- 0:07On December 21st, 1974, the Miami Dolphins faced the Oakland Raiders at Oakland Alameda County Coliseum in the AFC Divisional Playoff Round of the 1974 NFL season.
- 0:19The game featured two legendary coaches in their prime. Don Shula, coming off two consecutive Super Bowl championships, leads his 11-3 Dolphins against John Madden's 12-2 Raiders.
- 0:30This is the Raiders Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bill King and Scotty Sterling.
- 0:36They're around their respective coaches. This one man will be underway and John Madden, despite the light drizzle in the mid-50s, wearing a short-sleeved shirt down there in the field today. Scotty, we talk about what does a home stadium mean. The Raiders have been in this Coliseum nine years. They won 55, lost 11, and tied 3.
- 0:54Miami, since Shula brought excellence to the Orange Bowl, has won 37, lost 2, and tied none in the Orange Bowl.
- 1:01I have a question about it. Two factors that are very important in that, Bill. Number one is when you have to go on a road, as you well know, it's a disrupting thing. You have to fly, particularly when you're going across country, it's very worrying, and then there's a jet lag.
- 1:14Number two, unquestionably, fan reaction plays a tremendous part in a game as emotional as football. And I think those are the two key reasons why with good football teams, the home advantage is important.
- 1:25Bauer and Hubert Ginn wait near the north goal line to our left. George Jachabenko, the Raiders, will kick off from the 35-yard line on our right, moving from our right to our left.
- 1:35We're set to go.
- 1:39They move on the ball. Here's a side-winding kick, high end over end, not real deep, drifting up, Moore takes it on the 11. The rookie up to the 15, to the 20, to the 25, 30. Wears out to the left, the 35, 40, gets a great block, the 50, up the left side, being chased by Jachabenko, the 30, the 20, the 15, the 10, just down Miami.
- 1:57Holy Toledo, what an opener!
- 2:1539 yards, not more for the kickoff return, and Miami leads 6-0. As he broke through at around the 30-35-yard line, he wheeled out to the left and found the lane, and Jachabenko could not catch it.
- 2:33It's a 0-0, you're premium. Trying for the conversion. It snapped and spotted, it's kicked up, it is good. And so the Miami Dolphins lead the Raiders 7-0 with only 15 seconds of this football game having a lapse.
- 2:49The Raiders have not had a run back like that against them all year on a kickoff. Warren Bankston almost had him as he broke through that one pack, and then there was an excellent block farther upfield.
- 3:02The 40 that let Moore get to the outside. Scotty, I can't help but remember the first play ever for the Miami Dolphins, their first season, their first game, 1966, Orange Bowl against the Oakland Raiders, season opener, a fellow named Joe Hauer ran back the opening kickoff for 95 yards in a touchdown.
- 3:19The guy who was with that club at the time with Miami, Jimmy Warren, now with Oakland, was one of two guys who had a real shot at Moore, but Jimmy got blocked at about the 30, and Mike Jennery, the linebacker, pulled up with what looked to be a pulled muscle, perhaps a hamstring at about the 25.
- 3:34Now the Dolphins kickoff goes again, goes toward the Raiders. Hart, Hart takes it at the 11, up to the 15, the 20, the 25, side step, Barrell to the 30, and he's in a pack and brought down at 31 yard line. Barrell Hart, blocked down by Don Nottingham, the reserve fullback.
- 3:52Now the Oakland Raiders with their offensive units, Stabler at quarterback, Clarence Davis and Marv Hubbard, the running backs, wide receivers, Cliff Branch and Fred Baletnikov, the tight end Bob Moore, from left to right in the interior line, Archel, Gene Upshaw, Giamotto, George Peeler and John Vella.
- 4:08Miami leads 7-0. That's the only thing we didn't talk about in the pregame show, is a return kickoff for a touchdown.
- 4:16Give you the Dolphins defense in a moment. Stabler under center. Odd defense, puts Hines over the center. Davis now skitters through a hole up to the 35 yard line up the middle and a knot of tacklers led by Bob Mathis and knocks him down.
- 4:30The Dolphins front four very well known once the no-namers, at left end, Vern Den Herder, left tackle Manny Fernandez from San Lorenzo, the right tackle Bob Hines, the right end Bill Stanfield, the middle linebacker, the great Nick Guanacati, the right linebacker, Mike Colon,
- 4:45the right linebacker Bob Mathis, who's been a regular since Doug Swift went down with a broken arm in midseason.
- 4:51More later, here's Branch to the left, Baletnikov to the right at second and sixth.
- 4:56Guanacati jams in in the middle and then drops off the line of scrimmage and here's a handoff to Hubbard. Hubbard blows by Guanacati and blasts up to the 39 yard line.
- 5:03The Raiders on the snap caught the Dolphins at a little shift at the line of scrimmage and I think they used it to advantage. Bob Hines finally made the tackle.
- 5:11Well Hubbard made a little move Bill, he spotted that too when he came up to the line. It looked like he had intended originally to go left off tackle but he made a move back inside between the guard and the center because he saw that shift by the Dolphins.
- 5:22Raiders about a yard and a half short of the first down on third down.
- 5:25Third down almost two. Tim Foley is the left corner, Curtis Jopps in the right corner, the safeties are Dick Anderson and Jake Scott for the Dolphins.
- 5:32Now they slot Branch to the left inside Baletnikov.
- 5:37First third down play of the day. Handoff to Hubbard, he blows across the 41 and I think he made it.
- 5:42Stanso stopped him, threw him back a bit but it appeared that he had the 41 or 42 yard line before Stanso and Hines made the tackle.
- 5:50First down Oakland. They trail 7-0. The ballgame exactly two minutes old at this instant. Nat Moore, the rookie.
- 6:005'9 and a half, 180 from the University of Florida who has been a big factor for this club ran back that opening kickoff 89 yards for the touchdown.
- 6:10Branch to the left against Johnson. Baletnikov goes out to the right against Foley.
- 6:16Handoff to Hubbard. Hubbard doesn't make much and is blasted back by Buonaccati along with Jake Scott and Manny Fernandez.
- 6:24Trying to go over right guard, there was a little bit of a hole but the play didn't really develop crisply and it was jammed back in.
- 6:30Now the Dolphins bring in Larry Ball for Bob Hines. With Matheson a regular, they bring in Ball as their fourth linebacker in what they call their 53 defense or what corresponds to the Oakland Orange.
- 6:42Nat Moore incidentally is 1-2 third in the final league fast and kickoff returns. He's returned 22 for 587 yards. 26.7 but had not scored a touchdown until this one today.
- 6:53Branch to the left, Baletnikov to the right. Sabre drops back for his first pass of the day. He looks. He throws upfield in the middle of the zone. It's deflected.
- 7:00It is intercepted by Anderson at the 30 yard line. Hudson 35. Back to the 40, middle of the field, the 45. He's blocked out at the 48.
- 7:07Bob Matheson deflected the pass in front of Branch and Anderson behind Branch made the catch. There were four men in that area of the zone.
- 7:17Marv Hubbard made the tackle on Anderson's return. The Dolphins did not have the interception record they did in past season, only 16, but they get off to a good start here as it's time out on the field.
- 7:281149 to go in the first quarter. The scoreboard showing Miami 7 and Oakland nothing.
- 7:36With a field general of Grazie's caliber, they couldn't be more advantageous than to start where they are right now, Scotty, on their own 48 yard line.
- 7:44I would have thought before the game that Schuyler, Don Schuyler, the Miami coach, would have accepted his field position after the opening kickoff. Instead, he got a touchdown on the opening kickoff.
- 7:54An interception puts him on his own 48. You can't ask for much more than that.
- 7:58Now the Dolphins with Warfield wide to the left, not more to the right. Benny Malone in the backfield along with Sanka, first and 10.
- 8:07Grazie with his first play for scrimmage today.
- 8:14And he gives to Sanka. Sanka drives over left tackle to the 49 yard line of the Raiders stopped by Horace Jones to gain a three. Flag was down.
- 8:26So the Dolphins look as if they're going to benefit from an Oakland penalty here.
- 8:33Still foul. I didn't see against whom it was called.
- 8:4115 yards. It was on the tackle. I think after Jones hit him, they ruled that somebody came in late.
- 8:48Connors and Jones stopped him.
- 8:53Don Nottingham, the man they call the human bowling ball, has been a very valuable backup fullback this year to score some key touchdowns.
- 9:00He is now in. He scored eight touchdowns rushing. He's in for Sanka.
- 9:06Warfield to the left, it's first and 10 on the Oakland 34 and things have gone sour early for the Raiders. Here's a double wing now.
- 9:18Grazie with a long count.
- 9:20Now he gives to Malone and Malone is hit by Connors and buried at the 35. He loses a yard.
- 9:27Connors had immediate help from Villa Piano and Horace Jones.
- 9:32It'll be second and 11. Sanka comes back in now for Nottingham.
- 9:37The Raiders really have to try to turn the momentum of this game around by themselves here.
- 9:44One turnover they've suffered already and they must try to achieve some turnovers of their own to take away from the Dolphins.
- 9:54The Raiders put 13 men on the field. Now they bring two off. They had extra backs and they've got an orange defense now.
- 10:03And the Dolphins, Grazie goes over to say something to the official.
- 10:08Now Grazie has used up a lot of his time. He gets off the play, however, to Sanka. Sanka cracks at the line of scrimmage and gets very little.
- 10:15He's thrown back by the entire left side of the Raider line. They try to go over. Norm Evans, the right tackle.
- 10:20Alright, here's a wrinkle in the game. Madden's net in. Monty Johnson and somebody else.
- 10:25So they had 13 men in the huddle and they didn't bring two men out to the required 11 until the Dolphins broke their offensive huddle.
- 10:33Now we saw this earlier in the year. Henry Strand of Kansas City, the great innovator, did this.
- 10:38He feels it would give the defense just a little bit of an edge because it puts some question in the quarterback's mind as to what that defense will do.
- 10:44Third and nine, Jim Manage is in at tight end for the Dolphins. Jim Kick is in with Sanka in the backfield. The Raiders bring Monty Johnson off.
- 10:51But they have five defensive backs with Warren in now. Oh, this is going to be a tactical game today.
- 10:57To the left is Warfield and the right is Moore. That's Nat Moore. And a Raider jumps outside.
- 11:03Back goes Grazie setting up play as being blown dead, however, before he can execute.
- 11:10Somebody had a thing of his time came over the middle, but he may have been drawn.
- 11:16It was illegal procedure.
- 11:22Now it's the delay of the game. It is the delay of the game. I had not seen the preliminary sign.
- 11:27Tom came across the line of scrimmage, but that was immaterial because the Dolphins used too much time.
- 11:33It is now third and 14. Monty Johnson in the middle of the huddle, but nobody comes off yet.
- 11:38So they don't disclose to the Dolphins until the last second when they come up to the line of scrimmage what their defense is in the way of personnel.
- 11:44Now Warren is lifting off as if he's coming out of here, but that's a decoy. Here comes Monty Johnson out.
- 11:49So you got four rushers up there.
- 11:55Now back to fast Grazie again setting up. Looks deep going to Warfield behind the defense and he is incomplete.
- 12:02He was cut down by double tuning on the goal line. The Dolphins are angry. They're screaming over there that it was pass interference.
- 12:10For a moment Warfield broke between the two defenders and got behind them.
- 12:16But then the pass didn't lead him enough. He took over Jack Tatum who was back there to help out Nehmeyer-Wilson.
- 12:25Larry Seifel comes over to punt or comes in to punt. The Raiders hold the ball on the 38-yard line of Oakland.
- 12:33Seven-nothing Miami on the opening kickoff return by Matt Moore.
- 12:37The snap. Seifel doesn't punt them long, but he punts them very accurately and hangs them well.
- 12:42He places this one out of bounds going for the left sideline. It went out in the vicinity of the 10.
- 12:47They put it on the 13 where the official marks it. Time is out on the field with 9.42 to go.
- 12:52We're in the first quarter and the scoreboard shows Miami 7 Oakland nothing.
- 13:03So we discussed before the game how Shuler might attack Oakland's defense. That's a three down lineman and the four linebackers.
- 13:10And of course they get into a fifth defensive back. Oakland today with this little bit of deception picking up, borrowing something from Kansas City.
- 13:16Of course puts a burden on Shuler in that respect. More directly greasy. He just can't call that thing in the huddle.
- 13:21He may have to audible eyes. First and 10 on the 13. Branch to the left.
- 13:25Botanical to the right. The handoff goes to Clarence Davis who slants hard over the 15 up to the 17 and a half yard line.
- 13:31Knocked down by Mathis in the left linebacker.
- 13:34Incidentally I haven't mentioned it since the kickoff scouting. I think the actual precipitation has ceased.
- 13:39The air is very thick with a hazy misty feel to it, but I don't believe we're getting anything really coming down.
- 13:46They go to the 53 defense now with Ball coming in the ballgame for Hines.
- 13:51Ball lines up outside Dan Herter at left end, but in the standing position.
- 13:57Here's the handoff to Hubbard. A big hole up the middle and he plows his way to the 25 yard line.
- 14:01Tuckled by Johnson and it's a first down Oakland.
- 14:04Oh the Raider middle that time did a whale of a blocking job as Hubbard had that big area to rumble through.
- 14:11Here's Hines coming in now for ball. So they've got four runners again as the Raiders have the ball in their own 25, trailing 7-0.
- 14:19Sabler running the club of cars. He was voted this week as the most valuable player in the AFC.
- 14:27Branch slots left inside Boletnikov.
- 14:32Quick count gives to Hubbard. Runs right into the middle of the defense and is driven back and knocked down by Stanfill the right linebacker.
- 14:39Hubbard was trying to go over Gene Upshaw's left guard position, but Uppie couldn't budge anybody and he was driven right back into the ball carrier.
- 14:47Now back in comes Larry Ball for the Dolphins replacing Hines.
- 14:56The fog over and around the Coliseum here seems to be very thin because the sun at times acts as if it might even break through.
- 15:04It's much lighter than it was.
- 15:07Branch to the left, Boletnikov to the right.
- 15:11Dolphins have Fernandez right over the head of Giamotto. Man in motion to the right is Davis.
- 15:15Back to Pascoe-Stabler. He's 0-1. There's a long pass intended for Branch up the left side against Johnson.
- 15:20He can't hold on! That's a 33-yard line left sideline. Johnson looked like he might have a beat on it all the way.
- 15:27Branch suddenly spurred at a step past him, but couldn't hang on to the pass.
- 15:36It would have been a great catch had he made it. He hesitated a little bit and then sped out, which decoyed Johnson just enough, but he couldn't hold on.
- 15:44He was running absolutely with his back to the ball, Bill, and had to come up over his own face, Matt. Very tough. He couldn't even turn around.
- 15:50Bill, one thing different between the game last year and this. Oakland much more familiar with the 53 or the Orange because they used it themselves and worked against it all week. That wasn't the case last year.
- 15:59Now it's their chance. Slot right. Here comes a blitz up the middle. They pick it up. He looks. He throws! Wirtley-Croft with a comeback.
- 16:06Shoots the puck. We're at the 35 and dives to the 40 for a first down.
- 16:09Wirtley had a good catch in front of Jim Foley, the left cornerback. Right at the 36. And Peelback shook the tackler and got about four more.
- 16:19Wirtley-Croft with about 450 career passes. 14th in the all-time list. Number one active in the AFC.
- 16:29And he's become very adept at this particular hook or comeback pattern under the zone defenses.
- 16:37Now putting left his branch to the right. Wirtley-Croft. Raiders trying to take it a little bit at a time, except for the one they went to branch and didn't complete.
- 16:44Hand up to Hubbard. Tucked up nicely by Matheson at the 41. He submarine the play as Hubbard began to accelerate.
