- 0:00Speaker 1: As it came to pass, as they still went on
- 0:03Speaker 1: and talked, that behold, there appeared a chariot of fire
- 0:08Speaker 1: and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder, and
- 0:12Speaker 1: Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 2 Kings
- 0:18Speaker 1: 2.11 Lord, as you place powerful men and women in
- 0:23Speaker 1: my life as mentors, I have made the decision that
- 0:27Speaker 1: I will not stop pursuing them, even when it's convenient
- 0:30Speaker 1: to leave and be on my own. I declare that
- 0:34Speaker 1: I will not leave or part ways until you tell
- 0:38Speaker 1: me to do so, God. When other people in my
- 0:42Speaker 1: field try to discourage me and dissuade me from holding
- 0:45Speaker 1: fast to the process, I will ignore them because I
- 0:50Speaker 1: am not moved by external voices but by internal convictions.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Because proximity determines my ability, I will stay close until
- 1:01Speaker 1: I receive a double portion of the wisdom and knowledge
- 1:05Speaker 1: they possess. I praise you, Lord, because in your goodness,
- 1:10Speaker 1: you also give me the opportunity to go above and
- 1:13Speaker 1: beyond those who guide me, that I can be blessed
- 1:17Speaker 1: to be a blessing to those coming after me. In Jesus' name, amen.

- 1:42Speaker 2: Chariots of Fire In our last story, we learned about
- 1:47Speaker 2: Ahaziah's short reign as king over Israel. He fell from
- 1:52Speaker 2: the top of his upper room and injured himself beyond repair.
- 1:56Speaker 2: He sought the healing and guidance of the Philistine gods,
- 1:59Speaker 2: but was instead met with Elijah's rebuke and God's justice.
- 2:04Speaker 2: In this story, we witness Elijah's departure from this earth
- 2:08Speaker 2: through the eyes of his student, Elisha. Elisha witnesses the
- 2:12Speaker 2: glory and profound power of God as he takes his
- 2:16Speaker 2: master up in a chariot of fire. Inspired by the
- 2:20Speaker 2: book of 2 Kings.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:27Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. But before we begin, I want

- 2:42Speaker 3: the daily tasks and pressures and burdens that bring stress
- 2:45Speaker 3: in your life. Download your free copy of Breaking Free
- 2:49Speaker 3: from Stress today by visiting jackgraham.org slash stress. That's jackram.org
- 2:56Speaker 3: slash stress. In our last time together, we learned about Ahaziah, who,
- 3:01Speaker 3: like his father Ahab, looked to help and hope in
- 3:05Speaker 3: foreign gods and false deities. His reign and his life
- 3:09Speaker 3: was cut short because he did not seek the one
- 3:11Speaker 3: true God. Elijah had delivered God's message of judgment to
- 3:16Speaker 3: Ahaziah as the king lay helplessly in bed after a
- 3:19Speaker 3: great fall. Today, we'll hear how Elijah's time on earth
- 3:23Speaker 3: changed comes to an end. This great man of God,
- 3:27Speaker 3: the one who served God so faithfully and forcefully, would
- 3:30Speaker 3: be taken up before the eyes of his successor, Elisha.
- 3:34Speaker 3: It is an incredible display of God's supernatural power that
- 3:39Speaker 3: will profoundly impact Elisha as he takes on the mantle
- 3:43Speaker 3: of the prophet of God to be the man of
- 3:45Speaker 3: God to God's people. So, let's listen to today's reading.
- 3:52Speaker 2: The sun was high in the sky. A few clouds
- 3:55Speaker 2: danced around it to the late summer breeze, creating brief
- 3:58Speaker 2: moments of shade for the two travelers below. The earth
- 4:02Speaker 2: and sky seemed to be in perfect harmony, both dancing
- 4:06Speaker 2: and swaying to the wind. On the trail surrounded by
- 4:09Speaker 2: lilies coming from Gilgal walked Elijah and Elisha. The old
- 4:14Speaker 2: and grizzled prophet had traveled everywhere with his young apprentice.
- 4:18Speaker 2: The two of them had experienced many miracles together, Elijah
- 4:23Speaker 2: had taught Elisha the ways of God. He spoke of
- 4:26Speaker 2: the Lord's truth, justice, goodness, and mercy. Elisha was able
- 4:30Speaker 2: to observe the way Elijah cared for the people of Israel.
- 4:34Speaker 2: He gave his entire life to them, ministering and healing
- 4:38Speaker 2: when necessary. He had also watched Elijah speak truth to power.
