- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary for podcast.
- 0:48I'm Curtis Wilson. Brian Sigler, buddy.
- 0:51We live on a Wednesday night, how you feeling live on a
- 0:55Wednesday night back to the normal bowel weekly episodes
- 0:58after some ups and downs over the last few months, whatever.
- 1:03And it flows, we were kind of working out our schedule over
- 1:05the offseason. We kind of okay.
- 1:07Well, do you feel like it? Yeah, anyone lined up, do we
- 1:10have two is enough news to talk about.
- 1:13Let's kind of Things out and you know after two weeks ago we had
- 1:19some stuff for you but this has been a pretty busy couple weeks
- 1:22especially with baseball and some of the stuff that's coming
- 1:26out from the camps that have already started.
- 1:29And some of the stuff that prize been talking about with some of
- 1:32the local media. We thought, hey let's, let's get
- 1:36another one out here. Let's talk these things through
- 1:38a little bit and see, see what you guys think.
- 1:40Absolutely, it was time. But again the Ebbs and flows of
- 1:43the all-season. Sometimes we sit here.
- 1:45Here and we start looking at how much data we have and it's like
- 1:48that's like 30 minutes and I can talk not sit there and say it's
- 1:5430 minutes ago. I'll be we compared it to with
- 1:58our but I don't think you guys want to hear that.
- 2:00Very don't we got some fun stuff for you tonight.
- 2:02We got we got at least a good hour that is substantive and and
- 2:07going to be good stuff for you guys to pour over for a lot of
- 2:09stuff, broken on the last few weeks.
- 2:11And like you said, Brian, let's lead it off.
- 2:13Let's talk about the baseball program.
- 2:15Ram. You know what a season.
- 2:18First of all before we get into all the details, what a season
- 2:23you know from I think you said it or tweet it out a few weeks
- 2:27ago a few days ago. A team that was fixed to finish
- 2:30sixth on their side of the conference wins.
- 2:34The conference outright Gets a Super Regional host gets a
- 2:38regional host. Is a top four seed, it is such a
- 2:43gigantic step with a program in general.
- 2:47Yeah huge step for the program. This is kind of what they've
- 2:52been building towards, right? Like we we we've seen like baby
- 2:55steps baby steps and they finally took that big step this
- 2:58year and it was good to see them, kind of put the pieces
- 3:01together where they could really, you know, put together a
- 3:04run that, you know, I think. Blacksburg and Hokie nation in
- 3:08general would be proud of and have been wanting to see for a
- 3:11while. And, you know, super get to the
- 3:14regional Regional hosting, it ran through Columbia twice got
- 3:19right, state in that opening game, 14 runs in one inning
- 3:25Jesus, that was just impressive. Like the game was kind of over
- 3:31and I kind of looked away because it's like, they're not
- 3:33coming back, we're hitting them hard, but do come.
- 3:36Act like 30 minutes later and see the 14 spot.
- 3:39It's like this is, I told you probably got a texted you, I
- 3:42said this is like a state championship caliber, baseball
- 3:46team playing one. That isn't good.
- 3:49That's what that any remind me of in.
- 3:51I mean they again they ran through them.
- 3:55They never had a face Gonzaga the team we talked about the
- 3:57most, they did not show up to the Blackbird Regional but now
- 4:02they're pitching, didn't help them and they did not have the
- 4:05Run support too. And also with Colombia, it's
- 4:08true. But let's just talk about this
- 4:10and let's just reflect, first of all, on the regional, to win a
- 4:14regional to win, a regional is a milestone for program because
- 4:19this program until 2022, had been in a been in nine.
- 4:24I believe it never got to a Super Regional to win it.
- 4:30And to get you the Super Regional.
- 4:31That's a milestone in itself for a program that had never done it
- 4:34before. Yeah.
- 4:35It is starting. The regular season putting
- 4:37themselves in a position where they can host the regional where
- 4:41they could get a somewhat favorable draw in the regional
- 4:44and be able to just Hammer them out of the park and move on to
- 4:47the next stage. It was huge for them.
- 4:50It's a huge. Froakie Nation, huge for
- 4:52Blacksburg having that many people show up the campus
- 4:56back-to-back weekends. This late in the season.
- 4:59Exactly that. This late in the season, the
- 5:01stadium was packed for just about for every hokey game.
- 5:06To get that first Super Regional bid where you were essentially
- 5:10one of the best 16 teams in the country.
- 5:11We had known that all year, but some teams didn't make it
- 5:15examples Florida. And, you know, and subsequently
- 5:19we had a play, the Oklahoma Sooners and sort of the big news
- 5:23that came out early before, the series, even started, was the
- 5:27hammer, which had sort of been a toll, at a rally call, A Team
- 5:33Builder, a boost fun prop, It is ruled by the NCAA.
- 5:38It can't be on the field. Let's see.
- 5:42At this point in time we're about 70 games in and now it's a
- 5:47problem. Yeah, that's a problem.
- 5:50That's a problem. Rattling Bell isn't a problem,
- 5:52but now other teams throughout the country in the Cooper's are
- 5:58using their props. But for some reason to hammer
- 6:01got literally singled out in this instance as being a topic
- 6:06of concern or whatever the hell they wanted to punch you
- 6:09businesses. So whatever bullshit lingo that
- 6:13the assembly uses to justify this shit.
- 6:15And I mean, we, you know, we can Hammer the n-c-double-a all we
- 6:18want to. But my problem is not it's not
- 6:22just the inconsistency of the application of the rules.
- 6:25It's that also there are actually legitimate problems
- 6:30that the NCAA is not dealing with.
- 6:32But this thing that you know, here is a point of emphasis here
- 6:36because it's intimidating to the opponent's.
- 6:40I mean, are we To pull them the turnover chain, or I mean, it's
- 6:44going to stay still have a stupid ass backpack, like the
- 6:49Georgia sleight heads that they get the sport estate still of
- 6:52the stupid backpack. Did they get rid of that?
- 6:54I've watched the Florida state Florida.
- 6:57State should not be allowed to put the spear in the middle of
- 6:59the field anymore. It's just too, it's so scary,
- 7:02it's intimidating. Bunch of baloney, bunch of
- 7:05garbage. Especially when the way it was
- 7:09used, it was never in. It was always pointed towards
- 7:12the Dugout and it was just the Hokies.
- 7:14It wasn't like they were going out there in the middle of the
- 7:17right behind The Catcher And deciding to do it.
- 7:19They were literally so bunch of garbage but they are doing at
- 7:24the plate like if they were brought into the plate or near
- 7:26the batter's box, is one thing. They're they're like pastel on
- 7:29Deck circle like they're closer to the Dugout than they are
- 7:33really pleased. It's just a bunch of garbage but
- 7:36let's let's hit. Let's start game 1.
- 7:38Which was 3:00 the early game but hey, in ESPN2 game
- 7:42nonetheless. You get national attention right
- 7:44there and you know, the loss is 54.
- 7:49Yeah. Watching that game and the a
- 7:54good frame jobs. One thing.
- 7:57A ridiculous asinine frame job should never be called a strike.
- 8:01I don't even care if it's borderline but when legitimately
- 8:03a catcher is attempting to pull it three to four inches back in
- 8:07and it's an obvious pole and you're getting a strike call, I
- 8:12was so pissed at that because it's like that that balls three
- 8:15inches below the knees. Like that's not you can't swing
- 8:18it that it's outside. Well there was one called a
- 8:21three-strike that was about four inches below the zone and 2
- 8:26inches off the plate. It was on the white line.
- 8:28What do you talk about 2 inches? It was only white line, which I
- 8:33think it was out of the dirt. And yeah, you said it pretty
- 8:36much on the white line and then framed as the corn, I was like,
- 8:38what? No But neither here, nor there
- 8:42about that, it took quite a few innings for the bats to get
- 8:45cranked up. You know, they did get cranked
- 8:49up late to cut into that lead, but it was just too little too
- 8:53late at that point. They had there s going in there
- 8:55Aces and eights. You could see, I'll say this,
- 8:58they're number one is probably going to be a guy in a couple
- 9:01years because I think he's a sophomore, don't quote me on
- 9:05that, but you see he had good stuff.
- 9:07He has potential stuff to keep that consistency.
- 9:10Was his problem, I think when he was on, he was on when he had
- 9:14control, he was on. But you know about he'd have
- 9:17outings where he gets plunked a little bit.
- 9:19This is one where he was locked in dialed in early and I think
- 9:24because of the the opposite on our end, we are not doubt in
- 9:28early on the mound and we weren't hitting.
- 9:31And you know, when we look back at this series at the Super
- 9:34Regionals, you can point at the missed opportunities and game
- 9:38one as to why we're not heading home.
- 9:41It's true, but like you said, we had to get rid of, we have to
- 9:45pull our Friday starter in the second.
- 9:47The bullpen did, a great job to keep it closed.
- 9:52And for us, with hit the guy, they're number one, who was, who
- 9:56was pitching good, but then also getting the calls we didn't see
- 10:00any of their Bullpen. We saw him that we saw the
- 10:03closer and the closures, one of the best in the country, guys,
- 10:0595 to 96. And if you take a look at some
- 10:08of the secondary pitches one, Goes down to about 86 and he has
- 10:12a 79 mile an hour or something. I want to say it's maybe a curve
- 10:16but that's who we saw. We saw their best to pictures
- 10:19and when you can't shell and then with the Zone the way it
- 10:23was, it hurts. But like you said Brian, It's
- 10:2654. That's the one that stings you
- 10:29now down 10 facing elimination game to happens.
