- 0:00Speaker 1: With four days of shore leave after eight months at sea,
- 0:03Speaker 1: sailors Joe Brady and Clarence Doolittle make their way from
- 0:07Speaker 1: San Pedro to Hollywood near the end of World War II. There,
- 0:12Speaker 1: confident Joe and his shy shipmate cross paths with Susan Abbott,
- 0:17Speaker 1: a young Hollywood extra hoping to become a singer, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: her nephew Donald. On December 29th, 1947, Lux Radio Theater
- 0:27Speaker 1: brought its 596th episode to CBS, Anchors Away, adapted from
- 0:33Speaker 1: the 1945 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical film. Frank Sinatra, Catherine Grayson, and
- 0:40Speaker 1: Gene Kelly reprised their film roles, with William Keeley producing
- 0:44Speaker 1: and narrating and Louis Silvers directing the music. We now
- 0:49Speaker 1: take you back to the original broadcast.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Lux presents Hollywood.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Lever Brothers Company, the makers of Lux Flakes, bring you
- 1:08Speaker 3: the Lux Radio Theater, starring Frank Sinatra, Catherine Grayson, and
- 1:13Speaker 3: Gene Kelly in Anchors Away.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. William Keeley.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. And to that, may
- 1:30Speaker 4: I add very special holiday greetings. This time of year
- 1:34Speaker 4: calls for music, gaiety, and laughter. And so we've gone
- 1:38Speaker 4: out of our way to bring you all three in
- 1:41Speaker 4: a play that so many of you have requested. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's
- 1:45Speaker 4: great screen hit, Anchors Away. And to do it full justice,
- 1:49Speaker 4: we present its three original stars, Frank Sinatra, Catherine Grayson,
- 1:54Speaker 4: and Gene Kelly. in a delightful comedy romance highlighted by
- 1:59Speaker 4: unforgettable songs. Songs I'm sure you'll all be humming as
- 2:04Speaker 4: you leave the theater. Humming tomorrow, maybe, as you wash
- 2:08Speaker 4: those dishes in rich, mild luck suds. For especially this
- 2:13Speaker 4: time of year, when entertaining is an almost daily ritual
- 2:17Speaker 4: and time is precious, I'm sure Lux Flakes are brightening
- 2:21Speaker 4: the holidays by helping you care for your nice things
- 2:25Speaker 4: more easily and quickly. And in that way, they're promising
- 2:30Speaker 4: a happy new year to you all. It's time for
- 2:33Speaker 4: Anchors Away, and here's our first act. Starring Frank Sinatra
- 2:37Speaker 4: as Clarence Doolittle, Catherine Grayson as Susan, and Gene Kelly
- 2:42Speaker 4: as Joe Brady. It's toward the end of the war,
- 2:54Speaker 4: and one of our fighting ships has just dropped anchor
- 2:57Speaker 4: in the harbor of San Pedro, California. Among the sailors
- 3:00Speaker 4: granted a four-day leave after eight months at sea are
- 3:04Speaker 4: Joe Brady and Clarence Doolittle. Joe, with his first step
- 3:08Speaker 4: on shore, instinctively dashed for the nearest telephone. Clarence, as always,
- 3:13Speaker 4: tagging at his heels.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Gosh, Joe, looks like every sailor who got leave wants
- 3:20Speaker 2: a telephone.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Hey, pipe down, will you?
- 3:22Speaker 5: Hello? Hello, Miss Laverne? Miss Lola Laverne?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Hey, shut up, you guys, will you? Yeah, can't you
- 3:30Speaker 2: see he's talking to his girl?
- 3:31Speaker 5: Is this the face that launched a thousand ships?
- 3:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it's Joe, all right. Hello, you beautiful creature. Well,
- 3:42Speaker 5: it'll be a couple hours before I hit Hollywood, honey.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Oh, I know what you mean, baby. Can you wait? Well,
- 3:49Speaker 2: let's decide that later, baby.
- 3:53Speaker 5: After eight months at sea, all I want to do
- 3:55Speaker 5: is look at you for a long time.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Sure, I'll hurry. Goodbye, honey.
- 4:02Speaker 7: Oh, thanks, fellas.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Thanks. Really nothing at all.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Nothing at all.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Hey, you guys, hurry up.
- 4:05Speaker 8: The buses are leaving for Hollywood. Hey, here we go, Clarence.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Oh, you beautiful, gorgeous things, you. Here we come. Now, look, Clarence.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Ever since we got to Hollywood, you've been following me.
- 4:24Speaker 5: You got a date, haven't you?
- 4:25Speaker 9: Uh-uh.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I thought you.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Uh-uh.
- 4:28Speaker 2: It's always been like this, Joe. Every time we hit port,
- 4:32Speaker 2: all I do is go to the library. So you
- 4:34Speaker 2: like books. What's the beef? Well, I thought it'd be
- 4:37Speaker 2: fun to try something different. You know, like going out
- 4:40Speaker 2: with girls. But I don't know how to begin.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Ah, don't give me that, Clarence. After all, you're from Brooklyn.
- 4:46Speaker 7: Joe, even in Brooklyn, things can go wrong.
- 4:49Speaker 10: What do you mean?
- 4:50Speaker 2: Well, right from boys' high school, I went to the cathedral, see,
- 4:53Speaker 2: and I was the assistant choir master.
- 4:56Speaker 10: Oh.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, right from there, of course, I went into the Navy.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And I wouldn't tell that to anyone but you, Joe. Well,
- 5:01Speaker 2: do you want a couple of phone numbers? Thanks, but
- 5:03Speaker 2: I'd be too scared to use them. But when you
- 5:05Speaker 2: mentioned Lola, I thought you'd let me... Lola? Hey, are
- 5:08Speaker 2: you kidding? Well, if I could go with you, I
- 5:10Speaker 2: could learn something. After all, Joe, everybody knows you're the
- 5:13Speaker 2: best wolf in the Navy.
- 5:14Speaker 7: And besides, you gotta help me.
- 5:16Speaker 2: What do you mean, I gotta help you? Well, didn't
- 5:18Speaker 2: you save my life when I fell overboard? I didn't
- 5:21Speaker 2: ask you to save my life, so now you're responsible
- 5:23Speaker 2: for me. So now I'm re... How do you like
- 5:26Speaker 2: this guy? Well, look, Joe, what's the sense in having
- 5:29Speaker 2: your life saved if you can't have any fun with it?
- 5:31Speaker 5: Well, look, if I find a dame for you and
- 5:34Speaker 5: get you started, will you call it quits?
- 5:36Speaker 7: Gee, that'd be swell, Joe.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I'm certainly... Hey, Joe. Hey, look, that police car, Joe. Well,
- 5:41Speaker 2: what about it? Joe, that cop... Hey, you say this!
- 5:45Speaker 10: Come here, you guys.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Hey, wait a minute. What's the idea?
- 5:47Speaker 11: Let's not have any unpleasantness, fellas. Now, just get in
- 5:49Speaker 11: the car.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Hey, what do we do? Look, I got a date.
- 5:51Speaker 2: We'll tell you all about it at headquarters. Well, I
- 5:58Speaker 2: found a couple of sailors, Captain. Here they are. Yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 2: what's the charge? What's the big idea? Now, take it easy, sailor.
- 6:03Speaker 2: If you've been inconvenienced, I'm sorry. But you see this
- 6:05Speaker 2: kid here? Sure I see this kid here. Well, he's
- 6:07Speaker 2: run away from home. He won't tell us who he
- 6:09Speaker 2: is or where he lives. I'm going nuts. Well, what
- 6:11Speaker 2: will he tell you? That he ran away to join
- 6:13Speaker 2: the Navy.
- 6:13Speaker 10: Oh.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Oh, I see.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Hi, Admiral.
- 6:17Speaker 8: Hi, sailor.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So you want to join the Navy, huh?
- 6:20Speaker 10: Aye, aye, sir.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Attention!
- 6:24Speaker 5: State your name and rank.
- 6:25Speaker 8: Donald Martin, sir.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Boy. Where do you live?
- 6:29Speaker 8: 1515 Foothill Road.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Hey, just like Daddy tells him. He wouldn't tell us nothing. Well, look, uh, mate,
- 6:35Speaker 2: it's like this.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Before they'll take you in the Navy, you gotta have
- 6:38Speaker 5: a letter from your mother or father saying it's okay, see?
- 6:41Speaker 8: But I don't have a mother or father anymore.
- 6:43Speaker 10: Oh.
- 6:44Speaker 8: You think a letter from my Aunt Susie would be okay?
- 6:46Speaker 5: Well, sure.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Why not? Okay, McGinley. Drive them all over to the
- 6:49Speaker 2: kids' house. Oh, no. Nothing doing.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Oh, we don't mind, Joe.
- 6:52Speaker 2: It'll take you five minutes.
- 6:53Speaker 7: No, no.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I can't. I gotta... Look, what am I gonna do
- 6:56Speaker 2: about Lola? She's waiting for... Well, look, are you sure
- 6:59Speaker 2: it'll only take five minutes? Maybe less even. Come on, kid.
- 7:01Speaker 7: Here we go.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Okay, Donald, what goes? I thought you said your Aunt
- 7:11Speaker 5: Susie was here.
- 7:12Speaker 8: She lives here, but she went out tonight.
- 7:14Speaker 7: And left a nice little kid like you all alone.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Oh, but Mrs.
- 7:18Speaker 8: Murphy was here. See, she left a note.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Give me that.
- 7:21Speaker 5: Dear Miss Abbott, Donald was a very good boy. He's
- 7:24Speaker 5: fast asleep, so I went home. Mrs.
- 7:27Speaker 11: Murphy.
