- 2:00Thanks for returning my call. Yeah yeah, listen, captain, I
- 2:06need your help. Can you get a plane down here for me? The
- 2:08one we brought has been wrecked? And if how were you, I'd come
- 2:12along with it. A nice chance to add to your laurels, Captain by
- 2:15making a couple of arrests. Yeah, one of them. Kill it to
- 2:27night and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man
- 2:31with the Action Pact. Expense account America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigators, Yours truly,
- 2:38Johnny from Special Investigator Johnny doll a location San Juan del Peril. The
- 2:54Universal Adjustment UROL Hertford, Connecticut. Following is a final accounting of expense isn't
- 3:00report on my investigation of the Sea Legs Matter? Expense account out of eighteen
- 3:07one dollar American phone call to Captain Jose Ramrige to the Federal Maritime I still
- 3:12can't spell it, call it the Coast Guard. But a lot of things
- 3:15happened before I could make that call, Like the fast plane trip that we
- 3:19made the San Juan del Peril, and the hope of finding the yacht the
- 3:21Sea Legs despite a big insurance plane based on its alleged loss at sea,
- 3:25Like the fact that our plane was wrecked for us by one Douglas Landfaerd.
- 3:29It's quite a big claim based on his alleged death at sea. Like our
- 3:32discovery of the yacht carefully altered and repainted in an old shipyard. Our discovery
- 3:38of Raymond Gonzales, a member of the crew who was supposed to have gone
- 3:40down with it. Oh, no, asking, not until I revived his
- 3:46Gonzales character and make him talk well well, Hanny Landsley John, not particularly
- 4:04I want her to take no. I guess you wouldn't. So you found
- 4:09the Sea Legs, did you ask your help? You? Oh, then
- 4:14you're familiar with Oscar Patrick Vladimir Pascuaro. Ask him the chiling money? Is
- 4:18that? Please? Please? How did you say such a thing about that?
- 4:21Just shut up? Thank you? Nice job you did it. Disguising
- 4:26the Sea Legs, missus landthare I Oscar hadn't shown me where to find is
- 4:30my Asben, I would have it out to sea again and you close on
- 4:32the new phone. Yeah. Sure, one of the oldest games in the
- 4:34business. And in the meantime you would have collected one hundred and fifty thousand
- 4:38dollars on a supposed loss, in addition to a quarter million on your husband,
- 4:42Douglas. Why did you have to come along, John, I'm afraid
- 4:46you asked for it when you fired your claims four hundred thousand dollars. We
- 4:50had to we were in trouble. Oh sure, because you spent every nickolouse
- 4:54you can get your hands on. No, you inherited the estate. I
- 4:58told that just two Well, that ain't the way I heard it, and
- 5:01I don't intend to believe it any more than I believe a couple of things
- 5:04you told me on the plane down. If you don't understand, nobody has
- 5:08to lie. Remember how you're sobbed as you told about the last radio contact
- 5:12with your husband, when, as you put it, you could hear the
- 5:15rocks grinding away at the hall and the water pouring in overside as he desperately
- 5:18fought for his Well, I heard it a little different for Loscar The radio
- 5:23signal was suddenly cut off. That's all, no fancy sound effects, nothing
- 5:28oscar and what rocks by the way that smashed the sea legs. I flew
- 5:32out to the Baldero Islands and tried to find them. They were as non
- 5:36existent as the records that should have washed the shore on the Baldero current.
- 5:40I'm beginning to see some things. John the mate or skipper or whatever you
- 5:44want to call him, who was supposed to have been with your husband,
- 5:46has been lost with a bold room on Gonzales. Well, as you can
- 5:48see, he wasn't quick enough when he attacked us here a minute ago,
- 5:50and I had a little rough with him. Yes, you are having a
- 5:54gun pointing him my back stopped kidding Connie, you know more. You were
- 6:05too good for him. A lot of help you were that his knife.
