Latest / Coaches Corner / Luke Murray - Postgame Butler
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We're going over some of the stats. As Loup Murray,
- 0:02Speaker 1: the UKON assistant, joins us, that one was that was
- 0:08Speaker 1: a thriller. This is what that was. That was a thriller.
- 0:10Speaker 1: And it's always better when you win.
- 0:12Speaker 2: It's a lot better when you win. Yeah, it really was.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I mean credit to Butler, you know, they made it
- 0:16Speaker 2: really interesting there. You know, we didn't do a good
- 0:19Speaker 2: enough job at Garden Tell four. You know, it's a
- 0:21Speaker 2: pretty straightforward deal with him, and obviously he's really physical
- 0:24Speaker 2: and he wants to get back to his right hand
- 0:25Speaker 2: on his drives. And I thought in the first half
- 0:27Speaker 2: we did a really good job. In the second half,
- 0:28Speaker 2: we just didn't show enough kind of physicality and toughness
- 0:32Speaker 2: to win some of those one on one battles. We
- 0:34Speaker 2: tried to bring a second defender there. But all in all,
- 0:37Speaker 2: proud of the guys for fighting and finding a way.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that game, you know, it's one of those games
- 0:41Speaker 1: where the other team, and this happens in basketball a lot,
- 0:45Speaker 1: the other team doesn't have a lead the whole game.
- 0:47Speaker 1: All of a sudden they get a lead by one
- 0:48Speaker 1: or whatever it was, and it could just go south
- 0:51Speaker 1: on you. But it didn't. Happen. I credit Youukhon's you know,
- 0:54Speaker 1: staff and the players for hanging in because that could
- 0:57Speaker 1: have that could have caved in on you.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I think it did. I think it did go south.
- 1:02Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean ultimately got the win. But yeah,
- 1:04Speaker 2: I mean I think you know, we talk about it
- 1:06Speaker 2: in the locker room. Just now. You know, we're up
- 1:07Speaker 2: fifteen in the first half, you know, made some defensive mistakes,
- 1:11Speaker 2: weren't able to secure some rebounds, and all of a sudden,
- 1:14Speaker 2: fifteen become six. We go into the half up eight.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I think we're in a pretty good spot. Midway through
- 1:19Speaker 2: the second half, up eight. You know, Landon Moore, who's
- 1:22Speaker 2: their fifth starter or fifth you know, kind of offensive
- 1:25Speaker 2: threat on the floor at that time, drives Jalalen twice,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know, back to back fouls. Now it's four Bizjack
- 1:30Speaker 2: banks in the three. Now it's one. You know, So
- 1:32Speaker 2: some of those things happen and all of a sudden,
- 1:34Speaker 2: the lead kind of evaporates, and you know, credit to
- 1:36Speaker 2: the guys for stepping up and finding a way.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and you've had to do that a bunch. Now,
- 1:40Speaker 1: I've had I think nine close games this year, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 1: five or less points games, decided by one or two possessions.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I talked to Dan about this before the game, and
- 1:49Speaker 1: can this help you going down to stretch. I mean,
- 1:51Speaker 1: you've got these games to play in the Big East
- 1:53Speaker 1: Conference on the road, then you got the Big East Tournament,
- 1:55Speaker 1: then you got the NCAA Tournament. You're gonna see a
- 1:57Speaker 1: lot of these close games.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know how much it helps, honestly. I mean, like,
- 2:02Speaker 2: you know, last year seemed just fine, and yeah, we'll
- 2:03Speaker 2: take a close one. So yeah, I mean I guess
- 2:06Speaker 2: there's something to be learned from it, you know, the
- 2:08Speaker 2: ability to kind of fight through some adversity, you know.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And again, I think a lot of guys stepped up
- 2:12Speaker 2: in big moments. You know, Samson I thought did some
- 2:14Speaker 2: really good things down the stretch, Solo made some huge shots,
- 2:17Speaker 2: Terrace Reied had some timely buckets. But all in all,
- 2:20Speaker 2: I think we want to play a lot better. But
- 2:21Speaker 2: you know, Butler's better than their record. They've got some
- 2:24Speaker 2: really good wins. Beat Mississippi State early in the season,
- 2:26Speaker 2: beat Northwestern earlier in the season, and every game in conference,
- 2:29Speaker 2: with the exception of the game at Providence, has been
- 2:31Speaker 2: like this. You know, they've been one or two possession games.
