- 0:07Well, it's up everyone. Welcome to the state in Philly
- 0:09sports history for July 4th, 2023.
- 0:12I'm your host, Jim Montgomery. It is Tuesday.
- 0:16It's also the 4th of July. So happy 4th of July.
- 0:20Happy birthday America. Going to slightly revisit
- 0:24something we did back when we first started the Tuesday
- 0:27motivation slash positivity when we all seem to come together.
- 0:31When DeMar Hamlin had his cardiac episode on the field
- 0:35during the Buffalo game and just say on 4th of July and we need
- 0:40to be better, just better as people, better as a country.
- 0:46Listen, we're not the perfect country from top to bottom there
- 0:50we we've all. We we have areas of which we can
- 0:54grow, but I think the one thing that will help just us all get
- 0:58better as a country and better as people is just be more open
- 1:03and listen. I think the fact that you can't
- 1:07really have a different opinion anymore without somebody telling
- 1:12you how evil you are and you're a horrible person.
- 1:14This, that, and the other. Let's just be better than that.
- 1:17Just take a minute. Listen.
- 1:18Celebrate the differences. Celebrate the fact that, hey, we
- 1:23don't all have to believe the same thing.
- 1:25We shouldn't. And we live in a country where
- 1:26we're able to believe different things.
- 1:28So on 4th of July, just kind of think about that.
- 1:32Do your best to try to understand someone who's
- 1:34different than you, celebrate their differences, and just be
- 1:37more open. Everybody wants to talk.
- 1:40Nobody wants to listen. Just listen to your neighbor.
- 1:42Listen to. The people in your community who
- 1:45are different than you maybe have might have a better
- 1:48understanding of them and not be so, so angry and hateful toward
- 1:52them. So that is my ask of you on the
- 1:554th of July is to just listen and be respectful and try to
- 2:00learn something about your neighbor.
- 2:02All right, let's get into today's episode.
- 2:07Lots going on today, so let's let's get right into it.
- 2:11Phillies are in Tampa Bay this week.
- 2:12Good measuring stick. Love to see them take two out of
- 2:16three. But Tampa Bay is the best team
- 2:18right now other than the Braves in the major leagues, so let's
- 2:24see how that goes. Flyers update they signed
- 2:27veteran Mark Stall to A1 year deal.
- 2:30He has experience playing under Tortorella.
- 2:33He just was in the Stanley Cup last year with Florida.
- 2:36He adds a veteran present for presence for some of these young
- 2:40guys, it was kind of Danny Bear said.
- 2:43He was shocked that they were able to sign him.
- 2:46But I think this is a good no risk signing and it will help
- 2:50provide some of that leadership for the guys in the locker room.
- 2:54Sixers update. I'm going to miss Bang Bang
- 2:59George Neang, but he's going to the Cavs.
- 3:02I did see that. Apparently now Maxi is
- 3:05untouchable in any trade. So that's your daily as the hard
- 3:10turns update, Tyrese Maxi will not be involved in any trades.
- 3:15At least this is what the reports are.
- 3:18Who knows? He could, but we'll see.
- 3:22And it does seem that both sides.
- 3:26Harden and the Sixers are willing to just kind of let him
- 3:28sit. The Sixers aren't going to do
- 3:31anything dumb to to hurt their team.
- 3:34Knock on wood. Hopefully that that stays that
- 3:36way. But I like it.
- 3:38I mean, and unintentionally, I saw an article.
- 3:42I forget who read. I think it was from the
- 3:43Inquirer. Basically the article was saying
- 3:47the same thing we I've been saying here.
- 3:49Like, if he does sit out, that's probably even an added bonus
- 3:52because now you're getting the the.
- 3:54Unintentional tank and hopefully maybe getting a new draft pick.
- 3:58So Sixers are in a good spot with that.
- 4:02Let's see how it it plays out. Maybe they can actually trade
- 4:08Tobias if Harden's going to sit out and really get that
- 4:11unintentional tank. But.
- 4:13More updates as they come on as the hardened turns though.
- 4:18Quick Eagles thing. This story is never ending.
- 4:22Now the NFL is blaming the Chiefs and Eagles players for
- 4:27the field being so slippery, saying that they didn't wear the
- 4:29right cleats. I read an article if you're
- 4:32interested in it. I think it was from Yahoo Sports
- 4:34and basically just debunked this whole thing.
- 4:38But that's the NFL stance and. Not shocked that the NFL is
- 4:42saying, hey, we didn't do anything wrong, but more again,
- 4:47hopefully we can get into more football stories and get over
- 4:50the field in the Super Bowl. That happened in February that
- 4:52we're all over, but it just seems like it.
