- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday and it is the 8th
- 0:16of January and you have tapped on play.
- 0:18Thanks for inviting me into your day because today it doesn't
- 0:21matter how good you are at long term planning or how good you
- 0:25think you are at long term planning.
- 0:27We are about to be humbled a little.
- 0:29A number of years ago I realised Sean you should really be better
- 0:32at long term thinking, not just short term thinking.
- 0:35So I got myself some bonsai trees and I thought ah you need
- 0:38to plan ahead and not just trim for the current season but think
- 0:42345678 seasons ahead as you trim the little bonsai to start
- 0:47growing it you know to the tree that you want it to become.
- 0:51My bonsai's are all dead, so that didn't work out for me.
- 0:55But when it comes to planning ahead, as we heard on Monday
- 0:58this week, it had been 480 years since God had rescued Israel
- 1:05from the land of Egypt. And today the Ark of the
- 1:09Covenant is brought into the temple.
- 1:13This is such a big deal because from the very beginning the Ark
- 1:16of the Covenant was kind of like the physical representation of
- 1:20God's presence with His people. And that was always this mobile
- 1:24thing as these itinerant people moved around.
- 1:27But today God has said you are my people and this is your place
- 1:31and I will be in that place with you.
- 1:35So it is the end of this long journey as they have now
- 1:38inhabited this land that God gave them.
- 1:41So this is a monumentous occasion as the temple is
- 1:45dedicated and the ark brought to the temple.
- 1:48So let us read this story together as all of this plays
- 1:52out in First Kings chapter 8. Solomon then summoned to
- 2:07Jerusalem the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes,
- 2:11the leaders of the ancestral families of the Israelites.
- 2:15They were to bring the Ark of the Lord's Covenant to the
- 2:18Temple from its location in the city of David, also known as
- 2:22Zion. So all the men of Israel
- 2:25assembled before King Solomon at the annual festival of shelters,
- 2:29which is held in the early autumn in the month of Ethanim.
- 2:33When all the elders of Israel arrived, the priests picked up
- 2:36the ark. The priests and Levites brought
- 2:39up the Ark of the Lord, along with the special tent and all
- 2:42the sacred items that had been in it.
- 2:45There before the ark, King Solomon and the entire community
- 2:50of Israel sacrificed so many sheep, goats, and cattle that no
- 2:55one could keep count. Then the priests carried the Ark
- 2:58of the Lord's Covenant into the inner sanctuary of the Temple,
- 3:03the Most Holy Place, and placed it beneath the wings of the
- 3:06cherubim. The cherubim spread their wings
- 3:09over the ark, forming a canopy over the ark and it's carrying
- 3:13poles. These poles were so long that
- 3:16their ends could be seen from the Holy Place, which is in
- 3:19front of the Most Holy Place, but not from the outside.
- 3:23They are still there to this day.
- 3:26Nothing was in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses
- 3:29had placed in it at Mount Sinai, where the Lord made a covenant
- 3:34with the people of Israel when they left the land of Egypt.
- 3:37When the priests came out of the holy Place, a thick cloud filled
- 3:42the temple of the Lord. The priests could not continue
- 3:45their service because of the cloud, for the glorious presence
- 3:48of the Lord filled the temple of the Lord.
- 3:51Then Solomon prayed. O Lord, you have said that you
- 3:56would live in a thick cloud of darkness.
- 3:59Now I have built a glorious temple for you, a place where
- 4:02you can live forever. Then the king turned around to
- 4:06the entire community of Israel standing before him and gave
- 4:10this blessing. Praise the Lord the God of
- 4:13Israel, who has kept the promise he made to my father David.
- 4:18For he told my father, from the day I brought my people Israel
- 4:22out of Egypt, I have never chosen a city among any of the
- 4:26tribes of Israel as the place where a temple should be built
- 4:29to honour my name, but I have chosen David to be king over my
- 4:34people Israel. Then Solomon said, my father
- 4:39David wanted to build this temple to honour the name of the
- 4:42Lord, the God of Israel. But the Lord told him, you
- 4:46wanted to build the temple to honour my name.
- 4:49Your intention is good, but you are not the one to do it.
- 4:53One of your sons will build the temple to honour me.
- 4:56And now the Lord has fulfilled the promise he made, for I have
- 5:01become king in my father's place, and now I sit on the
- 5:05throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised.
