- 0:17Speaker 2: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I was like, please test me for literally everything. And
- 0:26Speaker 3: they were like, okay, calm down.
- 0:28Speaker 4: My worst nightmare is, I don't care about you guys,
- 0:30Speaker 4: but if I got one of the players sick.
- 0:33Speaker 5: MJ says, welcome back, Evan. Glad you're feeling better. These
- 0:35Speaker 5: other guys are not ball knowers. Paul would not like
- 0:38Speaker 5: that email.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Some of us pay attention to more than just Redstone.
- 0:43Speaker 3: I've officiated a wedding before.
- 0:44Speaker 5: Me too. Analytics Evan gets up there and before he
- 0:47Speaker 5: does the vows and all that, he's like, 52%.
- 0:49Speaker 6: Weddings, you know.
- 0:51Speaker 5: Marriages and the divorce, but that rate, the DVOA for
- 0:55Speaker 5: that changes when it's, you know. The other thing about
- 0:57Speaker 5: Paul is, like, if fans start getting excited about a
- 1:00Speaker 5: new guy, he doesn't like that. He wants to bring
- 1:04Speaker 5: you down. I don't know if he's afraid to be
- 1:06Speaker 5: let down or if he just doesn't want fans to
- 1:08Speaker 5: be happy.
- 1:09Speaker 7: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Presented by Toyota.com.
- 1:13Speaker 5: Patriots Unfiltered. All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is
- 1:19Speaker 5: Tuesday here at Gillette Stadium. Another Patriots victory. 4-2, beating
- 1:25Speaker 5: the Jets, division rival. We move on to Chicago Thursday night.
- 1:30Speaker 5: It's a short week, but yeah, we're going to talk
- 1:32Speaker 5: about that game. And it's Evan, it's Paul, it's me,
- 1:35Speaker 5: it's Deuce, it's Matt in the booth. My opening thought
- 1:39Speaker 5: on this game is it was a good win. All
- 1:44Speaker 5: these people are saying, oh, you know, it's the Jets. Blah, blah, blah.
- 1:47Speaker 5: You know, it wasn't that good a win. They played sloppy. Yeah,
- 1:50Speaker 5: they didn't play as clean a game as you would hope.
- 1:54Speaker 5: But I think that people are not giving the Jets
- 1:57Speaker 5: defense credit. The Jets have a good defense. Yeah, they do.
- 2:02Speaker 1: They don't.
- 2:02Speaker 5: They did coming in.
- 2:04Speaker 8: They have an above average defense. Not against anybody that can.
- 2:06Speaker 5: Move the ball. An above average defense. And so I.
- 2:09Speaker 8: Get against Cleveland in a monsoon.
- 2:11Speaker 7: They have an abroad.
- 2:12Speaker 8: So I think that I'm not against Detroit. I'm not
- 2:14Speaker 8: against Chicago.
- 2:15Speaker 5: I think the Patriots did a good job. You know,
- 2:17Speaker 5: these division games can often be, you know, wonky. Just,
- 2:21Speaker 5: you know, so I think that the Patriots did what
- 2:28Speaker 5: they had to do to win. They got out of
- 2:29Speaker 5: there with a win. So celebrate. I think it's a
- 2:33Speaker 5: good win.
- 2:34Speaker 7: Okay. Can we do something else now? I agree a
- 2:37Speaker 7: thousand percent with you. As I said in the postgame show,
- 2:40Speaker 7: I thought Mike Grable was incredibly hot. I understand what
- 2:43Speaker 7: he's doing. The turnovers need to stop. He called it
- 2:47Speaker 7: embarrassing yesterday. We're turning the ball over.
- 2:49Speaker 8: He called it an embarrassment. And I understand where he's
- 2:52Speaker 8: coming from. I'm with Fred.
- 2:53Speaker 7: I think they played a better game on Sunday than
- 2:56Speaker 7: he is giving them credit for. I think they had
- 2:59Speaker 7: a couple of really bad plays that allowed the Jets
- 3:02Speaker 7: to hang around. But I don't think there was a
- 3:06Speaker 7: huge difference in the talent level on the field the
- 3:08Speaker 7: other day. I thought the huge difference was the coach
- 3:12Speaker 7: and the quarterback. I think Drake made some plays when
- 3:15Speaker 7: he had to make them, and the Jets couldn't make
- 3:17Speaker 7: them when they needed to on fourth downs. That was
- 3:20Speaker 7: the difference in the game. I don't think they played that.
- 3:22Speaker 7: I'm with Fred. I think this was a good debate.
- 3:25Speaker 7: Was it the best I've seen the Patriots play this season?
- 3:27Speaker 1: Nope.
- 3:28Speaker 9: Nope.
- 3:28Speaker 7: They played much better the week before against the Raiders
- 3:30Speaker 7: than they did in this game. But I think the
- 3:32Speaker 7: Jets are a better team than the Raiders. I don't
- 3:35Speaker 7: think this was a horrible performance, which, to Fred's point,
- 3:38Speaker 7: some people are saying.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I think it's also being lost a little bit in
- 3:42Speaker 3: the injuries and in the A.J. Brown targets drops, all
- 3:45Speaker 3: that stuff. You know, those side stories I think have
- 3:48Speaker 3: taken a little bit of the spotlight away, but generally
- 3:50Speaker 3: I agree. It's a division game. Just get a win.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Just find a way to get a win. Unfortunately, you've
- 3:55Speaker 3: got some injuries, though, you've got to deal with. I
- 3:57Speaker 3: think that's the big thing coming out to me.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Well, that stinks, but injuries were part of this game,
- 4:02Speaker 5: and I think The Patriots offensive line, instead of, you know,
- 4:05Speaker 5: having trouble at the end of the game, actually rose
- 4:08Speaker 5: to the occasion and finished that game out.
- 4:10Speaker 7: It was an impressive closeout.
- 4:12Speaker 3: It was not not the kind of thing that you'd
- 4:14Speaker 3: expect from this, you know, Patriots team, be able to
- 4:16Speaker 3: power it on the ground, close the game out. I mean,
- 4:18Speaker 3: I think they showed you a little something. I was
- 4:20Speaker 3: really encouraged. We heard from Corey Connery yesterday. Good kid.
- 4:23Speaker 3: I mean, seems very excited talking about talking to his parents,
- 4:25Speaker 3: how excited his parents were for him and all that.
- 4:28Speaker 3: but maybe they found a little something with him as
- 4:30Speaker 3: a third running back to help him in Samaria.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Now, having said that, if the Patriots don't take advantage
- 4:36Speaker 5: of those opportunities on Thursday night, if A.J. Brown or
- 4:40Speaker 5: any other wide receiver drops four or five balls, they're
- 4:45Speaker 5: going to lose to the Bears. So they have to
- 4:47Speaker 5: play better to beat the Bears.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that both things can be true. I'm
- 4:53Speaker 4: not overly concerned that they didn't blow the Jets out,
- 4:55Speaker 4: But they didn't play well in the game.
- 4:58Speaker 8: Like, you can say both those things, and, you know, they.
- 5:03Speaker 4: This game, I thought that they let their guard down
- 5:06Speaker 4: on some of the little details. And I think that's
- 5:08Speaker 4: the stuff that usually irritates the head coach. It's not
- 5:11Speaker 4: the it's not the big, like high level stuff that
- 5:14Speaker 4: we all see. It's like assignments and, you know, techniques
- 5:19Speaker 4: and execution and little minutiae of the game that I
- 5:22Speaker 4: think that those are the things that he thinks about
- 5:25Speaker 4: that they have to button up.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Letting Cooper open on that play probably really.
- 5:29Speaker 8: Pissed him off.
- 5:30Speaker 4: A busted coverage on the big touchdown. Little minor things
- 5:35Speaker 4: in terms of the targets to A.J. Brown that we
- 5:37Speaker 4: can talk about. These are the things that, against good teams,
- 5:41Speaker 4: are going to get you beat. Against the Jets, they're
- 5:44Speaker 4: just not good enough to make you pay for it.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Speaking of little things, you went viral yesterday with pointing
- 5:51Speaker 5: out Ramondre Stevenson's rep. Good job there.
- 5:55Speaker 4: That was one of the best pass blocking reps a
- 5:58Speaker 4: running back has had all season that I have seen.
- 6:00Speaker 4: I mean, that was it's an unbelievable job by him.
