Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture news twice a week. I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: Kate Torber and coming up on today's show, Tammy Hembrough
- 0:14Speaker 1: returns to dating as the new face of Tinder, Sarah's
- 0:17Speaker 1: Day's fitness challenge kicks off and Louis Tomlinson opens up
- 0:21Speaker 1: for the first time about One Direction's cold split. But first,
- 0:25Speaker 1: I am joined by both Amy and Sophie. It is
- 0:28Speaker 1: the first time in over six months that all three
- 0:30Speaker 1: of us have been on the podcast, bar the birth episodes.
- 0:33Speaker 1: There's a bit of pressure. This better be a good
- 0:35Speaker 1: episode if all three of us are on it.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I know.
- 0:38Speaker 1: We are on a strict time schedule as well. Somehow
- 0:41Speaker 1: we are managing to do this while all of our
- 0:42Speaker 1: kids are either napping or with their grandparents. Now, I
- 0:45Speaker 1: want to kick things off by talking about an unorthodox
- 0:48Speaker 1: partnership that developed between Molly Mae and Heinz. Amy, can
- 0:52Speaker 1: you tell us more? Now, when you think of Molly Mae,
- 0:54Speaker 1: you'd never think she would actually share an unboxing of
- 0:58Speaker 1: Heinz baked beans. However, the Heinz team clearly have their
- 1:02Speaker 1: finger on the pulse because they sent Molly a can
- 1:05Speaker 1: adorned with Emily's beans, Bambi's beans, and Dory's beans. And
- 1:10Speaker 1: as Molly said in a video, if you know, you know. Now,
- 1:13Speaker 1: we discussed this on the show a couple of weeks ago,
- 1:15Speaker 1: but this is in reference to that viral video of
- 1:18Speaker 1: Molly Mae's daughter discussing who she wanted to bite at daycare.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Let's throw to a little bit of what she said.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I'm going to bite someone.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Oh, no, no.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I'm going to bite.
- 1:31Speaker 2: No. No way.
- 1:33Speaker 3: No, we don't use our mouth to bite, do we?
- 1:36Speaker 3: What do we use our mouth for?
- 1:38Speaker 2: For.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. For food, for eating.
- 1:42Speaker 1: We bite our food.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Don't bite anyone.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Good.
- 1:46Speaker 3: We bite Emily.
- 1:49Speaker 4: No.
- 1:52Speaker 3: We bite Dory.
- 1:54Speaker 1: No. Clearly someone on the marketing team of Heinz saw
- 1:58Speaker 1: an opportunity and ran with it. The only thing that
- 2:01Speaker 1: doesn't make sense in my mind is during that clip,
- 2:04Speaker 1: Molly said, we don't bite Emily. We don't bite Dory.
- 2:08Speaker 1: but we bite food. And this is food. This is
- 2:11Speaker 1: Emily's beans. Well, they're clearly, Sophie, giving each of the
- 2:13Speaker 1: girls beans to eat instead of biting each other. That
- 2:16Speaker 1: is the whole clever thing about this campaign. And it
- 2:19Speaker 1: is just such great reactive marketing. I mean, this wouldn't
- 2:21Speaker 1: have cost Heinz much money at all. And the exposure
- 2:24Speaker 1: they have now received from Molly's channel, and also due
- 2:27Speaker 1: to all of the countless TikTok videos that have been
- 2:30Speaker 1: put up, It's absolutely priceless. It actually does make me
- 2:33Speaker 1: feel like cracking open a tin of baked beans. But
- 2:36Speaker 1: I feel like they're more something that you enjoy in winter,
- 2:39Speaker 1: which obviously in the UK, it's coming up to winter. Well,
- 2:41Speaker 1: the Heinz campaign has also allowed Molly to address the
- 2:44Speaker 1: viral video in a little bit more detail. So she
- 2:46Speaker 1: cleared up a misconception. She revealed that one of the
- 2:50Speaker 1: girls Bambi intended on biting wasn't actually named Dory, as
- 2:54Speaker 1: all the memes ran with. Let's take a listen to
- 2:56Speaker 1: what she said.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Well, this is the perfect time for me to mention,
- 3:00Speaker 3: I actually love that people think it's Dory, but it's
- 3:03Speaker 3: actually Story. That's who she was talking about. I, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 3: I think either way, it's not really acceptable, but it
- 3:12Speaker 3: was Story, not Dory. Even Sky TV, like the Sky
- 3:15Speaker 3: TV channel, they were posting on their TikTok account pictures
- 3:18Speaker 3: of Dory from like Finding Nemo. I'm just like, listen,
- 3:20Speaker 3: like whoever they want to interpret it as, like either way,
- 3:22Speaker 3: it's not okay. And either way, I don't condone.
- 3:25Speaker 4: It, but....
- 3:27Speaker 1: It's interesting because story features quite often on Molly's channel.
- 3:30Speaker 1: She is the daughter of Molly's best friend. So Bambi
- 3:34Speaker 1: doesn't seem very happy with her. Yeah, but remember when
- 3:36Speaker 1: they were trying to crack the code of who the
- 3:38Speaker 1: biter was initially, she said that one of her friend's
- 3:42Speaker 1: daughters also got bitten. And so maybe unbeknownst to her,
- 3:46Speaker 1: it was actually Bambi who bit her. Did you guys
- 3:48Speaker 1: think there was a TikTok that went viral? And it
- 3:50Speaker 1: was a photo someone posted of their child who'd been
- 3:52Speaker 1: bitten at daycare. And her name was Emily. And everyone
- 3:55Speaker 1: was flooding the comment section saying, well, she must go
- 3:58Speaker 1: to Molly Mae's daughter's daycare. Well, I hope Bambi takes
- 4:01Speaker 1: some beans for her as an apology. Rumors are true.