- 10:35Early afternoon, crowds packed, crowds, Jack and second Pitch of
- 10:40the game, bit of season. Gone.
- 10:46Goodbye. We talked about the the Hammers
- 10:51that I like that. They broke out the air.
- 10:53Hammers for the. Yes they should have got an
- 10:57inflatable him. Yeah, just really drive it home.
- 11:01Absolutely. And you know third inning to run
- 11:05shots from Cross and Hunter and the games five you know
- 11:09basically 0.5 nothing in it looks like it's going to be a
- 11:14cruise but you know Oklahoma to their credit kept.
- 11:18Fighting and fighting and fighting because we get up into
- 11:21the fifth inning, you know, bottom for, they cut the lead to
- 11:25one and then show will comes out answers, gets us back, roll and
- 11:30again, but reality kind of set in we talked about having to use
- 11:35the bullpen in game 1. It happened again in game two
- 11:39and it was Hackenberg who I think he's got the stuff, but
- 11:44you can tell being a younger guy.
- 11:46His arms, not quite there. But to me his stride, his
- 11:51fastball looked fine. He just could not throw a
- 11:53breaking ball to for strike to save his life.
- 11:57So, it had to go to the bullpen again.
- 11:59So, now you got Hurley and Higgins coming in, and now you
- 12:03got, you know, three of your key members of your Bullpen and
- 12:08thrown significant enemies down. Yeah, thrown significant Innings
- 12:11because game one to their credit, they kept you in it but
- 12:16gained two because Oklahoma has battled back, they had to pitch
- 12:19great and her knee pitched on belief Kearney had the probably
- 12:24his best outing of his career. And to me, I think you can say,
- 12:29give him player of the game because if he doesn't keep
- 12:32pitching the way he pitches that game could have been tied late
- 12:36versus a runaway, you know, 14-8 Victory.
- 12:40But it all set up game three in, you know, watching that here
- 12:45first inning, you know, two home runs in the first inning that is
- 12:49not the way you want to start. Again three in a Super Regional.
- 12:54Yeah, you hate me by the 8-ball you hate that, you're giving
- 12:58them confidence with the home runs.
- 13:00It's not just you know that you had an error and you had you
- 13:04know a bloop single driver ban in its to diggers it definitely
- 13:09you know from a mental standpoint kind of already puts
- 13:14you in a position where you feel like you're you're having to
- 13:17tell you to push a little bit, right?
- 13:19Yes. And sometimes that that Is going
- 13:22to hurt you at the play and we saw it hurt them at the plate,
- 13:26especially in the first couple Innings against cave Warden.
- 13:29The redshirt freshman for Oklahoma.
- 13:32No base runners, no hits, he didn't walk anybody.
- 13:36And when you're going in there and it's two nothing, and you're
- 13:39not getting base runners on that, definitely, you can see
- 13:44anyone's ever play baseball. You can see Gear, start turning
- 13:47heads in the in the overthinking starts, but they settled down.
- 13:52The third malinowski. Finally got a hit gotta the the
- 13:57butt of some jokes when he finally gets the hit.
- 13:59And then demartini brings him home, brings the hammer in the
- 14:02third to Tyler ballgame. You feel like, okay we're
- 14:05getting the momentum back, but we give the lead right back in
- 14:07the fourth inning. And, and you brought this up, I
- 14:12think you've texted me while you were down South Boston that
- 14:15those first, he's like the bullpens not there.
- 14:18He's like the that we need her knee.
- 14:21Higgins with them out. You know, we're just, we don't
- 14:26have the gas and you can see it, you know, they start, they kept
- 14:30hitting the ball and what can you do?
- 14:35What would their that? There's not much you can do
- 14:37after that because you had a play, your cards a certain way
- 14:42and you know maybe they should go to five games because clearly
- 14:48the most talented team didn't win this.
- 14:53Yeah. I mean we had a problem we ended
- 14:55up getting Oklahoma while they weren't as talented as Florida.
- 15:00We called them on a hot streak and they certainly played like a
- 15:04team that was on a High Street because even a game where we
- 15:07were hammering it they hung around huh?
- 15:11And your stomach and from a pitching standpoint we
- 15:15definitely did not have our best weekend?
- 15:17No. Not at all.
- 15:18So not at all in the the hanging around and Hanging around is
- 15:23having to use her knee for almost four Innings.
- 15:26Because if they don't hang around hang around and you can
- 15:29use him to, maybe you can bring him back in for two more and may
- 15:33be limited. But you know after they got down
- 15:37so much, it was you have to start swinging even if it's bad
- 15:41pitches because Sunday to me the Zone, wine back up again for
- 15:45Oklahoma. Because there were a couple
- 15:48pictures I saw. Gavin cross was going to be a
- 15:50top ten pick or swinging that you normally don't see him swing
- 15:53it, but when they were getting called Low and outside, he's
- 15:55swinging at the ball because you know, it's going to be a strike.
- 15:59I've got to try to put a bad Omen so, you know, unfortunate,
- 16:05you know, the Super Regional ends in heartbreak but it's the
- 16:09steps. And you said something, what did
- 16:12you say to me? They Brian about.
- 16:17You sent me has come out again, getting eyes on the program
- 16:20today and that's what this is getting more eyes on the
- 16:23program. You're seeing Blacksburg on TV
- 16:28and meaningful games late in the spring.
- 16:31So this is going to this is going to have a trickle-down
- 16:33effect. This is going to matter too long
- 16:34term. This shows that hey we can we
- 16:39get hit with the big boys. If you come here, you can play
- 16:42with big games. You play in big games, you can
- 16:45have a chance to go to the College World Series.
- 16:47You will have eyes on you to where you can potentially be a
- 16:49top ten pick and someone else, I cannot remember the name.
- 16:57Some of those chatting about it today.
- 16:58He's, he got, he's gonna get a second round grade.
- 17:01If you can remember, and you message us, I'll mention you on
- 17:05here. I just can't remember it because
- 17:07I'm getting old but it's also a way of I think it'll show with
- 17:11it. I think shovel was no getting
- 17:13it. I think, is that, okay?
- 17:15But you talked about getting the eyes but it's also money when
- 17:19you make regionals and you make super regionals.
- 17:21It's extra money for those non-revenue Sports.
- 17:26Bone softball. Have the potential to be Revenue
- 17:29Sports. Though, if you are selling
- 17:31tickets, obviously there are you got Network game?
- 17:36Which the ACC Network just is freaking?
- 17:39Shitshow could fix you somebody somebody getting that shit.
- 17:43I mean it's it's tennis, it's so laughable.
- 17:46I mean, it's bad. You I mean I'm not just hold up
- 17:50for Virginia. Tech is putting literally every
- 17:52team in the ACC behind the eight ball against SEC.
- 17:56See and Big Ten? Yeah, impact 12, yes.
- 18:01So somebody's got to fix that. But again, it's a great season
- 18:05for baseball, it's a great season for softballs a great
- 18:08spring season in general. It was a great season overall,
- 18:13you know, probably wants everything over the next 10
- 18:17days. Figure out, with in Omaha,
- 18:20probably going to be the best finish in the Capital.
- 18:23One Clash, which is basically every sport It's every sport
- 18:27counts, you know, probably gonna be our highest finished ever,
- 18:30which is really awesome and it shows you kind of wit Babcock's
- 18:34vision of building it because you're getting to a point now
- 18:37where like the wrestling team is probably going to be self funded
- 18:41in a couple of years. If the baseball team is softball
- 18:43team, keep it up. They're probably gonna be close
- 18:45to self funding themselves in Brian.
- 18:48If these non-revenue Sports become self-funded, where does
- 18:51the extra money get to stay? The Foosball de fútbol, unless
- 18:56it's nothing in. Let's talk some football here.
- 18:58Brian, because over the weekend, had a pretty big commitment.
- 19:03Highest-rated guy on the class so far, late ganam organum.
- 19:09However, you pronounce it. Somebody knows the exact
- 19:12pronunciation where you can find it, please let me know but the
- 19:1565 280-pound offensive, lineman out of Charleston.
- 19:19West Virginia, who is the number one player in West Virginia.
- 19:23And I'm borderline. Four-star, had 24/7 with offers
- 19:27from NC State obviously, West Virginia, North Carolina,
- 19:33Indiana Wake Forest, South Carolina.
- 19:38Nice offer list. What's the tape showing on this
- 19:41guy? Cuz he seems like he's already
- 19:43got the size and it's not going to take much to put on to be
- 19:46ready for a D1 play. Yeah, good, good offer list.
- 19:49Good size. What I like about him is he's
- 19:53got a It is he's a guy that finishes plays, he's definitely
- 19:58an interior offensive lineman he's got somebody that can be
- 20:01kind of a swing guard tackle. Just he had some tape where I
- 20:07got to see some one-on-ones and definitely not the said he needs
- 20:11for to be that swing type player.
- 20:12But definitely going to be a solid guard.
- 20:15I think as he moves along in his career, got to get about 15 20
- 20:20pounds on him but I think he's going to Do solid at the
- 20:24position. I like what I see from him both
- 20:28in past Pro and run blocking. Like I said, good voter, but
- 20:33he's got uses his hands. Well, impasse Pro, good, punch,
- 20:39and good recovery. If if there's a good first move
- 20:43by the defender there. So you know we'll see what comes
- 20:46of him as he works his way through next season.
- 20:52Once we get past Signing Day, I like the pick up.
- 20:55Like I think you said your friends friends for star player.