- 6:06Speaker 4: He's up in the B gap. So he's taking the linebacker. Normally,
- 6:10Speaker 4: the linebacker just comes right through the B gap and
- 6:12Speaker 4: he's just going to block him. back on backer, but
- 6:14Speaker 4: they run a stunt over the left-hand side. And he
- 6:17Speaker 4: looked like a guard. Like, he literally looked like a
- 6:19Speaker 4: guard passing the stunt off with Will Campbell. And unfortunately,
- 6:24Speaker 4: Demario Douglas fumbles at the end of the play because
- 6:28Speaker 4: he keeps him clean for a 40-yard play.
- 6:31Speaker 8: That should have been, like, one of the highlights of
- 6:33Speaker 8: the game.
- 6:33Speaker 4: And, of course, you know, those are the things that
- 6:35Speaker 4: I'm sure irritated Vrabel as well.
- 6:37Speaker 3: But, yeah, hell of a block by Ramondre.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Yeah, so go to Evan's X account. You can find
- 6:43Speaker 5: that there. Um, also somebody else pointed out a, just
- 6:47Speaker 5: a really highlight reel block by Campbell, uh, as a
- 6:51Speaker 5: guy tried to go outside him and Campbell just, man,
- 6:55Speaker 5: he gave that punch and just knocked the guy to
- 6:57Speaker 5: the ground. Loved it.
- 6:59Speaker 8: Influence, influence block.
- 7:01Speaker 5: What does that mean?
- 7:02Speaker 4: So he's trying, he wants him to go up the field.
- 7:05Speaker 4: So he's like, it's almost like a draw, right?
- 7:07Speaker 5: Or a screen.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Like he wants him to go up the field. So
- 7:11Speaker 4: he kind of baits him to go up the field.
- 7:13Speaker 4: And then when he does, he just chucks him and
- 7:15Speaker 4: like uses his momentum against him to toss him to
- 7:18Speaker 4: the ground. So that's a technique. It's a type of block.
- 7:21Speaker 5: Well, he certainly executed that technique flawlessly. It was very impressive.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Good job, Will Campbell.
- 7:28Speaker 8: Both young tackles.
- 7:29Speaker 5: Put a little sticker on your helmet.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yeah, nice job by Caleb Willman, too. I mean, he
- 7:33Speaker 3: had a couple nice blocks, too.
- 7:35Speaker 7: No, no. Cheese that.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Cheese it.
- 7:37Speaker 7: Cheese it.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:39Speaker 8: He's just fine.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Don't worry about it.
- 7:42Speaker 7: More than fine.
- 7:42Speaker 8: He's been good the last two weeks.
- 7:44Speaker 7: I think he's been excellent.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he looks great. I think he looks
- 7:47Speaker 4: way further ahead than I expected him to look. I
- 7:50Speaker 4: think in pass protection, he looks sturdy.
- 7:52Speaker 7: He looks good.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Comfortable on both sides right now uh i didn't think
- 7:56Speaker 4: he looked any different on playing right tackle that he
- 7:58Speaker 4: did left the week before this is why they drafted
- 8:01Speaker 4: him they drafted him knowing there would be injuries and
- 8:03Speaker 4: they needed depth at that position and long-term future and
- 8:06Speaker 4: and so far check check check.
- 8:07Speaker 5: What were drake's numbers to finish the game.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Like his his regular stats 18 for 32 230 three touchdowns.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Something like that it's right in his sweet spot it
- 8:16Speaker 5: would have been a lot better if He had some cooperation.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Some of the A.J. Brown catches, sure. No, Drake was
- 8:25Speaker 3: good again. I mean, I think it's continuing what like
- 8:27Speaker 3: the second half of Buffalo felt like he maybe turned
- 8:29Speaker 3: the corner, but continuing to look comfortable in the pocket.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And I think that's, you know, really encouraging. But the
- 8:34Speaker 3: thing I was going to ask the group was Morgan
- 8:36Speaker 3: Moses was listed. I know it's a walkthrough yesterday, but
- 8:39Speaker 3: Morgan Moses was listed only as limited, whereas, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 3: Vera Tucker and Brown were you know, DNPs should they
- 8:44Speaker 3: have practiced. Would you consider on the short week, even
- 8:46Speaker 3: if Moses was able to suck it up and go
- 8:48Speaker 3: and be the warrior that he's been, would you say,
- 8:50Speaker 3: you know what, let's give Lomu a chance. It's an
- 8:52Speaker 3: NFC team on a short week. Give Moses an extra
- 8:55Speaker 3: week to maybe try to get a little bit healthy
- 8:58Speaker 3: and just get some experience for Lomu with his first start.
- 9:01Speaker 8: Yes, but I think it's a, go ahead, Jeff.
- 9:03Speaker 3: No, sorry.
- 9:04Speaker 7: I think we're going to say the same thing, so
- 9:05Speaker 7: I'll let you say it. He might need to play guard.
- 9:08Speaker 7: It depends on what you have available at guard.
- 9:10Speaker 8: Yeah, like, you know, right now, Lomu. Lomu might have
- 9:13Speaker 8: to play guard. Yeah, obviously not Moses. Yeah, Lomu.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Like, they're so short at guard right now that just
- 9:20Speaker 4: to get the best, most talented five players on the field, like,
- 9:24Speaker 4: Lomu might need to play left guard.
- 9:25Speaker 8: Yeah, and then put Moses, keep Moses at right tackle, Sam. Yeah,
- 9:28Speaker 8: or even activate Marcus Bryant to play right tackle.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:31Speaker 4: So, like, your options are either starting Pryor and Walter Rouse.
- 9:36Speaker 4: as your two starting guards or probably prior at right.
- 9:40Speaker 8: And Lomu at left. And then Moses cuts through it
- 9:44Speaker 8: at right.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:44Speaker 4: So like, it's not a good spot to be in,
- 9:47Speaker 4: but like, you know, Alex and Barth, he's been big
- 9:50Speaker 4: on me about like, just keep Lomu a tackle and
- 9:53Speaker 4: don't mess with his development. But right now they, they're
- 9:57Speaker 4: they need bodies like they're just short players yeah so
- 10:00Speaker 4: like at some point like it's football like you gotta
- 10:02Speaker 4: just go out there and play where you need to play.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Um does chicago pose a challenge in that respect like
- 10:10Speaker 5: how's their front like are they as the patriots offensive
- 10:13Speaker 5: line going to be stressed in this game If.
- 10:15Speaker 4: They get into obvious drop back, then Dennis Allen, their
- 10:18Speaker 4: defensive coordinator, is a really good blitzer. He's got a
- 10:20Speaker 4: good blitz package. Kyler Gordon, their defensive back, had three
- 10:24Speaker 4: sacks last week. Two of them were strip sacks on blitzes.
- 10:27Speaker 4: So they have a really good third down blitz package.
- 10:31Speaker 4: They don't stop the run well. And their standard rushes are,
- 10:35Speaker 4: you can block them. You know, and Montez Sweat's not
- 10:37Speaker 4: going to play in this game. So I think that
- 10:40Speaker 4: if you can stay on schedule and you can stay
- 10:42Speaker 4: out of those obvious passing situations, they should be all right.
- 10:46Speaker 4: But that's the key to the game right there.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Sweat is still serving his suspension.
- 10:51Speaker 8: Second game of his suspension, yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 7: Okay. All right.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Caleb Williams back.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Looked good.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Great.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:57Speaker 5: So he's back in the game, which, look, I'm all
- 11:00Speaker 5: for it. Let's beat them at their best. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Well, he's leaving the league in completion percentage. That was,
- 11:06Speaker 3: you know, the Drake May stat last year. So, you know,
- 11:08Speaker 3: we're talking to Paul a little bit about it this
- 11:10Speaker 3: morning with, you know, his efficiency is up. But is
- 11:13Speaker 3: he still pushing the ball down the field? I think
- 11:15Speaker 3: Luther Burden's coming on. He seems like he's starting to
- 11:17Speaker 3: put it all together. He's been really consistent this year.
- 11:21Speaker 3: You know, and I also think that the Jets had some,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and Ev, you wrote about this, and I saw it too,
- 11:25Speaker 3: just they had some good plans for what the Patriots do,
- 11:27Speaker 3: you know, trying to exploit the Patriots aggressiveness a little bit.
