- 0:00Hour number two, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 0:02Glad you're with us. Trent Condon, Ken Miller for
- 0:04another hour. Coming up at the bottom of the
- 0:06hour, Michael Swain covers The Jayhawks of Kansas 24/7 sports.
- 0:11I beg your pardon on three media for Michael, He'll join us.
- 0:15Where is he 24/7? He used to be 24.
- 0:18Seven, he's 24/7. Yes, he is.
- 0:20We'll get to Michael Swain, bottom of the hour trends, plays
- 0:23of the day still to come, Circus sports sponsor those.
- 0:26Let's get to our buddy Dane Mazatani.
- 0:27You know where he's from, twincities.com, Saint Paul,
- 0:30Pioneer Press. He joins us as the Bears get by.
- 0:33The Vikings look like JJ when it was needed most, was able to put
- 0:38a drive together, take the lead, maybe win a football game.
- 0:42But unfortunately, the Vikings had to kick off and the Bears
- 0:44took the kick return and got themselves in field goal range.
- 0:48And of all people, Santos wins the game.
- 0:50How are you? Dane Trenton, Ken, good to speak
- 0:52with you. I'm good.
- 0:54I think I'm doing better than the Vikings are on this
- 0:57beautiful Tuesday. Yeah, it's, it's unfortunate.
- 0:59It seems like the season's slipping away right at 4:00 and
- 1:026:00. Not a lot of wiggle room.
- 1:04Here comes you've got to go to Lambeau and then to Seattle.
- 1:07Neither of those trips going to be easy at all.
- 1:09So. But it's JJ McCarthy and he's
- 1:11got to be the guy going forward. I know that there's a lot of
- 1:14upset Viking fans out there right now.
- 1:16Is that kind of the sentiment in the Twins cities that, you know,
- 1:19you have to let him play out the year and just hope that you see
- 1:22even baby steps because after all, you know, he's only had a
- 1:26handful of starts in the NFL? Yeah, I mean, I don't think
- 1:30they're going to bench JJ McCarthy at any point over the
- 1:33next couple of months because you can't like I know the backup
- 1:38quarterback syndrome. A lot of people like a kid out
- 1:40of Minnesota, Max Brosmer UDFA had a really good training camp,
- 1:45good pre season. But JJ McCarthy was supposed to
- 1:49be your future. So now you have to figure out if
- 1:52he actually can be your future. And while it might be fun and
- 1:57create some conversation that throw Max frozen are in there if
- 2:01there are some struggles, that does not answer the JJ McCarthy
- 2:03question. So it's his job the rest of the
- 2:06way barring something unforeseen.
- 2:09And I think to be frank, JJ McCarthy now has seven games to
- 2:13prove that he should unquestionably be the guy.
- 2:16Moving forward into next season might sound harsh, but if it
- 2:19continues to look how it has this season, I I really think
- 2:24there could be some difficult conversations to be had here in
- 2:27February, March and April. You know, as we look at
- 2:32McCarthy, what is the biggest issue right now?
- 2:35Is it unable to process quickly enough?
- 2:38I mean, that's one of the knocks that I've heard.
- 2:40How big of a factor is that? And when we kind of dig in a
- 2:43little bit deeper, you're watching the games, but you talk
- 2:46to scouts, you talk to people. Is it just that that he's not
- 2:48processing what's happening on the field quick enough?
- 2:52Yeah, I think there's an element to that.
- 2:53His average time to throw is among the worst in the league.
- 2:57So I don't think he's getting rid of the ball at the rate that
- 3:00he needs to. But with JJ McCarthy right now,
- 3:03it just boils down to accuracy for me.
- 3:06He's the least accurate quarterback in the league.
- 3:09Pretty much every single metric you look at, whether it's the
- 3:12basic metrics, completion percentage that's hovering right
- 3:15around 52%. That's that's that's all like I
- 3:17think league average is 65 to 70% in in the modern day.
- 3:22His on target percentage is is among the worst in the league as
- 3:25well. Behind guys like Cam Ward,
- 3:27behind guys like Dylan Gabriel. These are guys that that have
- 3:31created questions for themselves moving forward, and McCarthy
- 3:35falls into that conversation when we're just looking at his
- 3:38accuracy. So Simply put, he needs to be
- 3:40more accurate. Can we get more accurate?
- 3:43Is the question the Vikings are not going to have to ask
- 3:45themselves. He's not missing hard throws
- 3:50deep down the field. He's missing very, very basic
- 3:53level throws that most quarterbacks in the NFL should
- 3:56be able to make. Where's the fan base on Kevin
- 3:59O'Connell? Is some of the luster off
- 4:01O'Connell? Because similarly, he could do
- 4:03nothing wrong with what he's done at the quarterback
- 4:06position, but and a down year would do that or not that
- 4:09they're turning on him. But I can't believe that
- 4:13they're, you know, that they still have the same, for lack of
- 4:16a better term, love affair with their head coach as they once
- 4:18had. Yeah, that's fair.
- 4:21I think for the first time probably since he's then in
- 4:26Minnesota, he's probably starting to feel it from the
- 4:28fans a little bit. You know, this is what happens
- 4:31though, when a team loses and a fan base is kind of used to to
- 4:36finding a way. Under Kevin O'Connell, it seemed
- 4:38like in all these one score games, the Vikings would always
- 4:41end up on the right side of that razor thin margin with Kirk
- 4:46Cousins, with Sam Darnold. The only time to this point that
- 4:49it hadn't worked out is when you had Josh Dobbs and Nick Mullins.