- 16:53It'll be second and nine. They bring ball back in now for Hines and the orange defense.
- 16:59Delfins very seldom play around with their secondary going to five defensive backs, as the Raiders do.
- 17:07They have great confidence in that zone, Bill, as well as Mike. He has been very successful with it.
- 17:11Not only at Miami, but before that at Baltimore, where he went to Super Bowls.
- 17:16John Madden, by the way, has put on a parka now. Branch to the left. Balevnikov to the right.
- 17:21Back to Pat Stabler. Good blocking. Now he throws badly. Trying to lay it off to Bob Moore out to the right.
- 17:28He was kind of a safety valve at the 45, but Foley coming up on the rotating zone had him covered.
- 17:34Stabler may have thrown it low and into the dirt deliberately, because it was not an easy pass to complete to Moore.
- 17:40And he probably wouldn't have gained much on it had he made the catch.
- 17:45This is a tough down against Miami in that very, very disciplined zone. Third and nine.
- 17:50They figure you almost have to go to the air. And of course they can put pretty good pass rush on.
- 17:54And they sit back in those tight zones. Very difficult down against Miami.
- 17:58Ball lines up outside the right end this time. Branch left. Balevnikov right back to pass.
- 18:04They pick up the rush. Here's a pass of branch and he's knocked at the 49. Short of the first down.
- 18:10Good tackle by Charlie Babb, who is in the secondary now.
- 18:15Babb replaced Jake Scott. I don't know whether Scott was hurt or not.
- 18:21And the Raiders are going to punt here with a fourth and one.
- 18:25They trail seven nothing.
- 18:32Dropping back in single safety is Nat Moore, who chilled the Raiders with that 89 yard kickoff return.
- 18:41Now the Dolphins drop two more men back in short positions.
- 18:44Babb and Anderson as Guy takes the snaps, drives into his punt.
- 18:48Lips of beauty. Rifting high. Moore back.
- 18:51And it's landing in the four and bounding into the end zone. So it'll be a touchback as Guy boots 151 yards.
- 18:56But the Dolphins get it out on their own 20. Time out on the field.
- 18:59525 to go. First quarter in the scoreboard shows Miami 7, Oakland nothing.
- 19:04The Dolphins offense has run only five plays thus far.
- 19:07Here they are with their second possession in the 20 yard line.
- 19:10But the kickoff return gives them the seven nothing lead.
- 19:13They have Benny Malone and Zonka in the backfield. Warfield goes to the left.
- 19:16Out to the right comes Nat Moore.
- 19:19Breezy gives to Zonka. Sends him powering off left tackle and he is knocked down at the 25 as he picks up five.
- 19:25Jeff Jones clutching at him. Wayne Moore and Jim Cuchenberg.
- 19:29The left tackle and the left yard. Just power out that time.
- 19:33Zonka slants. It'll be second and five.
- 19:37Now that's the thing we were talking about in the pregame show.
- 19:39They can carve out five, five and a half yards. Six yards of pop on first down.
- 19:44They get you where they want you.
- 19:47Swat flip for the first time today.
- 19:49The wide man is Moore.
- 19:51Picked up by Wilson. The swat back of course is Warfield. Picked up by Skip Thomas.
- 19:57And the handoff here goes to Malone. He dives across the 30 to the 32.
- 20:01Quick start that time. The defense stacked up the blocking.
- 20:05Cuchenberg right at the line of scrimmage.
- 20:07Connors submarine. Jim and Moore just dived over the top.
- 20:11We'll pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 20:13This is the Oakland Raiders football network.
- 20:17Miami first and ten.
- 20:19It's important to the Raiders if they can contain the Dolphins here of course in the punt before they drive deep in Oakland territory.
- 20:25Momentum. Lots of factors involved.
- 20:27Here's a handoff to Zonka. Over left yard.
- 20:29Bulls pass the 35. Carries a tackle with him up to the 38.
- 20:33And Zonka.
- 20:35Beginning to get some momentum now.
- 20:38He limps a little bit as he goes back to the huddle but he plays very effectively hurt.
- 20:44The key against Zonka of course is for the big defensive lineman to get a good hit on him because he's so big and strong.
- 20:49He's bigger than most linebackers and bigger than any defensive back.
- 20:52And they have a tough time with them. That's why he gets those eight yards because he gets the three yards.
- 20:57You know once he gets beyond that defensive line. That's where he's got to stop him.
- 21:00And almost six that time. It's second and four.
- 21:03More to the right with Warfield in the slot. They give it to Zonka.
- 21:06He's hit by Villepiano. Just breaks right through up to the 41.
- 21:09Phil hit him and he went three yards with Villepiano hanging on before Tom came to his help.
- 21:16He's just like a big workhorse shaking off a couple of gnats.
- 21:21Switches tail and off they go.
- 21:23Third down and about one.
- 21:26Moore goes out of there. They bring in Mandich so they'll have double tight ends.
- 21:35That son again seems to be penetrating more effectively against the overhead fog.
- 21:39Now tight blocking up front.
- 21:42Warfield post-flanked about a yard to the right. Raiders jam in a bit in the middle.
- 21:48Third and one.
- 21:50Now the handoff to Malone. Malone follows Zonka through.
- 21:53First down to the 45. Still on his feet.
- 21:55Finally driven back but he has progress to the 45 where Irons stopped it.
- 21:59That's another thing Zonka can do. He can lead the way through that hole.
- 22:02And that's exactly what he did that time.
- 22:06Now the Dolphins go back to their regular wide receivers.
- 22:09On this possession, Scotty, the Raiders have not at all used their deception defensive huddle.
- 22:16Going with Bubba and Cisneran. Tom's and Jones up front. Villepiano, Connors and Irons the linebackers.
- 22:20Thomas and Wilson the corners and Atkinson and Tatum the safeties.
- 22:23Slot left Miami. Falling their own 46 first down.
- 22:29Greasy backpedals into the pocket. He looks. He rifles a quick out to Moore.
- 22:32Makes the catch at the 48 and the Raiders down to the 40.
- 22:35Handoff headed by Neemai Wilson at the 38 just inside the sideline. First and ten.
- 22:40Now Greasy nibbling away at the Raider defense.
- 22:46The Raider cornerbacks were dropping off pace to protect against both Moore and Warfield who are deep threats
- 22:51and Moore ran the short pad under the sideline.
- 22:55Now they've advanced to the. They put it out just inside the 38 yard line of the Raiders.
- 23:00The crowd has been rather severely quieted since the opening kickoff which Moore returned 89 yards for a score.
- 23:08Backs in the eye this time with Warfield left and Moore out to the right.
- 23:11Handoff to Zonka the up back and he piles over the right side.
- 23:15Down to about the 34 yard line with Fleming the tight end leading the blocking.
- 23:22Connors, Bubba Smith helped in the tackle. They put it on the 33 and Scottie it's five a pop every first down.
- 23:29That's exactly what we were talking about in last year's game in December.
- 23:32Exactly and of course they don't have to worry about throwing the ball when they come up to these.
- 23:36These downs even when they went to more of his first and ten not necessarily a throwing down.
- 23:40I think that's why you're not going to see Oakland with their deception because they haven't had those tough throwing downs.
- 23:45Greasy is one for two right now. That completion a few moments ago.
- 23:48Warfield to the left Nat Moore to the right.
- 23:53Long count and Kuchenberg jumps the count at left guard.
- 23:56He went and count too soon. Illegal procedure. Flags fall. It'll be second and ten.
- 24:04The Dolphins coming into this game.
- 24:09Mark the fifth consecutive season that they are in the playoffs all since Shuler's arrival.
- 24:15Overall in the playoffs they won eight and lost two at home. They're four and all away from home. Four and two.
- 24:21Now they bring Mandich on a tight end. He's a pass catcher at that position.
- 24:26He's caught 33 this year averaging a little over 11 yards to carry six of them for touchdown.
- 24:31The Raiders going to their deception huddle and now they've got an orange defense in with Monty Johnson.
- 24:39Monty lines up defensively speaking on the right side. Warfield to the left of the Dolphins. More to the right.
- 24:43Here's a trap play to Kuchenberg. Great play.
- 24:46O'Connor, Neil Malone at the line of 30.
- 24:50That's a play that if you get past that first line of defense a guy like Malone can get big yardage in the secondary.
- 24:58But it's third and nine and a half. They gain well it's third and nine they put it down now.
- 25:03Fairly a yard. And they bring on Jim Kicks. A two power back. Kickenzaka here on third down.
- 25:09And of course kick from the halfback position has been a very valuable receiver for the Dolphins.
- 25:13And the Raiders are aware of that. They'll look for a kick to be out there in that passing route.
- 25:18There's the gun sounding the end of the first quarter and the scoreboard shows Miami 7 Oakland nothing.
- 25:24Now the teams have changed ends of the field. The Dolphins are driving from our right to our left.
- 25:28They're coming up on a third down and about nine and a half situation.
- 25:33The ball on the Oakland 32 yard line. Dan Connery has been over to talk to John Madden and now goes before going back on the field to see Don Schenegg.
- 25:42Linebacker coach.
- 25:45Breezy comes back from the meeting with Kula on the opposite side. Always a cool customer.
- 25:50Breezy 60 percent completion on his passes this year.
- 25:54And he's the heart and nerve center of this Dolphin offense. He's what makes all the components click together.
- 26:01Third and nine and a half. They're not in field goal range at this point. Now, Marty Johnson Johnson comes off.
- 26:06The Raiders have three rushes and an extra defensive back in.
- 26:12Back to pass goes Breezy shutting up with protection. He throws battered down by Nehemiah Wilson.
- 26:17He's putting in front of Warfield at the 25 as he ran the outcatter.
- 26:22Nehemiah fine play on Warfield. A great veteran.
- 26:26It's so crazy as one for three and in comes Larry Seifel a punt. And that's how he kept both his backs and they wanted to go to Warfield and they needed that maximum protection.
- 26:35They figured the Raiders were just blowing which they were. Kicking the pullback staying in the pass block for three. Great play by Nehemiah.
- 26:42I mentioned that Jake Scott had not been in the last defensive stand for the Dolphins against the Raiders and I noticed him sitting over on the sideline whether he'll be back on this next greater possession.
- 26:51I don't know. Here's a snap Seifel kicks one for the left coffin corner but he didn't get the corner.
- 26:57Lands on the floor and bounds into the end zone. We'll have a touchback and the Raiders take the football at the 20 with Sabre coming on around the offense again.
- 27:07Up to this moment each team has run 13 plays. Miami's four first downs Oakland three.
- 27:14Miami 49 yards offense Oakland 46. That's even as they can be the difference in the game right now purely and simply Nat Morris kickoff return.
- 27:32Now the Raiders with Sabre quarterback sending the Lehtnitz off to the left and Branch is in the slot.
- 27:38And off the Hubbard powers over right guard and doesn't hate still on his feet and he's up to the 23 with a second effort after Jim Otto.
- 27:46George Baylor cleared a little bit of daylight for him Bob Moore tried to get a block to help him and Stanfield made the stop after Hubbard kept crashing and pumping away for about almost four.
- 27:57Last year at the end of the first quarter we had the identical score Miami seven Oakland nothing but Miami in that game on their first possession after he see the opening kickoff they marched for the touchdown.
- 28:09Oakland was able to reach their own 48 in the first period here they were able to reach their own 49.
- 28:14Miami is Miami had control the line of scrimmage better and then ballgame at that point.
- 28:17Here's a handoff to Davis side step to tackler and quick back up the middle of the 28 yard line where Jen Herter makes her stop.
- 28:24And Manny Fernandez hit him down low also they were in the orange defense that time and Scotty Charlie Bab is again in the secondary replacing Scott at free safety now what Scott's injury is we've not been informed obviously must be an injury because
- 28:37they've got is a very integral part of the Miami Delfin defense. Now that it's third and two and a half for the Raiders they were going to pass.
- 28:54He's got time and the ball pops out of his hands. He tried to pull it back at the last second from what it appeared he was looking to bullet make off up the right is I'm came through and the ball stayed in his hands and he just wound wound out wound up kind of
- 29:09grounding it off to his right as if he just lost control of it or else he thought better at the last second tried to pull it back and wound up doing that.
- 29:17Oakland trying to confuse Miami a little bit in the first three when he had a third and two they went to a ground play this time on third and two he went to the air. So here's Miami something to think about.
- 29:26Here's Ray guy the AFC punting champion forty two point two per kick over the year. Fifty one yards the last time he booted his the snap the kick is away and he sliced it badly off the right side of the foot.
- 29:37It's going to all it's a man is Bob Anderson was caught by Harold Hart as he was waiting for the punt. There's a flag down and the Raiders were he pedalized the ball was not kicked as high as I wanted.
- 29:47It was somewhat off the side of the foot at the 40 yard line. Anderson was waiting for it and I came down and crashed into an interfering with him illegally.
- 29:56It'll be a penalty against those women the Dolphins again live excellent field position.
- 30:03The report on Jake Scott he suffered a twisted knee in the first defensive stand of the Dolphins.
- 30:09It's possible he will play some more but it's in the area of right now they don't really know 15 yards against the Raiders and those are the penalties you just can't afford.
- 30:19You cannot afford those penalties. Time's out on the field.
- 30:23And with 1320 to go on the second quarter the scoreboard shows Miami 20 and Miami seven at Oakland nothing.
- 30:31Oakland defense starting to be asked to carry a pretty good size burden here now with the Dolphins getting these possessions at midfield or even better.
- 30:41Dolphins field position started at their own 48 at their own 20 at the Oakland 44 this time.
- 30:49Now the backs of the I formation Warfield comes left and more goes right.
- 30:56There's a handoff to Zonko and he rams ahead he's hit and dropped by Irons at about the 42.
- 31:04I had to get the blocking that time from Wayne Moore the left tackle gained about to pressure on Oakland's defense bill the last possession by Miami they reached the Oakland's 33 a penalty aided them aided Oakland at that point and they eventually forced them to kick.
- 31:18Now they're at Oakland's 42 and of course any time they're across that 50 that pressure starts to mount on the defense.
- 31:26And he lines up at the left hand position outside of this run or feel a little left more to the right.
- 31:49And he gets in both back to block that time there was a superb charge by the Oakland defense Johnson got good heat on from the defensive right hand and he's the one that forced crazy to duck allowing the other the time to pour in on it.
- 32:06In the first quarter Miami control the ball for eight minutes and seven seconds Oakland for six minutes 53 seconds that's pretty even.
- 32:18To the left goes Warfield to the right is more it's third and 17 and got managed in a tight end they go look for him a lot of times back those three he's got that date he lets them come in on him inside step to the left.
- 32:29He's in trouble. He's running Johnson messages and disruptations and out of bounds at the 47 yard line of the Raiders.
- 32:37Marty Johnson took a flying dive when finally crazy decided the only out like was to run for his life. Why did this thing behind the 50 yard line but this run pursued him out and it'll be fourth down and cycle comes in a part of the Raider D.
- 32:52The
- 32:54In the first down interestingly Miami around six first down plays and made 35 yards that's almost six a try Oakland ran five plays and made 12 cycle funded 25 yards the only other time that he was putting from here's a snap and the boot is away as a good rush was put on and back
- 33:19and back as well.
- 33:22Steps and dropped at the 23 yard line trying to find a little cheek in that first wave Henry Stuckey came down and ailing Henry Stuckey came out of Merritt College and so it'll be first it's not open.
- 33:38The ball on their own 22 yard line they have not been on the opponent side of the 50 today. Kenny Saylor at quarterback while time is out on the field right now and we repaint it here.