- 4:43Speaker 2: He confronted kings and queens despite his fears. Elisha admired
- 4:48Speaker 2: his old teacher. He prayed to God daily. He would
- 4:51Speaker 2: become just as good a man as he. No, he
- 4:54Speaker 2: prayed he would be better. He prayed for faithfulness like
- 4:58Speaker 2: his and a strong sense of justice and truth. The
- 5:02Speaker 2: two of them strolled along in silence. The grass next
- 5:06Speaker 2: to the trail swayed gracefully all throughout the valley. Elijah
- 5:10Speaker 2: turned his face towards the sun and breathed in the
- 5:13Speaker 2: sweet summer air. He turned to his young student and said,
- 5:18Speaker 2: The Lord has told me to go to Bethel. You
- 5:21Speaker 2: should remain here. Elisha smiled and shook his head. He
- 5:25Speaker 2: had a feeling as to what the Lord was about
- 5:27Speaker 2: to do. No, he responded plainly. As the Lord lives,
- 5:32Speaker 2: I will not leave your side. So the two of
- 5:34Speaker 2: them changed course to the holy ground of Bethel, where
- 5:38Speaker 2: Jacob once prayed many years ago. On their way to Bethel,
- 5:42Speaker 2: a group of prophets passed them on the road. They
- 5:44Speaker 2: had anticipated Elisha's arrival, for the Lord had spoken to
- 5:48Speaker 2: them as well. They walked beside the two men in silence. However,
- 5:53Speaker 2: one turned to Elisha and whispered, Do you know that
- 5:56Speaker 2: the Lord is going to take your master away today?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Elisha looked at the prophet intently and put his hand
- 6:03Speaker 2: on his shoulder. He gave a quick smile and said, Yes.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He then turned to look at his master walking ahead
- 6:10Speaker 2: of him, but he will not speak of it today.
- 6:14Speaker 2: The men had arrived at Bethel, and Elisha stayed for
- 6:17Speaker 2: a few moments to speak to the Lord. Elisha stood
- 6:20Speaker 2: at a distance. He was always curious as to how
- 6:23Speaker 2: the Lord spoke to Elisha. Was it how he spoke
- 6:26Speaker 2: to him? Was it through whispers or feelings? Did he
- 6:30Speaker 2: see an angel before him? These were things Elisha would
- 6:34Speaker 2: never know. Elisha turned to Elisha and said, There was
- 6:38Speaker 2: a weariness in Elisha's voice. It was almost as if
- 6:47Speaker 2: he had run away from his age for years and
- 6:49Speaker 2: it was finally gaining on him. Elisha smiled again and said, No,
- 6:55Speaker 2: I think I will go with you. As the Lord lives,
- 6:58Speaker 2: I shall not leave your side. So the two set
- 7:01Speaker 2: off again towards Jericho. When they arrived, Elisha departed again
- 7:06Speaker 2: to pray. A group of prophets from the area walked
- 7:09Speaker 2: up to Elisha, who was standing at a distance from
- 7:12Speaker 2: his master. They brought him in and whispered, Did you
- 7:15Speaker 2: know that the Lord is going to take Elijah away today?
- 7:19Speaker 2: This time there was a slight heaviness in Elisha's chest
- 7:22Speaker 2: as he replied, Of course I know, he said somberly,
- 7:27Speaker 2: but do not speak of it. Elisha finished praying and
- 7:31Speaker 2: came back to Elisha. It is time for me to
- 7:34Speaker 2: go to the Jordan River. You should stay here. It
- 7:38Speaker 2: was a silly command, for Elisha knew that his young
- 7:41Speaker 2: student would not leave his side. The two of them
- 7:44Speaker 2: traveled a short while to the Jordan River. A group
- 7:48Speaker 2: of prophets followed them at a distance, curious as to
- 7:51Speaker 2: when Elijah would pass away. The two men stopped beside
- 7:55Speaker 2: the Jordan. The river flowed heavily. Tumbling rocks could be
- 7:59Speaker 2: heard from beneath the waters. Elijah removed his cloak and
- 8:02Speaker 2: folded it into a whip. He swung his hips and
- 8:05Speaker 2: struck the water with his cloak. Elisha watched as his
- 8:09Speaker 2: master's cloak caused the flowing river to split before them.
- 8:13Speaker 2: The river divided and the two of them were able
- 8:15Speaker 2: to cross on dry ground. Hundreds of memories flowed in
- 8:19Speaker 2: Elisha's head as they crossed. Memories of stories told for generations.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Stories of God splitting the Red Sea for Moses and
- 8:27Speaker 2: the Jordan River for Joshua. Was his master as faithful
- 8:31Speaker 2: as they were? Did he hold the same favor of God?
