Latest / Birdland Territory / Swept away in New York, how do the Orioles regroup?
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Captain Obvious called to tell us that did not go well.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The O's and the Bronx was a mismatch. He O's
- 0:13Speaker 1: got dominated by the Yankees and they lose four street.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to Berdland territory. Our latest show is that the
- 0:20Speaker 1: night after the final game in the Bronx twelve to one,
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Yankees wanted leaving the Oriols guys fifteen to twenty
- 0:28Speaker 1: nine out of first. Right now, they were outscored thirty
- 0:31Speaker 1: nine to ten, and they've been outscored in a five
- 0:34Speaker 1: game losing streak fifty to fifteen. Other than that, things
- 0:37Speaker 1: are great, but we yikes, what a rough stretch for
- 0:40Speaker 1: this team. And obviously the question that everybody's asking Brad
- 0:43Speaker 1: and Tim is how they go from here, how they regroup,
- 0:46Speaker 1: pick up the pieces, nay team meeting, what do they
- 0:50Speaker 1: do to try to get this thing right? The first
- 0:52Speaker 1: thing I will say on their behalf is most of
- 0:55Speaker 1: the American League is not playing great. One team is,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and they just dominated the Orioles. So maybe they move
- 1:02Speaker 1: on now to the rest and hopefully they can handle them.
- 1:06Speaker 1: They have to, guys, because what alternative do they have? Right?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right. Steve.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I think I think you saw the class of the
- 1:14Speaker 3: American League there, and it was a bold statement that
- 1:17Speaker 3: the Yankees are a little bit further ahead of the
- 1:20Speaker 3: Orioles are than the Orioles are right now. So yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 3: maybe just turn your attention to the wild Card and
- 1:25Speaker 3: kind of just see what's going on there, because I
- 1:28Speaker 3: think in the standings are a game and a half behind.
- 1:30Speaker 3: So really, when you look at it, nobody in the
- 1:33Speaker 3: American League is still taken off, and you kind of
- 1:36Speaker 3: just have to roll past the series and kind of
- 1:38Speaker 3: just take it as a bad stretch and not really
- 1:41Speaker 3: look too deep into it and just kind of move
- 1:43Speaker 3: past it. There's really a team meeting is not gonna help.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Kind of discussing what happened in the series isn't really
- 1:50Speaker 3: gonna help. I think maybe you can, you know, talk
- 1:52Speaker 3: about some of the positives and go from there. But
- 1:54Speaker 3: I think going down to Miami, you're gonna face a
- 1:57Speaker 3: good team down there that has good starting pitching right now.
- 2:00Speaker 3: It's not like they're going down there to face some
- 2:01Speaker 3: of these recent Miami Marlin teams. You're going down there
- 2:04Speaker 3: and facing good pitching staff. So just kind of move
- 2:07Speaker 3: past it and Hopefully that long flight last night and
- 2:09Speaker 3: the late get in this morning doesn't carry over into
- 2:13Speaker 3: this series and they kind of get rolling.
- 2:17Speaker 4: There's no way around it, guys. That was a troubling series.
- 2:21Speaker 4: You see one sided series throughout the course of any
- 2:26Speaker 4: baseball team over one hundred and sixty two games, but
- 2:29Speaker 4: this was a different level of one sided series. The
- 2:34Speaker 4: minus twenty nine run differential that Steve mentioned, thirty nine
- 2:38Speaker 4: to ten outscored, that's tied for the biggest run differential
- 2:42Speaker 4: in the history of this franchise. You have to go
- 2:45Speaker 4: back to May eleventh through the fourteenth, two thousand going
- 2:49Speaker 4: against the Red Sox and just the runners in scoring
- 2:53Speaker 4: position Orioles were four for twenty seven, Yankees were fourteen
- 2:57Speaker 4: or excuse me, eighteen for thirty.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Don't want to short change them.
- 3:02Speaker 4: It was just a rough, rough series and it's gotten
- 3:06Speaker 4: to the point where Craig Albert as I think it
- 3:09Speaker 4: was following Sunday's game, called this a crucial stretch.
- 3:13Speaker 5: You know, what team do you want to be.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Do you want to lay down or do you want
- 3:17Speaker 4: to get back up and fight? And bred I'm with
- 3:20Speaker 4: you that you can look at it, you know, in
- 3:23Speaker 4: the sense that.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Hey, the rest of the American League is going through
- 3:25Speaker 5: it right now. There's three teams right now with a
- 3:29Speaker 5: winning record in the American League.
- 3:31Speaker 4: It's unbelievable. But this Orioles team needs to stop the bleeding.
- 3:36Speaker 4: You're five games under five hundred and then you can't
- 3:39Speaker 4: continue to dig a deeper hole.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and the former player of me is always gonna
- 3:45Speaker 3: be positive and try to find a silver lining because
- 3:48Speaker 3: you don't have a choice. The games continue going on
- 3:50Speaker 3: and you got to go out there and play every
- 3:52Speaker 3: single day.
- 3:53Speaker 2: The analyst and the kind of fan.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Watching this, Like I was talking with Steve before the show,
- 3:57Speaker 3: it's it's kind of the same things we've been talking
- 4:00Speaker 3: about since we started this show. The second series of
- 4:02Speaker 3: the year are still there. The starting pitching isn't pitching
- 4:05Speaker 3: up to the standard that I think we have set
- 4:08Speaker 3: for them, and it's the defense, and it's the runners
- 4:10Speaker 3: in scoring position. It's kind of the same problems we've
- 4:13Speaker 3: been seeing from the beginning and nothing has really changed
- 4:16Speaker 3: at this point. And to me, that's the kind of
- 4:18Speaker 3: glare and concerning part of do they turn this around?
