- 0:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Thank you for being with us.
- 0:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, this particular episode, uh, where we're gonna be talking about uh health.
- 0:54Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And as you know, or this is your first uh this is your first show with us, uh, one of the well the the the biggest the biggest parts of the foundation is uh you know mental health, recovery, uh trauma, recovery, you know, from anything.
- 1:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Could be recovery from alcoholism, could be from addictions, other addictions.
- 1:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It could be anything.
- 1:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And we we always have that in the back of uh every show that we have, which is over five hundred and ten at this point.
- 1:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So yeah, we do have five hundred and ten episodes, and we cover again a lot a lot about the the mental health, and while that is always an underpinning of every single show, what I haven't talked about is physical health uh very much, and we're gonna talk about that today.
- 2:13Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: This isn't about you know bodybuilding, winning bodybuilding competitions or anything like that.
- 2:21Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, if if if that happens, you would great, that's awesome.
- 2:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, this is just for you know individuals who uh maybe haven't been to a gym for whatever reason, whether it's you know, the the price tag of the membership, uh being pressured into different sales tactics and uh time, uh maybe the times that you're available to go to the gym, it just has been packed.
- 3:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And and if you're like me, you you like a little bit of space to uh you know to go through whether it's the machines or the the um uh the uh free weights and and that um or the big uh it's almost like uh a gigantic jump rope.
- 3:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so like you're uh you know it it's more for toning, I guess, is what I'm trying to get at.
- 3:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so the last three days, I I did uh actually today just finished up the three-day trial at this uh this gym, this gym.
- 3:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So it's it's close.
- 3:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um they have every everything that I I need.
- 3:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: They got the free weights, they got the machines, they got again those those ropes, uh, you know, the if you know for different boot camps, you know, they have those um, you know, the helps tone and um basketball hoops and uh all kinds of cardio equipment.
- 4:21Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Again, everything that somebody like myself would need.
- 4:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I don't I don't really know exactly how this all came about, but maybe it's the fact that it's summertime uh uh but I decided to to go in and do they had a free again, they have a free day, free day, a three-day uh uh free trial, where again you can go in, utilize the facilities, see if it's for you without having to give them a credit card, without any real questions other than you know, sign this waiver, right?
- 5:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And those are pretty standard.
- 5:14Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um I can tell you now that we're gonna join, I'm gonna join the gym.
- 5:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And again, for me, it's not about I mean I'm 44, yeah, there's there's people much older that you know when these bodybuilding contests and they're uh you know the strong man or strong woman competitions and that like that that that's not like for me.
- 5:55Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh I have focused so much time on the health side.
- 6:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I'm just talking about I focus I focus so much of the health time that I do on me on the mental side, and I've really neglected the like the outside health side, right?
- 6:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so put on some weight, a lot of weight, I guess, uh a lot of sedentary being, um you know, a lot of a lot of sitting, right?
- 6:37Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That's it that's how we get things done, right?
- 6:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We sit at the on the couch, we sit at the uh the kitchen table, we sit in the office, and uh and and so I again I I I did a three-day trial, and and so tomorrow, um I don't know when this episode's gonna exactly air.
- 7:04Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So it might be the tomorrow of when the show airs, uh, when we drop it.
- 7:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I I I I'm not quite sure at this point.
- 7:14Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh I'll figure that out here once once we finish the this particular episode.
- 7:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So we got we got a we got a couple shows that are uh ready to ready to drop.
- 7:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So uh regardless of that, uh I think again for me it's about being or getting more toned.
- 7:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: T-O-N-E-D.
- 7:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So yeah, I use some of the weights, but it's not like when I was in my 20s, where you know, I'm taking all kinds of supplements and this and that, and uh, and I didn't, I mean, I didn't enter any competitions or any shows or anything, but it was it was just a big part of my my life.
- 8:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And then as I was talking to a friend Don, who's at currently at the hospital, uh again, we just uh I was just being there just to sit with them and talk and chat.
- 8:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We were talking about it, and I the time that I remember where I was going to the gym pretty regularly, whether it was four or five days a week uh years ago was after the company I was working for, where they fired or let go, lay off a bunch of people.
- 8:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I kind of constricted spending, even though the gym membership was in thousands and thousands of dollars.
- 9:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But I remember that that was when I was like, oh my gosh, I could be maybe I could be next.
- 9:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: What would happen?
- 9:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like, I I need to make sure that I'm saving what I can, and then from that point on, I just never got back into that mode.
- 9:39Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Not even the not even the supplement type of person and the weightlifting that I was doing, but just going to the gym and just doing again doing some weights, but having them be lighter, higher rep reps.
