7:35Speaker 1: M hmm. My favorite thing about it is come up
- 7:39Speaker 1: here and say yes, just like you're eating ice cream cone. Okay.
- 7:43Speaker 1: My favorite thing about it is you eat ice cream
- 7:46Speaker 1: cones that far away. Okay. My favorite thing about it
- 7:53Speaker 1: is um okay. And what's the area that you think
- 7:58Speaker 1: could be a lot better about the fish shack? Mm hmm.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Maybe get a new little like outhouse like house thing
- 8:07Speaker 1: not so there's not so many spiders, Oh, spiders in
- 8:12Speaker 1: the outhouse. Okay. And Jimmy got one more question for you.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Seth Seth's a frame there, Seth Kelsey's a frame. Uh,
- 8:21Speaker 1: what's your take on that place? Um? How would you
- 8:25Speaker 1: rate the amount of work they did on that place.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I would say they did nine out of ten on
- 8:31Speaker 1: getting everything ready. Um, I say that when they got there,
- 8:38Speaker 1: it looked like a grizzly bear took her two cubs
- 8:43Speaker 1: and destroyed everything in that house. And then it hadn't
- 8:46Speaker 1: been touched for five years, which is grizzy bear part
- 8:49Speaker 1: didn't happen, but the other part did it, and they
- 8:53Speaker 1: got it whipped into shape. They made it look really good. Okay, Okay,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I appreciate you guys coming giving us a download. Man.
- 9:01Speaker 1: One last thing and I'm all done. You guys go
- 9:04Speaker 1: about your business. You came in here and sat right
- 9:07Speaker 1: in that seat, and you and me told a story
- 9:11Speaker 1: about a thing that happened to us where we had
- 9:14Speaker 1: a real close call. What did you think of that?
- 9:17Speaker 1: You think people should check that out? Yeah? Um, a
- 9:22Speaker 1: lot of love went into that podcast. You guys can
- 9:28Speaker 1: run along. You guys are great. Why did I get
- 9:32Speaker 1: to tell my Turkey story? He said I would tell
- 9:36Speaker 1: my Turkey story. You said I would. Oh you want
- 9:39Speaker 1: to tell turkey story? Yeah? Rosie. Also you you were
- 9:45Speaker 1: eager to tell you wanted to tell a story about
- 9:47Speaker 1: something to happen to you. Okay, let it. Let's hear it.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I want to hear it. So we were in a
- 9:53Speaker 1: turkey hunting stand because we were turkey hunting in Texas
- 9:58Speaker 1: at my dad's friends place, and um uh, there's like
- 10:02Speaker 1: a bunch of turkeys that came along and my dad
- 10:04Speaker 1: was like, oh, that's a bearded hen and I was
- 10:07Speaker 1: like cool. So then um my brother was like, oh,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I want to shoot it, and I was like, well,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I want to shoot it because you got you got
- 10:18Speaker 1: first turn on wild pigs and I got first shot
- 10:24Speaker 1: on turkeys. So I took a very long time to aim,
- 10:32Speaker 1: but then I shot it. It was bearded hend. What's
- 10:36Speaker 1: my mommy's new nickname, bearded buddy? Are you ready to
- 10:47Speaker 1: go a good? All? Right? We are not in Alaska.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I pointed that out only because we're supposed to be
- 10:58Speaker 1: in Alaska. We're sadly not in Alaska. You really want
- 11:02Speaker 1: to know why we're not in Alaska because we had
- 11:05Speaker 1: to come back podcast because Seth left it like he
- 11:11Speaker 1: left a day early and when I went looking for him,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I couldn't find him. So we're recording back in our
- 11:16Speaker 1: studio se Fault and he knew I when I got there,
- 11:28Speaker 1: I said, just so you know, I have the podcast kit,
- 11:34Speaker 1: and he was like, yeah, we'll get to it. Well,
- 11:37Speaker 1: I was waiting to build up experiences. I took that
- 11:39Speaker 1: as he will come find me when it's time, and
- 11:43Speaker 1: then you let the clock tick out, and then and
- 11:45Speaker 1: then left the day early. Steve decided that it was
- 11:48Speaker 1: time to record. After you were gone out of time.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I went looking for him. I couldn't find him. M hmmm, Listen,
- 11:56Speaker 1: it's tough to it's tough to find a time for
- 11:59Speaker 1: that kind of stuff up there. Career long days. Yeah,
- 12:03Speaker 1: there's a lot of a lot of stuff that needs
- 12:06Speaker 1: uh sorry, Seth and Kelsey, and then Kelsey's brother and
- 12:12Speaker 1: your her brother's Kelsey's here, Seth, Seth, now wife, that's here.
- 12:18Speaker 1: That's great wedding, isn't. When I got up into the wedding, Yeah,
- 12:20Speaker 1: you did a good good job. Um, A lot of
- 12:22Speaker 1: people still talking about it. These two are married. Uh.
- 12:27Speaker 1: They bought a shack next to our shock And what
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think it's endlessly funny is that. Uh. When I
- 12:37Speaker 1: was up there this June, I looked up and something
- 12:39Speaker 1: seemed different, and I realized that the entire front porch
- 12:44Speaker 1: had fallen off of the house ye, and crumbled into
- 12:50Speaker 1: the yard. It's funny because when we bought the thing,
- 12:54Speaker 1: we had made all these jokes about how it would
- 12:57Speaker 1: be great even if it fell over. Even if falls over,
- 13:00Speaker 1: it's a good idea, and it actually kind of fell over. Yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 1: it's rough, man. I do want to talk to you
- 13:07Speaker 1: guys a little bit about shack shack ownership, which we're
- 13:11Speaker 1: gonna which which I want to get into in a
- 13:12Speaker 1: little bit. Uh, couple things getting up top. Then we
- 13:16Speaker 1: got a whole bunch of stuff we gonna cover. Bro.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Do you got like a Grizzly report and a Wolf report? Uh? Yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I can't do both. Good doll sheet report. I crashed
- 13:25Speaker 1: out though Wolf. That's all right, lots of new, lots
- 13:29Speaker 1: of news to cover off on. Uh first though, up top,
- 13:32Speaker 1: So culdn't have we already dropped We already dropped the story,
- 13:36Speaker 1: right cam Kurt Connell's on last week's episode. Yeah, that's
- 13:40Speaker 1: that's my standing. But to reiterate camp fire stories too,
- 13:45Speaker 1: So we did. If you remember back, if you you
- 13:49Speaker 1: faithful listeners, if you remember back, you remember we did
- 13:51Speaker 1: an episode where we closed the episode um with a
- 13:55Speaker 1: story by Sam Laurie where it was called The Mud
- 13:59Speaker 1: Puddle about a game or and in pursuit of a
- 14:01Speaker 1: sociopathic elk poacher, and that was Metators, camp Fire Stories,
- 14:08Speaker 1: Close Calls. Well, the follow up to that collection is
- 14:11Speaker 1: out now which is called Meat Eaters, camp Fire Stories,
- 14:15Speaker 1: Narrow Misses and more Close Calls, and it includes lots
- 14:20Speaker 1: of good stuff. So we got I mean, you're hear
- 14:23Speaker 1: from the people involved. A couple of guys stranded on
- 14:27Speaker 1: an ice cake in the Arctic Ocean with a polar bear.
- 14:31Speaker 1: A guy who had a shoot at his own friend
- 14:33Speaker 1: to save his life. A guy whose life was saved
- 14:37Speaker 1: by his dog after he blew himself in the leg.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Duck hunting. Oh goes on and on. It's got more
- 14:46Speaker 1: blood in it than It's like a Quentin Tarantino movie.
- 14:50Speaker 1: The amount of bloodshed. I have not listened to it yet,
- 14:54Speaker 1: and that's making me just what you said, there's making
- 14:56Speaker 1: me excited to the bloodshed, isn't it. It's like it's
- 15:00Speaker 1: like a lot of it. But see here's the thing
- 15:03Speaker 1: I like to point out. It's called narrow misses the
- 15:05Speaker 1: more close calls. So it's they all have happy endings.
- 15:10Speaker 1: It was if they had all died. I point out
- 15:13Speaker 1: that it would be hard to make the recording with them,
- 15:17Speaker 1: very hard. Uh. The other day, the kids like that,
- 15:20Speaker 1: I don't know if you're there. Uh. The kids like, shoot,
- 15:23Speaker 1: twenty two's at the shack and they're supposed to always
- 15:26Speaker 1: verify that no one's in the outhouse. Not that the
- 15:28Speaker 1: outhouse is down range, but it's like off to the side.
- 15:33Speaker 1: And Jimmy shot and someone yelled from the outhouse, and
- 15:36Speaker 1: then he got in trouble. But then the person came
- 15:38Speaker 1: out and said, if you kill me, I'll never talk
- 15:41Speaker 1: to you again. Um, there's a near miss with starting
- 15:49Speaker 1: to fire there. Oh yeah. Jimmy's cousin burn singed all
- 15:53Speaker 1: his hairs. I have watched that. It was harrowing that
- 15:57Speaker 1: the hair in his head or his base were trying
- 16:01Speaker 1: to use an accelerant to get a fire going. A
- 16:06Speaker 1: lot of lessons are learned at the check I think
- 16:09Speaker 1: we get in trouble. People get in trouble for various things.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I don't know i'd be lying about said people didn't
- 16:14Speaker 1: get in trouble up there for various things. To save
- 16:16Speaker 1: space to less it looked like a special effect at
- 16:19Speaker 1: a concert. So a lot of bloodshed but happy endings.
- 16:27Speaker 1: It's like, it's a riveting collection of story. So we
- 16:29Speaker 1: go out and be comb we we go. We use
- 16:32Speaker 1: our listener network in other places to find great stories.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And one of the things we talk about in the
- 16:36Speaker 1: collection is how many stories come to us from people's kids.
