- 0:14Welcome back football fans. I'm Roberto gridiron
- 0:21updates banter with the boys we have jacob with
- 0:24us what's up dude hey rob how's it going surviving
- 0:27surviving and the other jay stun justin the in
- 0:32-house pack a fan so you say it in french yeah
- 0:35thanks for having me yeah feeling good off a
- 0:37good w so we got uh jay jay jay The better version,
- 0:42I guess, hopefully after the Vikings fans are
- 0:45crying right now. But, yeah, we're here back
- 0:48for another episode, week 13. Yeah, we'll get
- 0:52to our five -game recap right after this. Oh,
- 0:55Kevin, behind the camera. Yo, Kev. It's beautiful
- 0:59back there. So, spin it, Kevin. We're back. banter
- 1:11with the boys jj justin jacob first game packers
- 1:15and the vikings We'll just hand it off over to
- 1:19you so we can get your gloating out of the way.
- 1:21That's all that Jordan Love did with running
- 1:23back number two. Emmanuel Wilson? Yeah, Emmanuel
- 1:27Wilson. He had, I believe, his first 100 -yard
- 1:30game, and they continue to talk about these feel
- 1:32-good stories when they get these folks in that
- 1:35don't get their shot. So it was really cool to
- 1:37see him get his shot. As a Packer fan, he's one
- 1:39of those guys that just was lingering in the
- 1:41back whenever Josh Jacobs would get a breather
- 1:43or... josh jacobs was struggling he would inject
- 1:47some excitement so i think packerland was really
- 1:49excited for him to get his chance very similar
- 1:52to years ago now current viking when aaron jones
- 1:55got his chance and everyone was excited to see
- 1:57him get going i think there's a Some of that
- 1:59there. So that was a lot of fun. But you go look
- 2:02at the numbers. Jordan Love didn't have to do
- 2:04a lot. He did what he needed to do. I think the
- 2:06most impressive play was on a third down, and
- 2:09Vikings blitzed him, brought the whole house,
- 2:12and he was able to lob that up to Dontavian Wicks.
- 2:15That was a money pass, but he just had to do
- 2:17the things that he had to do. Didn't need to
- 2:19play hero ball. It was all about the defense
- 2:22and just keeping J .J. McCarthy off balance all
- 2:24day. Yeah, it was a pretty good... Showing there
- 2:27for the Packers. Defensively, I mean, obviously,
- 2:30you know, McCarthy did not have his best game
- 2:33so far. I did want to give the credit, you know,
- 2:36Jordan hitting those 10 -yard outs absolutely
- 2:38just killed us all day long. Whenever they needed
- 2:4010 yards on a scenario and then had a couple
- 2:43decent third -down plays. Did you get a chance
- 2:46to see that game, or what was your feeling, Mr.
- 2:48Jacob? Yeah, we got to watch most of it. We were
- 2:52bouncing back and forth between that one and
- 2:54then the Bear Steelers game because we were lucky
- 2:56enough to have both games broadcast at the same
- 2:59time. A little split screen rolling. I like it.
- 3:02Some grandpa's cough syrup just sipping down
- 3:05too. Yeah. That's dumb and dumber if you guys
- 3:08don't know. But so my take out of all of it,
- 3:12Packers played well, don't get me wrong, but
- 3:14there's a lot of, I think there's a lot of criticism
- 3:17and critiquing to be had with the Vikings. Kocene
- 3:21is play calling. The first instance to me was
- 3:26in the second quarter. They had a third and one.
- 3:28Yeah. And then they tried to push it with Hawkinson
- 3:32and didn't get it. didn't like that play no i
- 3:35didn't save that save that for your fourth down
- 3:37play like do just like a normal if you're gonna
- 3:40try and get that one don't try and be cute about
- 3:42it on third down because that's a great play
- 3:45or play action opportunity right there it is
- 3:47on the third down like that then they totally
- 3:51Just wasted that, and then they couldn't get
- 3:52it on fourth and one either. So losing out on
- 3:55that. And then they just got away from running
- 3:57the football. I thought the Vikings were doing
- 3:59a really good job of running the ball with both
- 4:03their backs. They were averaging almost five
- 4:05yards a carry. Even when you're down two scores
- 4:08at 11, they just stopped running the ball. And
- 4:11we're just like, all right, JJ, we need you to
- 4:13try and be our hero. And Green Bay just. teed
- 4:18off on them yeah they started smothering him
- 4:20yeah you could tell uh mccarthy is really looking
- 4:23at the defensive line right now there was multiple
- 4:25plays i was looking on the all 22 or he just
- 4:28completely missed multiple receivers that were
- 4:30wide open in that secondary uh i thought maybe
- 4:33that was gonna be a thing we could key on with
- 4:35the packers kind of coming with a questionable
- 4:37secondary to start the year um how long's jacobs
- 4:41is this probably one week he's out is this what
- 4:43they're looking at yeah i think they did this
- 4:46To get ready for Detroit. I would be surprised
- 4:48if he does not play in Detroit. I think he could
- 4:52have gone on Sunday, but I think it was more
- 4:55out of protecting him and looking at the rest
- 4:57of the season. Getting back to J .J. McCarthy,
- 5:01I think the thing that surprised me watching
- 5:03the game is you look at the very beginning of
- 5:06the game, and they were going to Justin Jefferson.
