- 1:08Speaker 1: Hey, Jake.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Thanks for having me on, man. How are you?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Bill, we're good. Obviously, as I'm sure you know, and
- 1:13Speaker 2: I want to get into just to touch it. I
- 1:15Speaker 2: shared it. You put out a re-ranking, and I like this,
- 1:18Speaker 2: re-ranking SEC quarterbacks heading into October. And Mississippi State fans
- 1:23Speaker 2: will be pleased. Ole Miss fans will be pleased. But
- 1:25Speaker 2: let's jump right into it. I know you're on limited
- 1:26Speaker 2: time today. Mississippi State, Alabama, looks like it's going to
- 1:29Speaker 2: be a wet track on Saturday. Your thoughts on everything
- 1:33Speaker 2: going on in Starkville with Kamario Taylor as they take
- 1:35Speaker 2: on their toughest opponent yet in Alabama?
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I mean, he's been phenomenal, especially throwing
- 1:43Speaker 3: the ball down the field when you look at his
- 1:45Speaker 3: numbers on TFF. They just the explosiveness of the offense.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I do think one thing, and I'm sure you guys
- 1:51Speaker 3: have talked about it. They'll have to trim the penalties
- 1:54Speaker 3: this weekend. You don't want that to catch you. I mean,
- 1:57Speaker 3: they're on that side of the, the third sheet, if
- 2:01Speaker 3: you will, the SPS penalties teams with most penalties. So
- 2:05Speaker 3: they'll have to clean that up. But I think Kamara
- 2:07Speaker 3: has been fantastic. Trinidad has been fantastic. And Keelan Russell,
- 2:11Speaker 3: the Alabama quarterback, I mean, right there, not the, I
- 2:13Speaker 3: still want you to click on the article, but those
- 2:16Speaker 3: are the top three quarterbacks. And I'll tell you what, Jake,
- 2:18Speaker 3: I didn't have much hesitation with those three. They've all
- 2:22Speaker 3: been great.
- 2:23Speaker 2: No, they have. They really have. When you look at
- 2:25Speaker 2: the game on Saturday, weather permitting, the chances for Mississippi
- 2:30Speaker 2: State to pull this thing off and get to 5-0,
- 2:33Speaker 2: do you give it 50%, less than 50%, a little
- 2:35Speaker 2: more than 50%? I mean, 50%.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Maybe a little less than 50, given where the spreads
- 2:41Speaker 3: at and it's still Alabama. But I mean, man, if that, uh, uh,
- 2:45Speaker 3: environment takes over in Starkville, I said with the thing
- 2:49Speaker 3: I said without hesitation, I'm sure your callers would agree that, uh, I,
- 2:53Speaker 3: this was probably the biggest game for them since Dak
- 2:55Speaker 3: Prescott had them at number one and they played Alabama, uh,
- 2:58Speaker 3: 14 now Alabama team was good. And this Alabama team's
- 3:04Speaker 3: really good. But I think the name recognition on some
- 3:06Speaker 3: of the Alabama guys now, uh, might be just the same.
