Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / US conducting strikes against Iranian assets near the Strait of Hormuz
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: US Central Command just announced they begin a third round
- 0:03Speaker 1: of strikes against Iran in response to Rani enforces attacking
- 0:07Speaker 1: a Cyprus flagged containership in the straight of war moves.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Centcom says the US is degrading Iran's ability to attack
- 0:15Speaker 1: ships and the strikes are being carried out at the
- 0:18Speaker 1: direction of the Commander in Chief, Tom am Skill. Right
- 0:21Speaker 1: back to you on this. Obviously, this is the perennial
- 0:24Speaker 1: issue right now. No matter where we are, we talk
- 0:26Speaker 1: about the Texas Senate race, this is gonna make news
- 0:29Speaker 1: because we just don't know where this is from one
- 0:31Speaker 1: minute to the other. It seems to be reactionary. Sometimes
- 0:35Speaker 1: Iran hits ships after President Trump gave him an ultimatum,
- 0:39Speaker 1: and now we're hitting Iran. What happens next.
- 0:42Speaker 2: We don't know what happens next. But I will say this,
- 0:44Speaker 2: there are some that believe that if we take some
- 0:46Speaker 2: sort of military action, that that's going to be bad
- 0:49Speaker 2: for midterms for Republicans. I actually disagree with that. I
- 0:52Speaker 2: think the fact that we went in the first place,
- 0:54Speaker 2: so there were some that weren't happy about that. But
- 0:56Speaker 2: if you are going to go in, I think most
- 0:57Speaker 2: of those folks think finish the job, get it done,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and these diplomatic talks sixty days and then we extended,
- 1:03Speaker 2: and then we're in a ceasefire, and then we get hit,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and then they're saying crazy things on social media and
- 1:07Speaker 2: kill Trump in the streets. I think the president needs
- 1:10Speaker 2: to take action. I think he's doing that, and I
- 1:12Speaker 2: think the American people will reward him for that, because
- 1:15Speaker 2: I think the worst thing that can happen is just
- 1:16Speaker 2: rinse and repeat for months on end and have no change.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Riley, we were on this show a couple of weeks ago,
- 1:22Speaker 1: Tommy and I and we broke news. We had the
- 1:24Speaker 1: Vice President come on this show, call in from being
- 1:26Speaker 1: pulled away from the things that he was involved in,
- 1:29Speaker 1: to talk about this deal, this big plan that was
- 1:32Speaker 1: going to give sixty days, this memorandum understanding working towards
- 1:36Speaker 1: the deal. The entire administration seemed to be locking step.
- 1:38Speaker 1: This was a good plan and it had teeth. And
- 1:40Speaker 1: here we are a few weeks later, and it feels
- 1:43Speaker 1: like we're back to a month and a half ago.
- 1:45Speaker 1: It feels like nothing's changed. Where do Americans sit on
- 1:50Speaker 1: this so they feel like the administration is losing control?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Do they feel like that we're playing catch up.
- 1:55Speaker 3: You know well, and you do know this. It speaks
- 1:57Speaker 3: to the instability of the Middle East specifically, I'll agree
- 2:02Speaker 3: with Tommy here. I think President Trump is a man
- 2:03Speaker 3: of his word. If he says he's going to do something,
- 2:06Speaker 3: you better believe he is going to follow through with it.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Now you ask where Americans sit, I'll speak specifically to
- 2:11Speaker 3: where gen Z sits on this issue. I think there's
- 2:14Speaker 3: a lot of people who are let's say, recently college
- 2:18Speaker 3: graduated or even those still in college, who are kind
- 2:20Speaker 3: of tired of the conversation surrounding the Middle East and
- 2:24Speaker 3: the US involvement, especially those honestly who are conservatives. I
- 2:28Speaker 3: think there are a lot of gen Z conservatives. When
- 2:31Speaker 3: they say America first, they mean really America only. Is
- 2:35Speaker 3: that because they don't have a great understanding of what
- 2:37Speaker 3: US involvement looks like overseas. Probably, I think that's a
- 2:41Speaker 3: large part of it. But in speaking to my generation
- 2:43Speaker 3: and how we feel about this topic, I think there's
- 2:45Speaker 3: a level of exhaustion to bed with Kitchen quite frankly,
- 2:50Speaker 3: of where they really are. You know, we see these
- 2:52Speaker 3: breaking news all the time of strikes on a run.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I feel like I see that every other day at
- 2:56Speaker 3: this point, so they're even speaking for myself. There's a
- 2:59Speaker 3: level of confusion of where we're actually at.
