- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host Brian self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Hope that you're having a good
- 0:17day today. We're in Isaiah chapter 5.
- 0:21And I got to be honest with you guys, Isaiah 5 is a it's a beat
- 0:26down. It is a verbal mean down of
- 0:29Israel, of that southern Kingdom of Judah and the people of God
- 0:34who were not acting like God, They were not worshipping him
- 0:39wholeheartedly. And So what we're going to read
- 0:42here is strong denunciation from God against his people.
- 0:49And even as I think about my own life, as I think about my church
- 0:54and, you know, my loved ones within this body of believers,
- 0:59I, I don't want what was said about the Kingdom of Judah here.
- 1:04I don't want that to be said about my life.
- 1:06And so even as we approach this passage of Scripture, I want us
- 1:11to consider, God, is this me? Would you show me the ways that
- 1:17I'm currently acting like this group of people when I
- 1:21definitely should not be? So let's read together through
- 1:25this portion of Scripture. I'm going to read through verse
- 1:28#8 talk a little bit about that section and then dive into the
- 1:32rest of the chapter. If all we get through is verse 8
- 1:36for today, I'm totally happy with that.
- 1:38But I I wanted to consider the entire chunk of chapter 5,
- 1:44chapter 5, and verse number one of the book of Isaiah.
- 1:47I will sing about the one I love, a song about my loved
- 1:51one's vineyard. The one I love had a vineyard on
- 1:54a very fertile hill. He broke up the soil, cleared it
- 1:58of stones, and planted it with the finest vines.
- 2:01He built a tower in the middle of it and even dugout A
- 2:04winepress there. He expected it to yield good
- 2:07grapes, but it yielded worthless grapes.
- 2:10So now, residents of Jerusalem and men of Judah, please judge
- 2:15between me and my vineyard. What more could I have done for
- 2:18my vineyard than I did? Why, when I expected a yield of
- 2:22good grapes, did it yield worthless grapes?
- 2:26Now I will tell you what I'm about to do to my vineyard.
- 2:29I will remove its hedge and it'll be consumed.
- 2:32I'll tear down its wall and it will be trampled.
- 2:35I'll make it a wasteland. It will not be pruned or weeded.
- 2:39Thorns and briars will grow up. I will also give orders to the
- 2:42clouds that rain should not fall on it.
- 2:45For the vineyard of Yahweh of Heaven's armies is the House of
- 2:48Israel and the men of Judah. The plant he delighted in.
- 2:52He expected justice, but saw injustice.
- 2:56He expected righteousness but heard cries of despair.
- 3:01Woe to those who add house to house, enjoying field to field
- 3:06until there is no more room and you alone are left in the land.
- 3:13I'm going to stop there for the moment being give kind of AI
- 3:17don't know if it was super clear to you guys as we were walking
- 3:20through what God's saying there. Certainly the end part is the
- 3:23very plain stated you guys, I put you here.
- 3:28I wanted you guys to be just, to be right in your dealings with
- 3:31God and man. And you were not.
- 3:33You were unjust. You took advantage of the poor.
- 3:35You took advantage of the fatherless and the widows.
- 3:39He says. I expected righteousness, but
- 3:41instead I'm hearing cries of despair.
- 3:44You can think of the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah where when
- 3:47God sends the angels, they are there because the cry from the
- 3:52city of those that were being harmed, that cry was going up to
- 3:57the Lord. So I want to look very quickly
- 4:01at verses one and two, and then we'll continue on with the rest
- 4:04of the chapter. So here, this is God's vineyard,
- 4:07and he says the one I love had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.
- 4:11Here he's saying this land of Israel is a beautiful land.
- 4:15Verse #2 he broke up the soil, cleared it of stones.
- 4:19That there was even through the conquest of Canaan, that those
- 4:24groups of people that had been there, that had been idolatrous,
- 4:28that had been murderous, that had been incredibly sexually
- 4:34immoral, just immoral in every possible way, that they were
- 4:39cleared out before the children of Israel.
- 4:42And so he says, I, I took away all that stuff.
- 4:45And he says, and I planted it with the finest vines that God
- 4:49had made things good for Israel. He had been there for them.
- 4:53He had given them some good rulers.
- 4:56And you can look at all throughout the judges and you
- 4:59can look at David, you can look at Solomon.
