- 0:00Speaker 1: All smile so far in the bilateral This is Trump
- 0:02Speaker 1: and She in Beijing.
- 0:04Speaker 2: You're a great leader. I say it to everybody, You're
- 0:06Speaker 2: a great leader.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Sometimes people don't like me saying it, but I say
- 0:09Speaker 3: it anyway. The whole world is watching our meeting. Currently,
- 0:13Speaker 3: transformation not seen in a century is accelerating across the globe,
- 0:18Speaker 3: and the international situation is fluid and turbulent. The world
- 0:22Speaker 3: has come to a new crossroads. Can China and the
- 0:26Speaker 3: United States overcome the Fuciddy's trap now?
- 0:30Speaker 1: As we mentioned earlier, Taiwan is the big issue for
- 0:33Speaker 1: China and a firefield. Asia Pacific expert former Washington Post
- 0:36Speaker 1: Asia Pacific editor with me live this morning and a
- 0:38Speaker 1: good morning, Good morning Ryan. Any missteps so far or
- 0:43Speaker 1: is it basically all to plan and all sticking to
- 0:45Speaker 1: their lines.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Well, I think the biggest missteps so far is actually
- 0:50Speaker 2: an emission, and that is that she didn Pin came
- 0:54Speaker 2: out with some very strong language on Taiwan, saying that
- 0:57Speaker 2: if this issue was missing managed, that it could lead
- 1:01Speaker 2: to a clash. Taiwan is a democratic island exists separately
- 1:07Speaker 2: from mainland China, but China and Shijinping in particular want
- 1:11Speaker 2: to take control of it. And usually when China has
- 1:14Speaker 2: said something like this, the American president has pushed back.
- 1:18Speaker 2: That is something that Joe Biden did, but Trump said
- 1:21Speaker 2: nothing at all. He pretended he hadn't heard the comments
- 1:23Speaker 2: and moved on. And so that's causing a lot of
- 1:26Speaker 2: worry in Taiwan overnight as people think that as Trump
- 1:30Speaker 2: moving the dial on Taiwan and something less willing for
- 1:33Speaker 2: the US to defend them or back them up.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Now they both agree that the straight up for Moses
- 1:38Speaker 1: got to open up. Obviously that's in everybody's interest, but
- 1:41Speaker 1: did they talk about how.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Not.
- 1:44Speaker 2: As far as we know, they didn't say that. They
- 1:46Speaker 2: both had that interest. And the US basically went to
- 1:50Speaker 2: this summit's desperate for China to help to use its
- 1:54Speaker 2: leverage over Iran, but there have been no details whatsoever
- 1:58Speaker 2: on what Iran might actually be willing to do. That's
- 2:02Speaker 2: kind of the nitty gritty that we wouldn't expect to
- 2:04Speaker 2: see in the readout from the meeting. But over the
- 2:07Speaker 2: next few days, I guess we'll see just how far
- 2:10Speaker 2: China is willing to help the US clean up its
- 2:13Speaker 2: mess in the Middle East.