- 11:31Speaker 3: The Patriots like to, you know, show that zero blitz. Look,
- 11:33Speaker 3: there's a lot of space. So you get that ball
- 11:35Speaker 3: quick out to wide receiver screen. You're forcing the Patriots
- 11:38Speaker 3: defensive backs to come up and, you know, make tackles
- 11:40Speaker 3: and stuff. I thought, you know, they caught him a
- 11:42Speaker 3: few times. I thought that was something the Jets did
- 11:43Speaker 3: well that I wonder if other teams will continue to
- 11:46Speaker 3: kind of build off of that approach to the Patriots
- 11:49Speaker 3: defense with, with their aggressiveness. And, you know, sometimes it
- 11:52Speaker 3: works for the Patriots. I mean, I think the, you know, the,
- 11:54Speaker 3: the third down against the bills where they're showing that look,
- 11:57Speaker 3: but then they drop out of it and, you know, they, they,
- 11:59Speaker 3: they get a good play defensively. So, uh, cool chess match.
- 12:02Speaker 3: And I think teams are starting to get a beat
- 12:04Speaker 3: on Patriots aggressiveness.
- 12:05Speaker 5: Carlton Davis probably won't play.
- 12:07Speaker 8: It doesn't sound like it.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 12:09Speaker 5: It's weird.
- 12:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 4: I thought that, uh, there's a lot of like big
- 12:13Speaker 4: picture questions with the jets and their coaching staff. Like
- 12:16Speaker 4: if Aaron Glenn is the right guy and they don't
- 12:19Speaker 4: have a quarterback and all that kind of stuff. But
- 12:21Speaker 4: I thought schematically they, they both coordinators. So Glenn is
- 12:24Speaker 4: calling the defense, but, they called a good game. I
- 12:27Speaker 4: thought the first half they backed off. They played more coverage.
- 12:30Speaker 4: They dropped eight a couple of times. They tried to
- 12:33Speaker 4: make Drake made, you know, matriculated down the field and
- 12:36Speaker 4: beat him from the pocket. And second half, they mixed
- 12:39Speaker 4: in some more blitzes like they normally do.
- 12:41Speaker 8: And I thought it was a good plan.
- 12:42Speaker 4: And they just don't right now have the personnel to
- 12:45Speaker 4: sustain offense. You know, like they're not going to be
- 12:48Speaker 4: able to really make plays for four quarters.
- 12:51Speaker 5: I think the Patriots finally made Geno Smith look like
- 12:54Speaker 5: the quarterback that he is. They put him under some pressure.
- 12:58Speaker 5: He doesn't really have answers. He's not the kind of
- 13:01Speaker 5: guy that's going to beat you with his legs and
- 13:04Speaker 5: extend plays. So I think the Patriots did a good
- 13:07Speaker 5: job there.
- 13:07Speaker 7: I thought offensively the Jets did pretty well. I think
- 13:12Speaker 7: defensively I agree with what Evan's saying about the schemes.
- 13:17Speaker 7: Their problem was, like Evan said, you just don't have
- 13:20Speaker 7: the horses to execute it. they had like really enormous
- 13:25Speaker 7: coverage busts in this game where, you know, two guys
- 13:28Speaker 7: are covering a guy in the flat and like, there's
- 13:31Speaker 7: no safety help over the top on the deep over
- 13:33Speaker 7: for Romeo Dobbs, you know, for the touchdown. I mean,
- 13:35Speaker 7: you know, it's, that's like, it was kind of a
- 13:39Speaker 7: strange play. Like if you go back and watch it
- 13:42Speaker 7: a little bit, like he could have thrown the ball
- 13:45Speaker 7: to AJ Brown over the middle of the field probably
- 13:48Speaker 7: should have.
- 13:49Speaker 8: Um, And then he just he kind of pumps and waits.
- 13:52Speaker 7: Oh, wait a minute. I can pass up that 20
- 13:55Speaker 7: for the for the 45 touchdown because there's kind of
- 13:58Speaker 7: nobody covering him either.
- 13:59Speaker 8: We saw Hunter Henry.
- 14:01Speaker 7: That's the one that caused we were joking on the
- 14:04Speaker 7: post on the postgame show. Troy Brown called it that
- 14:07Speaker 7: that's jetting where they just kind of lose the tight
- 14:10Speaker 7: end in the red zone and give as easy a
- 14:12Speaker 7: touchdown as you can get.
- 14:14Speaker 8: He was open the whole game. I didn't know which
- 14:16Speaker 8: one you were talking about. Well, he had four catches,
- 14:18Speaker 8: and they just kind of didn't cover him.
- 14:20Speaker 7: And they just had these coverage busts. I don't necessarily
- 14:25Speaker 7: think it was because of scheme. I kind of agree
- 14:27Speaker 7: with Evan. I thought they did some things that, I mean,
- 14:31Speaker 7: I think they went out of their comfort zone. They
- 14:32Speaker 7: normally blitz about half of the time.
- 14:34Speaker 8: They barely blitzed in this game.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Why do you think they didn't do that?
- 14:37Speaker 8: They didn't blitz?
- 14:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:38Speaker 3: You don't blitz Drake May.
- 14:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Unless you want to lose.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I would.
- 14:42Speaker 7: I think the only way to beat him is to
- 14:43Speaker 7: hit him. And if you don't hit him, he's going
- 14:45Speaker 7: to do that to you.
- 14:46Speaker 5: So let's look at the quarterbacks that they've played so
- 14:47Speaker 5: far in which they have established that blitz mentality. None
- 14:51Speaker 5: of these guys can beat the blitz?
- 14:53Speaker 4: I mean, Deshaun Watson is just a sitting duck back there.
- 14:58Speaker 4: That's how they got the eight sacks the week before.
- 15:02Speaker 4: If you blitz Drake May... I'd say the main reason
- 15:05Speaker 4: why he burns you on blitzes is because he's getting
- 15:08Speaker 4: one-on-ones on the outside if you're blitzing. Because the numbers
- 15:11Speaker 4: got to come from somewhere. So if you're going to
- 15:13Speaker 4: bring people, then he's going to be one-on-one on the outside.
- 15:16Speaker 4: And when you give him one-on-one shot plays on the outside,
- 15:19Speaker 4: we know what's happening.
- 15:20Speaker 8: It's over your head.
- 15:21Speaker 7: So, Fred, and I know that you took offense when
- 15:24Speaker 7: I said I don't think the Jets have a good defense.
- 15:26Speaker 7: And you're like, well, who are they? He just hit
- 15:28Speaker 7: on one of them. So one of them is Deshaun
- 15:30Speaker 7: Watson in terrible weather. That they were able to get
- 15:32Speaker 7: all kinds of pressure on. Another one was Cam Ward
- 15:35Speaker 7: in the first game of the year.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Tyson Bajan.
- 15:36Speaker 7: They were able to get all kinds of pressure on
- 15:38Speaker 7: him and completely render the Titans irrelevant offensively. And the
- 15:44Speaker 7: other one was Green Bay right when they lost all
- 15:47Speaker 7: their linemen and were without Josh Jacobs initially. They couldn't
- 15:50Speaker 7: run the ball. They couldn't protect Jordan Love. And again,
- 15:53Speaker 7: it was terrible weather in the Meadowlands. The other two
- 15:57Speaker 7: games that they played were against good offenses, and they
- 15:59Speaker 7: got shredded. And to Evan's point, Chicago did it with
- 16:04Speaker 7: Case Keenum and Tyson Bajan. So if you have personnel
- 16:08Speaker 7: like the Patriots do, you're going to give up yards
- 16:11Speaker 7: and points.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Okay.
- 16:13Speaker 7: Because I don't think that defense is all that good. Now,
- 16:15Speaker 7: I do think it was well-schemed. I agree with everything
- 16:18Speaker 7: Evan said. They played the game the way they needed to.
- 16:20Speaker 7: They kept it competitive.
- 16:22Speaker 4: On both sides of the ball. They had a run
- 16:25Speaker 4: game in the first half. They denominated time of possession.
- 16:28Speaker 4: The defense had some good wrinkles and didn't come after
- 16:31Speaker 4: Drake May.
- 16:32Speaker 8: They're not good.
- 16:33Speaker 7: The Jets lost the game in the last two minutes
- 16:36Speaker 7: of the first half by just not being good enough
- 16:40Speaker 7: to execute in a situation that you have to execute.