- 5:01You can see even for some of his reign, King Saul and and many of
- 5:06the kings in the southern Kingdom of Judah that God says,
- 5:10I've been supporting these people, says he built a tower in
- 5:13the middle of it there. The picture is Jerusalem as that
- 5:16capital city there in Israel and then the southern Kingdom of
- 5:20Judah, he says, and even dugout a wine press there.
- 5:24He expected it healed good grapes, but it yielded worthless
- 5:28grapes. Ma'am, my prayer is God, I want
- 5:32what you have done in me, what you have given to me that I
- 5:36would make it, if you will. I'd make it worth your while.
- 5:39Or as we would read in perhaps Colossians one and verse ten
- 5:43among other places in Scripture that we would walk worthy of the
- 5:48calling that God has placed on us that God, you have done so
- 5:52much for me and I want to make it good for you.
- 5:57You can think to the parable of the talents again, the talents
- 6:03when scripture is talking about that is not saying like, Oh
- 6:05yeah, I'm really good at guitar or I'm really good at cooking
- 6:08and that's my talent. No, a talent is a measure of
- 6:14monetary wealth. There in the 1st century Roman
- 6:18Empire that you have this person that was given 5 talents that
- 6:24they doubled. And so they, you know, invested,
- 6:28they bought stuff, they used it well.
- 6:31And so then where they were given 5, now they had 10.
- 6:35Or the guy that had two talents ended up with five.
- 6:38I'm pretty sure I have those numbers wrong, but it's
- 6:40immaterial. That's what we're talking about
- 6:42right now. So I want to be faithful with
- 6:47what God has given. I'm a steward, I'm a manager.
- 6:50And if God has given me my family, man, I better treat
- 6:54Samantha well because that's who God gave me.
- 6:57I better be a good dad to be an Eva.
- 7:00I should point them in the right way.
- 7:02I should treat them with kindness, with respect.
- 7:05I should raise them up in the nurture and admonition of the
- 7:08Lord as I'm commanded. God has given me my church
- 7:10family and I better make full use of the the wonderful
- 7:16brothers and sisters that the Lord has given me and not not
- 7:21waste any of it. I don't want to be one that is
- 7:24worthless. Grapes.
- 7:25We got expected good grapes from my life.
- 7:28I am thankful that even when I am the worthless grapes, that
- 7:32God still loves me and cares about me.
- 7:35That on my best day I'm still as much a child of God as on my
- 7:38worst day. But I want to follow God.
- 7:41I want to have that good fruit coming out of my life.
- 7:46So let's look now. Verse #8 I'm going to go kind of
- 7:51just little section by little section through here.
- 7:55And then when I run out of time, I run out of time.
- 7:57But I'm going to begin at verse #8 and because you guys can't
- 8:03see what I'm looking at here, I'm going to show people there's
- 8:07these sections of poetry that are here on the page.
- 8:12And so verse #8 is kind of by itself.
- 8:15But then 9 and 10 is together 11 and 12 is together 13 through
- 8:1917. So I'm going to take each of
- 8:21those sections of poetry by themselves as they go through
- 8:26verse #8 Woe to those who had a house to house and join field to
- 8:29field until there is no more room and you alone are left in
- 8:33the land. God viewed a monopoly, a ever an
- 8:41ever growing, ever increasing empire within Judah as a bad
- 8:47thing. Many of us even today as we can
- 8:50look at the housing market in the US, we can actually kind of
- 8:53see some of this type of thing taking place where you just have
- 8:56large companies that are buying, you know, apartment complex
- 9:01after apartment complex after, you know, new houses and all
- 9:06this stuff. And they're purchasing all of
- 9:08these things and it's making the company's very, very rich.
- 9:14But God says this is not a good thing.
- 9:17What God had set up was that each family was supposed to have
- 9:21its own portion of land that they would tend for if they fell
- 9:26on hard times and they could not sustain it.
- 9:30There were recourses that were available to them, but their
- 9:33families were supposed to have every 50 years during that year
- 9:37of Jubilee. Every family was supposed to
- 9:40have their land returned to them.
- 9:41And instead what was happening was you had rich people that
- 9:46kept on amassing more and more and more wealth for themselves.
- 9:50God says this is not good versus 9 and 10.
- 9:53I heard Yahweh of Heaven's armies say, indeed, many houses
- 9:57will become desolate, grand and lovely ones without inhabitants.
- 10:01For a 10 acre vineyard will yield only 6 gallons of wine and
- 10:0610 bushels of seed will yield only one bushel of grain.