- 33:51At this moment we have 1151 a lot of time remaining to play in the second quarter I said off Mike. The last time there was a timeout and we had broken away here before the Dolphins started that position on open 44 I said to Scottie, which seemed to me that the Raiders,
- 34:06even if they don't generate a lot of offense if they can move the ball some take a little heat off their own defense and then the defense continue to stand up. If they're only down seven nothing at halftime with the reception of the kickoff in the second half.
- 34:19They're not in bad shape at all but that's very pivotal to do at least that another factor along that same vein bill which would help open the Oakland team is a very very strong team physically.
- 34:28And although they've not done much offensively they have pounded that Miami defense now if they can for instance in this situation drive the field maintain that ball for five or six minutes and continue to pound Miami.
- 34:40I think in a later stage in this game middle of third period fourth quarter you're going to see Oakland's physical dominance come to the front.
- 34:47All right to the left goes branch in the slot inside Balenciaga more the tight on the right side Sabre on a plate back the path rolls out to the left back inside your pocket coffee makes the catch at the 35 trying to peel back.
- 35:00He was dropped by Matheson at the 32.
- 35:03Fred was looking for a little running room made a semi circle and he had had the first down and by running backward and getting tackled may have lost it.
- 35:10Let's see.
- 35:11We're going to be very close Mike even yet the desk call for a measurement. What other factors Scotty and that is not to get a great a young man named Charlie Bab and his third year from Memphis State.
- 35:21But he's been thrown the burden of playing Jake Scott's position if it's a tight ball game somewhere the Raiders might find that he's not quite as integrated that defense is got it and might find a little hole.
- 35:31Well of course Scott's a great veteran villain veteran defensive backs do a lot of things with their head as well as your body and of course you can't expect Bab to be at that point the Raiders short by about two inches.
- 35:41Letten a cop coming back after making a catch hoping to sprint up field did not get the first down on the catcher about two inches three inches short.
- 35:49All right.
- 35:50The second down of the Dolphins with their normal rushing for and then hurt her Fernandez Hines and stand so let me talk wider the left with branch in the slot and off to Hubbard he follows David's throw and he runs it up to the 36 yard line for a first down for
- 35:51So to make the tackle along with Nick one accounting one aspect that we hadn't considered at least on the air here Scotty and that is you recall when the Raiders defeated Miami and entered their win string at Berkeley and they were the first to make the
- 36:07tackle along with Nick one accounting one aspect that we hadn't considered at least on the air here Scotty and that is you recall when the Raiders defeated Miami and entered their win string at Berkeley and early in the 73 season they somewhat nullified the great
- 36:24mobility of one accounting by running a lot of stuff right at him.
- 36:27Of course next great strength is just quickness.
- 36:30He's really not big enough to handle that straight on stuff and that's the only way you can really nullify him if you try and go around and he's just too quick.
- 36:36Now the Dolphins in their 53 rolling to the left of Sabre.
- 36:39Now he sets up fires one to Hubbard over the middle of the 40 Hubbard head down and takes a tackle to the 45.
- 36:46He knocked Mike Poland head over heels.
- 36:51He really slammed him.
- 36:53They were just lobbing a little fast to Hubbard on an early release over the middle.
- 36:58Now we're seeing something we haven't seen with Kenny Sabre most of this year. He is rolling out of there. He's not going straight back now during a good part of this season Kenny had problems with his knees and did not want to do that.
- 37:09We saw Lawrence in there. You saw a role play today. Kenny is rolling.
- 37:12He had lots of time that time that moving pocket up to our standing up in front of them and giving him a good look downfield second and one the regular rushers are back in there not in the 53 anymore ball came out flat left and off the Davis Davis skippers
- 37:26pass the line of credit to the 45.
- 37:28Still on his feet at the 40.
- 37:30He's got down from behind at the 37 yard line by Curtis Johnson.
- 37:34First and 10 open.
- 37:35The first penetration of the day into Miami real estate.
- 37:42Larry ball comes in the Dolphins go to the 53 as Heinz comes out.
- 37:47Hubbard was out in front to lead the blocking that time to let Davis ride by the line of credit and get out there where he can fly.
- 37:54Anderson missed him before he was brought down by Curtis Johnson and the side is finally actually mailing off some of the overhead ball.
- 38:05Here's out of the ball branch to the left. Well let me cut to the right Miami leads at seven nothing 915 remaining we're in quarter number two.
- 38:12The handoff here goes to Davis following Hubbard through but not getting much off the right side at the 35.
- 38:18Matheson on top with Fernandez down below along with Ben Herter stop the play.
- 38:23Jim I don't really couldn't wedge too much that time.
- 38:25They got about a yard and a half Hubbard is carried eight times for 23 yards as he gets his first rest.
- 38:31Davis five times for 31 yards.
- 38:33Vanazak is in second and eight.
- 38:37It's a long eight hour.
- 38:40Bill King with Scottie Sterling.
- 38:42It's a tingly time at the Coliseum in Oakland.
- 38:46Everybody on it.
- 38:47Miami leading seven nothing slot left branch inside the lot.
- 38:51They keep a linebacker out there to try to contain him a little bit handoff.
- 38:55Joseph Anazak slant slant outside left tackle brought down by Stanfield along with Paul who lined up on that side in the orange defense at the 31 yard line the tackle made.
- 39:08Now it'll be a big third down play.
- 39:10But what if we're on third down situations today Oakland two for four.
- 39:14Miami one for four.
- 39:16Stabler thus far has passed Ford successfully for eight four out of eight and with one intercepted Gracie is only one out of three.
- 39:26Clarence Davis comes out and Charlie Smith is in for the Raiders the veteran probably brought a play in.
- 39:34It's third and five and a half on a quick count.
- 39:37They were dropped straight back.
- 40:00A crowd come to the part of the thing that Charlie Smith catches one from 32 yards down the middle the identical pattern and play that first ran and said we're hitting him on against the Dallas Cowboys.
- 40:16Seven six when it tries to equalize it.
- 40:21It's a good time out on the field seven thirty nine to go second quarter scoreboard showing Miami seven Oakland seven.
- 40:34Jack of Echo will kick off from the Raiders 35 moving from our left to our right.
- 40:51He's not going to be able to get a number again rather and he's not got their feet almost at the 39 yard line.
- 41:08The crowd takes up the chance of defense defense.
- 41:22Six to four.
- 41:38Hey Malone who can fly once he gets by that line of scrimmage gets up holding his right by a little bit limping but he comes back to the huddle kick now comes into the ballgame the Dolphins bench spotted that at the first down and Malone really chewed it up that time for 11 yards.
- 42:01The Dolphins break their huddle more Kuchenberg Langer little and Evan left the right in the interior line here's Warfield on the left against William.
- 42:08I guess Wilson to the right more against Jeff Thomas back to the I get this out there get the block drive across the 50 public can't hold him all alone and he's helped from Connors down at the 46 yard line of Oakland.
- 42:19Norm Evans firing out at right tackle giving Zonka a little running room that time and they get him rumbling again Zonka at this moment has made 28 yards on eight carries Malone 24 on five trips.
- 42:33Three Zia's from three times completed one for 16 any stables standing in the sideline hoping the defense can contain here after he got the Raiders on the board.
- 42:49Jeff Jeff the backs into a split second down and for the handoff to kick and he finds his way down to the 44 yard line over the right side.
- 43:03Now mandates coming in there'll be third and short yardage so they go to double tight ends taking more out of there and Benny Malone comes back in the backfield replacing.
- 43:14Now the Dolphins in the past bill have been known again on this situation third and short bring two tight ends in and go to that all familiar play fake it started here in Oakland and went to Green Bay and it's taught many a team and playoff games they've done it on this field position.
- 43:27It's not the Raiders in the Super Bowl in 67 to Max McGee from right from start all set now.
- 43:47Thomas had a piece of him couldn't bring him down until they got more help and we'll pause 10 seconds for station identification. This is the Oakland Raiders football network.
- 44:06The right is Warfield to the right is more and again to Zonka and Zonka slams over the left guard. He really didn't have any daylight he ran over irons and kept shoving and just crashing in until he was slowed down and brought to a halt down low.
- 44:22The guy who had the biggest part of him was sister. He was stopped at about the 32 yard line it'll be second and seven.
- 44:31The
- 44:35first half or five to go now the clock picks down to the four minute mark flat lab second down seven for Miami Raiders. I'd like to get a takeaway here more in motion out to the right Thomas follows him across.
- 44:48Greasy gives here to Malone and Malone slices doesn't get much brought down at the 30 yard line by Monty Johnson who was in the orange defense that time now it'll come up third and five and they bring man that you into the ballgame for flooding.
- 45:01He'll run with one tight end the two wide receivers and with kick coming in in the backfield kick offers two possibilities. Very good blocker with Zonka for protection for Greasy but also they throw to him.
- 45:15Last time they kept them in as a blocker on the right side of the greasy. We'll see what they do this time. Very good receiver Raiders orange defense Monty Johnson lines up on the defensive left side.
- 45:26Warfield on the left against Wilson to the right more against Thomas.
- 45:31They don't keep man they sent him out. He fired over the middle he got kicked. He got the first down on the 24.
- 45:38Connors had him covered but kicked made the catch Connors dropped him in his track just landing out from the backfield turning and waiting for the quick greasy release.
- 45:48So the Dolphins come up with the right play and now they're getting within field goal range.
- 45:52The premium this year has not had the kind of a year he did last year of course none of the field goal kickers have had as many opportunities. Garrow is nine for 15 he's hit only once beyond 40 yards in five prize and that was at 43 as long for the year.
- 46:08If they were to field goal kick from this position it would be longer than that. Warfield on the left more to the right back goes Tracy shutting up.
- 46:17He's going deep tomorrow and Paul but he is under his belt. Thomas fell on the side when more minutes cut to the corner at the goal line.
- 46:26But the ball was under thrown or he had an easy fix and Bill you have to credit pass rush because of that greasy was under big pressure.
- 46:32He really couldn't see more. He didn't have good balance when he threw he was in a backing up position because of that rush and was skip Thomas going down and he had had time that would have been seven.
- 46:42And Sheila from all of their other sidelines considering the meaning of that.
- 46:48If they were to kick right now field goal it would be we're saying about 47 yards bandages in so they've got three men they can go to two wide receivers the tight end along in the backfield with Saka Warfield comes left out to the right is more was kept
- 47:03playing him head up and coming across the line of scrimmage with Tom the handoff to stop a shot that the line of scrimmage gets up and tries to run some more. He was stopped at the 25 hour round on a line.
- 47:14He thought he wasn't touched or if Jones had just drunk and hit him and wrapped him he must have thought he ran into his old man and hadn't been touched by a silver and black clad football player coming to the two minute warning now it'll be third and 10 for the
- 47:26Dolphins on the Raider 25 and there is a timeout signal. Two minute warning going to both benches with two minutes remaining.
- 47:34Second quarter scoreboard showing Miami seven Oakland seven.
- 47:42This is a down bill that also has to hold it third and 10 at the Raider 25. They hold on this down it'll mean about a 42 yard field goal by your premium. As you pointed out he hasn't been all that accurate when he gets into that range this year.
- 47:56Yeah, I think I may have said 47 a few moments ago that was an error I'm sorry it's 42 you're right they would spotted in about the 32 yard line.
- 48:05Now the Dolphins bring nottingham in the Raiders bring money Johnson out.
- 48:13Oakland still has only three rushers they go to give me Warren a fifth defensive back nottingham came in for a soccer. He's in the backfield of kick warfield of the left more to the right.
- 48:23The tight end is managed. It is third and 10 long count by greasy guy Texas man got back into the pocket setting up lots of time. Nobody open. I've got a lot of guys that they can back to the right.
- 48:37He's still running. He finally unloaded behind the line of spinach the nottingham he's at the 25 at the 20 he drives down to the 16 yard line.
- 48:44Short of the first down. Skip Thomas and Connors got him. Greasy extricated himself from a difficult situation.
- 48:54Looking left looking right the Raiders had everything covered but nottingham came back to the area where greasy had retreated to the right made the catch it found some running room and now your premium is in for the possible three pointer and he surely got a better shot at it that he would have been able to
- 49:10get that greasy. It'll be marked and spotted at the 24 yard line. We're down to one 13 to go on the first quarter more of a hole. So it'll be a 34 yard attempt on the little left footed.
- 49:20The free up. The kick on the way. It is good. And so from 34 yards Garrow your premium untied this football game. The Raiders from the standpoint of scrimmage play have blocked the Dolphins virtually to a standstill. They have kept them out of the end zone.
- 49:41The big factor of course in Miami's getting on the board early was the earliest possible one that more around the kickoff back 89 yards to start the game. So we have a minute and one second left to go in the second quarter.
- 50:02Your premium will kick off the Raiders will have heart back along with Ron Smith up on the way. You have that as that Casper when he get in banks and now the Dolphins have a flight play edge 26 to the Raiders 23 they have seven first downs to open.
- 50:18The Raiders still have a yardage advantage in the game totally of one twenty nine to ninety four. Your premium advances on the ball kicks it high but not really waiting for it hard on the 11 along with that I think that it's funny the 25 exposed straight ahead of the 30
- 50:33sucky and bad knocking down and it'll be perhaps the 31 with a lot of Raiders now in their two minute offense of which only 57 seconds is left takeover their field positions today have not been very advantageous for their various offensive takeovers respectively their own 31 their own 13 their own 20 their own 22 and again their own 31.
- 50:56Miami possessions began on the Miami 48 the Miami 20 the Oakland 44 in the Miami 37. The Miami has had a field position advantage most of the day. Branch wide to the left. They bring me linebacker ball out there in the orange defense to help cover him and off to
- 51:11Hubbard now Hubbard cruises off right tackle slowed by math and he breaks out of his grasp but gets up to the 37 before it's finally been heard or to pin him along with Manny Fernandez the clock running 45 seconds Raiders have all timeouts left they were users one right now.
- 51:28Against a team like Miami right now they're in a real pretty tough situation not quite enough time to wedge that thing down to get a real good shot at a field goal but still there is time if you make the right play but it has to come off much more quickly and with fewer areas for
- 51:45errors. So I noticed that John Vela right tackle seems to be limping just a little bit as he got up from that play now a couple of weeks ago had an ankle problem which he's recovered from fairly well but he was limping just a little bit he stayed in the game so apparently it's OK.
- 52:02You make a good point. The two minute drill against a team like Miami becomes a very very difficult thing. Discipline in the secondary which means they stayed in the places where they're supposed to stay. They sometimes quite their instincts to go to a different area and they remain very tight in their cover.
- 52:17So I don't think you'll see open table move them on quite as well as they did for instance in that game against Cincinnati. Now the Raiders back to the huddle the line of scrimmage of the open 38 but often
- 52:28continuing their orange defense with three rockers and they bring me the extra linebacker ball out on branches side each time. Smith in motion to the right leading Hubbard behind Stabler Stabler back to pass.
- 52:40Got time. Good one down the middle. Freddy's got it. Well let me count to 50 and he's knocked out at the 46 hit there by Mike Colin and Nick Guanacati. Highlight called 32 seconds.
- 52:51Now the Raiders have only one more time out left. Let's look at Glenda for the year. Glenda from the field goal standpoint was 11 for 17 in the regular season. His longest was 49 and George had two out of five beyond the 40 range.
- 53:07Get one from 41 one from 49. So if they were to have to go along his percentage on the season was a little bit better than that if you're premium in the long ranges. Kenny Bravo now is one time I'll remain is to attempt to get some yardage without using that time out and that obviously means something over to the sidelines for the receiver might go out of bounds.
- 53:29But the thing is Miami defense knows that as well as you and I've got here they they play that pretty tough. That's what you recall in the great Cincinnati comeback.
- 53:37They were had a little more time on his side and the sidelines were so well covered by the Cincinnati defense that he came down the middle to more on two big catches risking the clock running in order to get bigger jumps the yardage for a man was in a rather open area.