- 4:05Speaker 4: I'm officially in my new dating era. And yes, I'm
- 4:09Speaker 4: on Tinder looking for my next crush.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Tammy Hembrough has announced she's looking for her next crush
- 4:16Speaker 1: on Tinder. The OG fitness influencer made the revelation as
- 4:20Speaker 1: part of a paid partnership with the dating app. Ironically,
- 4:23Speaker 1: the news comes just weeks after Tinder's former ambassador and
- 4:27Speaker 1: AFL player, Bailey Smith, publicly friend-zoned Tammy. Kate, can you
- 4:31Speaker 1: tell us more about the announcement? Well, Tammy shared the
- 4:34Speaker 1: reel in collaboration with Tinder. And at the time of recording,
- 4:37Speaker 1: it's had over a million views. Now, Tammy and Tinder
- 4:40Speaker 1: definitely knew what they were doing. In the reel, Tammy
- 4:43Speaker 1: is sitting in her car like she does for a
- 4:45Speaker 1: lot of her candid content and text appeared on the
- 4:48Speaker 1: screen that said, addressing the rumors. I clicked on this
- 4:51Speaker 1: so quickly. Let's take a listen to some of what
- 4:54Speaker 1: she said.
- 4:55Speaker 4: My dating life always seems to make headlines, but you're
- 4:59Speaker 4: hearing it here first. I'm officially putting myself back out there. Honestly,
- 5:03Speaker 4: I feel like everyone thinks dating has to be so
- 5:06Speaker 4: serious and It's supposed to be fun. So I'm on
- 5:09Speaker 4: Tinder to see who's out there. Hopefully I'll meet some
- 5:12Speaker 4: people who match my vibe. And if it turns into
- 5:14Speaker 4: something more, even better.
- 5:17Speaker 1: There were pretty mixed reviews in the comment section of
- 5:20Speaker 1: this paid partnership post. There was a lot of commentary
- 5:23Speaker 1: about how much she got paid to promote Tinder. One
- 5:27Speaker 1: person wrote, love you girl, but be real right now.
- 5:29Speaker 1: How much did they pay you? And that comment got
- 5:32Speaker 1: over 1.2 thousand likes. Another follower was happy for Tammy writing,
- 5:37Speaker 1: you know what? Hell yeah. Tinder paid her a stack
- 5:40Speaker 1: to promo this. So why the hell not go you?
- 5:42Speaker 1: What do we think she got paid for this? It
- 5:45Speaker 1: would have had to be a hell of a lot
- 5:47Speaker 1: considering she's putting out there that she's single. She's had
- 5:50Speaker 1: to make a public profile where essentially I'm assuming she's
- 5:54Speaker 1: pretending that she's actively looking on there. She's not looking
- 5:57Speaker 1: on there. She would be on Raya. I would say
- 6:00Speaker 1: she would be paid in the hundreds of thousands for
- 6:02Speaker 1: this because it means that she has to publicly open
- 6:05Speaker 1: up about her dating life, which she already gets so
- 6:08Speaker 1: much flack for. And she got a lot of flack
- 6:10Speaker 1: in the comments. She ended up having to go on
- 6:12Speaker 1: an Instagram story and say, guys, don't hate the player,
- 6:15Speaker 1: hate the game, come on now. I also think judging
- 6:18Speaker 1: by her audience size, this would have been a massive
- 6:20Speaker 1: paycheck as well. So I don't think you're far off
- 6:23Speaker 1: when you're saying the hundreds of thousands. There was also
- 6:25Speaker 1: a lot of commentary around people being surprised that she
- 6:28Speaker 1: was single. Lots of people were writing, didn't you just
- 6:31Speaker 1: get married? I mean, come on, keep up everyone. Well,
- 6:34Speaker 1: the thing that just surprised me the most was obviously
- 6:36Speaker 1: Bailey Smith had his huge campaign with Tinder. And I
- 6:39Speaker 1: just thought, wait a sec, are you guys at Tinder
- 6:42Speaker 1: trying to claim that this is how they met? Like,
- 6:45Speaker 1: are you backtracking now? What's going on?
- 6:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 1: A lot of people seem confused. I think that the
- 6:50Speaker 1: Tinder marketing team were just clever and thought, oh my God,
- 6:52Speaker 1: Bailey Smith and Tammy Hembrough dating has received so much publicity.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Let's reach out to her and see if she's keen. Well,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I'm kind of happy for Tinder because the pair were
- 7:01Speaker 1: first spotted just weeks after the company launched Bailey as
- 7:03Speaker 1: the face of their double dating campaign. It kind of
- 7:06Speaker 1: screwed the campaign over for them and it's incredible marketing
- 7:10Speaker 1: from Tinder. I don't know if it necessarily screwed over
- 7:13Speaker 1: their campaign because I feel like Tinder has a bit
- 7:15Speaker 1: of a reputation for being a casual dating app and
- 7:19Speaker 1: clearly Tammy and Bailey are We're just seeing where things went.
- 7:22Speaker 1: They weren't particularly serious. But it was obvious that they
- 7:25Speaker 1: didn't meet on Tinder. I mean, Bailey confirmed on the
- 7:27Speaker 1: Kyle and Jackie O show that he slid into her DMs.
- 7:30Speaker 1: And we've got to remember the point of getting Bailey
- 7:33Speaker 1: Smith on Tinder was so that they could attract a
- 7:36Speaker 1: lot of females back to the app. And, you know,
- 7:38Speaker 1: if you think, oh, there's no point he's not even
- 7:41Speaker 1: on here because he's dating Tammy Hembrough, like it It
- 7:43Speaker 1: did throw a spanner in the works to their campaign.
- 7:46Speaker 1: It is an interesting move, though, because by using Bailey
- 7:49Speaker 1: Smith as an ambassador, they were clearly going for a
- 7:52Speaker 1: female Gen Z audience. With Tammy, her following would predominantly
- 7:56Speaker 1: be millennial women. So are they trying to attract both
- 8:00Speaker 1: of those different age groups on board? Well, I think
- 8:03Speaker 1: Tinder have more got her on board because they know
- 8:05Speaker 1: that traditional media are going to jump on this. Every
- 8:08Speaker 1: time Tammy does something since her divorce... Even traditional media
- 8:13Speaker 1: cover it. Well, it's brand awareness, isn't it? Yeah, so
- 8:15Speaker 1: they've got so much coverage. I mean, a lot of
- 8:17Speaker 1: people probably thought Tinder was no longer around. I mean,
- 8:20Speaker 1: dating apps at the moment are going through a really
- 8:23Speaker 1: tricky time. Just recently, we saw Bumble cut a third
- 8:27Speaker 1: of its workforce. Tinder have been in a similar predicament.