- 20:58He was a four-star for a few days composite for star for a
- 21:04few days and then it all of a sudden he drops back to with
- 21:07three investigated. The so idea.
- 21:11So I don't know what change but I do know that you know Rivals
- 21:15has him as a mid three-on-three has him as a four-star and 24/7
- 21:21has a high three ESPN has the ranking on him, but that's not
- 21:26shocking because ESPN is, I don't know what the fuck they're
- 21:28doing with the. They need to take them out of
- 21:30the composite. How are you?
- 21:31The number one, pretty much consensus player in a state and
- 21:35you don't have a real have arranged an ESPN, just needs to
- 21:40take them out of the composite first, if they start getting
- 21:43their act together, do their own.
- 21:44I mean, we should get on three of their know, so you still get
- 21:47three data points. So, you still have a solid
- 21:49Trifecta of data points with exactly.
- 21:51I mean also with with This, when it's Joe Rudolph, first people
- 21:55in show your dolls. First, big Way Joe Rudolph of
- 21:58win against With a player that is being heavily pursued.
- 22:04I mean, you can say you know, Hans Hammer was in that somewhat
- 22:09in that category, but lace definitely in terms of major
- 22:14regional players all on board. Yes, they were you the guy, you
- 22:18had West Virginia. He had UNC at NC State.
- 22:21I can't remember if he had a Penn State offer or not, but I
- 22:25did not. Okay, you're not have that.
- 22:27Had the South Carolina offer though?
- 22:29Yes, South Carolina. But he had his visits lined up
- 22:33so it's a big win for Zhou. Chong Quinn was the was the
- 22:37secondary recruiter on that as well.
- 22:40But that's I think that's something that we all mentioned
- 22:43about Joe recruiting. Like, and it's also a guy who's
- 22:47taken in developed guys into good offensive linemen.
- 22:51So, it's almost like if he's got the nose and he feels good about
- 22:54him. You trust the work, right?
- 22:57Oh yeah, work yeah, yeah, yeah, be.
- 22:59This is a guy. Who's if he likes the player,
- 23:03his hit rate is so high that you're going to.
- 23:05You're going to roll with it. Yeah.
- 23:07As long as it's pretty much not like bottom of the barrel, she's
- 23:12although, although he turned a two-star into an All-American,
- 23:16he did turn it to starting to all the marriage or so, there
- 23:18are success stories like that, obviously the lower, you get the
- 23:23hit rate gets smaller but community.
- 23:25Joe Rudolph is a guy that can recruit and because he can also
- 23:30teach, yeah, it helps his recruiting Because he can sell
- 23:34you. Come here, I'm going to get you
- 23:36good. Whether you're a 3, star 4 star,
- 23:39wherever you are on that chart, you got a chance to make it to
- 23:42the next level. If you come play for me on a
- 23:45percent and with the commitment their hokey stay 25th in the
- 23:51class. So still again, I think well
- 23:53above our expectations so forth. This year and it's really good
- 23:57because we're sitting better than we thought.
- 23:59I think with someone guys that are looking to announce their
- 24:02commitment over the rest of the summer.
- 24:05I think we're sitting fairly well with a lot of those
- 24:08players. Yeah so as we continue to move
- 24:10forward I think that it's nothing but good things here.
- 24:14I don't know where we're going to end up Landing.
- 24:15I think just based on the volume we're taking and kind of the the
- 24:19trajectory were on. Now we're at least going to be
- 24:21that top 40 top 35 yeah whether we can see Sneak into the top 30
- 24:26is going to be the question. I think it's going to depend on
- 24:29probably one or two of those those names that are coming
- 24:33coming due pretty soon because we got about seven players, I
- 24:36think that are looking to commit in the next two to three months
- 24:41before they're their season starts.
- 24:43They're looking to announce their commitment.
- 24:46You look pretty good with one for sure, whether we end up
- 24:51getting if we can get four or five of those seven to commit to
- 24:54Virginia Tech, then we're looking pretty good as we roll
- 24:58into the season and I feel better about saying hey yeah,
- 25:01definitely top 35, maybe top 30. If we're lower on that hit rate,
- 25:06I'd say, you know, keep it measured top 40 maybe top 35,
- 25:11hundred percent. All right, let's put next.
- 25:14Let's talk about if you MC didn't read about it.
- 25:17I hope you football staff Retreat down the Bristol will.
- 25:21First of all, I've never heard of beamer or the Fuente era
- 25:28doing this. Ever.
- 25:31Yeah, if we are incorrect somebody, let us know in the
- 25:35comments. I don't hit us up on Twitter.
- 25:38You know she does something let us know if we're wrong here.
- 25:42I don't remember this. At least not being.
- 25:44You know, well, publicized so release doing better with
- 25:47communication if we're not doing better with process, let us know
- 25:51what's happening and it seemed like the legitimate almost
- 25:55typical, you know, corporate type Retreat because you know,
- 25:59it was a Get away, it wasn't like a week-long thing.
- 26:02They had a bunch of different activities, the staff got to
- 26:04choose what they want to do. Whether it was like, you know,
- 26:08golf hiking fishing activities, a plethora of other things so it
- 26:13was almost like you're going to get away, but we're also going
- 26:16to do some, you know, some things.
- 26:19And one of the big things was having Jim Phillips, ACC
- 26:22commissioner come in and speak to the guys kind of about the
- 26:27the changing landscape of college football.
- 26:29I think that was that's pretty big in general right there.
- 26:33Hopefully said a little bit about the ACC Network deal.
- 26:37Let's hope it gets better. Sorry, this twice we've already
- 26:40mentioned that in. Yeah, we're always we're going
- 26:42to wait until wait until the season starts, because that
- 26:45first night game is going to be on the SEC network.
- 26:51Wow. That they were showing Paul
- 26:55football, reruns. Y equals a softball tournaments
- 26:59are going on in so sorry, softball regionals.
- 27:02Baseball Conference tournaments are going.
- 27:05Yeah exactly. What the Are you doing?
- 27:09We're in our cone this all night and I can complain to because
- 27:13you know, I felt like you know, this is one thing.
- 27:17But A lot of times when there was games on at the same time,
- 27:22they were going to like UNC instead of Virginia Tech with in
- 27:27terms of network priority. Yeah, I didn't like that shit
- 27:29because you should put the team from the conference that is
- 27:33hosting. Yes, in the Indie better
- 27:36position. It's true.
- 27:38My opinion I'm bias. I'll admit it.
- 27:42But, you know I think I've got some logic behind my
- 27:46justification there so Yes, you do.
- 27:49Yes, you do. But, you know, additional to
- 27:51having Phillips there and obviously some staff fun stuff.
- 27:55Also had a motivational speaker. Brian, were you shocked when you
- 28:00read, one of the first things that this motivational feature
- 28:03discussed was relationships because Jesus, Brent,
- 28:07relationship, cry, putting his nickname.
- 28:12Yeah, I mean, it's all about relationships and I mean, we're
- 28:15seeing some of the proof in the pudding so far.
- 28:17So and let's be honest, regardless of anything else.
- 28:23That happens and anything else that Brent Pride does?
- 28:28You can lose looked at the previous regime.
- 28:31We saw how fracture those relationships were, yes.
- 28:34So when loser draw, he's going to end up leaving this program
- 28:40better than he found it because we're at least going to be
- 28:43sitting in a position where We know that the coaches in the
- 28:48high schools in Virginia, trust, what's happening in Blacksburg?
- 28:52Now a relationship sample and I think that that's a better
- 28:56building block for you know, whether prai has long-term
- 29:00success at Virginia Tech or whether the 10 years is in the
- 29:04same ballpark as Fuente and we're looking in doing this
- 29:06thing again in five or six years.
- 29:09Again, regardless of how that is.
- 29:11I like where we're sitting and where we're heading in the
- 29:13direction that the program is taking right now.
- 29:18Then I have in a while so but didn't that you mention it right
- 29:23there. The other thing they had the
- 29:24speaker talked about was trust, which is Big because like you
- 29:27said, they're laying trust in the programs around the
- 29:30Commonwealth and around the region about what we are.
- 29:33As a you know, as a football program.
- 29:36The last piece was interesting though and I hear this and it
- 29:41makes me think corporate but it talked about one of our best
- 29:45practices and teaching. You know, to have a motivational
- 29:49speaker come in and talk about that because that is something
- 29:52as football coaches, that sometimes don't get through.
- 29:56Some guys are great on a whiteboard, can draw up amazing
- 29:59place but man, actually, show kid what to do?
- 30:04They're not good. So I said interesting.
- 30:07Yeah, I think the two things I'm thinking of like, Was what
- 30:12they're talking about. Was it based on leg?
- 30:16Differentiation of instruction and growth mindset.
- 30:18Was that was that kind of the type of like filtering that
- 30:21through football. Like I mean those are definitely
- 30:26heavy Bud, were the buzzwords in the education and teaching
- 30:29Fields is from you. So, if that's something that
- 30:33they were talking about how you gotta, you know, what's the best
- 30:37way to get to people that learn differently or people?
- 30:41They need different levels of motivation to get out of them.
- 30:45What? Their ability is right?
- 30:48And then focusing on, you know, the building blocks with with
- 30:52the the growth mindset, you don't have to reach your goal
- 30:55right now, but need to win today.
- 30:59Get get better today. Focus focus on that and go once
- 31:03the one day at a time, one step at a time until you reach your
- 31:06goal and keep that goal in mind. But you got to attack it every
- 31:10day that like you're going to achieve it or you're not going
- 31:12to get there on a scent. One other thing he kind of
- 31:15mentioned I want to get this kind of pulled up.
