- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:12Please, I'm a star. Welcome to What's Your Least
- 0:17Favorite Scary Movie? The podcast where we talk about
- 0:19the good, the bad, the ugly and the absurd and all of our
- 0:22favorite and the least favorite scary movies.
- 0:24Because we believe every horror movie rightfully has its
- 0:26fanbase. Even if we don't always.
- 0:28Get it? My name is Travis.
- 0:29My name is Jesse. And welcome everybody, we are
- 0:32doing our Patreon voted episode this week on this show and you
- 0:36all let it be known that you want us to talk about Pearl.
- 0:40Pearl. So guess what?
- 0:41We're going to talk about Pearl. Yay.
- 0:45Two quick announcements. 1 is that as we were sitting down to
- 0:47record, I realized I mixed up the dates for Pearl and TV.
- 0:50Or not to be. I think anybody who's followed
- 0:53the show long enough should have recognized the format.
- 0:57Yeah, the format. And that leads me to my next
- 1:00announcement, which is that To be or Not to be came out this
- 1:02weekend. That's right.
- 1:03And it was covering a 2006 little saw RIP off called Are
- 1:08You Scared? Just go listen to us talk about
- 1:10it. It's seriously.
- 1:12It's a it's a show. It's OK.
- 1:16I mean, it's a show in the movie, yeah.
- 1:18It's a it's a fucking time. It's yeah.
- 1:20It's just there's a lot to talk about, so.
- 1:23And if you've seen it, you probably know exactly what we're
- 1:26talking about, right when we say that, yeah, it's a it's an
- 1:28experience. So yeah, it was a good one,
- 1:30though. I had fun with it.
- 1:31Right. Do we have a poll?
- 1:32We do OK. So last week we talked about
- 1:35smile and I went ahead and did who wins best smile?
- 1:40OK, so we had Carl, Laura, Doctor, Northcutt and Holly.
- 1:47Carl got zero. Nobody likes Carl's smile.
- 1:51I like Carl's smile. I feel bad for him because the
- 1:53only time we see him smile is when it's a smile.
- 1:55Damon making him smile. That's true.
- 1:57We. Don't see the poor boy actually
- 1:59smile for real. The rest of the time Laura was
- 2:0370%, Dang Dr. Northcott 10% and Holly 20%.
- 2:08Holly's, by the way, is the one where head.
- 2:10Hangs, yeah. Down which I thought that one
- 2:12would get a little bit more, but now 20% of the people.
- 2:15I. The one that always gets the
- 2:18biggest reaction on me is Doctor Northcott, so I'm.
- 2:21Going to say it here. That's that's kind of where I'm
- 2:23leaning too, because, you know, she's sitting there and she's
- 2:25like, shouldn't you answer that? Yeah.
- 2:27And we're like, uh oh, it's. The most sinister and unnerving
- 2:30one from that movie for me. You know, that's my vote.
- 2:34OK. All right, cool.
- 2:35Thanks, everybody for participating.
- 2:36I really appreciate that. All right, so let's talk about
- 2:41Pearl. So Pearl released September
- 2:4416th, 2022. We watched it on HBO Max.
- 2:48That's right. It's HBO Max again.
- 2:49Yeah, no longer Max. Just gave us just enough time to
- 2:53get used to calling it Max and they added the HBO back in.
- 2:57The rug right back put the rug back.
- 3:00They put the rug back. Under it, yeah, yeah, They got
- 3:02it back from Cintas. They sent back in the delivery
- 3:08track. So if you want to stream it, you
- 3:10have to watch it there at HBO Max, but you can always rent.
- 3:12It's from Amazon, Apple, or Fandango.
- 3:14At Home. Written by Ty West and Mia Goth,
- 3:18directed by Ty West, music by Tyler Bates and Tim Williams,
- 3:22and special effects makeup by Weta Workshop.
- 3:24All right. If I remember correctly, I think
- 3:27they were the people that did Krampus.
- 3:30What are they called? Weta Workshop.
- 3:32Weta. Let's see.
- 3:36It sounds familiar to me. They did Lord of the Rings
- 3:40apparently. Movies that.
- 3:42Makes sense cuz this is, yeah, a New Zealand movie.
- 3:44Avatar Heavenly Creatures, King Kong, Xena, Hercules.
- 3:52So I guess I misremembered them. Yeah, I guess it makes sense cuz
- 3:56they seem like they're fairly New Zealandy, which this was
- 4:03filmed in New Zealand, so that that makes sense.
- 4:06That tracks. Starring Mia Goth as Pearl,
- 4:10Tandy Wright as Ruth or Mom in this situation.
- 4:13Which fun fact about her, she was the intimacy coordinator on
- 4:17X. Oh, OK.
- 4:19And ended up getting the part for this movie, I guess because
- 4:21they needed fresh blood for, you know, some of the roles here.
- 4:24Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, I was also reading she
- 4:28were in German for the movie or just like I guess what she had
- 4:32to do in German. Yeah, at least Matthew
- 4:34Sutherland as Father, David Cornswett as projectionist and
- 4:40Emma Jenkins Perno as Mitzi. Mitzi almost said.
- 4:43Misty. OK, time for our favorite game
- 4:47on the show. Budget or budget, I think those
- 4:54this is bug Ted just because like that's how Tai W kind of
- 4:58rolls. Yeah, also a 24.
- 5:00Yeah. And as is tradition with a 24,
- 5:03they do not give figures on budget.
- 5:05So I do not have an answer for this, unfortunately, but we can
- 5:09probably accurately guess this is a bug, Ted.
- 5:11Yeah. Opening box office was
- 5:13$3,000,000. Worldwide gross 9.8 million.
- 5:18Wow. IMDb score 7.
- 5:20OK. Yeah, pretty high.
- 5:22I have 3 movies from 2022 to compare it to.
- 5:26And 2022, We talked about it last week with Smile.
- 5:29It was banger year. It was and I have a theme again.
- 5:33The theme for this one is that woman ain't right.
- 5:38Way harsh tie. Well, speak to Tie about that
- 5:41one because Tie made the movie and made the character 1st movie
- 5:47Barbarian. This is the woman in the
- 5:51basement. Yeah, the monster woman is not
- 5:54right in that movie. I mean, Richard Brake, I would
- 5:56say is the monster in that movie.
- 5:58But yeah, I guess Mama he. Is a monster.
- 6:01Is a monster like she's a monster of his creation.
- 6:03I think what I say is still true.
- 6:05She ain't right. There's something wrong about
- 6:07that woman that release like a week before Pearl.
- 6:12September 9th, 2022. Budget of 4.5 million worldwide.
- 6:16Gross 45,000,000. Also a 7 out of 10 on IMDb.
- 6:20OK movie #2 Orphan first kill. OK.
- 6:26Yeah. And that one was surprisingly
- 6:29good. I was not prepared for how much
- 6:31I was going to like that. Yeah, that's when that like I
- 6:34was like, can they pull that off?
- 6:35And God, they actually pulled. It off, yeah.
- 6:37It was a surprise. They surprised us, yeah.
- 6:40That released August 19th, 2022 on an $8 million budget, 37
- 6:45million gross. I did not know that that hit
- 6:48theaters. I thought that that was a
- 6:50Paramount Plus exclusive. No, I think we just ended up
- 6:52missing it in theaters because there were just too many movies
- 6:55to see all of them. That's true.
- 6:56There was a lot of shit, yeah. And we ended up watching it on
- 6:59Paramount. OK, all of these movies here
- 7:01were released in the same time frame pretty much.
- 7:03So they were all pretty much in theaters together that had a 5.9
- 7:07on IMDb. That's rude.
- 7:09Yeah, it's not like that bad, but I think that it's it's a
- 7:13better than a 5 point. Nine.
- 7:14Yeah, I mean, it's not as arty as Pearl and Smile, but no, it
- 7:19delivered on the goods. Not as arty as art wasn't
- 7:21terrified either. Also that.
- 7:23Yeah, and the final movie. Goodnight Mommy.
- 7:26This is the American remake. We have not seen this version.
- 7:30I have no desire to see it cuz I didn't like the Dutch version.
- 7:34Was it Dutch or German? I can't remember but I agree
- 7:36with you, I didn't really care for it either.