- 8:35Speaker 2: The two of them walked along the path and Elisha
- 8:38Speaker 2: could sense Elisha's mind racing. He smiled and said, Tell me,
- 8:43Speaker 2: my son, what can I do for you before I
- 8:46Speaker 2: am taken away? Elijah's eyes lit up. He did his
- 8:50Speaker 2: best to withhold his boyish grin. I want a double
- 8:54Speaker 2: share of what the Lord has given you. I want
- 8:57Speaker 2: to be your successor and see greater things done for God.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Elijah was pleased at his request. Elijah did not just
- 9:05Speaker 2: want to be as faithful as Elijah. He wanted to
- 9:08Speaker 2: be more faithful. He wanted a double portion of God's
- 9:11Speaker 2: Spirit upon him. You have asked for a great and
- 9:14Speaker 2: difficult thing, Elisha replied frankly. However, if you see how
- 9:20Speaker 2: I am taken away, then your request will definitely be granted,
- 9:25Speaker 2: for God will show his glory to those he wishes
- 9:27Speaker 2: to use. If you do not witness my departure, then
- 9:31Speaker 2: you will not receive any of his spirit. The two
- 9:36Speaker 2: walked and talked for a few moments. Elisha watched his
- 9:39Speaker 2: old master walk purposefully forward. Then, suddenly, the clouds opened
- 9:44Speaker 2: up like fortified gates. Blinding light emanated from the sky,
- 9:49Speaker 2: only it was not light from the sun. Elisha could
- 9:52Speaker 2: hear trumpets sounding like thunder, and he watched as a
- 9:55Speaker 2: chariot of fire descended violently from the clouds.
- 9:59Speaker 3: The chariot?
- 10:00Speaker 2: Was consumed with fire and drawn by horses of flames.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Elisha could not see who was riding the chariot, but
- 10:07Speaker 2: he could see it descending as if the air was
- 10:09Speaker 2: thick enough to ride on. The chariot blew in between
- 10:13Speaker 2: the two men, flinging Elisha back onto the ground. He
- 10:17Speaker 2: watched as his master was wrapped up in a whirlwind
- 10:20Speaker 2: The bright light swirled around the old prophet in the
- 10:23Speaker 2: chariot of fire like a tornado. As the winds blew
- 10:27Speaker 2: violently and the light burned brightly, Elisha could see a
- 10:30Speaker 2: smile worn on the face of his master Elijah. I
- 10:33Speaker 2: can see it, Elisha yelled to his beloved master. Tears
- 10:38Speaker 2: filled his eyes as he watched the beauty of God
- 10:41Speaker 2: unfolding before him. My father, I can see you. I
- 10:45Speaker 2: can see the chariots of Israel. Then, just as quickly
- 10:49Speaker 2: as it came, The whirlwind left with Elijah wrapped up
- 10:53Speaker 2: in it. All was calm and still. Elisha remained on
- 10:58Speaker 2: the floor in awe of what had just happened. Elisha's
- 11:02Speaker 2: face was covered in tears and dust. Elisha looked down
- 11:07Speaker 2: at his clothes to realize he had torn his shirt
- 11:10Speaker 2: in amazement. He stumbled to his feet and walked towards
- 11:13Speaker 2: the cloak Elijah had left when taken up. Silently, Elisha
- 11:18Speaker 2: picked up the cloak. folded it, and headed down to
- 11:21Speaker 2: the river. Had God given him his spirit? Elisha lifted
- 11:25Speaker 2: up the cloak, swung his hips, and struck the water
- 11:28Speaker 2: as his master did just moments before. Elisha watched as
- 11:32Speaker 2: the rivers opened up before him. A content smile slid
- 11:36Speaker 2: across his face. A group of prophets saw this from
- 11:40Speaker 2: a distance and exclaimed, Elisha's spirit is upon Elisha. So
- 11:45Speaker 2: they ran to him and bowed before him. The reverence
- 11:48Speaker 2: made Elisha uncomfortable, for he knew it was the Spirit
- 11:51Speaker 2: of God. The men were frantic in saying, Do you
- 11:55Speaker 2: want us to look for your master? Perhaps the Lord
- 11:59Speaker 2: brought him to another place. Elisha shook his head and
- 12:02Speaker 2: said no. He knew his master was gone with God. However,
- 12:07Speaker 2: the prophets insisted and still looked. For days they searched
- 12:11Speaker 2: and found nothing. A few days later, the town of
- 12:14Speaker 2: Jericho sent leaders to visit Elisha, They came to him
- 12:18Speaker 2: with a dire problem they needed the Lord's aid in.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Our town is beautiful, but our water is toxic and
- 12:25Speaker 2: causing disease, they said. Our crops are poisoned and our
- 12:28Speaker 2: children are sickened. Elisha considered their problem carefully and prayed
- 12:32Speaker 2: to the Lord for wisdom. He had them bring him
- 12:36Speaker 2: a bowl of salt. Then he went out to the
- 12:39Speaker 2: spring that supplied the town with water. He bent down
- 12:42Speaker 2: and threw the salt into the water. He whispered slightly
- 12:46Speaker 2: to the Lord, and then turned to the leaders and said,
