- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Idolatry is fashioned in many ways today.
- 0:40We don't have shrines and temples of of some ridiculous
- 0:44Pagan deity around our necks. At least I hope we don't.
- 0:47But idolatry is in the form of a lot of other things.
- 0:51It can be our material wealth. It can be something we own that
- 0:57we love and that every time we see it, we just smile and say
- 1:01that's mine, you know? And I'm going to give hours a
- 1:05day to whatever I think is important.
- 1:07That's mine. It could be making sure you see
- 1:11every football game possible on Sundays, or maybe it's never
- 1:14missing a single CrossFit session.
- 1:17You have ATV show that you claim as yours.
- 1:20Or maybe you own a car that you can't stand to have any
- 1:23scratches on. Pastor Clark makes it clear
- 1:26today that idolatry in today's time is different than Bible
- 1:30times. And yet it's kind of the same.
- 1:32It's giving your heart and your devotion over to something other
- 1:36than God. So take some time and think
- 1:39about this. What or who are you worshipping
- 1:44now? Here's Pastor Clark in the book
- 1:45of Acts Chapter 19 with today's edition of Living Waters of
- 1:50Grace. Acts chapter 19.
- 1:53We're going to look at the verse 18 before we go into today's
- 1:57text. And many who had believed came
- 2:00confessing and telling their deeds.
- 2:02Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their
- 2:05books together and burned them in the sight of all.
- 2:08And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled 50,000
- 2:12pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord grew
- 2:15mightily and prevailed. Verse 21.
- 2:18And when these things were accomplished, then Paul's going
- 2:22to begin to talk about what's next in his life.
- 2:25This is a big deal. And what happened here and what
- 2:27we read about Whenever the Holy Spirit works in our lives, there
- 2:32is a transition from one way of living to a new way of living.
- 2:36And I loved it when Pastor Lewis was teaching us in First
- 2:40Thessalonians because there's a verse there that really ties
- 2:44into what happened to these people in Ephesus.
- 2:47Same thing with the Thessalonian believers in First Thessalonians
- 2:5019. It said what manner of entry we
- 2:55had to you. In other words, the apostles are
- 2:57saying how the Word impacted him and how you turn to God from
- 3:01idols to serve the living and true God.
- 3:04So conversion or repentance or belief in faith in Jesus Christ
- 3:10is just not like this mental thing we we do.
- 3:14So we go to heaven. I mean, that's a good thing that
- 3:16we go to heaven if we trust in Christ.
- 3:18But it's much deeper than this believing so that we might have
- 3:21a better life. Now, the purpose of coming to
- 3:24Christ is a term from the old way of life, the way we used to
- 3:27live and the way we used to be wired in other, in other words,
- 3:32and how we thought about life and what we did in our lives,
- 3:34the things we regret now that we're Christian.
- 3:37So true repentance is always a change of mind.
- 3:41You change the way you're living.
- 3:43And even to this day when I study the Scriptures and when I
- 3:46pray and I have my time with the Lord, I'm always open.
- 3:49I want him to show me things in my life that He wants to still
- 3:52change. It's not like once we become
- 3:54Christians, we don't need to change, right?
- 3:56There's this continual transformation by the Holy
- 4:00Spirit to conform us more to the image and likeness of Jesus.
- 4:03So when I whenever I'm talking to the Lord and and thinking
- 4:07about things I say to him, is there anything in my life right
- 4:11now that isn't the way it should be that you want to change, that
- 4:15you want me to to look at differently and respond to you
- 4:19differently. And there's never really a time
- 4:23where he doesn't share something with me that's helpful to help
- 4:26me want to be more like him and to let go of some things that
- 4:31sometimes get in the way of my relationship with him.
- 4:34And that's that intimacy, that relationship we have with Jesus.
- 4:37And as we were worshipping, I, I was thinking back there that
- 4:42it's so incredible that each of us can have a personal
- 4:46relationship with the Lord that I've never physically, outside
- 4:52of a spiritual touch, touch the Lord.