- 7:38It's yeah, it's just one of those news.
- 7:40I know a lot of people love it and it just doesn't do it for
- 7:43me. That released September 16th.
- 7:46Don't have the budget or the gross but it's a 5.7 on IMDb.
- 7:50OK, no got 1 tagline for this in the extraordinary origin story
- 7:57with X. Extraordinary, OK.
- 8:01That's a creative, yeah. Tagline.
- 8:03Yeah, that ties it in, you know. That's what tie do.
- 8:09He ties. Tie's gonna tie.
- 8:11OK, OK, this has made me never wanna talk about another Tie
- 8:15West movie on the show. Too bad he's got plenty of
- 8:19other. Ones, man, it's just like you're
- 8:22in an orchard and all the fruit roll out of the ground.
- 8:24Yeah. Man, it's been so long, man.
- 8:27We talked about X early on the show.
- 8:30Yeah, it's been a whale. Yeah.
- 8:32And we haven't talked about any of his other movies in between
- 8:35then, I don't think. Yeah, well, cuz I think what
- 8:38finally got you to put Pearl up for the vote on Patreon is cuz
- 8:42you want to talk about Maxine, and I'm refusing to talk about
- 8:45Maxine until we talk about Pearl, so.
- 8:46I agree with you other than I do want to talk about Maxine.
- 8:49That's one that people surprisingly hate that I like a
- 8:52lot. Yeah.
- 8:54It's weird. Curious to talk about this one
- 8:56with you based on how you feel about it before.
- 8:58So yeah, we'll get there. OK, so let's do some fun facts
- 9:01first before we get to that part.
- 9:03So First off, West and Goth, they began writing this while
- 9:08filming X. They actually wrote it during
- 9:10their two week incubation period where they were having to, you
- 9:14know. Isolate.
- 9:15Yeah, quarantine. It started off as like a
- 9:20potential back story given to her for Pearl and X because she
- 9:25also played Pearl and X, So you know, it's kind of like that.
- 9:27But then they saw a potential for it to actually be its own
- 9:29story. So it just kind of went from
- 9:31there and it ended up becoming its own prequel.
- 9:34It began filming immediately after X wrapped.
- 9:37They used the same sets as X and they even used the cast from or
- 9:43not cast crew from the Avatar film that was filming over there
- 9:46too who were during like they were having a break during their
- 9:50filming. So they're like fuck it, why
- 9:51not? Which I guess explains why we
- 9:53get wet. A workshop as the people that
- 9:55did this shit here. So he he says that he wanted to
- 10:01film this trilogy as like their own genres of war.
- 10:07So the first one heavily inspired by Texas Chainsaw
- 10:10Massacre and Mario Bava films and Pearl.
- 10:13He wanted it to be a melodrama and meeting the visual style of
- 10:17like the Technicolor movies like Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins.
- 10:20Oh the Wizard of Oz inspiration is so like heavily there
- 10:25throughout. Yeah, yeah, you can definitely
- 10:27see it. He said that he basically wanted
- 10:29this to become a demented Disney movie.
- 10:32I can see that. I could see it too, yeah.
- 10:35Or. If you or if you just want to go
- 10:36to the origins of a lot of Disney movies, just a Brothers
- 10:38Grimm very show. Usually they can't come from
- 10:41Mike Demintiteles. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:42They just kind of Disney 5 them up a little bit.
- 10:44And I mean, that's really all I got for like special fun facts
- 10:48here for this movie. Not a lot of, like deep things
- 10:50out there. It's just there's a neat little
- 10:53movie that they made while making another movie basically.
- 10:55Yeah, and I, I kind of like that, that they gave her like
- 10:58such a deep enough background that they're like, let's film
- 11:01some of this. We got the time we got.
- 11:03Like fuck, we got two weeks. Right.
- 11:04Yeah. Just like make a movie.
- 11:06We're already here. It's like COVID and you know,
- 11:10people were not doing shit during that time.
- 11:12So we used to do some shit. They were in New Zealand.
- 11:14They were in like the one safe place in the world.
- 11:16Yeah. I remember like that was the
- 11:18place where everybody could still do shit.
- 11:20That's because they had two week isolation periods.
- 11:22Yeah, they actually handled it properly, like right out the
- 11:25gate. Yeah.
- 11:26OK, so let's move on to good, bad, ugly and absurd.
- 11:29Then Jesse, you kick it off. Well, for a movie that was
- 11:34written in such a short time frame, I feel like it addressed
- 11:36a lot of things all at once because it addressed a lot of
- 11:40the isolation that came from a quarantine type situation, a
- 11:44pandemic situation. They're obviously drawing on
- 11:48their experiences with that. We had, you know, some of the
- 11:51challenges that Pearl's family was facing being from Germany in
- 11:57a time of the First World War. And they also dealt with like,
- 12:03you know, the thought that like, what if I'm meant to go on and
- 12:06do bigger, better things? I know I could do it if I just
- 12:08had the chance. And then feeling, am I trapped?
- 12:13Am I making the most out of what I have in life?
- 12:15Like, you know, I think that there were just a lot of things
- 12:19that this movie was addressing and it just makes you feel
- 12:23things without like being aggressively in your face other
- 12:28than pearls, like desperation for like.
- 12:30Yeah. Stardom.
- 12:32But I think that even comes from something even deeper down.
- 12:35It plays on a lot of things that like we can relate too easily.
- 12:37Yeah, yeah. For sure.
- 12:39And I just, I know you have opinions on this.
- 12:43I think Mia Goth's monologue there at the end is just
- 12:45fantastic. I've I've come around a little
- 12:47bit on this one, but I'll talk about it here in a little bit.
- 12:50Yeah, I think all of the performances were really good,
- 12:54really solid. And honestly, like I remembered
- 12:57this being a slower movie, but when we were watching it, it
- 12:59felt like things were happening quicker than I remembered them
- 13:02happening before. Yeah, this is our second watch.
- 13:05Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:06OK, yeah. So it's been a while since we
- 13:08saw. Them, yeah.
- 13:10So yeah, I just think overall it's really effective.
- 13:14OK, Yeah, For me, I I like the presentation of it and like the
- 13:18colorful classic look, like it very much does feel like a film
- 13:22from that era, even like, down to like the editing and like the
- 13:25music and everything like that. Yeah.
- 13:26Which I thought was a really nice touch.
- 13:29I thought. Yeah, the writing and acting of
- 13:32pearls, like psychotic behaviors were really, really interesting
- 13:35to watch. You know, just seeing her act
- 13:38that out. She's really good at playing
- 13:39that type of character. Yeah.
- 13:42I've seen her play mostly that type of character.
- 13:44I don't think I've seen her play a normal person once in my life.
- 13:47We need to watch the Suspiria remake cuz I know she's in that.
- 13:50It's probably weirdest fucking that too, honestly, but you're.
- 13:54Just being a little piss baby my.
- 13:58God, that's her most obnoxious. This movie is just, like a
- 14:01really, really good character study.
- 14:04Yeah, when it comes down to it, like, I like taking this
- 14:06character Pearl, and like, exploring how she became the way
- 14:10she was and ex because, like, I don't know, you kind of like,
- 14:13you can gather what happened to her and ex, you know, like, why
- 14:17she is the way she is. But like, to see it play out the
- 14:20way it did and like, take a deep dive on like, psychologically
- 14:24what her problems were and everything that she was having
- 14:26to deal with. And it kind of does make XA
- 14:30little bit more interesting as a result of that.
- 14:33Yeah. But yeah, it's like it's really
- 14:35compelling. And it weaves the themes of X
- 14:37really well into this too. Like, they.
- 14:39They are very cohesive. Yes.
- 14:41You know, Yeah. OK.
- 14:43So that's what you know, like. I mean, I don't know, I think we
- 14:53could have done a little less of the projectionist.
- 14:55I get why he's there. Like I get the give her hope
- 14:58about that. Yeah, give her hope.
- 14:59But. There's also like the travelling
- 15:01thing anyway, so you. Don't want to need that.
- 15:03Yeah like it's just, I feel like it kind of added on to it and I
- 15:07just. I don't.
- 15:08Cuz she already had the hope from like the audition.
- 15:10Yeah. So I'm saying yeah.