- 53:50They might go down the middle now have opened made the decision to go for the field goal if you see something open down the middle deep enough they might could go that way and then use that one time out before the kick.
- 53:59Thirty two seconds left 10 7 Miami we're in the late second quarter now to swap to the left branch inside the lead they got back to a stabler to pass.
- 54:06He looks back to the right with a path it's complete and he gets out of bounds or gets out on the 37 in front of emphasis or in a short pattern after they had hovered deep at Charlie Smith deep ahead Baliknikov deep.
- 54:23Now with 25 seconds left to go after the ex Stanford stars grab the Raiders on the 37 that means that would be a 55 yard field goal attempt. That's not a good percentage needless to say.
- 54:36So they need more yardage here and the time 25 seconds. Vanizak comes into the backfield replacing Hubbard. Excuse me Bill. A key now would be to get one more.
- 54:45Nine eight even a seven yard pick up out of bounds you still would have one time out and about 20 seconds left on the clock. They're in good shape right now. They get one more completion goal out of the branch to the left.
- 54:57Well I think after the right neighbor back that's not big rush this time. He's probably dropped at the 44 yard line.
- 55:04But he was covered and Kenny had not enough time to have a real second look as Dan Hurter and Stan Phil converged on him. Larry ball is in again on the orange defense of a
- 55:18set now to defend the rate against the Raiders three rushers.
- 55:22They didn't take the time out the clock now running back is saber to pass lays it off to the right. This says it's a 45 head for the sideline bumps out at the 41. I had thought they'd taken a timeout. I looked up and the clock was stopped and the officials stopped the clock while everybody was getting back.
- 55:38The Raiders pretty much stymied here now at the 40.
- 55:42And what do we got. Hey guys coming in the punch. It's fourth down. All on the 40 10 to seven Miami leading.
- 55:54Six seconds remaining second quarter in Detroit in the exhibition season. It's very same situation the up back Mark Van Eegens took a direct snap from center and went 63 yards to a touchdown.
- 56:12And again is the up blocking back again.
- 56:15Dave Darby over the ball just in case that should be to set it off and didn't drop anybody back guy takes a snap and he kicks it. He aims one for the right coffin corner but it just farther in from the sideline goes into the end zone.
- 56:27And with no time left.
- 56:29The ball is just down by the Raiders Harold hard as the gun sounds ending the first half of play and the scoreboard show that half time in the ASE first round playoff battle.
- 56:42Miami 10 open seven.
- 56:45I'll hide on the return of Gary your premiums kickoff the Raiders moving from our left to our right receiving to start the second half trailing 10 seven they have not led Henry Stuckey made the stop that time.
- 56:58And so it'll be first since then open.
- 57:01Bill and Miami Dolphins during the 14 game regular season gave up progressively more points as a game war on and the first period they gave up 31 this is total for the year then 50 in the second period 57 in the third and 78 in the fourth quarter of their games.
- 57:15They mark this ball at approximately the open 20 years branch slots right inside the let me call play fake Stabler on a broken play I think falls down at the 26. He went back as if to hand to Hubbard who just went right by him. Jenny kept the ball and try to get back to the line of scrimmage but lost two yards.
- 57:31Not an auspicious way to begin the second half of play.
- 57:36Raider receivers but let me cop caught three Charlie spent to Hubbard and more one each and branch one. Their big completion was to Smith and I was in the books as 31 I said 32 yards at the time of the play and it was between the 31 and 32 yard line they credited 31 yards.
- 57:52Miami Orange defense ball is in winds up on the left side. Stabler gets the Davis sent me to the left now trying to sweep behind upshot cuts behind the block. He's up to the 35 and is still on his feet when the players blown dead with a host of dolphins hugging and grabbing at it.
- 58:07Davis with a good move made a full spin that time as he cut up behind the upshot block.
- 58:13Bob Moore was out on that side also.
- 58:17Don Schuller who's been through the mill so many times looking on from the dolphin sideline.
- 58:24His Miami teams eight and two in playoffs.
- 58:28And of course they won three in a row each of the last two years to win the two Super Bowl titles back to back.
- 58:33Stabler coming up to an important third and four he's back to pass good blocking. He rifles one the branch can't hold it broken up by Colin, who came up in the zone over the middle at the 40 yard line and jolted cliff just as he tried to get a handle on the ball.
- 58:46Good defense.
- 58:48Dolphins come up with a big play and guy comes into punt.
- 58:51In the first half.
- 58:54Guy funded three times for an average of 41 cycle of the dolphins three times 31.70 average dropping back deep now will be Nat Moore, a rookie from Florida on the 20 yard line he's returned nine points this year for an average of 15 per kick now bab and Anderson will be the short back to the 40.
- 59:14Guys checking this line of scrimmages at the Oakland 35 Dave Dolby snaps it.
- 59:19Yeah, I get into the front and drills one rather well but not too high taken by more than 21 starts the right after hesitation he's missed by Hudson who may have been clipped.
- 59:28He comes back in his mouth at the 21. No flag went down. Harold Hart got him after Hudson.
- 59:34It looks like Hudson might have gotten clipped by Benny Malone on that play but they didn't call it.
- 59:39The effort by Hudson, which sent more to the right drove him into the arms of heart.
- 59:4944 yard punt by guy. All right, the dolphins this second deepest in their own territory that they've taken over the football.
- 59:59More to the left with Warfield in the slot with soccer and
- 1:00:05the back hand off to Zonka gets a block from Malone back to the inside and he stopped by iron.
- 1:00:10He got to about the 24 though. Zonka wanted to go outside the tackle.
- 1:00:14Mommy Johnson is in on the orange defense prevented that and Zonka and trying to adjust was brought down by Irons inside.
- 1:00:23So it'll be second down and seven is not just still got three.
- 1:00:33Here's Langer to the ball at center. Raiders keep our times over the center.
- 1:00:39He's been that way most of the day. Mommy Johnson lined up on the left side.
- 1:00:43Now the Dolphins have Warfield only a couple of yards out to the left. They get to Zonka and he smashes over the right side.
- 1:00:49He's thrown back from the 27 where his forward progress was.
- 1:00:53Mommy Johnson the obvious fan but he had a lot of help down below from Tom's and Sistrunk.
- 1:00:58Really jammed it pretty well. It'll be third down and about four and a half is managed. The tight end comes in for Mar Fleming.
- 1:01:05Fleming incidentally wears a diamond in his left ear. I didn't get that clear fight Scotty whether he wears it in the game or not. I doubt it.
- 1:01:11I don't know. I'll tell you what he's wearing in the other rear though.
- 1:01:13It's a little bit of Jack Tatum's words because on two plays ago Tatum went after Fleming and he was sticking that finger right in his face and letting them know the next time whatever it was he did that Jack would retaliate.
- 1:01:23Warfield on the left more to the right. A big third down four play for the Dolphins now.
- 1:01:27Back he goes. Both backs in the block. Greasy fires down the middle. Got it down. A great play by Connors.
- 1:01:33He was going for Mandich at the 40. His clutch receiver in these situations.
- 1:01:38George Edgerton was with him but it was Connors who made the beautiful diving deflection of the pass.
- 1:01:44They really wanted that when they kept those backs in. Let Greasy get a good look at Mandich.
- 1:01:53So it'll be Cypher into punt. He's not a long punter. He's a good high hanger. Average is only 38 plus on the year.
- 1:02:00The deep man Ron Smith the short man or Hudson and hard at the 50. The line is Grimmage. Miami's 28 and the boot.
- 1:02:07It's high not very deep. Hanging. Good coverage. Smith takes it in the 38 and he can't get going.
- 1:02:12He's at the 40 yard line. Three of the Dolphins were down there.
- 1:02:17The first one there was Lloyd Mumford followed by Ed Newman and then Langer himself the center. Good coverage.
- 1:02:23Mumford is the captain of course of the Dolphins special team. The Raiders take over at their 40.
- 1:02:28Time out on the field. 1143 left in the third quarter. The scoreboard showing Miami 10 Oakland 7.
- 1:02:41Now the sun beaming brightly on about half of the field which is still not shaded by the western rim of the Coliseum.
- 1:02:48The Raiders have their best takeover field position of the day on their own 40.
- 1:02:53Let me come to the left with Grant Slotted out there.
- 1:02:56Stabler play fakes back to pass with time to throw. He fires one at Fred Scott at the 45.
- 1:03:02Down to the 40. He's hit and he's dropped at that point. I thought he'd fumble for a moment but he held on.
- 1:03:07Knocked down by Mike Colen the linebacker with Curtis Johnson.
- 1:03:11Politikoff was all alone under that zone in that area. They were playing deep for Grant.
- 1:03:16Fred cut his pattern off short to leave him plenty of receiving room.
- 1:03:20And Bill we had talked here at times. Kenny during the season might be a little lazy on those throws but not in this game and not on that one.
- 1:03:26He really pegged that. I've never seen him throw that ball with more velocity than he did that time.
- 1:03:31Larry Ball comes in. Miami goes to the orange with three rushers. Ball lines up on the left side. Mathis in the other linebacker in the outside goes to the right.
- 1:03:39Speaking defensively, Stabler on a straight drop back. Gets the blocking up in the pocket going deep to Politikoff down the right side with Foley.
- 1:03:45Foley back into the air. Politikoff makes the catch but he's down a bound. Holy, what a play.
- 1:03:52Foley and Politikoff between the five and the goal line went up. Foley got a piece of the ball. It charmed into the end zone.
- 1:03:59Politikoff followed it and caught it but was ruled open out of bounds on the play. Madden is berating the official.
- 1:04:14Politikoff's perhaps six inches of the front part of his left foot out of bounds. We looked at that on the replay.
- 1:04:22It was an excellent call. It was one which if you didn't have the replay advantage you'd probably be for that.
- 1:04:27Fred is out. Frank Pitz, the veteran, is in. Wide to the left. Branch in the slot second and ten.
- 1:04:32Here's Davis now. Scooters for the hole gets to the 38 over the left side. Upended by Fernandez.
- 1:04:39And Mike Cohen put the ball on the 37. What a play that would have been had Fred been able to keep that left foot six inches further in but it was impossible.
- 1:04:54Larry Ball comes out and they bring in an extra defensive back this time with Stuckey. Henry Stuckey is back in the game.
- 1:05:01Five defensive backs. Vanizek is in for Hubbard for the Raiders. Branch to the left.
- 1:05:07Well then they got to the right. We're third and seven. Big play. Davis in motion to the right with his shoulder pad hanging out.
- 1:05:12Back is Stabler. He throws underneath to Moore. Forts a 35. Dive! Did he get the first down? I don't know.
- 1:05:19He was stopped by Stuckey. He was scrambling on his elbows trying for that yardage.
- 1:05:24Wanekani is over there. Madden is right over the ball which is near this near western sideline.
- 1:05:32He's making sure nobody frudges an inch on it. Wanekani was there with Stuckey to make the stop.
- 1:05:38They're going to bring the chain gang in from the opposite side of the field. It's a very pivotal measurement.
- 1:05:43Ten-seven Miami. A lot of time left in this football game. Nine-fifty-six to go in the third quarter.
- 1:05:49Can't see the measurement at all here. It's the first down!
- 1:05:54Mark Moore with a scrambling, flying effort after making that catch in these short patterns to the right sideline.
- 1:06:01Marvin Hubbard getting some attention on the side from Dr. Rosenfeld. Or at least standing with him.
- 1:06:07Dr. Reedy is there too. They're working, looks like on Marv's left wrist down underneath.
- 1:06:12Down below is here by the Raider fans. First and ten at the 30-yard line of the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:06:18The Raiders scored from 31 yards on a perfectly played pass by Stabler to Charlie Smith in the second quarter.
- 1:06:24Play face. Stabler back. Got time. Hesitates. Looks. Good coverage.
- 1:06:28An incomplete pass intended for Baletnikov who was picked up in the middle at the 20 by Cullen.
- 1:06:33And Stabler missed on the play as Cullen did a good job that time.
- 1:06:37Boy these Dolphins can cover you. They can really cover you.
- 1:06:41Jenny had great blocking that time but couldn't find the open man because there wasn't such animal out there.
- 1:06:47I'll tell you, he's putting a lot of heat on the Dolphins, Bill. And they are very, very good back there.
- 1:06:51But he's passing on first down. This drive started at the Raider 40. He went to Baletnikov on first down, 420.
- 1:06:58The next time it came up first down he passed. That time on first down he passed. So he's got these Dolphins thinking pass.
- 1:07:03Dolphins in the orange. Slot right. Smith with Banizak in the backfield. Banizak blazes off right tackle.
- 1:07:09Times down to the 20 yard line. He's put there by Ball.
- 1:07:13Banizak on a fast start.
- 1:07:16And Scott and you and I were talking about that early. George Wheeler led very well that time.
- 1:07:21Hubbard has not seemed to start rather quickly today.
- 1:07:24And Banizak's always been a quick starter off the ball. And that made a difference here.
- 1:07:27And of course on that play it was exactly that. Pete's quick start.
- 1:07:31Marv although very strong runner today. Not really that quick off the ball as he usually is.
- 1:07:36Maybe he's got a little bit of a leg problem we aren't aware of. But he was not really quick off the ball.
- 1:07:40They bring the four rushers in. Hines replaces Ball.
- 1:07:43The Raiders come up about a half yard short of the first down there.
- 1:07:46And now it's Davis and Banizak in the backfield. Two quick starters.
- 1:07:50It's third and short. Hand off to Davis.
- 1:07:53Ball is down to the 15. Up in the 12 yard line.
- 1:07:58Kip by Babb in the backfield. And Anderson.
- 1:08:01And the Raiders now moving the football. And moving the Dolphins more importantly.
- 1:08:05The ball on the 18 where it's marked.
- 1:08:08First and 10 open.
- 1:08:10Clarence Davis has ripped for 52 yards and 8 carries.
- 1:08:17At halftime Clarence had had 32 in 5 carries.
- 1:08:20So he's peeled off 20 yards and 3 tries in this third quarter.
- 1:08:24Stuckey is in. They have 5 defensive backs.
- 1:08:27Branch to the left. The let me cross to the right.
- 1:08:29Saber back on a straight drop back. Looking to the end zone.
- 1:08:32But he throws underneath and Moore can't hold it at the 10 yard line.
- 1:08:35Moore slamming out underneath at the 10.
- 1:08:38Might have led him a little bit too far. But it's one that Bob normally would have had.
- 1:08:46So it'll be second and 10. That would have been a nice big catch for the Raiders.
- 1:08:51Because he would have had perhaps to the 5 yard line before anybody could really nail it.
- 1:08:57Oakland several times during the year in this field position down inside the opponent's 15.
- 1:09:02Have had a very very effective tight end passing game.
- 1:09:05That's why Moore was wide open to throw a little bit off.
- 1:09:07And Bobby should have probably had that.
- 1:09:09But on the 13 second and 10.
- 1:09:11Saber back. Looks left. Throws right.
- 1:09:13But let me cross. A wiki catch.
- 1:09:15Touchdown Oakland. Holy carito.
- 1:09:18Frank Belepnikoff just made a miracle catch.
- 1:09:21Put Tim Foley all over it.
- 1:09:32Ziegler did a good job of looking off the defense.
- 1:09:35But the ball which was actually deflected once off Belepnikoff's hand.
- 1:09:39When Foley contested it.
- 1:09:41And the right side line of the end zone was grabbed back by Fred.
- 1:09:45As Foley took his pressure on.
- 1:09:47Landed on top of him. And now Blanda. The conversion try is up. It is.
- 1:09:53Good. And for the first time the Oakland Raiders win the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:09:57Time out of the field. 8.05 left.