- 4:56I, I haven't seen him as, as a human being other than the lives
- 5:01and the writings of the Scripture.
- 5:03I don't see him like I, I see you physically at this point in
- 5:07time, but one day I will see him.
- 5:09The Bible says we'll see him face to face and we will see him
- 5:13and we shall become like him because we shall see him as he
- 5:17is. He truly is.
- 5:18So one day we will have that privilege of physically
- 5:22encountering Jesus as a man and as a as a risen savior when we
- 5:27go to heaven. But what's incredible for you
- 5:32and I, when we think about this privilege we have to have this
- 5:35communion with the Lord, is that we can talk with him moment by
- 5:39moment, That we can lay our head down in the pillow at night when
- 5:43we're troubled and, and talk to him and he listens and he
- 5:46responds to us when we're overwhelmed by life and this
- 5:51having difficulty with whatever we might be going through, we
- 5:55can ask for his help and he'll help us.
- 5:57He's he's always near. I love what it tells us in
- 6:01Hebrews that we don't have a high priest who cannot be
- 6:04touched with the feeling of our weaknesses, our infirmities, but
- 6:07was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
- 6:11And then the writer says that we can have boldness to enter into
- 6:14the holy place by the blood of Jesus, this relationship of
- 6:18Christ shed blood that enables sinners to go into the presence
- 6:22of God and not be rejected. And we can go into that throne
- 6:26room of grace and find mercy and help in our time of need.
- 6:30Isn't that wonderful? You don't have to come to church
- 6:34in your time of need. You can go right to Jesus
- 6:36wherever you are, in your car, in your house, in your
- 6:39apartment, in your bedroom, and you know, your leisure time.
- 6:42You, you can go to the Lord 24/7.
- 6:44And how privileged we are to have that relationship.
- 6:48And I hope and I trust that you're taking advantage of that
- 6:51relationship. The Lord has provided for you
- 6:54through his death, burial, and resurrection, that you can have
- 6:57a real conversation with God and he'll have a real conversation
- 7:01back with you. That's priceless.
- 7:04And this is something that the world doesn't know about.
- 7:07We see the headlines this past week of this tremendous,
- 7:10horrific assault on this young man who didn't do anything other
- 7:15than run, and he was assaulted and brutalized and murdered for
- 7:21no good reason. And this is just a tippity
- 7:24iceberg. We get the the news all the
- 7:26time. I mean, I'm reading about
- 7:27husbands shooting wives, wives killing husbands, riots, mobs,
- 7:32you know, fighting, you know, out in the streets and trying to
- 7:37force us as Christians to accept godless ideologies and, and, and
- 7:43basically wanting to shut us up and to tell us that our opinions
- 7:47don't matter and, and in regard to marriage or sexuality or
- 7:51whatever. And so we're living in times
- 7:54when you study this with me today, understand that this is
- 7:59going on today too, Not to the degree that it was an Ephesus in
- 8:04America. Pray that it never will been in
- 8:07Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Emirate Republic,
- 8:13Pakistan, India, you know, China, all these places in the
- 8:17world, people are being brutally tortured for their faith in
- 8:22Jesus Christ. And so as we study this, we have
- 8:26to understand the courage that Paul had.
- 8:29Paul was not afraid of a fight. God gave him the strength to
- 8:32persevere. He always had this desire to
- 8:35take the gospel to wherever he could take it.
- 8:38And he always had a great attitude.
- 8:40He was always positive, he was always joyful.
- 8:43He had his time of struggles. He talked about despairing of
- 8:46life itself at times and being brutalized himself and people
- 8:50throwing rocks at him and that kind of stuff.
- 8:52But it never stopped him from what it was that God called him
- 8:56to do. And I think about your call as a
- 9:00Christian mind. As a Christian, God has certain
- 9:03purposes for your life and relationships He wants you to
- 9:07have with people. And lots of times those
- 9:10relationships will end up in conflict because of your
- 9:13position regarding who Jesus Christ is and how you live.