- 16:43Speaker 7: You give up a field goal, so you get off
- 16:45Speaker 7: the field. They only give up three, and I think
- 16:48Speaker 7: he did the right thing. Troy and I disagreed with
- 16:51Speaker 7: this in the postgame. I think you should call timeouts
- 16:54Speaker 7: when the other team's deep in the red zone. late
- 16:56Speaker 7: in the half, give yourself a chance to get those
- 16:58Speaker 7: points back. And then you go three and out because
- 17:01Speaker 7: you just can't execute. And, you know, one of them
- 17:04Speaker 7: was an easy throw to Kenyon Sadiq that he drops
- 17:06Speaker 7: in the flat. So instead of third and two, it's
- 17:09Speaker 7: third and ten. Jets aren't going to convert a lot
- 17:11Speaker 7: of third and tens. So all of a sudden, you've
- 17:14Speaker 7: taken about 25 or 30 seconds off the clock and
- 17:16Speaker 7: the Patriots get the ball back. Great field position. They
- 17:19Speaker 7: go right down the field because they're good. And the
- 17:21Speaker 7: Jets aren't at that stage yet. But I didn't think
- 17:24Speaker 7: the talent level was all that different on the field Sunday.
- 17:27Speaker 7: I really didn't. The Patriots had the star power with
- 17:30Speaker 7: Drake May, and he made a couple of plays.
- 17:33Speaker 8: Like, is Demario Douglas any better than, you know, Omar Cooper?
- 17:38Speaker 8: I thought Omar Cooper looked really good. Yeah, that's my point.
- 17:43Speaker 7: Like, you know, the guy... You know, Garrett Wilson's probably
- 17:45Speaker 7: the best receiver on the field Sunday, counting A.J.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Brown. Right.
- 17:50Speaker 7: So, like, they just... It wasn't that much of a, like,
- 17:54Speaker 7: I think that people were looking at, well, it's the Jets.
- 17:56Speaker 8: They're going to blow them out.
- 17:57Speaker 7: And I thought the Patriots would put them away with
- 18:00Speaker 7: a final touchdown to have a two-touchdown game. To the Jets' credit,
- 18:05Speaker 7: they never allowed that to happen. They kept close enough.
- 18:08Speaker 7: But the game ultimately was decided with the 10 points
- 18:11Speaker 7: at the end of the first half that takes a
- 18:13Speaker 7: close game. a 7-3 game into a 17-3 game, and
- 18:17Speaker 7: the Jets had to go into the locker room and say,
- 18:19Speaker 7: we can't play any better than that. They had the
- 18:22Speaker 7: ball literally for 20 minutes to 10, and they're losing 17-3.
- 18:26Speaker 7: They didn't turn it over. Now, technically they didn't turn
- 18:29Speaker 7: it over. I would say they turned it over twice.
- 18:31Speaker 5: With the fourth down.
- 18:32Speaker 7: Two fourth down stops. Those two plays in the last
- 18:35Speaker 7: minute and a half of the half, I think Evan
- 18:38Speaker 7: nailed it. I think that they did a lot of
- 18:40Speaker 7: things really well in this game. They just weren't good enough.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:43Speaker 8: Just not quite good enough.
- 18:45Speaker 5: Well, listen, like I said, division game, they can be funny.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Weird things happen. We see it. It's a story that's
- 18:54Speaker 5: as old as time in the NFL. I can tell
- 18:58Speaker 5: you probably the next time that they play, the Patriots
- 19:01Speaker 5: will absolutely blow them out.
- 19:03Speaker 8: I mean, that season might be over.
- 19:06Speaker 7: I mean, I'll wait. I'll wait to see what the
- 19:07Speaker 7: personnel is like. But if it's the same personnel that
- 19:10Speaker 7: played this week, I don't think that that will be
- 19:11Speaker 7: the case. I think the Jets are just exactly what
- 19:14Speaker 7: we said going into the game.
- 19:15Speaker 8: They're frisky.
- 19:16Speaker 7: They've raised the level of talent a little bit. They're
- 19:19Speaker 7: not the same team that they played last year.
- 19:21Speaker 8: That's why I.
- 19:21Speaker 7: Think the Patriots deserve to be happy about the win.
- 19:25Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 19:25Speaker 7: Not just because they were banged up at the end
- 19:27Speaker 7: of the game. I don't think they played a terrible game.
- 19:29Speaker 7: They made a couple of really bad plays.
- 19:32Speaker 5: And they didn't take advantage of some opportunities that they had.
- 19:34Speaker 5: And had they done that, this wouldn't have been as
- 19:36Speaker 5: close as it was. And I understand where Vrabel's coming from,
- 19:39Speaker 5: but I think a lot of it's performative. I think
- 19:41Speaker 5: he wants to make sure his players don't get comfortable. Yeah,
- 19:45Speaker 5: you've won, what, four out of five games now? Something
- 19:48Speaker 5: like that?
- 19:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Um you know so okay hey look at us but
- 19:52Speaker 5: he knows that this isn't good enough this isn't good
- 19:55Speaker 5: enough so you know particularly with the with the drops
- 19:58Speaker 5: the fumbles you cannot have.
- 20:00Speaker 3: That yeah i wonder how much the short week factored
- 20:02Speaker 3: into his kind of comportment that he took in that
- 20:05Speaker 3: angle where he knows it's a quick turnaround and He's
- 20:08Speaker 3: got to get these guys instantly ready to play. What
- 20:10Speaker 3: do you say? Like, you know, enjoy it for like
- 20:12Speaker 3: an hour.
- 20:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:13Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 20:14Speaker 8: I'm interested to see what their plans on Thursday night are.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 20:19Speaker 8: Short week, you know, how much were they working on
- 20:21Speaker 8: the Bears?
- 20:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:22Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 20:23Speaker 8: The coaching staff.
- 20:23Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 20:24Speaker 8: You know, like, because.
- 20:26Speaker 8: You're going to beat the Jets.
- 20:28Speaker 3: You're going to beat the Jets.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:30Speaker 5: The other thing with Vrabel, you get a little snippy
- 20:33Speaker 5: with Phil Perry.
- 20:34Speaker 11: Yep.
- 20:35Speaker 5: What else is new? Phil Perry asking about the depth.
- 20:38Speaker 5: And I understand the line of questioning. Phil Perry is like,
- 20:42Speaker 5: I think basically what he's saying is, is your depth
- 20:45Speaker 5: better than what you thought it was?
- 20:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 20:49Speaker 5: And if he answered that honestly, what do you think
- 20:52Speaker 5: his answer would be?
- 20:53Speaker 7: Well, yeah, because we added 10 players that we didn't
- 20:55Speaker 7: have at the time that I said that we didn't
- 20:56Speaker 7: have any depth. Which he keeps saying. And he keeps
- 20:58Speaker 7: saying it over and over again. That's why he got
- 21:00Speaker 7: snippy with Phil.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:02Speaker 7: And Phil knows that I love him. He does a really,
- 21:05Speaker 7: really good job. But Mike was right.
- 21:07Speaker 8: He's been asked that question several times. Now, Phil said... Well,
- 21:10Speaker 8: I didn't ask him.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Collective view.
- 21:13Speaker 5: And he kind of pointed out.
- 21:15Speaker 7: But, yeah, I think the answer has been, as Evan
- 21:18Speaker 7: just said, the guys that we're talking about that closed
- 21:22Speaker 7: out the game on Sunday, none of them were here
- 21:26Speaker 7: when he said that we don't have any depth. And
- 21:28Speaker 7: to illustrate the fact that he didn't think they have
- 21:30Speaker 7: any depth, he did something he says he's never done
- 21:33Speaker 7: as a head coach, adding that many players in that
- 21:36Speaker 7: short of amount of time from the time that camp
- 21:38Speaker 7: ended to the time the season started.
- 21:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:41Speaker 7: You know, Corey Kiner and Walter Rouse and Matt Pryor
- 21:44Speaker 7: were not Patriots when he said we don't have any depth.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:49Speaker 7: And that's just a few like off the top of
- 21:51Speaker 7: my head that were on the field at the end
- 21:52Speaker 7: of the game.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Yeah i was another one and.
- 21:55Speaker 7: Cameron lotto played a big role in that last.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Drive and he has been asked it several times yeah
- 22:00Speaker 4: he has and i i get it like i'm not
- 22:02Speaker 4: we're not picking on phil but like we've all done
- 22:04Speaker 4: it i get it like you start to get annoyed
- 22:07Speaker 4: because it's like i know what you're trying to get
- 22:09Speaker 4: at here that i was wrong and i should admit
- 22:11Speaker 4: that i was wrong but how many more times are
- 22:13Speaker 4: you am.