- 15:12And, you know, he was really there, like he was somebody that
- 15:15was taking advantage of her and it seemed like he was
- 15:17encouraging her, you know, whereas her mom was the exact
- 15:20opposite, like, you know, trying to keep her isolated because she
- 15:23recognizes something that's very wrong with Pearl.
- 15:25And she also doesn't believe in her dreams.
- 15:27So she's being kind of, you know, 2 separate ways she's
- 15:32being treated kind of the same. And I like, I get why that's
- 15:37important, but also like, I don't know, it's just we're
- 15:40going to watch her go through like a lot of psychologically
- 15:42anyway. I could have just died without
- 15:44him, like doing the full taking advantage.
- 15:47If you were like a more important role, I think it would
- 15:49have, yeah. I guess maybe he was there for
- 15:51her to like, have like that moment of weakness between her
- 15:55and like, Howard and something like, you know.
- 15:57But I feel like we could have gotten, like we could have had
- 16:00the same end result without him, you know?
- 16:02Yeah, you could have. Yeah.
- 16:03I mean, there's like plenty of other fucked up things she does
- 16:05that could probably get Howard going.
- 16:07Blah. OK, Yeah.
- 16:12What about you? OK, so this is I think the heart
- 16:16of why I didn't really enjoy this movie whenever I first
- 16:18watched it. And I kind of like had a chance
- 16:20to really think about it this time, watching it again.
- 16:24So you go from X, which is like, you know, a horror movie, like
- 16:26it's a fucking slasher and like goes hard into that.
- 16:29And it's a really good one at that.
- 16:32And then you immediately take it to this and this movie, I would
- 16:36hardly even call it a horror movie.
- 16:38This is a drama. It's it's not really horror.
- 16:42There are like some scary things happen.
- 16:44But you know what that happens in drama movies all the time,
- 16:47dramatic things, people dying, you know, wanting to like a
- 16:50bigger grander life, you know, people killing people.
- 16:53That's not like like inherently exclusive to horror.
- 16:56It's also a thing that happens in drama films.
- 16:59And this movie is, it's a drama, it's not a horror movie.
- 17:03There's nothing really like that plays on like suspense or shit
- 17:07like that the entire time. So that was a let down for me
- 17:11because you know, I loved X so much and I just, I wanted more
- 17:15of that and I just got the exact opposite of that and stuff.
- 17:20And as a result, I don't know, I feel like the movie doesn't
- 17:23really feel like a prequel. It just kind of feels like a
- 17:25companion piece, you know? Like, I don't think that there's
- 17:28like, enough substance for it to really be a prequel.
- 17:30Like, OK, she was the way she was.
- 17:33So like, I don't know, like she was the exact same character as
- 17:36her, like a Mia Goss character. And I can't remember her name.
- 17:40No. Maxine, of course.
- 17:41Yeah, She was. I mean, it was just Maxine, but
- 17:44just, like, take her back into the 1920s.
- 17:47OK. That's it.
- 17:48You know, Like, yeah. It was 1918.
- 17:52Whatever, whatever, you know, it's just wasn't necessary.
- 17:57Nah and it didn't really do the things that I really wanted it
- 18:01to be. So that was really the
- 18:03shortcomings for me with this one.
- 18:05OK. OK, so ugly.
- 18:10Yeah, I guess. I guess you know, some of what
- 18:20their farm is going through just because they are German in the
- 18:24time of the First World War and it's like hurting their
- 18:28livelihood and everything because nobody wants to buy from
- 18:30German farmers right now, even though they're they're living in
- 18:33Texas, you know? Yeah, and like, I don't know,
- 18:36just like make make Pearl like the the face of the farm.
- 18:39That way she's like the least German person there.
- 18:41She's so southern. And then also like, man, it's
- 18:45really hard watching them trying to care for her dad because
- 18:53there are a lot of times where they talk about him like he's
- 18:55not there. Yeah, he's he's.
- 18:58And it seems like he is aware of what's being said, he just can't
- 19:02really react to the things other than looking fucking terrified
- 19:05most of the time. I'm sorry I'm skipping into my
- 19:08absurd here, but it's relevant. He's the ultimate third will.
- 19:12He is just as there as like an observer for everything.
- 19:14Nobody acknowledges him. Everybody has like their own
- 19:17shit that happens in front of him and then he just doesn't
- 19:20participate. He can't.
- 19:21But like they don't even like acknowledge him.
- 19:24And I think it was meant to be that he, they kind of hinted at
- 19:27it, but I think he was meant to have contracted the flu, the
- 19:31Spanish flu that they were, you know, dealing with at that time.
- 19:34And that's why he is left the way he is.
- 19:38And that's why her mom is especially paranoid about
- 19:40masking up and isolating and everything.
- 19:43Germs, like bringing in outside objects.
- 19:46Yeah, yeah. The ugly thing for me is like,
- 19:50like, I get the hardship that they're going through, but like,
- 19:52the mother's like, suppressive raising that she does her Pearl.
- 19:55It's almost like abusive. Yes, whenever.
- 19:57I mean, like she said that she spent some of the money for
- 20:00candy. OK, you don't eat dinner now.
- 20:02Like, what the fuck? That's ridiculous.
- 20:04Like candy is not like going to be enough for anything, even if
- 20:09she was telling the truth in that moment.
- 20:12And also just like Pearl, this whole like path of becoming
- 20:15herself, like she like has a glimpse of like, OK, this is
- 20:18what I can be. So, like, all right, here's a.
- 20:20You know, we'll start off with like me killing some animals and
- 20:24innocent goose man over here, and then we're going to get like
- 20:27death cheating and then just like abandoning her dad and shit
- 20:30like that. And it's just like, yeah, it's,
- 20:33it's really, it's disturbing to see unfold.
- 20:37Yes, absolutely. OK, absurd.
- 20:41Absurd. Pearl for being a psychopath is
- 20:45a really bad liar. She's so terrible.
- 20:49So she's a bad liar. And it's just, it's actually
- 20:52kind of funny to watch. Like she says, oh, my dog is
- 20:55just making sounds downstairs and 30 seconds later she's
- 20:57introducing all of the animals and he's like, what's your dog's
- 21:00name? She says we're not a dog.
- 21:01Idiot dog. And she's like, oh, you said?
- 21:03And like she didn't even like, oh, right, sorry.
- 21:06We don't call him dog. We call him Puppy, you know.
- 21:08And they just said say. Something stupid like that.
- 21:11She's a bad liar. Yeah, she's really bad about him
- 21:15for me. I mean, I think like the most
- 21:16obvious one is the Scarecrow fucking scene.
- 21:20Yeah, like. AI could do without that as
- 21:22well, like. OK, it's just like, man, OK,
- 21:28weird. Whatever do you think, Miga?
- 21:32You know, if you want to fuck that scarecrow on screen, you do
- 21:34it, girl. You got it again.
- 21:39What do you rate it? I think I'd give it an A 8.
- 21:42OK, I thought you had rated this a lot higher.
- 21:44I thought you really enjoyed this movie a lot more.
- 21:47I feel like 8 is a decently high rating.
- 21:49I feel like it's pretty good. No, I'm I'm just saying, I
- 21:51thought you were like really high on this movie.
- 21:53I didn't know. OK all.
- 21:54Right, like I think it's a good movie.
- 21:56This is more what I expected from Ty.
- 21:58WX was a surprise for me that it moved as fast as it did.
- 22:02Yeah, I mean, I like slow burns, you know?
- 22:05And like, I did enjoy this movie, but like, yeah, I mean,
- 22:10whenever I'm watching Ty W, I'm also expecting some horror.
- 22:13OK. What do you rate it?
- 22:15A5 I don't hate it. I like did more of this watch
- 22:19honestly than I did the first watch but I knew what I was
- 22:22getting this time instead of, you know, hoping for like X Part
- 22:252. I will say that I think that
- 22:27this is probably my least favorite in the trilogy then.
- 22:32That's not to say that it's a bad movie, just.
- 22:34Yeah, yeah. No, I don't.
- 22:36I don't think this is a bad movie.
- 22:37I just don't think it's a good horror movie.
- 22:38I think it's like a good drama. OK, really.
- 22:41But I'm rating as like a horror movie here cuz that's what it is
- 22:45kind of trying to be I think based off of what he said.