- 16:41Speaker 1: People right in and be like, you have to try
- 16:43Speaker 1: to get my dad to tell X story. Um, and
- 16:47Speaker 1: it's out now. It's called me Eaters, camp fire stories,
- 16:51Speaker 1: narrownesses and more close calls. I don't know how many
- 16:53Speaker 1: hours is this A lot of hours? Six six hours
- 17:00Speaker 1: of listening. It's a Penguin Random House Audio original. The
- 17:07Speaker 1: last one debut on the bestseller list for audio. This
- 17:11Speaker 1: one is riveting. I think you'll love it, and I
- 17:14Speaker 1: hope everybody goes and checks it out. I don't think
- 17:17Speaker 1: we have immediate plans to drop another episode, to drop
- 17:21Speaker 1: another story on this show. But refer back if you're
- 17:25Speaker 1: if you're titillated, go back to last week's episode or
- 17:27Speaker 1: whatever the hell, go back to what was the episode called.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Go back to if there's letting the air, there's hoping
- 17:32Speaker 1: the heart, and scroll to the end, or listen to
- 17:35Speaker 1: the whole damn thing. Whatever suits you and listen to
- 17:38Speaker 1: the story the best shot of My life to give
- 17:41Speaker 1: you an idea of what you will find in this
- 17:43Speaker 1: audio collection. But you got a road trip drive to work.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Whatever this thing is, it's like we kind of sweat
- 17:51Speaker 1: it out over, you know, like a podcast a little
- 17:52Speaker 1: bit free form. This is it's like we sweat it
- 17:55Speaker 1: out over every second of this thing. It is very
- 17:58Speaker 1: very carefully crafted. Um, I'm sure you will love it
- 18:03Speaker 1: if you go and check it out and give it
- 18:05Speaker 1: a listen. UM. Also first episode of our new culinary

- 20:28Speaker 1: hosted by Kevin Gillespie, which is launching right now. Alright,
- 20:33Speaker 1: so we're gonna move on now to something we've talked
- 20:35Speaker 1: about a whole whole shipload on this show, and that
- 20:38Speaker 1: is the now infamous, the famous Wyoming Corner crossing case
- 20:42Speaker 1: where some hunters went from public land to public land
- 20:48Speaker 1: and stepped over a section corner and got in trouble
- 20:52Speaker 1: for having their shoulders having passed through the air above
- 20:56Speaker 1: someone's private property. That we followed this case exhaustively. So
- 21:00Speaker 1: an episode, the most recent one we we we touched
- 21:03Speaker 1: on a while ago and we had an episode called
- 21:06Speaker 1: all All Up in Your Airspace. More recently, episode three
- 21:09Speaker 1: forty two, we had an episode called getting Busted for
- 21:12Speaker 1: Touching Air In it. We through our advocacy of these
- 21:18Speaker 1: hunters who are fighting these civil and criminal cases against themselves,
- 21:24Speaker 1: we've helped drive a lot of people to go to
- 21:27Speaker 1: a go fund me site which is Defending, which is
- 21:30Speaker 1: a legal defense fund for these hunters. Okay, as we
- 21:36Speaker 1: covered when we had him on, so these guys are
- 21:37Speaker 1: from Missouri. We had the Missouri guys out here in
- 21:39Speaker 1: the podcast studio and did this episode with them. At
- 21:42Speaker 1: the time they had finished up their criminal case. They
- 21:45Speaker 1: were not guilty in their criminal case, but they have
- 21:50Speaker 1: a civil case now brought up against them, and the
- 21:53Speaker 1: civil case is going to get The civil case could
- 21:57Speaker 1: really help set the precedent for this because if these
- 22:00Speaker 1: guys cross a corner again, never stepping on private land,
- 22:05Speaker 1: they're placing one foot in public land on one section
- 22:09Speaker 1: and they're placing the other foot in public land on
- 22:11Speaker 1: the other section. In these guys case, they actually used
- 22:14Speaker 1: a ladder. One side of the ladder was on public land,
- 22:17Speaker 1: the other side of the ladder was on public land,
- 22:20Speaker 1: and the act of climbing over their ladder, their body
- 22:24Speaker 1: passed through some like corners of private airspace and that
- 22:27Speaker 1: was criminal. Um. Of course, what's at stake here is
- 22:32Speaker 1: the landowner is very much wanting to have that landlocked
- 22:37Speaker 1: public land all to themselves. They don't want public they
- 22:40Speaker 1: don't want the public on the public land because they
- 22:42Speaker 1: can control access to it. But what they're pretending is
- 22:45Speaker 1: they're pretending that they're worried about this little piece of
- 22:49Speaker 1: airspace for a half second that someone passes through it.
- 22:54Speaker 1: For the civil case, the guys need and if you
- 22:57Speaker 1: if you listen regularly the podcast, so we followed us
- 22:59Speaker 1: and followed us for this civil case. The guys need
- 23:03Speaker 1: get this. It's a big gass for everybody. Um, we
- 23:07Speaker 1: will go in and and I feel like we'll probably
- 23:10Speaker 1: will probably take money out of our land Access initiative.
- 23:12Speaker 1: We've talked to Calahan about this, take money out of
- 23:15Speaker 1: our land Access initiative fun and kick in. So we're
- 23:17Speaker 1: putting our money where our mouth is and we'll do that. Uh.
- 23:20Speaker 1: These guys need another thirty five dollars alright, they need
- 23:24Speaker 1: up quick and they're gonna need another ten down the road. Uh.
- 23:33Speaker 1: A friend of ours m wey, I mean Jared oakleyf
- 23:35Speaker 1: who's helped keeps the prize of the whole thing, is
- 23:37Speaker 1: even offered up like they got some ideas. Um, we've
- 23:41Speaker 1: talked about maybe auctioning off the ladder. What's funny is
- 23:46Speaker 1: one of these guys as a fence builder. It's my
- 23:48Speaker 1: favorite detail. He's a fencing building, so him being intimate
- 23:53Speaker 1: with fences made a ladder to get over the fence.
- 23:55Speaker 1: We talked about making shirts. Corner crossing ain't a crime whatever.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Doing a book signing event. He's throwing these things out
- 24:03Speaker 1: like a suppose out to me. Me doing a book
- 24:05Speaker 1: size and a book signing event in Jackson Hole, whatever
- 24:07Speaker 1: it is. We gotta raise money for these guys. It's
- 24:10Speaker 1: an easier U R L at the go fund me
- 24:13Speaker 1: now though, why O corner dot com? So why now? Sorry?
- 24:17Speaker 1: From the top, w y O corner so w y
- 24:23Speaker 1: O c O R N E R dot com. And
- 24:27Speaker 1: that's where you can go find the go fund me
- 24:30Speaker 1: site to help fund these guys legal defense. Now, what's
- 24:34Speaker 1: that stake? What's that stake? Is this? There are multiple
- 24:38Speaker 1: Western states that are pretty hazy about whether or not
- 24:42Speaker 1: corner crossing is legal or illegal. In in Montana, for instance,
- 24:48Speaker 1: they recommend against it right, and it's generally been widely
- 24:52Speaker 1: understood to be not allowable, But the tide is turning
- 24:56Speaker 1: and people are getting educated about this issue. It would
- 25:00Speaker 1: open up millions of acres of public land. Whatever happens
- 25:08Speaker 1: that these dudes in court, okay, in the civil case,
- 25:12Speaker 1: then they get fined or whatever. Like whatever happens these
- 25:14Speaker 1: guys isn't gonna change the law, Okay, but it's gonna
- 25:20Speaker 1: if they can prevail, it's gonna really make people question
- 25:27Speaker 1: trying to prosecute people for the practice. So this isn't
- 25:31Speaker 1: like us U. S. Supreme Court case is gonna once
- 25:33Speaker 1: and for all decide the fate of legal of corner crossing.
- 25:37Speaker 1: But if they can throw the book at these dudes
- 25:39Speaker 1: the way they have and put the energy and money
- 25:42Speaker 1: into trying to prosecute these guys for crossing over a
- 25:45Speaker 1: little teensy weensy bit of private property airspace while hunting
- 25:49Speaker 1: public land, the next guy is gonna be like, I'm
- 25:53Speaker 1: not going near that ship with a ten foot poll
- 25:56Speaker 1: because we already saw what will happen. It's like, these
- 25:59Speaker 1: guys can probably pull it with the right legal defense.
- 26:02Speaker 1: These guys can pull together and beat the civil case.
- 26:06Speaker 1: And it's like it's like it's it's a it's a
- 26:09Speaker 1: slow battle that needs to be waged. This is it's
- 26:13Speaker 1: a slow war that needs to be waged. This is
- 26:15Speaker 1: a battle in the war. Is getting these guys off
- 26:19Speaker 1: of these charges that they're facing. It doesn't end it,
- 26:25Speaker 1: but it goes a long way towards helping it. The
- 26:27Speaker 1: next real big battle I want to pick up, and
- 26:30Speaker 1: this is a big one, is I want to pick
- 26:31Speaker 1: up um taking on in my home state of Michigan. First,
- 26:37Speaker 1: getting Sandhill crane. That's the that's the that's the white whale.
- 26:44Speaker 1: The first step one is getting Sando sand Hill crane
- 26:47Speaker 1: season from Michigan. Step two is the white whale, which
- 26:52Speaker 1: is a Michigan dove season. But first the corner crossing
- 26:55Speaker 1: problem has to be addressed. Then fourth is getting wildlife
- 26:59Speaker 1: management and yells a national park handed to the states
- 27:01Speaker 1: of Wyoming and Montana and turning into wilderness area. Let's
- 27:04Speaker 1: take care of all Sunday hunting. But let's and then
- 27:09Speaker 1: a universal orange hat law. Used to be very anti orange.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I think it should be a national like it's like
- 27:18Speaker 1: an orange hat and orange that's what that's what wil does.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Orange hat. Yeah, I'd be fine with that orange hat
- 27:27Speaker 1: during big game, big game rifle orange hat down. And
- 27:31Speaker 1: I don't want to have the feds up like I
- 27:34Speaker 1: don't want to have I don't want to take that approach.
- 27:38Speaker 1: What I want to do is come up with a
- 27:39Speaker 1: case so compelling that the states willfully adopt it because
- 27:44Speaker 1: they're like, no, there's an idea. Yeah, be a hard
- 27:47Speaker 1: experiment to run. I think I talked about this, but
- 27:51Speaker 1: my kid got a costed ice fishing by a guy
- 27:53Speaker 1: who is mad at him because his dad thinks you
- 27:56Speaker 1: should be able to hunt yellowstone. I'd like to find
- 28:00Speaker 1: that guy beat as well as little took us. Uh
- 28:05Speaker 1: So if that's you, let me know. Um, in the
- 28:09Speaker 1: end it will be of the Wyoming corner crossers. It
- 28:12Speaker 1: will have required It doesn't sound that it's like depends
- 28:15Speaker 1: on how you look at it doesn't sound that bad.