- 6:10Yes, I think i'd better have an oscar because I see Connie Lantern made
- 6:16a hasty exit from this. But what do you know about that? You
- 6:21didn't see her leave. Well, it's so dark in this whole shipyard,
- 6:26and I was so worried about your should be plenty were you look? I
- 6:31didn't get out. I needed only two things when I came down here,
- 6:34asking proofs. Both of oh, I don't get out of this dreary place
- 6:39with the talk. There's shut up and listen. I found them both now,
- 6:45proof that Douglas Lantern never died in the wreck of the Sea Legs,
- 6:47and proof that the Sea Legs was never wrecked at all. Except for a
- 6:50couple of details, the case is closed. One of those details is you
- 6:55me? Oh, you mean pain for all the unvaluable or help? It's
- 7:00awful nice, I ask her. I'm going to lay the cards right on
- 7:03the table, and the money I'll find it. Connie Landfair slipped away during
- 7:10our little rockets year, but you could have stopped her as easily as you
- 7:14could have stopped this Gonzales character from jumping. She she said she had a
- 7:17gun bluff She didn't, But you did. Oh, mister, I spirted
- 7:23that balls under your left arm the minute you appeared in my hotel room that
- 7:26first morning. Well, don't reach for it, because I'm carrying one too,
- 7:29mister doll I did. I don't understand what I do now. I've
- 7:33wanted from the beginning just why you insisted on sticking so close to me from
- 7:36the minute I arrived here Inagua. All right, I will tell you the
- 7:43true, the whole truth, even if it costs me a small slight percentage
- 7:48of the niches and peas you're going to anybody unesteemable assistance I have been giving
- 7:54you. Ask her. You just won't give up with the money. That's
- 7:58what it is, the money like I get from all the Americans who Nicaragua,
- 8:03only from you. It was not precise in guiding what for all the
- 8:07hell like, for instance, the money you've been getting from the landfairs.
- 8:11I cannot tell a lie, mister Dollar. I did get some money from
- 8:15mister and missus Lander, you know, for various and Sunday services when Thursday
- 8:18came here, but by not including the s you see, if I hadn't
- 8:24known they would pay you well for the using of my radio license, my
- 8:28license training because license, I would never have been able to know about the
- 8:33that didn't happen. And so skillfully leads you to the Bodala Islands on all
- 8:37the clues that that I you know what I mean, What you really mean,
- 8:43Oscar, is that you expected a lot more from them if they're crazy
- 8:46planning I collect on the insurance policies worked out sure, Because no, no,
- 8:50mister Dollar, no, I was only trying to help you think,
- 8:54mister Dollar, about all the things are told about, you were careful not
- 8:58to tell me a single thing that I wouldn't have learned anyway. Why did
- 9:03you insist right off the bat that we fly to Portagardo, for instance?
- 9:05Why apparently they helped me for a small pittance, of course, but actually
- 9:09it was to keep me out of the way while Constant Landfair made contact with
- 9:13her husband here in San Juan del Para. No doubt you worked that all
- 9:16out with her before you busted in on me that first morning. Then when
- 9:20we did get to Porto Gardo, trying to prevent me from spotting the current
- 9:24would have taken any wreckage from the islands and washed it the shore on the
- 9:26sand bar of Porto Gardo if the sea legs had gone down. No,
- 9:31no noise, I told you about that strong Sure you did, but only
- 9:37because you realized at that point that I couldn't help finding out about it.
- 9:39Anyway. You're making a crook out there, making a crook of you.
- 9:43Well, I have this little item oscar. When we started to land our
- 9:48plane and Douglas Landfair came at us with his car, you know as well,
- 9:50as I do, that you could have avoided it kept us from stamping
- 9:52off our landing gear and crash. Oh it was nicely done too, so
- 9:56that you wouldn't get badly hurt, but still be up and around to collect
- 9:58from life. Therefore, oh, oh, miss about, how can you
- 10:03even impdicate such a horrible thing? Do my view my own dying because of
- 10:09your little suggestion along the way that I unfastened my seatbelt and relax while you
- 10:13I noticed that yours tight one thing after another, And finally, of course,
- 10:18armed as you are, you not only let Gonzales attack me, but
- 10:22you let Conny land for escape as well. And awful money, money,
- 10:26that's all you've talked about? How did you figure the collect for all this?
- 10:33All? Right, It's true, It's true. All my life,
- 10:39in every continuable life, and whatever I have done has been because I love
- 10:45money. But I swear, mister, I would have never let them killed
- 10:50because I do like I almost even that all the money I could get from
- 10:58them ill or whatever you could get from me. Yes, and because of
- 11:07such a nice man, I guess I'm not used to being around nice missus.