- 5:08I have built this temple to honour the name of the Lord, the
- 5:11God of Israel, and I have prepared a place there for the
- 5:15ark which contains the covenant that the Lord made with our
- 5:18ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.
- 5:22Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in front of
- 5:25the entire community of Israel. He lifted his hands toward
- 5:29heaven and he prayed. O Lord God of Israel, there is
- 5:35no God like you in all of heaven above or on the earth below you
- 5:41keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk
- 5:45before you. In whole hearted devotion.
- 5:48You have kept your promise to your servant David, my Father.
- 5:51You have made that promise with your own mouth and with your own
- 5:56hands. You have fulfilled it to day.
- 5:59And now, O Lord God of Israel, carry out the additional
- 6:03promises you made to your servant David my father.
- 6:07For you said to him, if your descendants guard their
- 6:10behaviour and faithfully follow me as you have done, one of them
- 6:15will always sit on the throne of Israel.
- 6:18Now, O God of Israel, fulfil this promise to your servant
- 6:22David, my father. But will God really live on
- 6:26earth? Why even the highest heaven
- 6:29cannot contain you? How much less this temple I have
- 6:32built? Nevertheless, listen to my
- 6:35prayer and my plea. O Lord, my God, hear the cry and
- 6:40the prayer that your servant is making to you today.
- 6:43May you watch over this temple night and day.
- 6:47This place where you have said My name will be there.
- 6:51May you always hear the prayers I make toward this place.
- 6:55May you hear the humble and earnest requests from me and
- 6:58your people, Israel, when we pray toward this place.
- 7:02Yes, hear us from heaven where you live, and when you hear,
- 7:06forgive. If someone wrongs another person
- 7:10and is required to take an oath of innocence in front of your
- 7:13altar in this temple, then hear from heaven and judge between
- 7:17your servants, the accuser and the accused.
- 7:20Punish the guilty as they deserve, acquit the innocent
- 7:24because of their innocence. If your people Israel are
- 7:28defeated by their enemies because they have sinned against
- 7:31you, and if they turn to you and acknowledge your name and pray
- 7:34to you here in this temple, then hear from heaven and forgive the
- 7:39sin of your people Israel, and return them to this land you
- 7:42gave their ancestors. If the skies are shut up and
- 7:47there is no rain because your people have sinned against you,
- 7:50and if they pray to all this temple and acknowledge your name
- 7:53and turn from their sins because you have punished them, then
- 7:57hear from heaven and forgive the sins of your servants, your
- 8:01people Israel. Teach them to follow the right
- 8:04path and send rain on your land that you have given to your
- 8:08people as their special possession.
- 8:11If there is famine in the land, or a plague or crop disease, or
- 8:15a tax of locusts or caterpillars, or if your
- 8:18people's enemies are in the land besieging their towns, whatever
- 8:22disaster or disease there is, and if your people, Israel, pray
- 8:26about their troubles, raising their hands toward this temple,
- 8:30then hear from heaven where you live and forgive.
- 8:35Give your people what their actions deserve, for you alone
- 8:39know each human heart. Then they will fear you as long
- 8:43as they live in the land you gave to our ancestors.
- 8:47In the future, foreigners who do not belong to your people,
- 8:51Israel, will hear of you. They will come from distant
- 8:54lands because of your name. For they will hear of your great
- 8:58name and your strong hand and your powerful arm.
- 9:02And when they pray toward this temple, then hear from heaven
- 9:06where you live, and grant what they ask of you.
- 9:10In this way all the people of the earth will come to know and
- 9:13fear you, just as your own people, Israel, do.
- 9:17They too will know that this temple I have built honours your
- 9:22name. If your people go out where you
- 9:25send them to fight their enemies, and if they pray to the
- 9:28Lord by turning toward this city you have chosen and toward this
- 9:32temple I have built to honour your name, then hear their
- 9:36prayers from heaven and uphold their cause.
- 9:41If they sin against you, and who has never sinned, you might
- 9:46become angry with them and let their enemies conquer them and
- 9:49take them captive to their land far away or near.
