Biologists in North Carolina have made a major discovery: Indiana bats, federally endangered since 1967, were spotted for the first time in over a decade. Found earlier this year in the Nantahala National Forest, researchers captured five females—including two tagged with transmitters—and located a maternity roost in a dead hemlock tree, where 24 bats emerged at dusk. This hopeful sign comes amid devastating losses from white-nose syndrome, which has killed millions of bats since 2006 and arrived in North Carolina in 2011.