- 4:21Speaker 3: And when can they turn this around? If they're going
- 4:23Speaker 3: to continue doing the same things they've been doing.
- 4:26Speaker 4: And Brad, you mentioned the fact that this isn't the
- 4:29Speaker 4: time for the closed door meeting in the clubhouse. You
- 4:33Speaker 4: played in the majors a long time at one sided
- 4:36Speaker 4: series happen at what is this clubhouse? What do you
- 4:40Speaker 4: think is going on inside of this clubhouse as they
- 4:43Speaker 4: try to regroup.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're bummed.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I think going into New York you kind of hope
- 4:48Speaker 3: to go at minimum two and two, and then going
- 4:51Speaker 3: that game last night, you're kind of hoping the salvage
- 4:53Speaker 3: by going one to three, and you kind of move
- 4:55Speaker 3: on to Miami and try to go four and three
- 4:58Speaker 3: on the road trip, but now go all the four.
- 5:00Speaker 3: It's it's definitely it was probably a pretty somber clubhouse
- 5:03Speaker 3: last night. When you lose a series like that against
- 5:05Speaker 3: the Yankees and someone in your division that badly, I
- 5:09Speaker 3: think it does sting a little bit, and there's nothing
- 5:11Speaker 3: wrong with that. But like I said, it's kind of
- 5:13Speaker 3: it's a one hundred six two game season, and I
- 5:15Speaker 3: know I've said that million times and we're not even
- 5:18Speaker 3: forty games in here, so it's you still have plenty
- 5:20Speaker 3: of time, but you just you want to see the
- 5:22Speaker 3: positives and you want to start get going and doing
- 5:25Speaker 3: the things you know you can do better. And I
- 5:27Speaker 3: think that's kind of where the players are at right now.
- 5:29Speaker 3: It's just kind of looking at themselves saying, what can
- 5:32Speaker 3: I do better to help this team win? And I
- 5:35Speaker 3: need to start it tomorrow.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Over the years, cover many years covering baseball, I've always
- 5:42Speaker 1: been amazed at baseball's players' ability to quickly move on.
- 5:46Speaker 1: There have been times, guys when the Oriols have lost
- 5:48Speaker 1: seven of eight, the town is down, everybody's ripping them,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and I walk in there and I go, these guys
- 5:56Speaker 1: seem completely fine. They're ready to go because they have
- 5:59Speaker 1: that turn to pay mentality. But I do think a
- 6:02Speaker 1: season that's going south, even this early, and you, Brad,
- 6:06Speaker 1: you tell me, if I'm onto something at all here,
- 6:08Speaker 1: it can eventually start to bring those guys down. As
- 6:13Speaker 1: upbeat as baseball players are flush it move on day one,
- 6:17Speaker 1: all these things at some point it gets you. I
- 6:20Speaker 1: hope doubt is not creeping in for the Oils right now.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I doubt it is, but they have to prove it
- 6:25Speaker 1: in the record now.
- 6:27Speaker 2: No, I think you're right.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I think it's it's one of those things where you
- 6:29Speaker 3: know it's early, but the expression of baseball is it
- 6:33Speaker 3: can get early late or it can get late early,
- 6:35Speaker 3: And it's starting to creep towards that that point of
- 6:39Speaker 3: the season where, like I said, it's kind of just
- 6:41Speaker 3: the same things happening. I think they're all in good,
- 6:43Speaker 3: good places right now, but I mean you go to
- 6:46Speaker 3: Miami loose two to three, you get swept or something
- 6:48Speaker 3: like that, then it's kind of like, oh, man, like
- 6:50Speaker 3: what do we need to do to turn this around quickly?
- 6:53Speaker 3: Because you're just in that danger zone. I feel like
- 6:55Speaker 3: five games under five hundred is kind of teetering your
- 6:58Speaker 3: I feel like you can get close to ten games
- 7:00Speaker 3: under real fast. As close as you are to being
- 7:03Speaker 3: five hundred, you can be ten games under real fast
- 7:06Speaker 3: if things don't start heading in the right direction.
- 7:10Speaker 4: And what really concerns me the most, and we talked
- 7:13Speaker 4: about it a lot leading up to the start of
- 7:15Speaker 4: the season, We've talked about it during this show where
- 7:20Speaker 4: this was supposed to be the easier part of the schedule,
- 7:23Speaker 4: and the O's have played thirty five games, only six
- 7:27Speaker 4: of them have come against teams with winning records, which
- 7:31Speaker 4: is crazy to think about, you know, the Yankees and
- 7:34Speaker 4: the Pirates, and the Orioles ended up getting swept in
- 7:37Speaker 4: both of those series. And we've been saying for the
- 7:39Speaker 4: past week or so, the schedule really turns up this month.
- 7:43Speaker 4: You know, the Yankees come to town next week, you face
- 7:46Speaker 4: the Rays in two series and they're off to a
- 7:48Speaker 4: hot start. The Blue Jays are at least starting to
- 7:52Speaker 4: get back on track as they're dealing with a ton
- 7:55Speaker 4: of injuries. It doesn't get easier. It does not get
- 7:58Speaker 4: easier for this team.