- 3:09Speaker 3: So it's, uh, an exciting opportunity for Mississippi state, no doubt. And, and, and, and,
- 3:16Speaker 3: you know, like, so they win this one, you start
- 3:18Speaker 3: to look at the rest of their schedule and you're like, man,
- 3:21Speaker 3: they're going to shut, make a play out. Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 2: There's no doubt with winnable games against Auburn and Vanderbilt
- 3:27Speaker 2: at home. And of course, Tennessee tech and then Oklahoma
- 3:29Speaker 2: and some others, um, this will kind of pair our
- 3:32Speaker 2: sec chatter, uh, you know, looking at some of your
- 3:35Speaker 2: core pre, you know, kind of re-rankings, um, with Taylor
- 3:39Speaker 2: and Chambliss and Russell at the top, and, of course,
- 3:41Speaker 2: Gunner Stockton at Georgia. Let me ask you about Georgia.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Georgia hasn't really played a quality opponent yet. I mean,
- 3:47Speaker 2: Oklahoma was supposed to be that, and we can kind
- 3:50Speaker 2: of talk Sooners and Dawgs together. Two guys go in
- 3:54Speaker 2: opposite ways. Gunner Stockton continues to rise in college football
- 3:58Speaker 2: and do what he's supposed to do. John Mateer, Bill,
- 4:01Speaker 2: I feel sorry for the guy. I don't know what's
- 4:02Speaker 2: happened to him.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, it's been a rough season. They struggled
- 4:07Speaker 3: to run the football. His numbers aren't, like, terrible. It's
- 4:11Speaker 3: just the turnovers have come at the wrong time. Then
- 4:14Speaker 3: it's obviously a bad turnover against Georgia. Now, in fairness,
- 4:17Speaker 3: I think Georgia's going to do that to a lot
- 4:18Speaker 3: of people this year, and they're playing very well. I've
- 4:22Speaker 3: kind of phrased it all week, Jake, that I know
- 4:26Speaker 3: Texas has the best resume in the country, and I
- 4:29Speaker 3: won't say they shouldn't be number one based on resume,
- 4:32Speaker 3: but but I kind of think Georgia is the best
- 4:34Speaker 3: team in the country right now. And, you know, we'll
- 4:37Speaker 3: see how they go through the SEC grinder. It continues
- 4:40Speaker 3: this week against Vanderbilt. But Oklahoma certainly, you know, I
- 4:44Speaker 3: don't know. I mean, you can give me some feedback,
- 4:46Speaker 3: and I take constructive feedback as well. Like, I put
- 4:49Speaker 3: him here, I think, 13 or 14, and again, it
- 4:51Speaker 3: was like, I feel bad, but he's playing like the
- 4:55Speaker 3: 13th or 14th best quarterback in the SEC. Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 2: No, I totally agree. You know, I put out what
- 5:01Speaker 2: I call my eye test each week, and I've got
- 5:04Speaker 2: Oklahoma right there at the bottom or close to the bottom,
- 5:06Speaker 2: you know, Arkansas at the very bottom. You know, and
- 5:10Speaker 2: that's indicative of what John Mateer's done. And your bottom
- 5:12Speaker 2: guy is Marcel Reed. I don't disagree with that. I mean,
- 5:16Speaker 2: he's a guy that was supposed to have that pop-off season.
- 5:18Speaker 2: He's got six touchdowns, four interceptions. And, boy, Texas A
- 5:22Speaker 2: & M, they look lost.
- 5:25Speaker 3: It's been a surprising part of the season. Again, they'll
- 5:28Speaker 3: play Arkansas this week, and there's a chance for him
- 5:31Speaker 3: to claw up a little bit, but at the 2-2
- 5:33Speaker 3: and just the turnovers, lack of consistent running game, defense
- 5:38Speaker 3: isn't quite the same. Now, granted, they did lose Cassius Howell,
- 5:42Speaker 3: who's making some plays for the Bengals right now on
- 5:45Speaker 3: that defense, so you can't control some of that, but
- 5:48Speaker 3: it's been an interesting up-and-down season for them. And then
- 5:52Speaker 3: the other one I wanted to mention was We have
- 5:54Speaker 3: Arch 8th, 7th or 8th, right in the middle there.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And some people might overreact to that. I think Arch
- 6:01Speaker 3: Manning's been fine. He hasn't been. It just speaks to
- 6:05Speaker 3: the level of quality of play of the quarterbacks within
- 6:07Speaker 3: the conference. I've been impressed, and I know Mississippi State
- 6:10Speaker 3: won the game. I've been impressed with Austin Simmons. at Missouri,
- 6:14Speaker 3: you know, 11 touchdowns, no interceptions, making plays, and they
- 6:18Speaker 3: would probably have been even better had they had a
- 6:20Speaker 3: Mod Hardy. I think he's having a nice season with
- 6:23Speaker 3: the Tigers. No, I agree.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And it'll be interesting because they take on Florida this weekend,
- 6:28Speaker 2: another marquee matchup in the SEC. And, Bill, what do
- 6:31Speaker 2: we make of the dismantling of Ole Miss? You know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: Aaron Filo, who's number seven on your list, seven touchdowns,
- 6:36Speaker 2: two interceptions. And when you look at Jaden Ball and
- 6:39Speaker 2: the way that he can run the football, I mean,
- 6:40Speaker 2: you have to make the argument he's the best back
- 6:42Speaker 2: in college football right now. But is this kind of
- 6:45Speaker 2: a game going to Missouri where, you know, we saw
- 6:47Speaker 2: Auburn put some points up on Florida. We saw Florida
- 6:50Speaker 2: play well at the Swamp. What do they do on
- 6:52Speaker 2: the road this week at Missouri?
