- 0:00In this lessons episode, discover why financial success means little when it comes at the expense of family and peace of mind.
- 0:07Understand how life's hardest moments can redefine wealth.
- 0:09Explore why separating identity from business performance builds resilience.
- 0:13And uncover how knowing when enough is enough protects what matters most.
- 0:24Why is there that negative connotation?
- 0:25Like, I don't understand that, but there was always this, I don't know if it's true or not, but I always felt that with very religious people, there was this almost negative connotation about money.
- 0:34Yeah.
- 0:35And I never got it.
- 0:36I never really understood where that came from.
- 0:38It comes from ignorance.
- 0:39So the Bible does not talk negatively about like rich people.
- 0:45It's not that rich people are bad or anything like that.
- 0:48You know, it's that camel quote.
- 0:50Yeah.
- 0:51Yeah.
- 0:51Yeah.
- 0:52That's, but it's easier for the camel to go through the eye of the needle than it is for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.
- 0:59And it's true, right?
- 1:00That's kind of a little bit different in that.
- 1:02And this is why my mission has really been to help entrepreneurs.
- 1:04That's why I love talking about it on shows like this, who a lot of people who don't know me, but like, it's hard to get a rich person to, you know, give themselves a Christ because they think they got it all right.
- 1:15Like everybody's like, bro, you're killing it.
- 1:17What you're doing is awesome.
- 1:18Like you have all the things you could ever want.
- 1:21And so they don't even realize how much of a problem they have.
- 1:24So that's why that, that quote exists.
- 1:26But yeah,
- 1:27you know, in terms of, um, why do we have this poverty minded, this poverty mindset in Christianity?
- 1:34There's definitely like a set of Christians that have that mindset.
- 1:38And, um,
- 1:40I think there's lots of reasons for it, so I can't name all of them.
- 1:45A couple of them are that, you know, misinterpreting Bible verses, right?
- 1:51Like 2 Corinthians 9, 6-7 says like... Or no, that's talking about giving.
- 1:56But, you know, there's a Bible verse that talks about how, you know, you can't worship both God and money.
- 2:01You know, you can only be a slave to one.
- 2:03And the truth is, if you go back to what I said where it's like, okay, if I worship God and I just trust God for everything...
- 2:10Money will come as a byproduct.
- 2:11Now, how much money, I don't know.
- 2:13But I know I'm going to be taken care of.
- 2:15You know, you might end up a guy like me.
- 2:16You might end up, you know, middle class.
- 2:18You might end up whatever, right?
- 2:19But odds are, you know, you're going to be okay.
- 2:22And then there's what you would have prosperity.
- 2:25You know, minded Christians who think every Christian should be rich.
- 2:28Like, you know, God bless.
- 2:31They believe that God blesses those, you know, who are true believers.
- 2:36And if you're not a true believer, that's why you're broke.
- 2:40Like, that's their mindset.
- 2:41And that's also wrong.
- 2:43The truth is God has given us all different skills and talents and abilities.
- 2:46And so, you know, we're called to just play our role.
- 2:49One of my favorite ideas, this is not my idea, I can't remember who had originally said this, but if you do not have God in your life, something else will replace God for you.
- 2:59Yeah.
- 2:59And it'll be advice.
- 3:00It'll be... We'll call those idols.
- 3:02Yeah.
- 3:03Exactly.
- 3:03And I don't think that's healthy either.
- 3:04No.
- 3:05I think it's incredibly toxic.
- 3:06Well, and I'll say this too, and I'll say, like, I'm acting like I'm the most wholesome guy ever.
- 3:11I am not, okay?
- 3:12So, you know, I've had many failures in my life, man.
- 3:15I've been sued.
- 3:16I've had people lose money.
- 3:19I've done everything you can imagine, man.
- 3:21I like, I don't.
- 3:21Oh, by the way, that is a right of business.
- 3:23I mean, if you build a big enough business, all this shit happens.
- 3:25Yeah.
- 3:26Yeah.
- 3:26You're not going to, you know, bat a thousand.
- 3:28Right.
- 3:29But with that, you know, I've just kind of realized that, you know, I'm so thankful that.
- 3:39I don't have to like live in that guilt.
- 3:43And I'm also thankful that my career is not my identity because.
- 3:47Yeah.
- 3:48You know, there are times where, man, in business, I'd be killing it, man.
- 3:52It's like, you know, everybody's like, bro, you know, how much did you guys do?