- 11:18Glent, don't be too hard on her. It was all his doings.
- 11:24He had such a stronghold over her, the way he teted her.
- 11:28Sometimes I almost thought she wished she had gone down in the wreck of the
- 11:31book. What are you talking about? She's stone because by now she's so
- 11:35far and she has just don't you see? Yeah, I suppose that does
- 11:39make sense? All right? What else? That's all? I opened up
- 11:46my whole entire heart. Well, mister, for once in my life I'm
- 11:56telling me to do. I thought maybe I could sweed you to pay more
- 12:03than they could. Then I could be on your side, on the good
- 12:07side just a while. But no, and I guess I can only dig
- 12:15for one thing I haven't told me why, Douglas Landfair is you must know?
- 12:20Or do you? Yes? Well, for maybe enough of a small
- 12:26kittens to get out of this country get over it can but you have much
- 12:30of a choice this time. You will help me, maybe just a little
- 12:33bit, if I tell I'm leaving my hope, mister dollars. So I
- 12:37will tell you, mister land giving, mister land Fairy is right here.
- 12:41And when I am oscar ready to blow your brains out of what you just
- 12:43all this know the insurance and back together care please he has again. Yeah,
- 12:50I see so if you ask her, yes, yes, I have
- 12:54careful Oscar. And if it is the last thing I do with a man
- 12:58who got me into this is quite don't out. So it was after that
- 13:13I call Captain Ramirez, the Federal Mari teammates, and that's something I'll want
- 13:18that worked and let him take charge. Extradition proceedings for Connie are underway.
- 13:24The US courts will have to take over with her and doug Landfair's body is
- 13:28being shipped to the States. Oscar his body, well, I left some
- 13:33money with Captain Ramirez for a decent burial expense account total eighty five cents.
- 13:41Remarks. I wonder what kind of a deal Oscar Patrick Vladimir Pascarol was able
- 13:45to make at the Pearly Gates or wherever he was headed. And you know
- 13:50something, I kind of hope it was a pretty well, at least I
- 13:54hope it wasn't too bad at deal. Yours truly, Johnny Dollitt. Next
- 14:09week, the promise of romance in the arms of a lovely girl and the
- 14:15thread of a knife in the back join us, won't you, yours?
- 14:20Truly? Johnny Dollar, Yours Truly. Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey,
- 14:45is transcribed in Hollywood. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who
- 14:50also wrote this week's story. Heard in our cast were Harry Bartel, Lawrence
- 14:56Dubkin, Virginia Gregg Harley, bear Don Diamond, and Russell Thorson. Musical
- 15:01supervision by Amerigo Marino. Johnny Dollar has come to you through the worldwide facilities
- 15:13of the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Welcome Back. Well
- 16:40a very interesting episode conclusion, and many fans waited a very long time to
- 16:45find out what happened, to find out about Oscar's role and really kind of
- 16:52zoom in on the character. I thought it was actually pretty well done.
- 16:56While we don't know who played which part for sure, based on the just
- 17:02listing of characters, I'm betting that Laurence Dopkin played Oscar because Dopkin always did
- 17:10very well with those very rich character roles. We've heard him as Archie Goodwinning.
