- 0:00What is the relationship between ambition and the soul?
- 0:02That's a question I have.
- 0:03That's interesting, right?
- 0:04I'm a very ambitious person, a Capricorn rising, if you will, but also just and also just I feel like I like to I'm a striver.
- 0:13Am I proud of it?
- 0:14I don't know, but I'm coming to terms with that's just who I am.
- 0:17Like I'm quite competitive and I use quite to be gentle to myself.
- 0:21I am like I want to I don't like the word win, but if you have to say it like I know capitalism has made us conditioned.
- 0:29us to believe everything is a competition.
- 0:32I know that.
- 0:33I know that.
- 0:34But at the same time,
- 0:35you know, I have that part of my spirit.
- 0:38I have to be aware of it.
- 0:39It is there.
- 0:40And it has been
- 0:41part of what my therapist taught me to do was like, honor all parts of you as sacredly like
- 0:47part of why you are in the position that you're in.
- 0:50So I can't deny that part of that part of me
- 0:53is part of why you've come to see me in this video, because I have that part of me.
- 0:57I'm very,
- 0:58I'm an ambitious person.
- 0:59So I think about, you know, there's this quote, I don't know who said
- 1:02it, but it's a beautiful quote that said, the more healed I am, the less ambitious I become.
- 1:08Because so much of our ambition is fueled by trauma.
- 1:11It's fueled by not feeling good enough.
- 1:13It's fueled by the sense that we have to perform and do a lot in order to receive love,
- 1:19because it all comes back to love.
- 1:20So if we're ambitious, it's often because if we think,
- 1:23if we had that money or fame or accolades or success, then I'd be accepted.
- 1:27Then I'd be loved.
- 1:28Then I'd belong.
- 1:29Then my parents would be proud of me.
- 1:31Then I'd show my bullies.
- 1:32You know, there's a
- 1:33lot of trauma fuel that can happen.
- 1:34So what that quote is saying is that the more we heal and we
- 1:38come home to unconditional love, which is our nature, the less we feel an ambitious ambition
- 1:44to do anything, like an ambition to be the best at anything, an ambition.
- 1:48But at the same time,
- 1:52I have a little bit of, I'm questioning my relationship with this because I just feel so drawn to greatness.
- 2:05I'm like, greatness?
- 2:06There's God in that.
- 2:08There's the infinite in that.
- 2:10There is spirit in that.
- 2:12When you witness someone who is embodying their craft, their calling at the highest level.
- 2:20okay you cannot help but to feel inspired and what is that word inspire in spirit there's something
- 2:27divine about greatness and that doesn't mean the opposite is true that there's something
- 2:33less worthy or valuable about the opposite what we're saying is when you witness someone it could
- 2:37be for me I oh my goodness this is so random I watched the Rafael Nadal I'm not even a tennis
- 2:43fan okay are you a Nikki fan I'm not even a tennis fan I watched the Nadal documentary because one
- 2:49thing those sports documentary people can do is tell a story, is tell a story and leave you,
- 2:55like documentaries are so wonderful.
- 2:57So leave you on this cliffhanger.
- 2:59Okay.
- 3:00So like I'm,
- 3:01I'm reading Nina Simone's book.
- 3:02I'm learning about her obsession.
- 3:05Oh my goodness.
- 3:06She would
- 3:07practice piano for like five to seven hours a day.
- 3:10Can you believe it?
- 3:11Like what is time?
- 3:12I could
- 3:13never.
- 3:14That is just so wild to me in the most amazing way, which also makes me think about
- 3:19technology and tech addiction and how who today is practicing piano for seven hours a day.
- 3:25Like,
- 3:26oh my word, so much creative capacity is lost because, oh my word, like that kind of attention,
- 3:33there almost has to be nothing else to do.
- 3:36Wait, no, that's not fair because there was other things.
- 3:38she just chose to do that thing.
- 3:39Okay.
- 3:40So, so much respect to her.
- 3:42So she literally from a very,
- 3:44very young age, like 12-ish, she played piano since she was, she had a musical inclination
- 3:48since she was like a baby.
- 3:51They said she could read sheet music at like three.
- 3:53She was like
- 3:53extremely musical.
- 3:55She called herself a musical genius.
- 3:56She spent five to seven hours of her life
- 3:59force learning the piano.
- 4:02Okay.
- 4:03Learning classical music.
- 4:05Then she would improvise lines of Bach
- 4:07with jazz music.
- 4:09And she just had this incredible talent, but it was also because she had this
- 4:12incredible focus.
- 4:14So what did she touch in her lifetime?
- 4:16You know that she started singing
- 4:17because she was playing in these clubs that preferred singers.
- 4:21So then she realized,
- 4:23they realized like she can sing and she has this incredibly, just unbelievable, astonishingly
- 4:28magical voice.
- 4:30The story is extremely fascinating.
- 4:32Another incredible tidbit that I learned was that
- 4:36And her name is not Nina Simone.
- 4:38And I don't want to make it incorrect.
- 4:40I don't know.
- 4:40I forgot what it is because it's Eunice.
- 4:42And then I want to say Wason.
- 4:45I can't remember her last name.
- 4:46But you know why she came up with the name Nina Simone?
- 4:49Because her mom was a preacher and her mom wouldn't have supported her playing in night
- 4:54clubs and playing, quote unquote, the devil's music.
- 4:58And so she made up a fake name to hide her playing in clubs, her music career from her
- 5:03mom.
- 5:04so she knew her mom would what would what would judge her it all comes back but she insisted
- 5:12she insisted and it broke her heart the book speaks about how she had the affection of the
- 5:18world her sister says this but the one person's affection who she craved most who she needed most
- 5:25never gave it to her and that was her mom
- 5:30now so much respect i'm not a historian so if i'm telling these details a little bit incorrectly
- 5:35please nina we respect and love you so much love and respect and where we were was greatness
- 5:43and ambition and the soul now nina simone is a soul singer nina simone sings with something that
- 5:50is visceral and makes music with something that is they said she could cast spell a spell on the
- 5:56rooms that she performed in.
- 5:59And now we want to say that ambition is the opposite of soul.
- 6:01I don't agree.
- 6:03What she chose to be in her lifetime was great.
- 6:07And we get to experience
- 6:09her greatness through her music.
- 6:12And I think it is divine that she had that calling,
- 6:17that singularity of purpose to be so obsessed with music that she wanted to see it to the
- 6:23highest possibility.
- 6:25And so I don't feel that the more healed I become, the less ambitious I am.
- 6:30I do love that sentiment, but I think that witnessing people in their greatness is a gift
- 6:36and that creates legends.
- 6:38Okay.
- 6:39That people who are obsessed with pursuing their calling or craft
- 6:42to the highest level create stories that we have to keep telling.
- 6:48there's a magnetism there that I do think is not only because capitalism teaches us to be
- 6:54competitive I think there's something spiritual about witnessing someone in their mastery okay
- 7:01do we even like the word mastery in the highest expression of their talents