- 3:01Speaker 1: You know, we're not that far apart in age. Here.
- 3:03Speaker 1: We do have three generations represented here, right gen Z.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Riley talks about gen Z, Well, they grew up with
- 3:08Speaker 1: the world on terror, right They They came to adulthood
- 3:11Speaker 1: in a twenty year war. You came to adulthood Gen X, Yes,
- 3:17Speaker 1: you know as that war, as the Islamic radicalism became
- 3:20Speaker 1: a thing. And so your generation sees a little bit
- 3:23Speaker 1: differently and probably has a little bit more patience because
- 3:26Speaker 1: you saw nine to eleven and you saw the you know,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and maybe not you specifically, but just your generation saw
- 3:32Speaker 1: the bombings in Bay Root, saw the USS coal and
- 3:35Speaker 1: what radical Zome terrorism can do if you don't take
- 3:38Speaker 1: the fight to them.
- 3:38Speaker 4: It's a great point. I was in New York on
- 3:41Speaker 4: nine to eleven. I wasn't downtown, but I could see
- 3:43Speaker 4: it right from about here where I was working in
- 3:45Speaker 4: the buildings on fire and getting off in a ferry
- 3:47Speaker 4: to get back to New Jersey, and knowing that my
- 3:50Speaker 4: friends were dying or had died in the World Trade Center,
- 3:54Speaker 4: So yeah, I do have a different perspective. I think
- 3:56Speaker 4: Riley makes a great point though, around the numbness and
- 3:58Speaker 4: fatigue around this, because I look at oil futures like
- 4:01Speaker 4: right now, right, seventy one dollars right a barrel, which
- 4:04Speaker 4: is pretty low, right considering it was above one hundred
- 4:06Speaker 4: at the beginning of this war gallon of gas three
- 4:09Speaker 4: point eighty eight, it was well above four dollars. So
- 4:12Speaker 4: I think at this point, Joey, I think, I think
- 4:15Speaker 4: the American people they're either number they have patients. But
- 4:18Speaker 4: in the end, until the straight up oar mousa is
- 4:20Speaker 4: completely open, this is going to be a problem for
- 4:22Speaker 4: Republicans in the midterms because the longer this goes on,
- 4:25Speaker 4: the more Democrats could have the argument that they're the
- 4:27Speaker 4: anti war party, and therefore they may do better in
- 4:29Speaker 4: the midterms, and they otherwise would if we didn't have
- 4:31Speaker 4: this war happening right now.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Tell me.
- 4:33Speaker 2: But I will say to that point, and I agree
- 4:35Speaker 2: with everybody here on the level of exhaustion we're at,
- 4:38Speaker 2: but I think it's more exhausting to hear that we're
- 4:40Speaker 2: having diplomatic talks and diplomatic talks and diplomatic talks and
- 4:43Speaker 2: then it's like, oh, they've agreed to this, that or whatever.
- 4:45Speaker 2: That's funny baloney. They don't mean anything they say, at
- 4:48Speaker 2: least the people that we've been.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Talking, Well, we don't know who we're talking to exactly.
- 4:52Speaker 2: But I think that the fatigue comes when we keep
- 4:54Speaker 2: hearing that there's some kind of a ceasefire or there's
- 4:56Speaker 2: some kind of a negotiation. I think being decisive. I
- 5:00Speaker 2: think that that, to me, is a better path politically
- 5:04Speaker 2: than doing the same thing over and over again and
- 5:07Speaker 2: convincing people that we're getting somewhere diplomatic, but without ground troops.
- 5:11Speaker 4: How can we be to be tay some Joe, I mean,
- 5:12Speaker 4: you're the military guy.
- 5:15Speaker 1: There's a lot going on right now. The President favors
- 5:18Speaker 1: diplomatic solutions and understands that his reputation is he has
- 5:21Speaker 1: to use the big stick when it's necessary, you know,
- 5:25Speaker 1: speak softly, carried a big stick. President Trump is to
- 5:27Speaker 1: speak loudly and carry the big stick. Either way, there
- 5:29Speaker 1: has to be consequence, and I think that's what President
- 5:31Speaker 1: Trump is trying to balance. And it's not easy to
- 5:33Speaker 1: do with folks whose ideology surpass any convenience. They could want.
- 5:37Speaker 1: You can't just say, hey, just go be rich and
- 5:38Speaker 1: be peaceful. That doesn't work for them. The big takeaway
- 5:41Speaker 1: from here We've turned Tommy into a warhawk and we'll
- 5:44Speaker 1: stick to that.