- 3:56You guys did so many deals.
- 3:57Look at how many views you're getting.
- 3:59You know, let's interview you about this thing, right?
- 4:01And then all of a sudden next year, boom, doubles interest rates, recession.
- 4:05And it's like, dude, I'm losing money.
- 4:07What's going on here, right?
- 4:09And throughout it all, it's like.
- 4:12I just don't let my business career, you know, become my idol because that's what a lot of people do.
- 4:18And I struggled with that early on.
- 4:20And God kind of brought me through it with my baseball career because I was that way in baseball every day.
- 4:26You know, in baseball, you know, baseball is a lot different than in business because in baseball, you play every day and your stats are public.
- 4:33Imagine if your bank account, your P&L was public in every business every day.
- 4:37It got updated like, oh, Ryan.
- 4:39Dang, Ryan, they didn't make any money.
- 4:41You actually lost money on a deal.
- 4:43And everyone could see it.
- 4:45That's how sports is.
- 4:46It's all transparent.
- 4:48And, you know, that was hard for me as a 21-year-old, you know, trying to deal with.
- 4:54And then you get released.
- 4:56You get fired.
- 4:58And you got to deal with that.
- 5:00And it's all very public.
- 5:01It's all public.
- 5:01Everyone knows.
- 5:03And I did that for eight seasons, man, battling identity.
- 5:06And it wasn't until the end when I really started to understand, like, man, this doesn't matter.
- 5:11Like, at the end of the day, I can't have my happiness and my peace be defined if I had a good game yesterday or if I had a good week.
- 5:19That was a good lesson for business, too.
- 5:21Yeah.
- 5:22And that's why when I came into business later...
- 5:25I had kind of learned all those lessons in my 20s, and I'm like, bro, I don't care if we have a bad week.
- 5:31I don't care if somebody's talking crap online.
- 5:33Yeah.
- 5:33Like, this is nothing.
- 5:35Was there an experience that sort of reshaped your definition of wealth from pure finance to, like, more of a holistic definition of wealth?
- 5:46Yeah, it was actually the birth of my son.
- 5:49So my son was born in January of 2019.
- 5:55He was born prematurely.
- 5:56So he's two months premature.
- 5:59And, you know, I didn't like it was crazy.
- 6:03You know, she's having contractions.
- 6:04We didn't know.
- 6:04Like as our first child, we didn't know what was going on.
- 6:08Like, hey, the baby's coming, like, right now.
- 6:09And I'm like, dude, he's supposed to come in, like, two months.
- 6:12What do you mean right now?
- 6:13That's so stressful.
- 6:14And they're like, well, he's coming right now.
- 6:16And I'm like, is he going to make it?
- 6:19Like, this is pretty early.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:21And they're like, well, we can't say, but, you know, just we're getting prepared.
- 6:26So, you know, I'm praying.
- 6:27Once again, seek God in every situation.
- 6:30And he's born.
- 6:32They say he's going to have a lot of complications and issues.
- 6:36He ends up having to stay in the NICU for two months.
- 6:39So every day for two months, I had to go.
- 6:42you know, to the hospital in the morning to go see him, go see him with my wife at night.
- 6:47And it was a super stressful time, especially for my wife.
- 6:50You know, she's a brand new mom and she can't even be with her baby.
- 6:54And he can't breathe.
- 6:55He can't eat.
- 6:56He can't do anything.
- 6:57Like, he's got all these problems.
- 7:00You know, finally, we get to take him home.
- 7:03And, dude, we're scared because he can't breathe.
- 7:06Like, I'm like, what if he stops breathing while he's at home?
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:10You know, like, it's just stressful.
- 7:11Yeah.
- 7:12And, you know, throughout that time, too, you know, like there's a very high chance he's going to have special needs.
- 7:18You know, you're going to have to start getting him in therapies and all these things every week.
- 7:22And so, you know, my wife's learning how to navigate that process of everything.
- 7:27And yeah.
- 7:28You know, that first year was so extremely stressful and hard because it was just all new and all unknown.
- 7:35And also, too, during that year was like one of the times in business where like we really had to do a big pivot.
- 7:39And like it was it was very stressful as well.
- 7:43And so I made the choice that year because my wife was really struggling with it.
- 7:47And I said, you know what?
- 7:49I was already on the schedule of, you know, Monday through Friday, nine to five.