- 9:17Some people will reject you, some people won't like you, some
- 9:20people want to argue with you, some people want to slander you
- 9:23or whatever. At this point in time, you know,
- 9:26they might even want to fight you or beat you or whatever.
- 9:30I, I, I pray that's not the case in our time.
- 9:32But we have to be ready for whatever may come down the road.
- 9:36And we have to be willing to stand as the apostle Paul stood
- 9:40and those who served with him in this particular time.
- 9:44So Paul is purposing in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit speaking
- 9:48to Paul about the next goal that the Lord had for him.
- 9:52That is, he's beginning to complete his ministry after a
- 9:54couple years in Ephesus. He's been teaching for two years
- 9:58in that Bible school. The school tyrannis 8 hours, 6
- 10:02hours, 8 hours a day for six days a week for two to three
- 10:06years. If you were in that place with
- 10:08him, you would be out on the streets sharing what it is you
- 10:13have learned because it was just so living and so fresh and so
- 10:16alive and so anointed of God. People's lives are being
- 10:19transformed to the degree and it was impacting the commerce of
- 10:23this Pagan city in a very negative way.
- 10:27And it says when he had passed through Macedonia and Arcade to
- 10:30go to Jerusalem, saying after I've been there, I must also see
- 10:35Rome. So already Paul has got his eyes
- 10:37on other opportunities to minister, and so it says in
- 10:41verse 22, so he sent into Macedonia two of those who
- 10:44ministered to him, Timothy and Rastus, but he himself stayed in
- 10:48Asia for a time. Now, there's a lot of things
- 10:51that go on when we study the Bible.
- 10:53You sort of have to be willing to look at some other passages
- 10:56in order to have some things make sense because he's talking
- 10:59about a lot of geography here. But if you looked at these maps,
- 11:02you would see how, how close these different places were and
- 11:07how you were able to get to these different places in a
- 11:10period of days or weeks or whatever, using boats or donkeys
- 11:13or walking, whatever. And so there was no part in that
- 11:18known world at the time that Paul wasn't anxious to get to to
- 11:24do the ministry. And so this this issue here of
- 11:28these different places he's mentioning, Paul wrote to the
- 11:32Corinthian church from the city of Ephesus.
- 11:35And the Corinthians is another book in the Bible we'll get to
- 11:38eventually. He also wrote from Rome to
- 11:43Ephesus. So why was he interested in
- 11:46going to Rome? And I want to look at Romans
- 11:49chapter 15 for a minute. And this all ties together with
- 11:53Paul's great heart of missions. It says in the heading there
- 11:56plan to visit Rome. For this reason I also have been
- 11:58much hindered from coming to you.
- 12:00But now I'm no longer having a place in these parts and having
- 12:03a great desire of these many years to come to you whenever I
- 12:06journey to Spain. So not any was he planning on
- 12:09going to Rome, but he eventually wanted to get to Spain.
- 12:12I don't know if he ever got there or not.
- 12:13We don't have any indication he did or didn't.
- 12:16But that was a plan. He says I shall come come to you
- 12:18for I hope to see you on my journey and to be helped on my
- 12:22way there by you. If first I may enjoy your
- 12:25company for a while. So Paul not, and he liked
- 12:27teaching, but he liked being around people like us so he
- 12:30could have fellowship with them because we would encourage him.
- 12:33But now I'm going to Jerusalem to minister to the Saints.
- 12:36Now, Jerusalem was in a time of famine and poverty.
- 12:40And so whenever we know about people who are in crisis,
- 12:44through missions, our own missionaries that we support, or
- 12:47through Calvary Chapel, that lets us know about different
- 12:50things that are going on in the world.
- 12:52We have the ability to budget part of what it is.
- 12:55It comes in through the offerings to go help people in
- 12:57crisis, even though we're not going to physically be there.
- 13:00And so Paul's going to Jerusalem to minister to the Saints for
- 13:03it, please those from Macedonia and IKEA to make a certain
- 13:07contribution for the poor among the Saints who are in Jerusalem.