- 2:33Speaker 2: So you know, with Liam out, we're going to have
- 2:36Speaker 2: to scrap and find a way. All these biggest games
- 2:37Speaker 2: are gonna be really hard.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, there's strengths of schedules twenty two, so they played
- 2:41Speaker 1: some quality of opponents, there's no question about it. How
- 2:44Speaker 1: about solo ball and I was a sophomore before we
- 2:46Speaker 1: get the caravan. You know, here's a guy that's got
- 2:48Speaker 1: to make a lot of shots for you, and he
- 2:50Speaker 1: does it most nights for a supper. But that's a
- 2:53Speaker 1: that's a great quality.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. I mean he's a big time shooter,
- 2:56Speaker 2: you know. I know coach Early talked about it a
- 2:57Speaker 2: lot last year, and I think the fans and some
- 2:59Speaker 2: of the media were kind of like, you know, really,
- 3:01Speaker 2: he's really that good a shooter because this percentage wasn't
- 3:04Speaker 2: really indicating it for the majority of last season. But
- 3:06Speaker 2: he is. I mean, he's one of the best shooters
- 3:08Speaker 2: in the country. You know, he's shooting well over forty
- 3:11Speaker 2: percent from three and makes a lot of tough ones,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and so yeah, he stepped up and made some huge
- 3:15Speaker 2: ones at three that he made you know late probably
- 3:17Speaker 2: sealed the game for so uh. Credit to him, and
- 3:20Speaker 2: you know he's continuing to work to get better defensively.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And Caravan, who was here with us on the postgame
- 3:24Speaker 1: show talking about his ankle, be honest, what's it feel like?
- 3:28Speaker 1: He said, it hurts, and he goes forty minutes for
- 3:31Speaker 1: you and he had to have. You had to have
- 3:33Speaker 1: forty minutes from that guy. I mean, you talk about
- 3:35Speaker 1: winning DNA, I mean that that is a perfect example.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, and he went for it. You know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: I think we talked to him a lot about the
- 3:41Speaker 2: Creton game and felt like he was way too passive
- 3:43Speaker 2: in that game. You know, only took three shots in
- 3:45Speaker 2: the first half, and you know it wasn't as aggressive
- 3:47Speaker 2: as he needed to be. I thought he came out
- 3:49Speaker 2: pretty aggressive today, took some shots early in the clock,
- 3:52Speaker 2: which is what we wanted from him. In battle, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: battled to the end. You know, nineteen points, he's six assists,
- 3:57Speaker 2: seven rebounds, three blocks, you know, pretty good all round game.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I thought for the first you know, thirty minutes or so,
- 4:02Speaker 2: did a nice job on telfort two. They were high
- 4:04Speaker 2: school teammates, so he knows them well. But yeah, no,
- 4:07Speaker 2: I can't say enough good things about any.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Kay and your defense. First half I thought was solid
- 4:11Speaker 1: forty one percent by them eleven of twenty seven. Second
- 4:14Speaker 1: half not so much. What are you seeing on the
- 4:16Speaker 1: defensive side? Are the huskies of these young guys like
- 4:19Speaker 1: the Jalen Stewards, the Jaydon ross Is, you know, guys
- 4:22Speaker 1: like that. Are they learning this game at this level
- 4:24Speaker 1: as we go game to game or what? Do you think?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Not as much as they should be. I mean, yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 2: I mean I thought for the majority of our first half,
- 4:31Speaker 2: our defense was in the mid thirties, you know, field
- 4:33Speaker 2: goal defense. We were holding them to about one point
- 4:36Speaker 2: eight one point nine points per possession for most of
- 4:39Speaker 2: the first half and gave up a couple buckets late
- 4:42Speaker 2: to end the half. And then in the second half,
- 4:44Speaker 2: I just thought we really lost our discipline. You know.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It started with inability and it excuse me, an inability
- 4:50Speaker 2: to keep Telford away from his right hand. Biz Jack
- 4:53Speaker 2: got going, you know, and it's just it's right now.