- 28:19Speaker 1: In the end, it will be that it costs. So
- 28:21Speaker 1: the three Wyoming corner crossers, um they're legal defense will
- 28:28Speaker 1: have been about twenty six and a half thousand per hunter. Yeah. Meanwhile,
- 28:34Speaker 1: the taxpayers of Carbon County, Wyoming have footed the other
- 28:38Speaker 1: side of the bill over something that they probably aren't
- 28:40Speaker 1: that worked up about four on behalf of a out
- 28:45Speaker 1: of state landowner. You know what we should do? You
- 28:48Speaker 1: know that show law and Order. We should have a
- 28:51Speaker 1: media produced version of lade Order. This would be make
- 28:54Speaker 1: a good movie. That's a good idea. You could do
- 28:57Speaker 1: poaching cases and those of your end shootout du dunt
- 29:01Speaker 1: dunt and that that the song. No it's not, it's
- 29:04Speaker 1: like courtroom drama. Drama. Phil will just take that record
- 29:14Speaker 1: and yeah, I already got d so big, big heads
- 29:28Speaker 1: up on that man as much as people can do.
- 29:30Speaker 1: And like I said, I'm gonna like, did you make
- 29:32Speaker 1: a note to go tell cal that we gotta you know,
- 29:35Speaker 1: I actually already just emailed the both of you, not yet,
- 29:39Speaker 1: I mean I literally sent it one minute after you
- 29:42Speaker 1: first said it or less. I'll put uh this do
- 29:50Speaker 1: you read this out out? Well, read it first, then
- 29:53Speaker 1: read it out loud. You'd like it if he says
- 29:55Speaker 1: hello from his iPhone, I'm not opposed to that would
- 29:59Speaker 1: be well w fit to get the ball rolling. There
- 30:01Speaker 1: you go, see job cry, it's great producing live on
- 30:07Speaker 1: the air. Wildfire season just starting now, and holy cow, man,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I just wanted to discuss the two bits of Alaska news.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Um three million acres in Alaska. You know, when you're
- 30:31Speaker 1: trying to describe how big something is, you always like
- 30:34Speaker 1: you always talk about how it compares the Connecticut or
- 30:36Speaker 1: Rhode Island or something. I get a little bit burned
- 30:38Speaker 1: out on that. But they've burned an area the size
- 30:43Speaker 1: of Connecticut. If you look at a map of everything
- 30:46Speaker 1: in Alaska, it's on fire. Is They have fires from
- 30:53Speaker 1: everywhere from the from if you imagine the Brooks Range line, Okay,
- 30:59Speaker 1: from from west to east and down. The whole state
- 31:03Speaker 1: is dotted with fires. Even one out in the Allusians Aways.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Southeast Alaska full of fires. Oh my goodness, that little island,
- 31:12Speaker 1: holy ship. Them fires like a couple of days ago,
- 31:20Speaker 1: massive my uh my bro Danny was going taking his
- 31:23Speaker 1: boat to go mushroom hunting, had a different fire and
- 31:26Speaker 1: had to cancel because of new fires. New fires were
- 31:29Speaker 1: keeping him fro getting to the old fire, just cranking.
- 31:37Speaker 1: That's crazy. I never like picture Alaska burning that much.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I was one time hunting um on the north slope
- 31:46Speaker 1: of the Brooks Range and we were hunting cariboo, and
- 31:49Speaker 1: way off you can see this tundra fire. Oh really,
- 31:53Speaker 1: you know, And it was cold as ship. It was
- 31:56Speaker 1: October snow ice. And one day we walked over and
- 32:00Speaker 1: you can just stand next to the slowly moving tundra fire.
- 32:03Speaker 1: It won't go out till the snow puts it out.
- 32:05Speaker 1: You know, you can stand there and warm up real good,
- 32:08Speaker 1: but you have to walk a mile and a half
- 32:09Speaker 1: to get there. But you can walk a mile and
- 32:11Speaker 1: a half over there, away from camp, away from the river,
- 32:14Speaker 1: and go get warmed up as you wanted to be
- 32:16Speaker 1: at the tuns of fire, and then come back to
- 32:19Speaker 1: where we were camped on a graph bar and freeze
- 32:20Speaker 1: your ass. It's like a mile and a half, you know,
- 32:24Speaker 1: a mile and a half to walk over there and
- 32:25Speaker 1: get your hands warmed up. Yeah, every time I'm up there,
- 32:27Speaker 1: it's just like raining, So it's kind of hard to
- 32:32Speaker 1: One of the things that's driving a lot of that
- 32:33Speaker 1: fire is the beetle kill. Oh yeah, right, so they
- 32:39Speaker 1: had like the whole like you know, the Keynai Peninsula
- 32:43Speaker 1: was almost like denuded of of of spruce, right, and
- 32:49Speaker 1: so in a lot of places the fires are that
- 32:51Speaker 1: beetle killed cooking off. Yeah, that's what led to a
- 32:53Speaker 1: lot of Did you notice going fires in Colorado too?
- 32:56Speaker 1: Did you know, going in to catch can um, a
- 33:00Speaker 1: lot of their hillsides are turning brown? Nope, I as
- 33:04Speaker 1: advanced what he thought it was. He wasn't sure. He
- 33:06Speaker 1: said it might be from light snowpack the Oh really yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 1: apparently the cold temps will um freeze the roots. Got it.
- 33:19Speaker 1: I guess the snowpack help prevents that. I don't know.
- 33:22Speaker 1: That's just I don't know for sure. But in all fairness,
- 33:27Speaker 1: Alaska burned. So here's the other years that Alaska on
- 33:31Speaker 1: record has burned three million acres. Like I had a
- 33:33Speaker 1: three million acre fire season. Now the weird thing is
- 33:36Speaker 1: fire season just getting going right, So they're already at
- 33:39Speaker 1: three millions. They burned three million in two thousand five,
- 33:42Speaker 1: they burned three million in two thousand four, they burned
- 33:46Speaker 1: three million in nineteen sixty nine, nine fifty seven, in
- 33:51Speaker 1: nineteen fifty and that's when accurate accounting of acres began.
- 33:55Speaker 1: So it's not like unprecedented, it's not unknown, but things
- 34:00Speaker 1: are just getting started. A lot of fire burning. Oh
- 34:07Speaker 1: here's a good transition. You don't even build this in
- 34:11Speaker 1: the size of Connecticut has burned. The other day, we
- 34:14Speaker 1: were talking about Connecticut and we're saying, what do they call?
- 34:17Speaker 1: You just wrote that in the script. You didn't say
- 34:21Speaker 1: how here's a cool transition, says speaking of Connecticut. A
- 34:31Speaker 1: few so a few episodes ago, we covered off on
- 34:34Speaker 1: Mountain Lions in Connecticut, and someone wrote in about truthers
- 34:37Speaker 1: and deniers, and we're talking about connecticutors or whatever they
- 34:41Speaker 1: call them. Two people wrote connecticutens. Two people wrote in
- 34:48Speaker 1: to say that what they're called is nutmegers. That settles it.
- 34:54Speaker 1: There's apparently there was a problem in Connecticut once upon
- 34:58Speaker 1: a time where you take a little chunk of would
- 35:00Speaker 1: and carve yourself a fake nutmeg for what reason, so
- 35:07Speaker 1: then pawn it off on some unsuspecting person. And they
- 35:11Speaker 1: actually had to ban the practice of whitland fake nutmegs
- 35:14Speaker 1: to sell to people, and they're called nutmeggers. My old man,
- 35:19Speaker 1: here's a hot tip for you. My old man in
- 35:22Speaker 1: World War two, he was for a while, he was
- 35:25Speaker 1: stationed in North Africa, and he said, they made a
- 35:27Speaker 1: lot of money smuggling. Nope, you get a carton of smokes. Story,
- 35:34Speaker 1: you get a carton of smokes. Uh. The locals we're
- 35:41Speaker 1: dying for American cigarettes. Loved American cigarettes. So my dad
- 35:46Speaker 1: would say, you get a carton of smokes, and you'd
- 35:48Speaker 1: pack it full of sawdust and then you'd put two
- 35:52Speaker 1: real packs on the end. And then when you stopped
- 35:57Speaker 1: on the trains, never being transported. You'd hold the cart
- 36:00Speaker 1: and out the window and haggle over the price. And
- 36:06Speaker 1: you'd haggle over the price of the carton cigarettes until
- 36:08Speaker 1: the train was ready to start moving, at which point
- 36:11Speaker 1: in time the deal would be finalized. You would then
- 36:14Speaker 1: hand them though sawdust packed carton smokes and take the money.
- 36:19Speaker 1: And then you were like a bad person. He became
- 36:23Speaker 1: a but he I don't know how he justified it,
- 36:27Speaker 1: but he would tell that story like he's quite proud
- 36:29Speaker 1: of himself. Just a swindler. Ah, yeah, Nutmegger's um which
- 36:39Speaker 1: is also apparently a soccer move. What's the move you're asking, Steve? Yeah,
- 36:46Speaker 1: if he knows, if he if he knows that it's
- 36:48Speaker 1: a or is that from the email? He goes on
- 36:51Speaker 1: to say, I would note that nutmeg not only refers
- 36:53Speaker 1: to the aromatic spice, but can refer to the act
- 36:56Speaker 1: of passing a soccer ball between an opponent's legs to
- 36:59Speaker 1: a team eight or oneself. I just found out my
- 37:02Speaker 1: kid's gonna play soccer in the fall. A little bumped
- 37:08Speaker 1: your falls over. Uh, you know the cam? How do
- 37:13Speaker 1: you pronounce that peninsula? Ive never been there. I'd like
- 37:15Speaker 1: to go there. Cam chaka, cam chacta. I think it's that. Yeah,
- 37:21Speaker 1: cam chacka cam choco. There's a there's a vodka. Call that.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Russia's Alaska. A Russia's Alaska. It's a peninsula the size
- 37:30Speaker 1: of California has like steelhead runs. I know that they got. Yeah,
- 37:34Speaker 1: they got steelhead runs. They got like great hunting, moose hunting,
- 37:37Speaker 1: brown bear hunting. Uh A helicopter. This was interesting. This
- 37:43Speaker 1: was interesting because we just had it. We recently did
- 37:45Speaker 1: an episode with a biathlete helicopter being flown by a
- 37:51Speaker 1: well known Russian biathlete. I goor Melanovsky. You think it's Igor.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Gotta be Igor? Or let's not like speaking? Little dead
- 38:03Speaker 1: Igor Malinovski was flying with a couple of business men,
- 38:08Speaker 1: one named Zoya and one named Sergey. July Sergey, how
- 38:22Speaker 1: did you ask him? No, that's how you pronounced those names,
- 38:27Speaker 1: Sara and Igor. Helicopter crash and then they found This
- 38:35Speaker 1: is the crazy part. They found the bodies way far away,
- 38:40Speaker 1: consumed by bears. The bears drugged the bodies out of
- 38:45Speaker 1: the helicopter, mold him and consumed him far away. Do
- 38:48Speaker 1: we know that they were alive when the bears found.