- 9:57Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So, you know, you maybe do eight or ten or twelve or fifteen or whatever the number is that you you do.
- 10:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Maybe sometimes you do 25 of each.
- 10:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, you know, for like abs in the back and stuff, I usually do a little bit higher reps, so like 20 or 30, uh, as opposed to like some of the other machines.
- 10:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But it was really at that point, many, many, many, many, many, many years ago, that I just it was like went from like one extreme to the other, and then it wasn't until probably 20 maybe 2016 part maybe 2017, joined the gym, uh and I do I just swung I did so this was before I had kind of that that mental health uh valley that I I I went into uh where I wasn't on like weights because I was like, you know, what's the reason?
- 11:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like why why should I, you know, and I don't have I'm not gonna be taking supplements to like you know help me focus and give me extra energy.
- 11:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And and so I I just stopped going.
- 11:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I was swimming there maybe like I don't know, three or four days a week, if that and then canceled that at some point.
- 11:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't I don't even know if I was a member for a year, and so since then the thought of you know joining a gym, right?
- 11:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So some of the gyms are just super packed, you go, and it just like for me, like that doesn't work very well for me.
- 12:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh I like to be able to move around to like whether I'm doing machines or if I'm doing like some cardio, I just like to be able to move, not have to like you know, sit around and wait for like 10 10 minutes or 15 minutes or something, uh to do to do a workout.
- 12:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh so I I like to have a little bit of flexibility and then be able to to move around.
- 12:31Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um and so the interesting part is the last three days for for this trial, uh I haven't had to like write down like what what what exercises and and and what weights and all that.
- 12:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It it's surprising how it comes back or how it came back in my mind of okay, like on this day, whatever, like day one, we're gonna do legs or whatever, what you know, whatever body part or parts, you know, if we're doing chest and back or shoulders or uh my mind like got back very quickly after all these years of like okay and then it felt good just to like get some kind of activity and exercise besides walking Lucy at night and uh for her to go to the bathroom, you know, our our dog or our have a niece and the dog six pounds, four ounces, she may have gained an ounce or two uh off the off the wear.
- 13:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But um I guess missed made a decision that I need to do some kind of you know outward health.
- 14:13Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That like when people hear the word health, it's usually what they think of.
- 14:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: They think of oh uh you know, the legs or the arms or the shoulders or the necks or the abs or uh what what have you.
- 14:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And again, I'm not I'm not gonna go play a sport, I'm not uh not gonna go enter a competition, like a weightlifting competition or anything like that.
- 14:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I'm just doing this for my my health, my outward health.
- 14:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because I've again I've as you know, I've I've spent so much time focusing on, and I'm still continuing to focus on the um the mental health aspects of of health for me, but I'm also now going to be um integrating the outward health, you know, like what you can can see.
- 15:31Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so again, it it for me is just toning and trying to lose a little weight that I've gained over the years of just that sedentary like life that I've had.
- 15:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh you know, whether that's all related to my depression and and that, I don't I don't know.
- 15:57Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It doesn't matter what it's related to.
- 16:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um and so again, I had the three-day free trial, just made sure again that I was able to, if I didn't use the particular equipment or free weights that I could at least see, it's like, oh, the basketball hoops.
- 16:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I was like, oh well, maybe sometime I'll bring my basketball and and I'll just you know shoot some hoops, just like the old days.
- 16:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: There's a um there's a punching bag.
- 16:39Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I I got I gotta look and see you know my boxing gloves.
- 16:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like I'm not I'm not joining the boxing circuit at all.
- 16:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But you know, just different different things that can do that can that are that are you know there's their options of of of you know with we're working out to do.
- 17:02Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and and so I wanted to share on this episode just this that maybe you maybe you've been thinking about it, maybe you haven't, for whatever reason.
- 17:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'm just sharing my experience and my story on this.
- 17:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, and so hopefully uh, you know, I'm able to stick stick to it, and I think I will be able to.
- 17:37Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um again, because of the close closeness, like the proximity.
- 17:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, you know, I don't have to drive, you know, 25 or 30 minutes to get there.
- 17:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um they have all the again, all the um all the equipment, all the free weights, all they have they have you know, everything that I would be looking to do, cardio, you know, stair climber, elliptical, bikes, uh, treadmill.
- 18:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, you know, so like there's there's so many uh there's so many different machines that uh you know I did I've obviously didn't try every single one.
- 18:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I was trying to do like a workout and try to see where certain ones were at.
- 18:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So maybe next time when I do my leg workout day, maybe I'll I won't do one that I you know a particular exercise that I did.
- 18:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and then maybe the next week I'll I'll do it again.
- 18:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's all about having the options of like, okay, let me try this, let me try that.
