Latest / Revolution of Purpose Podcast / ROP Solo Episode 34 Unfamiliar Doesn't Mean Wrong
Transcript
- 0:00What if the reason your next level feels uncomfortable isn't
- 0:04because something is wrong? What if it's uncomfortable simply
- 0:08because you've never been this version of yourself before? I think
- 0:12sometimes we make a huge mistake. We confuse unfamiliar with
- 0:17unsafe. We confuse uncomfortable with unaligned.
- 0:21And because something doesn't feel natural yet, we assume
- 0:25that we must be going in the wrong direction. But what if the opposite is
- 0:28true? What if the discomfort that you're experiencing isn't
- 0:32always a signal of going backwards?
- 0:34Sometimes it's simply the sensation of
- 0:38expansion. That's what we're going to talk about here today,
- 0:42because your next level probably isn't going to feel natural when you
- 0:46first get there, and it's not supposed to. Welcome to
- 0:50the Revolution of Purpose podcast. I'm your host, John Street, and each week
- 0:54we bring you conversations with thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and individuals
- 0:58who have aligned their life with purpose and created
- 1:02extraordinary resilience. So I'm going to live through it and accept it radically with grace
- 1:06and hope and love. I mean, I would be proud to be in this council.
- 1:10It was an honor. I had so much fun. Tune in every Monday for the
- 1:13Revolution of Purpose solo show and every Thursday for Revolution of Purpose
- 1:17Conversations. Welcome back to the Revolution of Purpose podcast.
- 1:21I'm John Streit, and this is the place where we talk about purpose,
- 1:24mindset, identity, and becoming the person capable
- 1:28of creating the extraordinary life that you were designed to
- 1:32live. Today, I want to talk about something that I think
- 1:35we misunderstand about growth. We expect
- 1:39growth to feel good. We expect alignment to feel peaceful
- 1:43and calm. We expect that when we finally start moving
- 1:47toward the life that we really want, something inside
- 1:51us is going to say, yes, this is it. And this feels completely natural.
- 1:55But very often, my friends, It doesn't go that way.
- 1:58You see, sometimes growth just feels awkward.
- 2:02Sometimes success feels uncomfortable. Shifting the paradigm
- 2:06of thinking that you've had so many times for years and years and years is
- 2:10going to feel almost wrong at first.
- 2:13Sometimes that opportunity that you prayed for shows up and suddenly you just
- 2:17get terrified. Sometimes fear just comes over you
- 2:22and you finally get into the room you wanted to be in, but part of
- 2:25you starts wondering if you belong there at all. Sometimes you start
- 2:28to make more money. You get the bigger client. You step
- 2:31onto the bigger stage. You enter into that healthy relationship
- 2:36and establish the boundaries. You start behaving like the person that you said you wanted
- 2:40to become. And then something inside of you starts screaming,
- 2:43wait a minute, I don't recognize this. We don't do this.
- 2:47This is not who I am. And that's where a lot of people start
- 2:52to retreat, not because the new life is wrong and not because the
- 2:56new life isn't what they desired. But just because it's the
- 2:59old life that felt familiar. I love the way
- 3:03Bob Proctor used to talk about making a decision as crushing through
- 3:07a terror barrier. You see, every time you make a decision, you make
- 3:12it twice. You make it when you decide you're going to do the
- 3:15thing, when you make that decision, and then you make it the second time when
- 3:19you actually put the action behind
- 3:23that decision. And that's when you have to bust through the fear. That's when you
- 3:26have to push through that terror barrier that is within your
- 3:30own mind. I want you to really hear this.
- 3:34Familiar does not necessarily mean right,
- 3:38and unfamiliar does not necessarily mean wrong.
- 3:42We are creatures of habit. We are creatures of familiarity.
- 3:45We, we create our patterns. We develop expectations
- 3:49about ourselves and about our life. And then over time,
- 3:53those expectations become part of our self-image.
- 3:57Our self-image becomes almost like an internal thermostat.
- 4:00It establishes what feels normal for us.