- 4:52He had a baked an excuse because Kirk Cousins popped his
- 4:55Achilles. This is the first time that
- 4:57they've had their hand picked starter for the season.
- 5:01And I know JJ missed five games. But with JJ back where it hasn't
- 5:07looked like it's supposed to, when her cousins was playing it,
- 5:09it looked like it was supposed to.
- 5:11When Sam Darnold was playing, it looked like it was supposed to.
- 5:14It's not looking like that with JJ McCarthy and I think for
- 5:19better or worse, Kevin O'Connell is taking a brunt of that
- 5:21criticism. My pushback would be it has
- 5:24looked good in the past. What is the new denominator to
- 5:29the equation? It's the quarterback.
- 5:30So it's just the nature of the beast.
- 5:33When you're the head coach of the football team, if it's not
- 5:36going well, you're going to be the one to have to answer for
- 5:39it. Honestly, I think Kevin
- 5:41O'Connell is the least of liking problems.
- 5:43I think the quarterback play is the biggest issue at hand here.
- 5:47Another guy that had been a disappointment, Dallas Turner,
- 5:50you know, first rounder, just hasn't popped.
- 5:52He definitely popped on Sunday against the Bears. 5 pressures
- 5:55in the game, had a sack. And it sounds like coming off
- 5:58the by, they decided we're just going to use him more as a kind
- 6:01of that traditional outside guy, not going to put him in coverage
- 6:03nearly as much. Saw the rate drop down to a 17%
- 6:06now these last couple of weeks. Him in coverage makes a whole
- 6:09lot of sense and it feels like the defensive staff figured out,
- 6:13all right, let's just unleash this guy to get to the
- 6:14quarterback. Is this a sign that maybe it is
- 6:17going to click for Dallas Turner and he's not going to be a first
- 6:19round disappointment? Yeah, I think it's too early to
- 6:22call bust on Dallas Turner, just like I think it's too early to
- 6:25call bust on JJ McCarthy, as hard as I've been on him.
- 6:29But I think, yeah, there's probably something to that.
- 6:32He excels in one area of his game, rushing the passer, and
- 6:35he's a sack of the quarterback. I mean, the Vikings have tried
- 6:38to make him into a complete linebacker, complete edge rush,
- 6:41Sure, that can do kind of a little bit of everything.
- 6:44They're still going to do that if they still want him to be a
- 6:47guy who can impact the game in a lot of different ways.
- 6:50But I think what you saw on Sunday is this 22 year old kid
- 6:53is very comfortable rushing the passer and he's asked to just do
- 6:56that. He can have an impact on the
- 6:58game. Not to rain on the parade, but I
- 7:01would baked into that equation that Dallas Turner was going up
- 7:05against a backup to third string tackle Austin getting blocked by
- 7:09a tight end. So it's not like he was
- 7:11dominating Trent Williams out there there.
- 7:14There's still growth that needs to happen from this kid.
- 7:16But I think when you're looking at at growth kind of in the
- 7:20aggregate, yeah, you certainly want to see these splash plays,
- 7:23which which finally we did from Dallas Turner.
- 7:26Couple of drops that that certainly didn't help McCarthy,
- 7:30obviously, but Jefferson it is is because he because he
- 7:33seemingly always has a smile on his face type of guy, right?
- 7:36The league's best receiver, according to a lot of people.
- 7:39He's certainly in the, you know, the conversation where where's
- 7:42his head right now? Jefferson can't be enjoying this
- 7:45season. Not that he's not starting to,
- 7:48you know, wear off on some of his teammates, but how's
- 7:50Jefferson handling this? Yeah, I mean, I think the hard
- 7:54part is, you know, these guys are gladiators.
- 7:57They put the pads on every Sunday and they kind of go to a
- 7:59different part in their mind. And that competitive nature
- 8:02shows up on the field on the sideline.
- 8:05And when you have 40 cameras covering, you see genuine
- 8:10reactions in real time. And people take that body
- 8:13language or take those reactions and they kind of conflate it
- 8:17into, Oh my God, this guy is upset.
- 8:20Is Justin Jefferson happy that the offense is stagnated at
- 8:23times this year? No, but the way he's handled
- 8:26himself publicly outside of the two second reaction on the
- 8:32sideline that gets clipped and circulated on social media is
- 8:35nothing but a true leader, not just on this team, but across
- 8:40the league. A lot of people could learn from
- 8:41Justin Jefferson. The leadership he's displayed
- 8:44this season. He understands the role he has,
- 8:47signing that big contract, being named the captain, being a guy
- 8:51that is built to kind of usher along a young quarterback like
- 8:54JJ McCarthy, and he's taken that really seriously and I think
- 8:58he's taken that to heart. You see quarter, you see
- 9:01receivers throughout the league, positions throughout the league.
- 9:04When, when, when, when it gets tough.
- 9:06Some guys just blow up, Some guys just quit.
- 9:09Some guys just call out teammates to the media.
- 9:13Justin Jefferson hasn't done any of that.
- 9:15JJ McCarthy's biggest cheerleader through it all.
- 9:18Even the other day when it wasn't looking good, even amid
- 9:22the lack of production for Justin Jefferson, he stands up
- 9:25there like after every game, he says the same thing.
- 9:29We have JJ McCarthy's back, so I have no issue with how he's
- 9:34handled himself through through this struggle.
- 9:37He wants more touches, he wants more catches, he wants more
- 9:40yards, he wants more touchdowns. But I don't think we're ever
- 9:44going to see Justin Jefferson stand up there and bash anybody
- 9:46after a game. Just real quick, Trent, JJ
- 9:49McCarthy had a higher Pro Football Focus passing grade
- 9:51this past week. Ready for this list?