- 17:15Later on, we'll hear him in the role of Ellery Queen. But
- 17:22those really fantastic character roles of what I remember Dopkin for the most, I
- 17:29will say that I did read on a forum that had the post from when
- 17:34it was uncovered. Someone criticized the ending as anti climactic. I didn't see
- 17:38it that way. I thought this was a good serial, and I'm glad
- 17:42we've got it in the Johnny Dollar cannon. Well, we're going to turn
- 17:48now to another series. This one is called Manhunt. Manhunt was produced by
- 17:55Frederick Ziff. ZIV was the king a first run send cation program on radio
- 18:02and television. Ziv was the producer behind such radio series as Boston Blackie,
- 18:08I was a Communist for the FBI, Freedom USA, Bright Star, and
- 18:15File Events. He also continued it on television. His ZIB Productions produced programs
- 18:22such as a lot of the old radio stars actually Boston Blackie TV show,
- 18:27District Attorney TV show, Bee Cordless Archer television show. All were produced by
- 18:33Frederick Ziv, as well as one of my favorite crime dramas, lock Up,
- 18:38and others will remember Highway Patrol. And the most famous television program that
- 18:45ZIB produced was probably on Land Three Lives, that great anti communist show of
- 18:52the early fifties. First run syndication was really big and with so many networks
- 19:00up or selling spots to companies like rexol or Campbell or Johnson's Wax or the
- 19:07Craft Cheese Company. These syndicated shows allowed local sponsors to be able to enjoy
- 19:15that same advantage of sponsoring a radio show that so many national companies enjoyed,
- 19:22and that was Manhunt. Manhunt was a series of fifteen minute programs, and
- 19:26I have to rely on the Digital Deli FTP log information on Manhunt. Manhunt
- 19:34first aired on November twenty seventh of nineteen forty three, as best we can
- 19:40tell, and continued on for at least twenty eight weeks. Whether there was
- 19:47later provinces of the series, we don't know, but twenty eight weeks does
- 19:51appear to be the minimum run of the series. This first episode originally aired
- 19:57on November the twenty seventh of ninet forty three. And the tunnel is the
- 20:02accusing violin. Man, sorry, the accusing violin that led to Manhunt.
- 20:21No crime I've been admitted. Yeah, Oh, murder has been done.
- 20:29Yes, Oh, Manhunt has been done. Yees God, I think you
- 20:41know what you ask positive Haven to be my concert, Danstairs. You meet
- 20:47me right out of the country and I'll go. How can I promise that
- 20:51my wife? You're you mean nothing to Michael. You know that I love
- 20:56you, Michael. She doesn't h remember this. I want you and I
- 21:04can't have you. Maybe she won't have me very well. Maybe. Okay,
- 21:15I've got the conn There's one thing I can do but I thought of
- 21:25before, but this time I'll do it. Just a piece of paper,
- 21:30this type of okay by Michael Allison for reasons that concern no one. I'm
- 21:41about to take my own life. Please forgive me there now, I'm a
- 21:49science yeah, Michael Allison. And no, no, no, I can't
- 21:57do it. I won't. I'm not a cod Who's there? Why?
- 22:04But gun? Why are you pointing at me? No? No, don't
- 22:08come near me? Do stop? Please? Oh. A killer has done
- 22:18his work. A man lies dead, murdered. The police will say it's
- 22:23suicide when they find the notes and the gun that the murder replaced the dead
- 22:27man's hand. Who is to say it is not suicide? Who will find
- 22:33the one flaw? Who will start the man hunts? Man hunt and the
- 22:47accusing violin where hey doesn't have to leave his laboratory. I'm a cuff too,
- 23:00but I take some time off once in a while. Puts it gret
- 23:03that not often go up. I got the whole rest of the day off
- 23:07as soon as I get your report on that violin of suicide last night?
- 23:11Hey, what about it? Okay? From here, everything check on that
- 23:15violin of suicide. The Michael Allison says, technically is there? He goes
- 23:18with his Technicalli, wait a minute, Drew, don't get any ideas about
- 23:22the Allison case. It's the most obvious suicide I ever came across. It's
- 23:26obvious, all right. I have just said, find nothing we didn't expect
- 23:30Carl Burns, indicating the gun was held close to the head, no finger
- 23:33prints except the dead man's. Then the bullet came from the gun we found
- 23:37in his hand. Signature on the suicide note, McCoy definitely he signed it.
- 23:41Fine, We found the gun in his right hand, the bullet wound
- 23:44in his right temple. Everything else checks. It's suicide, definitely, maybe
- 23:48maybe, says look through forget it. I finally got myself a pat suicide
- 23:53case, complete with note to match, and that's all there is to it.
- 23:56The guy killed himself all right themselves? Why? Why? Yes?
- 24:02How do I know? You tell him? Why? Patty book? You
- 24:07do? It probably was suicide. I don't deny that. But this laboratory
- 24:11of mine contains equipment that can mean life to an innocent man, but that's
- 24:15to a gilly one. I'd like to use it, all right, so
- 24:18you'd like to use it, but not on this case, not anymore.