- 8:30Speaker 1: They've cut 13% of jobs at their place of work. Well,
- 8:33Speaker 1: when I chat to any single friends, everyone says that
- 8:35Speaker 1: they're always on Hinge. I found it a little bit
- 8:38Speaker 1: far-fetched that people now think that the whole Tammy and
- 8:41Speaker 1: Bailey relationship was just a PR campaign for Tinder. Because
- 8:45Speaker 1: if it was, it's definitely beaten out the Indian bouvet
- 8:48Speaker 1: campaign when she was supposedly working an office job. But
- 8:51Speaker 1: it doesn't really make any sense that this was a
- 8:53Speaker 1: campaign because as we've established, they didn't meet on Tinder. Well,
- 8:56Speaker 1: and also if you look at it logically, it would
- 8:57Speaker 1: make more sense if they were both ambassadors at the
- 9:00Speaker 1: time for Tinder. Because it would be like, oh, they
- 9:02Speaker 1: must have met on the app. But it's clearly just
- 9:04Speaker 1: reactive PR. And it's not as if Tammy's popped up saying,
- 9:07Speaker 1: you know, I met a really great guy on this app.
- 9:10Speaker 1: There's no actual connection between the Tammy campaign and the
- 9:13Speaker 1: Bailey campaign. I wonder what Bailey's thinking about it, because
- 9:17Speaker 1: it seems like perhaps they're not speaking anymore. I think
- 9:19Speaker 1: that's all bullshit. I think they're still seeing each other.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Just because Bailey didn't bring Tammy to the brown, though.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It doesn't mean everything is off. Like you don't actually
- 9:28Speaker 1: bring someone you're casually seeing to a huge awards night
- 9:31Speaker 1: like that. Putting it out there, do we think part
- 9:34Speaker 1: two of the campaign is a reunion between Bailey and Tammy?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Maybe they reconnect on Tinder and we see them back
- 9:41Speaker 1: out on the Gold Coast. I don't know if this
- 9:43Speaker 1: campaign is helping Tammy though, because a lot of people
- 9:45Speaker 1: have been keeping score about who's winning the the breakup
- 9:48Speaker 1: between Matt and Tammy. And I think Matt has been
- 9:51Speaker 1: playing it incredibly well over the last couple of weeks.
- 9:53Speaker 1: He's been garnering a lot of sympathy recently. Obviously, that
- 9:56Speaker 1: might have dropped off a bit after he was seen
- 9:58Speaker 1: out with his new Adelaide girl. Well, the timing of
- 10:01Speaker 1: this campaign launching is interesting because, as you said, over
- 10:03Speaker 1: the weekend, Matt was spotted in Adelaide with a new woman.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It kind of seems like every time Matt does something,
- 10:09Speaker 1: Tammy manages to take the attention back. I'm on day
- 10:13Speaker 1: two of the 560 challenge along with over 2,000 of you.
- 10:18Speaker 4: How fun.
- 10:19Speaker 1: We are all doing it together. Sarah's Day's 560 challenge
- 10:23Speaker 1: kicked off this week with more than 2,000 women signing
- 10:26Speaker 1: up to take part. While sales figures have likely hit $ 300, 000,
- 10:30Speaker 1: the stat has led many to question Sarah's relevance. Now, Kate,
- 10:34Speaker 1: what do you think about the number of people who've
- 10:36Speaker 1: signed up? Well, she's clearly made a lot of money
- 10:39Speaker 1: off the bat with this program because it costs $ 145.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And when you times that by 2000, you hit just
- 10:47Speaker 1: under 300K, which is a massive amount of money. But
- 10:51Speaker 1: when you consider that she has a following of 1
- 10:53Speaker 1: million people, it's a pretty low percentage of her followers
- 10:56Speaker 1: that she's actually got to purchase this fitness program. Well,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I wouldn't be turning my nose up at $ 300, 000 though
- 11:02Speaker 1: in a couple of weeks. Oh, definitely not. But I
- 11:04Speaker 1: do think it is reflective of the relevance that Sarah has,
- 11:07Speaker 1: particularly when you look at the sales figures for her
- 11:10Speaker 1: previous eBooks. So she's sold five different eBooks and she
- 11:15Speaker 1: has promoted heavily on her website and across social media
- 11:19Speaker 1: that she's had 150,000 downloads on those eBooks. So when
- 11:22Speaker 1: you consider that the latest eBook ebook has only had 2000.
- 11:27Speaker 1: That's a long way off what she used to do.
- 11:29Speaker 1: But the other ebooks have been around for quite some
- 11:31Speaker 1: time now. I think the first ebook was launched 10
- 11:34Speaker 1: years ago. So yeah, but I think that they had
- 11:37Speaker 1: the majority of downloads at the start. Well, it's not
- 11:40Speaker 1: particularly surprising because in recent years, she's really moved away
- 11:43Speaker 1: from fitness content and she's more moved into the motherhood space.
- 11:48Speaker 1: When she was at her peak, she was releasing three
- 11:51Speaker 1: vlogs a week. Nowadays, you're lucky to get one vlog
- 11:54Speaker 1: a month. I'm hoping this actually is a reflection on
- 11:58Speaker 1: the fact that as a society, we can now see
- 12:01Speaker 1: through toxic diet culture and people are no longer willing
- 12:04Speaker 1: to sign up to this 60 day program that pushes
- 12:08Speaker 1: this very toxic rhetoric around exercising and punishing yourself and
- 12:12Speaker 1: being accountable. I also think though, a lot of it
- 12:15Speaker 1: has to do with the fact that there's a lot
- 12:17Speaker 1: of competition out there since Sarah first launched her eBooks.
