Investing in silver can be very frustrating, but today we're
• 0:06
going to talk about what silver did.
• 0:08
Again, this is good news, guys. Silver just never seems to
• 0:14
disappoint. Have you heard that phrase?
• 0:17
  Everything that silver touches improves.
• 0:27
We're going to talk about a new application for silver another.
• 0:31
It seems like every week we get these massive news stories about
• 0:36
silver solid-state batteries a few weeks back.
• 0:40
But what's the latest news story?
• 0:42
We're going to dig into that in just a few seconds after I tell
• 0:45
you thank you for being here. You are the most important part
• 0:50
of Ron's basement. You're part of the group.
• 0:52
Some of you like to call yourselves basement dwellers.
• 0:55
Whatever you call yourself, you're always welcome here.

• 1:06
Whatever they're called is super appreciated, exciting and
• 1:12
interesting are two words I would use to describe this
• 1:15
latest news about silver self healing.
• 1:19
Breakthrough could be a game changer for electronics.
• 1:24
Silver Silver never disappoints. This article from our friends at
• 1:29
Kitco and Jordan Finiceth. Let's dig in guys.
• 1:33
Is silver self healing? I mean, when does it end?
• 1:38
Silver demand is based on industrial applications.
• 1:41
We know that solar panels, solid-state batteries,
• 1:44
electronics, you name it. The list of uses could soon
• 1:48
expand greatly thanks to a breakthrough discovery by
• 1:52
scientists in China. No wonder China's sucking in all
• 1:56
the world silver. Now they've discovered that
• 1:58
silver's self healing silver has the intrinsic capability of
• 2:04
autonomously self healing at the nanoscale level.
• 2:08
Basically guys, what that means that at a very microscopic small
• 2:12
level, this incredible discovery has been made that silver can
• 2:19
actually heal itself. And why is that such a big deal?
• 2:25
The concept of self healing in material science and engineering
• 2:29
was inspired by the innate ability of some living organisms
• 2:34
to self heal, like when you cut your finger right.
• 2:38
But thus far the focus has generally been on soft materials
• 2:43
like polymers and hydrogels. Quote for solid-state metals
• 2:47
like silver. One may intuitively imagine that
• 2:51
any form of self healing will be much more difficult to achieve
• 2:57
in blue. They're basically saying that
• 2:59
any previous attempts to have self healing in any type of
• 3:03
metal required some type of external trigger, catalyst
• 3:08
heating, mechanical stimulus, or electron beam irradiation.
• 3:12
Whether the autonomous self healing can occur in metal
• 3:16
solids without any external intervention remained a
• 3:21
scientific curiosity. In this study, the scientists
• 3:25
combined advanced in situ transmission electronic
• 3:28
microscopy called TEM with molecular dynamics MD
• 3:34
simulations to show that nanoscale silver can
• 3:39
autonomously repair itself from structural damage such as nano
• 3:44
cracks and nano pores without any external intervention.
• 3:49
The word nano means microscopic OK quote.
• 3:53
This remarkable ability is observed not only at room
• 3:56
temperature, but also at frigid temperatures as low as 173 K
• 4:02
notably over the same damaging area.
• 4:05
The repeated reversible self healing cycle can also be
• 4:10
achieved with the same level of efficiency.
• 4:15
So on your screen are some visual demonstrations of what
• 4:18
they discovered up here in the upper left corner.
• 4:21
See that big crack? Over time, the silver healed
• 4:25
itself. See this hole or divot?
• 4:28
Over time it healed itself. Same here, silver healed itself.
• 4:33
Same here and same here. It looks like an like an
• 4:36
  impression. Silver healed itself.
• 4:39
  This is breakthrough scientific news.
• 4:43
As an interesting and perhaps surprising result, the two
• 4:47
representative kinds of structural damage were observed
• 4:50
to undergo rapid self healing. Guys, this is silver without any
• 4:56
type of catalyst or or or push healing itself.
• 5:01
Again on a very microscopic level.
• 5:03
I don't think that we could like make a big scratch in one of our
• 5:07
American Silver Eagles and expect the next morning to wake
• 5:10
up and for that scratch to be healed.
• 5:12
But at a nano micro level, which is where a lot of the new
• 5:16
technological advances are coming with silver, this is big,
• 5:21
big news. Rapid self healing autonomously
• 5:24
within several dozens of minutes, with the healed regions
• 5:28
perfectly restoring the crystal lattice of silver with
• 5:34
atomically precise ordering on an atomic level.
• 5:40
We'll leave it at that. This is interesting comparing
• 5:43
silver to gold in the same scenario.
• 5:46
Unlike silver, gold did not show similar self healing behavior at
• 5:51
room temperature. Despite the fact that gold is
• 5:54
the most relevant element to silver in the periodic table and
• 5:58
they share many similarities in physical and chemical
• 6:02
properties, they say they successfully were able to
• 6:06
  reproduce this experiment several times.
• 6:12
The authors noted that the ability of silver to
• 6:15
autonomously self heal nanoscale damage at room temperature and
• 6:19
below shows a promising possibility for developing
• 6:23
damage tolerant components and devices at the sub micrometer
• 6:29
length scale. I want to get your hands on some
• 6:31
silver before it all self heals itself.

• 7:35
story about silver? Another big story, right?
• 7:39
Silver can heal itself. We know, right?
• 7:43
Nanoparticles are kind of the future.
• 7:45
We know microscopic amounts of silver and electronics.
• 7:49
But imagine if they could repair themselves from damage, which
• 7:54
apparently they can, right? And it's not just this.
• 7:59
It's everywhere we look. Water purification, solar
• 8:03
panels, the list just goes on and on for the uses of silver.
• 8:09
Is it clear to you? It's clear to me.
• 8:12
Silver really does improve everything it touches.
• 8:16
And hey, look, I'm touched that you joined me here in the