- 38:50Speaker 1: That's my question. It says it was seen to be
- 38:52Speaker 1: a fiery crash. It is. Here's this is a quote.
- 38:57Speaker 1: It is believed the corpses we're dragged away mald and
- 39:02Speaker 1: eaten by wild bears that populate the region. One of
- 39:06Speaker 1: the highest densities of brown bears on Earth on that peninsula,
- 39:12Speaker 1: and estimated ten thousand to fourteen thousand bears live in
- 39:15Speaker 1: the peninsula. So that's about the population estimate for brown
- 39:19Speaker 1: bears and grizzly bears and all of Alaska. And they're
- 39:22Speaker 1: placing that on a California sized chunker ground, way more
- 39:25Speaker 1: than Western United States. That's nuts. You know, that suck
- 39:30Speaker 1: to survive that that crash and then get mauled by bears,
- 39:36Speaker 1: would be stuck there in mobile out of the helicopter.
- 39:40Speaker 1: You're like, who survived that? One big bear comes And
- 39:44Speaker 1: that's the kind of story I wouldn't put in close calls. Hey,
- 39:47Speaker 1: count you couldn't do it. I asked Paul Schommer, our guest,
- 39:52Speaker 1: and he was on episode three seven a Gold Medal podcast,
- 39:56Speaker 1: if he knew Igor and he said he did know
- 40:00Speaker 1: him personally, He definitely knew of him. And then he
- 40:03Speaker 1: said that the situation is classic Russia. You can't just
- 40:07Speaker 1: be a helicopter crash. You had to involve a bear
- 40:11Speaker 1: as well. So it's like the one thing that will
- 40:13Speaker 1: maybe more classic is involved bottle of vodka. Yeah. Maybe
- 40:18Speaker 1: we're not sure if bottle was recovered from the scene
- 40:22Speaker 1: or not. Okay, Brody hit us with hit us with um.
- 40:26Speaker 1: The latest Grizzly report, the latest this was bound to happen,
- 40:30Speaker 1: report happen Grizzly report. If you're not familiar, there's a
- 40:34Speaker 1: very famous grizzly bear in the Jackson, Wyoming area Grand
- 40:40Speaker 1: Tita National Park area bear three books written about it.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Who's that photographer that made her famous? Mangelsson. He's one
- 40:50Speaker 1: of the guys that applied for member. They had to
- 40:52Speaker 1: draw for grizzly bear tags. He drew and then wasn't
- 40:55Speaker 1: going to use his tag. Oh he was trying to
- 40:57Speaker 1: draw it and throw it into the garbage if you want. Anyway,
- 41:00Speaker 1: he was real worried about this bear getting shot. Um.
- 41:04Speaker 1: These bears h are constantly in contact with humans in
- 41:09Speaker 1: the Jackson area. UM roads get closed down for them
- 41:15Speaker 1: when they're in neighborhoods. Things like that, and uh, what
- 41:19Speaker 1: data this take place on a couple of weeks ago.
- 41:23Speaker 1: It looks like, um, so mid July one, she had
- 41:27Speaker 1: four cubs that she basically they're they're raised to adulthood,
- 41:31Speaker 1: there would be adults. She's going to get rid of
- 41:33Speaker 1: them this year. So two years old, I'm guessing. Um,
- 41:37Speaker 1: and one of the cubs, a male, was killed by
- 41:44Speaker 1: fish and game officials. Fort recorded conflicts human human bear
- 41:50Speaker 1: conflicts and they finally had to kill that bear too
- 41:55Speaker 1: keep people safe. Basically are people having a total connection
- 41:58Speaker 1: about it. Um, it's incredibly unfortunate. Photographer, author, and bear
- 42:04Speaker 1: advocate Tom Mangelsson said the latest incident. Um, I'm sure
- 42:08Speaker 1: down there, but but that's the reality. Like, I think
- 42:12Speaker 1: a lot of people don't realize how many grizzlies across
- 42:16Speaker 1: the Western United States end up being you know, they
- 42:20Speaker 1: like to say euthanized by fish and game officials. I
- 42:23Speaker 1: mean it's probably I have no idea dozens and dozens
- 42:26Speaker 1: of bears end up getting shot by fishing game officials.
- 42:30Speaker 1: So I'm sure people are working over a course of time, yeah, yeah,
- 42:35Speaker 1: but yeah, a bunch of years. Ye yep. So, and
- 42:39Speaker 1: this one seems like it was it was just bound
- 42:42Speaker 1: to happen um fishing game officials fishing Wildlife Service officials
- 42:48Speaker 1: say they continue to ask for the help of residents
- 42:50Speaker 1: and visitors to secure attractants around homes, rental properties, and businesses.
- 42:56Speaker 1: The actions of those living and visiting bear visiting grizzly
- 43:00Speaker 1: bear country main vital. So it's like, you know, typical stuff.
- 43:05Speaker 1: It's a a fed bear is a dead bear kind
- 43:08Speaker 1: of thing. Moving on down to a uh. Someone wrote
- 43:12Speaker 1: and needed advice on an ethics issue. This is this
- 43:18Speaker 1: is the thorn. This is a thorny one because it
- 43:21Speaker 1: it becomes likely it's like one of those places where
- 43:23Speaker 1: legal and more like legality and morality collide. Do you
- 43:28Speaker 1: feel like it's not an easy answer for you. No,
- 43:31Speaker 1: it's not easy. When I read this, I thought maybe
- 43:33Speaker 1: for some people it would be well, like I said,
- 43:36Speaker 1: it's morality and legality and and and I'll get it.
- 43:40Speaker 1: I'll get into I'll get into it a little bit.
- 43:44Speaker 1: This guy says, I have a question for the consideration
- 43:46Speaker 1: of the podcast brain Trust in shore. If you encounter
- 43:49Speaker 1: a wounded animal of your target species, so that's important,
- 43:53Speaker 1: a wounded animal of your target species while hunting, what
- 43:56Speaker 1: would you do harvest it, or let it walk away
- 44:00Speaker 1: and wait for a healthier alternative. I'll tell you I've
- 44:05Speaker 1: done every variation um in the in the not so
- 44:12Speaker 1: distant past, I have, and I wouldn't now because I'm
- 44:16Speaker 1: just more I when when I felt there was a
- 44:22Speaker 1: moral issue that collided with a legal issue, I would
- 44:25Speaker 1: go on the moral issue side. That's what I would
- 44:27Speaker 1: generally have done in the past. I have in my
- 44:31Speaker 1: day killed two mangled up deer wild deer hunting that
- 44:37Speaker 1: I did not tag. Mangled up meaning shot by hunters
- 44:40Speaker 1: and wounded. One had been shot and lost, and one
- 44:43Speaker 1: had been hamstrung by coyotes and somehow made probably maybe
- 44:48Speaker 1: in the water, made it out to a little teeny island.