- 31:18And back from your playing days down at Sydney he talked about
- 31:22he did this also because he wanted everybody on the same
- 31:25page same page same narrative, same language same messaging
- 31:29when dealing with the team and I'm also going to thank probably
- 31:32dealing with all these camps and all these recruits coming
- 31:35through. Why is it so important,
- 31:38literally? Because he took the whole staff,
- 31:39this wasn't just like he took the 10 coaches on field and some
- 31:43gaas. Legitimately, if you saw the
- 31:45group photo, it was like if you are in the Building and doing
- 31:49something with the football program, you went to this, if
- 31:53we're going, if your own payroll at Berryman, you're there.
- 31:57If you actually get a check for the from the football program,
- 32:01you were there and it's important.
- 32:03Absolutely, it's important. And I mean, we talk about all
- 32:09the time you having consistent messaging.
- 32:11That's what they're talking about is having consistent
- 32:13messaging from every coach, every member of the staff, when
- 32:18you go Someone, you know that if you ask them a question, go to
- 32:22the next person, ask them a question.
- 32:23You're getting the same response and that breeze professionalism
- 32:29across your department that breeds professionalism across
- 32:32your program and that means that everyone is also accountable and
- 32:37dependable on these areas, right?
- 32:40That's the expectation. He so he setting an expectation
- 32:43that if you're a part of this program, you've got to talk and
- 32:47understand. Be able to speak on a lot of the
- 32:50things that these coaches do and if you can't, you need to know
- 32:54exactly who to send them to and what to ask them.
- 33:00And I think that's important in terms of in recruiting that's
- 33:03important in coaching that's important in, you know,
- 33:06nutrition that's important. In making sure that you're doing
- 33:09the right things with treatment to keep your body, right?
- 33:13It's top down, man. It's awesome.
- 33:17It's awesome to see things like this, it being publicized and
- 33:20then to not just publicize in a picture because you can always
- 33:24publicize a picture, not see much behind, but then actually
- 33:27sing what we did while we did it, who showed up, what we
- 33:32talked about. Again, the doors are open and
- 33:34back to the program is such a big thing and then in speaking
- 33:38of opening, like talking about things, you know, DJ Sims, who
- 33:41went into the portal was announced, he's no longer on the
- 33:44team, he Still own scholarship at the school for the upcoming
- 33:48school year, but it's, um, it's I don't know the rule, exactly.
- 33:54But basically, he can be a student Beyond scholarship.
- 33:57Not counted against the scholarship.
- 34:00Apparently, Lincoln Riley, did it with like ten players if a
- 34:04player medically retired or decides to no longer play
- 34:07football, they can remain on scholarship at that school and
- 34:11not count against. Yeah, that the scholarship
- 34:14number for the program. Now and basically, you know,
- 34:17probably just said he came to me and just kind of said, you just
- 34:20didn't want to play football badly anymore, and I know that
- 34:23can happen. We've seen it happen with tons
- 34:25of guys, even more highly touted guys than DJ Sims, that they get
- 34:30there and it's the amount of work right to put in to be a
- 34:34division 1 athlete. It's an absolute.
- 34:36I mean, just think as a division three player it was an absolute
- 34:39grind. I can only imagine at the
- 34:42division, one level, what type of grind.
- 34:46Use, especially for guys that are playing multiple years,
- 34:49especially for guys that you have other things on their plate
- 34:52as well. Yeah, so yeah.
- 34:55So that's the way the direction went with DJ and then finally,
- 35:00you know, Richard Purnell, he commits to Liberty just the
- 35:04other day. I'm glad he did land somewhere
- 35:10rather quickly just, you know, him?
- 35:12Yeah. Good for him.
- 35:13I mean that's that. If you if you want to stay in
- 35:17stay and you doesn't work out at a power 5 program.
- 35:23I mean, right now, Liberty or ODU, or probably the places you
- 35:27want to be in terms of whether you want to stay there for four
- 35:30years or whether you want to give it a one or two-year shot
- 35:33and then, you know, transfer, get the transfer portal to get
- 35:37back on the power 5 level. Yeah.
- 35:40Because those, those schools are still in showcase games every
- 35:43year. Yeah, they are you get you your
- 35:45TV time? Get eyes on you, we still don't
- 35:47know. The reason why I know we'd love
- 35:51to know, but we don't know why right now, but it look like
- 35:55Pride talk with Lauren Johnson out of Highland Springs, and a
- 35:59path was given to keep his spot. But it didn't happen and they
- 36:02release some of his Loi. That's something.
- 36:04They did not have to do. Yeah.
- 36:06It could have literally set on that thing until the end of
- 36:10Until August when he has to enroll but they didn't they did
- 36:13the right thing early. So what's once whatever?
- 36:19Thing was not that she or like, all right, well, you go do what
- 36:22you need to do, you find? You're free to do that and not
- 36:26and I, you know, you can you can criticize prior, you can
- 36:29criticize the situation, but I think overall, you know, you
- 36:34always want to get a guy from Alice Springs on your team, but
- 36:37if there are certain things that whether it's the university not
- 36:40allowing or whether it's just a level that you need your players
- 36:45to perform at all the field. Or, or whatever it is, you know,
- 36:52you can't make exceptions or at some point, you know, the rule
- 36:57doesn't matter or absolutely. If there were things that go on
- 37:03and things weren't met, you have to stand on your laurels on that
- 37:07because you start breaking them left and right for certain
- 37:10players and certain things. Then what are your what are you
- 37:13resting on anyway so you don't lose your what locker room with
- 37:17planks. That's the thing.
- 37:19So why did I get it in, man? Like I said, it is what it is?
- 37:24Yeah. I wish we shall Prevail nothing
- 37:25but the best in anyone pretending that this isn't a
- 37:29blow for the Hokies is probably getting themselves in his blood
- 37:34because he was underrated, he was an unwilling, we got rated,
- 37:37he was underrated and I think, you know, we talked about him
- 37:41being a tweener in that hurting his overall ranking, you know,
- 37:44if he did, if he did end up in a three technique, I think he
- 37:46would have been all right with us.
- 37:48Played at that level, and that's an easy position this year and
- 37:54next. So you know, thankfully, we've
- 37:57got some other guys coming in. Hopefully the young guys will
- 38:00show out and we're able to shore up that position group, but it's
- 38:05definitely going to hurt for sure.
- 38:07Absolutely. Alright.
- 38:09So we got to talk about this because I thought he was in the
- 38:13Hall of Fame, but he's not. So Corey Moore, the man who
- 38:19coined the Terrordome back in 1999.
- 38:23He's not in the College Football Hall of Fame.
- 38:25He is eligible again this year And I'm sitting here wondering
- 38:32how, how ready drumroll here your credentials?
- 38:36He played two years of division. One football in those two years.
- 38:4331 sacks, including 17 and one season which broke the Big East
- 38:47record. He was a second and 13,
- 38:52All-American in 1998. In 1999, he one-upped it, he
- 38:57went and he was eight unanimous All-American.
- 39:02Also, in both those years, he was the Big East defensive
- 39:05player of the year. One of those years it was
- 39:09unanimous it was the first time it ever happened in the 10-year
- 39:13the 10 years of that conference at that point in time and you go
- 39:16back and think about it, that was a conference where Warren
- 39:19Sapp and some of the best defensive players down at Miami
- 39:22played, not counting, some of the guys, at Tech.
- 39:26In 99. And if you're at Virginia Tech
- 39:29Guy, you already know this. But just to make the case, he
- 39:33won the Nagurski, he won the labardi.
- 39:35He was football. Team uses defensive player of
- 39:37the year. How on God's green earth is
- 39:41literally a stretch of football and two years, where somebody
- 39:45does that not Hall of Fame Worthy?
- 39:50it's not, I mean, there's no way how he's not Already in the
- 39:58whole thing is a seaman. Just 9899 Malone's.
- 40:04I mean it's it he played him season because he was a junko.
- 40:08Yeah. You sit here and you and then
- 40:13well a the sound bites and the way he played.
- 40:19He literally was a Madman on the field.
- 40:23It wasn't like he was sitting here, you know, taking perfect
- 40:26angles. He was literally trying to rip
- 40:28people's heads off. And you know if you ever want to
- 40:32see something funny, a lot of you hokey fans do this, that the
- 40:35presser at the Sugar Bowl in the national championship is still
- 40:39one of the funniest pressers of all time.
- 40:43Of all time. So whoever you are out there,
- 40:46writers Get right. Put the man in the Hall of Fame.
- 40:50He deserves to be there because he is literally one of the best.
- 40:56Defensive ends all time in college football no doubt, no
- 41:02doubt. All right, we're going to
- 41:04mention this real quick for those who haven't seen it.
- 41:09July 18th, Hardy would part Craft brewery at West Creek out
- 41:15here in the West End of Richmond, the tailgate tour
- 41:18continues. Coach Brent pry from five to
- 41:21seven will be there. I'm going to assume it's going
- 41:23to be some other players or some other probably someplace.
- 41:26Is it that point probably some coaches will be their tickets
- 41:31already purchased on in? I think me and Brian were
- 41:35wondering a couple months ago. We saw our friends in Northern
- 41:37Virginia and some people down at the beach.
- 41:39Getting it's like what the hell is he coming to Richmond?