- 12:20Speaker 1: You know, we've got so many different influencer guides and
- 12:23Speaker 1: a lot of influencers have moved from eBooks to apps
- 12:26Speaker 1: that are a lot cheaper. I mean, $ 145 for a
- 12:29Speaker 1: 60-day program is a lot of money. Her previous eBooks
- 12:32Speaker 1: were half the price. It is really expensive, but it's
- 12:35Speaker 1: funny you mentioned the toxic element, Kate, because I think
- 12:38Speaker 1: that's what actually has appealed to the people that have
- 12:40Speaker 1: signed up. Because I was speaking to a friend and
- 12:42Speaker 1: she said, look, I know that Sarah's Day can be toxic,
- 12:45Speaker 1: but it kind of makes me want to do the
- 12:47Speaker 1: guide because I do want to get fit. And I
- 12:50Speaker 1: see the results that she has. Well, an anonymous member
- 12:52Speaker 1: of our Facebook group actually submitted a similar post saying,
- 12:56Speaker 1: I have been looking at the guide and I know
- 12:58Speaker 1: it's probably toxic, but should I do it? And the
- 13:02Speaker 1: feedback in our Facebook community was, no, don't do it.
- 13:05Speaker 1: A lot of people were like, just get onto ChatGPT
- 13:07Speaker 1: and get them to draw a plan up for you
- 13:08Speaker 1: because it is a waste of money considering that Sarah
- 13:10Speaker 1: Day has no qualifications. I mean, I'm actually quite concerned
- 13:13Speaker 1: because a lot of the commentary that since this challenge
- 13:17Speaker 1: has taken part is that people are finding it really difficult.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And some people are saying, I haven't been able to
- 13:23Speaker 1: walk since doing the challenge. Are there any alternatives that
- 13:26Speaker 1: we can do? And she's had to put out a
- 13:28Speaker 1: video showing alternative exercises saying, oh, this is actually an
- 13:32Speaker 1: intermediate advanced program. But if you're a beginner, you can
- 13:34Speaker 1: do this. Now, nowhere in the marketing did it ever
- 13:37Speaker 1: say intermediate to advanced. I think Sarah has just got
- 13:40Speaker 1: her audience wrong, particularly considering that she's been marketing a
- 13:44Speaker 1: program for mums returning to exercises That is far too difficult. Look,
- 13:47Speaker 1: I succumbed to the temptation. I want to say it
- 13:50Speaker 1: was probably seven years ago and I bought one of
- 13:54Speaker 1: her eBooks. I think it was the sweaty shredder one.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Sweat it to shred it.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Oh, what? Yeah.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Sweat it to shred it, whatever it's called. And it
- 14:00Speaker 1: was because I really wanted the results. I mean, Sarah
- 14:03Speaker 1: has an incredible figure. Anyway, it was torture this plant.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Every day there was a new workout that seemed to
- 14:10Speaker 1: be just crueler than the last one. I remember She
- 14:13Speaker 1: said to get a pack of cards and throw them
- 14:15Speaker 1: on the ground. And then each suit would be a
- 14:17Speaker 1: particular type of exercise. And then the number on them
- 14:20Speaker 1: would be how many you had to do. And if
- 14:22Speaker 1: you consider how many cards are in a pack of cards,
- 14:25Speaker 1: oh my God, it was absolutely hellish. And it was
- 14:27Speaker 1: just not realistic or enjoyable. Well, it's interesting you mentioned
- 14:30Speaker 1: her Sweat It to Shred It guide because the first
- 14:33Speaker 1: workout was recycled from that program. And it seems like
- 14:37Speaker 1: she's just repeating some of the workouts that are in
- 14:39Speaker 1: previous eBooks, which if I had bought those before. I
- 14:43Speaker 1: don't know how I'd feel about it. Well, she seems
- 14:44Speaker 1: to be complaining a bit about the challenge herself because
- 14:48Speaker 1: as we've touched on, there are a set of rules
- 14:50Speaker 1: that you need to abide by when you're doing the challenge,
- 14:52Speaker 1: which just seems particularly archaic. And she complained that she
- 14:56Speaker 1: didn't like the no social media after 6pm. And it
- 15:00Speaker 1: is an interesting rule because it means she can't actually
- 15:02Speaker 1: document what she's having for dinner on the meal plan,
- 15:05Speaker 1: which is another way to promote her product. Yeah, she
- 15:08Speaker 1: should have done after 8pm. She's probably kicking herself so
- 15:12Speaker 1: worried about how many injuries are going to be sustained
- 15:15Speaker 1: from this program, particularly because it's 60 days of consecutive
- 15:19Speaker 1: exercise with no rest and recovery. What percentage of the
- 15:23Speaker 1: 2,000 do we think are actually completing the full 60 days? Well,
- 15:27Speaker 1: what's also different this time around about her marketing this
- 15:30Speaker 1: style of program is that a lot of these people
- 15:33Speaker 1: who've purchased it, they have their right of reply on
- 15:35Speaker 1: TikTok now. So they can jump on TikTok, they can
- 15:39Speaker 1: complain about their injuries and complain about how difficult it is.
- 15:42Speaker 1: And it would be very difficult having a brand these
- 15:45Speaker 1: days with that in mind, particularly a program like this.
- 15:48Speaker 1: In all honesty though, do you think she cares? Because
- 15:50Speaker 1: it kind of seems like a bit of a money
- 15:52Speaker 1: grab to me, the fact that her perfume didn't really
- 15:54Speaker 1: work out with who is Elijah. Well, it didn't work out.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Now she's been able to put out this program and pocket, what, 300K.
- 16:01Speaker 1: There wouldn't have been too much monetary input into getting it.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Other than a graphic designer, what else would she have
- 16:07Speaker 1: spent money on? I actually think that it's more her
- 16:10Speaker 1: trying to rework her image and find herself again after
- 16:14Speaker 1: having three children. And before those three children, she was
- 16:16Speaker 1: fanatical about exercise. So in that sense, I'm happy for
- 16:19Speaker 1: her that she's leaning back into something that interests her,
- 16:22Speaker 1: but not really happy that this program is quite outdated.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Oh God, Sophia, that's so earnest of you. It's clearly
- 16:28Speaker 1: a cash grab. And it's worked. It's made her nearly $ 300, 000.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I'm sure that nice little deposit into her bank account
- 16:36Speaker 1: might be going towards her second beach house.