- 44:51Speaker 1: And I found it on this little teeny island mostly dead,
- 44:55Speaker 1: but not all the way dead. Mostly dead. So my
- 44:59Speaker 1: thinking was, um, it's gonna die, It's gonna be here dead, uh,
- 45:08Speaker 1: And I shot it left it. Another time, I was
- 45:11Speaker 1: sitting there and I'm sitting in this bottom of this
- 45:14Speaker 1: coolie like more like a like a tight little box
- 45:18Speaker 1: canny thing, and down comes a deer with her back
- 45:23Speaker 1: ham shot out a lot of exposed meat, exposed bone,
- 45:28Speaker 1: all packed with dirt. It didn't happen, just like minutes
- 45:31Speaker 1: those days days old. Also, no way, shape or form
- 45:36Speaker 1: was it gonna live. I shot that dear so so
- 45:42Speaker 1: I didn't take the first one. I just shot and
- 45:44Speaker 1: left it. I shot that dear and cross the line
- 45:50Speaker 1: because I ate a backstrap off it, but did not
- 45:54Speaker 1: we ate a backstrap. That night, I shot a wounded
- 45:57Speaker 1: meal with their buck once and tagged it. You did it,
- 46:00Speaker 1: I did, and I've and I've done that. We even
- 46:02Speaker 1: did an episode I was hunning. Cused you one time
- 46:04Speaker 1: and shot a wounded couised your buck and then met
- 46:07Speaker 1: the guy that had shot it was He was still
- 46:09Speaker 1: up looking for it, but he was as glad that
- 46:12Speaker 1: I got it and I kept it. I tagged it
- 46:13Speaker 1: because he had shot it three days pride. I think
- 46:17Speaker 1: a lot of people like take this stance that morally
- 46:21Speaker 1: they're obligated to do it because they assumed the animals
- 46:24Speaker 1: gonna die this horrible death. But deer can survive some
- 46:29Speaker 1: pretty brutal stuff like there. When back when I lived
- 46:32Speaker 1: in Pennsylvania, there was a dough that was all had
- 46:35Speaker 1: been shot on one of her front legs, and for
- 46:38Speaker 1: years and years she was in the same field, you know,
- 46:40Speaker 1: across the street from my friend's house. They called her,
- 46:42Speaker 1: of course tripod. But like that deer got shot in
- 46:45Speaker 1: the leg and lived for years, And you know, I
- 46:47Speaker 1: think people just assumed they're going to die this horrible death,
- 46:50Speaker 1: you know, and the incidences on top about maybe it's
- 46:54Speaker 1: more I'm not thinking of it wasn't gonna live. Now
- 46:57Speaker 1: I did it, and it's like I did that. You
- 47:00Speaker 1: can't do that if you could kill it and tag
- 47:03Speaker 1: and if you have a vale, tag, but you can't
- 47:05Speaker 1: do it. Now, my thinking evolved on it, for like,
- 47:08Speaker 1: if I was in a similar sitution, right situation, right now,
- 47:11Speaker 1: Here's why I wouldn't. I wouldn't because one like I
- 47:16Speaker 1: might not totally agree with the law, but I understand
- 47:20Speaker 1: why it's there, and I don't want to sort of
- 47:23Speaker 1: like take on. I don't want to sort of like
- 47:26Speaker 1: challenge the whole the foundation of the regulatory structure by
- 47:31Speaker 1: saying if you don't agree with it, it doesn't matter. Yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 1: The second thing is is you'd be like if you
- 47:39Speaker 1: see what it's been shot by a gun, you'd be like,
- 47:41Speaker 1: well that's not natural, right, or like humans did that.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Humans should finish the job. But then you're sort of
- 47:48Speaker 1: saying that, like like hunting, the hunting the species is unnatural, right,
- 47:54Speaker 1: just as Kyle's might chew it up and it gets away,
- 47:56Speaker 1: a hunter might shoot and it gets away. Um, so
- 48:01Speaker 1: now I wouldn't. But but but to be clear, the
- 48:03Speaker 1: primary reason that wouldn't I wouldn't want to. I don't
- 48:06Speaker 1: want to like get fined and getting all kinds of
- 48:08Speaker 1: trouble for doing it. Yeah, just keep it. And it's
- 48:14Speaker 1: just like no, it's like not, it's not worth it
- 48:16Speaker 1: enough to me. And I get why they have it,
- 48:19Speaker 1: because it's like you're trying to limit Um, you know,
- 48:24Speaker 1: there's not a ton of room and that when it
- 48:27Speaker 1: when it comes to like the tagging process and the
- 48:29Speaker 1: regulatory structures and tag allocations, there's not it's not built
- 48:33Speaker 1: in for a lot of like personal decision making. Yeah,
- 48:37Speaker 1: it's I mean you've got to follow some pretty clear
- 48:39Speaker 1: cut rules that are already confused. I mean they're clear cut,
- 48:44Speaker 1: but they can be confusing as of what you're allowed
- 48:46Speaker 1: and what you're not allowed to do. And if you
- 48:49Speaker 1: don't shoot one, you know you're not going to get
- 48:52Speaker 1: in trouble for anything. You can always call your State
- 48:56Speaker 1: Game Agency, if you have a cell if you have
- 48:58Speaker 1: a cell synal. I've heard still words of um guys
- 49:02Speaker 1: calling gay warns about that kind of stuff, and they say,
- 49:05Speaker 1: you can dispatch it. I'll be there, like make sure
- 49:09Speaker 1: you're there when I get there. But like sometimes they'll
- 49:13Speaker 1: give you permission to do that. That will happen a
- 49:15Speaker 1: lot with road kill or you know, deer that are
- 49:18Speaker 1: injured by car, someone would give you permission to put
- 49:20Speaker 1: it down. The one that i've so, I've accidentally shot
- 49:24Speaker 1: wounded stuff right into his wounded and later found out
- 49:26Speaker 1: I was wounded. You killed a bard had been wounded.
- 49:28Speaker 1: You know, I was wounded the deer I shot. I
- 49:31Speaker 1: knew it was wounded, but I knew it wasn't wounded
- 49:33Speaker 1: that bad. Like that deer would have survived. They had
- 49:35Speaker 1: been hit in the ankle bone and shattered its ankle bone.
- 49:40Speaker 1: But he was getting around pretty good. I could see
- 49:42Speaker 1: he had a weird little limp right and I and
- 49:45Speaker 1: I got him, like like realistically, I probably wouldn't have
- 49:50Speaker 1: got him if he hadn't been injured, because he's just
- 49:52Speaker 1: kind of doing a weird thing. He's like crossing a
- 49:53Speaker 1: hillside of a weird time. Everything about it just seemed
- 49:56Speaker 1: like a little off, like why he was where he
- 49:59Speaker 1: was when he was, you know, it just seemed off.
- 50:03Speaker 1: But I could see he had a little limp. I
- 50:04Speaker 1: didn't know what it was like out there was like, oh,
- 50:06Speaker 1: he'd been shot. And then not long after I butchered it,
- 50:12Speaker 1: here's a guy on a hill coming down my way
- 50:15Speaker 1: and he's had spent days looking for it. To his credit,
- 50:19Speaker 1: and he didn't try to contest my putting my tag
- 50:22Speaker 1: on it. He was happy as hell. He just wanted
- 50:23Speaker 1: to know it and finally put it, put it to rest.
- 50:26Speaker 1: But that deer was totally fine, like ate the whole deer,
- 50:29Speaker 1: no problem. One of the things you get into, like
- 50:31Speaker 1: these other deer on top about There's no way I
- 50:33Speaker 1: would have, like I ate a backstrap off one. If
- 50:36Speaker 1: I had to do it and then just put my
- 50:38Speaker 1: tag on it, I wouldn't have done it because I
- 50:39Speaker 1: wouldn't wanted all that compromised. I wouldn't want all that
- 50:41Speaker 1: compromise me in exchange for what I could get, which
- 50:44Speaker 1: would have been like something better. And I'll point out
- 50:47Speaker 1: both the ones I'm talking about were does. But I
- 50:52Speaker 1: was in illegal dough area. Anyways. Yeah, I think it
- 50:56Speaker 1: just comes down to personal decision, and there's no right
- 51:01Speaker 1: or wrong right. If you want to burn your tag
- 51:03Speaker 1: on it, go for it. If you don't, you're not
- 51:05Speaker 1: obligated to. Oh here's another one of these narratives, little stories.
- 51:10Speaker 1: I was sitting there with Yannie one time in Colorado,
- 51:12Speaker 1: you remember this, and I catch a lifetime. I catch
- 51:16Speaker 1: a glimpse of Buck coming and all I see is
- 51:19Speaker 1: he's got antlers hanging down around his jaw. As I'm
- 51:25Speaker 1: looking through the brush, he's way off, but here's a deer.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I look, and I could see antlers around his jaw,
- 51:31Speaker 1: and I'm thinking, if he's got that, I mean the
- 51:32Speaker 1: antlers around his jaw, imagine how many he's got on
- 51:35Speaker 1: top of his head. So I said, holy ship, buck
- 51:40Speaker 1: of a lifetime, only to realize it was a little
- 51:43Speaker 1: dinky buck who just got hit by a cart. His
- 51:46Speaker 1: head gear and his skull cracked, and his antlers hanging
- 51:50Speaker 1: down around his jaw, and he had nothing up top.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Yanni never Yanni still teaches me about and have a
- 51:58Speaker 1: buck of a lifetime. But we tried to go after
- 52:00Speaker 1: him and get get him, and he gave us a slip,
- 52:04Speaker 1: but he I don't know what was gonna happen to him.
- 52:06Speaker 1: A lot of times those that happened, those type of injuries,
- 52:10Speaker 1: they survive. That's yeah, that's the final bit for this
- 52:14Speaker 1: for this listener's right. And then it is like the
- 52:16Speaker 1: final bit to consider is they can live through some crazy,
- 52:21Speaker 1: crazy stuff. They can live through stuff you would never
- 52:25Speaker 1: live through. I remember going to a deer process when
- 52:29Speaker 1: I was a kid in Baldwin, Michigan, and this guy
- 52:31Speaker 1: had not a coffee can. He had coffee cans full
- 52:37Speaker 1: of broadheads that he'd pulled out of here. Yeah, I
- 52:40Speaker 1: shot a bull one time that had a bullet lodge
- 52:42Speaker 1: in it, like in his backstrap right next to the spine.
- 52:45Speaker 1: And I mean it had to have been years ago. Yeah,
- 52:48Speaker 1: I had that elk verde bro that's healed around a problem.
- 52:53Speaker 1: There's no way that that wasn't limping for some period
- 52:57Speaker 1: of time after that happened. And some guy could have
- 53:00Speaker 1: been like I should put them under. Well, that bull
- 53:02Speaker 1: went on to live, So I'd put it this way.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Remember a long time ago and we covered the saying
- 53:12Speaker 1: where Florida was doing a mortality study on deer and
- 53:18Speaker 1: they were trying to advise hunters how to how to
- 53:21Speaker 1: there they were advising hunters on how to behave toward
- 53:23Speaker 1: deer that they're wearing a GPS collar, and they're saying,
- 53:31Speaker 1: don't shoot it because it has a GEP This is
- 53:34Speaker 1: They're like, this is a mortality study. We're trying to
- 53:36Speaker 1: study what kills dear, including hunters, and they're saying to people,
- 53:41Speaker 1: don't shoot it because it has a GPS collar. But
- 53:46Speaker 1: then don't not shoot it because it has a GPS collar.
- 53:51Speaker 1: They're like, try if you can to do what you
- 53:56Speaker 1: would normally do when you see a deer with a
- 54:00Speaker 1: GPS collar, because they're trying to find out like what
- 54:03Speaker 1: actually kills dear. So my advice on wounded stuff would
- 54:07Speaker 1: probably be if it's like you really want it and
- 54:14Speaker 1: it's wounded, go for it, but don't feel obligated to
- 54:19Speaker 1: do it. Here's another one, right for another one says
- 54:25Speaker 1: I sure could use your help in solving a marital issue.
- 54:28Speaker 1: My wife thinks I'm dumb. I don't know's right any
- 54:34Speaker 1: more information. He goes on, Oh, this is good for
- 54:39Speaker 1: you Pennsylvania boys. Growing up hunting in central Pennsylvania, I've
- 54:43Speaker 1: grown accustomed to referring to animals with the same singular
- 54:47Speaker 1: and plural name. Sure, because in many cases you should
- 54:52Speaker 1: one dear too, dear right that dear those dear Yeah,
- 55:00Speaker 1: one bear, two bears, bear says really, so he says,
- 55:12Speaker 1: he goes that, He says this one dear too, dear,
- 55:15Speaker 1: one bear to bear, one dove, many dove, et cetera.