- 22:14Speaker 3: I going to ask the question well shouldn't you reframe
- 22:16Speaker 3: the question of that according to those results, you did
- 22:19Speaker 3: a pretty good job. After that point, when you said
- 22:21Speaker 3: you had no depth, you went out and you found
- 22:22Speaker 3: some depth and a guy, you know, like, like you're
- 22:25Speaker 3: talking about with, uh, with what's his face, the right tack, sorry,
- 22:27Speaker 3: the right guard, uh, Matt prior, he's played a hundred games,
- 22:29Speaker 3: you know, like they went, they found some places where
- 22:32Speaker 3: they could find some depth, some experienced guys so that
- 22:35Speaker 3: if they got to this position, they would, they wouldn't
- 22:37Speaker 3: be putting in undrafted rookies or, you know, something of
- 22:39Speaker 3: that nature into it. So I, I mean, I see
- 22:42Speaker 3: it as a positive and good reflection on the front
- 22:44Speaker 3: office staff and the job they've done coaching these guys up.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Now we'll see how it looks on a short week
- 22:48Speaker 3: in Chicago if those guys have to play the whole game.
- 22:50Speaker 5: But, you know, I just want to get into this
- 22:53Speaker 5: a little bit because they brought in those guys because
- 22:56Speaker 5: they had to.
- 22:58Speaker 8: Because they didn't feel like they had any depth. They
- 23:00Speaker 8: brought in some depth.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 8: That's what I think.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Well, okay, so you're saying that the guys that they
- 23:05Speaker 5: brought in, they thought were better than the guys they had?
- 23:08Speaker 7: Greg Van Roten and Matt Pryor have NFL starts under
- 23:12Speaker 7: their belt. You're not just putting some Andrew Rupsitch who
- 23:16Speaker 7: they just had to re-sign to the practice squad.
- 23:19Speaker 8: That's who they had for depth. at the time that
- 23:21Speaker 8: he said we have no depth.
- 23:22Speaker 5: Okay.
- 23:23Speaker 7: So he's adding NFL players. Now, Corey Kiner is probably
- 23:26Speaker 7: a little bit more of a tweener, but, like, even
- 23:28Speaker 7: Jalen Reed is a young safety that they think.
- 23:31Speaker 8: More of than, obviously, Houston did.
- 23:33Speaker 7: He played a little bit last year, so he comes in,
- 23:36Speaker 7: you know, adds a layer of depth. Well, not that
- 23:38Speaker 7: he's played, like, 100% of the snaps or anything, but
- 23:40Speaker 7: you see him out there. He's a part of, you know,
- 23:43Speaker 7: some of the stuff they do. So what exactly did
- 23:45Speaker 7: he say, you know.
- 23:49Speaker 5: We don't have a lot of depth. When did he
- 23:51Speaker 5: say that?
- 23:51Speaker 7: Philadelphia preseason game.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Right. Okay.
- 23:55Speaker 7: August. When they were asking about the plans for the
- 23:57Speaker 7: third preseason game, if anybody was going to play.
- 24:00Speaker 4: It was about not playing the starters during the preseason.
- 24:03Speaker 4: And he was worried about the starters getting hurt because
- 24:05Speaker 4: they had no depth.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:06Speaker 3: That was his response.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:09Speaker 5: And so the guys at that time that he was
- 24:12Speaker 5: referring to either got hurt or He brought in guys
- 24:18Speaker 5: from the outside that were better than the depth that
- 24:21Speaker 5: he had.
- 24:21Speaker 8: I think it's the latter.
- 24:23Speaker 7: I think he felt like he increased the level of
- 24:26Speaker 7: backup that he had available. And I'm not talking like this.
- 24:30Speaker 7: There's like 10 guys that we're talking about that they added. And,
- 24:34Speaker 7: you know, six or seven of those guys were NFL
- 24:38Speaker 7: veterans like Greg Van Roten. We have like 11 years,
- 24:41Speaker 7: something like that. Yeah, quite a while. You know, he's
- 24:44Speaker 7: a full-time starter. To Mike's point, Matt Pryor has... you know,
- 24:48Speaker 7: a boatload of starting experience.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Mo Sal's another one. I mean, you know, just fringe.
- 24:53Speaker 7: Guys, but guys that have played a little bit in
- 24:55Speaker 7: the league as opposed to undrafted rookies, um, that, you know,
- 25:00Speaker 7: like Khalil Jacobs, you know, is, I think he's still
- 25:03Speaker 7: on IR, right?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:05Speaker 7: So that I'm sorry.
- 25:07Speaker 8: Eric Hunter? No, no, no, the other guy.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Moussaou?
- 25:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that one.
- 25:12Speaker 7: He's played a little bit, right? He was one from
- 25:14Speaker 7: the Giants, right? Yep, he's played a little bit in there.
- 25:17Speaker 7: And he's played a little bit. I think he probably
- 25:19Speaker 7: gives you a little bit more experience than you would
- 25:21Speaker 7: have had had it be like Khalil Jacobs or, you know,
- 25:25Speaker 7: one of those guys. You know, that was here in
- 25:28Speaker 7: the preseason. So I do think that he went out
- 25:31Speaker 7: and got depth. that was a little bit better than
- 25:33Speaker 7: the depth that he had at the time that he
- 25:35Speaker 7: said that.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Yeah, even Latu, like, adding a third tight end.
- 25:38Speaker 8: He's better than Tanner Arkin.
- 25:39Speaker 5: He is.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:41Speaker 8: Like, as an example, that's another one for one.
- 25:43Speaker 3: And so now are these guys... you know, getting experience
- 25:45Speaker 3: that now they're going to be your depth going forward
- 25:47Speaker 3: next year. I mean, some of them like, you know, Reed,
- 25:49Speaker 3: I mean, some of these guys are a little bit
- 25:51Speaker 3: older prior that they probably won't be.
- 25:52Speaker 7: Those guys probably won't.
- 25:53Speaker 3: But maybe you chipped away a little bit at a
- 25:56Speaker 3: few spots with somebody like Reed or maybe somebody like
- 25:58Speaker 3: Latu in those spots that next year you have a
- 26:01Speaker 3: little bit more depth and you continue to build the
- 26:03Speaker 3: program that way.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Possibly.
- 26:06Speaker 5: Possibly.
- 26:06Speaker 7: And I would also say, you know, you're playing a
- 26:08Speaker 7: whole bunch of like young guys on special teams.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 8: And it was a little rocky.
- 26:14Speaker 7: For a while.
- 26:15Speaker 8: I think they may have had their best special teams day.
- 26:18Speaker 5: I think their coverage is pretty good.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Besides the missed extra point.
- 26:21Speaker 7: Yeah, but again, I always get made fun of for this.
- 26:24Speaker 7: That's one guy, though. I differentiate the specialists from special teams.
- 26:30Speaker 7: When I talk about special teams, I'm talking about covering
- 26:32Speaker 7: kicks and returning them. Covering punts and returning them. The
- 26:37Speaker 7: specialist itself, to me, is a very individual thing. And
- 26:40Speaker 7: I don't blame... Jeremy Springer because Andy Borgalis missed.
- 26:44Speaker 3: An extra point.
- 26:45Speaker 7: You know what I mean? Like, if the kicker gets
- 26:48Speaker 7: the yips, I don't blame that.
- 26:49Speaker 8: I don't necessarily say that. That's an indication that you
- 26:51Speaker 8: have poor special teams. Now, it happens.
- 26:54Speaker 7: Like, the Rams... The Rams have had poor special teams
- 26:57Speaker 7: for five years, and it runs the gamut. They don't
- 26:59Speaker 7: cover kicks well, and they don't make their field goals.
- 27:03Speaker 7: They get them blocked and whatnot.
- 27:04Speaker 5: I would like to cut down on the penalties on
- 27:07Speaker 5: special teams. Yeah, even that, only one. I guess every
- 27:10Speaker 5: team has a lot of those.
- 27:13Speaker 7: And I was thinking a lot, too, when I was
- 27:14Speaker 7: talking about, like, in my mind, like, he blows that
- 27:17Speaker 7: guy up on that kickoff return. Kickoff coverage.
- 27:19Speaker 5: Kiner had a nice return.
- 27:20Speaker 8: Kickoff return.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:22Speaker 7: They were consistently out over the 35, and they were
- 27:25Speaker 7: consistently stopping them inside the 25. Yeah. That hasn't happened
- 27:29Speaker 7: all year.
- 27:29Speaker 8: No, it's been so glaring, I've noticed it. Big time
- 27:32Speaker 8: hidden yards.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 5: Hidden yards.
