- 0:00Speaker 1: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he
- 0:03Speaker 1: has visited and redeemed his people. Luke 1.68 Dear Heavenly Father,
- 0:12Speaker 1: As we prepare our hearts for the celebration of the
- 0:15Speaker 1: birth of your Son, we are filled with awe and gratitude.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We praise you for your divine intervention and love so
- 0:25Speaker 1: profound that you sent us a Saviour the greatest gift
- 0:30Speaker 1: humanity has ever received. Let the miracle of Christmas, the
- 0:35Speaker 1: birth of Jesus, the fulfillment of your promise, resonate deeply
- 0:40Speaker 1: within us. Help us remember and appreciate Christmas' true meaning
- 0:47Speaker 1: amidst the festive cheer, the lights, and the carols. We
- 0:51Speaker 1: praise you for your faithfulness, love that never fails, and
- 0:56Speaker 1: the promise of redemption. that was beautifully fulfilled on that
- 1:00Speaker 1: first Christmas night. Help us to live each day in
- 1:05Speaker 1: the light of this truth. In Jesus' name we pray.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:25Speaker 3: In despair and hurt, God's people wondered if deliverance would
- 1:28Speaker 3: ever come. The pain of sin and oppression bit at
- 1:32Speaker 3: their hearts. They needed deliverance. From the hopeless ashes of Israel,
- 1:37Speaker 3: the God of all creation made a promise. Through the
- 1:39Speaker 3: prophet Malachi, he spoke a song of hope. Behold, I
- 1:44Speaker 3: will send my messenger to you, he declared. He will
- 1:49Speaker 3: prepare the way before me. He will prepare the way
- 1:54Speaker 3: of the Lord. He is coming. The people's hearts ached
- 1:59Speaker 3: for the promised deliverer. But before he would come... a
- 2:02Speaker 3: voice would cry out to hearken his arrival. The voice
- 2:06Speaker 3: of one crying in the wilderness, prepare the way of
- 2:11Speaker 3: the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for
- 2:16Speaker 3: our God. Before the Savior's arrival, a voice would cry out.
- 2:21Speaker 3: He would have the spirit of the Lord like the
- 2:23Speaker 3: prophet Elijah. He would be the forerunner, the one to
- 2:26Speaker 3: prepare the way.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:33Speaker 2: Bible in a Year podcast. Today we're continuing the story
- 2:37Speaker 2: of Mary. Elizabeth is in the throes of labor and
- 2:41Speaker 2: Mary is about to glimpse her own future. The baby
- 2:45Speaker 2: born from Elizabeth and Zechariah is no ordinary child. He's
- 2:49Speaker 2: the forerunner for the Messiah, the voice that Malachi and
- 2:53Speaker 2: Isaiah prophesied. The birth of John the Baptist harkens to
- 2:57Speaker 2: the beginning of God's redemptive gospel. Just as the ministry
- 3:02Speaker 2: of John paved the way for the ministry of Jesus,
- 3:05Speaker 2: the birth of John paved the way for the birth
- 3:07Speaker 2: of Jesus. Without these events, Mary would not have been
- 3:11Speaker 2: ready for the struggles ahead. Her time with Elizabeth and
- 3:15Speaker 2: Zechariah gave her the strength and courage to face her
- 3:18Speaker 2: future with fearlessness. This story is inspired by the Gospel
- 3:24Speaker 2: of Luke. These events with Mary, Elizabeth, and Zechariah represent
- 3:29Speaker 2: a fulcrum between the Old and the New Testaments. The
- 3:33Speaker 2: covenant of law, the prophets, and the priests is about
- 3:37Speaker 2: to transition into the new covenant of grace, Christ, and
- 3:41Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth is an older woman about to
- 3:45Speaker 2: give birth to Israel's last prophet. Beside her is Mary,
- 3:50Speaker 2: the young virgin carrying the promised Messiah. This moment represents
- 3:54Speaker 2: the passing of the torch. 2 Corinthians 5, verse 17
- 4:00Speaker 2: tells us that the old has passed and the new
- 4:02Speaker 2: has come. This moment encapsulates that idea. Elizabeth and Zechariah
- 4:09Speaker 2: won't be mentioned again. Their stories serve as a transition
- 4:13Speaker 2: from the old to the new. As she beholds all
- 4:17Speaker 2: these events, Mary will find the strength to carry out
- 4:20Speaker 2: her role in God's magnificent plan. So let's immerse ourselves
- 4:25Speaker 2: now in the story And afterward, we'll unpack Christmas truths
- 4:29Speaker 2: to encourage our souls.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Under the mantle of the evening stars, Mary pushed open
- 4:36Speaker 3: the door to Elizabeth and Zachariah's home. The house was
- 4:40Speaker 3: a symphony of chaos and urgency, and at the center
- 4:43Speaker 3: was Elizabeth, crumpled in the throes of labor.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Mary!