- 55:21Speaker 1: I like to think that I'm consistent. Squirrel, rabbit, turkey, fish,
- 55:24Speaker 1: you name it. He goes to the same program. In
- 55:26Speaker 1: my opinion, if it's multiple animals of one species, the
- 55:31Speaker 1: logical thing to do is to refer to them with
- 55:33Speaker 1: the same singular and plural word. Now he goes on.
- 55:39Speaker 1: My wife whole hardly disagrees with me, and has taken
- 55:42Speaker 1: to polling friends and family alike on this particular issue.
- 55:46Speaker 1: The bear versus bears conundrum has become somewhat of a
- 55:50Speaker 1: de facto party game at this point, and are ever
- 55:54Speaker 1: expanding sample size. One thing seems clear, no one has
- 55:58Speaker 1: the answer and everyone's usage is different. So in your
- 56:04Speaker 1: expert opinions, what is correct? Please tell my wife. I'm
- 56:08Speaker 1: not dumb. Thanks Dan, How with your wife? I don't
- 56:14Speaker 1: think it's like it's like it's not one thing or another. Well, no,
- 56:19Speaker 1: there's no consistency. I think it's a usage thing. I
- 56:22Speaker 1: would never say. I know guys growing up, they'd say
- 56:25Speaker 1: I saw a two buck totally. Yeah, it's like very
- 56:30Speaker 1: much like I don't know if it's regional or time
- 56:34Speaker 1: or ended, but yeah there it's like a way people
- 56:36Speaker 1: talking this fella Dan and I grew up in the
- 56:39Speaker 1: same county. Probably how do you know that, Well, he says,
- 56:43Speaker 1: central Pennsylvania with Helva County, Center count Center County Pennsylvanians. Oh,
- 56:53Speaker 1: that's about as central as it gains. Everyone talks like
- 56:55Speaker 1: he does. Yeah, they saw two buck. I don't think
- 57:00Speaker 1: that's right, Like like I know people do it. I
- 57:06Speaker 1: think it would be I saw. I would never say
- 57:08Speaker 1: I saw two deers. Right from a grammar teacher's perspective,
- 57:13Speaker 1: I saw one, I saw one deer, I saw a
- 57:19Speaker 1: couple dear. I would say that I saw two deer.
- 57:24Speaker 1: I saw two deers. Yeah, I would say I saw
- 57:26Speaker 1: I saw one deer, I saw two deer, I saw
- 57:29Speaker 1: a couple of deer. I would then go on to
- 57:31Speaker 1: say I saw one bear, I saw a couple of bears,
- 57:36Speaker 1: I saw two bears. I saw two bucks, I saw
- 57:41Speaker 1: two doughs, but I only saw one deer. I saw
- 57:45Speaker 1: three deer. Two of them were doughs. Or you caught
- 57:50Speaker 1: one perch, or you caught a mess of perch not purchasing.
- 57:55Speaker 1: We used to joke about that, I'd like to return
- 57:57Speaker 1: this purchase when you caught a perch you didn't want. Uh. Yeah.
- 58:03Speaker 1: In central Pennsylvania, it's common to be like Salk saw
- 58:07Speaker 1: a few buck today a couple of dolls. Is there
- 58:12Speaker 1: actually an answer? I think it's just like like I said,
- 58:16Speaker 1: it's it's grammatically Yeah, I think there is. But regionally
- 58:20Speaker 1: they'd be like, go to hell. This is how we talk.
- 58:24Speaker 1: I'm trying. I wish I could give the rule. I
- 58:27Speaker 1: think that if you went to like Harold Bloom, is
- 58:30Speaker 1: he dead? I'm not sure. Okay, you went to Nome Chomsky,
- 58:36Speaker 1: who's actually trained as a linguist before he became an activist.
- 58:40Speaker 1: You went to Harold Bloom and Noam Chomsky, we are
- 58:43Speaker 1: both dead. No, did Nome Chomsky pass away? Either way?
- 58:48Speaker 1: You go to a linguist, he's hanging on it. You
- 58:51Speaker 1: go to a linguist for Harold Bloom over Noam Chomsky, No,
- 58:55Speaker 1: Chomsky is a conspiracy theorist. Did you know that he's
- 58:59Speaker 1: still alive? Like he's like a big critic of American
- 59:04Speaker 1: exceptionalism and all that. That's different from I'm not going
- 59:08Speaker 1: to go to him. I'll go to Harald Bloom. Uh.
- 59:12Speaker 1: And when you asked them, I think they're going to
- 59:14Speaker 1: tell you that it's it's it's that you saw one deer,
- 59:19Speaker 1: you saw two deer, you saw one bear, you saw
- 59:22Speaker 1: two bears. But then again, there's a picture of you know,
- 59:28Speaker 1: a bunch of crabs on the wall, and you could say,
- 59:30Speaker 1: and there's a bunch of crab in that bucket, a
- 59:34Speaker 1: lot of crab. You can say that a lot of crab. Yeah,
- 59:40Speaker 1: it's not a good back. That's a lot of shrimps. No,
- 59:44Speaker 1: you wouldn't know, Forrest Gump. Might you know what can
- 59:48Speaker 1: you can? You contact the linguist at some local university
- 59:52Speaker 1: or something to find out, Yeah, record them giving the answer. Uh,
- 59:58Speaker 1: contact someone from penn State, you know her seasons Central Pennsylvania.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Do that if you can contact the linguist or a
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: handful of them and record them saying what they think.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Why what I'm saying is true? Is true? I guess
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: who was born in Pennsylvania. Uh. One of my favorite
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: quotes from my friend Matt is uh, I'm giving us
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: for listeners so they can use it too. Someone explains
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: something to my friend Matt and he said, I don't
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: know why that's not true, but that's not true, which
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: I use all the time because it feels like there's
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: no way that's true. I like, I haven't looked it
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: up for anything, but there's no way that's true. So
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: we could probably say this guy is not dumb, but
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: he's not right either. Devid don't think he's dumb. Okay,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: we gotta give him. We gotta give him an answer.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Far as I know his whife's dumb, he's the one
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: that wrote it, and he wrote a well worded thing.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Think it's a matter of dumbness. I think it's a
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: matter of rightness. Mm hmm, Mike, But she went dumber
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: and stump. I don't know. She hasn't written a letter
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: in you're going to get one after that. Oh, speaking
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: of grammar, Uh, I don't know. I haven't seen one yet.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Like literally, Sam James just told me they're live like
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: they hit today. Do you guys remember when a guy
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: wrote in and we had a good laugh because he
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: wrote in a letter about it was like basically like
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: sexual violence among turkeys, and it was a long letter
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: that was all one sentence, and Mark Kenyon said, Mark
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Kenyon was in the studio and Mark said, you ought
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: to put that on a shirt. And that's what we did.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: My new favorite shirt inspired by episode three story slash
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: sentence gets a little dark, doesn't all. It's violent. It's
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: dark and violent. It's a one sentence story still in stock.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: It's one thing, never ending sentence about sexual violence among turkeys.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Maybe the best one sentence story ever. It involves necrophilia.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Do you send that fella? So we've published his it's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: necro it's everything you don't want your kids to get
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: involved when they grow up, all on one T shirt.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: We published like the whole his whole letter in a
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: very small script on a shirt which is called the
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Turkey Letter T Shirts Letter T shirt, the most kind
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: of horrifying letter we've ever gotten published on a T
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: shirt in very small letters. But if you look carefully
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: with if you get a little reading glass or like
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: a little magnifier, get real close to it, you'll be
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: able to read a story that is will curl your hair. Yeah,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: if you go on the website, you can zoom into
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: it and see it. Can you read the story of
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: you zoom in on the website? You can? This is
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: just like a screen grab. Yeah, dude, I'm gonna live
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: in it. Shirture having a shirt with a lot of
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: writing that no one will ever know what it is,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: literally no pictures. Stephen, I had this argument, Hunter Hunter,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: like Drew this really awesome, A little like small Turkey
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: car too, like the eyes. I think just the text
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: is better. Want to just the text? What I really
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: would be cool if it was on the front and
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: the back because then someone behind you on the plane
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: because you need to read the story. I'm not gonna
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: think you're some kind of weird stick you want to
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: limit who? You want to limit who actually gets to
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: read the shirt, and when it's up front, you can
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: monitor what's going you. Please stand still for five minutes
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: so I can read your shoe. If you're just blast
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: through the grocery store, people are gonna be like, my god,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: I just caught a sentence of holy cow right now.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: It's alarming. Great t shirt The Turkey letter t shirt
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: at the mediator dot com Oh, you can read the
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: whole Yeah, they're not, they're not. We got it, We
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: got yeah. Yeah, dude gonna live in that shirt. But seriously,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: everyone can read that passage if they just put their
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: little mouse over the paragraph, I can read the whole thing. Wow,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: you should sound magnifying glass and it comes with a
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: stick so you can beat off people trying to read
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: your T shirt. Oh, Kelsey, here's the thing I gotta
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: ask you before we get into your your last experiences.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Um half a finger wrote us a letter you donated.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Just tell you tell the story, um, Jim. Actually, I
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: had no idea that this was a thing until he
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: pitched it to me. But the Western Association of Fish
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: and Wildlife Agencies, I think they have a think I
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: spoke to that or one time. Did you They have
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: a yearly get together. I think I think Oklahoma City.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Well maybe it moves every year. I'm not sure. But
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: this year was in Oklahoma City and they had an
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: art show as part of the event, and it was
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: a juried art show where people would send in UM
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: their pieces and it would be judged and then the
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: pieces would be auctioned off to benefit the organization. So
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: he put that on my radar, and I sent in
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: three prints to the show and they sold for a
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: bunch of money. Yeah, they sold, and um I actually
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: won Best Show for with one of my pieces, which
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: is cool. It's a nice little resume builder. Um. So yeah,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: all around, great experience and I wouldn't have known about
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: it if not for him. So great, Thanks Jim, And
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: he'll be on the show soon. We're having helf a
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: finger prey so yeah. Yeah, I've never met him. He
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: sounds such a great guy. One of the smartest dudes
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: on the planet. Mat Yeah, he was awesome. He was
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: updating me on the event, like every couple of hours,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: sending me an email. Tell tell people about your gallery
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: in three forks. You don't want to tell him about it? No,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: I would love to. I like it that someone came
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: in and asked if you were married to me? Yeah no,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: but I'm married her. As I said, I was like no,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: thank you to somebody else. Um, I get people in
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: all the time asking about me eater and like podcast fans,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, are the neighbor the neighbor? Yeah yeah. Um
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: it's funny because I actually I went full time and
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: as an artist after our Alaska trip last year. I
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: had decided I had I set it up like this
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: was real sweet. I had decided that I was going
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: to put in my two weeks at my job before
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: we went from egg from egg to artists to artists,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: but I hadn't told them. So I went on the
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: trip like just in the best mood. No, and I
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: had that in my back pocket. But anyway, Um, I
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: went full time last year and then in November we
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: moved to Three Forks, the town of Three Forks, Montana,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: And in January I opened up my own studio and
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: gallery there right off Main Street. So and it's been great.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: It's an awesome space. And do people so people just
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: come in and buy stuff? Yeah? So do most days
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: you make a sale? Yeah? Yeah. I would say it's
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: pretty consistent, at least one every day. It's nice because
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I don't. I used to work from home, um, which
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: I never realized how distracted you can get working at home.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: So everybody always asked me, like, is it distracting having
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: people come in because I'm painting or drawing the entire
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: eight hours a day that I'm open, but people can
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: come in. It's actually less distracting. People come in. Then
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: it would be to just like work at home and
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: you know, go do the laundry or take the dog
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: for a walk. It's it's go time when I'm there,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: regardless of whether people are in or not. Give people
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: your Instagram handles and go look at it so they
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: can see your art. It hard. Stuff is mind blowing.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: Everythank you. It's k Underscore Ray Artworks and Ray is
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: r A. Why did you come up with something so
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: hard to remember? I don't think it's hard to remember.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: I couldn't use my last name. I was anticipating getting
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: married at some point when I started my business, so
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: raise my middle name. Made that happens. Said if he's like,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: if you didn't want to change your name, He's like, well,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: then let's just stay boyfriend girlfriend, all right. That was
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: never said during the time that I was deciding whether
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: to change my name or not. That was only brought
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: up after where he's like, well, I tell you what
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: I would have done. Yeah, if that he would have,
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: he would have had it be Mrs Seth Morris's art gallup.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: So you're down there painting away, and people if they