- 9:53Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Sam Darnold, Jared Goff, Aaron
- 9:56Rodgers, Baker Mayfield, Justin Herbert.
- 9:59That's a pretty good list. Good list.
- 10:01Yeah. Not that he was great, but.
- 10:03They did all those guys that that's not to elevate JJ in my
- 10:06mind. Not trying to.
- 10:07It shows you how crappy those guys played this week.
- 10:09Another guy that had a crappy Sunday was the special teams
- 10:13coach Matt Daniels. You see KOC, Holler and Adam on
- 10:16the sideline give up the 56 yard kick return that sets the Bears
- 10:20up for the field goal. Special teams have not been very
- 10:23special this year or very special depending on the way you
- 10:26want to use the word. Matt Daniels.
- 10:28Is he not long for this world anymore at the Vikings Special
- 10:30teams coach? I think he's fine, I really do.
- 10:35And I think, look, I get it. The biggest moment of the game,
- 10:39they didn't answer the bell. 56 yard return can't happen.
- 10:43Guys losing their land assignments cannot happen.
- 10:46We just talked to Matt Daniels today, though, and like nobody
- 10:50was more pain than him after what happened on the field.
- 10:53But if we're firing Matt Daniels, I think we're doing
- 10:55we're doing dude on the wrong things.
- 10:57Has the special teams left something to be desired?
- 11:00At times, Yeah, but if we go back and look at that unit as a
- 11:04whole, they have been one of the better units in the league by a
- 11:07lot of metrics. You have a elite kicker and Will
- 11:10Reichert. You have a what looks to be
- 11:12maybe elite returner and Miles Price.
- 11:15And I get it, it's the fickle nature of that, that side of the
- 11:19ball where it's a one play phase and you can pop a kick return
- 11:24and then be the hero or you can allow a big kick return like
- 11:27they did in a big moment and be the GOAT.
- 11:29So I don't think Matt Daniels by any means is in trouble, is
- 11:34coaching for his job. And I, like I said, I think if
- 11:38we leave this season firing Matt Daniels because heads have to
- 11:42roll, we're doing it all wrong. There is one issue on this team
- 11:45that is hurting them more than anything, and it's not special.
- 11:48Nope, and you pointed that out in your tweet over the weekend.
- 11:52It's fascinating to see some of the answers, but maybe not
- 11:54surprised because you know, everybody's got an opinion.
- 11:59In your opinion, do you think that the league that the NFL is
- 12:03going to try and get out from Vikings at Cowboys Sunday Night
- 12:07Football on the 14th of December, That'll be the third
- 12:10straight opportunity for the Cowboys course Thanksgiving then
- 12:13the following Thursday and then they're back Sunday Night
- 12:16Football if the Vikings and they got a couple of tricky ones,
- 12:19obviously it lying ahead, Packers and Seahawks.
- 12:22Do you think that the Vikings and the Cowboys will move during
- 12:24the day and they'll try and find something else?
- 12:27No chance. There's no way they would flex
- 12:30Jerry Jones out of prime time. There's no way with with with
- 12:34America's team that they would do that.
- 12:36I would be stunned. I I guess like understandably,
- 12:40like if the Vikings continue to to trend the way they do, maybe
- 12:44that would be a talking point that week.
- 12:47But this is Dallas Cowboys. I think a lot of casual football
- 12:50fans don't really care about what the records are each week.
- 12:55If they see the Cowboys are on TV, they're going to tune in
- 12:58because it's the Cowboys. This has nothing to do with the
- 13:01Vikings. I think this has everything to
- 13:02do with with the Dallas Cowboys still being a premier brand of
- 13:06football regardless of who they're playing against.
- 13:09A lot of frustration. It's a Vikings town, we
- 13:11certainly know that, But with the season starting to get away
- 13:15from them a little bit, any buzz for any of the winter sports
- 13:18teams? T Wolves, a decent start, Wild,
- 13:21a decent start. Both those teams.
- 13:24Any buzz or is it still, hey, it's all football right now?
- 13:27I think people like to kind of soak in their misery sometimes
- 13:32in Minnesota. So like, I think people are
- 13:35having a find time complaining about this Vikings crew right
- 13:39now. But I do think the Timberwolves,
- 13:42the Wild turning things around after terribly slow start.
- 13:46It'll be pretty easy to pivot once the playoffs are truly out
- 13:50of reach. Once January rolls around and
- 13:52the Vikings aren't playing in the playoffs, looks like the
- 13:55Wild are going to be relevant even amid the slow start in the
- 13:59Timberwolves. Obviously we I think we've
- 14:01talked about it before. They're they're they're a team
- 14:04on the rise obviously with Anthony Edwards and appointment
- 14:07television each week. So you know when, when, when
- 14:10football is done like kings or fans can shift over to being
- 14:14Timberwolves fans to Wild fans. But you guys know how it is.
- 14:18I think football will always be king Till till it's not.
- 14:21Ken coined that a long time ago. King Football, and it certainly
- 14:24does. One quick question.
- 14:26Speaking of football on the college side, you're a Minnesota
- 14:28grad. This coaching carousel, you
- 14:32know, Fleck has done a nice job. He's not my kind of personality.
- 14:35I don't like all the shtick, but guy wins football games.
- 14:39If he would take another job, reset the clock if you will, go
- 14:43somewhere else, would Minnesota fans be heartbroken?
- 14:47Are they? Hey, he's taking us up a tier.
- 14:49But we're waiting for maybe that next step.