- 5:08They were getting some really good traction,
- 5:10and there were moments where they would go for
- 5:12the short passing game, which can help offset.
- 5:16a running game if you feel like it's not working
- 5:18or you're struggling patriot ball yeah and they
- 5:20didn't do that so if you're if you're nervous
- 5:23of the rush what are the two biggest ways that
- 5:26you can circumvent that number one is play action
- 5:29number two is this short pass and i felt like
- 5:31they got they went away from that way too quickly
- 5:34and i think that was a huge huge piece for them
- 5:36too he's just holding onto the ball way too long
- 5:38Yeah, especially in that second half. You could
- 5:41see it was really affecting him. Did you guys
- 5:43see that punt, the price? Did you think it was
- 5:46his bad or was it just a bad bounce? I think
- 5:48it was a bad bounce. Yeah, very unlucky, but
- 5:51I would imagine. in viking land that's really
- 5:53difficult too because that's happened a couple
- 5:55times to him over the last few weeks so it's
- 5:57how long do you put them in that position and
- 5:59when does the coach come in and put someone else
- 6:01in yes and i feel like that's really momentum
- 6:03change right there because that was actually
- 6:05we got them to punt you know and then maybe that
- 6:08was our opportunity to get back in the game i
- 6:09think we were down it was four point game at
- 6:11that point yeah and then you guys actually got
- 6:14just a field goal out of that yeah um but after
- 6:16that it just seemed like we were trying to push
- 6:18the issue a little bit you got really downhill
- 6:21so I mean, the Vikings weren't really out of
- 6:24it until the, I don't know, last, what, 10 minutes
- 6:27left on the fourth? Yeah, the Vikings' defense
- 6:30played great. They were on the field too much.
- 6:31That was the problem with them, but, you know.
- 6:33What do you expect out of a Flores defense to
- 6:35show up in that way? And then you can see where
- 6:37the Micah Parsons came off. When you get a team
- 6:40that's down and you know they're passing, that's
- 6:41really when he is the most effective. So Packers
- 6:45win 23 -6. That puts them at 7 -3, and the Vikings
- 6:49are at 4 -7. Let's move on to the next game.
- 6:53We had the Indianapolis Colts versus the Kansas
- 6:58City Chiefs. Chiefs. Sneaking this one out, 23
- 7:03-20 in overtime. I do believe the Colts got up
- 7:06early on that game. I was kind of paying attention
- 7:10more on my phone during that game. What did you
- 7:14think about that game, Jacob? What did you see?
- 7:17All right, Dennis Green quote here. The Colts
- 7:20are who I thought they are. Okay, okay. My thought
- 7:26process has always been with the Colts this year.
- 7:29at eight and two it's like are they legit or
- 7:31not uh but when you look at their record they
- 7:35won't Out of their eight wins, only two of them
- 7:38are against teams with winning records. Everybody
- 7:40else is at or below 500. They played nobody.
- 7:43Exactly. And now they're going to get into the
- 7:46tough end of their schedule now. With Chiefs,
- 7:49you've got two against the Texans still, another
- 7:51one against the Jags. I think we're really going
- 7:54to see at this point who the Colts really are.
- 7:59I felt like they played to not lose the game
- 8:02rather than to play to win it, allowing the Chiefs
- 8:05to come back. uh what they were what up 11 yeah
- 8:09and then allowing them to tie and the chiefs
- 8:11just like had these long drives to just wear
- 8:14out your defense short quick passes hey mccarthy
- 8:17yeah check that out and and that wears out your
- 8:21wears out the defense that plays to their advantage
- 8:23like as soon as it hits overtime that defense
- 8:25that colts defense absolutely gassed and so um
- 8:29with the colts not being able to get any points
- 8:31in their first possession it was super easy then
- 8:34for my homes to just get into field goal range
- 8:36easy peasy yeah there i feel like there's been
- 8:39a couple games when they played better competition
- 8:41when they had opportunity to put the you know
- 8:43close the door nail in the coffin whatever way
- 8:45you want to look at it and they've kind of you
- 8:48know took the took the pedal off the gas and
- 8:50let other teams back in would you was your thought
- 8:53process of that game or how did you view it moving
- 8:56on yeah your team yeah i think jake had some
- 8:59really good points to share i think the the biggest
- 9:02things i saw where they limited Jonathan Taylor.