- 8:01Speaker 1: No true does it. And along those lines, ten to
- 8:04Speaker 1: what you just mentioned, the Oriols have only played three
- 8:07Speaker 1: teams this year that currently standings as of today, are
- 8:10Speaker 1: five hundred or better Cleveland. You cited the Yankees and Pittsburgh.
- 8:14Speaker 1: They only won one game in those three series against
- 8:17Speaker 1: the Guardians, one in ten against five hundred or better.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Now they are five and three in series against losing teams.
- 8:25Speaker 1: So maybe that's telling us long term, some wins are
- 8:28Speaker 1: coming against lesser teams. But at some point you've got
- 8:32Speaker 1: to step up to better teams. Obviously you're going to
- 8:34Speaker 1: need to do that in October if you could make it.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And so I think that's a daunting stat for the
- 8:39Speaker 1: Oriels right now.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely concerning when you I mean one in
- 8:44Speaker 3: ten and eleven games. I mean, it's just when you
- 8:48Speaker 3: when you said that out loud, I didn't realize they
- 8:50Speaker 3: didn't do as well against those teams. But one in
- 8:52Speaker 3: ten is is a stark message that is shown for
- 8:56Speaker 3: this team. And yeah, you just it's not gonna get
- 8:59Speaker 3: any easier. You're not going to face teams that are
- 9:01Speaker 3: under five hundred for the entire season. You know, teams
- 9:03Speaker 3: are gonna get going. So you just got to hope
- 9:05Speaker 3: that the Orioles are one of those teams that kind
- 9:07Speaker 3: of just get going and find their footing here and
- 9:09Speaker 3: as they head into June, just kind of see themselves
- 9:11Speaker 3: in a better spot in the standings, because right now
- 9:13Speaker 3: it's pretty bleak. And obviously I think it's kind of
- 9:16Speaker 3: ramped up because it was against the Yankees, and I
- 9:18Speaker 3: think because of the way the series went, I think
- 9:20Speaker 3: it's kind of blaring. But the loss against the Ashells
- 9:23Speaker 3: before the Yankee Series two is the same thing.
- 9:25Speaker 2: It was a drubbing.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So you're talking five games in a row now where
- 9:28Speaker 3: there really wasn't even a chance to win one of
- 9:30Speaker 3: those games. So it's it's got to get going, and
- 9:32Speaker 3: it's got to get going pretty soon here.
- 9:35Speaker 4: And I don't even think they've had a lead in
- 9:37Speaker 4: any of those five games, Brad. They didn't have a
- 9:39Speaker 4: lead in the in the Yankees series either, And it
- 9:41Speaker 4: just kind of gets back to what we've been saying,
- 9:44Speaker 4: they got to get in early leading games.
- 9:47Speaker 5: The offense has to wake up.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Over the course of the first three innings of ball games,
- 9:52Speaker 4: because heading into last night, they were last and runs scored,
- 9:55Speaker 4: and last and in batting average through the first three
- 9:58Speaker 4: innings of ball games.
- 10:01Speaker 1: The Last Sport says the Orioles, who've been playing in
- 10:04Speaker 1: Baltimore since nineteen fifty four, have never lost five straight
- 10:08Speaker 1: by five runs or more. They now have. This team
- 10:11Speaker 1: has set history they didn't want to set. Now. I'll
- 10:14Speaker 1: say this, and again this is Pollyanna Steve talking. A
- 10:17Speaker 1: couple of years ago, the Nationals were nineteen and thirty
- 10:20Speaker 1: one and won the World Series. Not only did they
- 10:24Speaker 1: make the playoffs, they want it. I'm not in any
- 10:27Speaker 1: way saying this team is going to do that. There
- 10:29Speaker 1: is precedent. You can bury yourself and you can dig
- 10:33Speaker 1: out of the hole, but the hole is getting bigger
- 10:35Speaker 1: with each loss, so the Oriols got to turn it
- 10:37Speaker 1: in fast. We'll see how it goes in Miami. We'll
- 10:40Speaker 1: talk more about this topic in a moment here on
- 10:43Speaker 1: a Bergland territory.
- 10:44Speaker 6: You know, we don't always have to do things because
- 10:46Speaker 6: that's how it's always been.
- 10:48Speaker 7: Look, people consider me old school, and I thought I was,
- 10:51Speaker 7: but then we had the pitch clock and the abs
- 10:53Speaker 7: and ban on shifts and all these things that we've
- 10:56Speaker 7: had for a long time in baseball. And you know what,
- 10:58Speaker 7: much like mitt Mobile and the other mobile carriers, I'm
- 11:00Speaker 7: here for the new school and the changes that have
- 11:02Speaker 7: been made.
- 11:03Speaker 1: It's a good call.
- 11:04Speaker 6: You can ditch over priced wireless. You don't have to say, oh,

- 11:46Speaker 1: So the Bird's fifteen and twenty. Now they're playing the
- 11:49Speaker 1: Marlins starting tonight. They are sixteen and nineteen and man,
- 11:53Speaker 1: the team was hitting with another gut punch on the
- 11:55Speaker 1: injury front on Monday when it was revealed that Jordan West,
- 12:00Speaker 1: who has a partial tear of his right UCL it's
- 12:02Speaker 1: going to be shut down for now and reevaluated. The
- 12:05Speaker 1: elbow is not responding again. He had a PRP. It
- 12:08Speaker 1: hasn't fixed the problem. Fans are fearing surgery. That is
- 12:12Speaker 1: not the teams take yet reevaluate and see. But it
- 12:17Speaker 1: sounds not great at all.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Whenever you see an elbow injury and it's it's getting reevaluated,
- 12:25Speaker 3: it's never.