- 16:39Speaker 2: These are all the same faces that I've seen every
- 16:41Speaker 2: single day, but I've never quite felt an energy like
- 16:43Speaker 2: that in the room. There was this emptiness.
- 16:48Speaker 1: For the first time, former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson
- 16:52Speaker 1: has given inside details about the band's decision to go
- 16:55Speaker 1: on a hiatus. Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast,
- 16:59Speaker 1: Louis labelled the split as cold and said he can't
- 17:01Speaker 1: imagine a reunion after Liam Payne's death. Now Sophie, Louis'
- 17:05Speaker 1: appearance on the podcast was a pretty big deal. It
- 17:08Speaker 1: ended up screening in theatres across the US and UK.
- 17:11Speaker 1: I'm just spewing that it wasn't screened here in Australia
- 17:14Speaker 1: because I am a massive One Direction fan and I
- 17:17Speaker 1: was gripped by this interview. It was definitely also long
- 17:20Speaker 1: enough to be a movie. It was nearly two and
- 17:22Speaker 1: a half hours and I felt like he came across
- 17:25Speaker 1: really well. He was very articulate. thoughtful in what he said,
- 17:29Speaker 1: and also very humble. He straight up said off the
- 17:32Speaker 1: bat that he's aware that he's not the best singer
- 17:34Speaker 1: in the world and admitted at times that he's been
- 17:37Speaker 1: very uncomfortable with his success. I have to say, like,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I am a One Direction fan. I went to their
- 17:42Speaker 1: concert when they came here in Adelaide, loved their music.
- 17:45Speaker 1: but I was never really, you know, I wasn't one
- 17:47Speaker 1: of those obsessive fans. I didn't really know a lot
- 17:50Speaker 1: about Louis. Well, I think that we were too old
- 17:52Speaker 1: to be sort of in the fandom. So it was
- 17:54Speaker 1: really interesting to actually hear him talk for two hours
- 17:58Speaker 1: because when, you know, One Direction do interviews, you only
- 18:00Speaker 1: hear very little bits and pieces from the boys, but
- 18:03Speaker 1: he was a bit of a fan favorite. I think
- 18:05Speaker 1: more for his personality rather than his ability.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And He was one of my favorites purely on looks.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I thought he was really cute at the time. And
- 18:15Speaker 1: I was like, wow, I knew there was something about
- 18:17Speaker 1: him because he just came across as such a nice guy.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Reflecting on what he said about his success, it was
- 18:23Speaker 1: quite interesting because he said it's only been in the
- 18:26Speaker 1: past two years that he's actually put up his awards
- 18:29Speaker 1: in his house. And he explained that he was worried
- 18:31Speaker 1: when people came over that they would notice the awards
- 18:34Speaker 1: and And it would make them feel uncomfortable. And the
- 18:37Speaker 1: conversation would instantly gravitate back to his success. And he
- 18:40Speaker 1: said that in life, he just wants to be in
- 18:42Speaker 1: an even playing field with everyone. And he doesn't want
- 18:45Speaker 1: to be that guy in the band who won those awards.
- 18:48Speaker 1: It's really clear that he's craving this sense of normality.
- 18:52Speaker 1: The part of the podcast that really touched me the
- 18:54Speaker 1: most was when he spoke about losing his mom and
- 18:56Speaker 1: his sister, because we haven't actually heard until now him
- 18:59Speaker 1: speak in detail about what actually happened and how he
- 19:02Speaker 1: felt at the time.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:03Speaker 1: And I think what really shone through was that even
- 19:07Speaker 1: though he's had all of these terrible things happen to
- 19:10Speaker 1: him and these big losses, he still remains this glass
- 19:13Speaker 1: half full kind of guy. He said that he doesn't
- 19:15Speaker 1: want to be pitied or defined by those moments in
- 19:17Speaker 1: his life. You could tell he carried a lot of
- 19:19Speaker 1: guilt around being away during his One Direction days. He
- 19:23Speaker 1: spoke about how he has identical twin sisters and he
- 19:27Speaker 1: started to not be able to tell them apart. So
- 19:29Speaker 1: he used to be like, oh, hey, babe, hey, babe.
- 19:31Speaker 1: But He said he doesn't even think they know that
- 19:34Speaker 1: he couldn't tell them apart. Yeah, well, he said he'd
- 19:35Speaker 1: never told his sisters Daisy or Phoebe that story. Now,
- 19:39Speaker 1: what I was really fascinated to hear about was 10
- 19:41Speaker 1: years on how Louis actually felt about Zayn Malik's departure
- 19:45Speaker 1: from One Direction because at the time, fans were really
- 19:49Speaker 1: shocked by Zayn's decision and they feared it was the
- 19:52Speaker 1: beginning of the end of the band, which it ended
- 19:55Speaker 1: up being. And Louis admitted that he was absolutely crushed
- 19:59Speaker 1: by this decision and he was devastated as Zayn was
- 20:02Speaker 1: actually one of his best mates in the band at
- 20:03Speaker 1: the time. I was really interested to hear what went
- 20:05Speaker 1: on behind the scenes because Louis was the one that
- 20:08Speaker 1: actually lashed out at Zayn on social media. You could
- 20:11Speaker 1: tell he really wasn't happy about it. Yeah, well, in
- 20:14Speaker 1: this interview, he said it felt like a betrayal because
- 20:16Speaker 1: they were best friends and he went on to share
- 20:18Speaker 1: these stories, I suppose, to demonstrate how close they were.