- 24:22That is, Let's have your report. Yeah, thanks so long? Holo
- 24:29on bell quickly, Hey Bill, Bill Morton, bring my report back at
- 24:36five tonight and I'll sile it. Come on over here, Pat, I
- 24:41gotta hutch look at this. You see Allison silent? See anything unusual about
- 24:52it? But there is something wrong with the Pat. I bet on it
- 24:56all right, So there's something wrong with it. What that had to do
- 24:59with Alice from suicide? I'm not sure it was suicide. I may be
- 25:03later today, but I'm not now. That's why I started Morton until five
- 25:07o'clock. I want to make a couple of calls Allison's widow and Dorothy Barton
- 25:11Gall who heard the shot and notified the police. Do you want me with
- 25:14you? No? Not when I go to see missus Allison. I want
- 25:15you to sneak into the homicide department files and get me all the dope on
- 25:19the Barton gal to meet me in front of a home. I'll pony for
- 25:22the a bliss. I'll do it, dude, if you just tell me
- 25:25what you're driving at. Okay, there's something about this violin that's wrong.
- 25:30What it is? Maybe even when I come back here or no, it
- 25:36may even be that this violin is proof that Michael Allison is murdered. I'm
- 25:45sorry to bother you like this, Missus Allison, but you see I've told
- 25:47everything I had to tell to the police. Mister Stephen, Well, perhaps
- 25:49this gentleman here, Oh, you don't know, mister Conroy. Who is
- 25:52my husband's manager, mister Conray. Mister Conroy, when did you last see
- 26:00mister Allison Conroy bye? Last night before he left for the there what's the
- 26:04meaning of this question? Just some private investigating and doing it all for the
- 26:08knowledge of the homicide department, I suppose, well, not exactly. See,
- 26:12I see that it might be a good idea if you're left here at
- 26:15once. We really have nothing to tell you, mister Stephens. Well,
- 26:18let me be the judge of Adam. I won't be a minute, I'll
- 26:19say, you want, I'll call him up right now. I really don't
- 26:23see anything to answer questions you've answered enough questions. This man has no right
- 26:27question ictus, I have the questions. Oh, I want to talk to
- 26:33Protective Sergeant Morton in homicide. Please we'll find out if we have to answer
- 26:37these questions and not Warton speaking Wharton. This is John Conroy, the late
- 26:41Michael Allison's manager. I'm with missus Allison at her home. One of your
- 26:45men, Ruth Stevens this year, and wants to ask us some questions.
- 26:47He is not one of mine. Man, he's from the police. Lamb,
- 26:49Well, do we have to answer his questions? No, he's got
- 26:52more right, he will be there. Let me talk gladly. Did you
- 26:56take this phone, mister Stephens, Okay, give it to me. Hi,
- 27:00Bill, I feel he says, if he didn't stick me with an
- 27:03unsigned report and kept me here at the headquarters for no reason, listen,
- 27:07to get out of there and leave those people alone. Alison committed suicide.
- 27:10I'll commit murder. You don't come right back down here and sign that report.
- 27:14Okay, I'll be back Bill five o'clock. Got an hour yet,
- 27:17you know right, you've got an hour. But get out of there and
- 27:19let those people alone. That's an order. Drow go on feed it.
- 27:22Okay, Bill, don't get upset. I'm going you found out anything yet.
- 27:27It isn't five o'clock yet either. All right, where do you want
- 27:38about ten minutes? I didn't get your message until half hour ago. Look
- 27:42where the Barton girl lives? Yes? Maybe nobody home. Yes, I'm
- 27:56sorry to interrupt you, miss bardon. Oh it's violent. Mean I just
- 27:59turned. I'm Drew Stevens and this is paticial O'Connor in the place the police.
- 28:03May we come in? Yeah, yes, of course, if you'll
- 28:11wait a moment while I put my vale Do you mind look at it?
- 28:14Person? Not at all. I'll be careful about it. Pretty instrum,
- 28:18don't you take? Well? I don't know. They all look like to
- 28:22me, look alike you. I'm just an amateur. And Michael Allison Kenny,
- 28:27he's violin with a living thing kind I've got it. That was the
- 28:38significance of Michael Allison's violin. It's the cloe I needed. What kind of
- 28:42a clue? Did you get that? That? This kind of a cluepead.
- 28:45Michael Allison couldn't have committed suicide. That's the way we found him.
