- 0:00The vital nature is enamoured of experiences that are new and
- 0:04different, exciting, unusual. This is the allure of the vision
- 0:10quest, fasting and the use of entheogenic substances to bring
- 0:15forth experiences, visions, contact with alternative states
- 0:20of conscious awareness and alternative realities.
- 0:26Many techniques have been developed to encourage these
- 0:28experiences, including various psychophysical practices,
- 0:32breathing techniques, mantras and chanting, the use of mudras,
- 0:37bandas, trotak, devotional singing and dance, Sufi dancing,
- 0:43et cetera. Seeking experiences such as an
- 0:47out of body experience or a sense of the descent of a power
- 0:51into the body, the intense silencing of the mind, the
- 0:55experience of a deep peace or an ecstatic bliss.
- 1:02These experiences are exciting to the vital nature and the
- 1:05mind, and they speak to the sense of power, the sense of 1's
- 1:10own unique spiritual capacities, and in some cases, if not turned
- 1:16towards humility and gratitude, can accentuate the rising of a
- 1:21form of vital pride and even arrogance towards others.
- 1:26In the end, however, these experiences are either
- 1:30distracting to the effort or even misleading if one does not
- 1:34establish the foundation of the spiritual consciousness based in
- 1:39development of peace, quiet in the mind, and the turning of the
- 1:45spiritual aspiration to the Divine.
- 1:49When experiences come, and they generally do come as the higher
- 1:53consciousness descends and begins to manifest itself in the
- 1:57seeker, they can be a support and aid to the growth if they
- 2:02are based on this solid foundation and thus do not act
- 2:07to distract or mislead the seeker, but to guide, lead and
- 2:12help the seeker to realize and manifest the deeper truth for
- 2:16which he is aspiring. Sri Aurobindo notes quote
- 2:22Experience in the Sadhna is bound to begin with the mental
- 2:25plane. All that is necessary is that
- 2:28the experience should be sound and genuine.
- 2:32The pressure of understanding and will in the mind and the
- 2:36godward emotional urge in the heart are the two first agents
- 2:41of yoga. And peace, Purity and calm with
- 2:46a lulling of the lower unrest are precisely the first basis
- 2:51that has to be laid. To get that is much more
- 2:54important in the beginning than to get a glimpse of the Super
- 2:57physical worlds or to have visions, voices and powers.
- 3:03Purification and calm are the first needs in the yoga.
- 3:07One may have a great wealth of experiences of that kind,
- 3:10worlds, visions, voices, et cetera, without them.
- 3:14But these experiences, occurring in an unpurified and troubled
- 3:18consciousness, are usually full of disorder and mixture.
- 3:25At first the peace and calm are not continuous.
- 3:28They come and go, and it usually takes a long time to get them
- 3:32settled in the nature. It is better, therefore, to
- 3:36avoid impatience and to go on steadily with what is being
- 3:40done. If you wish to have something
- 3:43beyond the peace and calm, let it be the full opening of the
- 3:48inner being and the consciousness of the Divine
- 3:51power working in you. Aspire for that sincerely and
- 3:56with a great intensity, but without impatience, and it will
- 4:01come. End Quote.