- 20:22Speaker 1: They were the only two band members at the end
- 20:24Speaker 1: who actually continued sharing their dressing rooms with one another
- 20:28Speaker 1: because he said initially when they started One Direction, they
- 20:30Speaker 1: didn't want to be this band who were up themselves
- 20:33Speaker 1: and had individual dressing rooms. But That ended up being
- 20:37Speaker 1: the case. He also spoke about how he and Zayn
- 20:40Speaker 1: would return to the tour bus after each show and
- 20:43Speaker 1: smoke weed and play Call of Duty or Zombies together.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And this was off the back of Stephen Bartlett bringing
- 20:49Speaker 1: up Liam Payne's interview that he did a number of
- 20:52Speaker 1: years ago where he spoke about using the minibar as
- 20:55Speaker 1: a vice following the big shows. And Louis admitted that
- 20:58Speaker 1: his vice was weed. I was surprised how often he
- 21:01Speaker 1: dropped about smoking weed because I think I still think
- 21:04Speaker 1: of him as being that young boy from One Direction
- 21:07Speaker 1: and it was such a squeaky clean band that if
- 21:10Speaker 1: a story like that had come out while they were
- 21:13Speaker 1: in the band in its heyday, I think it would
- 21:15Speaker 1: have been massive. Yeah, but that's because Weed is pretty
- 21:17Speaker 1: small fry and as he said that it gave him
- 21:19Speaker 1: a sense of normality because he knew that his mates
- 21:22Speaker 1: back home were doing the same thing and it's not
- 21:24Speaker 1: a big deal but I'm just saying that I feel
- 21:26Speaker 1: like if that story broke, it would have been a
- 21:28Speaker 1: massive deal. Remember the huge headlines when Prince Harry got
- 21:32Speaker 1: caught with weed? It was like front page news. Yeah, well,
- 21:34Speaker 1: I suppose there would have been a lot of discussions
- 21:36Speaker 1: around the fact that they're role models to young kids.
- 21:38Speaker 1: But it's quite interesting because he said that the weed
- 21:41Speaker 1: really suited his brain at the time because they would
- 21:44Speaker 1: have such a crazy experience on stage that he would
- 21:46Speaker 1: have all of this noise in his head and the
- 21:49Speaker 1: weed would help quieten it down. And he described it
- 21:52Speaker 1: as a really lovely way to debrief with Zayn after
- 21:55Speaker 1: the shows, away from all of the madness, where he
- 21:58Speaker 1: said that they would just get into cliche stoner chats
- 22:01Speaker 1: about UFOs and other controversial topics like that. So for Louis,
- 22:06Speaker 1: when Zayn announced that he was leaving, he thought, well,
- 22:10Speaker 1: why didn't he speak openly to me about this before
- 22:12Speaker 1: and give him the heads up that he was going
- 22:14Speaker 1: to make this announcement? Well, the way Louis found out
- 22:17Speaker 1: was the fact that Zayn didn't rock up to this
- 22:18Speaker 1: Coke commercial that they had. And Louis said that if
- 22:21Speaker 1: Zayn didn't want to do something, he literally wouldn't do it.
- 22:23Speaker 1: So it wasn't like a big deal that Zayn hadn't
- 22:25Speaker 1: shown up. But then later that day, the announcement broke
- 22:29Speaker 1: and it just left him absolutely floored. Louis did question
- 22:33Speaker 1: whether Zayn would have regretted that decision. He said that
- 22:36Speaker 1: he surely must miss the band. And he pointed out
- 22:39Speaker 1: that when you're in a band, you can share out
- 22:41Speaker 1: the jobs that you don't want to do. And it
- 22:43Speaker 1: sounded like Zayn hated giving press interviews and he said,
- 22:47Speaker 1: you know, well, he's got to do all of that
- 22:48Speaker 1: now himself, which he probably really dislikes. He also admitted
- 22:52Speaker 1: that when they've caught up in recent years, Zayn's departure
- 22:55Speaker 1: has really been the elephant in the room and they
- 22:58Speaker 1: haven't actually discussed it, but he said that there will
- 23:00Speaker 1: be a time for that. When he said that, I
- 23:02Speaker 1: was wondering if that was a little bit of a
- 23:04Speaker 1: teaser for the docu-series that's meant to be airing on
- 23:08Speaker 1: Netflix when Zayn and Louie drive around the US. I
- 23:12Speaker 1: think that they're going to tackle it head on then.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Cause we spoke about that in a recent subs episode
- 23:16Speaker 1: and I thought the exact same thing, Kate, when I
- 23:18Speaker 1: was listening to it, I was like, he is clearly
- 23:20Speaker 1: teasing this television show. Well, do you know what's ironic?
- 23:24Speaker 1: Because when One Direction broke up, I really thought that
- 23:27Speaker 1: all of the band members were on board and they
- 23:29Speaker 1: were all really keen to move on to their solo
- 23:31Speaker 1: careers and maybe they'd had enough of the One Direction days,
- 23:34Speaker 1: but it was clear that Louis was absolutely shattered by
- 23:37Speaker 1: the news. And he said, that it had an immense
- 23:39Speaker 1: impact on him. Let's have a listen to some of
- 23:42Speaker 1: what he said.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it was awful. It wasn't until after the event
- 23:46Speaker 2: that I realised that I actually computed all these feelings,
- 23:49Speaker 2: but it was like I was straight grieving for it.
- 23:51Speaker 2: That was grieving the band. I'm someone who unfortunately has
- 23:54Speaker 2: a little bit of experience in grief and albeit it
- 23:58Speaker 2: felt different, but it was a version of the same thing.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It was something that I really wanted that I couldn't
- 24:02Speaker 2: have anymore.
- 24:05Speaker 1: You could tell how upset he was by the fact
- 24:08Speaker 1: that he seemed really rattled by the word hiatus. And
- 24:11Speaker 1: even he didn't know what that actually meant in terms
- 24:13Speaker 1: of the length. I found it fascinating the blow by
- 24:17Speaker 1: blow detail he gave about that meeting. Did anyone else
- 24:20Speaker 1: think it was Harry that split the whole band up?
- 24:22Speaker 1: He obviously got an independent deal. Yeah, 100%. He said
- 24:25Speaker 1: that whilst it was a discussion between the four band
- 24:27Speaker 1: members and not representatives, there was this coldness in the air.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Let's have a listen to more of what he said.
- 24:35Speaker 2: It was an atmosphere that I never really felt in
- 24:37Speaker 2: the band because normally, like I said, we're arm in arm.