- 4:55Stories for this keeps resurfacing and resurfacing.
- 4:57All right, so today we're going to go back to 1979, and it was
- 5:03not the best of days for the Phillies.
- 5:06Despite beating the Mets one to nothing, Steve Carlton pitched a
- 5:09complete game. He had one hit.
- 5:12He gave up a double to Elliot Maddox in the 7th.
- 5:15Retired his 1st 19 batters. Really was struggling be coming
- 5:19into the game but did some tweaks.
- 5:21I read and this was the result almost through a perfect game.
- 5:25No hitter. But the rest of the starting
- 5:28pitching staff for the Phillies did not have such great news.
- 5:33Three. That's right, three of their
- 5:35starters were placed on the DL on that day.
- 5:38Larry Christian Christiansen had been struggling with a pulled
- 5:41groin that just wasn't getting better.
- 5:44Dick Ruthman had an elbow injury again and it just wasn't getting
- 5:48better. And then Randy Lurch broke his
- 5:50thumb in a fight at a bar in Philly.
- 5:54So three of your 4 starters were out, and after winning three
- 5:59straight and all these titles, the Phillies did take a step
- 6:03back in 79. That was the year they got Pete
- 6:05Rose. That they would eventually, in
- 6:081979, get as close as two games back.
- 6:11I think I was in about July, but they just kind of faltered down
- 6:15the stretch. They ended up going 84 and 7814
- 6:19games back, fourth place in the NLE.
- 6:23The Pirates won it that year, but help was on the way.
- 6:27The next year they, I shouldn't say help.
- 6:29Help was there with Pete Rose. But the next year, obviously
- 6:33they went and won the World Series.
- 6:34But on this day, Steve Carlton almost pitched the perfect game,
- 6:39giving up the double in the 7th to to break that up in a one
- 6:43nothing Phillies win over the Mets.
- 6:45But the news was bad for the starters.
- 6:48Christensen, Ruthman and Lurch all on the DL for various
- 6:53injuries. Lurch.
- 6:54The most annoying because he broke his hand in a bar fight.
- 6:59All right. Want to celebrate the Phillies?
- 7:01Want to celebrate the Sixers, Flyers, Union Eagles?
- 7:07Whatever team you want to celebrate, go do some 4th of

- 7:34You can do that phillygoat.com You won't be disappointed.
- 7:38Use the promo code Jim Montgomery for 10% off of your
- 7:41order. All right, it is time for
- 7:45today's matchup in the Philly Sports Lovable Loser Tournament.
- 7:51But before we move on. What a game this tournament. 3
- 7:56days in and the games have all been great.
- 7:58Yesterday's matchup in the Phillies regional was the 93
- 8:01team, the number two seed versus the 2011 seed, the OR the
- 8:07seventh seed? The 2011 team?
- 8:09I should say so. I didn't not give the What If
- 8:13Sports matchup yesterday completely forgot.
- 8:17That literally went five and five, and they played at the
- 8:20Astrodome, alternated who was the home team.
- 8:23They went five and five. I played one last game for like
- 8:27the tiebreaker. The 2011 team won.
- 8:30So then I turned it over to you guys and the vote came in Split
- 8:355050, the 2000. That the 93 team got off to a
- 8:40hot start. The 2011 team battled back with
- 8:43the votes and had a slim lead. When I went to bed last night I
- 8:47woke up. It was tied.
- 8:49So the only way I could decide to do the tiebreaker was to do
- 8:53A7 game series on what if sports where each team played at their
- 8:58home stadium. So the 93 team was the higher
- 9:00seed. They've had the home field
- 9:02advantage at the vet 2011 played at Citizens Bank Park.
- 9:07And and again, and I rotated through the pitching stabs and
- 9:10in a very, very competitive series, these two teams were
- 9:13evenly matched. It went three to three.
- 9:19It was three games to three going into game seven, all every
- 9:23single game. The first six games the away
- 9:24team won. So if the everything held true
- 9:28in game seven, it would have been the same thing.
- 9:33But the 93 team won easily. Excuse me, I'm not sure if it's
- 9:40allergies. I'm getting sick or what, but I
- 9:42apologize for that. But in game seven, the 93 team
- 9:45won five to two to win that series.
- 9:48So the 93 Phillies are moving on to the second round, but what a
- 9:53battle that was all day I was going back and forth.