- 10:12Hear God saying, all right, you are so insistent on amassing
- 10:17your own wealth, I'm going to make it so that everything you
- 10:19have produces way less than it's supposed to.
- 10:24God is the one that brings the the reins.
- 10:26He's the one that is in control even of the weeds and of the
- 10:32soil. And so if God is against you in
- 10:35your business practices, it doesn't matter who is for you.
- 10:40And so personally, me, I want to pray for the Lord's blessing on
- 10:45the work of my hands. Like I want to pray, Hey, God,
- 10:47would you bless us as a church that in the way that you deem
- 10:54best and most appropriate? Would you grow us such that we
- 10:59can handle at a given time to be able to disciple and to love?
- 11:03Well, as you have called us to, even as I think about Tabernacle
- 11:07talk like God, would you help this to be a blessing to people?
- 11:11Would you bless the work that I am putting in?
- 11:15I'll throw this into me just as I'm thinking about it right now.
- 11:18If this podcast is a blessing to you, I, I want to encourage you
- 11:21share it with someone else. Leave a review on Apple podcast
- 11:26or on Spotify podcast. I saw the other day, we have a
- 11:29couple of people that have left a review on Apple Podcasts.
- 11:32Really, really grateful for that.
- 11:34If if no one else else was watching this thing, at the very
- 11:38least I am in God's Word and I'm having to think through this
- 11:42stuff. So I do it.
- 11:44If it was just for me, I'm not doing it for any other person.
- 11:48But if it is a blessing to you, I hope that you would pass that
- 11:50on to others. But ultimately, this is all in
- 11:53the hand of God. And so if God's against it, it
- 11:55doesn't matter how much work that I put in, He will make my
- 11:5810 acre vineyard only yield 6 gallons of wine.
- 12:02Verse #11 Woe to those who rise early in the morning in pursuit
- 12:07of beer, who linger into the evening inflamed by wine.
- 12:12At their feast they have lyre, harp, tambourine, flute, and
- 12:16wine. They do not perceive Yahweh's
- 12:19actions and they do not see the work of His hands.
- 12:23Here are these people that are incredibly rich.
- 12:26They own all of these various things.
- 12:29They're throwing lavish parties that all day every day.
- 12:33They are drunkards. They are consistently pursuing
- 12:37beer and wine. And you, you can't then be like,
- 12:42well, listen, I'm, I'm more of a vodka person and so this isn't
- 12:46talking about me. No, there is, especially as we
- 12:50think about our walk with the Lord, as we think about doing
- 12:53what God has called us to do. There are people that because of
- 12:57their constant pursuit of physical pleasure and ease, that
- 13:02they are not able to do what God has called them to do because
- 13:06they are spending so much time on their own pleasure, in
- 13:09drunkenness and in partying. I want to encourage you, don't
- 13:12be one of those people there at the end of verse #12 they do not
- 13:15perceive Yahweh's actions and they do not see the work of His
- 13:19hands. I want to be someone that
- 13:20notices what God is doing and that I pursue that in my life.
- 13:26Verse #13 Therefore, my people will go into exile because they
- 13:31lack knowledge. Her dignitaries are starving and
- 13:35her masses are parched with thirst here.
- 13:38This knowledge that's being talked about is not OK.
- 13:42Well, they didn't spend enough time in school or they need to
- 13:45go to college. This knowledge is a knowledge of
- 13:48God, a knowledge of God's actions.
- 13:51And so may we understand that we need to know God, we need to
- 13:56know the Word of God, we need to know the way to behave and to
- 14:00think and to act, the attitudes that we are to have.
- 14:04We should not be a people, a church, a nation where our
- 14:10dignitaries are starving for the knowledge of God, or where the
- 14:14masses of people are parched with thirst because they have
- 14:17not encountered the true and living waters of the Word of
- 14:23God. And verse #14 even says, here's
- 14:27what happens. As this nation does not know
- 14:30God, does not behave like God would want them to.
- 14:34Verse 14 Therefore, the grave. This is the Hebrew word sheol.
- 14:39The grave enlarges its throat and opens wide its enormous
- 14:45jaws, and down go Zions, dignitaries, her masses, her
- 14:49crowds, and those who celebrate in her.
- 14:53So over and over and over again in the prophets you will read of
- 15:01other nations destroying other nations and hear Israel being
- 15:08talked about like a giant serpent or sea serpent.
- 15:15You can think about Leviathan from the book of Job.