- 7:28Speaker 8: She only thought he was fast asleep.
- 7:29Speaker 7: Yeah. Fellas, I don't want you to get the wrong idea.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I don't want you to think I'd walk out on you, but... Hey,
- 7:35Speaker 2: where you going? I'm leaving. I got a date with
- 7:38Speaker 2: a girl.
- 7:38Speaker 10: Wow.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Well, that's just great. What do you think I got
- 7:41Speaker 2: a date with, a duck? Well, anyway, you want to
- 7:45Speaker 2: talk to her aunt, don't you? Thanks, fellas. Say, if
- 7:47Speaker 2: he can blow, I can blow. Now, Joe, now, wait
- 7:50Speaker 2: a minute, Joe. You can't leave me here. What about
- 7:52Speaker 2: my being a wolf? You promised me.
- 7:54Speaker 8: And you both promised me. You talked to Aunt Susie.
- 7:56Speaker 8: If you don't help me, what'll I do?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Oh, pipe down a minute, will you?
- 8:00Speaker 8: What are you so worried about?
- 8:03Speaker 5: Oh, things, sailor, things. You'll understand when you get older.
- 8:07Speaker 2: They used to say that to me, too, Donald.
- 8:09Speaker 8: Well, did you understand when you got older?
- 8:11Speaker 7: Nope.
- 8:13Speaker 2: That Aunt Susie. What can an old lady be doing
- 8:15Speaker 2: out this time of night?
- 8:17Speaker 10: Hey, Joe.
- 8:18Speaker 12: Psst.
- 8:19Speaker 2: There she is.
- 8:19Speaker 8: Hi, Aunt Susie.
- 8:21Speaker 7: Hey, Joe.
- 8:22Speaker 2: That ain't an old lady. That's a young lady. Well,
- 8:27Speaker 2: what got you home so early? A feet give out? What?
- 8:30Speaker 10: And just who are you?
- 8:31Speaker 5: Leaving this little kid all alone while you're out having
- 8:33Speaker 5: a big time.
- 8:34Speaker 10: Would you mind telling me what you're doing here?
- 8:36Speaker 5: Oh, sure. We're a couple of guys the police called
- 8:39Speaker 5: in when they found this kid wandering around the boulevard.
- 8:41Speaker 10: Donald?
- 8:43Speaker 2: Just a moment. Don't apologize to us. Don't apologize. Come on, Clarence.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Well.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Well, goodbye.
- 8:48Speaker 8: Joe, but you promised me. Joe, you promised.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Hey, Joe, the kid's crying.
- 8:54Speaker 10: Wait a minute, please. Give me a chance to explain.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Okay, you're very sorry, but my pal and I have
- 8:58Speaker 5: got plans, see?
- 8:59Speaker 2: We'd like to get going.
- 9:00Speaker 7: Oh, I haven't got a thing to do.
- 9:02Speaker 10: Well, I just thought if you could stay for a
- 9:04Speaker 10: little while. You see, Donald's so upset.
- 9:06Speaker 5: And I.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Well, I... Oh, now, wait a minute, Donald.
- 9:09Speaker 7: What is this?
- 9:11Speaker 8: But you promised me, Joe, a letter. Joe, don't go.
- 9:14Speaker 8: Don't go.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Oh, look at him, Joe.
- 9:16Speaker 2: He's hugging you.
- 9:17Speaker 10: What letter?
- 9:18Speaker 5: Well, uh, the kid wanted to join the Navy, see,
- 9:21Speaker 5: and I told him about needing a letter from his folks.
- 9:24Speaker 8: And if you give it to me now, Aunt Susie,
- 9:26Speaker 8: I can leave with Joe. Can't I, Joe?
- 9:29Speaker 5: Well, uh, well, uh, sure, but, uh, well, there's a
- 9:32Speaker 5: couple of things besides a letter, like, uh, well, like, uh,
- 9:35Speaker 5: can you, can you read and write?
- 9:37Speaker 2: Ah, you can't read and write. You think the Navy
- 9:40Speaker 2: takes dopes?
- 9:41Speaker 8: Not ever?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Well, uh, maybe sometimes, huh, Clarence?
- 9:47Speaker 7: Yeah, but even dopes have to read and write.
- 9:49Speaker 8: What'll I do?
- 9:50Speaker 5: Well, the first thing you gotta do is study real hard.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Before you know it, you won't be a dope.
- 9:54Speaker 2: All right, Donald.
- 9:55Speaker 10: Now what about bed?
- 9:56Speaker 8: Okay, Aunt Susie, but Joe's gotta tuck me in.
- 9:59Speaker 10: Now read.
- 10:00Speaker 13: Donald.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Oh, we'd be very happy to put him to bed,
- 10:02Speaker 2: won't we, Joe?
- 10:03Speaker 10: Huh?
- 10:04Speaker 7: Joe, what's the matter, Joe? You got such a funny
- 10:06Speaker 7: look on your face. You're all purpley-like.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Okay, kid, now close those peepers and hit the sack.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Come on.
- 10:12Speaker 8: Joe, you're coming back to see me?
- 10:14Speaker 2: Promise?
- 10:14Speaker 7: Sure, I'll come back.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Sure.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Come on, Clarence, let's blow.
- 10:17Speaker 10: Wait.
- 10:18Speaker 8: I always get sun to sleep.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Look what wants to join the Navy. Okay, Clarence, you're
- 10:23Speaker 5: the choir master around here.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Sing to him.
- 10:25Speaker 7: Oh, Joe.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Go ahead, sing.
- 10:28Speaker 11: Oh.
- 10:30Speaker 7: Lullaby and good.
- 10:34Speaker 14: Night With roses bedight Bright angels around. My darling shall stand.
- 10:52Speaker 14: Lay thee down now and rest. May thy slumber be blessed.
- 11:04Speaker 7: Lay thee down.
- 11:09Speaker 14: May thy slumber be.
- 11:20Speaker 13: Blessed.
- 11:24Speaker 7: Well, he's asleep, Aunt Susie.
- 11:26Speaker 10: I don't know how to thank you. Anyway, I've made
- 11:28Speaker 10: some coffee and sandwiches.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Sorry, we've got to get going.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Goodbye, Aunt Susie, and thanks.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Thanks again.
- 11:40Speaker 7: But where are we going, Joe?
- 11:41Speaker 2: I'd better phone Lola. That looks like a bar down
- 11:43Speaker 2: the street. I'll phone from there.
- 11:44Speaker 7: Joe, wait a minute. There's something I've got to talk
- 11:46Speaker 7: to you about.
- 11:47Speaker 8: What?
- 11:47Speaker 7: About getting a girl, I mean. Joe, I've seen the
- 11:51Speaker 7: one I want.
- 11:51Speaker 2: You mean... Oh, no, Clarence, no.
- 11:54Speaker 7: Joe, remember, you promised me.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Okay, I promised you, but I didn't promise you Aunt Susie.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Now, come on, get in the cafe. I've got to phone.
- 12:05Speaker 2: But, Lola, baby, I.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Know you're tired, but... What do you mean it's for
- 12:10Speaker 5: my sake?
- 12:11Speaker 4: Huh?
- 12:12Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 12:14Speaker 5: No, no, I'm not sore. I'll be by tomorrow.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Ten o'clock?
- 12:19Speaker 5: In the morning?
- 12:21Speaker 2: Well, sure, Lola, if that's what you want. All right, goodbye, baby. Gee, Joe,
- 12:31Speaker 2: that's tough. Joe, what do you want? I don't want
- 12:35Speaker 2: to keep messing up your plans, but Well, we won't
- 12:38Speaker 2: have to look for a girl for me anymore.
- 12:40Speaker 7: We've already found Aunt Susie.
- 12:41Speaker 2: No.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I'm going to find you a dame that's a dame, see?
- 12:44Speaker 5: But right now we've got to find a place to sleep.
- 12:46Speaker 5: Come on, we'll look up the nearest USO.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Hey, there's a couple of beds down there, fella. Thanks, pal.
- 12:58Speaker 2: First night's sleep for you guys?
- 12:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Well, what do you say? Do you want to talk? Oh, sure.
- 13:01Speaker 7: We got in a little trouble, didn't we, Joe? We
- 13:03Speaker 7: picked up a little kid, see?
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. And what a little kid that was.
- 13:07Speaker 15: Huh?
- 13:08Speaker 5: And what another little kid that she had waiting for
- 13:10Speaker 5: us when we got home. Such trouble we should run
- 13:13Speaker 5: into every night of our life, huh, Clarence? I tell you,
- 13:17Speaker 5: never have I seen such dames. Now, take this blonde.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Not that there was anything wrong with that redhead of yours, huh, Clarence?
- 13:24Speaker 7: Oh, no, no.
- 13:24Speaker 2: She was rather interesting.
- 13:26Speaker 9: Interesting?
- 13:28Speaker 2: You guys should.
- 13:28Speaker 5: You should have seen this kid work.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Well, come on, sailor, give.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Well, we take the dames home, see?
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you took the dames home. A little slow
- 13:37Speaker 2: at first, a little slow, but... Well, anyway, I asked
- 13:40Speaker 2: my girl for a kiss.
- 13:41Speaker 1: You did?
- 13:42Speaker 2: And she says no. Well, who won? You were these dames.
- 13:45Speaker 2: What happened?
- 13:46Speaker 5: Well, I'll tell you.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I begged her.
- 13:53Speaker 7: That's only the way.
- 13:53Speaker 2: He started it. pleaded.
- 13:59Speaker 7: You should have seen this boy operate.
- 14:01Speaker 9: I told her, baby, come out of your shell. I
- 14:07Speaker 9: told her, maybe you'll find that it's swell.