- 13:11So Paul sending Timothy and Erasus to these places to
- 13:15receive the offerings that these cities had stored up for the
- 13:20help of those who are suffering in Jerusalem.
- 13:23And it says it pleased them indeed, and they are their
- 13:25debtors. For if the Gentiles have been
- 13:27partakers of the spiritual things, so in other words, they
- 13:31became believers because of Paul and the ministry and the Word
- 13:34and the gospel. Their duty now is also to
- 13:36minister to the people that helped them in material things.
- 13:40Therefore, when I performed this sealed to them this fruit, I
- 13:43shall go by way of you to Spain. But I know that when I come, I
- 13:48shall come in the fullness of the blessing of the gospel of
- 13:50Christ. So here we are reading about
- 13:53things an ethicist, but Paul spiritually multitasking like
- 13:57you and I do, you're thinking about maybe later what you're
- 14:00going to do and you know, is a Bengals going to win or the
- 14:04Chiefs and all these things are thinking about today, right?
- 14:06Really important stuff I must say, right?
- 14:09Depending on who you want to win, right, But you know, you're
- 14:13thinking about next week and family and people that you wish
- 14:17would come to church with you that haven't yet or people that
- 14:20you love that don't know the Lord yet.
- 14:21You have all these thoughts and you're thinking, well, I take
- 14:24this trip to this place one day and I see these friends or
- 14:27relatives or these coworkers. I'm going to tell them more
- 14:30about my faith and what Christ did for me.
- 14:33That's that's a good thing that the Holy Spirit is always
- 14:35putting things in our heart that we can think about doing in the
- 14:38days ahead, the further the gospel.
- 14:40But Paul, even though he's an Asian Ephesus, at this time,
- 14:44he's already thinking about all these other things that need to
- 14:47be accomplished. And 1st Corinthians is also
- 14:51tying into this. If you turn there, First
- 14:53Corinthians 16, I read verses one through 4 and Pauls talking
- 14:58about this collection that they're going to take to
- 15:00Jerusalem. Now concerning the collection
- 15:02for the Saints, as I've given orders to the churches of
- 15:05Galatia, so you must do also on the first day of the week, let
- 15:09each one of you lay something up aside, storing up as he may
- 15:12prosper, that there be no collections.
- 15:15When I came, when I come, and when I come, whomever you
- 15:18approve by your letters, I will send to bear your gift to
- 15:21Jerusalem. But if it is fitting that I go
- 15:23also, they will go with me. So, So these churches work
- 15:27together and obviously they gave offerings like we do, you know,
- 15:31monthly or weekly or however we do it online or anything
- 15:34offering boxes outside. So that like if there's a big
- 15:37issue here, and I've never had to do this, nor has Lewis not,
- 15:40nor do we ever want to do it. We're not interested in begging
- 15:44for money or asking for money. You guys give liberally as God
- 15:48is purpose in your heart for God loves a cheerful giver.
- 15:52He doesn't want to manipulate any of us.
- 15:54He doesn't want to force us. That's a privilege that we give
- 15:58what it is that the Lord prospers us with.
- 16:00But whenever we have a need or a missionary rights us or we have
- 16:03something in our heart of benevolence or crisis in the
- 16:06church, we don't have to say, well, this family has this
- 16:09problem. We're going to take a special
- 16:10offering today so we can help this family or help these
- 16:14missionaries. Everything that comes into the
- 16:16church is put in a a general fund for George, who's the
- 16:20financial guy here to help us determine what it is we can
- 16:24budget and how we can help. And so the Lord has never not
- 16:27had funds in the storehouse for us to be able to use things for
- 16:30people and missionaries and struggles and people in in
- 16:33crisis and that kind of stuff. And this is all taught
- 16:36throughout the New Testament. So as Paul is working in
- 16:40Ephesus, he already has a heart in his mind.