- 18:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And it's all about just being for me uh being tone and losing some way, this doing I I guess what I would consider lightweight training.
- 19:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You know, I'm not gonna be there like I used to be trying to max out on the bench press.
- 19:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I think I think I I think I maxed out like around 300 on the bench press, like again, years and years and years and years ago.
- 19:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like I'm not like that's not for me anymore.
- 19:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, not saying I won't do the bench press or won't integrate it somehow, some way, some days.
- 19:39Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, but it's just gonna be about it's just about doing it.
- 19:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's not about the amount of weight of like, okay.
- 19:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, for me, I'm gonna start out with the bar, right?
- 19:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: The bar is 45 pounds, I think it's 45 pounds, maybe 35.
- 19:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I gotta have to double check.
- 20:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I used to know all these things of uh of that, and then you know, the the the different uh machines, you know, if you see like the one, you would think it would be like for 10, like 10 pounds, and you see a two, you'd think it'd be 20, 3, 30, etc.
- 20:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, but there's like kind of like a little index or dictionary or whatever you want to call it, uh, where like one, if you like put the little, I don't even want, I don't even know what it's called, uh, but the little where you put the thing in where it stops, so it like you said it you put it like under whatever weight.
- 20:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So like if I want to do like the number one, which I think is like 12 and a half pounds, then I put it right under that that first plate that has a one on it.
- 20:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, and and so there's things like that, uh that you know, like to get used to a little bit.
- 21:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um but I think one other area is the time that I'm working out, the just understanding myself what the purpose of me working out is is the is huge.
- 21:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because if it's like, oh, well, I want to get all the way up and get back to where I was at, well, I don't think I would be able to do that.
- 21:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Maybe, maybe not, but that's not my goal.
- 21:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: My my my goal is you know having some sort of consistency you know throughout the week, whether it's four or five days or uh what have you, if I have travel or uh and when I'm in town, and uh and so I've also been doing some Tai Chi, been learning a little bit about that.
- 21:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: uh and uh ordered a jump rope so that if i'm traveling then i don't have to have that in the back of my mind of i gotta find a gym in an area in an like an area that i'm not familiar with uh if i find one that's great but at least you know in a hotel room or you know in front of the hotel like on the sidewall i can jump rope and you know i can do the tai chi in the hotel room uh and and and so for me it's all about just having those those slots and those openings of okay if i'm in this situation here's how i here's how i work through it uh and if i'm in this other situation where i'm home then i go to the that gym right and if i'm not take the jump rope the tai chi a lot of it actually most of it what i've seen i don't even know like you don't need any weights so it would just be looking up particular workouts on youtube or uh or i've even done you know screenshots of you know instagram posts that uh will show uh a whole slew of tai chi exercises and uh so i've been i was doing that for maybe like three or four days not all the tai chi there's so many to do but just a few and i started to like to feel like it was working and again it's all that's all about like getting toned and so that's where the gym uh is that that transition where if i'm not able to get to like a the gym with all the weights and all all that uh i i have kind of like my backup i got the jump rope i got the tai chi on my phone in my mind and and that's really it so if that's something that you're you know you what you want to do or if you've thought about it or if you've tried you know these these gyms that are just super packed and uh you know when I was growing up it it kind of seemed like there were like there were gyms where it was almost like heavy cardio and they're always and always packed or it was the other one the other you know if we're looking at like two ends of the spectrum the other end of the spectrum being you know some people that are at a specific gym and they're you know getting ready for the next bodybuilding competition not everybody but there's people like that and so that can be like overwhelming when I'm doing 10 pounds of a certain exercise and somebody else is doing like 80 or something and so that's also well that's actually where the the mental health comes in is not to worry about it like just get focused on here's what I need to do here's what I want to do here's why I came and then I'm gonna execute that plan and uh and and and and do it that way.
- 25:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And again for me right now it's all about just being toned.
- 26:02Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'm 44 years old I'm not 24 um I I'm I'm I'm doing doing this for my myself because I've overlooked my outward health and and so now I'm trying to again reintegrate the outward health and and have that be that'll close the loop on the mental health and then the outward health um so that's my story thank you for joining us thumbs up like follow subscribe share repost let everybody know about the Voices for Voices TV show and podcast you can find it wherever you find your podcast at reach in your phone and uh reach out to 25 contacts share our podcast help us reach and help three billion plus people over the course of my lifetime and beyond and until next time hope you have a great day and we're sending love and support and you don't have to be a believer to be a part of our family you just have to be a human being that wants the best for uh all human beings and uh I think uh we can agree on a good bit of of that uh so thank you very much we'll talk to you you'll hear us you'll watch us soon and we will see you at that time take care.
