- 0:00Yeah, another great environment, another
- 0:02sellout. So, just always have to start
- 0:04by thanking our fans. Um, you know,
- 0:06we're one and three in SEC play going
- 0:08into this game and, you know, they still
- 0:10just constantly show up and, um, you
- 0:13know, we don't win this game without
- 0:14them. So, um, I'll never not appreciate
- 0:17it. I'll never not be amazed with how
- 0:19incredible our fan base is. So, um, want
- 0:22to thank each and every one of them from
- 0:23from our team for being out there and
- 0:25supporting us. So, um, you know, hard
- 0:28fought game, man. um ugly game. Uh but I
- 0:31think you know obviously that that's
- 0:33that's the game that they wanted um
- 0:35because that was how they could you know
- 0:36keep it a low possession game and they
- 0:38did a good job of uh kind of slowing the
- 0:40tempo down and we kind of played at
- 0:42their speed and um you know they they
- 0:45limited us um in some areas. I thought
- 0:48our first half defense was as good as
- 0:50it's been all year. Um we did a great
- 0:52job of just building a wall,
- 0:53communicating our switches, did a great
- 0:55job of fronting the post. Um, and we our
- 0:58one-on-one defense was pretty good. Uh,
- 1:00second half, you know, I thought, um,
- 1:02they they kind of tried to spread us
- 1:04out, um, and drive us, and I thought too
- 1:06many times we allowed some easy ones
- 1:08around the rim. Uh, but as the game went
- 1:10on, I thought we did a better job of
- 1:11sitting on those right hands and and
- 1:13making plays. And, uh, you know, to turn
- 1:15that team over 15 times, they turned
- 1:17over, I think, 10 times a game was
- 1:19important. Um, we didn't do a whole lot
- 1:22off of those turnovers. Um, but you
- 1:25know, for the most part, you know, I
- 1:26thought defensively we were good. Uh, we
- 1:28didn't let our offense affect our
- 1:30defense and that's something that this
- 1:31team has been struggling with throughout
- 1:33the year. Um, and for us to only make
- 1:37two threes in that game and, you know,
- 1:40uh, we missed a ton of layups around the
- 1:42rim, you know, um,
- 1:45for us to be able to find a way to win
- 1:46that game, that's, you know, that's
- 1:48that's a positive. Um because
- 1:49offensively we've been really good and
- 1:52uh you know we got a lot of really
- 1:53really good looks. You know Elijah had
- 1:56like two or three that were or two that
- 1:57were like halfway down. Key had two that
- 1:59were halfway down. You know um so we got
- 2:02some really good looks and uh obviously
- 2:04we we didn't convert. So um you know
- 2:08Philip Yoic was phenomenal.
- 2:11I think that was like one of the first
- 2:12games that we haven't been doubled in
- 2:13the post this year. Um so you know
- 2:16Philip Philip listens. So, we were like,
- 2:18"Phil, go score the basketball this
- 2:19game. Stop looking to pass so much." He
- 2:22said, "Okay, coach." Um, and that's what
- 2:24he did. You know, he was great and uh
- 2:27he's really physical in there. He's
- 2:28really bouncy and he does a great job of
- 2:30just using his body to score on angles
- 2:32and uh you know, he was the difference
- 2:33in the game tonight. So, our two
- 2:35freshman bigs, you know, Philip and
- 2:37Sebastian were were incredible and um
- 2:39did a great job and uh really really
- 2:42impressed with Tahad tonight. Uh five
- 2:44assists, one turnover. He probably
- 2:45should had 12 assists because he did
- 2:47such a great job of getting the ball out
- 2:49and uh getting to his open teammates.
- 2:51You know, obviously didn't have the
- 2:53shooting night that he wanted um after
- 2:54making one early, but you know, only one
- 2:57turnover which was late. Uh did a pretty
- 2:59good job defensively kind of sitting
- 3:01down and guarding his man. So um did a
- 3:04great job of bouncing back from a tough
- 3:05game on Tuesday. So really proud of
- 3:06Tahad and you know Sebastian and Philip
- 3:09were great. So take any questions with
- 3:10that.