- 14:51What would happen to go for fandom in general if PJ would
- 14:55move on? I think there's like a section
- 14:57of fans that would say good riddance because I don't think
- 15:02PJ Black is for everybody, but I do think that the fan base would
- 15:09end up regretting their their joy if he leaves.
- 15:14Regardless of how you feel about PJ Black, I've seen it in
- 15:18college football. I, I, I went to college when Tim
- 15:21Brewster was a goat and he had his book and he was terrible and
- 15:24the program was set back years because of him.
- 15:29So it like it can be way worse and I'm not settling for
- 15:33mediocrity. But truthfully, with the way
- 15:35college athletics has trended. Like are the, are the.
- 15:39Minnesota Golden Gopher is ever going to be a premier brand of
- 15:41football that competes with the likes of the Ohio State's, the
- 15:45Oregon's, the Penn State's, the, you know, in the Big 10.
- 15:48In terms of NIL, probably not. And while I'm not saying, you
- 15:52know, you got to just sit there and take what you have in front
- 15:56of you, you know, for every Curt Signeti in Indiana, there's like
- 16:01a dozen Luke Pickles at Wisconsin.
- 16:04So Wisconsin would kill for Paul Crist right now, just with the
- 16:07way things have gone there. So I think it's a slippery
- 16:10slope. I think people who don't like PJ
- 16:14Flack always are going to want him to leave.
- 16:16But I think if he leaves, it could get pretty ugly pretty
- 16:20quickly here in the Twin Cities. Last thing, Dane Mazatani, St.
- 16:24Paul Pioneer Press twincities.com If the season
- 16:27continues down the trajectory that it is on and seemingly it's
- 16:31more likely to happen than not, does Cassie get another
- 16:34opportunity at the draft? Where are the cons on their with
- 16:37the with their GM ownership? And the GM draft has not been
- 16:40his strong suit. Do you think that there's a
- 16:44chance that they're looking for another GM at the end of the
- 16:46year? I would be a little surprised if
- 16:52we talked about heads after all and when things don't have
- 16:55happen the way they should. I think I would be a little
- 16:58surprised still if Casey was was the scapegoat and all of this.
- 17:02I know his drafts haven't been good, but the wills have shown
- 17:05in the past to be pretty patient leadership group.
- 17:08And I think when you look at Casey, he just signed an
- 17:12extension. It obviously wasn't as lucrative
- 17:15or as long as Kevin McConnell's extension, but I think the Wills
- 17:19would be a little hesitant to to fire a guy that they just
- 17:22extended. So I'm just going off of how how
- 17:26things have operated here in the past.
- 17:28Now, if you walk into TCL Performance Center in February
- 17:33and he's gone, I wouldn't be like completely floored.
- 17:37I just think right now I, I would venture to guess Casey
- 17:41gets another shot at the draft in, in another year to kind of
- 17:45push forward in this thing. But that's totally conjecture.
- 17:48No, no reporting on my end there.
- 17:50Thanks for being so gems with your time, Dane.
- 17:53Happy Thanksgiving. Appreciate you coming on as
- 17:55always, brother. Thank you, man.
- 17:56We'll talk to you down the road. Of course.
- 17:58Anytime, guys. Yeah, thank you.
- 17:59Dane was at Donnie Saint Paul, Pioneer Press, twinstage.com.
- 18:02So we try to get the coach, the GM and the special teams coach
- 18:05jettisoned. What?
- 18:07What kind of people really want to fire KOC?
- 18:11Yeah, they shouldn't. They're they're idiots.
- 18:13Idiots. Yes, yes, yeah, those are the
- 18:15dumb percentage of our population, right?
- 18:18Come on, come and live in reality.
- 18:21Look around the league. Look at how it turns over.
- 18:24Look what happens seemingly every single year outside of a
- 18:2815 year stretch of the Patriots in a decade of the Chiefs.
- 18:32This is football, and unless you have Tom Brady or Patrick
- 18:35Mahomes, this is football in the NFLIII.
- 18:39Can't wrap my right mind around it.
- 18:40I really can't. No, I'm with you.
- 18:42Did you hear what the Vikings had to do after your Bears tried
- 18:46to troll the Vikings after the game?
- 18:48So the locker room apparently has speakers.
- 18:50OK, right. And somebody on the Bears of the
- 18:53Bears team played in a loop 9:00 to 5:00 to Dolly Parton.
- 18:58Oh that, that's a good one. For taking a shot at JJ McCarthy
- 19:03for two hours. So if they went in, they took
- 19:06the speakers out. So it can't happen again.
- 19:10It's circling the drain this year, isn't.
- 19:14It he doesn't have it. I don't think he does, Trent.
- 19:17There's one guy that was this poor accuracy wise that turn it
- 19:21around one guy. Josh.
- 19:25Josh Allen. Yeah, at least in recent
- 19:26history. Yes, that's a good one.
- 19:27Yes, in the last. Two decades, one guy that was
- 19:31able to do it. Josh Allen's also 65200 and 40
- 19:34lbs. Yeah, his running and McCarthy
- 19:38can move, but he's not that. No, we'll see.
- 19:42I mean, you're going to play them the the rest of the way.
- 19:44I'm surprised that then you didn't even flinch.
- 19:47What do you do? I mean, it's the Cowboys.
- 19:49I get it. But.
- 19:50No, it's it's not going to happen.
- 19:52I know you don't want to watch a crappy game, but what's 3 weeks?
- 19:54In a row, the Cowboys Look, I tried to make a case that they
- 19:56turned the corner last. Night.
- 19:58Yeah, you've already got a beaten kids.
- 20:00I asked if there's a chance I didn't have.
- 20:02It there's always a chance. It's the NFL.
- 20:03There's always a chance. You just don't want that crap.