- 14:11Speaker 2: What technique, huh?
- 14:15Speaker 7: I argued.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Never saw such a stubborn dame in my life. I threatened.
- 14:22Speaker 7: This kid's got muscles, too.
- 14:23Speaker 15: I I said you can't send me home not like this.
- 14:30Speaker 15: And I finally got that kiss.
- 14:34Speaker 2: You tell him, Brooklyn. Tell him how it happened. She
- 14:39Speaker 2: begged me. It's true.
- 14:42Speaker 5: Oh, true, true.
- 14:43Speaker 12: She pleaded.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Cut down on offending me to him.
- 14:48Speaker 7: She told me, baby. Come on out of your shell.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Ah, this boy was sensational. She told me maybe you'll
- 14:56Speaker 2: find that it's swell. Tell them, Rook, let's tell them.
- 14:59Speaker 7: I'm telling them.
- 15:00Speaker 2: She argued. They fought like wild cats.
- 15:05Speaker 7: Then she.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Threatened.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Practically threw a gun on the boy.
- 15:11Speaker 2: She said you can't go away.
- 15:16Speaker 7: Not like this.
- 15:18Speaker 16: What happened?
- 15:19Speaker 2: Then she finally got hurt.
- 15:37Speaker 3: In just a moment, our stars will return with Anchors Away.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Why are you looking in the mirror, Libby?
- 15:43Speaker 17: Oh, I'm wondering if I'm getting old. Here's Peggy Ann Garner,
- 15:46Speaker 17: who was practically a child yesterday, having her first screen
- 15:49Speaker 17: romance in Thunder in the Valley.
- 15:51Speaker 3: That's quite a leap. Who's the lucky man?
- 15:53Speaker 17: A 20th century fox chose Lon McAllister. Oh, it's a
- 15:57Speaker 17: very touching love story with Peggy Ann and Lon playing
- 16:00Speaker 17: the part of children of simple Scottish shepherds. And there's
- 16:03Speaker 17: a dog in it who really rings your heart.
- 16:06Speaker 3: How does Peggy like growing up?
- 16:07Speaker 17: Well, she says the hardest part of Thunder in the
- 16:09Speaker 17: Valley was making her first love scenes for the screen.
- 16:12Speaker 17: But in real life, she loves being grown up enough
- 16:15Speaker 17: to wear the new look.
- 16:16Speaker 3: And graduate from bobby socks to nylons?
- 16:18Speaker 17: That's right. She still gets a kick out of dressing
- 16:21Speaker 17: for a date in a long dress and beautifully sheer nylons.
- 16:24Speaker 3: I hope she knows how to take care of her nylons.
- 16:26Speaker 17: Well, of course. She follows the example of the studio
- 16:29Speaker 17: and always uses Lux.
- 16:31Speaker 3: A very sound idea, seeing that Lux flakes make nylons
- 16:34Speaker 3: last twice as long. Scientific strain test proved that.
- 16:37Speaker 17: Oh, Peggy Ann is a Lux fan. And no smart
- 16:40Speaker 17: girl would ever let her nylons be washed with a
- 16:43Speaker 17: strong soap or rubbed with cake soap. She knows those
- 16:46Speaker 17: things make runs come quickly.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Just what our strain tests showed. Stockings washed with Lux
- 16:52Speaker 3: lasted twice as long.
- 16:54Speaker 17: Well, the young fry liked that idea. It's just like
- 16:57Speaker 17: getting an extra pair of nylons every time they buy
- 17:00Speaker 17: a pair.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Let's suggest this New Year's resolution to all the women
- 17:03Speaker 3: in our audience. For longer wear, give nylons nightly Lux care.
- 17:09Speaker 3: We return you now to William Keeley.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Act two of Anchors Away, starring Frank Sinatra as Clarence Doolittle,
- 17:16Speaker 4: Catherine Grayson as Susan, and Gene.
- 17:18Speaker 7: Kelly as Joe.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Well, it's the following day, and has Joe Brady at
- 17:33Speaker 4: long last had his date with Lola? Well, what do
- 17:36Speaker 4: you think, with Clarence around?
- 17:38Speaker 2: But, Joe, I had to let you sleep, Joe. You
- 17:41Speaker 2: looked so peaceful there in bed. And besides, you needed
- 17:44Speaker 2: to rest badly, didn't you, Joe? Like I need a
- 17:46Speaker 2: hole in the head.
- 17:47Speaker 5: When I did wake up, when I phoned Lola, you
- 17:49Speaker 5: know what she told me to do?
- 17:50Speaker 7: Well, do you?
- 17:51Speaker 2: Now, Joe, no rough stuff now, Joe. Joe, lay off,
- 17:54Speaker 2: will you, Joe?
- 17:56Speaker 4: Now, late in the afternoon, and much against his better judgment,
- 18:00Speaker 4: Joe has allowed Clarence to talk him into calling on
- 18:04Speaker 4: Donald and Aunt Susan.
- 18:06Speaker 10: Oh, what a nice surprise.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Well, we promised Donald we'd come back, and Clarence here
- 18:11Speaker 5: bought him some toys.
- 18:12Speaker 10: Oh, Mr. Doodle, how sweet of you.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Oh, that's okay.
- 18:14Speaker 7: Where is Donald?
- 18:15Speaker 10: Donald's still in school. Won't you sit down?
- 18:17Speaker 5: Say, speaking of Donald, aren't you a little young to
- 18:20Speaker 5: be bringing.
- 18:21Speaker 7: Up a kid?
- 18:22Speaker 10: Well, I'm all the family he has. I know it's
- 18:24Speaker 10: hard on Donald. I mean, I never know when the
- 18:27Speaker 10: studios are going to call me, like last night.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Oh, you were working last night? I thought you were
- 18:33Speaker 5: out on a date. Oh, an actress, huh?
- 18:36Speaker 2: What do you know?
- 18:37Speaker 7: Yeah, she wears movies.
- 18:39Speaker 10: Well, I'm not really an actress. Just an extra. What
- 18:44Speaker 10: I really want to do is sing.
- 18:46Speaker 7: Well, why don't you?
- 18:47Speaker 10: Oh, that's easy to say. Oh, well, there's always a
- 18:50Speaker 10: chance that someone will hear me. There's some really great
- 18:53Speaker 10: musicians at the studios. Stokowski and Jose Iturbi.
- 18:56Speaker 7: Iturbi, huh?
- 18:57Speaker 10: Mm-hmm. And then whenever I can sing, I sing in
- 19:00Speaker 10: a little Mexican cafe. As a matter of fact, I'm
- 19:03Speaker 10: singing there tonight. So if you'll excuse me, I'd better
- 19:06Speaker 10: run up and change.
- 19:07Speaker 5: Well, if you want somebody to hear you sing, here's
- 19:08Speaker 5: your boy right here, Clarence.
- 19:10Speaker 2: What?
- 19:11Speaker 10: Clarence?
- 19:11Speaker 2: Well, sure. He used to be the assistant.
- 19:13Speaker 7: Now, wait a minute, Joe. Careful. Remember what you promised me.
- 19:16Speaker 5: Well, anyway, you know that fellow you mentioned before, a turby? Well,
- 19:19Speaker 5: Clarence and a turby are just like this.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Pals.
- 19:23Speaker 7: No, Joe, please, Joe.
- 19:24Speaker 5: Well, why not tell her? Look, Aunt Susan, while you
- 19:28Speaker 5: change your dress, Clarence will call up a turby and
- 19:30Speaker 5: arrange for him to hear you sing.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Oh, Clarence.
- 19:32Speaker 10: Do you really mean that?
- 19:33Speaker 2: Certainly he means it. Don't you, Clarence?
- 19:36Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I guess I do, yeah.
- 19:38Speaker 10: Oh, how can I ever thank you, Clarence?
- 19:40Speaker 7: There, you see?
- 19:41Speaker 2: You see? She's grateful to you already. Now you get
- 19:43Speaker 2: a date with her and.
- 19:45Speaker 7: But, Joe.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Joe, I don't know it, Turby.
- 19:48Speaker 7: You lied to her, Joe.
- 19:49Speaker 2: You told me... you knew a guy named Turby in Brooklyn. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Maxie Turby's a butcher. Details.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Always worrying about details. I tell you, Clarence, it's a cinch.
- 20:06Speaker 10: Well, Clarence, did you speak to him, Mr. E.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Turby? Of course he did, and you got an audition. When?
- 20:12Speaker 10: When did he say?
- 20:12Speaker 4: When?
- 20:13Speaker 2: Go ahead, Clarence, tell her when. Um, Saturday.
- 20:16Speaker 7: Saturday morning at 11.15.
- 20:17Speaker 10: Oh, I just don't know how to thank you. It's
- 20:20Speaker 10: about the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Look, Clarence has so many things to tell you. Why
- 20:26Speaker 5: don't you two go to that Mexican place together, have dinner,
- 20:29Speaker 5: and talk it over?
- 20:30Speaker 10: Well, I think that would be a wonderful idea.
- 20:32Speaker 7: Well, Joe, you better come, too.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Oh, no, I couldn't do that. I've got a date.
- 20:37Speaker 7: Oh, Joe, you said you weren't meeting Lola till 10 o'clock.
- 20:40Speaker 10: Well, you two work it out while I call Mrs.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Murphy.
- 20:42Speaker 10: She's coming over to stay with Donald again.
- 20:44Speaker 2: What do you want to drag me along for? Because
- 20:47Speaker 2: I don't know what a turby told me on the phone. Okay, okay,
- 20:51Speaker 2: but I'm blowing early, do you understand?
- 20:52Speaker 5: Early.