- 12:26Speaker 2: It's never a good sign.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I'm hoping I'm wrong, but history kind of tells us
- 12:30Speaker 3: when you have a injury like that, you get the
- 12:33Speaker 3: p RP, you start your rehab or throwing program, and
- 12:35Speaker 3: then it turns into reevaluation. Usually never ends in a
- 12:38Speaker 3: good spot. I hope for Jordan it does, but it
- 12:42Speaker 3: just kind of reemphasizes the point that there's no there's
- 12:45Speaker 3: no help on the horizon. There's no reserves coming to
- 12:49Speaker 3: help out the starters that they originally had thought to.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Start the year.
- 12:53Speaker 3: It's looking more and more bleak by the day that
- 12:55Speaker 3: they're going to be coming back anytime soon. So at
- 12:57Speaker 3: this point, it's kind of you can look at it
- 13:00Speaker 3: two ways. I think from the player side, it's kind
- 13:02Speaker 3: of like, hey, guys, this is what we got, Like,
- 13:04Speaker 3: there's no you don't have to look behind your back.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Jeremi Jackson don't have to look behind his back, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 3: Blaize Alexander, the guys getting play at third base don't
- 13:12Speaker 3: have to look behind their back. They're going to be
- 13:14Speaker 3: the guys and it's gonna be up to them to
- 13:16Speaker 3: kind of ship into shape here and turn it around.
- 13:19Speaker 3: And kind of there's nobody coming to help from the
- 13:22Speaker 3: injured list is basically what it boils down to, and
- 13:25Speaker 3: it can be a good thing when players kind of
- 13:27Speaker 3: see that on the active roster they don't have to
- 13:29Speaker 3: kind of look over their shoulder somebody come on behind them.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Well, first off, I just feel terrible for Jordan Westburg
- 13:36Speaker 4: the person, because it seems like a great guy, hard
- 13:40Speaker 4: worker and a heck of a baseball player. This is
- 13:44Speaker 4: a former All Star, and I think the more you
- 13:48Speaker 4: see this lineup without him, the more you recognize his
- 13:52Speaker 4: importance and just him being such a glue guy in
- 13:56Speaker 4: this lineup where you look at the offensive numbers when
- 13:59Speaker 4: he he's in it as opposed to when he's out of
- 14:02Speaker 4: the lineup, and it's.
- 14:03Speaker 5: Night and day. He drives in runs.
- 14:06Speaker 4: He is a run producer, and I think, for my money,
- 14:09Speaker 4: with including all this young core, he's their most clutch
- 14:14Speaker 4: player as well when you look at his numbers with
- 14:16Speaker 4: runners in scoring positions. So it's a devastating blow. I'm
- 14:20Speaker 4: with you, Brad. It seems like the writing is on
- 14:23Speaker 4: the wall that he's going to get Tommy John surgery.
- 14:27Speaker 4: And if you think about it from Jordan Westberg's perspective,
- 14:30Speaker 4: still a young ballplayer, you might as well take a
- 14:33Speaker 4: long view in terms of your career and just get
- 14:36Speaker 4: it cleaned up and be ready for next year.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Well, and you're right, Tim, he is a glue, he's
- 14:43Speaker 1: a clutch player, he's kind of the he's not the
- 14:46Speaker 1: captain they're bigger, higher profile guys, but he's kind of
- 14:50Speaker 1: like an unofficial captain, and I think there he's like
- 14:52Speaker 1: their security blanket. They just feel so good when he's
- 14:55Speaker 1: in there, and he's proven to be that. And he
- 14:58Speaker 1: was the one prospect the opposit that have rushed, We
- 15:01Speaker 1: waited and wait, he went, is Westburg gonna get here?
- 15:03Speaker 1: And after all that time, look how it worked out.
- 15:05Speaker 1: So maybe that's a message there. They overseasoned him and
- 15:09Speaker 1: he hit the ground running, and he has told reporters
- 15:14Speaker 1: what's so disappointing is he played all those years of
- 15:16Speaker 1: Mississippi State into the Miners almost no issues whatsoever, and
- 15:20Speaker 1: now in the major's constant issues, so it's hard to
- 15:23Speaker 1: say his injury prone. He never has been, but all
- 15:25Speaker 1: of a sudden now everything's gone wrong. So we wish
- 15:28Speaker 1: him the best. They sure need him. I want to
- 15:30Speaker 1: ask you guys about the first inning last night, twelve
- 15:33Speaker 1: to one. In the end, it didn't matter, but Aaron
- 15:36Speaker 1: judge for me, is in a special category when you
- 15:40Speaker 1: throw a pitch that strikes him out and the umpire
- 15:43Speaker 1: missed it on the fifth pitch to judge. They didn't challenge.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I think they should have challenged again. Now we've almost
- 15:50Speaker 1: reached the point with these challenges that teams are so
- 15:52Speaker 1: afraid to use them early. Don't want to lose one early.
- 15:55Speaker 1: But again, I think they have to have a meeting
- 15:57Speaker 1: where they say, guys, it says Aaron Judge when we
- 16:00Speaker 1: strike him out. Even Alberta has said after the game
- 16:04Speaker 1: he deserved to earn his strikeout there. So do you
- 16:09Speaker 1: guys think he's kind of like a special category guy
- 16:11Speaker 1: in this role?