- 1:09:59We're in the third quarter.
- 1:10:01Scoreboard shows Oakland 14 Miami 10.
- 1:10:05Nat Moore and Hubert Ginn are back to await the Jacovenko kickoff.
- 1:10:09As George will kick off from our left to our right.
- 1:10:13The Raiders have taken the lead on that 13 yard strike from Stabler to Belepnikoff.
- 1:10:17As Fred is giving a clinic out here today.
- 1:10:21And here is the boot.
- 1:10:25It's a line drive. It's taking off.
- 1:10:27And the left side line is up.
- 1:10:29And the right side line is up.
- 1:10:31And here is the boot. It's a line drive that's kicked sideways.
- 1:10:35Taken by Ginn at the 10. Up to the 15. To the 20. To the 25.
- 1:10:39Fred ahead. And now by Moore to the 35.
- 1:10:41I'm sorry I said Ginn. It was Nat Moore.
- 1:10:45Moore carried out to the 35 before he was finally overhauled by Monte Johnson.
- 1:10:49And it's a good return to get the Dolphins decent operating position field wise.
- 1:10:55By the way Fred Belepnikoff has caught five of Stabler's 11 completions for 73 yards today.
- 1:11:00Kenny 11 for 19.
- 1:11:02Gracie is 3 for 6 as he brings it off and up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:11:08Warfield to the left.
- 1:11:11Nat Moore to the right.
- 1:11:16Schonka in the backfield with Malone.
- 1:11:18Hand off to Malone.
- 1:11:19Shirting line to the right.
- 1:11:20Gets a block from Little at the 35.
- 1:11:22And he goes out of bounds at the 43.
- 1:11:24Good sweep that time.
- 1:11:26Larry Little pulling is...
- 1:11:28He's one of the excellent pulling guards in football and leading Malone around the right side.
- 1:11:33Benny Malone coming out of Arizona State.
- 1:11:35A rookie. 5'10", 193.
- 1:11:38He took over when Mercury Morris continued to have problems with injuries.
- 1:11:42He's the brother of Art Malone.
- 1:11:44The Dolphins who up to this point have confined their running game pretty much inside the tackles.
- 1:11:48Hoping now to spread Oakland's defense a little bit.
- 1:11:50Perhaps weaken up that middle and get Schonka in there for some key ground as they went with Malone to the outside on the sweep.
- 1:11:56Second and one right now.
- 1:11:58They keep Warfield in tight and put Morally about a yard out to the right.
- 1:12:01Now they bring Malone out to the left, leaving Schonka alone in the backfield.
- 1:12:06And a play fake.
- 1:12:07Breezy now pulling one out of the bag.
- 1:12:09He's in trouble.
- 1:12:10Chased by Horace Jones.
- 1:12:11Went to the right.
- 1:12:12He's pinned in by Monty Johnson who misses it.
- 1:12:14He's up the right side of the 40 and goes out of bounds with a first down in Oakland territory at the Raider 48 yard line.
- 1:12:20And Breezy's elusiveness.
- 1:12:22A ten-proge and nemesis for the Raiders.
- 1:12:24He made a great play last year in a situation in which he seemed to be trapped.
- 1:12:28Ultimately his escape in that situation led to a big touchdown for the Dolphins.
- 1:12:33Now Monty Johnson who is not a greatly experienced player.
- 1:12:36This is his first year with a lot of playing time.
- 1:12:38Committed himself that time and I'm sure the Raider staff would rather have had him just contain Breezy and not commit himself.
- 1:12:44Breezy put that move on him after Monty Moore had made a strong move to him and that was probably the error.
- 1:12:49The Raiders were not fooled however by the deception of passing on second and short which often can be a great quarterback coup.
- 1:12:56Now they're in Raider territory.
- 1:12:58First down.
- 1:12:59Backs in the I formation.
- 1:13:00Breezy gives to Zonka.
- 1:13:01He rambles off right guard and carries Peckler's down to the 40.
- 1:13:05Zonka again behind Larry Little that time with Norm Evans assisting.
- 1:13:09Opening the hole.
- 1:13:10It was finally Sistrunk the last of the Raiders to join the pack to bring him down.
- 1:13:15So the Dolphins trailing for the first time.
- 1:13:1714-10 responding smartly.
- 1:13:20Zonka is out.
- 1:13:21Nottingham is in.
- 1:13:28Dolphins break their huddle.
- 1:13:29Come up to the ball just outside the 40.
- 1:13:31Breezy the cool customer of eight NFL seasons.
- 1:13:35Sends Warfield left against Wilson.
- 1:13:37Moore to the right against Thomas.
- 1:13:42The handoff to Benny Malone who drives for the first time but he was in motion.
- 1:13:47I think there's no doubt about it.
- 1:13:48That's right.
- 1:13:49The flag fell.
- 1:13:50Benny Malone a rookie a little bit over anxious.
- 1:13:53The pressure of playoff football is something even players who haven't been here but have played time can't realize.
- 1:14:00Malone a rookie.
- 1:14:01He's got a couple of hundred yard games this year.
- 1:14:02He's filled in admirably for Morris.
- 1:14:04But there was the anxiety.
- 1:14:05That's right.
- 1:14:06Players just don't understand the kind of pressure that comes in a playoff.
- 1:14:09Even if you've been in the league seven eight nine ten years if you've not been here when you do get here you can feel the pressure.
- 1:14:14And obviously this is one of the great strengths of the Miami team by and large.
- 1:14:18They've been in so many big games.
- 1:14:19They're very cool.
- 1:14:20As you pointed out.
- 1:14:21Greasy.
- 1:14:22He's down now by four points but he's in command.
- 1:14:24He knows exactly what he's doing.
- 1:14:26Second and seven incidentally Miami's ratio of rushes to pass is 80 percent rushes 20 passes today on the season.
- 1:14:33They were two to one two rushes to every pass.
- 1:14:36Sixty seven percent thirty three percent.
- 1:14:39Now they split the tight end and back to pass goes Gracie.
- 1:14:42He loves he's going deep to man to do more weight on the left side to go through his hand at the five yard line.
- 1:14:47More guts behind.
- 1:14:48Skip Thomas.
- 1:14:52Or he can fly and skip Thomas lost a little bit to him at the five more have the day like the ball went through his hand.
- 1:15:00Gracie put it as much on the money as any man could ever hope to do.
- 1:15:06And three men out wide at the outset of that play and a little bit different set than he showed.
- 1:15:11Of course what they like to do normally with Warfield is get you in that one on one situation.
- 1:15:15Or who's had a tremendous year for the Dolphins coming in as a rookie and they had people injured.
- 1:15:20He's doing a great job.
- 1:15:21But the Gracie is very very good at forcing you into that kind of a defense.
- 1:15:25Oakland now making a change.
- 1:15:26Johnson coming out and Jimmy Warren going in as a fifth defense back.
- 1:15:29Three rushers three linebackers five defensive backs it's third and seven.
- 1:15:33Big play again.
- 1:15:35Jim Langer over the ball.
- 1:15:36They bring more wide to the left with Warfield in the clock.
- 1:15:39The backs are kicked and nodding hand.
- 1:15:41Back pedaling is racing into the pocket.
- 1:15:43Hey look he's got time.
- 1:15:45He's going deep up the right side.
- 1:15:46Villepiano covering and called for pass interference.
- 1:15:50The ball was thrown five yards away from the receiver.
- 1:15:53Villepiano had him covered all the way up the right sideline.
- 1:15:56The park fell for pass interference at the 15.
- 1:15:59Villepiano protesting his cause to no avail.
- 1:16:02I'd like to see the replay on that.
- 1:16:05I'm not saying I doubted it purely that it was on the far side of the field from us.
- 1:16:09And difficult to really see how the contact came.
- 1:16:12Those watching on television see Villepiano following and covering.
- 1:16:16He did push with the right hand.
- 1:16:18It was a token push but I think technically it was proper call.
- 1:16:23It's the kind of a play Scotty that if it's not called a lot of people aren't surprised.
- 1:16:29Yeah obviously Bill you get as you say and describe very well it was a token push.
- 1:16:34Now you get a lot of pushing like that on almost any play when people are running those ups.
- 1:16:37Raiders have been penalized 59 yards to Miami's 15 and there could be the pivotal play of the game.
- 1:16:43That penalty puts the Dolphins on the open 16.
- 1:16:47The fans boo.
- 1:16:48The Dolphins walk away from the huddle.
- 1:16:50Greasy is going to make sure he's going to be heard.
- 1:16:52Dan Connors over talking to the referee.
- 1:17:02I'm not sure the Dolphins brought them.
- 1:17:06They brought Tom Wicker off the field.
- 1:17:08Wicker is a special teams man and a backup offensive tackle.
- 1:17:11He's walking over here to this side and coming to go into the locker room for some reason.
- 1:17:15And apparently there was a protest but he went off the field the wrong way.
- 1:17:19I think Dan Connors looking for some kind of an edge a penalty against the Dolphins.
- 1:17:23Saw the guy walking off and went up the official and said he came off the wrong side.
- 1:17:27I don't think he did.
- 1:17:28I think he went around the field and Dan Connors coming off the side.
- 1:17:31Now the fans set up the chorus and the Raider defense really on the spot now.
- 1:17:36Greasy operating on the open 16 trailing by four.
- 1:17:42Greasy back into the pocket.
- 1:17:43Backs that way.
- 1:17:44Here comes the rush.
- 1:17:45He rifles it.
- 1:17:46A man falls all alone.
- 1:17:47Warfield makes the catch for a touchdown for Miami.
- 1:17:51Falling was Neymar Wilson as Warfield made his corner pattern move into the deep left corner of the end zone.
- 1:17:57All Greasy had to do was keep from falling down or having a heart attack.
- 1:18:01He could have thrown the ball into the air anywhere in an area of eight or ten yards and Warfield could have run under it.
- 1:18:06And Greasy lobbed it up to make sure that he gave him room.
- 1:18:09And so Paul Warfield, a man who so often gets free to break the heart of opponents, did so this time when Wilson slipped on the cut.
- 1:18:19And now the Dolphins lead it 16 to 14.
- 1:18:21The premium trying to make it a three point lead.
- 1:18:28Snap, the spot.
- 1:18:30The kick is blocked.
- 1:18:31Bob Hudson, I believe, blocks it from the right wing.
- 1:18:34The kick is blocked.
- 1:18:36We'll check on the identity for sure.
- 1:18:39It looked like Hudson.
- 1:18:40Time is out on the field.
- 1:18:41638 to go, third quarter.
- 1:18:43Scoreboard shows Miami 16, Oakland 14.
- 1:18:48The premium will kick off now.
- 1:18:50The official credit has gone to Bubba Smith who had the push on up the middle on that conversion.
- 1:18:55Hudson crossed right in front of Bubba.
- 1:18:57And if we had the binoculars on it, it appeared it was Hudson.
- 1:19:00But that's a mistake that's easily made up here.
- 1:19:02I've done it before when Bubba got one and I thought it was the wingman who got it.
- 1:19:05Here's the kickoff now by your premium, Ron Smith waiting stationary.
- 1:19:08Picks it on the 5, down to the 15.
- 1:19:10He's at the 20.
- 1:19:11He's to the left.
- 1:19:12Break through a hole and then it's blocked at the 32.
- 1:19:14There was daylight seconding for Ron Smith until he was suddenly cut down by Lloyd Mumford.
- 1:19:23Chula looks a little concerned that there was that much hole there.
- 1:19:28And Mumford saved the bacon.
- 1:19:30So the Raiders have good field position.
- 1:19:32Not great but good at the 32 yard line, their territory.
- 1:19:35The margin of difference now is 2 points.
- 1:19:38If it comes down to that sort of an increment, the Raiders might be able to win with a field goal.
- 1:19:43Stabler back to pass.
- 1:19:44Setting up all the time in the world.
- 1:19:46He fires one and it's broken up.
- 1:19:47Branch was hammered hard by Blount County at the 47.
- 1:19:51The fans hollering for the interference call.
- 1:19:54But Blount County though he hit him hard, hit him legally the official said.
- 1:20:01I said Stabler's been getting super pass protection.
- 1:20:06He had all the time in the world.
- 1:20:07I'll tell you what, if there was a penalty on his replay, it should have gone against Branch to be quite honest with you.
- 1:20:12Perth had to come back and in order to come back to the ball, he had to try to get around Blount County and he initiated the contact.
- 1:20:20Now to the left, Malembek off with Branch in the slot.
- 1:20:22We're second and 10.
- 1:20:23Stabler throwing that time on first down against Davis.
- 1:20:25Davis runs in at trouble off the left side and is buried.
- 1:20:28He made almost nothing.
- 1:20:30Danville and Fernandez really cracking through with the Dolphins now taking the lead.
- 1:20:35Also find their defense.
- 1:20:37Containing the Raiders, Stabler had the Dolphin defenders really off balance in the last drive.
- 1:20:41Hubbard comes out now.
- 1:20:50Vanizak is in for Marv.
- 1:20:56Stabler over the ball.
- 1:21:00Charlie Smith is in for Clarence Davis.
- 1:21:02Stabler going to pass.
- 1:21:03He's back.
- 1:21:04He's looking.
- 1:21:05He's in trouble.
- 1:21:06He's dropped by Larry Ball back on the 22-yard line.
- 1:21:09Stabler suffers a sacking of the Raiders.
- 1:21:12Run into all sorts of trouble with a Dolphin defense that has suddenly stabilized.
- 1:21:17Miami leading 16-14 as Guy comes in with a punting team.
- 1:21:21The early part of this second half, Oakland took the momentum.
- 1:21:24They had that touchdown, but the Dolphins came back with one.
- 1:21:26They ate it tremendously by that passing of Fernandez ball against Filipino.
- 1:21:29When they went to the lead now, their defense knows they have to protect it.
- 1:21:32So they've got to live from that score.
- 1:21:33Now it's up to Oakland to try and get that momentum back.
- 1:21:36Dolphins dropped Matt Moore deep on his own 30.
- 1:21:41Here's the kick and it's swiped by Ray Guy.
- 1:21:44It's coming up to midfield.
- 1:21:45It hit, bounced down the right sideline.
- 1:21:47A great big break for the Raiders and goes out of bounds on the 41.
- 1:21:50Anderson couldn't feel it.
- 1:21:52Guy really hit the ball poorly.
- 1:21:55Last time he sliced one not so badly, but this time it came off the side of the foot.
- 1:22:01And he got the break on the roll, however.
- 1:22:04So it'll be first and 10, but again the Dolphins with good operating position on their own 41.
- 1:22:14Only about a 36-yard punt for Guy.
- 1:22:17The Raiders trailing here 16-14 after taking the lead in the early third quarter.
- 1:22:24Schalk is in the backfield with Malone as Warfield splits left and to the right is the flanker, Nat Moore.
- 1:22:30Raiders go to piano, faking a blitz up the line of scrimmage.
- 1:22:33The handoff now goes to Moore, slamming across.
- 1:22:35He's cartwheeled down at the 46-yard line by Atkinson, by Malone if I said Moore.
- 1:22:40Excuse me.
- 1:22:41I knew it wasn't Moore.
- 1:22:42I knew I was watching.
- 1:22:43Just couldn't say it.
- 1:22:44Benny Malone.
- 1:22:46Number 32.
- 1:22:50They put the ball in the 45 rather than the 46 where he appeared to land.
- 1:22:53It's second down, however, and five and a half, call it six yards.
- 1:23:00Flang over the ball.
- 1:23:03Warfield splitting left.
- 1:23:04Moore out to the right.
- 1:23:11Handoff again to Malone and Malone is grabbed by the Raiders defender at the 47.
- 1:23:18Otis Sistranger was at North Irons.