- 12:49Speaker 2: The Lord has purified your water. Neither death or infertility
- 12:53Speaker 2: will plague this city. As Elisha was leaving, a group
- 12:57Speaker 2: of boys began mocking him. They threw insults and stones
- 13:01Speaker 2: his way. Go home, baldy, they shouted, mocking his bald head.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Forty-two boys bombarded Elisha with evil laughter and prideful spitting.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Elisha did not speak. He only looked at them intensely. Then,
- 13:17Speaker 2: in a terrifying turn of events, two bears ran towards
- 13:20Speaker 2: them from the woods. Their growls drowned out the screaming
- 13:24Speaker 2: of all forty-two boys. Their claws tore them limb from limb,
- 13:28Speaker 2: and they feasted on the mocking teenagers. Elisha walked away
- 13:33Speaker 2: from the thrashing and went back to Mount Carmel.
- 13:39Speaker 3: As we read God's Word today, we find Elijah and
- 13:42Speaker 3: his apprentice, Elijah, walking together on the road from Gilgal.
- 13:46Speaker 3: It had been more than six years since the Lord
- 13:48Speaker 3: had led Elijah to the young man Elisha, and since
- 13:51Speaker 3: that day the two had walked side by side closely together.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Elijah knew that God had plans for Elisha, and the
- 14:00Speaker 3: job that Elisha was going to take on was no
- 14:02Speaker 3: small task. So the seasoned prophet poured his life into
- 14:07Speaker 3: his apprentice, mentoring him in how to walk with God,
- 14:10Speaker 3: how to listen to God's voice, how to be a
- 14:12Speaker 3: man of God. Surely, as they walked along the road,
- 14:16Speaker 3: he continued to train him and teach him, especially now
- 14:19Speaker 3: as Elijah knew that his time was ending. Because that
- 14:23Speaker 3: day was different, it was time for a changing of
- 14:25Speaker 3: the guard. Elijah first tells Elisha that God had called
- 14:29Speaker 3: him to Bethel. But Elisha knows this day is different also,
- 14:34Speaker 3: and he insists he won't leave his master's side. Elisha
- 14:38Speaker 3: wanted to make the most of the time he had
- 14:40Speaker 3: left with his mentor, to learn all that he could
- 14:42Speaker 3: and to enjoy his presence while he was still able.
- 14:46Speaker 3: I think many of us can relate to this kind
- 14:48Speaker 3: of sentiment, the desire to make the most of what
- 14:51Speaker 3: time we have with a very special person in our life,
- 14:55Speaker 3: whether it is a spouse or a child or a friend.
- 14:59Speaker 3: So both men went to Bethel together. The prophets in
- 15:03Speaker 3: Bethel asked Elisha if he knew God was going to
- 15:06Speaker 3: take Elijah away that day. He said he did, but
- 15:10Speaker 3: he did not want to speak of it. God then
- 15:12Speaker 3: led Elijah to Jericho. Again, he asked Elisha to stay behind,
- 15:17Speaker 3: but Elisha refused to part with his master. So they
- 15:21Speaker 3: went together, and once again, the prophets asked Elisha if
- 15:24Speaker 3: he knew God was about to take Elijah. He said yes,
- 15:29Speaker 3: but to keep quiet. Why did he want them to
- 15:31Speaker 3: keep quiet? Not because it was some big secret, as
- 15:35Speaker 3: it seemed God had made known to many of the
- 15:37Speaker 3: prophets to whom he spoke, but Elisha said this because
- 15:41Speaker 3: he didn't want to get caught up in talking about
- 15:43Speaker 3: what was going to happen, that he missed what actually
- 15:47Speaker 3: did happen. His mind was focused on watching and waiting
- 15:51Speaker 3: for what God would do. How often do we get
- 15:54Speaker 3: our attention pulled away by concerns or anticipation of things
- 15:58Speaker 3: to come, even worry, and we miss what God is
- 16:01Speaker 3: doing right in front of us? Always focus on today
- 16:05Speaker 3: and maximizing every day of your life. And so when
- 16:09Speaker 3: Elisha tells Elisha to stay there, While he goes to
- 16:12Speaker 3: the Jordan River, his answer is obvious. No, he will
- 16:15Speaker 3: walk with him. The events at the Jordan take us
- 16:19Speaker 3: back to so many moments when God's glory and power
- 16:22Speaker 3: were on display throughout Jewish history. Supernatural power. When Elijah
- 16:27Speaker 3: strikes the water with his cloak and the river parts,
- 16:30Speaker 3: it was a reminder that God is the same God
- 16:32Speaker 3: who parted the sea for Moses and the very same
- 16:35Speaker 3: river for Joshua. After they crossed on dry land, Elijah
- 16:40Speaker 3: asked his apprentice something. We read his question and Elisha's
- 16:43Speaker 3: response in 2 Kings 2.9. When they had crossed, Elijah
- 16:50Speaker 3: said to Elisha, Ask what I shall do for you
- 16:53Speaker 3: before I am taken from you. And Elisha said, Please
- 16:57Speaker 3: let there be a double portion of your spirit upon me.