- 16:14Speaker 3: To me, I think he's one of three hitters in
- 16:17Speaker 3: the major leagues in the first inning. If you have
- 16:19Speaker 3: a chance to strike him out, you got to take
- 16:21Speaker 3: a shot. If you think it's close, it's worth a challenge.
- 16:23Speaker 3: To me, Aaron judges in the scoring position when he's
- 16:25Speaker 3: at home plate, So if you have a chance, you
- 16:28Speaker 3: can't look at him the same as you do every
- 16:30Speaker 3: other player, because when he's at home plate, he has
- 16:33Speaker 3: a chance hit a ball over the fence. Every time
- 16:34Speaker 3: he's up there. It just becomes fact at this point.
- 16:37Speaker 3: So to me, I feel like he's in a different
- 16:39Speaker 3: category and it just seems like a good chance there.
- 16:43Speaker 3: It was so close at least seemed like he wanted to.
- 16:45Speaker 3: But you just have It's like one of those things
- 16:47Speaker 3: you just have to, like right away do it, and
- 16:50Speaker 3: unfortunately it bit him in the butt there, and he
- 16:52Speaker 3: could have got that first thing with no runs because
- 16:53Speaker 3: he got the next three guys out after that. So
- 16:56Speaker 3: it's you never know how the inning is gonna play out.
- 16:58Speaker 3: And obviously Hinseight's twenty twenty, but personally, I think I would
- 17:01Speaker 3: have taken a shot there. And like you said, Alburnez
- 17:03Speaker 3: after the game said he wants to catchers be more aggressive.
- 17:07Speaker 3: They think it's a good pitch, they're trusting them and
- 17:09Speaker 3: to go after it and try to get that strike
- 17:11Speaker 3: out there.
- 17:12Speaker 4: I think when it comes to these challenges and using
- 17:16Speaker 4: them early on, especially in the first and inning of
- 17:18Speaker 4: ball games, it's time and place. So you have to
- 17:22Speaker 4: consider the circumstances that the Orioles had coming into that game.
- 17:26Speaker 4: You just got beat bad the prior three nights, and
- 17:31Speaker 4: you have a situation where Aaron Judge is one strike
- 17:34Speaker 4: away from being out.
- 17:36Speaker 5: This isn't to be one or two. This is for
- 17:40Speaker 5: a strikeout.
- 17:42Speaker 4: It was a one and two count at the time,
- 17:45Speaker 4: and I think that's where Adley needs to use it.
- 17:47Speaker 4: And it was interesting looking at the Stackcast this morning,
- 17:50Speaker 4: guys ad least six for eight when challenging pitches this year.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Is that's strong seventy five success rate when challenging. He's
- 18:00Speaker 4: challenged zero point eight percent of challengeable pitches this year.
- 18:04Speaker 4: And Statcast has what they call expected challenge rate, so
- 18:09Speaker 4: how much he should be challenging. His expected challenge rate
- 18:13Speaker 4: is one point nine percent, So that's a difference of
- 18:17Speaker 4: negative point one percent over expected challenges. That puts Adly
- 18:23Speaker 4: at the eighth worst percentage in baseball in terms of
- 18:27Speaker 4: that differential. So when he's challenging, he's extremely successful. You
- 18:32Speaker 4: will absolutely take the seventy five percent. But those numbers
- 18:36Speaker 4: that I just gave you, that illustrates what Craig Albernas
- 18:40Speaker 4: is talking about. He wants to see Adley and Samuel
- 18:43Speaker 4: Bisio be more aggressive with these challenges.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Interesting. So, Brad, you mentioned three guys. I'm gonna guess,
- 18:50Speaker 1: so Tani could be who are your three?
- 18:53Speaker 3: It's good now you put me on the spot. I
- 18:55Speaker 3: think I'm still puttro out in there. I mean I
- 18:58Speaker 3: I would he's he's having a great season at this point.
- 19:01Speaker 3: It's just on the top of my head. I was
- 19:03Speaker 3: thinking of him and there's not many other guys. Ben
- 19:05Speaker 3: Rice might be in that category right now, I mean
- 19:09Speaker 3: him out, So yeah, Ben right, I don't know. I
- 19:12Speaker 3: think Trout's still he deserves to still be in that
- 19:14Speaker 3: top top tier category.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he's had a lower sergence this year. If
- 19:18Speaker 1: lad Guerrero, he could be one the only Oriols don't
- 19:20Speaker 1: see Oh Tony much. But he's in that class. So yeah,
- 19:24Speaker 1: there are there's a select few guys when you get
- 19:26Speaker 1: a chance to strike him out. And Tim, I think
- 19:28Speaker 1: you're right. I think the message to Adleie is you're
- 19:31Speaker 1: having a great year, be a little more aggressive. We
- 19:34Speaker 1: believe in you. If you start getting three or four
- 19:36Speaker 1: in a row wrong, maybe we'll pull back the handhole
- 19:38Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Yeah, well again, Steve, it it's time and place like
- 19:43Speaker 4: if it's to get and out, and Craig Albanaz has
- 19:46Speaker 4: very been very steadfast and talking about that. If it's
- 19:49Speaker 4: to end and at that, that's a different category as
- 19:54Speaker 4: opposed to go up one two in the count. If
- 19:57Speaker 4: you can end in at that, and and especially considering
- 20:01Speaker 4: the slide that the Orioles had been on heading into
- 20:03Speaker 4: that game, then you throw in that it's Aaron judge,
- 20:07Speaker 4: that's the time to be aggressive. You don't want to
- 20:09Speaker 4: just be firing off challenges just to be firing them off.