- 20:53Speaker 8: Yeah, blowing early.
- 21:01Speaker 11: Senores y senores, we are very happy to have once
- 21:13Speaker 11: again Miss Susan Abbott to sing for us.
- 21:53Speaker 18: Jealousy, you constantly torture me.
- 22:00Speaker 10: I sometimes wonder if this spell that.
- 22:05Speaker 16: I'm on © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 22:12Speaker 18: © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 22:38Speaker 10: While it's charmed once again This jealousy.
- 22:47Speaker 7: That tortures me.
- 22:49Speaker 16: Is ecstasy Mysterious pain.
- 23:06Speaker 19: Your eyes.
- 23:10Speaker 16: Give the answer I'm dreaming of.
- 23:22Speaker 13: That soft word, your cruel lips will never say.
- 23:37Speaker 18: And shatter the spell in my life To make me
- 23:47Speaker 18: believe When your eyes just deceive And it's only the
- 23:55Speaker 18: tango you love.
- 24:16Speaker 16: To make me believe When your eyes just deceive And
- 24:25Speaker 16: it's only.
- 24:28Speaker 20: The tango You.
- 24:51Speaker 7: Gee, Susie, you were wonderful.
- 24:54Speaker 10: Well, thank you. Where's Joe?
- 24:57Speaker 7: Oh, Joe went to make a phone call.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Oh.
- 25:00Speaker 7: Yeah, he's a pretty busy guy.
- 25:01Speaker 10: He is?
- 25:02Speaker 7: Yeah, he's the most wonderful wolf in the whole Navy.
- 25:05Speaker 10: Well, what about you, Clarence?
- 25:07Speaker 7: Oh, I'm fine.
- 25:08Speaker 10: Well, what I mean is, what sort of work do
- 25:11Speaker 10: you do in the Navy?
- 25:12Speaker 7: Gun crew.
- 25:13Speaker 8: Hmm.
- 25:14Speaker 10: Is it interesting?
- 25:15Speaker 7: It's keen.
- 25:16Speaker 10: Well, that's nice.
- 25:18Speaker 2: And, um....
- 25:20Speaker 10: We missed you.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Oh, I'll bet you did, huh, Clarence?
- 25:22Speaker 7: Hey, Joe, try these enchiladas. They're murder.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Susita, your song was best yet.
- 25:26Speaker 10: Thank you, Pedro. Pedro, guess who I'm going to sing
- 25:29Speaker 10: for on Saturday morning? Jose E.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Turby.
- 25:32Speaker 8: Susita, excuse, please.
- 25:33Speaker 2: I tell Mama. Hey, Susi, it's only an audition. Do
- 25:36Speaker 2: you think you ought to tell people? Yeah, what if
- 25:38Speaker 2: everything didn't go just right?
- 25:40Speaker 10: Well, you've given me my opportunity, and if I fail now, well,
- 25:44Speaker 10: it's my own fault.
- 25:45Speaker 5: Uh-huh, well, say, Clarence, why don't you dance with Susan?
- 25:50Speaker 17: I'd love to, Clarence.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Thanks, but I don't know how to dance. Joe will
- 25:54Speaker 2: be glad to dance with you, Susan.
- 25:56Speaker 16: Well?
- 25:58Speaker 2: Oh, sure. Gee, look at him dancing. Joe's a wonderful dancer.
- 26:09Speaker 2: I'm such a coward. I don't know why, either. Why
- 26:15Speaker 2: do I freeze when Susie just looks at me? What
- 26:19Speaker 2: makes people act this way about people? Ah, what makes anything.
- 26:31Speaker 7: What makes the sunset? What makes the moon rise?
- 26:36Speaker 14: What makes the tide remember to hide?
- 26:39Speaker 2: And why does it soon rise?
- 26:44Speaker 7: What makes a star fall? Why does its flight.
- 26:53Speaker 14: Make us stop in the night and wish as we
- 26:58Speaker 14: all do?
- 27:01Speaker 3: And what holds.
- 27:05Speaker 21: A cloud together?
- 27:08Speaker 17: And what makes the.
- 27:24Speaker 2: What makes the moon rise?
- 27:28Speaker 19: Is it my love for you?
- 27:44Speaker 6: Gee, a person could die from such singing.
- 27:48Speaker 7: Hey, who are you?
- 27:50Speaker 10: One of the waitresses.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 27:53Speaker 7: Oh, wait a minute.
- 27:54Speaker 2: You're from Brooklyn.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:57Speaker 2: How do you know?
- 27:57Speaker 8: You too?
- 27:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Flatbush.
- 27:59Speaker 8: Cream paint.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Well, how do you like that?
- 28:03Speaker 8: You here all alone?
- 28:04Speaker 7: No, I'm with a girl. She's dancing, see?
- 28:07Speaker 8: Huh? Oh, Miss Abbott, huh?
- 28:09Speaker 6: Oh, she's a.
- 28:10Speaker 17: Swell girl, all right.
- 28:12Speaker 7: Yeah, only I don't know how to talk to her.
- 28:15Speaker 2: I can't ever talk to.
- 28:16Speaker 7: Girls at all.
- 28:17Speaker 6: Well, you're talking to me, aren't you?
- 28:19Speaker 7: Oh, it's sure different. You're from Brooklyn.
- 28:21Speaker 9: Yes.
- 28:22Speaker 8: Yeah, I know.
- 28:26Speaker 17: Excuse me, Joe.
- 28:29Speaker 10: What did you say?
- 28:30Speaker 5: I said most girls are so easy to figure out.
- 28:34Speaker 10: They are?
- 28:35Speaker 5: Yeah, but for you, you're... One time you look kind
- 28:38Speaker 5: as if you knew all the answers, and then ten
- 28:40Speaker 5: minutes later, you're like a little kid. Just when a
- 28:44Speaker 5: guy starts thinking maybe I ought to buy you an
- 28:45Speaker 5: ice cream cone or a doll or something, all of
- 28:48Speaker 5: a sudden you're grown up again.
- 28:49Speaker 15: I am?
- 28:50Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 28:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and everything gets all kind of mixed up and interesting.
- 28:56Speaker 5: I mean.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Well, I mean.
- 28:58Speaker 5: Well, that's what Clarence said about you. You know, he
- 29:00Speaker 5: thinks about you all the time.
- 29:02Speaker 10: He does? Well, who do you think about, Joe?
- 29:05Speaker 5: Well, I... Oh, I don't know, Aunt Susie. Right now,
- 29:09Speaker 5: I'm a little confused about everything.
- 29:12Speaker 2: All of a sudden, I... Let's get back to the table.
- 29:25Speaker 2: And did you hear what Aunt Susie said when we
- 29:27Speaker 2: brought her home, Joe? She said she didn't know when
- 29:29Speaker 2: she'd been so happy.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Yeah, why shouldn't she be happy with that big, beautiful
- 29:32Speaker 5: audition coming up?
- 29:34Speaker 7: Oh, Eterby.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Joe, what'll I do? Yeah, and what'll I do? When
- 29:38Speaker 5: I called Lola tonight from that Mexican joint, she hung
- 29:41Speaker 5: up on me.
- 29:41Speaker 7: Joe, look, you just gotta get to Eterby.
- 29:44Speaker 2: I don't know how, but the first thing tomorrow morning,
- 29:46Speaker 2: you gotta go to that movie studio and talk to Eterby.
- 29:50Speaker 16: Mr. Eterby's office.
- 29:58Speaker 10: Well, I'm sorry, Mr. Whitney, but Mr. Turby isn't in. Yes, yes,
- 30:01Speaker 10: I'll tell him you called. Well, then, you're Mr.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Brady.
- 30:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I wanted to see you.
- 30:05Speaker 17: If you'll sit down over there, Mr.
- 30:07Speaker 10: Turby should be here shortly.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
- 30:09Speaker 10: Strange you didn't tell me you had an appointment.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Come in. Come in.
- 30:14Speaker 10: And my name is Susan Abbott, and I have an
- 30:16Speaker 10: appointment to see Mr. E.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Cunningham. Well, hello there. Don't you ever speak to.
- 30:18Speaker 13: Sailors, lady?
- 30:19Speaker 10: Well, Joe, what are you doing here?
- 30:22Speaker 5: Clarence is off having a little chat with Jose, and
- 30:24Speaker 5: I'm waiting for him to come back. Come on, let's
- 30:25Speaker 5: go have a Coke or something.
- 30:26Speaker 7: Well, I was just.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Come on, Susan, let's go.
- 30:32Speaker 10: Joe, I don't understand.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Well, I don't understand either. What are you doing here
- 30:37Speaker 2: at the studio?
- 30:38Speaker 10: Well, I'm working here today as an extra, so I
- 30:40Speaker 10: thought I'd.
- 30:40Speaker 5: And that's where you almost made a terrible mistake. Boy,
- 30:43Speaker 5: are you lucky I was in a Turby's office to
- 30:45Speaker 5: stop you. But, Joe, why? Well, look, you go to
- 30:49Speaker 5: see Mr. Turby now. You try to talk to him, see? Well,
- 30:52Speaker 5: he's polite, but.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Very busy, and it's just no good.
- 30:55Speaker 5: But if you wait till Saturday morning, well, Turby's expecting
- 30:58Speaker 5: to see one of these big, beefy opera singers, and
- 31:01Speaker 5: you walk in, you'll look like a million dollars. Ah,
- 31:04Speaker 5: believe me, Aunt Susie, you'll kill him.
- 31:07Speaker 10: Well, yes, maybe that would be better, Joe.
- 31:10Speaker 7: Sure.
- 31:10Speaker 5: So come on, let's have that coke.
- 31:18Speaker 7: But what happened, Joe? How come you didn't see a turby?