- 16:43He's serving the believers in Ephesus, but he's concerned
- 16:46about the church in Jerusalem and he's also wanting to go
- 16:50visit these other places to see how they're doing since the
- 16:53churches have been established. That's a beautiful, beautiful
- 16:56thing to, to see how these things are all weaved together
- 16:59in the Scriptures. And, and about that time in
- 17:03verse 23, as as he's thinking and planning and and talking
- 17:06about the things ahead, there arose a great commotion about
- 17:11the way. The way was considered the name
- 17:14of the new group of followers of Jesus Christ.
- 17:18Yeah, The way represented John 14-6, where Jesus said I am the
- 17:22way, I am the truth. I'm the life.
- 17:24No man comes to the Father but through me.
- 17:27The way is the only way. There is only one way, right?
- 17:32His way. And he said, it's so clear.
- 17:34Aren't you glad he didn't say, well, I'm one of the ways, or
- 17:37this is something you should consider?
- 17:39There are other ways. No, he was real clear so we
- 17:41wouldn't be confused. Jesus is the only way, and we're
- 17:46not bigoted. We believe what he said and we
- 17:48know it's true because we found the truth in regard to our
- 17:52salvation is only wrought in the person, in the work of Jesus
- 17:56Christ. He's the only one that has
- 17:58conquered the grave. He's only the one that's
- 18:00overcome death. He's the only one that's
- 18:02sinless. He's the only one that's
- 18:04perfect, and He's the only one that could die on the cross to
- 18:08redeem us and save us and atone for our sins.
- 18:12And so these people are uptight about this issue of the way a
- 18:18lot of people are getting aggravated and why Verse 24 for
- 18:21a certain man named Demetrius, the silversmith who made silver
- 18:25shrines of Diana brought no small profit to the Craftsman.
- 18:29So this guy made his livelihood from making idols out of silver
- 18:35and crafting these little mini miniature gods, replicating the
- 18:39temple of the person of Diana the high priestess, if you may.
- 18:44And it was really a weird image and multi breasted woman.
- 18:48And the temple prostitutes at this temple of Diana would go in
- 18:52their short skirts and and have one breast exposed to represent
- 18:56the the deity of this Diana temple prostitutes.
- 18:59All kind of Pagan rituals and occultic things going on.
- 19:03I mean, the whole thing was crazy.
- 19:06What's happening is Paul and his preaching in the school at
- 19:09Tyrannis. People like us are there and all
- 19:12of a sudden maybe we had these little idols in our house or
- 19:16warm around our neck. Some people did that.
- 19:19All of a sudden we're hearing the word of God and the truth
- 19:22regarding Jesus Christ, and all of a sudden we want to get rid
- 19:25of these things, right? And that was the purpose of the
- 19:27fire and burning those things and throwing them away.
- 19:30This being free from it. Well, as a result of this
- 19:33happening in the community in the city of Ephesus, there was
- 19:36less people buying these things. So if you made good living by
- 19:40making these things, maybe you're selling, you know, 1000 a
- 19:43week or something. And all of a sudden you look at
- 19:45your numbers and now they're 600 a week and then they're 400 a
- 19:49week and then they're three. You know, you're, you're
- 19:51starting to get bothered, right? Because you know that what's
- 19:54happening in the city now is impacting your livelihood.
- 19:58So this is the purpose of why Demetrius is beginning to get
- 20:01this crowd together, because he made these silver shrines of
- 20:04Diana and it brought a lot of money to the Craftsman who were.
- 20:08Involved in it, it says in verse 24 he called them together with
- 20:12the workers of similar occupation.
- 20:14So he's getting all the people in the union together to tell
- 20:18them about what's going on and why the numbers are down and why
- 20:22the revenue is a lot less than what it once was.
- 20:26Because they probably didn't really quite grasp the impact
- 20:28that Christianity was having in the city of Ephesus.
- 20:31So he calls them together and he says, man, you know that we have
- 20:35our prosperity by this trade. This is how we make our
- 20:39livelihood. Moreover, you see in here that
- 20:42not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this
- 20:46Paul has persuaded and turned away many people saying that
- 20:50they are not gods which are made with hands.
- 20:54Now, Paul never once picketed in front of the temple of Diana.