- 4:46Speaker 3: Elizabeth cried with a nervous smile.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It's time for this old woman to see what she's
- 4:51Speaker 1: made of. Come by my side.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Mary rushed to her side. her hands shaking as she
- 4:55Speaker 3: held onto Elizabeth's clammy fingers. The older woman's face was flushed,
- 5:00Speaker 3: her eyes brimming with a wild mixture of fear, anticipation
- 5:03Speaker 3: and joy. Zachariah, rendered mute by the angel, paced outside
- 5:08Speaker 3: with worry etched across his weathered face. Mary glanced around
- 5:11Speaker 3: the room, her heart echoing the tumultuous atmosphere. The walls
- 5:15Speaker 3: seemed to pulsate with a life of their own, echoing
- 5:18Speaker 3: the rhythmic cries of the labouring woman. The room smelled
- 5:22Speaker 3: of sweat and fear. Yet beneath it, there was a
- 5:24Speaker 3: faint but persistent aroma of hope.
- 5:27Speaker 1: You're doing wonderfully, Elizabeth.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Mary soothed, brushing the hair off Elizabeth's forehead.
- 5:32Speaker 1: He's nearly here.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Elizabeth let out a primal cry. Her body seized with
- 5:37Speaker 3: another contraction. There was a raw vulnerability in her eyes.
- 5:40Speaker 3: It hurts. Elizabeth gasped, squeezing Mary's hand. I know. Mary murmured,
- 5:46Speaker 3: her heart aching with sympathy. She saw a glimpse into
- 5:49Speaker 3: her own future.
- 5:50Speaker 1: But it'll be worth it.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Just a little longer.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Finally, the sun began its rise over the hills, painting
- 5:57Speaker 3: the sky with hues of orange and pink. Elizabeth gave
- 6:01Speaker 3: one last mighty push, and the room was filled with
- 6:03Speaker 3: a cry of a newborn. Mary felt a jolt of
- 6:06Speaker 3: joy surge as she saw him. As soon as Zachariah
- 6:09Speaker 3: heard his son's screams, he burst through the door to
- 6:12Speaker 3: cradle his son in his arms. A mixture of awe
- 6:15Speaker 3: and disbelief on his face as he beheld the miracle child.
- 6:19Speaker 3: A sense of divine realization seeped into the room. There
- 6:23Speaker 3: was a sweet stillness and purity to the moment. Mary
- 6:26Speaker 3: looked at the newborn babe and remembered he was no
- 6:29Speaker 3: ordinary child. Mary approached and reached out a finger to
- 6:33Speaker 3: the child. He wrapped his tiny hand around her finger.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Mary's heart fluttered with hope this child was going to
- 6:40Speaker 3: be the forerunner for hers, a voice crying out from
- 6:42Speaker 3: the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord. Zachariah
- 6:46Speaker 3: held the boy up high, still unable to speak. and
- 6:49Speaker 3: mouthed a prayer to the Lord. He kissed the son's
- 6:51Speaker 3: forehead and gave him to Elizabeth. She caressed his cheek
- 6:55Speaker 3: with the back of her hand and sang a lullaby.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Mary's heart melted with affection. She watched Zachariah wrap his
- 7:02Speaker 3: arms around Elizabeth and couldn't help but think about Joseph.
- 7:06Speaker 3: She had often dreamed about them having children of their own.
- 7:10Speaker 3: She imagined him wrapping her in his arms as they
- 7:12Speaker 3: beheld their child. She wondered, Mary's heart ached out of
- 7:20Speaker 3: longing for a normal life, but God had other plans.
- 7:23Speaker 3: She prayed silently to the Lord again and rededicated herself
- 7:27Speaker 3: to his plans. Eight days passed, and the newborn was
- 7:30Speaker 3: to be circumcised and given a name according to tradition.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Everyone gathered around for the occasion. The birth of this
- 7:37Speaker 3: child had become famous. They marveled at the baby, wondering
- 7:40Speaker 3: what the Lord had in store for him. He should
- 7:42Speaker 3: be named Zachariah, after his father, they all suggested. But
- 7:46Speaker 3: the Lord had other plans. Zachariah held his child tightly.