- 3:11Stephen, you've talked a lot about not
- 3:13letting your offense affect your defense
- 3:14in that first half when y'all couldn't
- 3:16seem to buy any jumpers. You guys, like
- 3:18you said, played your best first half
- 3:20defense. How how proud are you of your
- 3:22guys for doing that because that's
- 3:23something you've been harping on all
- 3:24season?
- 3:24>> Yeah, it's huge. I mean, to go from the
- 3:26effort we gave on um Wednesday at
- 3:29Missouri to that effort defensively
- 3:31tonight, you know, and I thought we
- 3:32actually guarded Missouri. Okay. Um
- 3:36we just, you know, they made a bunch
- 3:37they made a bunch of shots. Um our our
- 3:39guys did a really good job tonight of
- 3:41just, you know, being intentional. You
- 3:43know, we had a couple bad possessions
- 3:45where we, you know, let them drive it
- 3:46right and uh we got lost on the
- 3:48backside, but for the most part, you
- 3:50know, held that team to 39% from the
- 3:52field. Um you know, 15 turnovers. So
- 3:56thought our guys did a much better job
- 3:57tonight of just, you know, locking in
- 3:59and trying to have an identity
- 4:00defensively and um you know, held them
- 4:03down to 67 points. So proud of the guys
- 4:06for, you know, not letting, you know,
- 4:08our poor shooting performance impact
- 4:09what we do defensively.
- 4:12>> Coach, you mentioned it already. Uh,
- 4:14Philip, story of the game. Sway played a
- 4:15really good game as well. How do you get
- 4:17those guys being so young and this being
- 4:19a breakout moment for them? How do you
- 4:20allow that and almost encourage that
- 4:22down the road for for more performances
- 4:24like that?
- 4:25>> I mean, they've been pretty consistent.
- 4:26You know, they both played well against
- 4:27Missouri, too. Phil or Sebastian was
- 4:29just in foul trouble. You know, Philip
- 4:30played really well. Philips had he's
- 4:32been playing well since conference play
- 4:34started. So he'll just continue to build
- 4:35off of that. So they've been great. They
- 4:37know how important they are. You know,
- 4:38Sebastian knows that, you know, in order
- 4:40for us to be successful, he's got to be
- 4:42on the floor. So 33 minutes tonight,
- 4:44only, you know, uh, two fouls. So there
- 4:49was a couple around the room I wish he'd
- 4:50have been a little more physical and had
- 4:51more of a contest, but for the most
- 4:53part, you know, he he did a good job
- 4:55defensively. He does such a good job of
- 4:56just sitting down and guarding his yard.
- 4:58So, um, you know, to have two freshman
- 5:00like that that can have that big of an
- 5:02impact, you know, um, is substantial in
- 5:05this league. So, they, uh, played great.
- 5:07We're going to need him to continue to
- 5:08play great in order for us to win. Um,
- 5:10Coach Burl, just you already talked
- 5:12about Yovic, but can you elaborate a
- 5:15little bit more on his maturation this
- 5:17season about where he was to where he is
- 5:20now and how you get a young guy like
- 5:22that to to come along so consistently to
- 5:24where, you know, again, he was your
- 5:25leading scorer tonight and really showed
- 5:27to be a leader out there on the floor
- 5:29offensively?