- 41:42Jesus Christ. This is where they brew the
- 41:43Hokie beer. Yeah, we figured it was going to
- 41:47come back around and it did and it said Hardy would, which makes
- 41:51sense? And I'm excited for a man
- 41:54looking forward to it. Looking Forward to hearing
- 41:58things that, you know, a little little bit further than what
- 42:01we're getting some of the media clips, and meet and greets, and
- 42:04all that stuff, and just being around other fellow keys and
- 42:08having something to cheer about I think is going to be nice.
- 42:11Yup. So it's 20 bucks for attendance.
- 42:14You do get two free drinks and they're going to have light
- 42:17food, which if you've ever done any sort of the Hokie club
- 42:20stuff, any locations, it's usually like that.
- 42:24And usually, the be very high This one of the cool things
- 42:27about going to these events is usually have access to the
- 42:31coaches. Take a look at my Twitter
- 42:34picture. It will Bud Foster.
- 42:36I met him at one of those Eco event.
- 42:37Talk to him five or six minutes. Probably a little bit too long,
- 42:41but yeah, Curtis going along in the conversation.
- 42:46Never hey, I met coach cab to coach a, they should like invite
- 42:51coach calf to all these events. So he can just roast other teams
- 42:54and make fun of other players. So he's a great one.
- 42:58All right, when they they're not coming to Wilkesboro rob.
- 43:03You just need to get us a report on that cross town rival yours.
- 43:10What's his name? Brian.
- 43:11King us with Cayman Smith, we we're going to get some
- 43:15detailed. We're going to some detailed
- 43:18reporting on Caitlin Smith when coach Robbie Compton defense has
- 43:22to go against that kid on the other line that you see here, we
- 43:25want to find Would they are playing and bring him in, on
- 43:28that Sunday to kill us. All right, Ron before we jump
- 43:33into the big piece tonight which is the the brain fry, the
- 43:38interview the quotes and stuff from a couple weeks ago as we
- 43:42look through with on the athletic with Andy bitters
- 43:45reporting we are going to take a quick break for a message from
- 43:51our digital Partners as we take a quick break.
- 43:54We'd like to tell you about getting your A free website
- 43:56report from our digital partner, Grassroots, digital marketing
- 43:59Studio. They'll tell you how your
- 44:00website ranks on Google on-site, SEO and social media.
- 44:04No commitment to buy anything. You can get your free report by
- 44:07visiting. Grassroots digital studio.com
- 44:10forward slash free Dash website, Dash report.
- 44:13Now back to the episode. All right Braun.
- 44:16So let's kick this. It was an interview was about 12
- 44:20days ago. Now we're you know we looked at
- 44:24Andy bitters, info a lot. Of the guys had stuff, but let's
- 44:28start with this one on the defensive side of the ball.
- 44:32Braylon Moore has moved to the offensive side of the ball.
- 44:36About. Damn time.
- 44:39Are you shot? Not shot.
- 44:41Not shocked about not shot. And the love with Brent price
- 44:46said about it. You know, he talked about, he
- 44:50can be a good defensive tackle which he can.
- 44:54But then he went that, I love the step when he said but he can
- 44:58be an all-conference offensive lineman.
- 45:00Yeah, I think that's the big thing that we're seeing is that
- 45:05you know as prize getting a feel for what these kids can do he
- 45:09see all right, this guy might be able to help us more here.
- 45:13This guy like you to help us more there and not just us.
- 45:17This guy might be able to Excel and maximize his potential here
- 45:22or there. And I think That's the biggest
- 45:25thing because you know yeah when you have depth issues like we
- 45:29have a defensive tackle which we also have them on all the July
- 45:31to. So you know, it's probably going
- 45:35to pay Paul here but when we're looking at, we're looking at
- 45:41this situation, it's about getting guys into positions
- 45:44where they can be their best regardless of where those holes
- 45:47are in the roster because You know, you can plug you can, you
- 45:51can find a guy in a portal or you can you know, have a guy
- 45:55that next man up but you can get a guy that's out of position for
- 46:00three or four seasons and they never get to their potential.
- 46:04You've wasted that yes you didn't get guys where they can
- 46:07be their best and then you figure out how to fill in those
- 46:11holes if you need to. And I feel like that, that's
- 46:13what he's going for here. Yeah 100%.
- 46:16It's a great way to put it there.
- 46:18Braun you you deal with the deal with the whole if a guy can be
- 46:23significant just better but significantly better at one
- 46:26position in the other like you said damn the torpedoes like
- 46:30we're putting them on all offensive line could he help us
- 46:32on the defensive line? Yeah but he can really really
- 46:35help us on the offensive line. Now speaking of the defensive
- 46:39line the comment about pain in his versatility.
- 46:42I got a little bit shocked by that because he talked about Out
- 46:45good pass rusher and all this but when he mentioned that he
- 46:50thinks he has the potential to slide inside on passing Downs.
- 46:54I mean if that's the case that is a win-win for the defensive
- 46:58line on both the edge and the interior yeah let's just be a
- 47:03little bit, little bit more pass rush focused when we go into
- 47:08those nickel packages without really losing something.
- 47:11Yeah, I think that's that's going to pay some.
- 47:14Do it is because we are Earth in all that d-tackle position this
- 47:19year. So anybody that can give us some
- 47:22snaps even if it's only, you know, two or three, a series,
- 47:26right? Like if anybody blow can help
- 47:30here. So I think that's going to be
- 47:31something that's going to be big for us.
- 47:33So I like that, I'd like interested to see how paying
- 47:37holds up whether he comes in and immediately takes over
- 47:41obviously, Garbodor. If he's going to be more that
- 47:44first man, out on the Second line.
- 47:46It's going to be interesting to see how that that shakes out,
- 47:50but he's at least going to be on the 2D.
- 47:52So look for him to be getting significant amount of steps on
- 47:56top of, as we said, they're plugging in and d-tackle at the
- 47:59three technique on some of those bigger packages.
- 48:03Absolutely. I just when he when he when I
- 48:07read about that detached from like that helps so much because
- 48:09you got Pollard Kendrick and yet Bowie, you know, they can play,
- 48:13you need one more and now You know, DNC same way though
- 48:19because you've got Garbutt the known entity.
- 48:22Everybody likes Cole Nelson and feels like he could be the
- 48:25Breakthrough guy this year but there's just not enough on the
- 48:29end. It's just not enough on the
- 48:30defensive line in general. I mean, you know, I'd love to
- 48:34see something in the next few weeks, you know.
- 48:36Yeah. I mean, I think it feel decent
- 48:38about the too deep like you got garbage.
- 48:40He's a pretty good player for us.
- 48:43Yes, he is. And, you know, you got the
- 48:45potential of Pain Griffin can give you some stuff and I think
- 48:49we're seeing cold Nelson come along.
- 48:52Who's going to be that five? In that six that are going to
- 48:54get those, you know, about 10 steps a game that are going to
- 48:58make or break. Whether you can hold up, right?
- 49:01It's true. So that that's going to be the
- 49:03question mark. I think.
- 49:04I think we're going to be be okay, those first two lines,
- 49:08both at Deanne and d-tackle. It's going to be those, like I
- 49:13said, 10 to a dozen snaps that that Lines going to have to take
- 49:17that's going to be the question marker.
- 49:19Are they going to be of the give us enough to hold up?
- 49:22Yeah, it's also wondering can see j.mccrary come up a little
- 49:26bit more, just a little bit more.
- 49:27You look good. In the spring question is, can
- 49:29he take that step and the same with the nape and they look good
- 49:32in the spring? But can they take the steps?
- 49:35But like you said, Brian, if you tell us McCray and Pinay, yeah,
- 49:40that didn't mean to make that rhyme.
- 49:41But it did. If you can give you can like you
- 49:44said, just steal a Snap here. Here they're saying, let's
- 49:48happens to be over there and just being effective.
- 49:52Not, you know, not necessarily blowing the doors off.
- 49:56Somebody, the being effective good technique, you know whether
- 50:00it's causing disruption holding down, you know, holding up a
- 50:05blocker. That's it still has a little
- 50:08things as the game of inches that's going to be Sookie.
- 50:11Now, speaking of games of inches in the linebacker room, seems
- 50:16like Brent problems Dax to lose some inches and get a little bit
- 50:20leaner and lose a little bit of weight over the next couple
- 50:23months here. Yeah, looks like he wants to
- 50:26actually drop as much weight as he can.
- 50:29Which I mean Yeah, that's going to be interesting to see how
- 50:34that shakes for him. In this system, having a lean
- 50:38and fast linebacker is more important.
- 50:41Even at a meeting that Mike. So you know, that's probably the
- 50:46move at this point especially since we don't know, whether Dax
- 50:50is going to be our best option at that position or not.
- 50:54Yet, it seems like, you know, we talked earlier about Keyshawn
- 51:02artist sliding in there that, you know, He wasn't quite there
- 51:07from a leadership standpoint even though he was at least at
- 51:12or near dax's level in terms of on-field play.
- 51:16So it's going to be interesting to see if there's a rotation
- 51:19there, what that looks like. But I think a later Dax is
- 51:24better because I'd rather Dax Dex is shown me that he
- 51:29struggles sometimes shedding blocks whether he's at the way
- 51:34he was last year or at the lady was two years ago in 2020.
- 51:39So I think I will take the leaner and faster Dax who can
- 51:44potentially get to the edge, get to the outside, run sideline to
- 51:50sideline a little bit better because he's probably going to
- 51:54have to have those questions. Those head scratcher, please.