- 7:50Speaker 3: With a gentle yet resonating voice, Zachariah was finally able
- 7:55Speaker 3: to speak. His name is John. His voice rang out
- 8:00Speaker 3: clear and certain. Slicing through the collective surprise, the air
- 8:04Speaker 3: seemed thickened with awe. Zechariah walked with his child and
- 8:08Speaker 3: held him up to the Lord. Small tears slowly streaked
- 8:12Speaker 3: down his cracked cheeks. Beaming with fatherly pride and gratitude,
- 8:16Speaker 3: Zechariah spoke a prophecy, saying, Praise be to the Lord,
- 8:21Speaker 3: the God of Israel, for his eyes have not turned blind,
- 8:26Speaker 3: nor his heart deaf to the plight of his people.
- 8:30Speaker 3: He has visited us, not as a ghost in the night,
- 8:33Speaker 3: but as a redeemer cloaked in daylight. Zechariah began, his
- 8:38Speaker 3: voice echoing through the people.
- 8:40Speaker 4: From the lineage of his servant David, he has kindled
- 8:44Speaker 4: a beacon, a horn of salvation, as his prophets, those
- 8:48Speaker 4: holy heralds of old, once foretold.
- 8:52Speaker 3: His gaze moved across the faces gathered, their eyes reflecting
- 8:55Speaker 3: the radiant hope kindled by his words. Salvation is upon us,
- 9:00Speaker 3: not just from our visible adversaries, but also from the
- 9:04Speaker 3: unseen enemies of hatred and malice that creep within the
- 9:07Speaker 3: hearts of men. His mercy unfurls like the petals of
- 9:12Speaker 3: a sacred bloom, echoing the promise given to our forefathers,
- 9:17Speaker 3: reverberating the holy covenant he etched in the sands of time.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Zechariah's voice took on a reflective timber. The oath he
- 9:26Speaker 3: made to our father Abraham has not been forgotten. for
- 9:30Speaker 3: his promises are not of the fleeting kind. He has
- 9:34Speaker 3: pledged to deliver us from the grasp of our foes,
- 9:38Speaker 3: to unshackle us from the chains of fear. In this
- 9:42Speaker 3: newfound freedom, we are able to serve him, our lives
- 9:48Speaker 3: as a testament of his grace, steeped in righteousness and sanctity.
- 9:54Speaker 3: A tender smile graced his lips as he gazed into
- 9:57Speaker 3: the eyes of his son. And you my son, will
- 10:01Speaker 3: be hailed as a prophet of the Most High. Your
- 10:05Speaker 3: path is laid before the face of the Lord, a
- 10:09Speaker 3: trailblazer in the divine narrative. Your voice will resonate with
- 10:14Speaker 3: the knowledge of salvation, a melody of redemption for his people,
- 10:19Speaker 3: a song of sins forgiven. His voice, filled with fatherly pride, continued,
- 10:25Speaker 3: In the tender mercy of our God, a new day dawns,
- 10:31Speaker 3: The morning light from the heavens above will touch us
- 10:34Speaker 3: and a divine hand to heal and guide us. It
- 10:38Speaker 3: will shine upon those who dwell in the shadows, upon
- 10:42Speaker 3: those ensnared by the fear of death, a beacon to
- 10:46Speaker 3: guide our steps into the path of peace. As Zachariah's
- 10:51Speaker 3: voice tapered off, a reverent silence filled the air. Their
- 10:56Speaker 3: hearts brimming with hope, they gazed at the baby in
- 10:58Speaker 3: Elizabeth's arms. the prophet of the Most High, the voice
- 11:02Speaker 3: that would echo in the wilderness, preparing for the way
- 11:04Speaker 3: of the Lord. They felt the stirrings of a new dawn,
- 11:08Speaker 3: a divine narrative unfolding, the whisper of prophecy dancing in
- 11:12Speaker 3: the wind. And they knew the long night was ending.
- 11:16Speaker 3: The day of redemption was at hand. As days turned
- 11:20Speaker 3: into weeks, Mary watched John grow, his every milestone a
- 11:24Speaker 3: quiet prelude to her own impending motherhood. Yet amidst the joy...