- 31:21Speaker 5: I ran into Susie, that's how come.
- 31:23Speaker 7: You mean she.
- 31:25Speaker 2: she still thinks she's seeing him on Saturday? Now, don't worry, kiddo.
- 31:28Speaker 5: We'll get to a turby and tell him it's just
- 31:30Speaker 5: a gag and they say he's a swell fella and
- 31:33Speaker 5: Maybe you'll let her sing for him after all.
- 31:34Speaker 7: Oh, I don't know. Joe, Joe, about tonight. You'll come
- 31:39Speaker 7: with me when I go down to the cafe, won't you?
- 31:41Speaker 2: No, Clarence.
- 31:43Speaker 5: You see, well, that's Susie. Now, she's okay. You see
- 31:48Speaker 5: her alone.
- 31:53Speaker 18: For heaven's sake, look who's here.
- 31:58Speaker 7: Oh, hello, Brooklyn. Yeah, I got a date with Susie.
- 32:01Speaker 12: I'm early.
- 32:02Speaker 6: You look like you were going to a funeral. What's
- 32:04Speaker 6: the matter?
- 32:06Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to be alone with her tonight, and
- 32:09Speaker 2: I won't even know what to say.
- 32:10Speaker 7: I'm such a dope.
- 32:11Speaker 6: Oh, what's wrong with you?
- 32:13Speaker 22: Why, last night, the first note I heard you sing,
- 32:15Speaker 22: I knew you were the romantical type.
- 32:18Speaker 17: Now, look, I'm Hersey.
- 32:19Speaker 22: I'm just finishing supper. I'm sitting here toying with my
- 32:23Speaker 22: cup of java. The fellas are playing soft music.
- 32:28Speaker 17: I'm looking at you.
- 32:30Speaker 7: You're looking at me.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Gee, you're swell.
- 32:34Speaker 8: Gee, thanks.
- 32:35Speaker 6: I mean, well, that's swell for a starter. What else, Clarence?
- 32:39Speaker 7: Well, well, something like this, maybe.
- 32:43Speaker 21: The charm of you is comparable to... A Christmas tree
- 32:51Speaker 21: with toys With little girls and boys When first they see.
- 33:01Speaker 2: The tree.
- 33:04Speaker 14: The thrill of you is comparable to The thrill I
- 33:10Speaker 14: felt when I First learned a heart could sigh.
- 33:18Speaker 2: And you were the reason.
- 33:20Speaker 12: Why And yet, and yet ©.
- 33:28Speaker 21: BF-WATCH TV 2021 Is all that I can do Because
- 34:01Speaker 21: they add up to.
- 34:05Speaker 12: The charm of you.
- 34:17Speaker 22: Gee, I'd give a month's tips to have somebody sing
- 34:21Speaker 22: to me like that.
- 34:23Speaker 7: Somebody will, Brooklyn. You wait and see. You're a wonderful girl.
- 34:27Speaker 6: Oh, go on. Hey, here she comes, Miss Abbott.
- 34:30Speaker 10: I better get to work.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Hello, Clarence.
- 34:33Speaker 7: Oh, hello, Susan.
- 34:34Speaker 10: Oh, I hope I haven't kept you waiting.
- 34:35Speaker 16: Uh-uh.
- 34:37Speaker 10: Did you have a nice time today with Mr. E.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Turby?
- 34:41Speaker 10: I saw Joe at the studio, you know, and he
- 34:43Speaker 10: said that you and Mr. E. Turby.
- 34:45Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, yeah, Susan. Yeah, I remember. Look, Susan, there's
- 34:48Speaker 7: something I've got to tell you.
- 34:50Speaker 2: It might make a great difference in the way you
- 34:52Speaker 2: feel about seeing me, even, but I've got to tell you.
- 34:55Speaker 10: Oh, please, please don't tell me now, Clarence. I like
- 34:59Speaker 10: you very much, but, well, we haven't known each other
- 35:02Speaker 10: very long, and, well, sometimes it's a mistake to say
- 35:05Speaker 10: things too soon.
- 35:07Speaker 7: You think so?
- 35:08Speaker 10: Oh, yes, I do.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Well, now I feel better. I was afraid to.
- 35:12Speaker 7: Tell you anyway.
- 35:14Speaker 10: By the way, where is Joe tonight?
- 35:17Speaker 2: Oh, Joe probably has a date with Lola. He's crazy
- 35:19Speaker 2: about her.
- 35:20Speaker 10: Oh, I see.
- 35:23Speaker 2: I mean, she's crazy about him, and he doesn't seem
- 35:25Speaker 2: to mind it at all.
- 35:26Speaker 10: Well, anyway, Clarence, I can't begin to tell you how
- 35:30Speaker 10: grateful I am.
- 35:32Speaker 7: Oh, gee, Aunt Susan. It's really nothing.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Why, I... Ow!
- 35:37Speaker 10: Oh, it's all my fault.
- 35:38Speaker 6: I didn't watch where I was going. Oh, Clarence, just look.
- 35:44Speaker 6: You're all over soup.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Oh, that's all right, Brooklyn. You hardly touched me.
- 35:49Speaker 6: You want to come out in the kitchen? A couple
- 35:51Speaker 6: of minutes next to that oven and you'll be dry.
- 35:53Speaker 10: I think you'd better, Clarence. It's all right. I'll wait
- 35:56Speaker 10: for you. Are you getting.
- 36:05Speaker 6: Dried out, Clarence?
- 36:07Speaker 7: Oh, yeah. I'm doing fine.
- 36:09Speaker 6: There's a noodle in your hair.
- 36:11Speaker 5: Oh.
- 36:12Speaker 6: I'll get it for you.
- 36:13Speaker 8: Gee, thanks.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Thanks. You know, I wish I could stay here and
- 36:17Speaker 2: talk to you.
- 36:18Speaker 17: You do?
- 36:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you know something, Brooklyn? With you around, well, I
- 36:23Speaker 2: feel like I was home again in Flatbush.
- 36:26Speaker 8: Gee, thanks.
- 36:27Speaker 7: You're welcome. And that's not all. The more I look at.
- 36:31Speaker 16: You, Brooklyn....
- 36:37Speaker 5: Hiya, Clarence.
- 36:39Speaker 7: Hey, Joe. I thought you had a date with Lola.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Where's Susan?
- 36:43Speaker 7: She went to phone. She's checking up on Donald.
- 36:45Speaker 2: I've been waiting to get you alone. You having fun?
- 36:47Speaker 1: Sure.
- 36:48Speaker 2: All you needed was a girl.
- 36:50Speaker 5: Look, kid, I've been scouting around. I meet about a turby,
- 36:52Speaker 5: and I found out he's rehearsing his orchestra tomorrow morning
- 36:54Speaker 5: in the Hollywood Bowl. We'll nail him there for sure,
- 36:57Speaker 5: so don't worry. Everything's going to be okay with you
- 36:59Speaker 5: and Susan.
- 37:00Speaker 7: Yeah, but, Joe, I don't want to.
- 37:01Speaker 5: Relax, kid, relax.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Just bring her along till we see what happens in the.
- 37:13Speaker 7: Ah, it's no use, Joe.
- 37:15Speaker 2: It turbies in the bowl and we're here in the street.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Guards at every entrance. Even you can be licked, Joe.
- 37:21Speaker 2: We just got to tell Susie the truth, that's all. Okay.
- 37:24Speaker 5: Well, she's working at the studio today.
- 37:26Speaker 2: I'll try to find her.
- 37:26Speaker 7: No, wait a minute, Joe.
- 37:28Speaker 2: It's time it's up to me to do it.
- 37:29Speaker 5: No, no, I'll tell her. She'll be good and sore,
- 37:31Speaker 5: but she'll be sore at me, right? I'll tell her
- 37:33Speaker 5: how it all happened just because you were crazy about her.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Well, what's the use? We're due back in San Pedro
- 37:39Speaker 2: tomorrow and our leave is practically over.
- 37:41Speaker 9: Okay.
- 37:41Speaker 5: Clarence, Susie's not a girl just for a leave. She's
- 37:45Speaker 5: a kind you come home to, and this'll do it.
- 37:49Speaker 7: Joe.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Yeah? There's something I've been wanting to tell you.
- 37:54Speaker 10: What?
- 37:56Speaker 7: Ah, never mind.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I guess you're right.
- 37:58Speaker 5: Okay, I'll meet you at that little bar near Susie's
- 38:00Speaker 5: house about 6 o'clock.
- 38:01Speaker 7: Yeah, sure. Okay, Joe.
- 38:03Speaker 10: Okay.
- 38:11Speaker 6: Clarence, what are you doing here in the middle of
- 38:12Speaker 6: the afternoon?
- 38:14Speaker 7: I don't know, Brooklyn.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Except that I left Joe about three hours ago and
- 38:18Speaker 2: I started walking and, well, here I am. That's not
- 38:22Speaker 2: the truth.
- 38:23Speaker 7: I do know why I'm here. Brooklyn, I love you.
- 38:26Speaker 17: Oh, no, Clarence.
- 38:30Speaker 6: No, you love Susan.
- 38:32Speaker 7: I did, but I don't. I mean, I know it's awful,
- 38:35Speaker 7: but I can't help it. I love you.
- 38:39Speaker 6: I don't think it's so awful, Clarence.
- 38:41Speaker 7: Well, yes, it is. It means that... Well, it means
- 38:44Speaker 7: that I'm fickle. But say you'll marry me, Brooklyn. Please
- 38:49Speaker 7: say you'll... Oh, no.
- 38:52Speaker 14: No.
- 38:53Speaker 8: Clarence, what's the matter?
