- 0:00Welcome everyone to the Becker health care podcast
- 0:02series. I'm Mohammed, Writer and Moderator with Becker
- 0:05Health care. My thrilled to have the me
- 0:07today, Amy Hendrix, Executive Director of Unit source
- 0:10Surgery Center. Amy very nice to have you
- 0:12on the podcast today. To get a started
- 0:13with you mind. Please introducing yourself, selling us
- 0:16a bit about your background?
- 0:18Yes. No problem. Thank you so much for
- 0:20allowing me this opportunity. I'm excited to be
- 0:23able to share a little bit.
- 0:25Yeah, I'm a nurse by background. I've spent
- 0:28my entire professional nursing career in peri services.
- 0:32As a nurse in the room as an
- 0:34educator as a manager in the hospital setting,
- 0:37then made the transition over into outpatient surgical
- 0:40services.
- 0:41And have been leading
- 0:43surgery centers
- 0:44for quite a while now, currently in the
- 0:46center that's 100 percent physician owned very or
- 0:49heavy
- 0:51total joint, heavy,
- 0:53and that's where I'm at.
- 0:55Wonderful. Wonderful. Thank you so much for giving
- 0:57us that background, and I've also very excited
- 1:00to speak with you today. So for starters,
- 1:02can you give us an overview of the
- 1:04biggest issues you're following in health care this
- 1:06year?
- 1:08Yes. I think there's a couple of things.
- 1:101 is the
- 1:13challenges we're having with the economic state of
- 1:17inflation and the rising cost of labor
- 1:20of supplies and materials
- 1:22of services,
- 1:24and
- 1:25then
- 1:26not seeing things move on the reimbursement side
- 1:29reimbursement with payers is not keeping up,
- 1:32to help us cover those costs. So having
- 1:33to get creative
- 1:35in ways to bridge that gap and looking
- 1:37at ways at either doing more
- 1:40volume in order to increase your revenue or
- 1:43keep your costs down that's certainly 1 of
- 1:45the biggest things that we're facing now in
- 1:4724.
- 1:50Another
- 1:51challenge that I really think is a big
- 1:54issue
- 1:56is tech... Has to do a technology
- 1:58and the risk of cybersecurity
- 2:01that in the As
- 2:04industry
- 2:04with our
- 2:06being behind in adopting Emr and that technology.
- 2:10We had been somewhat sheltered if you will
- 2:12from that kind of threat and challenge, but,
- 2:15you know, even of late, what's happened this
- 2:17week nationally,
- 2:19if not globally,
- 2:21with cyber
- 2:22threats and cybersecurity breaches.
- 2:25It's undeniable as more and more of our
- 2:28surgery centers integrate Emr and different types technology
- 2:32into their businesses,
- 2:33the threat of
- 2:35security and risks is real and something that
- 2:38we can't ignore and we've got to stay
- 2:40up on.
- 2:42Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. I completely agree, especially with
- 2:44the cybersecurity issue.
- 2:46I feel like Becker reports on cyber attack
- 2:49every day now, which is pretty insane.
- 2:52Is there anything that you're excited about or
- 2:54anything else that is making you nervous whether
- 2:56it's something you're dealing within the company?
- 2:58Or anything is seeing in the news?
- 3:01So
- 3:02I mentioned technology it's kind of a challenge
- 3:05or something that, you know, we think about
- 3:07and have to be planning for us far
- 3:09as risk and concern, but it also is
- 3:12exciting to think about and how technology
- 3:15is changing the way that we're delivering health
- 3:17care that we're reaching our patients that we're
- 3:19providing even education pre and post app.
- 3:24Technology in terms of robot and how that
- 3:28is being able now and affordable
- 3:31in our industry and in the As market
- 3:34and seeing it come into our centers and
- 3:36us be able to provide care with those
- 3:39things that I think can improve patient outcomes.
- 3:42The efficiency in the way that care is
- 3:44delivered, I think it's very, very exciting.
- 3:47Not just the robot technology, but other technologies
- 3:50such as software
- 3:51that allows us to engage with our patients,
- 3:54the way that
- 3:55consumers want
- 3:56information right now through texting and email and
- 3:59video and
- 4:01online portals and so forth,
- 4:03that's really exciting to see.
- 4:06I also think you know, post Covid,
- 4:09the
- 4:11way that consumers and providers have embraced
- 4:15outpatient surgery centers is an option.
- 4:18For surgical services and what we're seeing in
- 4:21the continual
- 4:23demand for surgery centers
- 4:26patients get exceptional care,
- 4:28great. We see that the outcomes are great,
- 4:31and we're able to do more and more
- 4:33in large part because of the technologies I
- 4:35mentioned, and that's also very, very exciting. It's
- 4:38great for our industry to see.
- 4:41Yeah. Yeah. Definitely, Bet makes complete sense.
- 4:45And at Amy before I let you go.
- 4:46The last thing I wanted to ask you
- 4:48is, well the most effective health leaders need
- 4:51in order to be successful, in the next
- 4:532 to 3 years do you think?
- 4:56Something that I'm constantly being challenged with myself,
- 4:59but
- 5:00really the need to be flexible and creative
- 5:03and forward thinking
- 5:06again, using
- 5:08being aware of technology
- 5:09the potential threat or risks that exist with
- 5:11that, but then also looking at ways that
- 5:13you can embrace that.
- 5:15And make your businesses more efficient
- 5:18and utilize that for the advantage of customer
- 5:21service and taking care of patients.
- 5:23Flexibility with
- 5:25staffing with we've come through the last couple
- 5:29years where the labor in labor market have
- 5:31been just tremendously challenging for especially for us
- 5:35that are in healthcare
- 5:37and looking at creative ways that we can
- 5:41staff our centers inc retain staff and recruit
- 5:43staff and
- 5:45know, we've looked at different things like for
- 5:47the first time engaging with our local community
- 5:49colleges
- 5:50in getting students in a possible base
- 5:53to recruit from here. So just
- 5:57always looking at how you can do things
- 5:59different,
- 6:01not that that's wrong, not being so rigid,
- 6:05and leaning on others to have that same
- 6:07mindset to try to
- 6:09think outside the box and just keep things
- 6:11moving.
- 6:13Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. Thank you so much for
- 6:15those final thoughts, Amy. This has definitely been
- 6:17informative discussion. So, again I wanna thank you
- 6:19so much for coming on Decker health karen
- 6:21and I look forward to connecting with you
- 6:22again soon.
- 6:23Thank you.