- 22:48All right, so we've got a starting average of 6.5.
- 22:50All right, let's get into it. I will say that I love that the
- 22:54first opening shot is the same as the opening shot in X.
- 22:57Oh my God, I love. That, that's such a nice touch.
- 22:59Yeah. We see Pearl is dancing in her
- 23:02room in her mom's old dress. Her mom interrupts, and she is
- 23:06not cool with Pearl taking her dress.
- 23:08She's like, that was my nice dress from when I was a girl in
- 23:10Germany. We are farmers now.
- 23:13No dresses. Yeah.
- 23:14Go to the barn. Yeah, so Pearl is feeding the
- 23:17animals, and she confides of them.
- 23:19She says that she's special. I'm special.
- 23:23There's going to be some day that you guys aren't going to
- 23:25see me again. And then a goose walks in and
- 23:27she's like, what's that Mister goose?
- 23:29And then just fucking stabs it and feeds it to feed at the
- 23:32crocodile. Why?
- 23:33Why was she I? I guess I could get it.
- 23:36She's just a psychopath. I there was no reason to it.
- 23:39I just walked in there at the wrong time and she just decided
- 23:42to kill it. It was just being a happy little
- 23:44goose. It's like, hey man, look at me.
- 23:46I'm like an amphibian bird. I.
- 23:48Have a question? So is that the same crocodile?
- 23:52Like do crocodiles have that lifespan to like go like nearly
- 23:55100 years? No, it was in the 70's.
- 23:58The ex was set in the 70s, right?
- 24:00Yes, but that is a very good question.
- 24:03We did see Theta laid eggs, so it could be one of Theta's
- 24:06babies, but let's look it up the.
- 24:08Junior. Crocodile lifespan, 25 to 70
- 24:13years. So it could be, could be.
- 24:15Yeah. OK.
- 24:16We have no way of knowing. No.
- 24:18I mean, I guess we could ask Ty West, but.
- 24:20That that crocodile was pretty spry and X it was moving in a
- 24:24pretty good quip. Well, she keeps it well fit,
- 24:27she. Does all right so we see yeah
- 24:291918 you're correct the so her mom is forbidding dancing we're
- 24:35setting a very. Selfish and selfish to dance.
- 24:39And she's honestly pretty swept if it was.
- 24:42Here. In this world.
- 24:44She's going to ban dancing. So especially now that all the
- 24:47farm hands are gone, the farm hands have all gone off to fight
- 24:50the war. One of them is Pearl's husband,
- 24:52Howard, who comes from a rich family, but he doesn't care
- 24:55about being rich. He wants to be just a man of the
- 24:59world, which is not what Pearl expected from him.
- 25:03How dare he? Yeah.
- 25:05He didn't know, like we could have gotten him out of the draft
- 25:07and he's like, no, I want to do it.
- 25:08Yeah. How?
- 25:09Dare he? I'm going to do it just to spot
- 25:11my dad. Yeah.
- 25:12So they see in the newspaper both, like, mention of the
- 25:16Spanish flu, and the Allies are now in France.
- 25:21So Pearl's like, hey, maybe the war is going to end soon.
- 25:26And then Ruth is just like, go get your dad for dinner.
- 25:30So after dinner, she is she has cleaned her dad and she's going
- 25:35to bathe in front of him. Yeah, I don't know if this is
- 25:39just like a cultural thing. I mean it's strange to me, but
- 25:41maybe German people in the 19 eighteens.
- 25:44Era. Maybe I'm.
- 25:46Cool with it, you know, I don't know.
- 25:47I don't really know, but she reads the letter that she got
- 25:50from Howard to her dad. I think if if it were bad, her
- 25:53mom would have definitely been. Like.
- 25:55Angry about it, but her mom walks in on the whole.
- 25:58Thing and she's just like, I'm just trying not to waste the hot
- 26:00water. Yeah, and she's.
- 26:02Also talking to her dad about how she gets to go to town
- 26:04tomorrow to get more medicine and she's going to go see the
- 26:06dancers and the pictures when she goes to town, but we're not
- 26:09going to tell mom. Right.
- 26:11Yeah. So yeah, she heads into town,
- 26:15she stops and gets the medicine, but then right across the
- 26:18street, it's the movie theater. So she goes on in there.
- 26:21She watches Palace with Follies and drinks some of her dad's
- 26:24cough syrup. She's on a missing bed.
- 26:27No. Are you scared?
- 26:27I'm just. Going to go on and write a
- 26:30straight to the DVD horror movie called Are You Scared?
- 26:32Uh huh. Yep.
- 26:34And she gets out of there and she starts to go, but then she
- 26:38sees the alleyway over there and there's a man just over in the
- 26:42alleyway and she's like. Oh, there was one thing.
- 26:45I made a note of this in the movie.
- 26:47Oh yeah, the dancers at one point are dancing to a song
- 26:50called Wee Wee Marie when Pearl starts killing an ex.
- 26:54Remember, she does that little dance in front of the Vans
- 26:57headlights. Yeah.
- 26:58Is that what it? Is it's a cover of Wee Wee
- 26:59Marie? Yeah, it's interesting.
- 27:02Yeah. Wow.
- 27:02Good cat. So it's like a little nice
- 27:04little pie in. I'm impressed you caught that.
- 27:06Honestly, I would have never thought to look that hard into
- 27:08it. Just having to catch it, yeah.
- 27:13Just fucking good, man, what can I say?
- 27:16So, yeah, in the only way. She strikes up the conversation
- 27:18with the projectionists, and he gives her a film strip.
- 27:22He's like, hey, by the way, you can come here anytime.
- 27:24I'll live here. This is my house.
- 27:25Yeah. He cuts his cell out of the real
- 27:28and she's like, isn't that gonna mess up the picture?
- 27:29And he goes. It's one frame.
- 27:31It's true, it's not going to do that much damage to it.
- 27:34Yeah, So she tucks it barely into her overall bib.
- 27:38I guess, like poking out. This was.
- 27:39She was just asking for trouble. And exactly what happens is that
- 27:42she's driving home our old bicycle again.
- 27:45Very. Dorothy coded.
- 27:46Yeah. And the cell flies out.
- 27:49She goes way too far into the cornfield to try and find it.
- 27:52I would look, I would start on the road.
- 27:54Yeah, she's just like, all right, Scarecrow.
- 27:58Like, yeah, she's a little overcorrection here.
- 28:01Yeah, and she's, I feel like she's not looking at the ground
- 28:03enough. She's not.
- 28:04She's just like, I don't know, she's not right in the head, OK?
- 28:08That woman ain't right, like I said.
- 28:11So she finds the scarecrow. I would be terrified of the
- 28:14scarecrow. I thought scarecrow's from
- 28:15supposed to be made out of burlap sacks.
- 28:18Who carved this face? Dude, I was expecting it was
- 28:21like this thing can come to life, like it's going to start
- 28:23moving. Is it a person in my view?
- 28:25I was like, is this an actual dead man?
- 28:27Yeah, it was very well done. I if I was a crow, I wouldn't be
- 28:32anywhere near that field, no. Fuck that scarecrow.
- 28:34Yeah, that is a scarecrow. She's just like, you know, super
- 28:39enamored by it, too. I guess it has the opposite
- 28:41effect on her. And she climbs up to it.
- 28:44Yeah, she's horny. She just had, like, this sweet
- 28:46little projectionist man. Give her a film strip.
- 28:48So yeah. She's picturing herself dancing.
- 28:50She's. Picturing his face on it, yeah.
- 28:52And then she screams that she's married.
- 28:55Yeah, she snaps on it. Yeah.
- 28:56She gets. She pins it to the ground and
- 28:58fucks it. Yeah, so she gets home and her
- 29:02mom is still grumpy. Her dad is still unresponsive
- 29:07and she, you know, she takes her bath once again.
- 29:11This is a fucked up thing here. Like when she's doing the bath
- 29:14though, she like she's talking to her dad about the movie, but
- 29:16then she like, wants to test if he can actually just like react
- 29:19to anything. So she just like, puts her hand
- 29:21on there and pinches him as hard as she can and just like looks
- 29:24at his face to see what kind of reaction he gets.
