- 0:02We tend to take the development of life and mind for granted.
- 0:06We do not actually reflect on what it takes for them to emerge
- 0:11from matter. Many believe that somehow
- 0:14various chemical elements in the material world are impacted by
- 0:19the radiation from the sun and through the heat of the core of
- 0:23the planet. To modify material substance,
- 0:27recombine chemicals and voila, life and then mind will emerge.
- 0:34Scientists are now finding various essential elements found
- 0:38in biological entities on meteorites, and they have
- 0:42discovered the presence of water on Mars, both of which
- 0:47indicating that there are other potential causes to the
- 0:50emergence of life here. Possibly it was brought here
- 0:54from elsewhere, just as seeds of various plants are carried
- 0:58across vast expanses of oceans to bring about trees and other
- 1:03plant life on remote islands in our world.
- 1:08However far we try to stretch the influence of matter as the
- 1:12cause of life and mind, however, we always run up against the
- 1:16issue of causality and the need for a force other than material
- 1:21force to create life and mental activity.
- 1:26It is telling that no one who has asserted that given enough
- 1:31time, random mixing of the chemical elements of the world
- 1:35will develop. Shakespeare, in fact, has
- 1:38succeeded in creating life out of bare matter.
- 1:42When we look at every living form, we see that the
- 1:46information required to build it and energize it is contained in
- 1:50seed form, an encoded data set if you will.
- 1:55We can now map and analyze the entire genome of certain
- 1:59species, but have still been unable to find a way to turn
- 2:03matter into life even with this understanding.
- 2:08Charles Darwin, in describing the evolution of species, skips
- 2:13over this initial issue and starts with life forms and how
- 2:17they develop and are modified, mutated, and adjusted over time
- 2:22due to the principle of survival of the fittest.
- 2:26Essentially that those that are better adjusted to their
- 2:30circumstances tend to survive and thrive, and those that are
- 2:34not tend to die off and not be perpetuated.
- 2:39The definition of the fittest is thus directly tied to
- 2:43circumstances. In today's world, that
- 2:46definition would be vastly different than in the world of
- 2:50the Neanderthal, for instance. The qualities are transmitted
- 2:55through the genetic code. Researchers in genetics have
- 3:00found that certain characteristics perpetuate as
- 3:03dominant and others as recessive.
- 3:06Over time. Both.
- 3:08Natural selection takes place which combines genetic material
- 3:13from the parents into a new variation, and which tends to
- 3:17favor those that are the fittest in that environment to
- 3:21reproduce, and mutation play a role in bringing about change.
- 3:27Mutation can be caused by external factors such as
- 3:31radiation, as well as other causes.
- 3:35Mutation can be beneficial to the survival of the species, or
- 3:38detrimental depending on what it takes for its actual form.
- 3:44The question still arises as to how this all occurs.
- 3:49Shriorobindo has noted that nothing can evolve that has not
- 3:53been previously involved in matter.
- 3:57This is akin to the encoding of a data set within certain forms
- 4:01of matter such that it can express life and under the right
- 4:05circumstances, in the correct developed forms.
- 4:10The powers of mine. In order to be involved,
- 4:14however, they must come from elsewhere, and for this we then
- 4:20have to appreciate the existence of independent worlds or domains
- 4:24of life and mind that act within their own sphere and which then
- 4:29imprint impacts into the material world.
- 4:34There then comes about both the possibility and the necessity of
- 4:38a dual action. In order to create the world as
- 4:41we know it, there needs to be the internal pressure from
- 4:45within to manifest the encoded data, and there must be a
- 4:50pressure from the native planes, which are the source of that
- 4:53encoding, to support and further that action when the time and
- 4:58circumstances are favourable, Shuyorobindo writes.
- 5:03Quote. Our material world is the result
- 5:06of all the others, for the other principles have all descended
- 5:10into matter to create the physical universe, and every
- 5:14particle of what we call matter contains all of them implicit in
- 5:19itself. Their secret action is involved
- 5:22in every moment of its existence and every movement of its
- 5:27activity. And as matter is the last word
- 5:31of the descent, so it is also the first word of the ascent.
- 5:36As the powers of all these planes, worlds, grades, degrees
- 5:42are involved in the material existence, so are they all
- 5:46capable of evolution out of it. It is for this reason that
- 5:51material being does not begin and end with gases and chemical
- 5:55compounds and physical forces and movements with nebulae and
- 5:59Suns and earths, but evolves. Life evolves, mind must evolve
- 6:06eventually. Supermind and the higher degrees
- 6:10of the spiritual existence. Evolution comes by the unceasing
- 6:15pressure of the supra material planes on the material,
- 6:19compelling it to deliver out of itself their principles and
- 6:23powers, which might conceivably otherwise have slept imprisoned
- 6:28in the rigidity of the material formula.
- 6:32This would Even so have been improbable, since their presence
- 6:36there implies a purpose of deliverance, but still this
- 6:41necessity from below is actually very much aided by a kindred
- 6:46superior pressure. End Quote.