- 24:40Speaker 2: It's all this camaraderie. And then all of a sudden
- 24:42Speaker 2: you get someone thinking more independently and more for themselves, which,
- 24:45Speaker 2: by the way, they have every right to do, of course.
- 24:48Speaker 2: But the room felt cold that day. I can remember
- 24:51Speaker 2: that in particular. I'm trying to find the right metaphor
- 24:55Speaker 2: for it, but it was something where These are all
- 24:58Speaker 2: the same faces that I've seen every single day, but
- 25:00Speaker 2: I've never quite felt an energy like that in the room.
- 25:03Speaker 2: There was this emptiness. And I think probably because we
- 25:09Speaker 2: all knew collectively where it was going, you know, and
- 25:12Speaker 2: that's probably some friction between those ideas.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I mean, I love Harry, but it made me sad.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I was like, this is bullshit. Like, you should have
- 25:20Speaker 1: stayed together. Yeah, and the fact that Louis had already
- 25:23Speaker 1: referenced at the start of this interview that he felt
- 25:25Speaker 1: like he didn't have the best voice. you could tell
- 25:28Speaker 1: that he knew that this was such a big hit
- 25:30Speaker 1: for him because he was now having to compete against
- 25:33Speaker 1: the likes of Harry Styles. Well, that's the thing. He
- 25:36Speaker 1: said that he was quite naive at the time because
- 25:38Speaker 1: he kept asking, how long is this break going to
- 25:41Speaker 1: last for? Because he said, well, if I'm going to
- 25:43Speaker 1: explore my own solo career, I kind of need to
- 25:45Speaker 1: know when I'm going to be back in the band,
- 25:47Speaker 1: which made me feel really sad. And he said that
- 25:49Speaker 1: he never really got an answer because he doesn't think
- 25:52Speaker 1: that the person involved, a.k.a. Harry Styles, was brave enough
- 25:55Speaker 1: to answer that question and let them know he was
- 25:57Speaker 1: really the end of things. Well, it was always him
- 26:00Speaker 1: and Liam that seemed like the only two that were
- 26:02Speaker 1: keen to actually do some kind of One Direction reunion.
- 26:06Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like any of the other members cared
- 26:08Speaker 1: about it. Yeah, because it sounds like Louis' relationship with
- 26:12Speaker 1: the other band members really dwindled since they split up.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Stephen Bartlett asked Louis if he had had conversations with
- 26:19Speaker 1: the guys about how they were coping post One Direction.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And Louis admitted that he'd only had those conversations with Liam.
- 26:26Speaker 1: He said, when he sees the other boys, it's deeper
- 26:29Speaker 1: than surface level conversations, but sometimes there is the element
- 26:33Speaker 1: of feeling like it's all a bit of small talk.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Whereas with Liam, he said he could speak on a
- 26:37Speaker 1: much deeper level. He said that Liam was almost like
- 26:40Speaker 1: a brother to him and he really loved him deeply.
- 26:42Speaker 1: I was wondering if that's because, not to be awful,
- 26:46Speaker 1: but in terms of success, Louis and Liam's solo careers
- 26:50Speaker 1: at that point were quite comparable. I mean, obviously Harry
- 26:53Speaker 1: Styles has done the best out of them, I'd say
- 26:56Speaker 1: followed by Zayn and then Niall. And maybe they felt
- 26:59Speaker 1: like they could be more open because there wasn't that
- 27:01Speaker 1: sort of competition. Well, Louis said he felt comfortable having
- 27:04Speaker 1: conversations with Liam about how much they missed the band.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Whereas He said that they would never want to say
- 27:09Speaker 1: that to the other guys because they were worried that
- 27:11Speaker 1: maybe they'd be like, ooh, things aren't going well in
- 27:13Speaker 1: their solo careers. I think it's that he didn't want
- 27:16Speaker 1: to be pitied by the more successful band members. And
- 27:19Speaker 1: it's clear that Louis has really struggled with comparing his
- 27:23Speaker 1: solo success to the days of One Direction. I mean,
- 27:26Speaker 1: he has recently released a number one album. He's got
- 27:29Speaker 1: a new single out, which surprised me. I want to
- 27:31Speaker 1: listen to the song Lemonade. Have you heard it? No,
- 27:34Speaker 1: I did want to have a listen after the interview.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Was it good? I hate to say it because I
- 27:38Speaker 1: really wanted to like it, but no, I didn't like it.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I'm hoping that there are stronger songs on his album.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Is this like a Taylor Swift album though, where you
- 27:46Speaker 1: first listen to the song and you're not really sure?
- 27:48Speaker 1: Could it grow on us? Maybe, maybe I need to
- 27:50Speaker 1: give it another go. Do you know what's crazy? The
- 27:52Speaker 1: day that we're recording this is actually a whole year
- 27:55Speaker 1: since Liam Payne passed away. And in this interview, Louis
- 28:00Speaker 1: revealed the moment he found out about Liam's passing and
- 28:03Speaker 1: So he said he was in his car in LA
- 28:05Speaker 1: and he had just dropped off his son, Freddie, at school.
- 28:08Speaker 1: And he was pulling back up when Niall rang him.
- 28:11Speaker 1: And he said, Niall said something along the lines of, ah, lads,
- 28:15Speaker 1: have you seen the news? I'm assuming that was a
- 28:17Speaker 1: four-way call. Yeah, well, Louis didn't actually touch on whether
- 28:20Speaker 1: it was, but it must have been. Because I kept
- 28:21Speaker 1: rewinding it to sit here if he said lad or lads. Yeah.
- 28:25Speaker 1: And Louis said as soon as Niall said those words,
- 28:27Speaker 1: he instantly said, knew what he meant because he said
- 28:30Speaker 1: he had been worried about Liam for quite some time.