- 29:26That's fucking psychotic. Yeah, it's bad.
- 29:31So at dinner, her mom wants her change.
- 29:33She said it's $0.08. I know how to count Pearl.
- 29:36And she goes, well, I got some candy for the ride back and she
- 29:39goes, cool. So no dinner for you.
- 29:40She goes please, I rode all that while on my bike and I'm hungry
- 29:42and she goes, you can eat in the morning.
- 29:45So Pearl goes up to her bed and she prays that God will let her
- 29:49be the biggest star. So the next day ish, maybe it's
- 29:56not the next day, maybe it's a few days later, whatever.
- 29:58Either way, Mitzi visits with her mom.
- 30:00Those are her in laws. They kind of have a relationship
- 30:03to the family. Ruth is not going to take
- 30:06handouts. Mitzi's family is finally
- 30:08starting to recover some from the war.
- 30:10They feel like they've been in isolation enough from the flu,
- 30:14from the pandemic. So they're going to go out and
- 30:16about because again, they're rich, so pandemics don't affect
- 30:19them the same way. They're bringing people pigs.
- 30:21Whole pigs. I like their.
- 30:24I like this. In the background, we'll talk
- 30:26about what Pearl and Mitzi are talking about in a second, but
- 30:28in the background we hear Mitzi's mom just go.
- 30:30It's a pig. Ruth didn't.
- 30:32Hear. That it's great cuz we'll see
- 30:36you later. Ruth will not bring in that pig.
- 30:38She will not accept this charity, this handout, even
- 30:40though they are actually tied at this point because of Howard.
- 30:44Yeah, it gets gross too. Yeah.
- 30:46And so Pearl and Mitzi are talking.
- 30:49And, you know, Mitzi was just talking about how they could
- 30:51have gotten Howard out of the draft and but that's that's her
- 30:54brother for you. And then she says that there is
- 30:57an auditioning happen at the church on Saturday for.
- 31:01Yeah, for. It's for a travel and dance
- 31:03troupe who's going to travel all around Texas.
- 31:04She's like, I really kind of want to go audition, but I don't
- 31:07think my mom will be into it. And Pearl's like, I want to,
- 31:09too. So they decide sisters in law
- 31:11need to stick together. They're going to go audition in
- 31:13secret together. Yeah.
- 31:15So we see Pearl, she goes upstairs and she notices her mom
- 31:21and her dad are out there preoccupied, so she's gonna
- 31:23sneak into the mom's room to get another dress out.
- 31:26And it's not like she's got enough dresses that she won't
- 31:28notice. Yeah, right.
- 31:30I mean, I don't know, maybe she seems like she would be like
- 31:32super like anal about that stuff, like.
- 31:34Yeah. Does inventory every night.
- 31:36It seems like if they were really as hard off as they are,
- 31:39she could go sell her nice dresses for like.
- 31:42And I'm not saying that you have to give up everything that you
- 31:44love and cherish. It's just that Ruth has said
- 31:47before that there's no time for foolishness and nonsense and
- 31:50sentimentality. So why is she holding on to
- 31:52those dresses her? Entire philosophy is entire
- 31:54time. It's like it's not about what we
- 31:55want, all right? Oh, you don't want that dress?
- 31:58You want that dress. It's not about that anymore.
- 31:59Ruth, sell that shit. Yeah.
- 32:01And like, my thing is, if Ruth was a little bit more flexible,
- 32:03I'd be like, she should get to hold on to something that's
- 32:05meaningful and important to her, and we shouldn't have to sell
- 32:07our lives away just to survive. But that's not how Ruth has been
- 32:10talking to Pearl. No.
- 32:13So she sneaks. One of her dresses is the short
- 32:16version of this, and she also has a scarecrow's top hat.
- 32:18She sneaks out wearing it and she goes to visit the
- 32:21projectioness and she's just telling them all about this
- 32:25audition that she wants to do. And he's like, you should do it.
- 32:29You seem like you'd be really good at it.
- 32:30Do you want to watch this porno with me?
- 32:33This guy, he has like a. He's like, I got it in France.
- 32:37Yeah, he knows what he's doing here.
- 32:38Yeah. You could be a girl.
- 32:40You could be in the movies like this one right here.
- 32:42I'm about to show you. And then he, like, shows her
- 32:44like a porno. These were like illegal in the
- 32:46United States back there, but apparently they were legal in
- 32:48Europe. So he hasn't been able to show
- 32:51this to anybody. And I think it's really
- 32:52interesting when you take this into account with the whole
- 32:55trilogy. So he's sitting there saying
- 32:57that he's going to get in on this market early.
- 32:59Yeah, I was thinking about that. Too.
- 33:00Yeah. And that ties very big into X,
- 33:03how they're saying that this is going to be, you know, a good
- 33:06way to make it big. Those make artistic pornography.
- 33:12And then we cut over to Maxine, where she was like, I'm doing
- 33:15this to get my foot in the acting door, and I want to do
- 33:17actual, real news. It's kind of interesting seeing
- 33:19that. Progression.
- 33:20Yeah, yeah, throughout the time. So like how people reacted to
- 33:23this this like this genre is interesting.
- 33:28And she, she says, you know, she talks about feeling trapped
- 33:31because she told him before that like, her dad is not able to
- 33:34take care of himself. And so she feels like she has to
- 33:36stay and help him. And her mom is very overbearing.
- 33:39And she's like, I just wish sometimes because I feel like it
- 33:41would be easier if they're dead. And he goes, what?
- 33:43And she goes nothing. Red flag right away my.
- 33:47Man, like, and she's like, all right, I'm going to go.
- 33:50And when she gets home, she hears her mom crying.
- 33:53Her mom's real stressed. Yeah, I think it would help her
- 33:56mom if she acted a little bit more human every once in a while
- 33:58with. Compassion.
- 34:00You know, if you give Pearl some compassion, maybe she'll feel
- 34:02inclined to do the same to you. But Pearl just sees her crash.
- 34:05She's like, good. She's like, closes the door.
- 34:07She feels too. Thank God.
- 34:10So Pearl takes her dad outside to go see Theta, and she's just
- 34:14kind of talking about like, yeah, you're just trapped in
- 34:16there. I wonder if it'd be easier for
- 34:18you to not just be trapped. And then Ruth, like, falls
- 34:21around there and she's like, what the fuck are you doing?
- 34:23She goes. I'm just getting him fresh air.
- 34:25Yeah, right in front of the crocodile.
- 34:27You know, like inches away from him.
- 34:30So she lectures her about making the most of your situation.
- 34:35She finds a nest of Theta's eggs, and she just takes one and
- 34:40she's gonna go hide it in the loft.
- 34:42And one of the cows looks at her very disapprovingly, and she's
- 34:45like, you know what? You're right.
- 34:46It's Charlie. It's Charlie.
- 34:48Yeah, Charlie was her biggest supporter, and now Charlie is.
- 34:50Charlie's like you've got that egg, and so Pearl goes up there
- 34:53and does what you do, which is crush it while thinking of your
- 34:56husband who's overseas fighting a war.
- 34:57Good. This is gross seeing that.
- 35:02So what dinner? Ruth reveals that she has found
- 35:05the Playbill for Palace of Follies, and she tells Pearl
- 35:10that she needs to isolate herself until they can be sure
- 35:13that she's not I'll, because Ruth cannot risk getting sick.
- 35:17And then Pearl is like, listen, there is an audition on Saturday
- 35:23and I'm very bad at timing for asking for things.
- 35:26I'm going to go to this audition.
- 35:28If I don't make it, I will never do this again.
- 35:31That's not the right attitude to having show business.
- 35:33You're going to get far more rejections than you get
- 35:34acceptances. Yeah, well, Pearl's not Steve.
- 35:37Yeah. Mom, her mom is like harsh, but
- 35:41also kind of like, I think this is the reality trick that Pearl
- 35:44probably needed here. She's like.
- 35:45We was finally breaking down. Yeah, she's like, look, Pearl,
- 35:47like you're not going to do it. You're not going to like they're
- 35:50going to notice. They're going to see who you
- 35:52are. And she's like, I've been there.
- 35:54I've seen the things that you thought you were one, and you
- 35:56will scare people. You scare me.