- 5:29>> Yeah, he was, you know, he just he's so
- 5:32coachable. Like he listens to everything
- 5:34you say, even though he may not be able
- 5:35to understand half the words you're
- 5:37saying right now. uh that's gotten
- 5:39better as time's gone on, but man, like
- 5:41you know, he just every time you're
- 5:43talking, he's hanging on every word
- 5:45because he wants to just, you know, know
- 5:46exactly what we're doing. And you know,
- 5:48he's just incredibly coachable. Um can
- 5:50take tough criticism and uh you know,
- 5:53that's what he did overseas though, like
- 5:55he was a scoring, you know, undersized
- 5:57big over there. Like that's a lot of
- 6:00what he showed and a lot of, you know, I
- 6:02think we need to do a better job of
- 6:04putting him in those situations because
- 6:05he's capable of doing that. um you know
- 6:07against some some of the teams on our
- 6:09schedule and we're going to need him to.
- 6:10>> I'm sorry. Do you think the language
- 6:11barrier maybe makes him focus just a
- 6:13little bit harder than
- 6:14>> 100%. Yeah, he has to has to cuz you
- 6:17know I think when we're speaking you
- 6:19know we're communicating very quickly or
- 6:21not quickly but like there's a lot of
- 6:22information we're trying to get out
- 6:23there. So he's trying to like pick up on
- 6:25bits and pieces and you know he
- 6:26obviously watched a lot of film so he
- 6:28does a great job of paying attention in
- 6:29film but um as the year's gone on like
- 6:33the amount of information that he's
- 6:35missing has gone down dramatically. So
- 6:37he's really starting to pick up on
- 6:38everything that we're doing. So the
- 6:39language barrier definitely had a little
- 6:40bit of an impact early I think because
- 6:42he's probably overthinking a little bit
- 6:44because he's trying to do the right
- 6:45things and be in the right spots in the
- 6:47right places. Now it's just like all
- 6:48right I know what my role is. I got to
- 6:50go out there and defend. I got to go get
- 6:52vertical at the rim and you know if if
- 6:54they're going to start play calling for
- 6:56me in the post I got to go score the
- 6:57basketball. So he's just you know he's a
- 7:00mature kid. Um you know he's really
- 7:04coachable. He plays hard. He works hard.
- 7:07He's not soft and uh just does so many
- 7:10so many good things for us. You know I
- 7:12don't know how many offensive rebounds
- 7:13he has in SEC play but you know he's had
- 7:15two or three every single game. So he
- 7:17just has a great nose for the ball and
- 7:18you know does a great job of high
- 7:20pointing it and uh you know coming down
- 7:22with rebounds. So he's been a great
- 7:23spark for us at that position
- 7:25>> over there.
- 7:26>> Stephen obviously not a fun night for
- 7:28Keshan in terms of his foul trouble but
- 7:30he hits those four freebies at the end
- 7:32pretty much putting the game away for
- 7:33you guys. How big was that for him to
- 7:35stay engaged and come up like that late?
- 7:37>> Yeah I mean he's in every huddle
- 7:38clapping and you know encouraging his
- 7:39teammates and that's what we need you
- 7:41know when he's not able to affect the
- 7:43game with foul trouble. Um, yeah. I
- 7:46don't know what a charge is anymore. I I
- 7:48just I I I don't, you know, for five
- 7:50charges to be called tonight. I got to
- 7:52do a better I got to go look back and
- 7:53figure out like what a primary defender
- 7:55is and what they're entitled to because,
- 7:57you know, I've never seen I haven't I've
- 7:59watched a lot of basketball this year.
- 8:00I've not seen that many charges be
- 8:02called in the game. So, we got to make
- 8:04an adjustment if that's if that's how
- 8:05it's going to get officiated because he
- 8:07does such a great job of seeking
- 8:08contact. Um but we need him out there on
- 8:11the floor and you know he had four
- 8:12turnovers tonight but you know to his
- 8:14credit you know he stayed engaged he
- 8:16stayed locked in and then when we did a
- 8:18coach Bowman did a great job late with
- 8:20some offensive defensive substitutions
- 8:22he comes in and makes four free throws
- 8:23to kind of seal up the game. So did a
- 8:25great job of keeping his head on
- 8:26straight in a difficult night um to be
- 8:29able to you know come through for his
- 8:30teammates.