- 51:58Regardless and and that's that's just I think the player that he
- 52:02is at this point. We'll see if he can raise his
- 52:04game up under Pride under Marv. But yeah I would say a my
- 52:11expectations so I think the Winger the better because it
- 52:14gives him a little bit more. Versatility to make plays
- 52:20outside the box. Yep.
- 52:21And that's something that brought talked about is like the
- 52:23mic in today's game, can't just play inside.
- 52:26They also have to be able to arrange and that's why he was
- 52:28looking for getting leaner. Now, one guy, we know that can
- 52:31range is the projected starter at will, which is Alan Tisdale.
- 52:37But one thing about Brown Prowler, finding he does not
- 52:39mince words. He's not afraid to openly praise
- 52:43or constructively criticize people and he was that way with
- 52:47Tisdale. In this interview and it will,
- 52:49he talked about basically, hey, you know, when he's on, he's on,
- 52:52he really good to be out there for us, but then he talked
- 52:56about. But when he's fatigued, he gets
- 52:58sloppy, and technique. He, he's just not only good
- 53:01players and it kind of in a roundabout way.
- 53:05Ryan began discussing where there might be some Sam's
- 53:09practicing, it will in the fall. Yeah, yeah.
- 53:13I think that's to fold. So I don't necessarily say this
- 53:16is processing. Kids losing his job, he did say
- 53:20that there's some competition there, right?
- 53:23Yeah. Yeah.
- 53:24Yeah. Keller.
- 53:25And a couple of the Sams sliding over as well.
- 53:27I know you just talked about. So I think you know, there's
- 53:30there's some options that we had there but I think what this is
- 53:33telling us number one, it's an a nation behind what we've been
- 53:37seeing on film for the last three years because we're
- 53:41looking and we're saying damn Tisdale will have these plays
- 53:45where he looks like the best defender on the field and then
- 53:48two plays later, he looks like he's lost or just isn't getting
- 53:53to where it needs to be. Like there's there's just so
- 53:55many things that were just head. Scratchers that we didn't know
- 54:00whether is it effort, is it fatigue?
- 54:03Is it not knowing assignment like, Like there were so many
- 54:06things that we had question marks on this definitely goes a
- 54:09long way. I think towards answering those
- 54:12questions about his inconsistent play.
- 54:14The question is number one, can he get better clean now in the
- 54:18fall because It's not so much, a lot of fatigue.
- 54:22I mean a lot of fatigue is mental, right?
- 54:24I mean, because I mean, you know, these in shape.
- 54:27Yes. I mean he's not going, he's
- 54:30going through this with everybody else.
- 54:31So, you know, he's in shape. He at some point, there's got to
- 54:35be a mental block where when you feel tired, when you feel like
- 54:38you can't give anymore, you give a little bit more.
- 54:41Yeah. And you got to push their with
- 54:42that, that's a mental thing and sometimes it takes I think, I
- 54:46think this competition. Is this like culture of
- 54:52competition that prize breeding could help with that, because he
- 54:56is being pushed beyond that limit consistently.
- 55:00You know that given the option to Quinn's, not giving the
- 55:03option to not, not get to the line or not, not go through it.
- 55:07So it's more than that. So I'm hoping that that type of
- 55:11atmosphere is going to help him so.
- 55:13But number two, When we talk about other guys getting reps
- 55:18and we talked about Sam's getting reps, if you can't get
- 55:21to his tail to where you want to be, if you got other guys that
- 55:24can go in there and give him some blows, some extra blows
- 55:29that he can be fresh for more the game.
- 55:33You get a better Tisdale and you don't get as many holes in those
- 55:38moments where he's fatigued. Exactly.
- 55:42Now, one thing he did say and obviously, Goes to one of
- 55:46talking about having the same practice.
- 55:48He feels good about the Sands. He feels good about Kiante.
- 55:51He feels good about Jr. He feels good about kalai.
- 55:56In the thing is, I think me and you talked about the other day.
- 55:59Brian Gionta is the best overall, he can do a little bit
- 56:02of everything. He can cover, he can Blitz.
- 56:05He can play Man, Jr. Safety.
- 56:08Probably more coverage. Maybe play a little man,
- 56:10collage. You're going to come attack so
- 56:13we might be tipping our hands. Let's I'd say you got to give
- 56:16tis a blow. You move Kiante over to will and
- 56:18you bring loss of him. You might be tipping your hand.
- 56:22Hey, we're coming this time because we've got on the field.
- 56:26But sometimes that doesn't matter, does it, its execution,
- 56:29like, you know, what's going to happen?
- 56:31Now, you have to execute against what we're doing.
- 56:34Yeah, be 75% of the time. We're bringing an extra man.
- 56:39Anyway, anyway, so there's going to be some degree of attacking
- 56:43that that's happening. regardless of who's at saying or
- 56:48who's at will, I don't necessarily call it tipping your
- 56:51hand, but I think he's definitely saying I mean, you
- 56:54know, we're coming after you now we're just saying we got this
- 56:56specific guy coming after you and you know if I know Lawson's
- 57:01coming after me I might get rid of that ball a little bit
- 57:04quicker than I'm ready to Just a little bit, just a little bit
- 57:09because he's shown how quick he can get there gonna get it's
- 57:13like the Walker thing. If you keep Walker out there
- 57:15with their, maybe they're just dropping him in the flats or
- 57:18some sort of coverage, not Blitzen, but I think how he
- 57:23feels about the Sam's, really, really tells you that couple of
- 57:28those guys, especially Lawson that He looks at athleticism on
- 57:32the field. If you've got some high
- 57:35athleticism he's going to find a way to get those guys on the
- 57:38field because of the way he likes to attack.
- 57:41He values speed and athleticism over some of some of those other
- 57:47things that I think the previous regime a evaluating over and
- 57:52I'll leave it at that. I think he's looking to get guys
- 57:58that are fast that like to hit. And that like to go after the
- 58:02quarterback, especially if those linebacker positions.
- 58:07There you go. All right, I probably said it
- 58:09best so I'll throw it up here. What's that?
- 58:12You know what? Skating, it can you stop.
- 58:14Can you stop if you know, it's coming, can you stop in a lot of
- 58:17teams? Cannot.
- 58:18All right, let's go to the room that he said basically he feels
- 58:22the best about the defensive back room.
- 58:24Talked about the safeties, he feels like there's four guys
- 58:27there between Connor. People strowman and Hawkins
- 58:31which is great to hear because only one of those guys Guys is
- 58:37out this year after this year. And that's Connor.
- 58:41So that rooms ready to roll. Not only safety.
- 58:44The safety room is in. Good hands, going forward for at
- 58:47least the next two to three years.
- 58:49So you feel good about that. You got a bona fide leader in
- 58:53that room. But you also have you know, one
- 58:56guy that's played significant snaps, you've got a guy that has
- 59:01played some decent time in his short time here with strowman
- 59:05and then you got Hawkins, that's kind of mixed.
- 59:07Here are there throughout his time in Blacksburg.
- 59:11So you got a really good mix of ability and experience.
- 59:18And we of the question is going to be is Connors transition
- 59:21going to be a good thing for him will see.
- 59:25I think that's the biggest question mark for everybody
- 59:27right now with the BBS, but in terms of just experience and
- 59:31ability, I feel pretty good about safety.
- 59:34Can I say something real quick? Yep, I think if Connor wasn't
- 59:39doing a good as job at safety as he could have been down at.
- 59:44I had to Sam. I think Brynn, probably flipped
- 59:47him. I don't think he would have
- 59:48waited her hesitated. If he did, not feel comfortable
- 59:51leaving him back at free, safety for field, safety, whatever you
- 59:55want to call it. I mean, look how he did the rest
- 59:58of the year. He's not been afraid to just
- 59:59move guys. Even guys, you're expecting like
- 1:00:02Braylon. Yeah.
- 1:00:03Mean, you know, Braylon did not have a bad spring and It's of
- 1:00:07tackle, he just felt better there.
- 1:00:09So I think if he felt better about it, he'd moved it.
- 1:00:13Let's talk about the corners. Again, again, a group, he feels
- 1:00:16good about with, you know, Chapman and Murray strong, and
- 1:00:20Elijah Howard, and DJ Carvey. But he did mention again.
- 1:00:25He still wants one more. What what what sort of Why is he
- 1:00:31wanting one more and is the one more?
- 1:00:33Do you think he hasn't? We haven't seen anybody come
- 1:00:36through the portal because it's, he doesn't want one more just
- 1:00:39for this year. He wants one more for two to
- 1:00:41three years or why is that? Would that would be my
- 1:00:45inclination out the gate because I think he feels I've go one of
- 1:00:50two ways. So let me let me put a caveat in
- 1:00:53there so I think he feels I think he feels good about
- 1:00:56chadman, he feels good about strong and he feels good about
- 1:01:00Harvey when he's in the slot and I think he is fine with Marie
- 1:01:07and fine with Howard or Johnson. Whoever is playing boundary and
- 1:01:12field respectively. Okay.
- 1:01:15Now I think what he wants is either, he wants a dude, he
- 1:01:20either wants to do which, I mean, they're very few of them.
- 1:01:24Yeah. And they many people because for
- 1:01:29what this unit has an experience, they definitely lack
- 1:01:34in terms of high ceiling High Caliber player.
- 1:01:39There is not in terms of what they've done so far.
- 1:01:42There is not that guy that's had that one season that has said
- 1:01:47damn you better watch out for him this year.
- 1:01:49Exactly. They're very they're a solid
- 1:01:52Solitude of three guys. Another two guys that you feel
- 1:01:55comfortable with. There's a lot of good depth but
- 1:01:58there's not anybody great on that unit.