- 35:59And she's clearly talking about like the killings and shit like
- 36:01that and. They start fighting and like
- 36:04they're standing up, like actually going at it.
- 36:06But Ruth's dress gets caught on the fire, and she.
- 36:10Must have been covered in like flammable Wick liquid or
- 36:13something because she just like goes all up in flames her.
- 36:16Pearl puts the water, puts the fire out with boiling.
- 36:18Water, I know. Oh my God, What?
- 36:21A bitch. That felt almost intentional.
- 36:26Like I wish they had shown like a pitcher of water right next to
- 36:29the vine. Just like her, like going back
- 36:31and forth, like which one do I grab?
- 36:32Boiling water. Yeah, and then she just dumps
- 36:37her down in the root cellar. Just fucking throws her down
- 36:40there. Yeah.
- 36:40And then like the dad is watching the entire time with,
- 36:43like, this horrified. Yeah, he's like.
- 36:45Just like a tear just going down his cheek.
- 36:48God I feel so bad for this man. Oh my God.
- 36:51It's awful. So she runs off.
- 36:53Pearl runs off to go see the projectionist, and it's implied
- 36:57that they do sex. Oh yeah, Because she wakes in
- 37:00his bed and her underclothes and she's like, oh God, I gotta go
- 37:05the auditions today. He's like, it's not even 6 yet.
- 37:07And she's like, I gotta go make sure my auditions perfect.
- 37:09He's like, well, at least let me drive you home.
- 37:11He's a bohemian, but he's got a car.
- 37:14This guy, I don't like this guy. Yeah, I know.
- 37:16He just seems oily, you know? So he's giving her a ride home,
- 37:20and as her drive in, she sees a soldier walking on his way back.
- 37:24So is that Howard? Is that?
- 37:26I don't know. There's a sign that maybe Howard
- 37:27might be coming home soon. Yeah, it's just I don't think
- 37:30that's Howard. I know she, I think she was like
- 37:32thinking that though, like maybe that's.
- 37:33Howard like they're going to start having soldiers coming
- 37:36home soon. So they get there and she's
- 37:39like, wait out here for a second and she goes in and she cleans
- 37:44up around the house a little. Bit so we have some next to the
- 37:46fucking pig that's swarmed. Yeah, lies.
- 37:48And maggots. So he's just like staring at it.
- 37:50So gross. Oh my God, that's so gross.
- 37:53And then when she's got so straightened up a little bit,
- 37:55she introduces him to her dad. And then she's like show him
- 37:59around. She gets so much of his room and
- 38:01her room and starts trying to make out with him.
- 38:03He's like, there's a something sound and she's like, hold on.
- 38:07So she runs downstairs, looks at her mom, says, I hope you
- 38:11remember this, and then shoves her back down the stairs again.
- 38:14And he comes downstairs and he sees, like, the corn on the
- 38:16ground. And he's like, ah.
- 38:18And she goes, it's my dog. He's getting into stuff.
- 38:20So I had to put him in the roots.
- 38:21I like, come on, I'm going to go introduce you to all of our farm
- 38:24animals. And she says she names them
- 38:27after all of, like, the Hollywood starlets.
- 38:30And he goes, what's your dog's name?
- 38:31She's. We don't have a dog.
- 38:32Yeah. What fuck you talking?
- 38:34About yeah, I'm like, dog what? Yeah, and this is when he's,
- 38:37like, getting bad vibes, Like, all right, well, I'm a bohemian,
- 38:40so I got to hit the road. And she's like, what did I do?
- 38:43What's wrong? Why don't you like me?
- 38:46And he's like, I just got to go and you've got your audition and
- 38:51she just follows after him with pitchfork and just book and
- 38:54stabs him and. Eventually he's like, you're
- 38:56scaring me. What do you mean?
- 38:57It's kind of scary. He should.
- 38:58Have gone a lot faster. He really should.
- 39:00He should have, yeah. So.
- 39:02And we see, I guess this is the beginning of like, oh, so we can
- 39:05store cars in the lake or the pond.
- 39:08We're just going to do that now. This is a good way to get rid of
- 39:10vehicles. Cleans up her dad and dresses
- 39:13him in a nice suit. He is still crying, which is the
- 39:18right call because she is in fact putting him in his funerary
- 39:21suit. Yep, because she she smothers
- 39:24him. She pushes the projectionist in
- 39:26his car into the pond and then she rides off on her bike with
- 39:30her suitcases enough for her to take to hit the road
- 39:33immediately. I.
- 39:34Like that, she's like, they're going to take me in and I'm just
- 39:36going to be with them for the rest of my life.
- 39:38Like when she's. Ready.
- 39:39It's like now, like, no, we'll do this like in a couple of
- 39:42days. All right, So she's at the
- 39:44audition. And she's chatting with Mitzi as
- 39:47they're waiting, and Mitzi's a little bit put off by her energy
- 39:50because it's a little bit too intense, because she's selfish,
- 39:52too. She's like, I gotta make this
- 39:54matter what. And Mitzi's like, yeah, I'd
- 39:55really like to make it, too. And Pearl's like I have to be
- 39:57the one. Like, well, if it's not me, then
- 39:59Natalie, it's you. And she's like, no, just me.
- 40:01Yeah, damn. And she's so nervous that she
- 40:04makes Pearl switch with her. So Pearl goes in and she
- 40:06auditions first and. Like the number that they did
- 40:09with this, like how it like turns into like a whole play
- 40:12basically with like the backdrop of like the World War going on.
- 40:15But it does make you wonder what the dance looked like without
- 40:17those extras there, cuz a lot of it would just be like her
- 40:20twirling around in a large circle.
- 40:22Again, going back to It's Always Sunny, very much probably.
- 40:24Like, yeah. Yeah.
- 40:29And yeah, they pass. They're not really looking for
- 40:32her type. They're looking for more blonde,
- 40:35you know. Someone younger blonder.
- 40:39Got that? She's like, it's like you're
- 40:41missing The X Factor. And she's like, please, I'm a
- 40:45star. She is inconsolable outside.
- 40:49Yeah, guy, like people in the next neighborhood are here in
- 40:51that show. She must have been crying for
- 40:54like hours. She's got a headache.
- 40:58She's dehydrated. It's that ugly SOB.
- 41:02Yeah. When when you're like a kid and
- 41:04your mom told you you can't have that thing, but you cried
- 41:06really, really fucking hard because you wanted it.
- 41:09She's just, it's terrible. So Mitzi takes her home and
- 41:12she's trying to cheer her up. She's like, hey, I'm do you want
- 41:15some milk? I'm going to get you some milk.
- 41:17She's a psychopath. She's like, oh, that'd be
- 41:19perfect. Thank you.
- 41:20Yes. Mitzi has clocked their rotted
- 41:22pig outside. She's like, well, that's kind of
- 41:24rude, you know? And she she's just trying to
- 41:28talk to her. She was like, hey, what's up?
- 41:31And Pearl was like, I just feel like something's missing.
- 41:33And she goes like what? And she goes, I haven't ever
- 41:35talked to anybody about it, not even Howard.
- 41:37She goes, well, you should be able to Howard anything.
- 41:39He's your husband. She's like, I just don't even
- 41:41know if I could. And she goes, OK, we'll pretend
- 41:42I'm Howard. And then this is where we get
- 41:44this beautiful like 10 minute monologue from me and Goth.
- 41:47Yeah, I wasn't a big fan the first time I watched it.
- 41:50I I was a little bit more compelled this time.
- 41:51I checked out the first time. Like it wasn't because I was
- 41:54just like, fuck this movie. It's just like, I don't know, it
- 41:56was like, no, it just kind of bored me.
- 41:59Like, she's just talking about, like, you know, she always felt
- 42:02like she was destined for something more than that life on
- 42:04the farm. And she pinned all of her hopes
- 42:07and dreams on that. And there's also something else
- 42:10weird with her where she just doesn't ever seem to feel bad
- 42:13about doing bad things, so she keeps doing them.
- 42:15She's mad at Howard because like, you know, Howard was like,
- 42:18you know. Supposed to be her way out.
- 42:20Yeah, but then you like, trapped her there by going off to the
- 42:23war and stuff. Yeah.
- 42:25And then and she's just basically revealed everything
- 42:28that we've talked about in this movie so far.