- 9:56It's it's fun for me to see where the votes are coming in
- 9:58from and just seeing who's voting for what.
- 10:01But ma'am, what a series, the 93 team.
- 10:05Just like they were in real life, the scrappy team pulled it
- 10:07out against probably the the better team on paper, but good
- 10:14series moving on. All right, So it's time for our
- 10:18first game in the Sixers Regional, and today we're going
- 10:21to go with a very, very big fan favorite.
- 10:23We're the number three seed. The 2000, 2001 team is taking on
- 10:28the number six seed, the 198586 team.
- 10:32So remember that 2000, 2001 Sixers team. 56 and 26 #1 seed
- 10:37overall a I was the MVP just completely captivated the
- 10:42region. They got over the hump, finally
- 10:45beat the Pacers and they had two epic series against the Raptors
- 10:49and Bucks to get to the NBA Finals.
- 10:52They stole game one against the Lakers and it was just insanity.
- 10:57It was such a fun experience to be a part of.
- 11:01They had the Coach of the Year, the MVP, the Defensive Player of
- 11:03the Year, and the 6th Man of the Year.
- 11:06We all know and love that team. All right, the 8586 team, They
- 11:11went 54 and 28. They were the third seed behind
- 11:14the Bucks and Boston. They beat the Bullets in the
- 11:18first round, but they did so without Moses Malone, who had
- 11:22the orbital fracture. And then?
- 11:25They went seven games against the Bucs, who they had beaten in
- 11:28818283 and 85. So we talked about this before
- 11:32the Bucs finally got their revenge.
- 11:34But a young Charles Barkley stepped up and really became a
- 11:37star, minus Moses Malone. So he was all NBA second team
- 11:42that year. Mo Cheeks was all defensive
- 11:45first team. And going into that, at the end
- 11:48of this season, hopes were high because they had Moses, they had
- 11:51the number one pick going in, Barkley was coming on.
- 11:54You had an aging Dr. J, but things were looking pretty good.
- 11:59And then we've talked about it. Go check out the Back to the
- 12:02Future episode where we discussed the 86 offseason.
- 12:05This was really the the end of that Sixers era, the 8586 team,
- 12:10because after that, Moses left, Bobby Jones retired.
- 12:12Andrew, Tony just never got right.
- 12:15Like we said, that offseason was a mess.
- 12:17But this isn't about the offseason.
- 12:19This is about that 8586 team who had Moses Malone been there.
- 12:24We're looking to make a We're poised to make another deep run.
- 12:28All right, so I did the What If sports with this, And again,
- 12:32this is a very evenly matched and one of the stars throughout
- 12:36all of the games was. Dekembe Mutombo Iverson got his
- 12:41Barkley did his thing, but it came down to the matchup between
- 12:44Moses and Dekembe Mutombo. So this one went after 10 games,
- 12:48it was 55. And then I did one more game on
- 12:51a neutral court. We're playing at MSG for this
- 12:54one, but the 02 thousand 2001 Sixers won the tiebreaker game
- 12:59to to slightly take. This on What if sports.
- 13:03But now it's up to you. You guys vote Who wins the 2001
- 13:07or 2000? 2001 Sixers or the 8586 Sixers?
- 13:12Make sure you take into account how they captivated the region,
- 13:15disappointment, level that they didn't win, and just all those
- 13:18other intangibles. Who wins?
- 13:20On paper, it seems like they're very evenly matched for A36
- 13:23matchup, so go vote wherever you get the podcast.
- 13:26Go to my social media, Twitter and tick, tock, Jimbo, under
- 13:31score, Mont, Instagram, Philly, Jimbo, my Facebook.
- 13:35Leave a comment on YouTube. And again, I know there's more
- 13:39people listening than our voting, so go make sure.
- 13:42Your vote, and maybe your vote can make a difference, but be
- 13:46safe out there. Hopefully the Phillies can show
- 13:50me something against the Rays and get some very good quality
- 13:53team. They've been beating up on some
- 13:55of the the not so good team, so let me see where they are with a
- 13:59measuring stick game. But be safe and remember.
- 14:03On 4th of July and at least started today and see what
- 14:05happens. But but try more listening.
- 14:08Try to be more understanding. Learn something about your
- 14:10neighbor and don't be so quick to judge and get angry And
- 14:14listen instead of talking more. Be safe.
- 14:17Don't do anything stupid. This has been this day in Philly
- 14:20sports history. I'm Jim Montgomery.
- 14:22Go have yourselves Tuesday and until next time I'll see you
- 14:25when I see you.