- 9:54But in that land of exile they might turn to you in repentance
- 9:58and pray. We have sinned, done evil, and
- 10:01acted wickedly. If they turn to you with their
- 10:05whole heart and soul in the land of their enemies, and pray
- 10:09toward the land you gave to their ancestors, toward this
- 10:12city you have chosen, toward this temple I have built to
- 10:15honour your name, then hear their prayers and their petition
- 10:20from heaven where you live, and uphold their cause.
- 10:24Forgive your people who have sinned against you.
- 10:27Forgive all the offences they have committed against you.
- 10:31Make their captors merciful to them, for they are your people,
- 10:35Your special possession, whom you brought out of the iron
- 10:39smelting furnace of Egypt. May your eyes be open to my
- 10:44requests and to the requests of your people Israel.
- 10:48May you hear and answer them whenever they cry out to you.
- 10:52And when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt, O
- 10:56sovereign Lord, you told your servant Moses that you had set
- 11:00Israel apart from all the nations of the earth to be your
- 11:04own special possession. When Solomon finished making
- 11:09these prayers and petitions to the Lord, he stood up in front
- 11:13of the altar of the Lord, where he had been kneeling with his
- 11:16hands raised toward heaven. He stood and in a loud voice
- 11:20blessed the entire congregation of Israel.
- 11:24Praise the Lord who has given rest to His people, Israel, just
- 11:29as He promised. Not one word has failed of all
- 11:32the wonderful promises He gave through His servant Moses.
- 11:36May the Lord our God be with us as He was with our ancestors.
- 11:42May He never leave us or abandoned us.
- 11:45May He give us the desire to do His will in everything and obey
- 11:50all the commands, decrees, and regulations that He gave our
- 11:53ancestors. And may these words that I have
- 11:57prayed in the presence of the Lord be before Him constantly,
- 12:01day and night, so that the Lord our God may give justice to me
- 12:07and to His people Israel, according to each day's needs.
- 12:12Then people all over the earth will know that the Lord alone is
- 12:16God and there is no other. And may you be completely
- 12:21faithful to the Lord our God. May you always obey His decrees
- 12:25and commands, just as you are doing today.
- 12:30Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices to
- 12:34the Lord. Solomon offered to the Lord a
- 12:37peace offering of 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep and goats.
- 12:44And so the king and all the people of Israel dedicated the
- 12:47temple of the Lord. That same day, the king
- 12:50consecrated the central area of the courtyard in front of the
- 12:54Lord's temple. He offered burnt offerings,
- 12:57grain offerings, and the fat of peace offerings there, because
- 13:01the bronze altar in the Lord's presence was too small to hold
- 13:04all the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and the fat of the
- 13:08peace offerings. Then Solomon and all Israel
- 13:13celebrated the festival of shelters in the presence of the
- 13:16Lord our God. A large congregation had
- 13:19gathered from as far away as Lebo Hamath in the north and the
- 13:24brook of Egypt in the South. The celebration went on for 14
- 13:28days in all, seven days for the dedication of the altar and
- 13:33seven days for the festival of shelters.
- 13:35After the festival was over, Solomon sent the people home.
- 13:40They blessed the king and went to their homes, joyful and glad
- 13:45because the Lord had been good to his servant David and to his
- 13:49people Israel. Our Lord, thank you that it is
- 14:03through Jesus, ultimately, that Solomon's prayer has been
- 14:07answered in that when we turn away, when we make mistakes, and
- 14:14then turn our hearts back to you, you forgive us.
- 14:19You draw us back into your presence, and you are able to do
- 14:23that because of what Jesus has done our Lord here.
- 14:28Even at the beginning of this incredible journey with your
- 14:31people in their homeland, with you, their present as their God,
- 14:35with them, you foreshadow this incredible gift that will be not
- 14:39just for your people, Israel, but for all of your people,
- 14:43everyone who believes in Jesus and what he has done for us.
- 14:49Thank you that your plans don't just span 480 years, but they
- 14:54span thousands of years all the way through to eternity before
- 14:58us. You are a great big God, unable
- 15:03to be contained by this incredible vision of a temple,
- 15:08but that it would remind people of the glory of your name.
- 15:13And so we acknowledge and raise our arms in worship to the glory
- 15:19of your name, our incredible God, and we praise you, and we
- 15:24live for you, and we are grateful for all you have done
- 15:28for us and for the gift of Jesus, in whose name we pray all
- 15:32of these things. Amen.