- 9:04He had 58 rushing yards off of like 18 or 19
- 9:08rushes. He's kind of disappeared a little bit.
- 9:10He had that three -tutty game. You do that and
- 9:12it shows who they are, right? I think that was
- 9:15a big piece. And Jones didn't throw a touchdown
- 9:17after the second quarter. So in the second half,
- 9:20that's where the Chiefs turned it up, their defense
- 9:22turned it up, and they limited them to field
- 9:24goals after the fact. And then to Jake's point,
- 9:26these long drives that kept the defense on the
- 9:30field. I think there was a drive that was almost
- 9:33a quarter is what it felt like. So when the defense
- 9:36is on the field that long, that's going to create
- 9:39issues. You're going to have an offense that's
- 9:41cold. You're going to have a defense that's gassed.
- 9:43And they did just enough playing the clock -managed
- 9:47game to put Mahomes and Andy Reid in a position
- 9:50to win that one. Really impressive win. I don't
- 9:54expect anything else from the Chiefs. Just a
- 9:55really messy, nasty win as they try to get into
- 9:58this playoff picture. Yeah, that puts them at
- 10:016 -5, drops the Colts down to 8 -3. So, yeah,
- 10:05it's starting to get crunch time. I'm just thinking
- 10:09about my fantasy football. I think we have two
- 10:11weeks left. So, I was like, I mean, the playoffs,
- 10:13you know, usually when they end up fantasy football,
- 10:15it's kind of that do -or -die aspect in the real
- 10:17NFL, too. So, yeah, Chiefs just slowly staying
- 10:22alive. You know, they're in the hunt, getting
- 10:25that playoff. They do have a tough division with
- 10:28some division games. coming up too um getting
- 10:31down early like that i was like oh is this you
- 10:33know the chiefs you know getting them under 500
- 10:36this late in the season it was going to be kind
- 10:38of interesting so yeah um colts yeah they're
- 10:41you know getting a little banged up too the season
- 10:43starting on your best abilities your availability
- 10:45most of the time at this part of the season so
- 10:47agreed yeah dropping them all so we'll uh well
- 10:52four minutes in we'll move around anyways because
- 10:55Sick of talking about the Chiefs. We have the
- 10:58Yinzers Steelers versus the Chicago Bears. The
- 11:03Bears coming out with a victory, 31 -28. Chicago's
- 11:11hot right now. This was an exciting game. It
- 11:13was. I was not expecting this many points. Then
- 11:18the Bears scored 17 unanswered, you know, after
- 11:21trailing 21 to 14. I was kind of obviously cheering
- 11:25for the Steelers just because I'm a NFC North
- 11:28guy. So you always want the division forward
- 11:30to lose. bears in first place what do you think
- 11:33about that packers fan i think if you go and
- 11:35look at who they've played the next three or
- 11:38four weeks will tell a lot about every team in
- 11:40the nfc nope no two weeks two weeks after after
- 11:43detroit circle it on the calendar huh well check
- 11:46this out it's in two weeks and then There's a
- 11:50break. We each play another team, and then we
- 11:52play each other again. So in the span of three
- 11:53weeks, we'll have both of those games done. So
- 11:55you'll know everything you need to know about
- 11:57both teams at that point, just who they are.
- 11:59I think the thing that concerns me, if I'm a
- 12:01Bears fan, is how much you let the Steelers do,
- 12:05knowing what version of the Steelers offense
- 12:07you got. Is that game different if Aaron Rodgers
- 12:10plays? 100 % it's different. Would you agree
- 12:11the same way? Yeah, 100%. Aaron Rodgers still
- 12:14owns the Bears. Still owns them. Mark that down.
- 12:17Owning real estate. what is that uh i'm trying
- 12:21to think of the main road there next to the bean
- 12:23the michigan avenue boom so yeah it was yeah
- 12:30they slowly came back Caleb continuing to get
- 12:35it done. Really unconventional. They did have
- 12:38their backup running back, Kyle. Anyone know
- 12:41how to pronounce that? I keep thinking it's like
- 12:43Menunga or something. Menunga sounds perfect
- 12:45for this thing. And you had old Mason Rudolph
- 12:49coming back and filling in for Aaron Rodgers.