- 27:34Speaker 3: I mean, the Kiner won out to the 40 for
- 27:36Speaker 3: that last drive, too. I mean, that's... Look at me
- 27:38Speaker 3: talking special teams.
- 27:39Speaker 5: I know.
- 27:39Speaker 3: I don't care.
- 27:40Speaker 8: I don't care. Can I tell you one thing that
- 27:42Speaker 8: I noticed?
- 27:43Speaker 5: Okay.
- 27:43Speaker 7: And I forget where someone had it on Twitter, and
- 27:47Speaker 7: I wish I could remember where I saw it because
- 27:48Speaker 7: I would credit them. But I keep talking about how
- 27:52Speaker 7: impressed I am with Zach Kor and all the different
- 27:54Speaker 7: ways that he finds to generate a pass rush because
- 27:58Speaker 7: I just don't think they have the horses to do
- 27:59Speaker 7: it conventionally. And Elijah Ponder gets another sack in the
- 28:03Speaker 7: red zone, big play in the game, right? Instead of 17-17,
- 28:07Speaker 7: it's 17-13 because you come up with a sack in
- 28:10Speaker 7: the red zone on third and five. And you watch
- 28:12Speaker 7: the play, and he has, and I assume this is
- 28:16Speaker 7: all designed, right? Like, Robert Spillane goes into that play,
- 28:22Speaker 7: in my mind, with nothing but the intent to set
- 28:25Speaker 7: a pick on Fashanu, which completely frees up Elijah Ponder
- 28:31Speaker 7: to come inside. And not only he sets a really
- 28:33Speaker 7: good pick, but he continues on to kind of flash
- 28:38Speaker 7: in Geno Smith's face, which kind of forced him to
- 28:41Speaker 7: sort of stay in the pocket and step up, and
- 28:43Speaker 7: he steps right into Ponder. And this is why, like,
- 28:46Speaker 7: the whole, like, oh, they have edge guys. Like, okay. Like,
- 28:51Speaker 7: the numbers are what they are. He's got, like, 11
- 28:53Speaker 7: or 12 sacks since, like, the midway portion of last year.
- 28:56Speaker 7: They are what they are.
- 28:57Speaker 8: But I just think it's so well coordinated up front.
- 29:00Speaker 3: And I'd say the same thing about the Barmore sack
- 29:03Speaker 3: and the Milton Williams sack that, you know, I think
- 29:05Speaker 3: Barmore maybe a little bit less so, but this is
- 29:07Speaker 3: kind of all their sacks. Like, it's all coordinated and together.
- 29:10Speaker 3: It's not just one guy. Sometimes Milton Williams will blow
- 29:13Speaker 3: some dude up or Christian Barmore. But generally speaking, I
- 29:16Speaker 3: think it's, to your point, coordination. I really liked that play.
- 29:19Speaker 3: And again, did you post that, F? Because I don't
- 29:22Speaker 3: know where I saw it now. It's funny because I
- 29:25Speaker 3: definitely took note of that exact same thing.
- 29:27Speaker 5: It's not the Packers guy throwing Max Lane to the ground.
- 29:29Speaker 8: They do that? The Packers guy? You mean Reggie White?
- 29:34Speaker 5: Yeah, the Packers guy.
- 29:36Speaker 3: I talked to him last week. He thought he did
- 29:37Speaker 3: pretty good in the first half.
- 29:38Speaker 12: All time, dude.
- 29:40Speaker 8: He calls him that guy.
- 29:41Speaker 4: The pick pressures are more prevalent now, I would say,
- 29:47Speaker 4: over the last couple of years where instead of just
- 29:50Speaker 4: having a penetrator and a looper, the penetrator is really
- 29:54Speaker 4: just setting a pick on the primary blocker that the
- 29:57Speaker 4: looper is looping on.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:59Speaker 8: That is 100% it.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Like, Spillane's job is literally just to pick, like in basketball,
- 30:05Speaker 4: pick the left tackle.
- 30:07Speaker 8: And in football, you can really pick them. So you
- 30:08Speaker 8: can de-click that. Oh, yeah, no, that's legal. I mean,
- 30:10Speaker 8: that's not like a rub route. No, that's physicality.
- 30:14Speaker 7: That's football.
- 30:14Speaker 8: And if you watch the overhead of the play.
- 30:18Speaker 4: They have a bunch set, three-receiver bunch to Omar Cooper Jr.
- 30:21Speaker 4: 's wide open on the angle route, and the pressure
- 30:25Speaker 4: closed the pocket, and he didn't get the ball off.
- 30:27Speaker 4: So it saved the touchdown probably, and it was a
- 30:30Speaker 4: big four-point play in the game. So I agree with
- 30:32Speaker 4: you that their coordination is fantastic, whether they're getting free
- 30:36Speaker 4: runners or creating pressure with stunts. They also created a
- 30:40Speaker 4: stunt pressure on Charles Woods' interception as well, Daquan Jones
- 30:44Speaker 4: and Ponder. or if they're getting one-on-ones because they're threatening
- 30:49Speaker 4: pressure and they're going to get guys one-on-one, like the
- 30:52Speaker 4: Barmore sack, you know, he gets one-on-one against the right
- 30:55Speaker 4: guard and just detonates the right guard in sacks.
- 30:58Speaker 3: Also good at like opening up to the defensive backs
- 31:01Speaker 3: to like, they'll coordinate to try to get like that
- 31:03Speaker 3: right side B gap to open up. And then Craig
- 31:05Speaker 3: Woodson or somebody comes flying in.
- 31:07Speaker 4: They do a fantastic job of putting the running back
- 31:09Speaker 4: in conflict. Like the running back is in two-on-ones the
- 31:12Speaker 4: entire game. And like that, that, When you talk to
- 31:16Speaker 4: defensive coaches and listen to the clinics and stuff like that,
- 31:19Speaker 4: they all want to attack the running back and blitz pickup.
- 31:23Speaker 4: So what the Patriots will do is they'll send two
- 31:25Speaker 4: guys through the same gap. And so now the running
- 31:27Speaker 4: back has to kind of pick which guy he's going
- 31:30Speaker 4: to block. And every time, someone's going to be unblocked.
- 31:33Speaker 4: So normally the back takes the inside guy and he'll
- 31:36Speaker 4: bump down. It's usually the linebacker. So there's a third
- 31:39Speaker 4: down play. Marcus Jones just comes through the middle of
- 31:41Speaker 4: the line unblocked. and Geno just has to dirt it.
- 31:44Speaker 4: So they do a really good job of putting the
- 31:46Speaker 4: backs in conflict, getting one-on-ones for their better rushers. The
- 31:50Speaker 4: stunt play pressures are really, really good. So they're doing
- 31:53Speaker 4: a lot of it with scheme. They absolutely are.
- 31:55Speaker 5: All right, let's talk about Drake Mays Day because I
- 31:59Speaker 5: thought he had a good game.
- 32:00Speaker 7: I agree.
- 32:02Speaker 5: In terms of just being a good quarterback and the
- 32:05Speaker 5: decisions that he made and seeing the field, avoiding pressure.
- 32:10Speaker 5: making the right reads. I think he had a really
- 32:13Speaker 5: good game.
- 32:13Speaker 3: It's kind of funny how the game works out where
- 32:15Speaker 3: you go three and out, and then you have two
- 32:18Speaker 3: plays and a touchdown. You've only run five plays. It's
- 32:22Speaker 3: just hard to get into that rhythm a little bit,
- 32:25Speaker 3: I feel like, when it's a strange start like that.
- 32:26Speaker 3: But I just think he's been way more comfortable in
- 32:29Speaker 3: the pocket. He hasn't been making the stupid mistakes. He
- 32:31Speaker 3: hasn't been drifting into pressure. And once you get this A.J.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Brown thing worked out, I think they'll be really cooking.
- 32:38Speaker 5: And even a play that I thought he was inaccurate on,
- 32:40Speaker 5: I was schooled by you guys. I think it was
- 32:43Speaker 5: a throw to Raritan down the middle that I thought
- 32:46Speaker 5: was behind him, but it had to be where it
- 32:49Speaker 5: was placed.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that his poise and his feet in
- 32:53Speaker 4: the pocket are remarkably better.
- 32:55Speaker 7: It's weird.
- 32:56Speaker 4: His pocket movement, his ability to extend plays in the pocket.
- 33:01Speaker 4: The Pop Douglas touchdown, he just steps through the pocket,
- 33:03Speaker 4: keeps his eyes down the field, Pop works open. The
- 33:06Speaker 4: Romeo Dobbs big play, three-man rush, doesn't get antsy, sits
- 33:10Speaker 4: back there all day. Those types of things I think
- 33:14Speaker 4: are significantly improved. from the first couple weeks of the season.