- 38:54Speaker 2: Well, I've been in such a daze about you, I forgot. What?
- 38:58Speaker 7: That Joe is seeing her now.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Joe is.
- 39:00Speaker 7: Joe, he's making me out a big guy, so she'll
- 39:02Speaker 7: like me. Susan, I mean.
- 39:04Speaker 2: And I don't want her.
- 39:04Speaker 7: To like me. Oh, every time I leave that guy,
- 39:07Speaker 7: I get in trouble.
- 39:08Speaker 12: Joe!
- 39:09Speaker 8: Hey, Joe!
- 39:12Speaker 3: We call now for station identification. This is CBS, the
- 39:23Speaker 3: Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 39:25Speaker 16: Our stars will return with anchors away in just a moment.
- 39:50Speaker 4: We're delighted to have as our guest this evening one
- 39:53Speaker 4: of Hollywood's more talented young actresses, Miss Mona Barry. Mona
- 39:57Speaker 4: just finished playing in the screen version of Sinclair Lewis's
- 40:00Speaker 4: famous novel, Cast Timberlane.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Right, Mona? Right, Mr. Keeley, and I was very grateful
- 40:06Speaker 2: for that part.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Well, you're surrounded by a fine cast, Mona, with Spencer
- 40:10Speaker 4: Tracy in the title role.
- 40:12Speaker 13: And Lana Turner as the woman he loves.
- 40:14Speaker 2: As indeed, a dynamic combination.
- 40:16Speaker 13: Then there's Zachary Scott in that suave, menacing type of
- 40:19Speaker 13: role he does so well.
- 40:20Speaker 4: Great stars and a powerfully emotional love story. Brought to
- 40:24Speaker 4: life by that fine director, George Sidney, who, incidentally, also
- 40:29Speaker 4: directed the picture we're presenting here tonight.
- 40:32Speaker 2: You know, Mr.
- 40:32Speaker 4: Keeley.
- 40:33Speaker 13: Lana Turner is becoming so versatile, I expect any day
- 40:36Speaker 13: that big league baseball is going to make her an offer.
- 40:39Speaker 4: You mean after that sandlot baseball sequence in the picture?
- 40:42Speaker 10: Yes.
- 40:43Speaker 2: You should have seen her practicing. She had plenty of falls,
- 40:46Speaker 2: but that didn't stop her.
- 40:48Speaker 13: I felt sorry, though, for the wardrobe department having to
- 40:50Speaker 13: freshen her tomboy shorts and shirts so often.
- 40:52Speaker 2: John Kennedy can tell you why you needn't have worried.
- 40:56Speaker 3: That's right, Mr.
- 40:57Speaker 10: Keeley.
- 40:57Speaker 3: At Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where they filmed Cass Timberlane... They use Luxe
- 41:01Speaker 3: flakes for everything washable, as they do at other leading
- 41:04Speaker 3: Hollywood studios.
- 41:05Speaker 13: Well, I should have known when I saw how wonderful
- 41:07Speaker 13: they looked every time. After all, I'm a Luxe fan myself.
- 41:11Speaker 3: With the studios, Luxe care is a matter of saving
- 41:14Speaker 3: dollars and cents.
- 41:15Speaker 2: It's so safe for colors.
- 41:17Speaker 3: Keeps them new-looking up to three times as long.
- 41:19Speaker 2: That's really true?
- 41:20Speaker 3: Proved true by actual washing tests. When colors were washed
- 41:23Speaker 3: the wrong way, they soon looked faded and old. That's
- 41:27Speaker 3: what strong soap, hot water, and rough handling can do.
- 41:31Speaker 3: But when the laboratory took identical fabrics and washed them
- 41:33Speaker 3: the luxe way, they stayed color fresh up to three
- 41:37Speaker 3: times as long.
- 41:38Speaker 2: And what girl doesn't.
- 41:38Speaker 10: Appreciate that nice as new luxe look these days?
- 41:41Speaker 3: Right you are. Keeping nice washables new looking up to
- 41:44Speaker 3: three times as long is a fine thing for the budget.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Thank you for coming tonight, Miss Mona Barry. Back now
- 41:50Speaker 3: to our producer, William Keeley.
- 41:52Speaker 4: Act three of Anchors Away, starring Frank Sinatra as Clarence,
- 41:56Speaker 4: Catherine Grayson as Susan, and Gene.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Kelly as Joe.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Poor Clarence Doolittle.
- 42:12Speaker 4: He's so in love with the waitress from Brooklyn, he
- 42:15Speaker 4: forgot all about the fact that Joe's been patiently waiting
- 42:18Speaker 4: at the picture studio to see Susan, to tell her
- 42:21Speaker 4: the truth about the make-believe audition and shoulder all the blame.
- 42:25Speaker 4: But there's one fact Clarence couldn't possibly know. Joe Brady's
- 42:29Speaker 4: fallen quite hopelessly in love himself with Susan.
- 42:35Speaker 10: Why, Joe, I didn't know you were here.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Hello, Susan. Are they through shooting? Can I talk to you?
- 42:40Speaker 8: Well, what would you.
- 42:41Speaker 10: Like to say, Joe?
- 42:42Speaker 11: Well, I.
- 42:44Speaker 10: Oh, well, perhaps I can tell you. Clarence is a
- 42:47Speaker 10: very fine boy. Oh, I know that. You saved his life,
- 42:50Speaker 10: so you owe him something, and you've decided that he's
- 42:53Speaker 10: just about right for me. Does that about cover it?
- 42:56Speaker 2: No. No, that doesn't come anywhere near it. Oh, yes.
- 43:00Speaker 10: And you, well, you like a very definite type of girl,
- 43:03Speaker 10: and I'm very definitely not it.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Oh, don't be mad, Aunt Susie.
- 43:07Speaker 10: I'm sorry. What is it, Joe?
- 43:10Speaker 5: Well, Susie, what I've got to tell you... Well, it's
- 43:13Speaker 5: not very easy, but... Oh, the same thing happens every
- 43:16Speaker 5: time I'm with you. I hear myself saying words that
- 43:20Speaker 5: never have anything to do with the things I really
- 43:22Speaker 5: feel about you.
- 43:23Speaker 10: Well, all I know are the things you say, Joe,
- 43:25Speaker 10: and I don't like them.
- 43:27Speaker 5: But I've never said what I really wanted to say because... Oh,
- 43:30Speaker 5: because my way of saying it just.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Isn't good enough.
- 43:32Speaker 10: Well, then there must be some other way.
- 43:35Speaker 5: Oh, sure.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Sure there is.
- 43:37Speaker 5: Comes right out of Romeo and Juliet and The Three
- 43:40Speaker 5: Musketeers and all that stuff they say in books and movies. Yeah, yeah, movies.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Like they're making here now. They're full of words I
- 43:48Speaker 2: want to say, but I can't.
- 43:50Speaker 10: Well, did you ever think of trying, Joe?
- 43:52Speaker 7: No.
- 43:53Speaker 2: You'd laugh at me. I'd laugh at myself.
- 43:55Speaker 5: Words like that don't go with sailor suits and four-day
- 43:59Speaker 5: leaves and the world we live in.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Well, you see that scenery over there?
- 44:03Speaker 12: Mm-hmm.
- 44:04Speaker 10: That's for the picture we're making.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:06Speaker 5: Long ago. Make-believe. That stuff. A world of cloaks and
- 44:10Speaker 5: swords and.
- 44:12Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 44:13Speaker 2: If you lived in a place like that, I could
- 44:15Speaker 2: tell you.
- 44:16Speaker 10: Oh, Joe, why don't you tell me? Please tell me.
- 44:20Speaker 10: But I.
- 44:23Speaker 2: All right, then I will. Susan, I love you.
- 44:28Speaker 23: I love you.
- 44:42Speaker 7: You're a little late, Joe. It's half past six.
- 44:44Speaker 5: I'm sorry, Clarence. Joe.
- 44:47Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 44:48Speaker 7: You were... Yeah?
- 44:50Speaker 2: You were nothing.
- 44:51Speaker 10: Clarence.
- 44:52Speaker 7: Yeah, Joe.
- 44:53Speaker 2: If I was to tell you that I.
- 44:56Speaker 2: No. It's been a hot day, hasn't it? Bartender, give
- 45:00Speaker 2: me a beer.
- 45:02Speaker 7: Joe, look, I gotta.
- 45:02Speaker 2: No, Clarence, you look.
- 45:04Speaker 5: Clarence, sometimes things happen and, well, you just can't help them, see? Well,
- 45:08Speaker 5: you meet somebody and you don't think it's anything and then, well,
- 45:11Speaker 5: all of a sudden it is something and I.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Gee, that's exactly the way it happened. Don't I know.
- 45:17Speaker 7: Yeah, it's wonderful, though.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Well, it could be, but not when you double-cross a pal.
- 45:23Speaker 2: When did you find out, Joe?
- 45:24Speaker 7: Today.
- 45:25Speaker 5: But I've had a hunch about it pretty nearly from
- 45:27Speaker 5: the beginning.
- 45:28Speaker 7: You did?
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, it's funny, I didn't. Not until I kissed her, huh?
- 45:35Speaker 2: Of course, last night when she dropped the noodle soup
- 45:37Speaker 2: on me, I should have known then.
- 45:38Speaker 10: The.
- 45:40Speaker 2: The waitress!
- 45:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:42Speaker 7: Gee, she's a terrible waitress.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Oh, no!
- 45:45Speaker 10: No!
- 45:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Joe, you mean.
- 45:47Speaker 7: You mean you're not sore on me?
- 45:48Speaker 8: Oh, no.
- 45:48Speaker 2: No, I'm not sore.