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: come down there, you're in there painting away. Yeah, it's
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: cool because you walk in. It's two rooms. The first
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: room is my studio, so you walk in and the
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: first thing you see is like me and whatever I'm
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: working on, and usually I chat with everybody that comes in,
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: and then they you kind of continue on to the
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: second room, which is a gallery, and that's where all
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: the artists hanging. I have originals, and then there's a
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: whole wall of frame prints and just prints. So it's
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: a range of prices and stuff for sale. But you
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: can kind of come in and chat with me, and
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: then you can kind of have your own little time
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: in the gallery where I'm not like, you know, they're
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: looking over your shoulder. It's a nice flow, and you
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: sell originals and prints. Yep. And I still do a
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: lot of my sales online. I still have everything available
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: there and I ship quite a bit across the country.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: But it's nice to have the space where people coming
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: through Montana can come in and come see the work
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: and come see the work in progress. That's been a
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: cool part of it. How many hours days someone you
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: can let you down there, Um, it depends. It really depends.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Like it's not even I thought it would be more
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: on weekends, but it's just variable. I can't like say,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: on average, I have a few typically someone in there
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: or typically not someone typically not. Yeah, it's it's a
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: nice mix. It's enough for me. That kind of makes
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: a day go faster for me. Did you keep regular hours? Yeah,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Tuesday to Saturday, tend to six like a banker. Yeah,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: it's like I have my morning routine and then I
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: go in there and I'm open for an hour after
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: people typically get off work, So that kind of allows.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: Do you have a gone fishing or gone hunting sign
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: that you hang on. I just when we went to Alaska,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I said gone fishing close to a second. Yeah, So, uh,
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: tell people about the shack you guys bought se um
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: so the A Frame Adventures LLC. So I'll go back
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: a little bit. When I first went up to your place, Um,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: that place was for sale, and I came home and
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: was like, hey, Kelsey, there's this Like I told her
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: about the whole trip, how awesome it was. I like
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: instantly fell in love with that area, and I was like,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: there's this place for next to Steves. It's for sale.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: We should like check it out. And she was like yeah, whatever, Um, yeah,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: connection to the area, you know, and then I came up.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: So and then last year she came up and got
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: to actually experience that the area, and she too fell
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: in love with the area. So we came home. Um,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: and it was actually her who was like, we should
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: seriously start like looking into this um and you know,
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: see if we can buy it. So we couldn't do
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: it just ourselves. Um, we couldn't afford it just ourselves.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: So we got a couple um buddies involved, one being
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: her brother Bob and our our other buddy Ben Levy,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: and uh, they were like we we mentioned the the
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: idea to them that you know, we're looking at this
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: place in southeast Alaska and it's like not easy to
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: get to and a lot of things about its pain
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: in the ass, but um, once you're there, it's like
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: the best time you'll ever have. And uh, those guys
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: has never been up there, um, but they've like watched
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: the show and I've seen kind of like what goes
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: on up there, and it like took no convincing at
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: all ever in that's kind of people you need. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: And that's why we thought of them. We had they
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: had been out to Montana for a turkey hunt. The
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: year before, so we had experienced like a camp setting
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: with them and a hunting experience with them, so we
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: knew what we were getting into with that dynamic and
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: it was great. They're like enthusiastic, willing to come up
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: and do the work. Um, we work well together. So
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: it was kind of a no brainer. And we had
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: tried to pitch it to a few other friends, at
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: least one or two to you know, spread out the cost,
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: but it ended up being us four that we're really
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: in for it and it's a great dynamic. How do
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: you deal with the fact that like everything's rotten and
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: kind of ruined and you'll never get it right, you
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: just have That's just there's a level of that I feel.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: I mean, let me know if this is right or wrong,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: that you're just never gonna conquer. Right. There's structural issues
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: as far as like the rotting things go that we
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: are fixing right away. Um, but it's the fish check
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: and a corrosive environment where you're not there all year
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: two can most things that we bought in our life
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: up to this point have been in some sort of way,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: So it's like it wasn't a big shocker. It's like, oh, yeah,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: just something else we gotta fix up. We approach it
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: like like the goal for me, the goal would be
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: that you had a place as tidy and durable and
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: clean and knee as a coastguard station. But that's never
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: gonna happen. And like every year it would be like
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: the thing is for me to to enjoy the rest
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: of my year. Every year I have to know that
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: our shock is a little better than it was last year.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: And I can, honestly the straight face says, as long
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: as we've owned our place, every year we leave it
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: in Always we leave it in better shape than it
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: was the year before. Like we've built on a little bit.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: We overhauled engines, like work done this doc project, changed
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: the plumbing, Like it's always a little bit better. I
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: think you'll never get it right, but it's always a
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: little better. The system you guys have is super cool
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: and it works well because if you go to that
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: place over time, you're able to appreciate the ship that
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: was done three years ago or five, you know what
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: I mean. Like it's like it's always improving, like you say,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: and you know, even as a visitor you learn to
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: appreciate those over time. It's super cool going into it.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: For me, like, there's only so many pieces of property
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: up there, right, So my mindset was, I don't care
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: if this place falls down tomorrow. It kind of did
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: fall down a little bit in a little way. I
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: fell down, but I didn't care if it fell down tomorrow.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: I just wanted to be able to lock down that
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: area to eventually, because I knew someday, like I said,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: fell down tomorrow, someday I'd be able to, like we'd
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: be able to put a new cabin on that place.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: So and I like, I like that aspect of it,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: that it's always something to be working on. Is it's
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: it's kind of like a project, and I like projects.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: And we had have already done in the one time
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: that we were there altogether so much work and such
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: an improvement over when we first pulled up, So like
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: it's exciting to think about um over the years, what
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: it's gonna accumulate to. It's interesting that you guys were
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: up doing like the four owners, and we did four owners,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: And I think a lot of people look at that
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: thing like, man, that's not a good idea for four
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: people to pitch in and buy like a permanent thing.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: Like property. Yeah, but we have we just like haven't
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: run into a problem with it, and and and the
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: thing is, we would never have done it if we
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: couldn't have done it that way, because it's a difference
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: between everybody coming up with twenty grand or like someone
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: coming up with a d grant at that time, and
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: no one's gonna come up with a grant. Yeah, I'm curious,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: how like if you have any thing that has been
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: a management from a management standpoint, how you do that
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: like from a group? Nothing? Ever, So I was gonna
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: say for us, like the four of us have very
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: different strengths that we bring to the table that are
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: all necessary for this purchase. So I think it's gonna,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: you know, be that moving forward, that dynamic between the
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: four of us beneficial, Like there's really no overlap. We
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: need each other to make this work. For sure. People
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: get different areas. Uh. I think it's a great strategy
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: people buying like hunting properties, recreational properties, whatever. And we
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: do it like someone's always working on a project, like
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: someone's always spearheading a thing, and you generally do it
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: where you get everyone's like, yeah, that sounds like a
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: reasonable idea. Um, this year, we got like a whole
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: new like stainless steel counter in our kitchen, right, which
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: is sweet, by the way, And we had all bitched
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: about apply the rotten plywood one. I was like, I'm
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: gonna find one. So I've found this dude who's welding
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: and fabrication and catch can commissioned him to do it. No.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: I never shared the plans that anyone, Right, I arranged
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: the habit delivered. No one would ever be like, that's
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: not what I would have done. Like it was like great.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: And then we share the cost and we have a
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: lot of visitors. But the way we run it is
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: like visitors like gas, pay for gas, groceries, expendable stuff,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: and we all share maintenance like like boat issues. Maintenance
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: is use anything like semi permanent or permanent, like we
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: just share the expense. That's how we did it come up.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: It just makes sense. That's a natural way of running that. Um.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: And what's nice about that is it's very obvious when
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: you're up there what the weakest link in the property is,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: so like that naturally becomes the next project. Um. You know,
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: I don't foresee a scenario with our place in the
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: next ten years where it'll be like him and Han
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: on what needs to be done exactly. Yeah, that's one
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: of the things I'm glad we've never run into the
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: problem of is we've never had somehow magically or not.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: Maybe it's just the way it should go and does go,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: or maybe we've got lucky. We've never had a person
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: not be supportive of what the other people were supportive of. Um,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: everybody's always been like, yeah, it sounds good. Yeah, her
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: problem right now a long time. Yeah, our problem right
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: now is we want to do so much and we're
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: just like so gung ho and enthusiastic about it that
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: we have. Our list of things we want to do
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: next year is like a million things long. So we
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: need to prioritize brought up against the financial reality, yeah
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: for sure, and the time limit. I mean, we're only
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: able to be up there for a certain amount of time.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: So so we did we did our whole shack this year,
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: we did a new counter. Did everything impacts right next year? Like,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: the one thing I know is we're going to replace
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: our on demand hot water heater, but we didn't want
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: to do that and t it did everything impacts. So
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: now the next step on the man hot water heater,
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: and then you know, whatever else down the line. How
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: do you here's a question, how do you um prioritize?