- 11:29Speaker 3: Her heart fluttered with a fresh wave of uncertainty. How
- 11:32Speaker 3: was she going to tell Joseph? The law regarding adultery
- 11:35Speaker 3: was clear about such matters, and the consequences were harsh.
- 11:39Speaker 3: How was she going to convince him that she was
- 11:41Speaker 3: not unfaithful? How would she convince her own father? On
- 11:44Speaker 3: the last night, Mary gazed up at the twinkling tapestry
- 11:47Speaker 3: of stars, her heart heavy with silent prayers and unspoken fears.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Tomorrow she would return to Nazareth, Tomorrow she would tell Joseph.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Tomorrow her life would change forever. But tonight she was
- 12:01Speaker 3: just Mary, cradling the promise of salvation in her womb.
- 12:06Speaker 3: As she closed her eyes, the whispers of the night
- 12:09Speaker 3: seemed to draw her into a dance of destiny, promising
- 12:12Speaker 3: a tale of faith, love and divine miracles. Yet with
- 12:17Speaker 3: the promise came a shadow of uncertainty, a mystery that
- 12:20Speaker 3: would shape the destiny of humankind.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Account of the birth and naming of John the Baptist,
- 12:27Speaker 2: intertwined with the Christmas narrative, is a tale of prophetic
- 12:31Speaker 2: fulfillment and new life, brimming with potential. Upon the birth
- 12:36Speaker 2: and naming of his son, Zechariah is filled with the
- 12:39Speaker 2: Holy Spirit and offers a prophetic song, now known as
- 12:43Speaker 2: the Benedictus. His prophecy reaffirms God's promises to Israel, and specifically,
- 12:50Speaker 2: it prophesies the role his son John will play in
- 12:53Speaker 2: this divine plan. stating, And you, child, will be called
- 12:57Speaker 2: the prophet of the Most High, for you will go
- 13:00Speaker 2: before the Lord to prepare his ways. This prophecy underscores
- 13:05Speaker 2: the role of John the Baptist, paving the way for
- 13:08Speaker 2: the Messiah, the essence of the Christmas story. This story
- 13:12Speaker 2: provides one of those moments when comparing Elijah to John
- 13:16Speaker 2: the Baptist. The similarities between John and the prophet Elijah
- 13:20Speaker 2: are striking and significant. Both were prophetic voices in their generations,
- 13:25Speaker 2: calling people back to God. Both led lives marked by
- 13:29Speaker 2: simplicity and separation from societal norms. John, like Elijah, was
- 13:35Speaker 2: a fearless preacher, confronting the wrongs of his time. Jesus
- 13:40Speaker 2: affirmed this parallel when he said in Matthew chapter 11,
- 13:43Speaker 2: For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
- 13:48Speaker 2: And if you are willing to accept it, he is
- 13:50Speaker 2: the Elijah who was to come. As we reflect on
- 13:53Speaker 2: the Christmas story, the figure of John, akin to Elijah,
- 13:57Speaker 2: is a powerful reminder of God's faithfulness in sending messengers
- 14:01Speaker 2: to prepare his people for his coming. The birth of
- 14:05Speaker 2: John the Baptist is a story of new life and potential.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Zechariah and Elizabeth, considered too old to have children, were
- 14:14Speaker 2: blessed with a son vital to God's salvific plan. John's life,
- 14:20Speaker 2: filled with great potential, reminds us that it's never too
- 14:23Speaker 2: late for new beginnings with God. The Christmas season embodies
- 14:28Speaker 2: this message of new life and potential. With the birth
- 14:32Speaker 2: of Jesus, new life was given to all who believed
- 14:35Speaker 2: in him. This season invites us to see our lives,
- 14:39Speaker 2: that no matter our past or present circumstances, as brimming
- 14:43Speaker 2: with divine potential. As we reflect on this story, let's
- 14:48Speaker 2: be reminded of God's prophetic promises fulfilled in the Christmas
- 14:52Speaker 2: story and the beautiful themes of new life and potential.
- 14:57Speaker 2: May these reflections inspire us to prepare our hearts for
- 15:00Speaker 2: the coming of Christ and to embrace the potential God
- 15:04Speaker 2: has placed within each of us, not just during the
- 15:06Speaker 2: Christmas season, but all through our lives. In our next episode,
- 15:12Speaker 2: we finally meet Joseph, Mary's betrothed. Will he accept Mary's
- 15:17Speaker 2: explanation or Take advantage of his right to stone her.