- 12:51Got up early, looked okay in the beginning of
- 12:54the game, and then... Yeah, and then D .J. Moore
- 12:57was just wide open on a couple touchdown passes.
- 13:00I don't know where the Steelers' defense. On
- 13:02another note, though, I did see that T .J. Watt
- 13:05passed his brother J .J. Rod and sacks within
- 13:09the family. I don't know. Was it the Hall of
- 13:11Watts? Hall of Watts, yeah. What a way to do
- 13:15it, though, because it was that strip sack, fumble,
- 13:18touchdown. What an amazing way to do it. Yeah,
- 13:21it was a pretty epic way. I can only imagine
- 13:23that pitcher hanging on his mantle because you
- 13:26know he's going to have it just like Thanksgiving
- 13:28and Christmas. He's going to gift it to his brother.
- 13:31There's the game gift of the year right there.
- 13:34That's awesome. But to get back to the Bears
- 13:36for one second, I've got to give Caleb his flowers.
- 13:39What he is doing with Ben Johnson is remarkable.
- 13:41I think this is the talent everyone saw from
- 13:43Caleb last year. It makes you nervous if you're
- 13:45an NFC North fan of another team just knowing
- 13:48he's got this. in him the only problem is are
- 13:51they going to stay hot at the time that it matters
- 13:53but what they're doing right now is incredible
- 13:55would you rank him above love right now i think
- 13:58right now because there's too much inconsistency
- 14:00i think you have to right man it's a fair take
- 14:02as a whole team as a whole team no but i think
- 14:05him as a person what he's doing he had over 300
- 14:08passing yards and three touchdowns last week
- 14:10i think are pretty close to it so he's he's continuing
- 14:13to show what he can do and i you know i go back
- 14:16to a couple weeks ago i think they were playing
- 14:18the commanders in that comeback game and what
- 14:20he he threw a dime to colston loveland to win
- 14:23the game towards the very end of the game or
- 14:25an ot like he's got that that killer instinct
- 14:28that dna inside of him that is allowing them
- 14:30to continue to win so it's not just these other
- 14:32pieces around him like sometimes you had with
- 14:34goff in detroit it's it's him and they're building
- 14:37around him i think they're building something
- 14:38special and i think the rest of the nfc north's
- 14:41gonna have to to put them back in their place
- 14:44in the cellar where they belong. Yeah, that gets
- 14:47the Bears to 8 -3. I mean, historically, I'm
- 14:51assuming this is probably the best start they've
- 14:53had in a while. Yeah, probably. And then Steelers
- 14:59dropped 6 -5, which now is tied with Jacobs Ravens
- 15:04over there after a 1 -4 start. 1 -5 start. Everyone
- 15:09thought the Ravens were dead and out of it. Guess
- 15:12who's in first place in the AFC North now? No
- 15:15one thought they were out of it. Get off your
- 15:16high horse. We all knew once Lamar came back
- 15:19that they'd be probably a contender. And that
- 15:23was kind of their toughest part of the schedule.
- 15:25We're getting sidetracked on the Ravens here.
- 15:26But where are we at, Kevin? We're at the five
- 15:29-minute mark, so let's move on then because we
- 15:32got more football to talk about here. The Tampa
- 15:36Bay, Tampa Bay Buccaneers versus the L .A. Rams.
- 15:39Rams coming out 34 -7 in a complete domination.
- 15:44What a thumping. I kind of mentally checked out
- 15:47about halftime, which I think everyone put out
- 15:5031 -7 at half. Anything stick out of this game
- 15:55for you, Jacob? So when I was sending my picks
- 15:58over to Smelty last week, I thought that this
- 16:01was going to be like... I thought this was going
- 16:05to be like the game of the week because like
- 16:07Baker Mayfield bucks, that attitude going toe
- 16:10to toe against, I guess right now you're going
- 16:13to argue the best team in the NFL, the Rams and
- 16:16just what kind of like slug fest this was going
- 16:19to be. And then it was just flat. The Rams defense
- 16:23just came out strong. Um, that. Pick six, just
- 16:27ripping it out of Kate Otten's hands and just,
- 16:30like, running it. It was just, like, I think
- 16:31set the tone where it was like, yeah, this is
- 16:34the Rams game tonight. Yeah, they're just vibing
- 16:37right now. And, I mean, Stafford's got to be
- 16:40the MVP. Let me gush over a couple of these guys
- 16:43for a minute. He is 100 % the MVP. What he is
- 16:46doing right now is incredible. And he talked
- 16:48about this a week or two ago. When you go, you
- 16:51know, when you're in the league as long as he
- 16:53is, everything slows down even more. Yes, sir,
- 16:55yeah. We hear that so often, and what he's able
- 16:58to do to these defenses is crazy. I thought their
- 17:00biggest challenge would be Seattle, and he proved
- 17:03me and a lot of people wrong about how they don't
- 17:05have a challenge right now. They haven't faced
- 17:06a challenge. I don't see one on their schedule
- 17:08that's going to do anything until they start
- 17:11to get into some of these. deeper playoff games,
- 17:14maybe even a Super Bowl potentially on the other
- 17:16side. I think they've got it. Devontae Adams,
- 17:19one of the best wide receivers, a little bit
- 17:21biased, but you look at what he does, what he
- 17:23did in that game, it was child's play. He just
- 17:26opens his arms and he's catching two touchdowns.