- 20:58There's no indication that he was there with signs and, and,
- 21:02and telling everybody, don't go in there and don't do this.
- 21:04Don't do that. He was just teaching the word.
- 21:08And whenever you teach the word, it has an impact on lives.
- 21:14It it changes your thought process, it changes your
- 21:16worldview. It changes what your priorities
- 21:19are and what you invest and spend your money on you.
- 21:22If you're doing things that aren't right, the Holy Spirit
- 21:25convicts you and speaks to your heart inwardly and says, you
- 21:29know this isn't cool. You know, you know, you really
- 21:31need to let this go. You need to move away from this,
- 21:34this idol or whatever it might be.
- 21:37An idolatry is fashioned in many ways today.
- 21:40We don't have shrines and temples of, of some ridiculous
- 21:44Pagan deity around our necks. At least I hope we don't.
- 21:48But idolatries in the form of a lot of other things.
- 21:51It can be our material wealth. It can be something we own that
- 21:57we love and that every time we see it, we just smile and say,
- 22:01that's mine, you know? And I'm going to give hours a
- 22:05day to whatever I think is important.
- 22:08That's mine. And so we begin to become
- 22:10consumed and controlled by metal and, and, and leather and tires.
- 22:17And those cars are the biggest idols for all of us.
- 22:20When you first get it, you know, you're excited and there's
- 22:22nothing wrong with having a nice car, but it can really overcome
- 22:25you, can't it? Especially when someone wrecks
- 22:28into it. You just bought it.
- 22:29Like it happened to me. I'm in Philadelphia and someone
- 22:32knocks my mirror on my Sienna and I'm like, you got to be
- 22:35kidding me. You know, it's just like, I just
- 22:37got this thing the Lord said, Clark, it's just a piece of
- 22:40metal and it's a means to an end.
- 22:42It's how you make your livelihood.
- 22:43It's how you stay safe and drive around.
- 22:46But I, I had to, I had to sort of like repent a little bit.
- 22:49John's an auto body guy. He likes it when we wreck.
- 22:54That's good for you, your prosperity.
- 22:56But you know, I had to think like, well, you know, it's just
- 22:59a car, right? But things can control our
- 23:04hearts at times, can't they? How about our houses?
- 23:07Nothing wrong with having nice houses, but when they begin to
- 23:11have problems, how can it begin to make us depressed or upset or
- 23:16uptight? Or, you know, it's, it's
- 23:18interesting. I love sports.
- 23:20Many of you do too. But if my whole life was like,
- 23:23well, you know, I'm not going to go to church today because I'll
- 23:27miss the kickoff. And, and I actually did that
- 23:29when I was younger. The Steelers were kicking off at
- 23:32like 12, man, I was, I was the first one out the door at 11:30.
- 23:37Cindy, come on, we got to go. Where are we going?
- 23:39The game is starting at that. Pastor's going to go on and on
- 23:43and on. Let's get out of here.
- 23:46One pastor, he like tortured us. He'd have an Alder call,
- 23:48especially in a big stealer day. And I knew man, we were going to
- 23:52miss like at least 1/2 an hour to have the game.
- 23:57We're so glad you joined us today on this edition of Living
- 24:00Waters of Grace. Pastor Clark is teaching through
- 24:03the Book of Acts, which is the only book that chronicles the
- 24:06history of the early church immediately after Jesus's
- 24:10ascension. It gives us a front row seat to
- 24:13how the Gospel began to move outwards, starting in Jerusalem
- 24:17and reaching into the heart of the Roman Empire.
- 24:20In just three decades, a small group of frightened ordinary
- 24:24believers became a bold, spirit empowered movement that
- 24:27transformed the known world. Acts is not just a history
- 24:32lesson. It's a reminder of what God can
- 24:34do when His people are surrendered, obedient and filled
- 24:38with the Holy Spirit. Their perseverance still
- 24:41inspires us today. May we follow their example and
- 24:46live faithfully for Christ in our own time.
- 24:49We hope today's message encouraged you.