- 17:01Speaker 3: What a wonderful request. Elisha knew that he had impossible
- 17:05Speaker 3: tasks in front of him and big shoes to fill.
- 17:08Speaker 3: And his question shows his humility and and his maturity,
- 17:12Speaker 3: and his selflessness. He wasn't just asking this for himself,
- 17:16Speaker 3: for his own glory or power. He wanted to be
- 17:19Speaker 3: fully prepared to be a man of God, to speak
- 17:22Speaker 3: God's word, to minister to the people just as Elijah had.
- 17:26Speaker 3: So he asked for more, more of God's power, more
- 17:30Speaker 3: of God's blessing, a double portion of the Spirit of God.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Elijah told him this is a heavy request. He knew
- 17:38Speaker 3: what the life of a prophet meant, and it often
- 17:41Speaker 3: meant fierce opposition from wicked people. Notice he did not
- 17:45Speaker 3: give him a yes or no because he knew this
- 17:47Speaker 3: was not his to grant, but God gives spiritual power.
- 17:52Speaker 3: So he told Elisha to watch what was about to happen.
- 17:55Speaker 3: And if he could see him being taken up, translated
- 17:58Speaker 3: up into heaven, he would know God would grant his request.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Elisha then saw an amazing sight. It was spectacular. It
- 18:07Speaker 3: was supernatural. Chariots of fire and a whirlwind descending from heaven. Fire,
- 18:13Speaker 3: which had marked so much of Elijah's ministry, was now
- 18:16Speaker 3: being used to usher him into the presence of the Lord,
- 18:20Speaker 3: the one he had faithfully served. This was a rapture.
- 18:24Speaker 3: This was a translation into heaven. Elijah did not die
- 18:27Speaker 3: a physical death. Elisha saw it all and knew God
- 18:31Speaker 3: had granted his request. It was a moment filled with
- 18:34Speaker 3: wonder and amazement, but also sorrow and grief, for now
- 18:39Speaker 3: the man of God, his mentor, a man who has
- 18:42Speaker 3: been like a father to him, is gone. We close
- 18:46Speaker 3: the passage with Elisha immediately seeing God's power working in him,
- 18:50Speaker 3: first in the parting of the Jordan once again, and
- 18:53Speaker 3: then as he brought about healing to Jericho's poisoned waters. Yes,
- 18:58Speaker 3: God's hand was on Elisha, and he would do great
- 19:01Speaker 3: things in the name of the Lord, pointing the Lord's
- 19:04Speaker 3: people towards hope and righteousness and faith, and God would
- 19:09Speaker 3: bless him abundantly. Dear Lord, the God of Elijah and Elisha,
- 19:15Speaker 3: we thank you for this extreme example of faith and perseverance.
- 19:19Speaker 3: We thank you for your power to take us to
- 19:21Speaker 3: heaven when our time comes, and Lord, that we are
- 19:24Speaker 3: trusting in you, not only throughout life, but at the
- 19:27Speaker 3: end of our lives. We thank you for Elisha's relationship
- 19:33Speaker 3: with Elijah. And we pray that you would give us
- 19:36Speaker 3: influence on those around us, our family, our friends, members
- 19:40Speaker 3: of our churches, that we would mentor and coach and
- 19:43Speaker 3: guide and give spiritual leadership to those around us. Help
- 19:48Speaker 3: us to be men and women of God. always seeking
- 19:51Speaker 3: your truth and proclaiming your name. Amen. Thank you for