- 20:06It's a Cowboys. You know this, Ken.
- 20:08Yeah, I know. But it's it's that's a bad foot.
- 20:10Well, that's, you know, they were better yesterday.
- 20:12But again, it's the Raiders. So what would you put in its
- 20:16place? Well, it's Week 15.
- 20:17What? What's the?
- 20:18Let me get Week 15 up in front of me here.
- 20:20Hang on. Here's my clicker.
- 20:22All right, I've got it. Buffalo, New England.
- 20:24Buffalo, New England. There's your answer.
- 20:26That'd be good. There's a lot of good games out.
- 20:30There, that's the premise in the AFC East, the upstart Patriots.
- 20:33There's a lot of good games. Here's another thing.
- 20:35There are two big games in the late afternoon window.
- 20:39In fact, three big games in the Lions.
- 20:41Rams huge. I don't think Fox.
- 20:44Is killing that up Seattle? That's one, though.
- 20:47And they're going to give us, they're going to force feed his
- 20:49Vikings, Cowboys. And you also have Packers,
- 20:51Broncos in that late afternoon window.
- 20:54You have three huge games in the late afternoon.
- 20:57Uh huh, the old man got something.
- 21:00It's Cowboys. It's the Cowboys I again.
- 21:03And but the early window look at Buffalo here you get to choose
- 21:07Buffalo Patriots, Detroit Rams, Packer, Bronco Colts, Seattle.
- 21:18Is there any game that are are that does that list?
- 21:22Is there anyone on that list that's not as good as Vikings,
- 21:25Cowboys? No, no.
- 21:27I mean, you could put Chargers chiefs in front of it too.
- 21:29Put Chargers chiefs in front of it.
- 21:31There are a lot better games, but there's one that involves
- 21:35the Dallas. I'm going to go on record right
- 21:37now. It's going to happen.
- 21:38It's going to happen. You're making the.
- 21:40NFL is going to come to its senses.
- 21:42It's back-to-back to back primetime game for the Cowboys
- 21:46and that doesn't include last night.
- 21:47But they love the Cowboys in primetime.
- 21:49I get it, but enough is enough. But they're not going to put
- 21:52Colt Seahawks in the place of the Cowboys.
- 21:54They're just not. Even if it's no, I agree.
- 21:56I agree. But there is that.
- 21:58Would be the one. And because there's so many late
- 22:00afternoon ones. But the Patriots are the girl
- 22:03with the curl and you get the best quarterback maybe in the
- 22:05league and Josh Allen. I don't think Packers and and
- 22:08Broncos would be it, but I'll give you the Lions and the Rams
- 22:11any day of the week. That's massive.
- 22:14Week 15. Watch for the announcement.
- 22:18All right, let me wait for the announcement.
- 22:20When does that have to be done? Well, it must be two weeks
- 22:24because the rumor this weekend was they were going to flix out
- 22:27flex out of Sunday, Thanksgiving, Sunday night.
- 22:30OK, you know we get there. Broncos, Commanders Broncos.
- 22:33Which is a whole lot of yuck. At least you have the Broncos,
- 22:36who were good. Right.
- 22:37But they were trying to flex out of that one.
- 22:40But then you have to have. What something to replace it?
- 22:43And you just ran through the list, Trent.
- 22:46There's a handful of games that are better than the.
- 22:48Week 15 there is week 13 though. I'm looking through there.
- 22:51Certainly nothing easy to put in this place, isn't there?
- 22:54No, I'm I'm just scrolling through here quickly.
- 22:58The best replacement game for Commanders Broncos would be
- 23:04Viking Seahawks. Oh my God, it Bill Steelers
- 23:08there, there's a winner, but that's CB, s s National game.
- 23:11They're not going to give that. Up, yeah.
- 23:12And then that's a component as well.
- 23:14That's a component as. Well, because your late
- 23:16afternoon window Vikings, Seahawks, that's a Fox game.
- 23:192320 Fives, Raiders, Chargers, No, No no.
- 23:22Or Bill Steelers. But that's their national
- 23:24window. But you know, when you when you
- 23:25go back to Week 15, the early window is is Bills and Patriots.
- 23:29And no one was clamoring for that game when they were
- 23:31divvying them up earlier in this year because Patriots were
- 23:34supposed to be, you know, it was going to be them and The Jets to
- 23:37finish last in the AFC East. I think that's your game.
- 23:40I think that's the game. I get the Cowboys, it's
- 23:43America's team. I don't think they are anymore.
- 23:45They're they still are, but not to the level that they were,
- 23:48right? I mean, they they they came by
- 23:51that. Honestly, I don't think that
- 23:52they do anymore. Vikings versus Cowboys, both
- 23:56teams. Neither of those teams going to
- 23:59be in the playoffs, neither of them, even if the Cowboys do get
- 24:03on a bit of a run here and then they might.
- 24:07We'll see real quick. Devon.
- 24:09And then we got to go to a break.
- 24:10We got Michael Swain. Devon, sorry to keep cut to
- 24:13shorts. You got about 15 seconds.
- 24:14Fire away. I.
- 24:16Just wanted to ask you a real quick question.
- 24:18So Dak Price got he's amazing. He wants, I think he's top five,
- 24:21but I think he's 5. Just want to get your guys take
- 24:23on it. Thanks guys.
- 24:24Thank you. Appreciate the call.
- 24:25Don't have enough time to go through him, but he's he's a
- 24:27really good. Quarter Allen Mahomes.
- 24:29Yeah, Knicks. OK, Not next.
- 24:33Caleb Williams. Look, Burroughs on the list.