- 7:54Like, so, you know, for a lot of guys, it might be like, well, dude, I'm like, I'm home a lot.
- 7:58But I could tell that she needed more.
- 8:01And so I said, you know what?
- 8:02I'm just not going to go to work on Wednesdays either.
- 8:05You know, I'm going to spend Wednesdays with just her and try to give her a break, kind of like be there for her right now in this really hard time.
- 8:14And I did that for most of the year.
- 8:17Yeah.
- 8:18And that really like was what she needed at that time.
- 8:22And at the end of the year, this was about a week before Christmas, he fell and hit his head.
- 8:29And he had this big old knot on his head.
- 8:30So we took him to the hospital.
- 8:33And, you know, we're like, is he okay?
- 8:35Like, what's the deal?
- 8:36And they're like, oh, he's fine.
- 8:37Don't worry about it.
- 8:37So we took him home.
- 8:39About two days later, or a day later, I can't even remember.
- 8:43I'm looking at him and we're like, he's not fine.
- 8:45Like he's back.
- 8:46Like he's just out of it.
- 8:47There's no way he's okay.
- 8:48So we take them to a different hospital.
- 8:51They said, dude, we got to get them an MRI.
- 8:52Like they didn't even MRI him or x-ray or anything.
- 8:56We're like, no, they said he was fine.
- 8:58So they gave him an MRI and they're like, his brain is bleeding.
- 9:02We need to like do surgery right now.
- 9:05And I was like, oh my gosh.
- 9:07And so, um,
- 9:11They prepare him for emergency surgery.
- 9:13I'm praying again.
- 9:14And I'm like, God, look, I give up everything to make sure that this surgery is successful.
- 9:22You could take the business.
- 9:24You could take the money.
- 9:26You could take literally everything.
- 9:28Just make sure he's successful.
- 9:30And.
- 9:32I was like pleading.
- 9:33I'm like, I will devote everything to you to see him through.
- 9:38You know, you could have it all if you want it, but I'm going to devote everything to you if you can pull him through.
- 9:45And, you know, sure enough, he went for surgery overnight.
- 9:50You know, this is obviously super stressful just waiting for that.
- 9:52Like we had no idea.
- 9:54He's not even a year old yet.
- 9:56And he makes it through.
- 9:59And also during that time, too, my wife was pregnant and no one knew.
- 10:03So we had so much going on that first year as parents.
- 10:09And, you know, he makes it through.
- 10:10We actually got to take him home on Christmas Day.
- 10:13So that was the present.
- 10:16And I just learned from that year that,
- 10:21Yeah, like I looked at death in the face with my kid, my firstborn, and I'm like, this ain't worth it.
- 10:28Like it's not worth it to miss moments of his life being young.
- 10:33No amount of money is worth it.
- 10:35And I just was like, and I have enough money right now.
- 10:36Like every step of the way, I felt like I've had enough money, you know, like whether I was making...
- 10:42you know, seven, eight grand a month flipping couches or a hundred grand a month.
- 10:46You know, we've had a million dollar months and like, I have not felt any different as far as the money goes.
- 10:51I've just always like, from that moment forward, I realized, man, it doesn't matter.
- 10:58Like, this is what matters.
- 10:59So you'd never want to wish that experience on anyone else because that's horrible.
- 11:03Yeah.
- 11:04And I think what I want to sort of ask you and pull out of you is for somebody who has not gone through that experience, what is your words of wisdom for them so that they can understand what they're doing?
- 11:19why they can conceptualize how something can be more important than the business they're building or the money they're making.
- 11:25Because I agree, when you go through rock bottom, it gets very clear.
- 11:28But what I'm trying to figure out is how do you teach that over to somebody before they've gone through this rock bottom moment?
- 11:36Unfortunately, most people have to experience things for themselves.
- 11:41And I've been that way on many lessons.
- 11:44I've had so many mentors and people come through these doors like, Ryan, this is what you should be doing.
- 11:48This is what you should be doing.
- 11:49I'm like...
- 11:51Yeah, I'm going to keep doing this.
- 11:53And sure enough, they're right.
- 11:55You know, years later, I'm like, bro, I should have listened to you.
- 11:57But sometimes you just got to take the punches to realize it.
- 12:01So, I mean, like, if you're in the minority and you're able to take it a story like that and truly feel the pain and, like, just apply it to your life, kudos.
- 12:12But most people aren't.