- 20:13Speaker 4: But if it fits the time and place criteria, yeah,
- 20:17Speaker 4: be ready to tap the head exactly.
- 20:21Speaker 1: So the Birds for loose twelve to one Monday night.
- 20:23Speaker 1: They have been swept for straight here against the Yankees,
- 20:25Speaker 1: and now it's onto Miami Birdland territory with you today,
- 20:29Speaker 1: A little bit more to do on this show, So
- 20:32Speaker 1: hang with us.
- 20:35Speaker 8: Big Bad Morning Show, Finny and Haney Inside Access Live
- 20:40Speaker 8: on YouTube weekdays six till six search Baltimore one o
- 20:43Speaker 8: five seven the Fan, Subscribe for daily Short's right to
- 20:46Speaker 8: your phone, and never miss which you missed one oh
- 20:49Speaker 8: five seven the Fan.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So a winning team needs twenty six active and probably
- 20:56Speaker 1: fifty guys over the year to perform at various times.
- 21:00Speaker 1: But I go back to what we talked about going
- 21:02Speaker 1: into the Yankee series. We're hoping the stars would step up.
- 21:05Speaker 1: They really didn't in this series outside of Alonzo five
- 21:08Speaker 1: for fourteen. He had a double and two homers, but
- 21:11Speaker 1: Adley was one for seventeen, Ward was one for ten,
- 21:14Speaker 1: Gunner was two for thirteen. I mean, you had all
- 21:16Speaker 1: that up yikes. So that's where it's got to start.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I think it's great to have Jeremiah Jackson doing what
- 21:23Speaker 1: he's doing, Tavaris Kobe had a little home run stretch,
- 21:27Speaker 1: and you need all that too, but it's going to
- 21:30Speaker 1: start with this group.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right, Steve.
- 21:33Speaker 3: I think all the guys on the team look up
- 21:35Speaker 3: to those guys and they expect them to kind of
- 21:38Speaker 3: be the leaders and just show them, show them the way,
- 21:41Speaker 3: show them how it's done, be the ones that set
- 21:43Speaker 3: the tone. And then when you have the other guys
- 21:45Speaker 3: pitch in, that makes it even better. So I think
- 21:47Speaker 3: that's that's pretty much what it boils down to, is
- 21:49Speaker 3: you want your stars perform at the level you expect
- 21:52Speaker 3: them to and everybody kind of follows in. When you
- 21:54Speaker 3: think about this offense, if you had the you know,
- 21:57Speaker 3: the guys at the top of the lineup performing to
- 21:59Speaker 3: their career norms, then you're throwing Jeremi Jackson, then you're
- 22:02Speaker 3: throwing Tavares what he's done.
- 22:04Speaker 2: You're thrown all these guys and what they add to it.
- 22:07Speaker 3: I think the record looks way different because they've had
- 22:09Speaker 3: so many close games early in the season. You have
- 22:12Speaker 3: those guys performing where do you expect them to or
- 22:14Speaker 3: what you have come to expect from those guys. I
- 22:17Speaker 3: think this record looks way different, and they set the
- 22:20Speaker 3: tone and the rest of the guys kind of just
- 22:21Speaker 3: follow behind and it makes their job easier.
- 22:24Speaker 2: When those guys are doing what they do.
- 22:27Speaker 5: It boils down to just a couple things.
- 22:29Speaker 8: For me.
- 22:30Speaker 4: The stars got to be stars, the guys that you
- 22:33Speaker 4: were talking about. But then it gets into a season
- 22:35Speaker 4: long issue where you can't beat yourself. Guys, when you're
- 22:40Speaker 4: struggling as much as the Orioles are struggling right now,
- 22:43Speaker 4: you can't give up unearned runs. You had the Leo
- 22:46Speaker 4: di Taveres throwing error where Ben McDonald I thought that
- 22:49Speaker 4: he was right, maybe Gunner Henderson could have taken a
- 22:51Speaker 4: step in or two to feel that relay throw more clean.
- 22:57Speaker 4: That caused the runner to go from second to third.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Bellinger ends up hitting the sack fly unearned run there.
- 23:04Speaker 4: There was a wild pitch by Shane Boase in the
- 23:06Speaker 4: sixth inning where it really got away from them in
- 23:09Speaker 4: that inning and that led to an unearned run there.
- 23:13Speaker 4: You can't beat yourself when you're going through these type
- 23:16Speaker 4: of struggles. You have to avoid the self inflicted wounds.
- 23:22Speaker 1: So hopefully they start to get some things right here
- 23:25Speaker 1: in Miami. Then they played the Athletics at home. Then
- 23:28Speaker 1: they play, oh, by the way, the Yankees again in
- 23:30Speaker 1: a week, so they're coming back to Baltimore and losing
- 23:34Speaker 1: to them on the home field will be worse, and
- 23:36Speaker 1: losing in the Bronx although it's never good to lose
- 23:39Speaker 1: to the Yankees. So they got some things to fix here.
- 23:43Speaker 1: What's it like, Brad, do you think for those guys
- 23:45Speaker 1: with now we're in a social media age which you
- 23:48Speaker 1: saw at the end of your career, Probably not to
- 23:50Speaker 1: the extent these guys do. Now the whole town is
- 23:54Speaker 1: screaming for firings, change trades, do this. It's a reaction.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It's a fish ball. I feel it as a media guy.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I'm not even part of the team, but fans are
- 24:05Speaker 1: screaming at me as if I'm on the team. And
- 24:07Speaker 1: so this is and Tim, you get it on the radio.