- 24:37When healthy. When healthy, of course I love
- 24:40Herbert. You know how I love Herbert.
- 24:41Gross. Get back to Lamar.
- 24:44Jackson, I mean. He was terrible.
- 24:47He's OK, but Lamar Jackson? Jalen Hurts?
- 24:50No. Not top five.
- 24:52Aaron Rodgers? Too old, yes.
- 24:55Baker Mayfield? He's too hurt.
- 24:57Matthew Stafford, Yes. Brock Purdy?
- 25:00No, there's a, There's a number of them, right?
- 25:04I'm sure we're missing a couple. I'd like to see Deck and a
- 25:09competent organization. Oh, my God, look out below.
- 25:11He's fantastic. Michael Swain is next.
- 25:14Kansas, Iowa State conversation on the other side.
- 25:17Miller and Condon, glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 25:19Network. Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 25:21Iowa Sports Radio Network, 25 minutes before 2O clock off the
- 25:25bench. Coming up at that time, Lucas
- 25:27Strange, Sean Roberts, Michael Swaine joins us.
- 25:30He covers Kansas, Kansas, Duke tonight, Madison Square Garden,
- 25:34that'll be a classic. I'll get into that.
- 25:37Michael joins us, of course. He used to join us each and
- 25:39every week when he was covered in Iowa State.
- 25:40He's now in The Jayhawks B247 Sports and he joins us.
- 25:44Good to talk to you Michael, How you been?
- 25:46I'm doing great. I'm doing great.
- 25:48Good to be back all with you guys.
- 25:50Let's do football before we get into basketball because I'm
- 25:52anxious to hear about Michael Darren Peterson rather, who will
- 25:55not play tonight. And boy, we saw him last week.
- 26:00They they played really well. Who was it?
- 26:01North Carolina? I think it was North Carolina
- 26:03plays the team played so well in the first half and then just
- 26:07what happened? But we'll get to that in a
- 26:08hoops. Let's start with football.
- 26:10I guess we'll start with what what's gone wrong with this,
- 26:13with this Jayhawks group this year.
- 26:15I thought that they were one of the teams that certainly had a
- 26:17chance to be in the conversation amongst the the top of the
- 26:22conference did not happen. Can you put your finger on it at
- 26:26all, Michael? Yeah, it's just a lack of
- 26:28consistency. You know, it's a very different
- 26:30situation than last year where you looked at the team and the
- 26:34performance and you could really just pinpoint like a moment in
- 26:37each game that someone went against KU and they lost the
- 26:40game. And then in the latter half of
- 26:42the season, right, KU has the winning streak against the
- 26:44ranked team, right? They've started to play with
- 26:46their potential. Like this year, this team has
- 26:48just been so wildly inconsistent.
- 26:50There have been good moments and there have been bad.
- 26:51Moments. You can look at it from a
- 26:54defensive perspective, right, for KU and seems like different
- 26:57games, teams are having success with different things, right?
- 27:00You know, you can look at some games like Cincinnati or K State
- 27:03where teams have thrown the ball against KU with ease.
- 27:06You can look at some games like Missouri where they ran the ball
- 27:10against KU with ease. And then there are other games
- 27:13where KU defense looks really good for, you know, most of the
- 27:16game, like at Arizona. But then when it comes down to
- 27:18the crucial drive at the end of the game, you can't make a stop
- 27:22and you know it looks like a warm knife through butter.
- 27:25So that is a hard thing to win football games in the Big 12
- 27:29consistently when your defense is now putting together
- 27:31consistent performances and is having different things show up
- 27:34each week as issues. And then you look at it
- 27:36offensively, and I'd say for about the first seven games of
- 27:41the season, first 6-7 games of the season, but Jalen Daniels
- 27:46was playing like one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
- 27:48Like, he graded out like that on Pro Football Focus.
- 27:50You'll get any of the numbers. Like he was having a great start
- 27:52to the year. But still, Kay's offense was
- 27:55struggling to have consistency and especially in the
- 27:58second-half. And as the season has gone on, I
- 28:01think everything was put on Jalen.
- 28:03And if he wasn't perfect, the offense wasn't necessarily the
- 28:07offense you've seen from Kansas in recent years.
- 28:09And as that has happened later in the year, you see more
- 28:12issues. And so you can look back at the
- 28:13last couple games, KU did not score an offensive touchdown in
- 28:17the second-half against Arizona. Two weeks prior against K State,
- 28:20KU did not score an offensive touchdown the second-half.
- 28:23The week before that against Texas Tech, KU did not score an
- 28:26offensive touchdown in the second-half.
- 28:27So like, that's a big issue too, with all of a sudden your
- 28:30defense isn't consistent in your offense, can't put together a
- 28:32touchdown drive in the second-half of the game.
- 28:34Like, that's really hard to win consistently.
- 28:36And so KU has been in the spot now where they've beaten the
- 28:40teams they should. You should be West Virginia, you
- 28:42should be UCF, you should Oklahoma State.
- 28:47But then the games that are kind of toss up, games like your K
- 28:49State's, your Arizona's, those are the games KU's have lost
- 28:52this year. So that's what makes, you know,
- 28:54Saturday's game against Iowa State.
- 28:56So interesting is the fact that the trend this year has been the
- 28:58KU loses these games. Is this the time that they
- 29:00finally flip it and get on the other side and get in the one
- 29:03column? A toss up game, one that looks
- 29:06very similar to the ones that you just mentioned, Michael.
- 29:09And there's also the carrot dangling out there about bull
- 29:13eligibility. You still have Utah to wrap it
- 29:14up. Even at home, you know that's
- 29:16going to be an incredibly difficult game.