- 45:50Speaker 7: Is she sore, Susie?
- 45:51Speaker 2: Susie?
- 45:52Speaker 5: No, I wouldn't say she acted sore.
- 45:54Speaker 2: No, not at all. Even when you told her there
- 45:56Speaker 2: wasn't going to be any audition? Any aud.
- 45:58Speaker 7: No. Joe... Joe, you mean you didn't tell her?
- 46:06Speaker 5: Uh-uh.
- 46:07Speaker 7: Well, what did you tell her?
- 46:09Speaker 2: What could you be talking about all this time? Oh,
- 46:13Speaker 2: just things. Joe, you're in love with Susan yourself. Mm-hmm.
- 46:20Speaker 7: Yeah, you see?
- 46:21Speaker 2: I'm not such a dope, Joe. You're going to ask
- 46:24Speaker 2: her to marry you, aren't you, Joe? Gee, I'd sure
- 46:27Speaker 2: like to. Well, when?
- 46:29Speaker 7: Before or after she doesn't have the audition with the Terbys?
- 46:33Speaker 24: A turby.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Clarence, I gotta get to a turby. But where?
- 46:38Speaker 5: He's gotta light someplace. He's gotta have someplace he calls home.
- 46:43Speaker 13: Home.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Home, Clarence.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Home!
- 46:46Speaker 16: Come on, Clarence!
- 46:56Speaker 7: Yes, gentlemen?
- 46:57Speaker 2: Oh, good morning. Has Mr. returned? You're the same sailors
- 47:00Speaker 2: who were here last night. All night.
- 47:02Speaker 7: We slept under the tree.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Oh, I'm terribly sorry, but he gave a concert last
- 47:06Speaker 2: night in Bakersfield.
- 47:07Speaker 5: Yeah, you told us.
- 47:08Speaker 2: That was last night.
- 47:09Speaker 7: He just phoned.
- 47:10Speaker 2: He's going straight to the studio. Oh, thanks.
- 47:14Speaker 7: Gee whiz, that's awful. What are you going to do, Joe?
- 47:19Speaker 7: You know, our bus leaves at noon.
- 47:21Speaker 5: Well, I'll... I'll go straight to Susie's house and stop
- 47:24Speaker 5: her before she leaves for the audition.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Now, look, Clarence.
- 47:27Speaker 5: Don't let this spoil it for you, kid. You go
- 47:29Speaker 5: to see Brooklyn. You haven't got much time.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Well, I'll be glad to go with you, Joe.
- 47:34Speaker 5: Nah, beat it, pal. This is something I gotta handle myself.
- 47:44Speaker 8: And I've been worrying, Joe. I was afraid you wouldn't
- 47:46Speaker 8: come and see me again.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Ah, Donald, you don't think I'd go away without saying goodbye.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Joe.
- 47:52Speaker 8: If you're looking for somebody, Aunt Susie isn't home. She
- 47:55Speaker 8: went to the studio. You can see Mrs. Murphy, though.
- 48:00Speaker 5: No thanks, Donald. Look, kid, I've got to get back
- 48:04Speaker 5: to my ship. Will you tell Aunt Susie something for me?
- 48:08Speaker 5: You tell her that I tried awfully hard to make
- 48:11Speaker 5: things come out right and that I'm awfully sorry it
- 48:14Speaker 5: had to end that way.
- 48:16Speaker 2: Have you got that? Yes, sir.
- 48:18Speaker 10: Good.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Thanks, sailor.
- 48:20Speaker 10: Thanks.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Well, here you are, Susie, your coffee and donut.
- 48:28Speaker 17: Thanks, Eddie.
- 48:29Speaker 2: I wouldn't have kept you waiting, but seeing who you
- 48:31Speaker 2: were just talking to... Boy, Hosea Turby!
- 48:34Speaker 10: Oh, and I'm the biggest fool you ever saw.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Hey, now, wait a minute.
- 48:38Speaker 10: Sure I was talking to him, Eddie.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Didn't you hear me?
- 48:42Speaker 10: Good morning, Mr. E.
- 48:43Speaker 8: Turby.
- 48:43Speaker 10: I'm so excited. Imagine running into you here in the cafeteria.
- 48:46Speaker 12: Huh?
- 48:47Speaker 2: Susie, what is this? What is it?
- 48:50Speaker 10: It's just the joke of the month. Oh, I was
- 48:52Speaker 10: foolish enough to believe in someone... I thought he was
- 48:56Speaker 10: my friend. He told me he'd arranged it all with Mr. E.
- 48:59Speaker 8: Turby.
- 49:01Speaker 5: You mean you were going to sing for a Turby
- 49:02Speaker 5: and everybody knew about it but a Turby?
- 49:06Speaker 10: Oh, I'm sorry, Eddie. I just can't help it.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Oh, Eddie?
- 49:10Speaker 10: Eddie, do you know a girl named Abbott? Susan Abbott?
- 49:13Speaker 5: That's her right there, Miss Green, and she ain't feeling
- 49:15Speaker 5: so hot.
- 49:15Speaker 10: Well, maybe I can make her feel better. Miss Abbott,
- 49:18Speaker 10: I'm Mr. Turby's secretary.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Remember?
- 49:20Speaker 10: Oh, yes, I do, and I promise I won't ever
- 49:24Speaker 10: bother him again. You see, I didn't know... He didn't
- 49:27Speaker 10: know either, Miss Abbott, but he knows now.
- 49:29Speaker 17: You thought you had an audition for 11.15 this morning,
- 49:31Speaker 17: didn't you?
- 49:32Speaker 10: Yes, I made a terrible mistake. Well, Mr. Turby thinks
- 49:35Speaker 10: a screen test and audition would be much better. He what? Well,
- 49:39Speaker 10: I would have come sooner, but I've been busy phoning
- 49:41Speaker 10: wardrobe and makeup.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Here.
- 49:42Speaker 10: Here are your instructions. They're all in this paper. Stage three,
- 49:45Speaker 10: Miss Abbott, at 11.15. From the heart of a lonely
- 49:58Speaker 10: poet came a song for the girl he adored. Though
- 50:03Speaker 10: she tried very hard not to show it, she.
- 50:07Speaker 17: Was terribly, terribly bored.
- 50:15Speaker 10: But then the poet asked.
- 50:16Speaker 18: Her if she'd like to waltz, and her eyes shone,
- 50:22Speaker 18: and the moon shone, and the star.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Shone up above.
- 50:36Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 50:37Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 51:05Speaker 18: As they waltzed, though she tried not to show it,
- 51:10Speaker 18: you could see.
- 51:11Speaker 16: In her eyes a light that shone with her love
- 51:16Speaker 16: for the poet.
- 51:18Speaker 18: As they waltzed through the thrill of the night.
- 51:41Speaker 23: Miss Abbott, that was wonderful. Come to my office as
- 51:52Speaker 23: soon as you're through talking to Mr.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Eterby.
- 51:54Speaker 10: Oh, thank you very much.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Young woman, you're going to be a star. Ah, look, Joe,
- 52:05Speaker 2: just because we're off duty, what do we have to
- 52:08Speaker 2: sit here in quarters for?
- 52:09Speaker 7: All you do is sit and stare.
- 52:11Speaker 5: I'm looking at the harbor. We're shoving off tonight, aren't we?
- 52:14Speaker 5: It'll be a long time before we see land again,
- 52:16Speaker 5: won't it?
- 52:17Speaker 7: Ah, don't give me that. Why don't you write Susie
- 52:19Speaker 7: a letter, Joe?
- 52:20Speaker 2: I don't have anything to tell her.
- 52:21Speaker 7: Well, tell her you're sorry.
- 52:23Speaker 2: She knows I'm sorry. How does she know? Clarence, you
- 52:26Speaker 2: write a letter, will you? Write Brooklyn two letters. I'll
- 52:29Speaker 2: wash some socks. I'll go to sleep. I don't... Joe.
- 52:34Speaker 7: What's the matter, Jim?
- 52:35Speaker 2: The O.D.
- 52:36Speaker 18: Oh.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Oh, excuse me, sir.
- 52:37Speaker 7: I didn't see you.
- 52:37Speaker 3: Seaman Brady.
- 52:38Speaker 10: Aye, aye, sir.
- 52:39Speaker 7: Seaman Doolittle. Aye, aye, sir.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Why aren't you men on deck? Don't you know there's
- 52:41Speaker 2: a big entertainment program about to start? Don't you want
- 52:44Speaker 2: to see those Hollywood stars?
- 52:45Speaker 5: Well, we're off duty, sir, and I, well, I guess
- 52:47Speaker 5: we don't feel like being entertained.
- 52:49Speaker 2: Oh, you don't, don't you? There's a man named Derby
- 52:52Speaker 2: on board asking for you. Derby? He's asking for us?
- 52:56Speaker 2: You heard me. Aft on the quarter deck. Get going,
- 52:58Speaker 2: both of you.
- 53:03Speaker 7: He said after deck, Joe, but I wouldn't know.
- 53:05Speaker 2: A terby if I... Brooklyn!
- 53:08Speaker 10: Blackbush!
- 53:09Speaker 7: What are you doing here?
- 53:10Speaker 8: Oh, you're complaining, honey.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Brooklyn!
- 53:14Speaker 7: Joe!
- 53:15Speaker 2: Hey, Joe! Look at me!
- 53:16Speaker 7: I'm kissing her, Joe!
- 53:18Speaker 2: I'm hugging her, Joe! Hey, Joe, I'm a wolf, I'm a.
- 53:22Speaker 7: Hey, where's Joe?
- 53:23Speaker 8: See where the band is?
- 53:25Speaker 13: Well, look!