- 24:10Speaker 1: It's crazy right now, and amidst that they have to
- 24:15Speaker 1: try to win.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Yeah, the biggest advice is get off of social media,
- 24:20Speaker 3: like it's not gonna help anything that's going on right now.
- 24:23Speaker 3: You're gonna hear a lot of opinions from a lot
- 24:25Speaker 3: of people that don't really understand what's going on in
- 24:27Speaker 3: the inner workings of the team. And at the end
- 24:30Speaker 3: of the day, it's not going to help your mental
- 24:32Speaker 3: well being. It's not going to help you perform better
- 24:34Speaker 3: on the field. I mean I would drag myself into
- 24:37Speaker 3: it sometimes too, after bad Adams going there and look
- 24:39Speaker 3: at some of the comments and it's like, why why
- 24:41Speaker 3: would I do that to myself? Why would I put
- 24:43Speaker 3: myself through that. It's just it's on your phone. You
- 24:46Speaker 3: have a lot of downtime, and it's just kind of
- 24:47Speaker 3: one of those things that just kind of pops up
- 24:49Speaker 3: and all, let me check it out. But like, it's
- 24:51Speaker 3: not going to do any good. It's not going to
- 24:53Speaker 3: help you. I mean, the guys that are in that
- 24:56Speaker 3: clubhouse all have your back, the coaching staff all have
- 24:58Speaker 3: your back. You want to talk to somebody about your
- 25:00Speaker 3: performance or whatever, go talk to those guys.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Hear what they have to say.
- 25:03Speaker 3: They're going to give you something that will at least
- 25:05Speaker 3: give you some feedback on the field. And if it
- 25:08Speaker 3: could be positive, it could be negative. But either way,
- 25:10Speaker 3: you're gonna get some reinforcement of what you think you
- 25:13Speaker 3: might need to work on, what you need to do better.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And kind of just stick to that.
- 25:16Speaker 3: It's just stay with those guys in the clubhouse and
- 25:18Speaker 3: kind of just keep the noise out because it's not
- 25:20Speaker 3: going to help. And at this point, who knows this
- 25:22Speaker 3: team could be in the World Series, Like you said,
- 25:24Speaker 3: so at this point it's hearing all these negative comments
- 25:27Speaker 3: or what people might have to say.
- 25:28Speaker 2: It's just not going to do anything good.
- 25:30Speaker 3: And it's kind of just stay off it and just
- 25:31Speaker 3: put your head down and go out there and play.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Every day rad Steve brings up the radio side of it,
- 25:37Speaker 4: and Steve's been.
- 25:38Speaker 5: Doing it for a while.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Steve has gotten his fair share of crazy callers after games,
- 25:42Speaker 4: and obviously we're taking calls on the show yesterday, and
- 25:46Speaker 4: of course it's people all this team needs a wake
- 25:49Speaker 4: up call, they need a kick in the butt, something
- 25:52Speaker 4: like DFA, this guy, send.
- 25:54Speaker 5: Down this guy.
- 25:55Speaker 4: And I just wonder, as a former player, like is
- 26:01Speaker 4: that a wake up call?
- 26:02Speaker 5: Is that something that is overblown?
- 26:05Speaker 4: Is there even an instance throughout your career that you
- 26:09Speaker 4: can think of where, oh man, this guy gets sent down?
- 26:11Speaker 5: I really get a step. Yeah, I think is that
- 26:17Speaker 5: a thing at all?
- 26:19Speaker 3: Honestly, I when you send me that Texas morning to
- 26:22Speaker 3: kind of think about it, there's not a single move
- 26:24Speaker 3: I can remember that kind of like send a shockwave
- 26:27Speaker 3: through the clubhouse. And was like, man, I that was like,
- 26:30Speaker 3: that's a big time wake up call kind of thing.
- 26:32Speaker 3: I mean throughout the season, guys are dfad obviously it's
- 26:34Speaker 3: sent down, And I said, it's it's kind of one
- 26:37Speaker 3: of those things where us in the bullpen we kind
- 26:40Speaker 3: of pay attention more to it, I think than even
- 26:42Speaker 3: the position players or other guys on the team because
- 26:45Speaker 3: it's usually one of us that are getting sent down
- 26:47Speaker 3: or dfaid or something like that. So a lot of
- 26:50Speaker 3: times when a move is made, it's this is gonna
- 26:53Speaker 3: sound weird to have them saying it, But half the
- 26:56Speaker 3: team might not even realize it until the game starts
- 26:58Speaker 3: because everybody's so into like doing their own work, what's
- 27:01Speaker 3: going on. Unless it's one of your like really good
- 27:03Speaker 3: buddies on the team, you're not really gonna be affected
- 27:06Speaker 3: by it or know that it's even happening until the
- 27:08Speaker 3: game starts and you kind of look down the bench
- 27:11Speaker 3: and see this guy and it's like, yeah, well, he
- 27:13Speaker 3: got sent out or he got dfa'ed. So I understand
- 27:16Speaker 3: what the fans are saying when they talk about that.
- 27:17Speaker 3: It's kind of, you know, they need a wake up call,
- 27:20Speaker 3: they need this, they need that.
- 27:21Speaker 2: But it's I just want to know where who would
- 27:24Speaker 2: you send down or who would you call up.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Or what move would you make that would send a
- 27:30Speaker 3: shockwave but not hurt the team out on the field.