- 29:19There's a reason they're five and five and and people that
- 29:22they'll want to put maybe a betting angle to it.
- 29:23Well, they're playing for bull eligibility.
- 29:25Well, they also have 5 losses, so I don't want to go that
- 29:27direction. But has that been a refrain?
- 29:29Has that been a calling card this week and getting that six
- 29:31win getting bull eligibility or in today's environment is it
- 29:35just not as big of a deal? Yeah, I think you know why Bolts
- 29:39program is very much day-to-day process oriented.
- 29:44I'm sure, you know, any Iowa State fan can relate to that
- 29:47type of messaging. You know, it's one of those
- 29:50where, you know, we talked to players today and it's like,
- 29:53hey, you know, ball eligibility, like we playing for that.
- 29:56What does that mean? They're like, yeah, you know, we
- 29:58we know what's at stake. Like, we want to get to a bowl
- 30:00game, but you can't make it a Super Bowl type of game because
- 30:04there's still one more game after that you got to get ready
- 30:06for. So look, the players know, you
- 30:09know, Lance knows, right, How important this game is because
- 30:12Utah looks like a juggernaut right now.
- 30:14And I think that's going to be a tough game for KU to keep in 10
- 30:17points. So this is it for KU.
- 30:21This is it. This is their chance to get to a
- 30:23bowl game. And so I think it's one of those
- 30:25where I don't think that KU wants to all of a sudden put all
- 30:27this pressure on everyone or then get tight in the game and
- 30:31and things don't go your way early.
- 30:33All of a sudden you're starting to really press.
- 30:35And that's when you know mistakes can happen.
- 30:37So you know, from a KU perspective, like everyone knows
- 30:39what fits take, everyone knows this is the chance.
- 30:42But I think it's one of those where I don't think they're
- 30:43trying to put all their eggs in one basket mentally.
- 30:46Or then if something doesn't go right in the 1st 15 minutes of
- 30:48the game, you're spiraling and then it becomes really hard to
- 30:51win the game. Because Iowa State's a team that
- 30:53I think if they have a lead, they can really control the pace
- 30:56of the game and that's really not a spot you want to be in.
- 30:59Away from the just sticking with football, but getting to the
- 31:02stadium and all the renovations where they pleased, the way it
- 31:05turned out is a significant upgrade.
- 31:07David Booth Stadium. Oh my God.
- 31:09Yeah. Night and day.
- 31:12Yeah. It's a crazy facility, honestly.
- 31:14It's one of those that, you know, talking to recruits that
- 31:16do kind of these fall tours that go to all different places.
- 31:20Like they remark that it's like one of the most, if not the most
- 31:24impressive facility in terms of just football stuff that they've
- 31:27seen. The stadium's incredible.
- 31:29Like, you know, I think I have to state come next year maybe or
- 31:33maybe the year after whatever, whenever the stadiums like fully
- 31:36done like I was state fans get to see like it is top of the
- 31:39line. It's a stadium that is very, I
- 31:42think modern in terms of just the arrangements, right?
- 31:46In a way you can get concessions and and of the fan viewing
- 31:49angles. So they did a really good job.
- 31:51Obviously now it comes down to, hey, can you finish the final
- 31:53third of it And then all the other kind of district stuff
- 31:55that gets built on around it. But yeah, I think they've done a
- 31:59a very good job. Obviously, you know, there are
- 32:01something, you know, like there's certain things that fans
- 32:03have said, OK, these are issues and it's the first season, so
- 32:06it'll be interesting to see you down the road if some of that
- 32:08stuff gets fixed. But, you know, overall, like the
- 32:11money was well put to use, right?
- 32:12I think all toll is going over 500 million for this first day
- 32:15itself. It's going to be a yeah, a good
- 32:18looking stadium. And then obviously they got the
- 32:20other part to get done, which will start after this year.
- 32:24Michael, it was such a weird year as we were previewing the
- 32:26season in college basketball in the Big 12.
- 32:29So we talked about Houston and oh, here's BYU and of course
- 32:32Arizona and dot dot, dot and we get to Sixers.
- 32:36Oh, I guess Kansas is still in the league, right?
- 32:38It just for year after year after year, winning this
- 32:41conference, right, winning the regular season crown seemingly
- 32:44every season for year after year and now not an afterthought, but
- 32:48just different. How is that playing right now in
- 32:52our perception? Certainly probably different
- 32:53than you guys have there in Kansas, but just how different
- 32:56this program feels at this moment compared to what we've
- 32:59grown accustomed to for the last 20 plus years.
- 33:01Yeah, it's been an adjustment period, I think for Kansas fans
- 33:04to go from, you know, the streak and everything that went along
- 33:08with that of winning the conference for, you know, a
- 33:10decade and a half to now this point where, you know, Kay, you
- 33:15going into a season, like you said, is picked in kind of that
- 33:18second tier of the conference. Obviously, the last two years
- 33:21have not gone well. And I think things got kind of
- 33:24toxic around Kansas with some players who've been around for a
- 33:26long time, a transfer that was brought in that, you know, get
- 33:29stats but doesn't equate to winning.
- 33:31And so a lot of that stuff I think became very toxic in the
- 33:34end of last year and going to this season.
- 33:36And it's refreshing. You know, Bill Self spent the
- 33:40better part of the last 12 months talking about how great
- 33:42Darren Peterson is and how excited Kansas fans are going to
- 33:45be to watch him. And, man, you watch against
- 33:47Louisville in the first half, like, the dude looked like the
- 33:49first pick in the NBA draft next year.
- 33:51But then this hamstring thing has popped up.