- 1:23:21Irons jammed in from the right side.
- 1:23:23At first I thought it was Gerald, then I thought, well, he shouldn't have been there by all rights,
- 1:23:27but he made a way of a move to get there and stopped him on the 47.
- 1:23:30It's third and fourth.
- 1:23:33I've got the two-point lead, Bill, giving Zonko a little bit of a rest.
- 1:23:36They know they've got the fourth quarter to go, and from the looks of the scoreboard
- 1:23:39and the tempo of the game, that's going to be a barn burner.
- 1:23:41Very intelligent team.
- 1:23:42They'll let Malone carry a little bit and resting Zonko.
- 1:23:46Again, Warfield to the left.
- 1:23:47Out to the right is Moore, and they've got Mannich at a tight end on the left side.
- 1:23:51They go to him a lot in these situations.
- 1:23:53Chick is also in the backfield.
- 1:23:55Back is Greasey setting up V.
- 1:23:57But comes back.
- 1:23:58He has seized the football because Don't get there.
- 1:24:00Along with another Raider at the 37, Otis Sistranger.
- 1:24:04And you can credit the defensive coverage on that one.
- 1:24:07They had Chick and Mannich in, or both judge-receivers.
- 1:24:10The Raiders had everybody blanketed.
- 1:24:12Greasey had a lot of time, and he had to try to sidestep to look for somebody,
- 1:24:15and no longer could his men protect him.
- 1:24:18As Jones, from Greasey's own left, and Sistranger from the right, hemmed him in.
- 1:24:24Now Seifel into fun.
- 1:24:27Ron Smith back on the 22.
- 1:24:28He's a great return man in his own right.
- 1:24:30He'd like to break the big one here today.
- 1:24:34There's the snap.
- 1:24:36Ron Smith, Seifel, kicks one.
- 1:24:38Smith has to go to his last four.
- 1:24:40Picks it up immediately to 25, and goes down at the 29.
- 1:24:43Good coverage down there that time.
- 1:24:45Langer was down again, along with Mumford and Nottingham.
- 1:24:51Seifel doesn't kick him long, but he hangs it just enough so his coverage people can get down.
- 1:24:56And then Ron Smith's rhythm was broken.
- 1:24:58The ball popped out of his hand, bounded right in front of him, and he got it right back.
- 1:25:01So the Raiders get the football back with a quick containment of the dolphin offense.
- 1:25:05They try to get it rolling again.
- 1:25:07He had the rhythm in that drive early in the third quarter.
- 1:25:13Slotting right, branch inside, Balentnikov.
- 1:25:15Fred has caught five balls today.
- 1:25:18Sabler giving to Hubbard.
- 1:25:20Hubbard rumbles off left tackle and has dropped it about to 35.
- 1:25:24Matheson hit him down low, along with Cullen.
- 1:25:36But if that's his secondary, they have Henry Stuckey at right corner for Curtis Johnson on this series.
- 1:25:41He was in earlier as a fifth bat.
- 1:25:43Charlie Babb is in for Jake Scott, has been since the first quarter,
- 1:25:46and it's totally the left corner, and in Anderson, the strong safety.
- 1:25:50Hubbard made five and a half to six, second down.
- 1:25:52Stabber on a play-fake back to pass.
- 1:25:54Here comes the rush. He steps to the left.
- 1:25:55He got three. He got time, and he can't find anybody.
- 1:25:58He runs up on the left side, first down.
- 1:25:59Goes out of bounds on the 39.
- 1:26:01Good intelligent move that time, as Kenny kept looking all the time.
- 1:26:05But as it didn't develop, he edged more and more to the open edge of the field,
- 1:26:08where Stantl finally forced him out.
- 1:26:10And Eugene Upshaw, a great offensive guard and a guy who uses his head as well as his body.
- 1:26:16When he saw Kenny in trouble, he looked around for somebody to block,
- 1:26:18and he blocked the dolphin, which allowed Kenny to make that first down.
- 1:26:22Kenny's 11 for 20 today.
- 1:26:24Barely lost out to Kenny Anderson at Cincinnati in the AFC passing championship statistics for the year.
- 1:26:29Hubbard is out. Banizak is in with Davis in the backfield.
- 1:26:32There's the slot to the left.
- 1:26:33Branch inside.
- 1:26:34Bolivnikov outside.
- 1:26:35Hand off to Banizak, and he's hit at the line of scrimmage,
- 1:26:37and he may have gotten a yard and no more,
- 1:26:39and the play was made by Blount County, the middle linebacker.
- 1:26:42Nice across quickly.
- 1:26:45Nick in his 13th year out of Notre Dame, starting his career with a Patriots
- 1:26:49and then coming to Miami at the time of the Shula arrival.
- 1:26:5216-14 Miami. It would have been 17,
- 1:26:55but Mother Smith watched the conversion after the last dolphin touchdown.
- 1:27:01The easiest thrown a touchdown pass today, and Stabler is struck for a pair.
- 1:27:07Slot left. Stabler giving the day to send him wide to the left,
- 1:27:11and he's stacked up and thrown for a loss back at the 37-yard line.
- 1:27:15They rode over Moore and Banizak both as they tried to lead the blocking.
- 1:27:20Matheson made the tackle. The Miami defense is really stiffen here,
- 1:27:25and we'll pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:27:27This is the Oakland Raiders football network.
- 1:27:31Now it's 3rd and 12, and they go to the orange defense now.
- 1:27:36Stabler back, setting up. He's in trouble.
- 1:27:38Side steps, looks to the left. He's got an open field. He's going to run.
- 1:27:41He's at the 40. Comes back to the middle.
- 1:27:42Who is he? Crane at the 43.
- 1:27:44He was heading back to the middle to try to get up toward midfield
- 1:27:47when Matheson really blasted it.
- 1:27:50And Stabler not finding people open here, is having to run,
- 1:27:54but now it's 4th down and Guy will come in to punt.
- 1:27:58So he was robbed into a bit of a punting and defensive duel here.
- 1:28:02Now that Miami secondary has been very effective in closing off the Raider patterns.
- 1:28:13Moore is a deep man, shallow. You've got Dab and Anderson.
- 1:28:18Guy takes a snap. The boot is away. It's a low, hard-driven line drive,
- 1:28:22but could be returnable. Moore takes it on the 14.
- 1:28:24Gets to the left of the 20. Turns into his own man and falls out.
- 1:28:28He's dropped at the 19 yard line.
- 1:28:30And then a nodding hand was trying to block for him.
- 1:28:32That allowed Denary and Johnson and the Raiders to get down and get it.
- 1:28:4143-eyed punt by Guy.
- 1:28:44The Galpins take over now.
- 1:28:46They lead 16-14 with only 30 seconds of life, remaining to the third quarter.
- 1:28:54Minnesota blasted the Cardinals in the second half after the game was tied today.
- 1:28:59They broke out of that 7-7 tie and took an edge over St. Louis
- 1:29:03and then really forced them to do what they wanted to do in Minnesota in that NFC playoff.
- 1:29:07Jock and Malone in the backfield of the I-formation.
- 1:29:10Warfield comes left. Moore to the right.
- 1:29:15Rizzi gets to Sankis. Sends him lifting up in right guard across the 25 to the 30.
- 1:29:19He's got a push down. Tadum hitting. He kept rolling on.
- 1:29:22And finally was dropped by Irons at the 34, 33 and a half is what they're putting in.
- 1:29:29Jock got one of his best runs of the day.
- 1:29:34He got 15 on that one.
- 1:29:36And now Oakland having the problem, number one, of containment.
- 1:29:40Number two, moving the ball themselves.
- 1:29:42Larry Little, the great guard.
- 1:29:45Okay, Bill, there's the gun.
- 1:29:47There's the gun sounding the end of the third quarter.
- 1:29:49The scoreboard shows Miami 16, Oakland 14.
- 1:29:52It's the fourth quarter.
- 1:29:53Miami moving from our left to our right as we view the action here.
- 1:29:58The Dolphins are first and 10.
- 1:30:0034-yard line in their own territory.
- 1:30:02The Raiders need that big defensive play.
- 1:30:06Warfield to the left. To the right is Moore.
- 1:30:08Quick pitch to the right side of Malone.
- 1:30:10Turning the corner. He's got running room at the 35.
- 1:30:12Hammer it at the 40 and goes down fine to the 41-yard line.
- 1:30:15Coming up to make the play was Monty Johnson.
- 1:30:19Fleming and Little were out in front leading the block and pulling out.
- 1:30:23And the Dolphins are making big first down yardage again.
- 1:30:27They did it in the first quarter.
- 1:30:29The Raiders shut that down in the second and early third quarters.
- 1:30:33Oakland in the orange defense with a rushing group up front.
- 1:30:37A Cisdrunk and Tom's and Harsh Jones.
- 1:30:39Tony Klein has not played today.
- 1:30:43Now they line up Warfield in tight.
- 1:30:45They send Malone out to the left.
- 1:30:47Moore to the right. Both close flanks on second and two.
- 1:30:50This is a quarterback's dream situation.
- 1:30:52But he gets the zonkha, gets the first down with a bull-like rush up the middle of the 46-yard line.
- 1:31:00Jones made the stop.
- 1:31:03And so Miami moving the football, controlling the clock, leading by two.
- 1:31:08Right now they're doing the thing that they most like to do.
- 1:31:12This is their game. They're not really a team that likes to pass.
- 1:31:15They can get out in front and just give it to their great backs and let that offensive line open holes.
- 1:31:19They're happy to do that.
- 1:31:21They put the ball on the 45 for that first down.
- 1:31:24Now Warfield goes left.
- 1:31:26To the right is Moore. The Raider corner is head-and-head with those two wide receivers.
- 1:31:31Greasy dropping back defense.
- 1:31:32Looks, fires quickly up the left side. Moore makes the catch and gets...
- 1:31:35Check it. Warfield makes the catch and gets out of bounds on the 36.
- 1:31:39The Raiders had a rotating zone that time and he went right into the area after he left Wilson, or Wilson left him, and before Atkinson rotated to him.
- 1:31:48And he made the catch and got out of bounds on the 40...
- 1:31:52Make it the 36. 36-yard line.
- 1:32:02Scottie had mentioned the Dolphins don't like to throw, except on their terms, and they felt it was the right time.
- 1:32:07It's only the ninth pass today by Greasy. He's completed five. It's first and tenth.
- 1:32:12He keeps Warfield in sight on the left side again.
- 1:32:17A pitch goes to Malone, circling the right side. Gets a block from Little.
- 1:32:21Now he cuts upfield to the 32-yard line where he's knocked down on the play by Sistrunk.
- 1:32:27Little and Fleming out in front again. Both excellent blockers in those situations.
- 1:32:32And the Dolphins get almost five. It'll be second down and five and a half.
- 1:32:37Bubba coming in for the Raiders now, and Johnson comes out. Raiders have four records.
- 1:32:45Oakland has lost only once in six playoff games in their own...
- 1:32:49Malowek here, and that was that Kansas City loss when LaMonica had the injured hand.
- 1:32:53Slot left.
- 1:32:55Greasy brings more in motion from left to right. Thomas follows him across.
- 1:33:00A handoff to Saka, and he rumbles over left side of the 28-yard line.
- 1:33:05Irons making the stop for the Raiders, along with Horace Jones.
- 1:33:10Kuchenberg, the left yard, with the blocking key that time.
- 1:33:14It'll be third down on the 33. Third and three.
- 1:33:19It's important to the Raiders, Scottie, that they curtail this drive.
- 1:33:23To no more than three points for the Dolphins.
- 1:33:26They get an eight-point lead, and they've got themselves a good situation.
- 1:33:32Warfield at the last. More to the right.
- 1:33:37Banger over the ball.
- 1:33:42Long count by Greasy.
- 1:33:44Now he takes it, drops straight back. He looks. He curls. Warfield has dropped the ball on the 29th line.
- 1:33:50He had some help. He had some help from Neymar Wilson that time, who hit him hard at the moment of contact on that short out pattern.
- 1:34:00Scottie points out that Warfield appeared to take his eye off the ball for whatever reason.
- 1:34:04And now, with a ball on the 28th yard line, they're going to attempt a field goal from the 36.
- 1:34:11This is a 46-yard attempt. The Apprenium has not made one this long this year.
- 1:34:16More will spot.
- 1:34:22It's spot. It's kicked on the way. It is good.
- 1:34:26Carol, your premium. His longest field goal of the year. 46 yards.
- 1:34:31And time is out on the field with 11.50 to go in the ballgame.
- 1:34:35Scoreboard showing. Miami, 19. Oakland, 14.
- 1:34:39Now the Raiders. And now the Raiders need either a touchdown or a fair field goal to take the lead from Miami, even if Miami doesn't score.
- 1:34:47And he gets one high, but not deep. Hart waits under it at the 10.
- 1:34:50Jumps out to the 15. To the 20, the 25.
- 1:34:53Apprimes the lane, breaks the tackle at the 30. Drives up to the 38-yard line.
- 1:34:57Nottingham is there.
- 1:34:59Along with Larry Ball and Ed Newman to make the stops.
- 1:35:04Hart with a good return.
- 1:35:06The Raiders ready to operate, but in their last two possessions, they have not been able to get it going.
- 1:35:10After the one drive in the early third quarter that took them to the touchdown and the lead.
- 1:35:17More and more, that pass interference penalty against Villa Piano looms as, and this is an overused phrase, but the pivotal or turning point in this football game.
- 1:35:27Olenikov wide to the right. Davis comes in motion to the left. Hubbard veers off from one tackler, runs into three more, and gets only a yard to the 39.
- 1:35:35Penetrating was Matheson from the linebacking spot, making Hubbard adjust his intended direction, and Stanfield made the stop.
- 1:35:44Second and nine. So now the Raiders, unlike the Dolphins, not making yardage on first down.
- 1:35:51Meaning the heat is on them on second and third.
- 1:35:55Branch to the left. Olenikov to the right. That way it's tough to keep defenders off balance.
- 1:36:00Saber got straight back, sets up and throws, and he's got it incomplete.
- 1:36:05I thought he had the completion as Olenikov was stripped of the ball at the moment of reception by Mumford just across the 50.
- 1:36:12By, uh, Bowling at Mumford. Just across the 50 yard line.
- 1:36:19There it is, Scotty. In the third quarter, first down plays, or not just in the third quarter, but for the game.
- 1:36:25Miami 17 first downs, 111 yard, average 6.5.
- 1:36:30Oakland 19 first down, 75 yard, average 3.1.
- 1:36:34Branch to the left, Olenikov to the right. Third and long, almost 10. Saber back.
- 1:36:39Shuts up a screen to Davis. Davis 35-40. Hesitates runs in to Anderson who stops him.
- 1:36:43Anderson stops him at the 47, two yards short of the first down.
- 1:36:49And so Ray Guy comes on with a punting team.
- 1:36:53Davis couldn't get quite enough room to make the burst.
- 1:36:59A grim, tough struggle made all the more difficult for the Raiders today.
- 1:37:03When 15 seconds after the game started, they were looking at a 7-0 deficit.
- 1:37:08Dick Anderson drops back deep, along with Nat Moore.
- 1:37:15And bad is deep. Guy takes a snap, locks the punt high and deep.
- 1:37:19Moore waiting for it. He let it bounce at the 11. Raiders trying to cover it at the 5.
- 1:37:24It is down by a Raider on the right at about the one yard line.
- 1:37:27And then it squirts away and into the end zone. Harold Hart was down after it.
- 1:37:33It bounded on into the end zone out of his grasp as the Raiders and Dolphins swarmed around it.
- 1:37:38It's role to be on the one yard line. A hustling effort.
- 1:37:41The ball took a goalward bounce, and the Raiders' heart got there before the Dolphins could block him off and let it go into the end zone.