- 27:32Speaker 2: So it's it's kind of one of those things.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Like I said, I understand where the fans are coming from,
- 27:36Speaker 3: but it's not really going to do much in the clubhouse.
- 27:38Speaker 3: These guys are locked in on what they're doing every day,
- 27:40Speaker 3: and they're so focused on their work that half the
- 27:42Speaker 3: time they might not even know that this shockwave of
- 27:45Speaker 3: a move was made.
- 27:46Speaker 5: And that was my rebuttal right, where, Okay, you want
- 27:50Speaker 5: to send so and so down, you want to DFA, Well,
- 27:52Speaker 5: who are you bringing up?
- 27:54Speaker 9: Like just doing that just to do it, and it's
- 27:58Speaker 9: a detriment to the team, and what are you really
- 28:01Speaker 9: sending you know, Like like I get it, I get
- 28:04Speaker 9: the frustration, and and you know, we're frustrated watching it.
- 28:07Speaker 4: But you know what, I'm sure the guys at the
- 28:09Speaker 4: clubhouse are twenty times more frustrated than any of the
- 28:13Speaker 4: fans or we are. Like they get it, they're living it,
- 28:16Speaker 4: you know, we're just watching it.
- 28:18Speaker 9: And I think it's just important to kind of refocus
- 28:22Speaker 9: in that way.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think also too.
- 28:25Speaker 3: I think a lot of fans want to see a reaction,
- 28:27Speaker 3: but it can go both ways, you know, Like you
- 28:30Speaker 3: see a frustrated reaction, it's like, always got to keep
- 28:32Speaker 3: a level head. You don't show a reaction. I want
- 28:34Speaker 3: to see fire from this guy. So it's like, it's
- 28:36Speaker 3: just like this thing you can't win, and really you
- 28:39Speaker 3: want to have everybody. It's such a long season. We've
- 28:41Speaker 3: talked about a billion times, but it's such a long season.
- 28:44Speaker 3: You have to keep a level head. I know you
- 28:46Speaker 3: want to see you guys frustrated. I know you want
- 28:47Speaker 3: to see guys mad. I can tell you from experience.
- 28:50Speaker 3: These guys are frustrated. They're mad, they're upset, they're not
- 28:53Speaker 3: happy with their performance. I've been there before more times
- 28:57Speaker 3: than I like to admit. But at the end of
- 28:58Speaker 3: the day, you have to come to the field the
- 29:00Speaker 3: next day as levelheaded as possible and ready to win
- 29:03Speaker 3: that day's game. That's really all you can do. That's
- 29:05Speaker 3: all you can control. At this point, the four game
- 29:08Speaker 3: series is gone. Yes, they got their butts kicked. Every
- 29:11Speaker 3: single guy in that team knows they got their busts kicked.
- 29:13Speaker 3: But today, you know what, it's a brand new game.
- 29:16Speaker 3: You have to go out there and when the ball
- 29:18Speaker 3: or especially in the bullpen like for Mian since what
- 29:21Speaker 3: your name is called, you have to be ready and
- 29:23Speaker 3: if you have a lead, you have to keep the lead.
- 29:25Speaker 3: If you go out there in a blowout, keep the
- 29:27Speaker 3: game where it's at. It's just kind of what it
- 29:29Speaker 3: is on a daily basis, and that's really the true
- 29:32Speaker 3: grind of playing at the major league level is every
- 29:34Speaker 3: day your zero and zero, your ERA zero. You have
- 29:38Speaker 3: to go out there and kind of keep that mentality
- 29:39Speaker 3: the whole season. If you don't, you find yourself way
- 29:42Speaker 3: behind the eight ball, and next thing you know, you
- 29:44Speaker 3: look up at the scoreboard and you're like, man, I
- 29:45Speaker 3: have a thirteen year ra man I'm hitting one fifty
- 29:48Speaker 3: and he just can never. You just can't play baseball
- 29:51Speaker 3: that way. It's I know what the fans want to see,
- 29:53Speaker 3: but it's just really hard to play a six month
- 29:56Speaker 3: season that way.
- 29:58Speaker 1: And I will add this, the shockwave move was firing
- 30:02Speaker 1: Brandon Hyde last matter. The team got a little better
- 30:06Speaker 1: and finished well short of the playoffs, and they're still floundering.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Did it work. It really hasn't to this point. Doesn't
- 30:12Speaker 1: mean it won't. But Brandon Hide did a pretty arm
- 30:15Speaker 1: good job and that clubhouse was stunned because they really
- 30:19Speaker 1: liked and respected him, and they realized they helped get
- 30:21Speaker 1: him fired and they couldn't get him back. So that
- 30:24Speaker 1: was the shockwave move. Doesn't always work, but something needs
- 30:28Speaker 1: to work for the Orioles. We're all in agreement on that.
- 30:30Speaker 1: We just don't have answers and they don't either. Right
- 30:32Speaker 1: now doesn't mean a week from now when we're taping
- 30:35Speaker 1: the show, the outlook might be very different, let's hope.
- 30:39Speaker 1: So it'll be more fun to talk about another Birdland territory,
- 30:44Speaker 1: another good one. You guys are doing a great job.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I really enjoyed doing this with Brad and Tim and
- 30:49Speaker 1: enjoy all the fans checking us out and please subscribe
- 30:52Speaker 1: to our channel. Helps us a lot, So for Brad
- 30:55Speaker 1: and Tim Steve checking out. We'll talk to you next
- 30:57Speaker 1: time on Birdland Territory in