- 33:53And you know, now you're kind of in this spot where you're
- 33:56looking at a roster that was tailor made to kind of to be
- 33:59around Peterson and when you don't have that kind of Max
- 34:03contract player, right? Like the Denver Nuggets are not
- 34:05the same, but that Nicola Yokich, they look different.
- 34:07And so you're seeing some of the stuff and I think that's kind of
- 34:10cause of anxious. It's worth a damn.
- 34:12Well, if you don't have Peterson, like how good is this
- 34:15team? And the answer is mediocre, but
- 34:18that's what having the number one player that I'm more drafted
- 34:22next year does for you. He's the guy that the rising
- 34:25tide lifts all boats. He makes players around him
- 34:26better. And so that's kind of the bet
- 34:29Kansas has this year is that, hey, it's a little bit of a
- 34:32young team, right? Floyd Badonka is his first year
- 34:34starter. Corazzario is a freshman,
- 34:36Darren's a freshman. And then you got kind of two
- 34:38more elder statesman in Melbourne Council and Trey
- 34:40White. You know, you're really betting
- 34:42on if you're a Kansas fan right now that, hey, some of these
- 34:44young guys will figure it out. Darren's going to get this
- 34:46hamstring thing figured out. And by the time, you know,
- 34:49mid-december comes around, he's going to be playing
- 34:51consistently. And you can see kind of what
- 34:53this team's about. But I think it is a adjustment
- 34:56period now to what the Big 12 is, which is the best conference
- 34:59for basketball. And other teams have money now
- 35:03and other teams have the ability to put resources into their
- 35:05basketball teams. And it is created a landscape
- 35:09where K, you just can't walk out there with the best coach and
- 35:11the best team and know they're going to win every year.
- 35:13Like it comes down to roster building.
- 35:15I think the last two years the roster just was not good enough.
- 35:18And so that's kind of been an adjustment now that you're in a
- 35:21different area of college basketball.
- 35:22So it's made it for a rough couple of years and I think K
- 35:26fans are hoping that this season kind of gets away from this kind
- 35:29of down vibe right now and. It gets into something
- 35:32different. Looks like they got something
- 35:34again watching some of that North Carolina game.
- 35:36You can tell just by watching without even having a programmer
- 35:39knowing which one he is. You can tell the best player on
- 35:41the floor and it's college basketball fans.
- 35:43We lose tonight, right, because Peterson versus Boozer would
- 35:46have been appointment TV, Kansas versus Duke, but sadly not going
- 35:50to happen. Hey, brother, thanks, Michael
- 35:51Swain, we appreciate you doing this.
- 35:53Now we'll impose on you again when in the we get into the
- 35:57conference play in the Big 12 in Kansas and Iowa State collide
- 36:00hopefully Peterson's back and ready to go with that particular
- 36:03point. Michael, thanks for doing this,
- 36:04Appreciate it. Good to talk to you again.
- 36:07Of course. Yeah.
- 36:07Great to talk to you guys as well.
- 36:08We'll talk to you guys in the new year.
- 36:10Indeed you will. Thanks.

- 37:16tonight, Trent, as far as my TV with the basketball from Madison
- 37:21Square Garden, Michigan State and Kentucky, followed up by
- 37:23Duke and Kansas. So the playoff show would
- 37:26probably be between those two games, right?
- 37:28That's how they normally do it. Yeah, that's what they've done
- 37:30in the years past and I believe that is the plan.
- 37:33Anything you're going to watch on that?
- 37:34I mean, I know you're not going to watch the show, but when you
- 37:36when you see a recap, what will you look for firstly?
- 37:39Ah, Miami, where they are. Yeah, in comparison to Notre
- 37:42Dame. Want to see if that's tightened?
- 37:44Both in No, you don't think they are.
- 37:47Well, I mean, they put it Miami, unless they're not in, they're
- 37:49not leading the ACC. Oh.
- 37:52I know they're not. Yep.
- 37:53Another thing that just bothers me.

- 38:00No. OK.
- 38:02Didn't they play? And I don't know, did they?
- 38:05They might have, might have been Recently the Navy got them.
- 38:08Let's see. Navy's got one loss.
- 38:11Navy's got one loss didn't they get?
- 38:15No, they got 2 losses lost to Notre Dame.
- 38:16Well, in conference I'm talking. About and in conference and
- 38:19their conference loss was North Texas.
- 38:22They lost by 14/31/17. So North Texas, probably in the
- 38:25driver's seat. Got to win out.
- 38:28Got to win out. Tricky spot Friday night.
- 38:30North Texas got Temple coming to town.
- 38:34No, that's the finaling week. They got rice this week on the
- 38:38road. All right, that's a layup.

- 38:41You're going to be playing any. Hoops, yes.
- 38:43College basketball, we got 5 plays for tonight, Grab and
- 38:45Sparty, plus the five and a half against Kentucky.
- 38:47This young Kentucky team first time in this kind of
- 38:49environment. No, they played Louisville
- 38:51already still and that. Didn't go well.
- 38:54And it didn't green grab Michigan State plus the five and
- 38:57a half. They're also going to play the
- 38:58other side of the Champions Classic.
- 39:00Going to lay it with Duke. We talked about the injury.
- 39:02It's substantial. It's.
- 39:04Really big. Kansas isn't.
- 39:06Very good. I don't think they are even with
- 39:07him. No, he's really good though,
- 39:09Trent. But the rest of the team is.
- 39:10Very good North Carolina was they were getting crushed?
- 39:14Was it 2 fragile? Anyways, it was just two
- 39:15different games. Lay the 10 1/2.