- 4:04How successful you are, how visible you allow yourself
- 4:08to become, how much money feels normal for you,
- 4:11how you expect other people to treat you, how confidently
- 4:15you speak, the opportunities that you believe belong
- 4:18to you and belong to people like you. Even how much joy
- 4:22you allow yourself to experience. And when you start moving beyond
- 4:27that established normal, your internal thermostat can start
- 4:31trying to pull you back, not because the old normal was better,
- 4:36but simply because you knew it. You recognize how it
- 4:39felt to live that old normal. And I think this is where we
- 4:44sometimes misinterpret what we're feeling. We think
- 4:47This feels uncomfortable, so I probably shouldn't
- 4:51do it. Or this feels scary, so maybe that's telling me
- 4:54I'm not ready. Or this just doesn't feel natural,
- 4:58so maybe this isn't really me. But hold on a minute.
- 5:01Of course it doesn't feel natural yet. You've not been that person
- 5:05before. You haven't normalized this new way of living before.
- 5:09You haven't normalized what it means to start achieving your
- 5:12goals before at this level. You know, you can think about
- 5:16it like learning to drive a car. When you first started driving, you were conscious
- 5:21of everything. You know, where are my hands? Are they at 10
- 5:25and 2? You know, where is the brake? How close am I
- 5:28to that other car in front of me? Am I inside the lines?
- 5:31What speed am I going? You know, check the mirror, check the
- 5:35other mirror, check the blind spot. Everything required conscious
- 5:40thought. And granted, driving a car should still require conscious
- 5:43thought, but the more you drive somewhere, now the
- 5:48more you can do it unconsciously. The more you, you barely even
- 5:52remember the portions of the drive. And what changed? What changed
- 5:56is the act of driving became familiar. And identity
- 6:00works in a similar way. At first, that new behavior,
- 6:04it just requires a lot of intention. It requires a lot of focus.
- 6:08You have to consciously choose your decisions. You have to practice
- 6:13becoming that new person until eventually what once
- 6:17required courage becomes normal. You know, there's an idea
- 6:21in Zen Buddhism called shoshin. It's often translated
- 6:25as beginner's mind, and it is the willingness to
- 6:28approach something with openness without demanding that you already
- 6:32know everything. And I love that idea when we talk about
- 6:36personal growth, because when you move into a new level of your life,
- 6:40you are in some ways a beginner yet again. And Lord,
- 6:44don't we hate that? You know, don't we hate that feeling of
- 6:48incompetence? You know, that feeling of uncertainty,
- 6:51that feeling of not knowing exactly what we're doing.
- 6:55I mean, it's natural to want a map, you know, and preferably
- 6:59we don't just want a map. We want turn-by-turn directions
- 7:03like a cosmic GPS telling us exactly what
- 7:07we need to do, when we need to do it, and what our estimated arrival
- 7:11time is at this next level of identity that we're working toward. But my friends,
- 7:15our next level often does not come with that. The person building
- 7:19their first million-dollar business has never been that person running a multimillion-dollar
- 7:24business before. The person stepping onto the bigger stage of the career
- 7:27has never stood in that particular stage before. The person finally
- 7:31establishing healthy boundaries may have never experienced
- 7:36what it feels like to protect their own peace. The person creating
- 7:40a healthy relationship may never discover that healthy
- 7:43love actually feels strange when chaos is
- 7:48what you've always, always known. You're a beginner,
- 7:51and being a beginner doesn't mean that you don't belong there. It just
- 7:55means that you're learning how to live in this new
- 8:00life. So maybe instead of saying, I should know how to do this already.