- 28:51He was murdered y'all are all free in the addresing room where we found Alison.
- 28:59Buddy, Yeah, and how you talk me into this? But the
- 29:02three of them are next door. This is Alison, Conroy and Dorothy,
- 29:04but have passed with him too. Who if you made a fool of me
- 29:07getting them all out of there? Of you here, of your bill?
- 29:11You want a murderer to go flee wid you all right? Everybody quiet place.
- 29:22I'm going to try to reenact what happened here last night. Michael Allison
- 29:26was sitting in this chair as I'm sitting in it now. He was responding
- 29:30about something about her, his wife, Joyce Allison. Jesus, something she
- 29:34broke his heart, ruined his my light now. Alison sat here and tiped
- 29:41out a suicide note. He intended to kill himself. Oh, he typed
- 29:45a note like this, finished it, find it and then something changed his
- 29:52mind. Maybe maybe he didn't have time. Maybe it was the opening of
- 29:59the door. Open that door with your head. Allison half turned as I'm
- 30:04doing now, saw someone standing over him with a gun, stood up,
- 30:10but before he could make another move, he was shot. Body slumped to
- 30:12the floor. The murderer bent down, saw the suicide note, wiped off
- 30:15whatever fingerprints were on the gun, washed it into Allison's lifeless hand, and
- 30:19fled. You're conjecture. No one but Allison could have known what happened in
- 30:22this room last night. You're wrong, mister Conroy. That was a witness,
- 30:26Allison's violin. What are you talking about, Drew? I'll plain that
- 30:30later as much I'll tell you now. A new ASCID I developed in my
- 30:33laboratory showed a second set of finger prints underneath Allison's on that gun. Your
- 30:38finger, Prince missus Allison, you murdered your husband. I sure I didn't.
- 30:42I didn't kill it. There were your finger, Prince Missus Allison.
- 30:45I didn't kill him. I can tell him I didn' kill him. John
- 30:47Yellow, I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't kill him,
- 30:51John Conroy, with his idea, Sir, I handed him the gun,
- 30:55but he shot by a husband. I wouldn't move if I were you,
- 31:02Conrad, Stop pretty strength, take them down a book about the charge's murder,
- 31:07prosecuting witness Violin. Don't give me any of that nonsense about a secret
- 31:18acid that brings out hidden think of Prince Drew. You made that up.
- 31:21Now, didn't you. Yes, I dressed that up, but it served
- 31:22its purpose, didn't. But what I want to know is what threw Allison's
- 31:26violin jersey. The strings were on backwards the east ring, the highest one,
- 31:30which belonged on the extreme right, was on the left, and the
- 31:33other strings were reversed too. How did you know the strings were on backwards?
- 31:37I didn't know until I take it with Dorothy Barton violin at the house.
- 31:38Remember well, the Barton violin strings were normal because miss Barton is right
- 31:45handed, saying token, the Allison's violent things were reversed because Allison was left
- 31:49handed. I'm beginning to get it now, Drew. I checked and found
- 31:53that Allison was left handed. Conray and Allison knew it too, of course,
- 31:56but in their hasten excitement into the thought of it, he jumped from
- 32:00a left handed violin into a murder. I don't get it. Simple fact.
- 32:05The gun they killed Alison was they forced into his right hand, met
- 32:07the bullet hole in his right temple. But Allison was left handed. If
- 32:13he had killed himself, he'd killed a gun in his left hand. Oh
- 32:15you like that? The violin really was a witness. It's kind of you
- 32:21recall this part and told us about it. Don't you that Allison's violin lived
- 32:23and breathed and talked, well, it talked his kill us right into our
- 32:29hands. Welcome back. Well, this is a somewhat average cause and it
- 32:49mostly makes sense. The one thing I don't get was the law lawyer trying
- 32:54to frame it as a suicide, as that would kind of go against the
- 33:00insurance angle, which was the whole motive for the crime. But other than
- 33:04that, pretty interesting. The show stars Larry Haynes, and I'll go in
- 33:07into a little bit more about Larry Haynes next week. That will do it
- 33:13for now. We will be back tomorrow with the lineup. Monday, we
- 33:16start again with another episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, and join us
- 33:21back here next Friday for another episode of Manhunt. In the meantime, sendra