- 1:02:02So you're looking for a dude, short of a, dude, you want to
- 1:02:05find a guy that has two to three years of Eligibility left that
- 1:02:09can play in that spot. Either ahead of Murray or ahead
- 1:02:13of Howard and Johnson. That, that, that's what I'm
- 1:02:18thinking, just because they would like to see a little bit
- 1:02:20of a ratchet up with that next man, up there, in case there is
- 1:02:24an injury. Yeah.
- 1:02:26All right, let's flip over the offense run and, you know,
- 1:02:30something that just, I know it jumped out.
- 1:02:32At me, it probably jumped out more.
- 1:02:33So it's you, he was talking about what you seen on tape
- 1:02:37already, Tyler. And Joe, like multiple
- 1:02:40formation? Yeah.
- 1:02:44Yeah. We had a whole lot.
- 1:02:46With that with our buddy Robby cup and this plug-in a little
- 1:02:49bit here for us but we went through, you know, we like
- 1:02:52multiple formations, we like moving tight ends over the field
- 1:02:55in motion. We like lining them up, all over
- 1:02:58the field. We throw some unbalanced,
- 1:03:00formations out there they deploy the tight end, and they use that
- 1:03:05to create the mismatches and the areas where they can outflank
- 1:03:10the defense. Yeah, and that's the bread and
- 1:03:14butter and then they line up and run a play at you.
- 1:03:19But it's just but it's just it's just refreshing to hear it
- 1:03:21though. Because again, I mean it's like
- 1:03:24it's the theme. Probably of the last six months,
- 1:03:27it's the things we wanted to hear about and hear somebody
- 1:03:30talk about. We're hearing about the things
- 1:03:32we see. We're here we're getting some
- 1:03:34answers with, especially talking about how Rudolph use those
- 1:03:38tight ends, you know, you talking about motioning, the
- 1:03:41tight ends. There's a lot of plays.
- 1:03:43They like to do that with or he did like to do that with up at
- 1:03:47Wisconsin, which you feel like you're going.
- 1:03:48To see in the Playbook this year, something else, he was
- 1:03:51very adamant about and I think we all feel this as tech fans
- 1:03:55and just football fans in general.
- 1:03:57He says, they've got to figure out ways to be successful in the
- 1:03:59Run game. And, yes, you know, and I think
- 1:04:02some of the RPO elements that they're bringing in with the
- 1:04:05having 2, or 3 options, whether it be running the ball, or
- 1:04:10passing the ball, I think that's going to help alleviate some of
- 1:04:14that. I think slight drop off that
- 1:04:19we're going to see in terms of offensive line play from this
- 1:04:21unit, this year. I think some of the way they
- 1:04:23have the offensive scheme will allow us to be more successful
- 1:04:28in that. So when I what I say they're I'm
- 1:04:30thinking like so think of UNC UNC for all their great skill
- 1:04:36players, everything have a pretty average to below average
- 1:04:39offensive line, bad things but they can still it.
- 1:04:43When things are click and they can generate yards, they can her
- 1:04:46eight points. Yes, they can.
- 1:04:49So that's kind of what I'm thinking with this scheme, you
- 1:04:53can still generate all things. Even when your offensive line is
- 1:04:57advantage that at best average, in some cases us light
- 1:05:01liability, right? So we didn't talk about this but
- 1:05:05I want to throw this on you. Rudolph has the pedigree of
- 1:05:09creating consistently above average to great offensive
- 1:05:13lines. One of the system like this.
- 1:05:16And let's in let's let's let's project.
- 1:05:19A little bit. Let's say in two years.
- 1:05:22We're a top 15 offensive line in the country.
- 1:05:25What can a system like that doing?
- 1:05:26You have a dominant offensive line, where you can completely
- 1:05:30dictate the terms? Because when you can just line
- 1:05:33up and run effectively, then everything else becomes so much
- 1:05:37more dynamic because you still have to stop the run first,
- 1:05:41right? As a defense.
- 1:05:42That's lonely. That's what you got to do.
- 1:05:44You got to stop the run first? So it becomes so much more
- 1:05:48reliability and so much harder for the defense to stop.
- 1:05:52When you are heavily effective at just lining up and running
- 1:05:57your base, running Blaze, like we're going to come at you and
- 1:06:01then we're going to sprinkle some of the other stuff in and
- 1:06:04by the time you pay attention to what we're doing running at you,
- 1:06:08we're under the other stuff and you're going to be completely
- 1:06:10off guard and because now all those setups work every time
- 1:06:14because they got to honor them. Yep.
- 1:06:17All right. Going back to the running back
- 1:06:19room. Was it did it interest you to
- 1:06:20him talking about that thing? Some running backs might get
- 1:06:23play at wide receiver. Not shocked.
- 1:06:27Nice Shot. You know, we talked about chance
- 1:06:30black but we also think about maybe a brace Duke, my slide up
- 1:06:34there if he's not taking a redshirt year this year.
- 1:06:37Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I mean, that's not going to
- 1:06:41be, I think a big shocker to anyone listening tonight.
- 1:06:44You know, we know, we know chance of black is kind of rain,
- 1:06:47Blackshear 2.0, in terms of his skill, set does a Couple things
- 1:06:52a little better, does a couple things, not quite as good, but I
- 1:06:55think on the whole you can give us that same type of play.
- 1:06:58So I wouldn't be surprised seeing him out there.
- 1:07:03Just to give our wide receiver room.
- 1:07:05I think a little bit more flexibility.
- 1:07:08All right. Um, overall he said just feels
- 1:07:12really good about the running back room.
- 1:07:13He probably feels really good that the running back room.
- 1:07:16No longer has double digits in it, to be honest.
- 1:07:19Yeah, we went from 12 to 9 now down to six.
- 1:07:22I think that's, that's a, that's a nice number that you like to
- 1:07:26grab onto great number another room.
- 1:07:29He talked about feeling really good about and I think we've Do
- 1:07:32this for a while now, but I tend room between Drake between
- 1:07:35Gallo. You mentioned, tie teller who
- 1:07:38was the I think the vision to transfer in which was very
- 1:07:42interesting that he mentioned him had not heard much play
- 1:07:45talked about you know obviously we know bombers going to be
- 1:07:47doing stuff in Brian's favorite they con right they Qantas
- 1:07:53joining the team this summer. He's already there so let's
- 1:07:57let's not forget him. Like I said I think he has the
- 1:07:59potential to Make some noise and you one just because of the
- 1:08:05skill set, he brings and the frame that he brings out the
- 1:08:08gate. Yeah, the other pieces we talked
- 1:08:12about to we've been looking at quarterback and you know it from
- 1:08:17the comments and just everyday everything's played.
- 1:08:19You feel like Jason Brown. We feel good about him but he is
- 1:08:25just going to have to do a ton to overtake Wells.
- 1:08:29Yeah, they had it named the starter but they have been that
- 1:08:33unless something significantly changes Wells as the guy.
- 1:08:36That's pretty much what Brad Glenn said.
- 1:08:41Dallas Texas outline, right? I think so, yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:44I haven't had a chance to read that yet, but yeah, it was going
- 1:08:47to say, Brad said a lot talked about running.
- 1:08:51What probably 8 to 10 times, but not all of them be in designs.
- 1:08:57Yeah, he said he said, you know, somewhere between nine and
- 1:08:59eleven rushes for my quarterback.
- 1:09:02You know, game getting 60 to 80 yards but probably a third to a
- 1:09:08half of those are not designed. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:09:11So basically we're going to have some design with the other ones
- 1:09:14are just going to be breakdowns and teaching guys when it breaks
- 1:09:17just go not six, not 60 but six sometimes it's all you need is
- 1:09:23six and eleven times. Some rpos have a quarterback
- 1:09:26Rush element in them. So you know, that's usually the
- 1:09:29third option in some, in some cases you may you get, you get
- 1:09:33the design run, you get the quick pass out and, you know,
- 1:09:37sometimes depending on the design, there's an option for
- 1:09:40that. Quarterback to to take off
- 1:09:42depending on what reading is. So, That might be anyone you
- 1:09:47call that a design run when you call that her, something
- 1:09:51different but what could be a scramble but still look.
- 1:09:56Designed like if it's going to be a RPO and you're gonna have a
- 1:09:59hard slander hard what a hard book or something and it's
- 1:10:02covered perfectly. Well you know, you see it, read
- 1:10:06eyes up but then they immediately run.
- 1:10:09It's just like, oh, that's an RPO designer on.
- 1:10:12It's like no one. The slant was taken away.
- 1:10:14The guy came and took it away. Way he immediately when he
- 1:10:17didn't see if he knew he just had to take off.
- 1:10:20I like what you've you, we were talking about what the
- 1:10:23quarterback room is and your what you said, it summed up my
- 1:10:28thoughts perfectly sir. Go ahead.
- 1:10:30Yeah, so you know we're comparing Grant Wells to a
- 1:10:33Toyota Camry everybody. Not flashy, not not the biggest
- 1:10:39name on the list in terms of what you'd like to have, but
- 1:10:43it's well equipped. It's got all the stuff you need.
- 1:10:45It can make The throws. And it'll get you where you
- 1:10:49going. And I think I saw him look giddy
- 1:10:53up in the six of them. Yeah.