- 42:29And Missy's like. And then some she's like also
- 42:32talking about like, you know, it first started like I was killing
- 42:34things. It felt good.
- 42:35Felt like powerful, you know, And then, you know, eventually
- 42:39like just killing other people just kind of felt natural after
- 42:42a certain point. Real psychopath shit.
- 42:44So, Pearl, thanks here for listening.
- 42:46She's like, thank you for that. You're not going to tell
- 42:48anybody, are you? And she's like, no, no, I do
- 42:51need to go. There she goes.
- 42:52Well, congratulations. And Missy's like she goes.
- 42:58I'm getting the part because Pearl has decided because Mitzi
- 43:01is younger and blonder and that obviously means she got the
- 43:03part. I'm curious what you think.
- 43:07I'm of the camp that Mitzi didn't actually get the part,
- 43:10she just agreed with Pearl because she was trying to get
- 43:12out of there. No, that's what I thought too.
- 43:14OK. Cuz like she insisted she's
- 43:15like, I didn't get it. And then eventually you can kind
- 43:17of see she's like, OK, yeah, thanks.
- 43:20Sure. Yeah, so Mitzi tries to leave
- 43:26and Pearl follows very quickly with an axe.
- 43:30Yeah, I like that shot where she just slowly follows her with the
- 43:34axe and yeah, just chases her and axes her down.
- 43:38Yeah. And then we have this, like,
- 43:41montage because she goes down to the basement and kind of crawls
- 43:44in her mom's arms. Her mom's dead at this point,
- 43:47but she's picturing her mom singing to her a German lullaby.
- 43:50And as she's hearing this, she's like cleaning up the house,
- 43:53chopping up Mitzi's body and feeding her to Theta.
- 43:56She's like grooming the corpses and putting them at the dinner
- 43:59table. Setting the rodded pig at the
- 44:00dinner table. It's all really disgusting.
- 44:04She doesn't wash her hands at all.
- 44:06She's covered in blood. She fully embraces.
- 44:08She's a disgusting person at this point.
- 44:10And then she stands there for two weeks.
- 44:13I don't know how long it is, I'm just assuming it.
- 44:14Is some time. Yeah, because the food has
- 44:17gotten moldier by the time Howard walks in.
- 44:19And she's just like, hi. Yeah, and he doesn't really say
- 44:24anything. He's just like Pearl.
- 44:26Yeah. And it's just I like that ending
- 44:31where the credits is just her with the smile the entire time.
- 44:35It gets pretty unsettling and it like, slowly, like, becomes
- 44:38tears and shit. It makes you wonder, like, was
- 44:40that entire time, like Howard just like, berating her?
- 44:43You know. Like I don't know but.
- 44:46Obviously like because we know from X that he stayed with her.
- 44:51I imagine no matter what though, Howard seemed like a normal
- 44:53person. It took some time for him to
- 44:56process that shit, but I feel like he was like, probably too
- 45:00good of a guy. He's like, I can't leave her.
- 45:02Yeah. She needs help, you know?
- 45:04I don't know at that point, man, I think you got the you got the
- 45:07pass. You can get out of that
- 45:08relationship. Yeah.
- 45:10You. Should get out of that.
- 45:11Relationship you're going to be like yeah no I think you should
- 45:13leave for your own safety that. House has to smell terrible.
- 45:16Yeah, it's got to be so bad. Rotted pork.
- 45:20Dude, it's in festival with like all kinds of insects and shit.
- 45:22Now that that house is like, yeah, you can't live there.
- 45:25Anymore so upsetting. Yeah, OK.
- 45:29All right, so that's that. That's how the movie goes.
- 45:33I'm gonna keep it at 5:00. I'm gonna keep mine at an 8.
- 45:37OK? What do you want differently
- 45:38from it? I want more horror, OK?
- 45:41I want more, you know, like I I'm fine with like the dramatic
- 45:45flair to it. I don't know.
- 45:46I just felt like it was, it just wasn't a horror movie really.
- 45:51It's a drama. I like dramas.
- 45:53Dramas aren't really my favorite, though, OK, I just
- 45:57don't like being like, all right, here's the next one.
- 46:00This is the next movie in this horror trail, which it's like if
- 46:03you take like, I don't know, it just doesn't work as a sequel or
- 46:07a prequel, you know what I mean? It just totally it's completely
- 46:10different. OK.
- 46:12Yeah, as as a standalone I think I would maybe like it better and
- 46:15that's like a non horror movie. All right.
- 46:20Well, what do you really think, Ty?
- 46:21You thought of it. Talia.
- 46:24She was pretty cuddly throughout.
- 46:25Yeah, I think she didn't really care for her treatment towards
- 46:29the animals it. Was absolutely.
- 46:31Not I think she's afraid of that type of person.
- 46:35I think. I think Talia would give it like
- 46:41a six. 6 OK. Yeah.
- 46:55I was like thinking I don't really have a good rating for it
- 46:57cuz yeah Talia was pretty cuddly with us, but I think it's cuz
- 47:00she was, like you said, afraid for the animals.
- 47:02We'll give a little. Yeah.
- 47:04Yeah. We'll be in between the two of
- 47:05us, Sam. OK, OK.
- 47:10Who'd you away to? Oh.
- 47:13Man, I know there's some things that can be relatable about
- 47:17Pearl, so that's fine. You can relate to Pearl if you
- 47:19want to. Yeah, I think I do kind of
- 47:22relate to that whole like that fear of like, what if I'm too
- 47:27old to chase my dreams? I relate to that too.
- 47:30Honestly, I would say the same thing, yeah.
- 47:32Like, I mean, I think that's something that everybody kind of
- 47:34like. Yeah.
- 47:36Everybody wrestles with that at some point in their life.
- 47:38And, you know, like you do think about it, you know, like, well,
- 47:42shit like, like, am I doing the things that I need to be doing?
- 47:48You know, I think everybody always like hits that crossroads
- 47:50in their wife. Where?
- 47:52They're like, am I going down the right path right now?
- 47:55Like, is this like what I need to be doing?
- 47:57Is this Should I be doing something like?
- 47:59Do I need to take better advantage of my circumstances?
- 48:02Yeah. And yeah, that's a super
- 48:05relatable part of this movie, and that is one that I really
- 48:09enjoy. Yeah, it was.
- 48:11It was interesting. I think that's kind of part of
- 48:14the like deeper horror with this, where it's like, it's such
- 48:19a relatable feeling, but you're putting it on this like,
- 48:22undeniable villain. Yeah.
- 48:24So it's it's weird we didn't talk about, but who is Zoe's
- 48:28ultimate warrior? Oh yeah, Zoe's ultimate warrior.
- 48:33I think Pearl is too brutal even for Zoe.
- 48:36Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:38I think she she would vibe with Theta.
- 48:41Yeah, Theta for sure, just like kind of work around and like if
- 48:44you show up like food, food. Theta sounds like Theta.
- 48:49Yeah, yeah, that's perfect. OK, what is your dream sequel?
- 48:59I want something in between Pearl and X where we see Howard
- 49:05full and get on board with all this.
- 49:07Yeah, I think that could be interesting.
- 49:09Like how does he embrace that shit?
- 49:12Like you could, it could be like a through the decades.
- 49:15So like, yeah, you could tackle like, you know, the 30's, the
- 49:1940's, the 50s. Well and remember he goes to
- 49:22World War 2. Also he fights in both wars she
- 49:25mentions. That's true.
- 49:26He does, yeah. So what then?
- 49:28You have, like, that brief period, like, all right, what
- 49:30does Pearl do during that time? Does she try and like, chase her
- 49:34dreams again with Howard not around?
- 49:36You know, like what happens. Yeah, there would be like a
- 49:38flapper era. Did she go on and try to be like
- 49:40a flapper? Yeah, Yeah.
- 49:43It could be. That would be interesting.
- 49:45Yeah, that would be interesting. WWDD What?
- 49:49Would Vin Diesel do? Yeah.
- 49:52Is it Vin Diesel or Dom? Dom.
- 49:54OK. What would Dom do?
- 49:56Yeah, well, OK. So like.
- 50:00He would listen if he was the projectionist, he'd just drive
- 50:03off faster. You just got to say the the OK
- 50:07Well first, there are two things are true about this movie.