- 33:18Speaker 4: He just looks like he's looser back there.
- 33:20Speaker 5: Why?
- 33:21Speaker 7: This is why if I were an opponent, I would
- 33:24Speaker 7: do everything I can to heat him up because I
- 33:25Speaker 7: don't want to have that happen. Just standing back there
- 33:29Speaker 7: and dissecting you with 42-yard touchdown passes.
- 33:31Speaker 3: That's what I'm interested to see. Is it that simple
- 33:33Speaker 3: as if you do get some pressure, you'll knock him
- 33:36Speaker 3: off this pace? Because it's bizarre to me that he
- 33:38Speaker 3: just kind of flipped the switch at a certain point
- 33:40Speaker 3: a couple games ago, and he looks like the same
- 33:42Speaker 3: old guy.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Why?
- 33:43Speaker 3: Was it... Was he just had the yips and the
- 33:46Speaker 3: Seattle and the playoffs and all that and he just
- 33:48Speaker 3: was out of his sorts and now he finally just
- 33:50Speaker 3: got back into rhythm and got his confidence back? Or
- 33:52Speaker 3: is it just he didn't really play in games in
- 33:54Speaker 3: the summer and now he's getting into a flow and
- 33:56Speaker 3: he feels it? There's a million different things you could say.
- 33:58Speaker 5: If the Patriots continue or if Drake continues to play
- 34:02Speaker 5: well this season, that'll be one of the stories that
- 34:04Speaker 5: I hope. comes out after the season of what happened. Yeah.
- 34:08Speaker 5: What happened?
- 34:08Speaker 7: I'm not getting clipped.
- 34:09Speaker 5: How did you turn it?
- 34:10Speaker 8: I think he's a slow starter.
- 34:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:12Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 34:13Speaker 4: I think he was a slow, I think he started
- 34:14Speaker 4: slow last year. I think the first three games of
- 34:16Speaker 4: the season, they were one and two. And I don't
- 34:18Speaker 4: think that, you know, the Raider game, the Steeler game
- 34:20Speaker 4: turned the ball over like crazy. Like I, they didn't
- 34:23Speaker 4: play well offensively in those games either. I think, McDaniels builds.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I think this scheme builds over the course of the season,
- 34:29Speaker 4: which helps as well get him like going in these games.
- 34:34Speaker 4: But I think the biggest difference to me is just
- 34:37Speaker 4: I thought early on in the season, he looked like
- 34:39Speaker 4: he was.
- 34:39Speaker 3: Stuck in the mud in the pocket, like he just wasn't.
- 34:42Speaker 4: Moving around he wasn't dodging rushers he wasn't uh you
- 34:45Speaker 4: know extending plays not outside the pocket inside the pocket
- 34:49Speaker 4: like finding those different you know clean air spaces and
- 34:52Speaker 4: things like that and he just looks like he's playing
- 34:54Speaker 4: with a lot more like freedom looseness just confidence uh
- 34:58Speaker 4: in the pocket some of it's the defenses like they're
- 35:03Speaker 4: not playing as good of defenses I don't want to
- 35:07Speaker 4: do the whole Felger and Maz thing and make it
- 35:09Speaker 4: about easy schedule and all that kind of stuff, but
- 35:13Speaker 4: he's a really good player, and when they play defenses
- 35:15Speaker 4: like the Jets, the Bills, and the Raiders, he looks
- 35:18Speaker 4: like an MVP.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Right, but even take the defenses out of it. A
- 35:21Speaker 3: stupid decision, whether it's a good defense or a bad defense,
- 35:24Speaker 3: to throw it right to another guy is.
- 35:25Speaker 5: What it is. Defenses sometimes force you into that.
- 35:27Speaker 7: Throwing it right to another guy, obviously that's different, but
- 35:30Speaker 7: there were some plays, and I did look at Evan's
- 35:33Speaker 7: Film Guru. I'm sorry, I was cheating on you a
- 35:36Speaker 7: little bit.
- 35:37Speaker 8: I did look at Greg Bedard a little bit.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 35:39Speaker 7: And I thought Greg.
- 35:40Speaker 5: Don't you have to pay to watch that?
- 35:41Speaker 7: Greg had a.
- 35:42Speaker 8: Well, no, we get the clips.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Whoa, whoa.
- 35:44Speaker 8: Don't tell me what you're paying for.
- 35:46Speaker 7: I do not pay for that. You don't have to
- 35:47Speaker 7: pay extra to... No matter what they tell you, you
- 35:50Speaker 7: don't have to pay extra.
- 35:51Speaker 5: Okay.
- 35:52Speaker 7: Anyway, he was showing, like, the touchdown pass to Dobbs,
- 35:57Speaker 7: and he kind of pointed out that, really, the throw
- 36:01Speaker 7: is brown.
- 36:02Speaker 9: Mm-hmm.
- 36:02Speaker 7: Because you can't anticipate you're going to have almost six
- 36:05Speaker 7: seconds to throw. Unless like he goes, I'd like to
- 36:08Speaker 7: have them under truth serum here. Does he realize they
- 36:11Speaker 7: only rushed two on this play? And Sherwood is like
- 36:14Speaker 7: the third guy. And he's just kind of hanging around
- 36:16Speaker 7: as a, as a spy. Did he realize he was
- 36:19Speaker 7: going to have all that time? And that's why he,
- 36:21Speaker 7: cause he looks like he just, he sees Brown's wide
- 36:24Speaker 7: open and it's like a 20, 25 yard gain. It's
- 36:26Speaker 7: not like a little check down. And, He pumps, and
- 36:30Speaker 7: then he doesn't throw it, and then he waits, and
- 36:32Speaker 7: then here comes Dobbs on the deep over, and he comes,
- 36:36Speaker 7: you know, and he threw a great, great ball to him, too,
- 36:39Speaker 7: in the end zone. It was just perfect. But, you know, like,
- 36:44Speaker 7: Greg's point was, like, maybe that's not the best decision.
- 36:48Speaker 7: And then he pointed out another one. I think it
- 36:51Speaker 7: was the Douglas one on the touchdown.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:54Speaker 4: I hesitate to say that maybe it wasn't the best decision.
- 36:57Speaker 8: Right, well, and he doesn't, like, I don't want to
- 36:59Speaker 8: make it, Greg, I apologize for Greg.
- 37:01Speaker 3: I understand what he's saying.
- 37:02Speaker 8: He's not killing, he's not ripping him. But when you
- 37:04Speaker 8: throw a.
- 37:04Speaker 4: 42-yard touchdown, I think we take it. So, you know,
- 37:08Speaker 4: they're actually, they're running Haas, Fred. Uh, they're running Haas. And, uh,
- 37:13Speaker 4: this one is actually, can.
- 37:15Speaker 8: You tell us what it is now? He's talked about
- 37:17Speaker 8: it so many times. So this one's a little bit
- 37:19Speaker 8: different though.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Uh, so that instead of having mirrored Haas where they
- 37:22Speaker 4: have the hitches and the seams to both sides, they
- 37:25Speaker 4: have a variation of it where the X Brown runs
- 37:28Speaker 4: the deep dig on the backside of it.
- 37:30Speaker 5: This is where he comes out.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:33Speaker 5: Drake's on the move, right? No, no, no, no. He's
- 37:36Speaker 5: not on Haas juke. He's not moving.
- 37:38Speaker 1: No.
- 37:39Speaker 8: They ran it with Tom Brady. He gets so dismissive
- 37:41Speaker 8: of you.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Fred said it in the press box and then it
- 37:43Speaker 3: just goes, they're not even in empty.
- 37:46Speaker 8: Explain the play a thousand times.
- 37:48Speaker 5: It is.
- 37:48Speaker 8: I wish we could have a, I wish we had
- 37:50Speaker 8: a date.
- 37:51Speaker 5: That was funny.
- 37:51Speaker 8: We should be mic'd up. Gotta be empty. He might
- 37:55Speaker 8: not even be in the car, Sonny.
- 37:58Speaker 5: I'm like, Haas Jukes.
- 37:59Speaker 3: They're not even an empty. They have to be an empty.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Hitches outside, seams up the middle, and a juke around
- 38:05Speaker 3: the middle.
- 38:05Speaker 4: And so they have the three receiver sides running Haas.
- 38:09Speaker 5: A.J.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Brown's running the deep dig. So Dobbs' route is a seam.