- 1:37:48Timeout on the field. 10-11 left to go. Scoreboard showing Miami 19, Oakland 14.
- 1:38:04We've got a raging argument between John Madden and the officials.
- 1:38:07The officials, after we cut away, indicated they had ruled that somehow Oakland downed that ball in the end zone.
- 1:38:14And they're ruling that Hart, after he juggled it, picked it up and established possession in the end zone,
- 1:38:20rather than on the one yard line, which had originally been marked by the referee,
- 1:38:24it's ruled a touchback at the 20. Madden has been debating, arguably, on the sideline with Ben Hopkins, but to no avail.
- 1:38:35And now the Dolphins operate from the 20.
- 1:38:38And it appears on the replay that the call is correct if, indeed, Hart had possession.
- 1:38:44Now that's the question. How much possession did he have? He had his hands on it.
- 1:38:49Now the Dolphins go to Howard Twilley, the veteran move man, in place of Moore and one wide receiver.
- 1:38:53Very sure-handed. Warfield at the other. Zonka off left tackle to the 25, knocked down by Irons at the 26.
- 1:39:00And there's a six-yard gain on first down again. That's the name of the game for the Dolphins.
- 1:39:06Oakland's in big trouble now, Bill, because the Dolphins in the last two series have been able to do what they do best, as you pointed out,
- 1:39:13and that's maintain ball control. Oakland down by five points, under 10 minutes to go now in a ball game.
- 1:39:19And the Dolphins looking very, very strong at this juncture.
- 1:39:24Warfield to the left, in the slide is Twilley again.
- 1:39:30Second and four. Twilley comes back in motion to the right.
- 1:39:35Give the ball here to Malone, follows Zonka through, and he gets to the 28th.
- 1:39:39Over the right guard position.
- 1:39:42Filipino made the stop. It'll be third and two from all appearances, maybe a little less, depending on where they mark the football.
- 1:39:49Twilley is one of the two original Dolphins. Zonka today has averaged 4.6 yards per carry, Malone 4.8. Warfield goes out.
- 1:39:59Maniches in. So we'll have double tight ends, third and two.
- 1:40:12Twilley about a yard off the right side, climbing it right in, Maniches left. Hand off to Zonka. Zonka first down to the 31-yard line.
- 1:40:21He was filled by Jones, but kept bowing ahead and moving out with Kuchenberg to lead the way.
- 1:40:27And so the Dolphins keep going it, and the time shows 8.30.
- 1:40:32And overhead some blue sky, some clouds, all the fog area has dissipated.
- 1:40:39The later skies aren't particularly bright as they trail by five.
- 1:40:43Mercury Morris watches from the bench where he's been all day and a lot of the year.
- 1:40:48But Benny Malone has done well in his stead. Now slot right with Warfield back in, backs in the I-formation.
- 1:40:54They send Warfield in motion back to the left, followed across by Wilson.
- 1:40:58Hand off to Zonka, busting the middle to the 34-yard line. Tom submarines the play.
- 1:41:04Norm Evans, the right tackle, was the blocking lead on that.
- 1:41:09Second down and about eight. He made only a pair.
- 1:41:15The line of scrimmage is at 31.5. They mark it at 34. About seven and a half to go.
- 1:41:21One of the marks of the Dolphin team is there are a few mistakes, Bill.
- 1:41:25Othman needs a breakdown, interception, or a fumble, but the Dolphins just don't seem to make those kind of mistakes in big games.
- 1:41:317.30 to go.
- 1:41:37Long count by Greasy. That uses time too. Back into the pocket he goes.
- 1:41:41Gets up, looks to Warfield, throws. He's got a completion at the 45.
- 1:41:45First down, he's knocked out of bounds by Wilson. Warfield breaking the pattern off in front of Nehmeyer.
- 1:41:50You've got to protect against his threat to go deep.
- 1:41:54He'll drive you off that line a little bit and then make his break to the side.
- 1:41:58Greasy now, six for 11 on the day. Warfield, three of the six reception.
- 1:42:04Nottingham plot one, kick one, and Moore one.
- 1:42:10Nat Moore, though, sets the tempo and the tone for the day.
- 1:42:13Put the Raiders behind at the start with a kickoff return of 89 yards to open the game.
- 1:42:20Warfield on the left and Fleming to the right. Here's the handoff to Zonka.
- 1:42:23Didn't get a good start, but he kind of climbed the mountain of players.
- 1:42:25It might have clawed out a couple of yards over the middle. Tom stacked up the blocking down low.
- 1:42:317.05 in county. Miami leads 19-14.
- 1:42:36On the postgame show immediately after the game, man, Scotty Sterling will have his
- 1:42:41survey and summary of this game. A rehash of the St. Louis loss to Minnesota today.
- 1:42:46A look ahead at the playoffs. We'll be in the Raider locker room after his show
- 1:42:49with our locker room show and guests.
- 1:42:54Warfield on the left, Fleming to the right. Kick is in now, second and eight.
- 1:42:59Raiders have been holding better on first downs than the last two first down opportunities.
- 1:43:05Handoff to Zonka, and Zonka on a misdirection is knocked out. Berba made the play.
- 1:43:11He made almost nothing. It'll be third and eight, and it comes in.
- 1:43:14They go to him a lot in critical situations.
- 1:43:17That was one of those same Miami misdirection plays, but the Raiders were waiting for it.
- 1:43:21Malone is in for kicks. You've got Malone and Zonka in that backfield.
- 1:43:26This is the kind of a defensive stop now that the Raiders have to have here to force that punt,
- 1:43:30get their hands on the football. They haven't done much with the ball since the early third quarter
- 1:43:34when they drove 60 yards and scored to take the lead briefly.
- 1:43:43Now with Warfield on the left and Fleming to the right, the Raiders are in the orange defense here.
- 1:43:47Third and eight.
- 1:43:51The Raiders give the ball to Malone. Power sweep to the right.
- 1:43:53He's got Zonka a little in front. It's a 50-brick to Cockney.
- 1:43:55Swept out from behind. Short of the first down on the 47-yard line by a pursuing Otis Sistrup.
- 1:44:02So the Dolphins forced a punt as Seipel comes into the ballgame.
- 1:44:08And now the clock shows 5-20 to go. Miami out in front by five.
- 1:44:14The Raiders must make use of their next possession here.
- 1:44:19And Tree will not do it today.
- 1:44:23They've got to have the big six or a pair of three. Ron Smith back deep on the 10.
- 1:44:27Harden Hudson up at the 30.
- 1:44:31Seipel takes the snap, drives into the punt, hangs one up away from Smith,
- 1:44:35doing a good job of kicking away from Ron, and it sails out of bounds.
- 1:44:40The official marks it on the 15-yard line, which would be a boot of 32 yards.
- 1:44:45But preventing the return, that's twice he's kicked away from Smith, effectively.
- 1:44:51Time out on the field. We have 4.54 to go.
- 1:44:54Scoreboard showing Miami 19, Oakland 14.
- 1:45:11Now the Raiders with a ball marked at the 16, not the 15.
- 1:45:16Ready to go to work.
- 1:45:18First and 10.
- 1:45:21Branch to the left, Paletnik off to the right.
- 1:45:24Dolphins in the orange defense, Taber back, setting up to pass, looks and throws,
- 1:45:28quick Paletnik off and he goes out of bounds on the 29.
- 1:45:32Thumb catch by Fred, right between defenders Matheson and Foley.
- 1:45:37Double coverage over there and he got out of bounds with the ball.
- 1:45:41That's his sixth reception of the day. They mark it at the 28.
- 1:45:44First and 10 open.
- 1:45:47Well, when Cincinnati got wiped out a few weeks ago by Miami, Ron Pritchard,
- 1:45:51the Cincinnati linebacker, says Miami is an execution machine.
- 1:45:55The Dolphins have been that more and more as the game has worn on since the mid-third quarter.
- 1:45:59Stabler first and 10 back again.
- 1:46:01Going deep to Branch, up the left side, head-in-head battle, and he makes a diving pass at the 30.
- 1:46:06He gets up, nobody's testing. He's at the 20, he's at the 10.
- 1:46:10Let's go, Raiders!
- 1:46:25The open coliseum is coming apart here, but Branch made a diving pass being covered on the play by Stuckey.
- 1:46:34Stuckey was deep behind it. Branch came back, dived, got up because nobody had touched him.
- 1:46:39He's printed 20 more yards to score. 72 yards.
- 1:46:44Oakland is leading 20 to 19. They're now blending in, trying to make it a 2.0.
- 1:46:51Stabler will hold, low snap, spot, kick, good!
- 1:46:57And so, the Oakland Raiders, a team that has always had a time bomb hidden in a chip pocket,
- 1:47:05ready to lay on somebody. That time bomb exploded that time on the most incredible catch of the year
- 1:47:12by Cliff Branch of the Raiders.
- 1:47:15This third-year Oakland Raider, world-class sprinter, 9-3 in the 100, 60 catches this year, 13 touchdowns.
- 1:47:23Just made probably the most important catch of his football life.
- 1:47:29Four minutes and 37 seconds remaining. And the Miami Dolphins, a seasoned team, they've been through it all.
- 1:47:37They are still not a dead football team, let me remind you of that.
- 1:47:54Now, Jaco Beco ready to kick off. For the record, the Raiders have operated 52 plays to 43 for Miami.
- 1:48:02First downs are even now at 14 each.
- 1:48:06Morris back there along with Ginn, and the kickoff is away to the sideline.
- 1:48:10Ginn takes it, and learning to go out of bounds at the 10, up at the 20, 25,
- 1:48:14goes ahead to the 32-yard line.
- 1:48:16And now comes arch-stopping football. Four minutes and 28 seconds to go.
- 1:48:21The Dolphins, a well-oiled offensive machine, now can't be content just to hang on to the football.
- 1:48:30But Scotty, what's important, and Don Schuller knows it, three points can win this football game.
- 1:48:35That's right. The Raiders have to keep them outside of that field goal range.
- 1:48:38Your premiering was good today from 46, which was his longest kick of the year.
- 1:48:43Now, you've got to keep that in mind. That is the key thing.
- 1:48:45They've got to play the 50-yard line like the goal line. They simply must do that.
- 1:48:52Here's Langer over the ball. Brazy at the quarterback.
- 1:48:54Don Kamelow to the running back. Warfield to the left.
- 1:48:57Nath Moore to the right.
- 1:49:00Raiders have their four-man front with Bubba in the ballgame.
- 1:49:05Brazy back. He's going to throw if he can.
- 1:49:07He rolls back to the left away from the pressure as time throws up and completes the board.
- 1:49:11The 45 of the Raiders, put down by Wilson, along with Philip Piano.
- 1:49:16Oh, he put that ball in there right in the slot.
- 1:49:21So quickly, the Dolphins, with still over four minutes left in the game, are getting into striking position.
- 1:49:28They're already in a situation now where they can nibble away to get to the field goal range,
- 1:49:33but always keep an eye on the possibility of a touchdown.
- 1:49:37And of course, they know too that a touchdown in conversion would put it out of range of the Raiders,
- 1:49:42except by a touchdown for Oakland.
- 1:49:45Twillius to the right this time in the game.
- 1:49:47Hennob to Zonka.
- 1:49:48Booth to two-man and is caught at the 40-yard line, but his momentum,
- 1:49:52even though his feet were held by Philip Piano at the 40, carries him to about the 38.
- 1:49:58John Madden, pacing nervously on the sideline as the Raiders have been on a roller coaster of emotion today.
- 1:50:06Zonka has 97 yards on 23, very persistent carries of the football.
- 1:50:11The ball is on the 38 and a half of Oakland, and again the Dolphins making big first down yardage.
- 1:50:16Second down and four. Warfield to the left against Wilson.
- 1:50:20Twillie to the right against Chip Thomas.
- 1:50:26Grazie under center.
- 1:50:27Here's the ball to Zonka. Zonka drives to 35, going to the 30, running over people, knocked down at the 23-yard line.
- 1:50:35Po Warfield was out in front blocking for him.
- 1:50:39And now the Dolphins are in field goal range, but they're not even worried about that right now.
- 1:50:44They know they can get a touchdown if they can find the right combination here
- 1:50:48and always keep the field goal in the hip pocket as insurance.
- 1:50:52Two-thirty-five to go.
- 1:50:57Also needs a big defensive play here, Bill.
- 1:50:59They need some kind of a hit that might force a fumble because it looks like the Dolphins are just too strong running on the ground.
- 1:51:04The Dolphins haven't turned the ball over today. Warfield to the left.
- 1:51:08Twillie to the right.
- 1:51:09Reezy used the pass judiciously to start this drive. He gets him alone.
- 1:51:12Send him to the right. He's turning the corner behind a little at the 20.
- 1:51:15Down to the 50. He rams one man out of the way at the 10.
- 1:51:18He goes all the way. Touchdown Dolphins.
- 1:51:25Tony Malone with a startling run of 23 yards.
- 1:51:29And Miami is back in front 25-21.
- 1:51:32He just pulled, rammed, smashed Dick Thomas out of the play as he went to tackle him.
- 1:51:38Larry Little is in front to clear the way from other would-be tacklers.
- 1:51:42It was Thomas who appeared to have him stop and he just banged him off.
- 1:51:47Jumped under another tackler and went into the end zone to spike the football.
- 1:51:51Here's Eupremium with a conversion.
- 1:51:532-0-8 to go right now as Eupremium waits.
- 1:51:56Morrill will hold. Snap, spot, kick is up. It is good.
- 1:52:01And so the Dolphins are back in front.
- 1:52:04And it took them 2 minutes and 29 seconds to do it.
- 1:52:10I have only one adjective to describe that sequence. Awesome. Absolutely awesome.
- 1:52:18Now with 2 minutes and 8 seconds remaining to play.
- 1:52:22The Raiders are behind the 8 ball.
- 1:52:25It's they who must operate with their 2-minute offense.
- 1:52:28As John Madden ponders this from the Oakland sideline.
- 1:52:35Stabler has thrown 3 touchdown passes today.
- 1:52:38One to Baletnikov, one to Smith, one to Branch.
- 1:52:41And still the Raiders are trailing here, 26-21.
- 1:52:51The Dolphins went 68 yards in 4 plays.
- 1:52:55Here's Eupremium with a kickoff.
- 1:52:57He gets into it as Ron Smith takes it on the Euprem 12.
- 1:53:00Up to the 20, 25, left sideline.
- 1:53:02And at the 32 is driven out of bounds by Miami tackler Ed Newman along with Jairus White.
- 1:53:08And now the Raiders are 68 yards from the promised land and 2 minutes and 1 second remaining to do it.
- 1:53:16The possibility of a tie as far as the numbers are concerned right now is quite remote.
- 1:53:23It's all or nothing at all.
- 1:53:27Miami has Stuckey at that right corner where he's been for Curtis Johnson.
- 1:53:31The whole second half.
- 1:53:32Foley the left corner.
- 1:53:33Dabb and Anderson the safety.
- 1:53:36Stabler on first down.
- 1:53:37Here comes a blitz by Ball but it's picked up.
- 1:53:39He throws complete to Moore.
- 1:53:40Ooh, if he's decked.
- 1:53:42Dick Anderson hit him a shot.
- 1:53:43Moore gets right up at the 38 yard line.
- 1:53:47He was really blasted.
- 1:53:48The 2-minute warning has gone to both benches.
- 1:53:50Timeout on the field.
- 1:53:511.56 left to go.
- 1:53:53Scoreboard showing Miami 26.
- 1:53:55Oakland 21.
- 1:54:01Now resuming the action, the Raiders have a second down and 4.
- 1:54:04The ball on Oakland's 38 yard line.
- 1:54:07They're now 62 yards from the promised land.