- 53:26Speaker 7: Aunt Susie.
- 53:27Speaker 6: Yeah, Aunt Susie.
- 53:29Speaker 2: All hands, attention.
- 53:30Speaker 7: All hands, attention. At ease, men.
- 53:33Speaker 20: I've been requested by our guest of honor, Mr. Atterby,
- 53:36Speaker 20: to grant a young artist permission to make her debut
- 53:38Speaker 20: right here. Therefore, I'd like to introduce the singer discovered
- 53:42Speaker 20: by the United States Navy, Miss Susie.
- 53:44Speaker 8: Aunt Susie, there's Joe. There's our Joe.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Joe. Susie.
- 53:56Speaker 20: Therefore, in about five minutes, I'd like to introduce a
- 54:00Speaker 20: young singer discovered by the.
- 54:01Speaker 6: United States Navy.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Meanwhile, I am sure the band has something to contribute.
- 54:04Speaker 18: Yes, sir.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Woo-hoo!
- 54:04Speaker 12: Woo-hoo!
- 54:04Speaker 2: Woo-hoo!
- 54:05Speaker 15: Woo-hoo!
- 54:05Speaker 8: Woo-hoo!
- 54:06Speaker 13: Woo-hoo!
- 54:06Speaker 5: Woo-hoo!
- 54:06Speaker 2: Woo-hoo!
- 54:07Speaker 16: Woo-hoo!
- 54:07Speaker 2: Woo-hoo!
- 54:07Speaker 4: Woo-hoo!
- 54:07Speaker 12: Woo-hoo!
- 54:08Speaker 10: Woo-hoo!
- 54:08Speaker 11: Woo-hoo!
- 54:08Speaker 14: Woo-hoo!
- 54:08Speaker 15: Woo-hoo!
- 54:09Speaker 10: Woo-hoo!
- 54:09Speaker 3: Woo-hoo!
- 54:09Speaker 10: Woo-hoo!
- 54:09Speaker 15: Woo-hoo!
- 54:09Speaker 3: Woo-hoo!
- 54:10Speaker 7: Woo-hoo!
- 54:10Speaker 5: Woo-hoo!
- 54:10Speaker 2: Woo-hoo!
- 54:10Speaker 13: Woo-hoo!
- 54:11Speaker 7: Woo-hoo!
- 54:11Speaker 10: Woo-hoo!
- 54:11Speaker 12: Woo-hoo!
- 54:11Speaker 10: Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo!
- 54:12Speaker 14: Woo-hoo!
- 54:12Speaker 2: Woo-hoo!
- 54:12Speaker 14: Woo-hoo!
- 54:12Speaker 4: Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo!
- 54:13Speaker 10: Woo-hoo!
- 54:13Speaker 12: Woo-hoo!
- 54:13Speaker 13: Woo-hoo!
- 54:13Speaker 3: Woo-hoo!
- 54:13Speaker 10: Woo-hoo!
- 54:13Speaker 13: Woo-hoo!
- 54:14Speaker 14: Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo!
- 54:14Speaker 9: Woo-hoo!
- 54:14Speaker 3: Woo- Our stars will return for their curtain calls in
- 54:28Speaker 3: a moment. What's that book you're reading, Libby?
- 54:30Speaker 17: Oh, a book of riddles. Let's see how smart you are, John.
- 54:33Speaker 17: Here's one. What word of five letters is never pronounced right?
- 54:38Speaker 3: You had me there.
- 54:40Speaker 17: It's wrong. W-R-O-N-G, see? Try this. Why is a bridegroom
- 54:46Speaker 17: more expensive than a bride?
- 54:48Speaker 3: Oh, I give up. What's the catch?
- 54:49Speaker 17: The bride is given away.
- 54:52Speaker 3: Oh, but it's going to cost them plenty after they're married.
- 54:54Speaker 17: Oh, not if she's a luxe bride. For instance, she'll
- 54:57Speaker 17: get three pretty slips for the price of one.
- 54:59Speaker 2: And that's no riddle, ladies.
- 55:01Speaker 3: We know by actual washing tests that slips and nightgowns
- 55:04Speaker 3: washed the luxe way stay lovely three times as long.
- 55:08Speaker 3: Identical slips washed the wrong way with a strong soap,
- 55:11Speaker 3: hot water, and rough handling look faded and old very soon.
- 55:15Speaker 17: So if you wash your undies the luxe way, it's
- 55:18Speaker 17: like getting three lovely garments for the price of one.
- 55:21Speaker 17: And that's especially important these days when our dollars have
- 55:24Speaker 17: to stretch like a rubber band.
- 55:26Speaker 3: Luxe flakes are real budget stretchers because they're such thrifty
- 55:29Speaker 3: care for all your nice things.
- 55:32Speaker 7: Here's Mr.
- 55:33Speaker 3: Keeley at the microphone.
- 55:34Speaker 4: For rounding out the year on such a happy note,
- 55:37Speaker 4: our thanks to Joe Pasternak, who produced Anchors Away, and
- 55:41Speaker 4: to the stars who brought it to our stage, Frank Sinatra,
- 55:45Speaker 4: Catherine Grayson, and Gene Kelly.
- 55:47Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 55:53Speaker 4: You've set a challenging standard for us with tonight's performance.
- 55:56Speaker 2: Well, Bill, we're very glad that you got back from
- 55:58Speaker 2: Washington in time to join us.
- 56:00Speaker 10: Yes, and what's this I hear about your making off
- 56:02Speaker 10: with the door to J. Edgar Hoover's office?
- 56:05Speaker 4: Well, we had to get a shot of that door,
- 56:07Speaker 4: so instead of carting our cameras upstairs, we just stole
- 56:11Speaker 4: the door and brought it down.
- 56:12Speaker 5: Well, that's quite something, stealing a door from under the
- 56:15Speaker 5: FBI's nose.
- 56:16Speaker 2: Actually, the FBI was most cooperative. We'll be looking forward
- 56:19Speaker 2: to seeing that picture when it's finished, Bill.
- 56:21Speaker 4: Thanks, Frank, and I'm looking forward to the film that
- 56:23Speaker 4: you and Catherine just finished for Metro-Golden-Mare, The Kissing Bandit.
- 56:28Speaker 10: Well, all I can say is that Frank's voice is
- 56:30Speaker 10: as good as ever in that picture.
- 56:31Speaker 2: For that matter, that husband you keep at home is
- 56:33Speaker 2: no slouch either.
- 56:35Speaker 4: You mean Johnny Johnston? He and Catherine make a fine duo.
- 56:40Speaker 4: As for you, Gene, we're happy to see you on
- 56:42Speaker 4: your feet again.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Yes, after all those broken legs, I'm sure Gene's fans
- 56:46Speaker 2: are anxious to know if he'll ever dance for them again. Well,
- 56:48Speaker 2: here's my answer, Frank.
- 56:49Speaker 7: Well, lay it on us, kid.
- 56:57Speaker 12: Yes, sir.
- 56:58Speaker 7: Looks like the old Kelly, Gene.
- 57:00Speaker 10: And Gene's fans will have a chance to see him
- 57:03Speaker 10: dance when MGM releases his next picture called The Pirate.
- 57:07Speaker 7: Say, speaking of pictures, Bill, what's playing here next week?
- 57:10Speaker 4: Next Monday night, to start the new year off with
- 57:13Speaker 4: flying colors, we're presenting RKO's great comedy success, The Farmer's Daughter,
- 57:20Speaker 4: with its two romantic stars, Loretta Young and Joseph Cotton.
- 57:25Speaker 4: And lovely Loretta has, I think, the most entertaining role
- 57:29Speaker 4: of her career in this gay adventure of a Swedish
- 57:32Speaker 4: housemaid grappling with love and politics.
- 57:35Speaker 7: A wonderful way of saying Happy New Year, Bill. Good night.
- 57:38Speaker 3: Good night and.
- 57:39Speaker 4: Best wishes to all three of you. Before we meet again,
- 57:47Speaker 4: the old year will have passed us by. And with it,
- 57:51Speaker 4: speed our outworn prejudices and mistakes. we stand upon the
- 57:56Speaker 4: threshold of new opportunity, the chance to strive anew for
- 58:01Speaker 4: tolerance and justice to the end that all mankind may
- 58:05Speaker 4: truthfully look forward to a happy new year.

- 58:50Speaker 3: with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, producers of the Technicolor musical Good News, starring
- 58:54Speaker 3: June Allison and Peter Lawford. Heard in our cast tonight
- 58:57Speaker 3: were Francis Robinson as Brooklyn and Johnny McGovern as Donald.
- 59:00Speaker 3: Our music was directed by Louis Silvers. And this is
- 59:03Speaker 3: your announcer, John Milton Kennedy, reminding you to join us
- 59:06Speaker 3: again next Monday night to hear The Farmer's Daughter with
- 59:08Speaker 3: Loretta Young and Joseph Cotton.
- 59:12Speaker 24: Pepsodent 1 by 3 to 1. Yes, in a recent survey,
- 59:16Speaker 24: families throughout America compared new Pepsodent toothpaste with the brands
- 59:21Speaker 24: they'd been using at home. By an overwhelming average of
- 59:24Speaker 24: 3 to 1, they preferred new Pepsodent with irium over
- 59:28Speaker 24: any other brand they tried. They said new Pepsodent toothpaste
- 59:32Speaker 24: tastes better, makes breath cleaner, makes teeth brighter. Yes, with
- 59:37Speaker 24: families who made comparison tests. Pepsodent 1 by 321.
- 59:42Speaker 3: Be sure to listen next Monday night to the Lux
- 59:47Speaker 3: Radio Theater presentation of The Farmer's Daughter with Loretta Young