- 1:10:54Yeah. You're not going to, you know,
- 1:10:57drop out on the interstate when you try to try to pull out in
- 1:11:01the in heavy traffic, you'll learn you'll be able to get up
- 1:11:04there pretty quick, but I mean it's not going to it's not a
- 1:11:10it's not a Camaro. It's not it's not going to blow
- 1:11:12your doors off, man. So it's Not a Corvette.
- 1:11:18Exactly. But for the most part, for the
- 1:11:21most part, we don't need a Corvette.
- 1:11:24You need. You want a Corvette every 1012,
- 1:11:28snaps right. There are situations where a
- 1:11:30Corvette. Gives you a significantly better
- 1:11:32outcome. But for the most part snap to
- 1:11:37snap a Toyota is going to give you the same output, exactly?
- 1:11:42Alright, that's all I'm saying. Yeah, let's talk about the
- 1:11:44whiteout room real quick. You mentioned feeling
- 1:11:46comfortable with Smith and Lofton and then kind of saying
- 1:11:50he needs more from Blue Gosnell and right.
- 1:11:52Does that worry a little bit that?
- 1:11:54I mean he came out and said that I'm not worried about that.
- 1:11:59I think you're just anyone that has watched the spring game and
- 1:12:04go Look to things saw that, you know, it wasn't Blues best
- 1:12:07performance and I think some of that was related to the
- 1:12:10offensive line play and the fact that Jason Brown didn't have a
- 1:12:14ton of time, but also he had that big drop Wide Open Play.
- 1:12:17The could have moved the stakes on third down, you got to make
- 1:12:21plays like that at the power 5 level, you can't have drops when
- 1:12:25it's a chance to move the sticks, and keep your, your
- 1:12:28drive alive because every Point matters in certain games, right?
- 1:12:33So, We can't have that but you know, I think between what he's
- 1:12:38dealing with. Yeah, as he as he came over to
- 1:12:43Blacksburg and I don't know if that's still waiting on him and
- 1:12:47he's still working through that. But you know, I can obviously
- 1:12:50empathize with that situation and understand that, if that was
- 1:12:54going on in my life, I probably might not be as focus on the on
- 1:12:59what I need to do, as I would undergo normal circumstances, so
- 1:13:02I get that and hopefully he's Do that.
- 1:13:04Mostly he, he gets to where he wants to because, you know, he
- 1:13:07wants to go out and show out. So yes, he does for our sake and
- 1:13:11his I'm hoping he's able to get to the level that he can play
- 1:13:14it, because we've seen what he can do with the highest level of
- 1:13:18his game. So we're hoping he can match
- 1:13:21that here, not playing against Power, 5 competition, heavy ACC.
- 1:13:26Yep. And again, he's had a couple
- 1:13:28good seasons and hopefully being primarily with the ones.
- 1:13:34Yes, and then again what happened?
- 1:13:38It doesn't it won't leave his mind.
- 1:13:41It won't leave his mind. But you hope that's time goes
- 1:13:43on, it's not at the Forefront because I think to be very
- 1:13:47honest, Jaden blue to have practice in the spring was
- 1:13:52amazing. Yeah, happened that that in
- 1:13:56itself is so much about him, but hopefully gets in the fall
- 1:14:02things a little bit more. Or calm, the kid can show out.
- 1:14:07I think the kid can be the stick mover, and we're going to need
- 1:14:11him. And I think him playing with
- 1:14:12Wells is going to help, not knock on Jason Brown, but I
- 1:14:17think playing with Wells is going to help plan being
- 1:14:19consistent which a lot of times. That's what it takes, right?
- 1:14:22Sometimes you just started getting out there and you're
- 1:14:24playing with the same group. Every day.
- 1:14:26You run the same route, you're playing the same position
- 1:14:28consistency, and you go right into it.
- 1:14:34All right, big guy. Let's let's talk about it
- 1:14:36because this is the worry point. Oh yeah, Sublime.
- 1:14:43And you know when somebody says I feel good about six guys And
- 1:14:49you can name five of them. I know the father died in five
- 1:14:56of the six that he feels good about and thankfully five is all
- 1:15:01you need to start an offensive line.
- 1:15:03Yeah, but five and five is not going to make it through a 12 oz
- 1:15:07is not going to make it through a power five seats and no, it
- 1:15:10will not. So you feel good about Johnny.
- 1:15:12We feel good about Katie. Feel good about silos, feel
- 1:15:15pretty good about Parker and feel good enough about Jess.
- 1:15:19Chuck Hansen, right? Exactly.
- 1:15:23You see, when we look at, he said, six, who is the sixth?
- 1:15:25And that got my mind. That got my gears turning Heroes
- 1:15:28like, right? Let's when I look at the spring
- 1:15:32game, the I was there. I watched it again a couple
- 1:15:35times afterwards. Jack hollifield is the person
- 1:15:39that look, the best on the field that wasn't in that group of
- 1:15:44five that I just named. So, he's Jack, hollifield.
- 1:15:47The six is it a bob shit? Who did not have a really great
- 1:15:54spring game? Is it Daniel Miller chick who
- 1:15:59had a up and down spring game? That's the question and I think
- 1:16:07it's no I had to put my if I had to put my money in they will be
- 1:16:10J. You think it's Jack?
- 1:16:12Okay. Yeah.
- 1:16:12Because there's no way anybody else because everybody else is
- 1:16:15either Walton walk home or true freshman right?
- 1:16:19From? Yeah.
- 1:16:19Our calculations. Maybe maybe giving you said he
- 1:16:27played the best there, but when you mix matching offensive lines
- 1:16:30and your mix mash and defensive lines, that's really tough to
- 1:16:34see, right? He was with the group that
- 1:16:36should have probably best the best.
- 1:16:39So, so we'll see what with Johnny was with Silas.
- 1:16:43He was, he was with that group. So, you know, whether that you
- 1:16:49have having Johnny Jordan, because there is a steep
- 1:16:52drop-off at center after Johnny Jordan.
- 1:16:54So having Johnny Jordan as your Center makes everybody else
- 1:16:59better. I'll take I'll say that 4.4.1
- 1:17:02there. If you were if it's from a
- 1:17:04spring game perspective of Johnny Jordan was your Center
- 1:17:07your offensive line by default was going to be So you take that
- 1:17:12into account and look at that, is that logic is performing
- 1:17:15better or is Jack performing better because of his ability is
- 1:17:20he showing consistency and practice and in scrimmages, when
- 1:17:23he's mixed matched with with different players?
- 1:17:25That that's what we'll find out. I'm sure.
- 1:17:28No. Yeah.
- 1:17:28Because we're definitely going to have some point C, at least a
- 1:17:32six, probably a seven or an eight linemen that's going to
- 1:17:36have to pull some significant duty this year.
- 1:17:40So I mean if it's offensive line I mean I played it.
- 1:17:44I got dicked up I miss games. We usually had two or three
- 1:17:50offensive line. Miss at least one game every
- 1:17:52year that's going to happen. So we're going to have to have
- 1:17:56at least another guy step up and leave me and hopefully one that
- 1:18:01can play tackle because right now maybe Bob shit can play
- 1:18:05tackle. He's the six because he can play
- 1:18:09tackle. But you talk about getting
- 1:18:11nicked up. And again why would why my
- 1:18:13people are in this and Hokie Nation or followed by and by he
- 1:18:16said it if we have a couple guys get nixed it's sort of the
- 1:18:20that's the oh shit moment. Yeah absolutely anything beyond
- 1:18:26and interior sorry, anything beyond a guard.
- 1:18:29Getting nicked. I'm worried you know.
- 1:18:36It's going to be sort of one of those ruff ruff Seasons because
- 1:18:41it's going to be like if we go through 12 games and no
- 1:18:44offensive lineman have significant or Miss time.
- 1:18:47It's a miracle. So go ahead.
- 1:18:51Start praying, you know, some stuff.
- 1:18:53Go look, I feel like, you know, Jack, maybe Dan can give you a
- 1:18:58game. They have a half.
- 1:19:05I don't know if a tackle or Center goes down.
- 1:19:07I'm worried. I'm very worried.
- 1:19:10It left. Unless Jack can complete Center
- 1:19:12as well as he can play guard, but I feel like a jacket play
- 1:19:16center as well. As you can play guard, he would
- 1:19:17have been playing Center in the spring game.
- 1:19:21Potentially. All right.
- 1:19:23One real quick thing. This is not hokey related Brian
- 1:19:27but I just saw this announced earlier today.
- 1:19:31The next five years of Army Navy was announced, okay?
- 1:19:35And here's a couple interesting ones, they're going to go.
- 1:19:39Maybe the first time ever, they're going to play in Boston.
- 1:19:41Are in play at Gillette Stadium on the 23rd, 250th anniversary
- 1:19:46of the Boston Tea Party and 2023 in, right?
- 1:19:50This That I don't know how you get tickets.
- 1:19:54December 14th, 2024 FedEx Field. For the 225th Anniversary of the
- 1:20:03USS Constitution. I've been told I like that
- 1:20:09they're celebrating that I hate that.
- 1:20:11It's at FedEx Field Stadium. But From what I've been told
- 1:20:19from people that went like if there is ever a gain, you want
- 1:20:22to go to. That's not your team's game and
- 1:20:25you can get tickets. Go to this one.
- 1:20:27If any if any game can make FedEx palatable it's probably
- 1:20:31it's probably is this. Alright, anything else broken
- 1:20:35and Hokie Nation while we've been here for hours and 21
- 1:20:39minutes? Nothing of note, man.
- 1:20:40I think we're good to go. All right, well, that will wrap
- 1:20:43up this episode of The Boundary Corner podcast.