- 6:53Speaker 3: You know, it's a really good question. I think Aaron
- 6:59Speaker 3: Filo's played well. John Summerall's been very impressive in year one.
- 7:05Speaker 3: He's very charismatic. It's just, it's kind of nice. I mean, I'm,
- 7:09Speaker 3: as you know, I don't have a dog in the hunt, but, uh,
- 7:12Speaker 3: it's kind of cool to see Florida back on the
- 7:14Speaker 3: map a little bit and the swamp rock and Bob's
- 7:17Speaker 3: been amazing. The rushing attack, but this is what Summerall
- 7:21Speaker 3: did at Tulane with Makai Hughes. It's what he did
- 7:24Speaker 3: at Troy before that with a collection of running backs.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I think he had Monte Vidal for a minute. Um,
- 7:30Speaker 3: But they know how to run the football and he
- 7:33Speaker 3: preaches toughness and he backs it up. But here's the
- 7:36Speaker 3: thing with the SEC. When you have a weekend like
- 7:39Speaker 3: last weekend, when you have four games with ranked teams,
- 7:41Speaker 3: somebody has to lose these games. So I really believe
- 7:46Speaker 3: that they're going to test the nine and three theory.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Like with all this cannibalization, do you get a nine
- 7:53Speaker 3: and three SEC team in the playoff that maybe doesn't
- 7:55Speaker 3: get to the conference championship game? I would say yes,
- 7:59Speaker 3: based on the quality of the games that are being played.
- 8:03Speaker 2: We're visiting with Bill Bender. Of course, you can find
- 8:05Speaker 2: him on X at BillBender92. Check him out at the
- 8:08Speaker 2: Sporting News. Bill, we've got a couple minutes left here
- 8:10Speaker 2: with you. I know you've got another appointment. We'll get
- 8:11Speaker 2: you right there. Oregon, they get the win over USC.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Does that put them back in the playoff conversation? What
- 8:17Speaker 2: does this mean for Lincoln Riley taking another big loss?
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, let's start with Oregon. I mean, impressive Dylan Raiola.
- 8:25Speaker 3: He was amazing in place of Dante Moore under control
- 8:29Speaker 3: through the really good touchdown pass that DeCorey Moore had
- 8:32Speaker 3: a great conversion to Evan Stewart. Just speaks to what
- 8:36Speaker 3: Dan Lanning's able to do, knowing that his quarterbacks this
- 8:40Speaker 3: year have 14 touchdowns, zero interceptions. I think that's been
- 8:43Speaker 3: awesome to see. USC's got a culture problem. and you're
- 8:49Speaker 3: seeing that being written, but the reaction after the dirty hit,
- 8:53Speaker 3: even in the announcer's booth. Now I will say this, Jake, I, I,
- 8:57Speaker 3: one of the reasons I'd love college football is I
- 9:00Speaker 3: don't mind a little, you know, Homer ism in the booth.
- 9:03Speaker 3: If you know what I mean, I kind of liked that,
- 9:07Speaker 3: but they took it maybe a little too far on
- 9:09Speaker 3: that hit. And then they get beaten a big game again.
- 9:15Speaker 3: And they play Penn State next week, and they play
- 9:17Speaker 3: Washington this week. And I'm wondering if the heat isn't
- 9:20Speaker 3: going to turn up on Lincoln Riley a little bit. But,
- 9:22Speaker 3: you know, like I said, I always enjoy– if I'm
- 9:24Speaker 3: listening to like a Georgia-Tennessee game in the car and
- 9:28Speaker 3: the Tennessee announcer takes a swipe at Georgia, I always
- 9:31Speaker 3: laugh at it. But I guess I'm old school like that.
- 9:33Speaker 2: No, I'm the same way. I am the same way.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Bill Bender, make sure to get him on X. And,
- 9:37Speaker 2: of course, check him out at the Sporting News. Bill,
- 9:39Speaker 2: thank you so much for joining us on A Short Window.