- 1:54:101.56 to go.
- 1:54:12They trail.
- 1:54:1346-21.
- 1:54:14Davis is stopped at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:54:21Warnock County tried to come that time.
- 1:54:23It's picked up.
- 1:54:24But those two front foremen made the stop on Davis.
- 1:54:26And the Raiders are now faced with third and three.
- 1:54:28And they're lining up without a hurdle here with time and a premium.
- 1:54:31And there's a critical play.
- 1:54:34Slot right.
- 1:54:35Sabler going back to pass.
- 1:54:37He's looking.
- 1:54:38He throws.
- 1:54:39Well at the top open at the 50.
- 1:54:40Makes the catch.
- 1:54:41Down to the 43.
- 1:54:42He blocks.
- 1:54:43The Dolphins dropping off in a prevent style of defense.
- 1:54:46Balentnikov found the opening.
- 1:54:50Warnock County wanted attackers along with Dick Anderson.
- 1:54:53And for Balentnikov, that's reception number seven of the day.
- 1:54:56Time has been called.
- 1:54:58The Raiders have used one of their three timeouts.
- 1:55:01Two left.
- 1:55:02They're now 43 yards from the promised land.
- 1:55:15Frank Fitz is coming onto the field now.
- 1:55:18And he'll replace Davis.
- 1:55:21So Scotty, we're getting a little bit tactical play by the Raiders here.
- 1:55:25Fitz a wide receiver, a vast experience.
- 1:55:27Good speed, particularly on fairly straight patterns.
- 1:55:30Replacing Davis.
- 1:55:31So this will give the Dolphins a little more to think about in the area of coverage.
- 1:55:35Raiders have been getting excellent pass protection for Kenny.
- 1:55:38And of course they can go with just one back there to pass protect the full back and go with that third receiver.
- 1:55:44You've got to put some heat on that on that secondary.
- 1:55:47You've got to find a spot in that zone.
- 1:55:49Now Kenny's great strength, I think, as a quarterback is his ability to look at that zone and see where that open spot is going to be.
- 1:55:56And he knows the patterns of courses who might be in there.
- 1:55:58And Fitz is a big, big guy.
- 1:56:00I like a color receiver in that zone.
- 1:56:02The Dolphins defense is the orange.
- 1:56:06They have Larry Ball in with a front three of Ben Herter, Fernandez, and Santo.
- 1:56:10Branch to the left, Belinda top to the right.
- 1:56:12The corner's way off the line.
- 1:56:14It's going to be 12, 14 yards in the secondary.
- 1:56:16Sabre back.
- 1:56:17He looks, steps up in the pocket.
- 1:56:18Trouts the grid.
- 1:56:19Takes a great pass at the 25.
- 1:56:21What a pattern.
- 1:56:22He's knocked down by Bab.
- 1:56:24At the 23.
- 1:56:25The clock running.
- 1:56:261-11 to go.
- 1:56:2723 yards from the promise line, primary 26.
- 1:56:30Oakland, 21.
- 1:56:32Branch to the left, Belinda top to the right, lining up without a huddle.
- 1:56:35Sabre not hurrying at all.
- 1:56:37He has Fitz down to the left.
- 1:56:40Branch is to the right in the slot inside Fred.
- 1:56:42And a quick throw out of Branch.
- 1:56:44Makes the check.
- 1:56:45That's not a bomb, but the 20.
- 1:56:46That was a first down play.
- 1:56:48They make four to the 19 and a half.
- 1:56:51Starts the clock at 52 seconds.
- 1:56:54Sabre operating now expertly.
- 1:56:59And comes back to the huddle.
- 1:57:02Kenny not coming to the sideline during this.
- 1:57:05Of course it isn't a full timeout.
- 1:57:07The clock is stopped.
- 1:57:08So he's not even looking to the sideline.
- 1:57:10Here's Hubbard in for batters.
- 1:57:11Sabre is 18 for 28, 279 yards.
- 1:57:15The last six games in which he's played the full game, he's passed for more than 200 yards.
- 1:57:23Delfin's killing the O'Ring.
- 1:57:25Raiders 19 and a half yards from the promised land.
- 1:57:28Bits to the left.
- 1:57:29Branch and Baletnikov to the right.
- 1:57:31Back to pass.
- 1:57:32Sabre goes to pitch.
- 1:57:33He makes the juggling pass at the 14th.
- 1:57:35Is it the first down or close?
- 1:57:37Let's see what they rule.
- 1:57:38The clock is moving at 41 seconds.
- 1:57:41The official's eyeballing.
- 1:57:42And now they stop the clock because the Raiders have called the timeout.
- 1:57:46They don't have the first down.
- 1:57:48They're about a foot short I think.
- 1:57:50And that'll make it third and one.
- 1:57:52Or third and a half or third and a fourth, however you want to term it.
- 1:57:56Kich made a great recovery.
- 1:57:58The ball hit him and the hands popped up in the air and he got it back before he was smashed.
- 1:58:02This football game has been all anyone can say it could be.
- 1:58:07Between two great, evenly matched teams.
- 1:58:10Whoever loses here today can feel very, very badly indeed because whoever loses today could just as easily be going all the way.
- 1:58:19Bill, this game has been one of sway and flow.
- 1:58:22Although on the whole you would have to think that the Dolphins with that great ground game have dominated.
- 1:58:27But there was that third quarter when the Raiders went into the lead.
- 1:58:30When they moved down the field with Voletnikov making those super catches and Kenny just picking that zone apart.
- 1:58:35And then it was the Dolphins coming back with that tremendous four play drive.
- 1:58:39He's been up two minutes after the Raiders had gone ahead on branches straight, catch and run.
- 1:58:43It's just been that kind of a football game.
- 1:58:45In truth it's been what everybody said it would be.
- 1:58:47The mini Super Bowl, whether it gets any better than this, I don't know what it will be.
- 1:58:5154,020 are here and I don't think anybody's left today.
- 1:58:54The ball on the 13 and a half yard line.
- 1:58:56It is third and about a foot.
- 1:58:58Now Frank Pinch has come out.
- 1:59:00Stabler asks for quiet.
- 1:59:01He's got to get the first down.
- 1:59:02That's of primary importance.
- 1:59:03Hubbard is in.
- 1:59:04They give the Davis.
- 1:59:05Davis drives to the eight yard line.
- 1:59:07Turning off the left side.
- 1:59:08And the Raiders extend their last time out.
- 1:59:11They are on the eight yard line.
- 1:59:13It's first and goal to go.
- 1:59:14And now 35 seconds are left.
- 1:59:19Harris Davis starting off the ball and following a fire out of Watkins from the left side of the interior line.
- 1:59:27Davis and Hubbard are still in the backfield.
- 1:59:31Stabler is talking to Madden at the sideline now.
- 1:59:37These are pivotal words and opinions being exchanged here.
- 1:59:40The crowd teaching itself for it hopes and exposure.
- 1:59:43But the Miami Dolphins, great prize, looking to be the first team ever to play in four straight Super Bowls and win three straight.
- 1:59:50They are a team that has been through it all.
- 1:59:52And they know that they could come up with one big play.
- 1:59:55And the Black Sox and Black Hankees are out now.
- 1:59:57Bill, this crowd, like you said, not one soul has left.
- 2:00:00And they are letting those Raiders know just how they feel.
- 2:00:03This is really, I don't believe I've seen one as tense and as tight.
- 2:00:07And to use your word as tingly in this park and its nine year history.
- 2:00:11Thirty five seconds left.
- 2:00:13First and goal for Oakland.
- 2:00:14They trail twenty six twenty one.
- 2:00:17The promised land is eight yards away.
- 2:00:20Blanch to the left against Ducky.
- 2:00:22Well, let me talk to the right against Coley.
- 2:00:25That's a pass.
- 2:00:26Go Stabler.
- 2:00:27Look it. Look it. Look it.
- 2:00:28He runs.
- 2:00:29He's at the fifteen. He throws.
- 2:00:31Hit it.
- 2:00:32Hey, cut down Raiders.
- 2:00:33Cut down Raiders.
- 2:00:35I can't even see the receiver.
- 2:00:37Clarence Davis.
- 2:00:39It looks like Clarence Davis.
- 2:00:41He's being mobbed.
- 2:00:45Stabler was hit as he fell.
- 2:00:47He was falling down.
- 2:00:49Stabler threw the ball in the roof.
- 2:00:52I still can't tell if it's Davis.
- 2:00:55I thought it was.
- 2:00:58It is a touchdown.
- 2:01:03Everybody in the booth, yes here it is, Davis got it.
- 2:01:06Everybody in the booth believed it was Davis.
- 2:01:09But he went down in a heap of tacklers and then was mobbed by fans.
- 2:01:14The Raiders had taken the lead twenty seven, forty six.
- 2:01:17When Stabler had to loop the ball up because he was hit as he threw,
- 2:01:21it looked like he might have been lobbing it into the promised land for Miami.
- 2:01:26But no, Mike Collin couldn't get there.
- 2:01:29Davis got there first and it was the Raiders' promised land.
- 2:01:32Funda kick, the conversion is good.
- 2:01:37But now there are twenty six seconds left and you and I know what twenty six,
- 2:01:42twenty six seconds means in a National Football League playoff game.
- 2:01:53I got in there with an instant when that ball was in mid-flight and I thought,
- 2:01:56Stabler wishes he had that one done.
- 2:01:58Bill, I'll tell you why I wish he was going to think he had it back because
- 2:02:02Fred Beletnikov had run a beautiful pattern into the right corner of the end zone
- 2:02:06and for a good two seconds he was open.
- 2:02:08Kenny did not see him.
- 2:02:09Fred was there waving his arms and I thought, my goodness, he doesn't see him.
- 2:02:13He went to Davis, an incredible catch.
- 2:02:16Now the Dolphins ready for the kickoff here.
- 2:02:19Dr. Venko will probably try to bounce it.
- 2:02:22The Dolphins break up their wedge so they have only two men in the normal wedge position
- 2:02:26and two up in the middle of the field where they might be able to pick it up.
- 2:02:30They're also looking for the possibility of the onside kick.
- 2:02:32They bring four men up across the 50 out of the fort,
- 2:02:35nearly to the 45 yard line of the Raiders.
- 2:02:38Dr. Venko ready to move from our right to our left.
- 2:02:40Twenty-six seconds left to play.
- 2:02:42Here is the kick.
- 2:02:43He lines one hard.
- 2:02:44It bounds at the 15.
- 2:02:46It hits more at the 10.
- 2:02:47He puts it up to the 20.
- 2:02:49Twenty-five curves into the 30.
- 2:02:51He goes down at the 32.
- 2:02:53Twenty-one seconds left.
- 2:02:55And the clock is stopped.
- 2:02:56And Gracie and the attacking unit come onto the field.
- 2:02:59And the great dynasty of the Miami Dolphins hangs by the swim fan of 21 seconds.
- 2:03:07The fans pick up the defense champ.
- 2:03:10The fans have taken down this huge replica of a bone fish
- 2:03:14and are wandering around the stands waving it down the radar defense.
- 2:03:18What will it be here?
- 2:03:20The Orange defense, Monty Johnson.
- 2:03:23And three rushers.
- 2:03:25The Dolphins have Matt Moore and Warfield.
- 2:03:28Warfield with the left.
- 2:03:29Matt Moore to the right.
- 2:03:35Now Malone in the backfield.
- 2:03:37Gracie asks for a new football.
- 2:03:39Or Jim Langer does.
- 2:03:40Malone and Dr. the running backs.
- 2:03:44The three-man rush of the Raiders is going to have to be very conscious
- 2:03:47of Bob Gracie and his ability to run with the football.
- 2:03:51Now they're ready.
- 2:03:52They are 67 yards away from a touchdown.
- 2:03:56They need three to win a kill.
- 2:03:57That's important, but there's only 21 seconds.
- 2:03:59Gracie retreats to the left.
- 2:04:00He goes way up the middle.
- 2:04:02Interceptor to the piano.
- 2:04:03Time running down.
- 2:04:0513 seconds to play.
- 2:04:07Oakland football.
- 2:04:09And I think Oakland victory.
- 2:04:11It's 13 seconds away from confirmation.
- 2:04:17The crowd going wild here at the Coliseum.
- 2:04:20Madden and his delirium of joy.
- 2:04:23Goes about 20 yards out onto the field to welcome the defenders and
- 2:04:27Gullitiano.
- 2:04:28Gullitiano gets maddened with football.
- 2:04:30He displays it for all to see.
- 2:04:38The ball on the 50-yard line.
- 2:04:39It's Oakland football.
- 2:04:40Time is out.
- 2:04:41All they'll do is fall on it.
- 2:04:45Everyone here on his feet.
- 2:04:47Everyone here waving some sort of black paddler.
- 2:04:50It may be a cap.
- 2:04:51It may be a sock.
- 2:04:52It may be a jacket.
- 2:04:53It might be a job.
- 2:04:59So I know a Catholic priest who's in section 2-10.
- 2:05:02He's a great big heavy guy.
- 2:05:03Father Riley from Plain Monacos in Maraca.
- 2:05:06And he's got a big black jacket that he brought here.
- 2:05:08He's a corpulent guy.
- 2:05:09And I'm telling you, he's using up a lot of his air with that black jacket.
- 2:05:1313 seconds left to go.
- 2:05:15I don't know who my guest will be in the locker room.
- 2:05:17It'll be Pandemonium.
- 2:05:19We'll be with you next week from all appearances on KNDR Only.
- 2:05:24We'll be bidding goodbye to our network folks today.
- 2:05:27Hubbard rumbles down to the 45.
- 2:05:29The clock is moving.
- 2:05:30Devon Sucking, the Dolphins, stopping with a timeout.
- 2:05:33And like two professionals, they will take every opportunity to get whatever opportunity
- 2:05:38might exist to keep the final decision from being registered.
- 2:05:45Our KNDR flagship station, all of the network stations, all of our sponsors,
- 2:05:49all of our crew here in the booth, wish you and yours the various sacrifices.
- 2:05:54And next Sunday, a week from tomorrow, when the Raiders meet Pittsburgh or Buffalo here,
- 2:05:59we'll be with you at 1240 Pacific Standard Time on KNDR Only.
- 2:06:05Now, Stabler, seven seconds left.
- 2:06:09Gives them all to Hubbard.
- 2:06:11And Hubbard trenches with it for a couple, three seconds.
- 2:06:15And the clock is stopped by the Dolphins.
- 2:06:17They use another timeout, three seconds to go.
- 2:06:21The crowd can't count the clock down.
- 2:06:23Some of the fans start on the field.
- 2:06:25But in an incredible display of order limits, when motioned back by the officials,
- 2:06:30they went right back off.
- 2:06:31Well, maybe they learned a lesson around here, Bill, because in a lot of parts,
- 2:06:34you know, this game would not be able to continue at this point.
- 2:06:37I think about Pittsburgh and that incredible game two years ago,
- 2:06:40when there were 5,000 people on the field at this point.
- 2:06:43Now the Raiders, three seconds left.
- 2:06:45Oakland 28, Miami 26.
- 2:06:49Stabler can fall on it here if he wants.
- 2:06:51He gives it to Hubbard, runs to the left, time is out.
- 2:06:54It's over. Hubbard's still on his feet.
- 2:06:56Mass by Colen.
- 2:06:57Come on, game is over.
- 2:06:58The Miami Dolphins are de-phoned.
- 2:07:01The Oakland Raiders hold the championship round of the ASA.
- 2:07:05John Madden with a precious football in his big, meaty right hand.
- 2:07:09All 270 pounds of him, twice to the top of the shoulders of his players.
- 2:07:15The crowd mulling around.
- 2:07:17The final score shows Oakland 28, Miami 26.