- 8:32threes were really key for that this
- 8:34team this year. Um just until they hit
- 8:37those last couple late under 25%. Just
- 8:39how how big was that? I know they were
- 8:41trying to spread you out a little bit
- 8:42more in the second half.
- 8:43>> Yeah, I mean we did a pretty good job um
- 8:47a guard three ball. There was a couple
- 8:48penetrations where I didn't like how
- 8:50much we helped. Uh but for the most
- 8:52part, you know, our switching uh allowed
- 8:54us to keep a body on a body and uh not
- 8:58let them get a bunch of threes up. you
- 8:59know, Mei makes three and, you know, two
- 9:01of them were just like, you know, but we
- 9:03we showed we've showed film of him, you
- 9:05know, making shots from like a step
- 9:07inside a half court. So, they know that
- 9:09he's capable of doing that. Uh, but our
- 9:11guys did a good job, you know, guarding
- 9:12the three ball. Thought when we were
- 9:14late, we did a good job of making a
- 9:15multiple effort and contesting it. Um,
- 9:18so really important piece of the game.
- 9:19You know, EJ Walker comes in and makes
- 9:22two. Like, you know, that wasn't really
- 9:24on the scouting report. Um but you know
- 9:28um you know teams are going to you know
- 9:30step up in those moments and you know he
- 9:32he actually played pretty well against
- 9:33Arkansas. Um so yeah it was good. Did
- 9:36did a pretty solid job. I mean they they
- 9:38average seven in win or seven in losses
- 9:41and 10 in wins. So um I mean if there
- 9:45there's a six differential so that's 18
- 9:48points differential on three. like we
- 9:51make we just shoot our season average,
- 9:54you know, we win that game by 15, you
- 9:56know, but for us not to make those shots
- 9:58and still continue to defend, that's
- 10:00progress.
- 10:01>> Last one right here.
- 10:02>> Yeah. And going off of that, I mean, you
- 10:03you've been talking about how this team
- 10:05had a top 10 offense coming into the
- 10:07game, but is there any extra value maybe
- 10:09to at this point in the year winning an
- 10:11ugly one, winning one where you can't
- 10:13shoot, and then it's just like, hey, you
- 10:14got to defend for all 40 minutes and
- 10:16grind it out. Yeah, I mean it it shows,
- 10:19you know, that's that's important, you
- 10:21know, because it's not going to be
- 10:22pretty every night because one, like
- 10:24teams are going to do things to take
- 10:25away some of your strengths offensively
- 10:27and when they do that or if you're just
- 10:29having a bad shooting night. We had a
- 10:30bad shooting night tonight. We missed a
- 10:31ton of easy ones around the rim. Uh cuz
- 10:33we we kind of rushed and they they did a
- 10:35pretty good job of being physical around
- 10:36the rim, but we rushed some shots and uh
- 10:39you know, we just didn't have it, you
- 10:40know, from the three ball tonight. you
- 10:41know, even though I thought we had a lot
- 10:43of really good looks, but for us to be
- 10:45able for this team to be able to grind
- 10:46out a win like that when it's an ugly
- 10:48game, you know, that's that's important
- 10:50because, you know, not every single one
- 10:52is going to be like Georgia&M and um
- 10:56Arkansas that's going to be all
- 10:57highscoring and we're going to be, you
- 10:58know, making shots. So, for us to have
- 10:59the confidence, you know, to see, all
- 11:02right, we can win some of these grind
- 11:03them out games um cuz that's what's
- 11:05going to, you know, that's going to
- 11:06happen on the road. You know, it might
- 11:07happen on Tuesday, you know, at at Old
- 11:09Miss. So, for us to be able to pull pull
- 11:12one through playing like that, you know,
- 11:14it's important. It's something that we
- 11:15can draw off of.
- 11:16>> Thanks, coach.