- 8:04Give yourself some grace and instead say, I've never been here before,
- 8:08so of course I'm learning. There is tremendous freedom
- 8:12in giving you that grace to be learning. Please pardon this
- 8:16interruption to your podcast episode. This will not take but a minute. Before we continue,
- 8:19I want to ask you something. Do you know that you're capable of more,
- 8:23but your life right now just isn't fully reflecting the person
- 8:27you know you can become? Then I want to personally invite you to schedule a
- 8:31Shift Mindset call with me. This Shift Mindset experience is
- 8:35something that I created to help you identify one decision that you can make
- 8:39that will shift your life. And when I say that this is a call with
- 8:43me, I mean exactly that. This is a live one-on-one personal
- 8:47call between you and I. This is not prerecorded. This is
- 8:52not a member of my team. It is you and I having a real coaching
- 8:54conversation about your life, and it does not cost
- 8:58you any money. It is a 45-minute exchange of time. I'll give you
- 9:0230 minutes of my best mindset coaching to help you identify a decision that
- 9:06will create a real shift in your life. And in exchange, I just ask that
- 9:10you give me about 15 minutes to show you the coaching experiences that I offer.
- 9:14There's no obligation, but there is an opportunity to create a meaningful
- 9:18shift in your life just from this call. You can schedule yours today
- 9:22at johnstreet.org. Just click on the button that says
- 9:25schedule your shift call. And also, if this podcast
- 9:29is helping you, please subscribe, please like, and please
- 9:32share it. Every time you do that, every time you engage, you are helping to
- 9:37spread this message and inspire someone else to create their best life
- 9:41through also living their own revolution of purpose. Now let's
- 9:45get you back to the Revolution of Purpose podcast. There's another Eastern
- 9:49idea that I've been thinking a lot about lately too that comes from Taoism,
- 9:53and it's called Wu Wei. It's sometimes translated as
- 9:56non-action, but that can be misleading because it
- 10:00doesn't mean that we're just sitting on the couch doing nothing and waiting
- 10:04for the universe to deliver everything that you want. Wu Wei is
- 10:08closer to non-forced action, action that
- 10:12moves from the flow rather than constantly trying to force
- 10:16and control everything. And I think that distinction
- 10:19is incredibly important because when we enter unfamiliar
- 10:23territory, one of our first instincts is often
- 10:27to try to control it. I don't know what's going to happen,
- 10:31so I have to figure it all out right now. I need to make this
- 10:34work. I need to know exactly how this is going to happen. And then suddenly
- 10:38we're gripping the steering wheel of life so tightly that
- 10:42our knuckles are turning white. But alignment does not mean inactivity.
- 10:47It means taking the action that is yours to take.
- 10:50If you've ever studied the Enneagram, I'm personally an Enneagram 2.
- 10:55That's the helper. And one of the questions that I always ask myself
- 10:59as an Enneagram 2 is, is this action mine to
- 11:03do? Is this mine to take? And that's important because as a helper,
- 11:07I just naturally want to jump in and do everything. And oftentimes, sometimes I'm
- 11:11doing that without the proper boundaries, without the proper protection of
- 11:15my own peace and my own energy. Well, the same thing
- 11:19can be talked about with this very principle.
- 11:23Is this action yours to take without believing that you
- 11:27have to control every outcome? I've been using a phrase
- 11:30lately that I love. My responsibility is the aligned action.
- 11:35I don't have to control the outcome. Let me say that
- 11:38for you again. My responsibility is the aligned
- 11:43action. I don't have to control the outcome.
- 11:46Interestingly, you find a similar principle in Western
- 11:50philosophy as well. The Stoic philosopher Epictetus taught
- 11:54that some things are within our control and other things
- 11:58are not. My choices, those are mine. My responses,
- 12:02those are mine. My effort, Those are mine. The next
- 12:06action I take, that is mine. But whether every person says
- 12:10yes, not mine. Whether everything happens according
- 12:14to my preferred timeline is not mine either.
- 12:17Whether every opportunity produces exactly the outcome that I
- 12:21imagine, that is not mine. And how much unnecessary
- 12:25suffering do we create because we take responsibility not
- 12:30only for our actions, but also for the controlling result? We try
- 12:34to do both parts of this, and then we wonder why we're so exhausted.
- 12:39My friends, we cannot control what other people think of
- 12:43us. We cannot control how they perceive us. And that's okay.