- 15:20You can think of the great dragon in Revelation 12.
- 15:26It's the picture that's used in the ancient world.
- 15:31A lot of the nations had fear of the like waters or the open
- 15:37ocean, thinking that the ocean or the waters wanted to destroy
- 15:42everything that was on the land. And sometimes the, if you will,
- 15:45the embodiment of those fears was like a giant sea serpent,
- 15:52sea monster, sea dragon. And what the biblical authors,
- 15:56especially in the prophets do is say, no, the thing that wants to
- 16:01destroy humanity, the thing that is the enemy of life are empires
- 16:07that through armies and death, through excessive like taxes,
- 16:14through horrible treatment of people, enslavement.
- 16:19They say the nations are the actual sea serpents, that they
- 16:25are those chaos Dragons that are destroying life.
- 16:29And Scripture also makes it really clear that the nations
- 16:34are currently under the control and influence of Satan.
- 16:40Now, not in a way that, like Satan, you know, stands on some,
- 16:43you know, president or prime minister's ear and whispers
- 16:46like, oh, you should do this. And the person, you know, has a
- 16:50Ouija board or something. And they're figuring, OK, what
- 16:52do I do with my day? I want you to bomb this place or
- 16:55I want you to hurt this place. It's just what nations do.
- 16:59And it's what they always have done.
- 17:01But it falls right in line with what Satan wants.
- 17:04Satan wants death and destruction, enslavement,
- 17:09families being torn apart, like all of those things are things
- 17:13that Satan and his demons they love.
- 17:15It's great and it's what empires and nations have always wanted.
- 17:21And so here this is being talked about, of Jerusalem and Judah
- 17:25are swallowed up by the grave here by Babylon, or the northern
- 17:30Kingdom of Israel would be swallowed by Assyria.
- 17:34Verse #15 Humanity is brought low, each person is humbled, and
- 17:39haughty eyes are humbled. But Yahweh of heaven's armies is
- 17:44exalted by His justice, and the holy God demonstrates His
- 17:49Holiness through His righteousness.
- 17:53Lambs will graze as if in their own pastures, and resident
- 17:57aliens will eat among the ruins of the rich.
- 18:01That God says to proud Israel and Judah that did not know him,
- 18:06that did not seek him, even though he had put his name
- 18:09there, He had put his temple there, He'd put the Levites and
- 18:11the priests there, even though he had put prophets there, that
- 18:14the people refused to hear the word of God.
- 18:18And so as a result, he says, all right, you're with the nations
- 18:22now. And now this land that was so
- 18:25overcome by the rich and the powerful and the evil, he says
- 18:30lambs are just going to graze anywhere they want, like
- 18:33everywhere is their pasture now. And he says the resident aliens,
- 18:37those that were not from the land of Israel, they would be
- 18:41able to eat because they're in, you know, these houses that were
- 18:44formerly filled with rich people and their parties and the
- 18:49drunkenness. But now no one is there as they
- 18:52were taken away to Babylon. So I want to encourage you.
- 18:56What kind of heart and what kind of life are you looking to live?
- 19:00Are you wanting to be the humble person?
- 19:03Are you wanting to be the one that is, if you will, the good
- 19:07grapes that God wanted to build in his vineyard?
- 19:11Are you exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit?
- 19:13Or do you have a desire to know the word of God and to live out
- 19:18the character of God within your own life?
- 19:21Or have you been living like here, the southern Kingdom of
- 19:25Judah and Jerusalem? Are you living for what you can
- 19:29amass and make in wealth in this world?
- 19:32Are you one that delights in death and war and destruction
- 19:38like the nations all around Jerusalem?
- 19:41Are you one that loves what God loves?
- 19:47Or do you love what God hates? Because here the picture that we
- 19:52get from these verses is mad. There is coming a day of
- 19:55judgement for those that have turned their back on God.
- 19:59And what we can do is we can either follow the Lord and ask
- 20:04for His sustaining His blessing on our lives, or we can
- 20:09experience what it is to go along with the world and lose
- 20:13everything that the world will one day lose.
- 20:17I hope that would be a challenge to you today.
- 20:19If you have any questions, as always, please let me know and
- 20:22would love to hear from you. Next episode will conclude
- 20:27chapter 5 and then the episode after that is Isaiah 6 and I'm
- 20:30so excited to go over that with you.
- 20:33Thanks for tuning in. Hope you have a wonderful day.