- 4:55Speaker 2: We got we got to get it right. We got
- 4:57Speaker 2: to do a much better job of playing without fouling.
- 4:58Speaker 2: It feels like we're getting doubled up at the free
- 5:00Speaker 2: throw line every game. You know, we got some guys
- 5:03Speaker 2: that aren't necessarily the greatest individual defenders right now, and
- 5:06Speaker 2: they got to show growth.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah, the Froul line is another item, and the nineteen
- 5:10Speaker 1: of twenty eight that actually got them back in it.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You know, the clock stops, they're able to score with
- 5:15Speaker 1: no one guarding them. You guys made some free throws,
- 5:18Speaker 1: obviously that meant something down the stretch. But the free
- 5:21Speaker 1: throw discrepancy, the disparity. Is that something you can coach
- 5:25Speaker 1: and change or is that something that the players on
- 5:27Speaker 1: the floor have to figure out.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I think the players on the floor have to figure
- 5:31Speaker 2: it out, you know, for the most part. You know,
- 5:32Speaker 2: I mentioned the fouls on back to back positions by
- 5:35Speaker 2: Jalen guarding more, you know, I thought that got him
- 5:37Speaker 2: going a little bit, got them back into the game
- 5:39Speaker 2: without the clock running.
- 5:41Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Our team is a jump shooting team on offense for
- 5:43Speaker 2: the most part, you know, And so when we do
- 5:45Speaker 2: try to throw the ball inside the terrace, we can
- 5:47Speaker 2: get a little bit more rim pressure. I think we're
- 5:49Speaker 2: encouraging these guys to drive the ball a little bit more,
- 5:51Speaker 2: you know, But we have to kind of play to
- 5:54Speaker 2: our strengths offensively. But we got to try to find
- 5:56Speaker 2: a way to even it up, and that means, you know,
- 5:59Speaker 2: playing better, playing more disciplined, guarding the ball better, playing
- 6:03Speaker 2: better post defense. And then offensively, you know, the last
- 6:06Speaker 2: couple of years we've been a top five offensive rebounding
- 6:08Speaker 2: team in the country, and this year's team does not
- 6:10Speaker 2: offensive rebound at that rate. And I think if we
- 6:12Speaker 2: can get more second shots, we'll put ourselves in a
- 6:14Speaker 2: position to get foul.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah, all lists without McNeely. We're obviously missed five games
- 6:18Speaker 1: three and two without him. He does a lot of things. Well,
- 6:21Speaker 1: can can this whole experience without one of your better
- 6:24Speaker 1: players payoff somehow as the season progresses?
- 6:28Speaker 2: That I think for sure. I mean, Jalen Stewart playing
- 6:30Speaker 2: thirty three minutes, you know in a game, if Liam's
- 6:33Speaker 2: out there, it's probably not that, you know, Jay Ross
- 6:35Speaker 2: playing almost seventeen minutes. It's maybe not that you know
- 6:38Speaker 2: Solo's forty minutes. It's not that if Liam's there. So, yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 2: I think these guys are getting valuable experience, and I thought, hopefully,
- 6:44Speaker 2: you know, they're improving as a result of it. But
- 6:47Speaker 2: you know, I know coach has said it a few times,
- 6:49Speaker 2: you know, and it's sort of his media opportunities. Liam's
- 6:51Speaker 2: really good, like really good. And it's not even just
- 6:54Speaker 2: what he does individually, it's how much easier he makes
- 6:56Speaker 2: the game for Samson and Terris and Alex and these
- 6:58Speaker 2: other guys, and so you know, we're really excited to
- 7:01Speaker 2: get him back whenever that time is all.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Right, well, good job, always good to win. Winning trumps
- 7:06Speaker 1: everything as far as I know.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yes, that's absolutely true.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Thanks Mike for once I got something right, all right,
- 7:13Speaker 1: thanks to Little Murray. Appreciate you.