- 50:10First off, the vehicle situation is completely different than
- 50:15what he is used to in the 2. Thousands.
- 50:17Are we having modern time Dom Toretto like transported back in
- 50:21time and he's got to figure out how to make this jalopy like
- 50:23speed? Yes, of course time travel is
- 50:26probably going to happen in Fast and the Furious X.
- 50:29That's true. Part 2, yeah.
- 50:30But also at the same time he's back there racing that old shit
- 50:33and he would repeat his credo from part 8.
- 50:38It's not what's under the hood, it's who's behind the wheel.
- 50:40Exactly. So he could probably get that
- 50:42shit going that like he would probably see Pearl and he would
- 50:48like be like the helper at the farm there for a little bit.
- 50:52He at some point moves the jalopy so fast that it skips
- 50:55across the top of the lake and the crocodile is like chasing
- 50:58behind. Him.
- 50:58Peter Pan right there. Yeah.
- 51:01I mean, ultimately it becomes a time traveling machine, just
- 51:04like Back to the Future. Yes.
- 51:06And he also acts as the inspiration for Back to the
- 51:09Future. Perfect.
- 51:11Yeah, No notes. OK, dude.
- 51:16And finally, a new tagline. OK, no star shines like a Pearl.
- 51:24That's that's kind of reach right there.
- 51:28Follow your dreams or else. Excel or expire?
- 51:38If you want to be a star, you must reach for the stars who
- 51:44gave. You must receive.
- 51:47If you want to be a star, you got reach for the stars.
- 51:51Exceed expectations just XX. But she didn't do either of
- 51:58those it. Depends on what you expected.
- 52:05How she got her start, I don't. Like that?
- 52:10Yeah, she got her star. Like tiny tea.
- 52:15Tea. Yeah, OK.
- 52:19Sure, we'll see that. Cool.
- 52:20All right. Do we have reviews?
- 52:22We do all righty, so I'm gonna start off with our IMDb review.
- 52:29OK, it is. I was more on the positive side,
- 52:36you know 5 but still I I felt better about this.
- 52:38So I got like AI know you like this movie, so I got a lower
- 52:40rated one. OK, it's titled The X Factor.
- 52:45Absolutely loved. Oh it's a four out to him.
- 52:47Absolutely. I absolutely loved X for its
- 52:50shock factor and for being disturbing on so many levels.
- 52:53The only thing disturbing about Pearl was how unnecessary the
- 52:56sequel prequel was. It is a self indulgent money
- 52:59grab from director Ty West and writers Ty West and Mia Goth.
- 53:03When I read about the upcoming film, I sat there pondering what
- 53:06was the point? Pearl was a character in X.
- 53:09She was the old lady with issues who got what she deserved in the
- 53:12end. Why would I want to see a film
- 53:13about her life? Why was it even important to
- 53:16tell her story? Either way, curiosity killed the
- 53:18cat, as the saying goes, and I decided to watch Pearl.
- 53:22Pearl is a very slow paced film. For most part it is a family
- 53:26drama. The first bit of horror, apart
- 53:28from psychological horror arrived around the halfway mark.
- 53:31But it was short lived and the film returned to its dramatic
- 53:34roots. There's even a speech from Pearl
- 53:36which will last 11 minutes. Yawn already?
- 53:40This is a slow burn horror with emphasis on slow.
- 53:43Apart from that, the film was just completely unnecessary.
- 53:46I mean, just why? On a positive note, the film's
- 53:49best attributes are the brilliant colours and Mia Goth's
- 53:52performance. The film's colours are radiant
- 53:54and bright and it looks amazing on screen.
- 53:56Mia Goth once again delivered a fantastic performance.
- 54:00This is also a very good character study.
- 54:01Just like X, the cinematography and those wide shots are
- 54:05beautiful. Also note how cleverly the X is
- 54:07prominent throughout the film. Despite these positive elements
- 54:11though, Pearl ultimately felt like a complete waste of a time.
- 54:15X was so much better. Had Pearl been a stand alone
- 54:17film and not part of a franchise, I might have viewed
- 54:20it much better. But that's the problem with
- 54:22franchises, isn't it? All right, I got to say I didn't
- 54:26steal any of my points from this person here.
- 54:28I had that stuff like written out before I found that review.
- 54:31But I I mean, that was a lot of the things that I was saying.
- 54:34Like, it's not a horror film. It doesn't really work.
- 54:36It's like a prequel sequel. I mean it, it works, but like I
- 54:40felt like it was more of a companion piece than anything,
- 54:42you know? And I guess I think of it more
- 54:45as more as a companion piece than I do is an actual prequel.
- 54:48Because obviously it wasn't going to be like, how did we get
- 54:53to the events of X if we're jumping back 60 years?
- 54:57Yeah. So I guess for me, I didn't have
- 55:00those same issues, but the difference in expectations going
- 55:05into a movie. Well, I think it's fair to
- 55:07expect something when it's billed as that.
- 55:10It just says an origin story. It's saying what Pearl's origin
- 55:15is. It's a trilogy though, Like it's
- 55:17acknowledged as a trilogy. So like, I don't know, it's not
- 55:20like a this is an optional piece, like it's part of the
- 55:24trilogy. OK, I mean, think about like the
- 55:27Cornetto trilogy. Those aren't really.
- 55:29That's an unofficial trilogy. This is an official trilogy.
- 55:31I don't know anyway. Yeah, I get it.
- 55:37I get why people love this movie.
- 55:38And there are horrifying things in it.
- 55:40You know, it's just, I agree with that whole lot.
- 55:43But it's not about what I think. Let's see what other people
- 55:46think. We got listener reviews.
- 55:48Yeah. All right.
- 55:49Over on Instagram, Constant Reader, Kentucky, I believe this
- 55:52is Jason. It is, says Pearl, manages to
- 55:55capture the look and feel of a classic film far more than most
- 55:58have tried. You know, that's true.
- 56:00It actually does feel like a movie of that era, which is one
- 56:04of its strengths for me. Like that a lot about this.
- 56:06Yeah. Jurassic Soul says great
- 56:09character study and really gives a lot of context for X.
- 56:12Mia Goth shines valid. Crash out valid.
- 56:18Can I say some valid? I feel really old, but I don't
- 56:22fully understand when to use the phrase crash out.
- 56:25It's when you like, have a fucking meltdown.
- 56:28I kind of understand that, but I also feel like whenever I see
- 56:31people say like, oh, this person's crashing out, I'm like,
- 56:33I don't feel like I'm seeing it. Crashing out.
- 56:35I think it's also used very like freely.
- 56:39It doesn't like always. I don't know.
- 56:41I don't I'm this is my old person moment.
- 56:45I just don't get it. Tucker says Mia Goth got robbed
- 56:50of an Oscar and this movie gave us David Corn Sweat's Superman.
- 56:54So 10 on 10 Corn Sweat's Superman.
- 56:58Who's is that? The guy that's playing Superman
- 57:00now? I understand this is going to be
- 57:03a really hot take out here on the Internet, but I just don't
- 57:05give a shit about Superman movies, so I don't know.
- 57:09I can't tell you if that's he's playing Superman right now.
- 57:12I don't know. Yeah, I haven't really paid
- 57:15attention to that. I don't know.
- 57:16A lot of people like it. I like James Cone.
- 57:18I don't know, maybe I'll watch it one day.
- 57:20Final review is Michael Lee Howard, who says I really loved
- 57:25Pearl. I'd prepare myself to not like
- 57:27it since I had joined X so much. That being said, I love the
- 57:30genre shift. Mia got killed it.
- 57:33I have watched it a couple of Times Now and I love it more on
- 57:36each watch. That final scene lives in my
- 57:38mind. Rent free. 8 1/2 out of 10.
- 57:41Yeah, I think that's it was a solid way to like close the
- 57:44movie. Yeah, it does have like a very
- 57:46strong impact for sure. I I like that a lot, too.
- 57:49I like that you at least enjoyed the genre.
- 57:52Yeah, the genre shift there. Yeah, it works for some people.
- 57:57OK, well, all right. I guess that does it for Pearl
- 58:00for this week on the show. Thanks everybody for sending in
- 58:03reviews and everything like that.