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Like you're up there and you have all these things
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: that you want to get done on the house work wise,
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: but then you also want to enjoy being there and
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: go fishing and exploring and time with your family. Like
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: do you does that just kind of fall into place? Actually,
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: it falls into place naturally. But we'll go into a summer. No,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: and like we need to dig a new privy hole,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: So dig a new privy hole. Moved our house, Like
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: we definitely need to do this whatever, And every year
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: we get more done than we thought we wouldn't. Yeah,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: do you ever leave wishing you would have just relaxed
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: and fish more, had more like less work, more fun. Yeah, No,
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: we got the perfect balance. I would engage. I would
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: jump into the exact same thing somewhere else, Like I
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: want to do the same thing down and like Grand Aisle. Yeah, Usiana,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: which is like the Alaska of the South, Like I
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: want to do the same thing down there. I would
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: do the same thing anywhere, not anywhere, but I would
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: do the same thing in really rich fishing environments. I
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: would buy another shack with a bunch of people and
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: just use I should write a little pamphlet unlike how
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: to do that or how we've done it with success.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: That pamphlet would be you better plan on doing a
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: lot of work. Because you tell people you're going up
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: up to your place for whatever a week, oh, going
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: fishing to Alaska. They're like, oh, that must be so nice.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: You're like, well, you know it is, but like you're
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: working NonStop. It's like not a relaxing fishing. It's not
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: for everyone. We went to the bookstore and catch a
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Can and we were asking about any literature that would
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: be um tied to Prince of Wales, and she pointed
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: out one author who wrote a book titled A Miserable Paradise.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: Was like, that's great, Yeah, yeah it was. It was
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: the first year up there was awesome. The so we've
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: talked about in the past, but the porch fell off
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: the place this winter, um and that was like that
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: was like the first thing we did, like even before
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: we even walked into place, like we had four people
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: just like pulling those boards apart and stuff. Was that
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: the bonfire, big bonfire you had that that was the
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: couch bins of multi clothes. Um. But yeah, my like
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: my priority is like get the place so it's not
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: gonna fall over and not just road away, and like
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: get the boats running to a point where we can
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: depend on them, you know, and like after that, it's
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: just like kind of what you said, pick a project
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: every year and get it done. But like, yeah, this
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: and like this is remote and off the grid, so
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: you can't go to the hardware store, which is very frustrating,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: so frustrating when you need something. You're like, dude, I
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: am one spark plug away from being set and I
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: can't get the spark. And like I'll point out that
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: if we didn't have you guys there, like we would
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: have been screwed with a lot of ship just because
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: like if I didn't have the right tool or whatever,
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: I just walked over to your place and grabbed it
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: and make sure I put it back in the right spot.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: But yeah, there's like so many things that we were
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: working on that was like we just didn't have the
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: right stuff to get it done. And it's very helpful
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: having you there. You know, you guys have been established
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: there for what twenty some years almost, but Apparently you
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: don't need the right stuff to catch hudder and pound
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: hall a bit right. Yeah, we got lucky. My My
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: one frustration, um is I don't the only thing in
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: my life where the more I do it, the worse
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: I get at it. It would be uh black cod fishing.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: Oh you think you're getting worse at it? Yeah? Didn't
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: you bring in a few one this year? You've gone
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: all in on that too. I'm all in, and every
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: year it gets worse and worse and worse. The first
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: time I ever dropped down within like five minutes, I
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: had a black cod, caught a few that day. Then
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: when out that summer did real good. And it's just
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: gotten worse and worse and worse and worse. What was
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: going through your head when you pull that one black
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: caught up and took a good look at it this year?
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: This year, I was ecstatic, So I like how cold
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: they are when they're coming up out of water. Didn't
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: you say something about maybe it could be like a
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: migratory issue. No, I just gotten worse at it. Man,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: it's personal. I don't know though. I mean, the halibut
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: fishing this year seem way slower of it was way
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: off every year. There's things that are good and there's
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: things that are bad. It's gonna ask you did it
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: pick up when it got warm after we left, No,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: Sam and fish was lights out? Yeah, that was fun.
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: The help of fishing was dead. Scalop diving never been better. Yeah,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: I mean not that you know, they've always been there,
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: but shrimp and seemed a little dead. Never been better
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: on scallops. Crabbing was good, black cotton was miserable. Every
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: year something's good, something sucks. Boy, it sucks letting those
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: yellow eye go, man, I got a lot of those.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: Can we tell the story, the hilarious story about the
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: two giant helibit from our camp. You can close it out,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: but I'm afraid you'd be giving away your little spot. No,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna talk more about the people in the
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: dynamic and our little dinghy that we had ahead. We'll
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: close out with that, Okay. So it easily could have
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: been UM said you were there, so I'll let you. Yeah.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: So we we were having um when we bought this place.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: It came with came with three skiffs, um and three motors.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: One's a Honda thirty horse. One was a Mercury forty horse,
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: and one was a Suzuki four horse. And that's the
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: thing about these types of deals. When you buy something
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: and you're not there to inspect, there there's no like inspection.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: There's no formal process. So like you get the list
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: of things that are on, they don't move out either,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: and you don't know whether it works or not. Yeah,
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: so we went and I went into this being like
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: if we can get at least one motor running and
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: boat running to go fish, I'll be the static. So
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: we're going through the motors. We find out that um,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: the Mercury, it wasn't gonna I mean it's it was running,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: and then it wasn't running. We couldn't figure out what's
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: going on. So we determined that that thing wasn't gonna
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: work for the summer. And then we had uh Honda
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: thirty which fired right up and was running like a champ.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: But the UM there was a seal on the hydraulic
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: cylinder that was leaking and we leaked all of our
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: hydraulic fluid out of the electronic tilt. So um, we
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: couldn't tilt our motor up, which you need to be
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: able to do that. So that one was out and
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: all we had left was our little Suzuki Kicker four
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: horse and we put that on a It was a
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: Sears boat. I have no clue what time. It looks
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: like it's been through the ringer, No clue what year
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: it was built. Oh that is an old yeah, moss
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: hanging off. So we couldn't go too far in it.
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: So we would pack four people in the evenings and
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: go out to this one hole um and fish halibut.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: And I think it was the first night we were out.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: It was, yeah, the first night we were out there
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: halbut fishing. Um all right. We had our one buddy,
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: Sam and his back or his girlfriend Becca were up
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: there with us, and we're catching like quillbacks and stuff.
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: And I was teaching them how to use like the
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: deep release and whatnot, and um, she like, and I
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: was very adamant, like you are, like when you're running
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: these circle hooks, because we were we were just running
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: um some circle hooks and and cut bait. And I
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: was like, when you get a fish, it's not like
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: normal fishing where you set the hook. You just gotta
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: like reel into them. So um she at one point
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: in time starts getting this hit and I'm sitting there
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: watching a rod and she's like, what do I do?
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: And I just it got to the point where I
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: was like, real, she she starts reel and and you
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: never think it's gonna be so big gas fish, you know,
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: there's always the opportunity for that to happen. But she
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: starts reeling and you can tell very quickly that it's
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: not just your average little halibit or rock fish or
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: yellow you know whatever. Um. And yeah, she fought it
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: for a while and it got to the point where
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: she was like, couldn't fight it anymore. So she handled
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: the over, pulling the boat all four people in this
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: little serious but we didn't have an anchor, so it
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: was pulling the boat all over the place and uh,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: finally get it up and get it up to the surface.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: And we didn't have a harpoon or anything. We had
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: a gaff in a rope and my buddy Casey gaffed it.
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: And as it was coming up, I was like telling Casey,
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: I'm like, when that thing gets to the surface, you're
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: gonna have to gaff it. And I said, when you
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: gaff it, just freaking hold on because it's gonna go nuts,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: and I had this video him doing it. The thing
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: comes to the surface, We're all like, holy shit, we
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: were not expecting this huge halibit. He gased, thing goes nuts. Um,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: he ends up, it ends up coming on gaffed several times. Uh,
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: luckily kept it on the hook. Um, we're able to
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: get a rope around its tail and we um. You know,
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: when it finally settled down, I bled it out, so
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: it died before we brought it in the boat because
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: I was telling him like, do not bring that big
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: of a fish in the boat still alive, because everything
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: in the boat is going to be out of the boat,
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: you know, if that's things in here flopping around and
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: you're gonna break an arm or whatever. This sounds very calm.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: There's a video. It is complete and total payoff. U.
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: So yeah, finally got it. Uh. You know, we killed
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: it in the water and brought it in the boat
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: and putted our way back to the cabin and we're
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: we're like so excited to get back and show you
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: guys at night because no one was expecting that UM
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: was one seventeen, That one was one, and then the
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: next night it was the next night I think, Uh,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: those guys. I wasn't there for the next night, but
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: those guys went back out and caught a one thirty
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: three in the same spot, so amazing, two biggest fish
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: of the whole trip. A lot of people pounded a
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: lot of water. They they were just beyond ecstatic. They
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: left and she was like Becca, She was like, I
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: need to do this every year. You need to invite
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: me every year. Do you guys remember the first night
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: when you brought that big one back? What Steve said coming,
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: It'll never happen again. Yeah, But also a lot of
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: people were saying that the big ones coming two. Yeah,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: I said, I sighted five times when we caught two
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: giants in the same spot. You're right on that, Well
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: you're right in wrong then all right, guys, go, uh,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: what's your what's the name of your gallery? I call