- 12:47We take the aligned action, and then we can let go of that part
- 12:51of the outcome. There's a difference between intentional action and desperate
- 12:56action. You can make the same phone call from 2 completely
- 13:00different identities. You know, especially if you're someone who finds yourself
- 13:04in sales, you, you can make the call and say, I have to make
- 13:08this happen. Or you can make the call and say, this is the next right
- 13:11action for me to take, and I'm going to take it. And then I'm going
- 13:15to release what happens next. It's the same phone call,
- 13:19but it's a different identity. And more importantly, it is a different energy.
- 13:24One is force and the other is flow. And this
- 13:27idea isn't foreign to my own Christian faith either.
- 13:31There is a scripture many of us have heard hundreds of times.
- 13:34In Proverbs, it says, trust in the Lord with all your heart
- 13:38and lean not on your own understanding. And lately I've thought
- 13:42differently about the word understanding because where is our
- 13:46understanding built from? Primarily what we already
- 13:50know, right? Like it's built from what we've experienced and seen and
- 13:54where we've been and who we see ourselves to be. So what
- 13:58happens then when God is leading you somewhere you've never
- 14:02understood before because you've never been there before? Your existing
- 14:06understanding may not contain a map for this
- 14:10new place. Faith does not mean abandoning wisdom. It doesn't mean
- 14:14abandoning reason. You don't have to check your brain at the door, and it certainly
- 14:18doesn't mean sitting around and just doing nothing.
- 14:21Faith means I don't have to understand the entire path
- 14:25before I'm willing to take the next right step.
- 14:28Sometimes my understanding can only describe where I've already
- 14:32been. Faith allows me to walk somewhere that I have not
- 14:35yet been before. And I find it fascinating that
- 14:39across traditions, there are very different human
- 14:44beings that have wrestled with the same fundamental tension, even though they
- 14:48could be worlds apart. Like Zen says, remain open enough to
- 14:52be a beginner. Taoism says, act without constantly forcing.
- 14:56Stoicism says, distinguish what is yours to control from
- 15:00what isn't. And Christian faith says, trust even when I
- 15:04cannot see or understand the entire path. All of
- 15:09these philosophies and these faith traditions are not all saying
- 15:12the same thing, but I think that each one gives us a lens through
- 15:16which to understand something important about growth,
- 15:20that we can move into the unknown without having to
- 15:23control the unknown. And this brings me back to something
- 15:27that you've heard me say many times on this podcast. You know, I'm not
- 15:31a fan of the saying, fake it till you make it.
- 15:34I believe in be it and you will see it.
- 15:37But we tend to get that backwards. We say, once I
- 15:41see the evidence, then I'll believe I'm successful. Once I get that
- 15:45opportunity, then I'll see myself as capable. Once I have the money,
- 15:48then I'll think in abundance. Once people like me,
- 15:52then I'll feel confident. Once I know that this is going
- 15:56to work, then I'll take the action. But transformation usually asks
- 16:00us to reverse that. You have to begin becoming
- 16:03the person before your external evidence fully arrives.
- 16:08And that's why identity transformation matters so much.
- 16:12I teach a process called the Law of Identity
- 16:15Transformation. And if you've watched this podcast lately, you've,
- 16:18you've heard this in great detail. And I teach about awaken,
- 16:22Become, align, and create.
- 16:25That is the law of identity transformation. And that is something that is
- 16:29always working. We are always living this momentum
- 16:32spiral where we are awakening to these possibilities of
- 16:36what could happen, of what could happen if we're trusting God,
- 16:40trusting the universe, trusting our higher power to work things together
- 16:44for our good. And then that gives us some confidence to believe, to become
- 16:48the identity that we have to have to live our next goal.
- 16:51And so then out of that identity, then we take a line aligned steps.
- 16:55We start to act in alignment and take the decisions that need
- 16:59to be made. And then that causes us to create more and more of
- 17:03the life that we desire to have, those, those goals that we've been setting.