- 17:29It's absolutely unbelievable. It doesn't matter
- 17:32who's out there for them, who's injured. They
- 17:34have it working. Their coach, their culture,
- 17:36all these guys come around each other, and that
- 17:39defense is built with a bunch of dogs. It doesn't
- 17:41matter who. on the other side, they're getting
- 17:43after you, and they're going to make you look
- 17:45like it's JV High School compared to real men
- 17:47playing out there. Remarkable. Excellent take
- 17:50there, Justin. Yeah, the Rams just came out.
- 17:54I really liked the Devontae's little fade pass
- 17:57that he had. He even didn't have the leverage
- 18:00on the receiver. The guy was totally playing
- 18:02the outside, too. And that just shows his skill
- 18:05set of that release off the line. And then Saffer
- 18:09poured absolutely in a pert. I mean, he could
- 18:11have walked over there and said it any better
- 18:13than that. So, Buccaneers. A little missing Bucky
- 18:17Irvin, you feel? A little running games, a little
- 18:19slower. Maybe Evans' loss is still really some.
- 18:27I thought their defense tried to play okay, but
- 18:31I think they were overmatched, and then they
- 18:33got behind after that pick six, like you said,
- 18:35and then the momentum changed, and then I felt
- 18:37like Baker had to do everything. They didn't
- 18:41have enough. And that defensive line for the
- 18:43Rams, especially that front four when they know
- 18:45they're passing, they're tough. So who's that
- 18:49white guy, 55, Fitzgerald or something like that?
- 18:53Fisker. Fisker, whatever. Yeah, yeah. And he
- 18:56was really good against the run, too. That was
- 18:57really impressive because they didn't get – Tampa
- 18:59Bay got nothing going on the running game to
- 19:01start. But where does that put the old – teams
- 19:07on that so the buccaneers they fall to six and
- 19:10five and the rams are at nine and two with the
- 19:13best record in the nfc the best record in the
- 19:15nfc You're hearing it right here on Gridiron
- 19:19Updates. Yeah, I forgot to mention our co -host
- 19:22is out this weekend. We are having some snow
- 19:25outside, so he decided to make some snow angels
- 19:27in some parking lots. I think his boss also called
- 19:31him into work. Yeah, that's true. Thanks for
- 19:34Justin and Jacob. We miss you, Smelty. We miss
- 19:37you. We should be live right now so you can hear
- 19:39us. And then the Rams, look, they got Panthers,
- 19:42Cardinals, Lions, Seattle, Falcons, Cardinals.
- 19:45I mean, maybe a loss from the Lions in there
- 19:49or Seattle. But other than that, where would
- 19:52that put them at? Let's say they just lose two.
- 19:56Where were they overall? So 13 -4. Yeah. I mean,
- 20:01that's sounding one seed to me for sure. Yeah.
- 20:04So it'll be interesting how they play out. Like
- 20:06you were talking about right now, I feel like
- 20:09the only thing that's going to stop the Rams
- 20:10is themselves right now. We get a couple fumbles
- 20:13out of Williams. Stafford starts throwing in
- 20:16tighter spots. But, man, that guy still has got
- 20:19a gun. Yeah. And he's fun to watch. I kind of
- 20:22like to cheer him, even when he was with the
- 20:23Lions. I mean, he's kind of that. That dude,
- 20:26he's a real football player. No flops out of
- 20:29him. He'll get up and yell in your face. Yeah.
- 20:33Big win for the Rams. Really said in the statement,
- 20:35like Justin said, is probably the NFC championship,
- 20:39one of the contenders right now. So that will
- 20:43finish up our five -game recap. We've got some
- 20:47news coming up on some other episodes, and we've
- 20:49got next week's game. So slide over on our YouTube.