- 28:33Speaker 1: And he actually had a similar feeling to when he
- 28:35Speaker 1: found out about his younger sister, Felicity's death of a
- 28:38Speaker 1: drug overdose, as you touched on Kate. And he said
- 28:40Speaker 1: that even though he tried to give his 150% to
- 28:44Speaker 1: Liam and his sister, it wasn't nearly enough. And that
- 28:47Speaker 1: sometimes he has this arrogance where he thinks maybe I
- 28:49Speaker 1: could have helped more, but what Liam was going through
- 28:52Speaker 1: was so much deeper than what he could have done
- 28:54Speaker 1: for him. It's sad to think that it wasn't such
- 28:57Speaker 1: a shock because obviously to all of us who don't
- 29:01Speaker 1: know Liam, we were absolutely floored by it, but it
- 29:04Speaker 1: does make you feel sick thinking about the fact that
- 29:07Speaker 1: it was quite obvious to his band members and his
- 29:09Speaker 1: friends that things weren't quite going right for him and that,
- 29:12Speaker 1: you know, that his minders and everything like that couldn't
- 29:15Speaker 1: have done more to help him. Well, I think there
- 29:16Speaker 1: were a few concerned people online because he was posting
- 29:19Speaker 1: some quite bizarre videos and he was also being ridiculed
- 29:23Speaker 1: for a lot of the content. Remember he was at
- 29:25Speaker 1: Niall's concert and people were putting up these mean TikToks
- 29:28Speaker 1: of him interacting with the crowds.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Well, Louis actually spoke about the trolling that Liam received
- 29:34Speaker 1: right before his death. And As you said, Amy, it
- 29:36Speaker 1: was after he attended niles concert in argentina let's have
- 29:40Speaker 1: a listen to what he said.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Take the tour thing for example and he's at the
- 29:44Speaker 2: tour show and people were people were making comments of
- 29:48Speaker 2: how much he was loving the attention on the surface
- 29:52Speaker 2: level that's someone who wants attention If you just look
- 29:54Speaker 2: a little bit deeper, that's someone who's just been in
- 29:56Speaker 2: the biggest band in the world and wants those situations again,
- 29:59Speaker 2: who hasn't had those live situations again and craves for them.
- 30:04Speaker 1: That made me really sad because I remember before he
- 30:07Speaker 1: passed away, seeing videos of him greeting fans outside of
- 30:10Speaker 1: his hotel and he said, was so personable with them
- 30:13Speaker 1: and really spent a lot of time with them. And,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I mean, you could tell he was really enjoying it,
- 30:18Speaker 1: which I think obviously people didn't like. People were like, oh,
- 30:21Speaker 1: he's just desperate for attention. Well, also when he was
- 30:23Speaker 1: at NARS Performance, he was standing on the sort of
- 30:27Speaker 1: podium of the VIP box he was in and everyone
- 30:30Speaker 1: was chanting and he was dancing and, as you said,
- 30:33Speaker 1: lapping up the attention. But as Louis put, well, if
- 30:36Speaker 1: your career isn't going as well as you'd like it
- 30:39Speaker 1: to go and you have– had success in the biggest
- 30:43Speaker 1: bands in the world, then of course you're going to
- 30:45Speaker 1: be craving a bit of that attention. Yeah, of course.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I mean, you're going to play into it. One of
- 30:49Speaker 1: the saddest parts of the interview for me was actually
- 30:51Speaker 1: when Louis was talking about how much Liam would have
- 30:55Speaker 1: valued his friendship with Stephen Bartlett. for some reason that
- 30:58Speaker 1: made me just feel so sad. Yeah. As if that
- 31:02Speaker 1: friendship was so special because Stephen's obviously very well known
- 31:04Speaker 1: in the business world. And even just the way Louis
- 31:07Speaker 1: spoke about how misunderstood Liam was, it really gave an
- 31:11Speaker 1: insight into like, it kind of made me think of
- 31:14Speaker 1: him as a Bambi type of character. Louis described him
- 31:17Speaker 1: as having puppy dog energy and said that he had
- 31:20Speaker 1: this huge desire to be liked. And Louis said he
- 31:24Speaker 1: wished if Liam could have truly seen how people perceived
- 31:27Speaker 1: him at the end and how brilliant he was because
- 31:29Speaker 1: he would have been absolutely shocked by the reaction. Louis
- 31:33Speaker 1: also said that losing Liam made him grieve the band again.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Let's have a listen to what he said.
- 31:41Speaker 2: There's now only three other people on the planet that
- 31:45Speaker 2: can deeply understand my professional journey. Like you never say never,
- 31:53Speaker 2: but never, like I just can't, i can't ever imagine
- 31:57Speaker 2: i'm not sure it would be right to him like
- 32:00Speaker 2: say say say sake of argument 25 years time it's
- 32:03Speaker 2: like a fucking oasis thing they offer us an arm
- 32:05Speaker 2: and a leg and they're like come back and do
- 32:07Speaker 2: this many shows i don't know yeah i think it
- 32:13Speaker 2: just it just completely put a pinning all that. And
- 32:17Speaker 2: the irony is there was no one campaigning for One
- 32:21Speaker 2: Direction to get back together more than Liam. And like,
- 32:24Speaker 2: I would say I came in a close second, actually,
- 32:26Speaker 2: like definitely.
- 32:29Speaker 1: It hurt my heart hearing how badly Liam had been
- 32:33Speaker 1: campaigning to get the band back together, because it would
- 32:35Speaker 1: have just been so epic. And Liam, when you listen
- 32:40Speaker 1: back to the songs, he was really the voice of
- 32:42Speaker 1: One Direction. So I can see how it would feel
- 32:46Speaker 1: wrong to do it without him. As much as I
- 32:48Speaker 1: would love to see a One Direction reunion, I just
- 32:50Speaker 1: don't think it would work. I love how Louis was like,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I mean, you know, if they chuck a bunch of
- 32:54Speaker 1: money at us, sure, we would have come back. But
- 32:57Speaker 1: now there's a bit of a, you know, a question
- 32:59Speaker 1: mark over it because, I mean, it would just be
- 33:02Speaker 1: incredibly sad. Well, that is all we have time for today.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us for this episode.
- 33:08Speaker 1: It was nice to have all three of us back
- 33:10Speaker 1: on board. This episode was recorded on the traditional land
- 33:13Speaker 1: of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We pay
- 33:16Speaker 1: respect to elders past and present.