- 17:07And so then the more we create it, the more we start to awaken
- 17:11further that it really is possible. It becomes an
- 17:15evidence. The aligned action creates the evidence that makes us
- 17:19awaken further that we can be more and more of that identity. And then we
- 17:22take more and more of aligned action and the momentum spiral continues
- 17:26to grow. We become the person that is holding the vision
- 17:29and we take aligned actions, the decisions that we need
- 17:33to show that person. And then we're creating from that
- 17:36place of identity. But notice something. There is
- 17:39a period between becoming and creating where the outside
- 17:43world may not have caught up yet. And my friends, that's where this
- 17:47uncomfortable part exists. You're behaving differently,
- 17:51but the evidence isn't all there yet. You're thinking differently,
- 17:55but the results aren't all there yet. You've stopped being that old version
- 18:00of yourself, but the people around you don't recognize this new version.
- 18:03So they're not even completely comfortable with you
- 18:07yet, much less you being comfortable with yourself. And it can be extremely
- 18:11uncomfortable, but that uncomfortability does not mean that
- 18:15you're failing. It just means that you're transforming.
- 18:19And transforming is what your goal is, constantly being
- 18:23evolving to that higher version of yourself who's living the life
- 18:27that you so desperately desire to live. Now, I want to
- 18:31make an important distinction here. Not every uncomfortable situation
- 18:35is growth. So please don't misunderstand that. Sometimes discomfort
- 18:39is information. Sometimes it is caution. Your intuition
- 18:43may be telling you something, and sometimes something really is wrong.
- 18:47But wisdom comes in where you learn to discern the difference and
- 18:50you trust your gut. You know, you trust that inner voice
- 18:54that says, hold up, this is something that you might want to reconsider.
- 18:58This is something that you need to sit with before you move forward. I just
- 19:02want to make sure you know, though, that we can't automatically assume I'm uncomfortable,
- 19:05therefore I'm unaligned, because sometimes you're uncomfortable because
- 19:09you're finally aligned with something that is bigger than the identity
- 19:13that you've been living from. So ask yourself in that situation,
- 19:17is this discomfort telling me that something is wrong,
- 19:20or is this simply unfamiliar Because I've never been
- 19:23this version of myself before. That is a very
- 19:27different question. So let me leave you with this today.
- 19:31Where in your life have you been interpreting unfamiliarity
- 19:35as evidence that you should go backwards? Where have you been asking
- 19:39for expansion and then become so frightened when expansion
- 19:43starts to show up that you actually went back? Like,
- 19:46where have you said, I want more, And then when more arrived,
- 19:50you thought, this is not right. This doesn't feel like me. My friends, it won't
- 19:54feel like you. Not yet. Your next level may not feel like home
- 19:58when you first arrive, but stay there. Sit there.
- 20:01Learn. Remain open and take the next aligned
- 20:05action. Stop demanding that you understand every single step
- 20:09and stop trying to control every outcome. Give yourself
- 20:14permission to be a beginner and keep becoming.
- 20:17Because eventually the thing that once terrified you becomes
- 20:21something that you do without thinking, like breathing,
- 20:25like drinking water, like brushing your teeth. And the room
- 20:28where you once wondered whether you belonged or not becomes a room that
- 20:32you know how to walk into with confidence and your head held
- 20:36high. The opportunity that once intimidated you
- 20:40will become your new standard. And the identity that
- 20:44you once had to consciously practice becomes simply who
- 20:47you are. And then you start taking those aligned actions from
- 20:51that new identity. The life that once felt unfamiliar becomes
- 20:55the life that you now can't imagine not living. That is what it
- 20:58means to become. And remember, be it
- 21:02and you will see it. Thank you so much for spending this time with me
- 21:05today on the Revolution of Purpose podcast. If something
- 21:09in this episode spoke to you, please share it with somebody who is stepping

- 21:17that they wanted so badly feels so uncomfortable. Maybe they
- 21:21just needed the reminder that unfamiliar does not necessarily
- 21:25mean wrong. Until next time, keep awakening,
- 21:28keep becoming, keep taking those aligned actions, and keep creating
- 21:32the extraordinary life that you were designed to live.