- 38:13Speaker 4: He's actually supposed to run it in the seam, and
- 38:15Speaker 4: he does. Initially, Minka Fitzpatrick is playing the post in
- 38:19Speaker 4: the middle of the field. And I asked Drake May
- 38:22Speaker 4: about it after the game, and he said that he
- 38:24Speaker 4: felt like he was just a.
- 38:24Speaker 8: Little late to A.J. Brown over the middle, and he
- 38:26Speaker 8: didn't want to throw late over the middle of the field.
- 38:28Speaker 7: And that's kind of what Bedard is talking about. He goes,
- 38:30Speaker 7: it's there. The ball should be ripped right here. And
- 38:33Speaker 7: he wasn't ripping. He wasn't killing May for making a
- 38:36Speaker 7: terrible play and getting away. He wasn't like that. So
- 38:39Speaker 7: I want to be fair to Greg. I want to
- 38:41Speaker 7: be fair to Greg. He wasn't doing that. I understand.
- 38:45Speaker 1: So.
- 38:46Speaker 4: After he kind of decided to pass up Brown over
- 38:49Speaker 4: the middle of the field, Micah Fitzpatrick is playing the post-middle.
- 38:53Speaker 8: He jumps A.J. Brown's route because Drake May is looking
- 38:56Speaker 8: at A.J.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Brown.
- 38:57Speaker 8: He actually almost threw it. So he jumps A.J.
- 38:59Speaker 4: Brown's route, and Dobbs wisely saw that there was nobody
- 39:03Speaker 4: in the middle of the field anymore and just took
- 39:05Speaker 4: it across the field. And he said Drake's answer to
- 39:10Speaker 4: it was it was a three-man rush, so he knew.
- 39:12Speaker 8: That he didn't have to go anywhere.
- 39:15Speaker 4: And then he credited Dobbs for breaking the route off
- 39:17Speaker 4: and going across the field.
- 39:19Speaker 7: So it was an accident. Like, it's a happy accident
- 39:22Speaker 7: for sure. And that's kind of what Greg's point was.
- 39:25Speaker 9: 100%.
- 39:25Speaker 7: And then, you know, just to illustrate again, like, the
- 39:28Speaker 7: Jets just sort of have indecent you know, schemes, but
- 39:31Speaker 7: just not executing them. Two guys are five yards away
- 39:35Speaker 7: from the line of scrimmage on Douglas in the flat.
- 39:38Speaker 7: Another guy is on Henderson in the other flat, the
- 39:42Speaker 7: other side, and they have... Like one guy covering this
- 39:45Speaker 7: deep in, which is going to be a good chunk
- 39:47Speaker 7: play to A.J.
- 39:48Speaker 8: Brown.
- 39:48Speaker 7: And that's when, as Evan says, Fitzpatrick realizes he's kind
- 39:52Speaker 7: of all by himself. I got to go up there.
- 39:54Speaker 7: And now it gives again almost six seconds later. He
- 39:58Speaker 7: just runs away from the one guy. Dobbs has got
- 40:01Speaker 7: one guy with no inside help, no leverage, and he
- 40:04Speaker 7: just gets cooked. Because they're squatting on all these routes. Like,
- 40:07Speaker 7: there was two guys around Henry, I think, in the
- 40:10Speaker 7: middle of the field, too. So they have all these
- 40:12Speaker 7: extra guys in coverage, and they're all covering the wrong guys. Like,
- 40:16Speaker 7: give them the five-yard pass. Take away the 42-yard touchdown,
- 40:20Speaker 7: you know?
- 40:21Speaker 3: Well, I guess we're going to, I mean, there's not
- 40:22Speaker 3: a lot of good defenses left on the schedule. I mean, obviously,
- 40:25Speaker 3: I just think Buffalo, you've been saying, Paul, that they'll
- 40:27Speaker 3: be better, and then Minnesota the next week. Well, maybe not.
- 40:30Speaker 3: So maybe, I mean, Minnesota and Denver? Kansas City. Kansas City?
- 40:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:35Speaker 8: Green Bay.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Green Bay.
- 40:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know if Michael will be back, but
- 40:38Speaker 4: they're getting better defensively.
- 40:41Speaker 5: Obviously, they've only got 11 games left.
- 40:43Speaker 7: I'm going to save it for my fresh take, but
- 40:45Speaker 7: I have a take on something like that. We have
- 40:47Speaker 7: a fresh take today, right? I've got a fresh take.
- 40:49Speaker 13: All right.
- 40:49Speaker 8: Green Bay is coming back.
- 40:51Speaker 5: That team looks good again. All right. 855-PATS-500 is the hotline.
- 40:54Speaker 5: Podcasts at Patriots.com is the email address. Let's open it up.
- 40:58Speaker 5: We'll start with Cole in Minnesota. What's up, Cole?
- 41:02Speaker 14: What?
- 41:03Speaker 6: Hey, guys.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Hey.
- 41:05Speaker 7: Hey, Cole.
- 41:06Speaker 14: Just a couple things I was worried about for this
- 41:09Speaker 14: next game. It feels like we're finally starting to get
- 41:11Speaker 14: back in a flow. You know, Drake Mays throwing the
- 41:14Speaker 14: ball good again. I guess I'm really worried that they're
- 41:17Speaker 14: going to kind of revert back to week one and two,
- 41:20Speaker 14: where there were.
- 41:21Speaker 6: A lot of chips at the line, a lot of
- 41:23Speaker 6: help for the offensive linemen. You know, I just don't
- 41:27Speaker 6: want to, like, I feel like we're not, they're starting
- 41:29Speaker 6: to spread things out a little bit. Drake may start
- 41:31Speaker 6: to cook. I'm worried. I'm going to have to look
- 41:33Speaker 6: at this game through two different lenses.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 41:36Speaker 6: Is that what is Drake Megan step up and elevate
- 41:39Speaker 6: the rest of the guys? Or is it going to
- 41:40Speaker 6: go back to where I got to look at it
- 41:42Speaker 6: through like a Justin Herbert lens and be like, well,
- 41:45Speaker 6: what are you expecting to do? He's got a bunch
- 41:47Speaker 6: of undrafted linemen out there and can protect.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:53Speaker 6: Take it offline. Appreciate you guys.
- 41:54Speaker 5: Okay. I mean, what do you think?
- 41:58Speaker 4: I understand the long-term concern in this game specifically against Chicago.
- 42:01Speaker 3: That's kind of how you want to play the Bears.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Their run defense stinks, and they give up a ton
- 42:07Speaker 4: of explosive pass plays.
- 42:08Speaker 8: That's been really their biggest issues.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Their numbers defensively are not horrible on the whole, but
- 42:16Speaker 4: when you really dig into them, they give up a
- 42:18Speaker 4: lot of big plays, and a lot of the big
- 42:20Speaker 4: plays they give up in the passing game are off
- 42:22Speaker 4: play action, where they're leaving extra blockers in, and they're
- 42:26Speaker 4: kind of loading up the protection and sending two or
- 42:28Speaker 4: three guys in.
- 42:29Speaker 8: Into the route. So uniquely like.
- 42:31Speaker 4: Matchup wise on Thursday night, I actually think that they
- 42:34Speaker 4: can play that style of football. If they can run
- 42:36Speaker 4: the ball and they can play action off the run game,
- 42:39Speaker 4: then I think that they can give the offensive line
- 42:41Speaker 4: extra help and it might not hurt them in a game.
- 42:44Speaker 5: Well, you know, they always say, you know, the best,
- 42:48Speaker 5: the best offense is a good defense or no, the
- 42:50Speaker 5: other way around. The best defense is a good offense.
- 42:52Speaker 5: And so do you think that when Caleb Williams is
- 42:55Speaker 5: playing and Ben Johnson is clicking, it puts pressure on
- 42:58Speaker 5: any defense, on any other offense to score points. Will
- 43:04Speaker 5: that affect the game?
- 43:05Speaker 7: That's how they won Sunday. When they come out, touchdown, touchdown,
- 43:08Speaker 7: they immediately put Atlanta in a hole. Eventually it was 31-7.
- 43:13Speaker 7: They made a run, but I think Evan's right. Chicago's
- 43:17Speaker 7: defense is not good.
- 43:18Speaker 5: But their offense helps it.
- 43:20Speaker 8: Their offense is good.
- 43:22Speaker 7: It's very good, but This is another one like the
- 43:24Speaker 7: numbers on the defense probably look OK. But when they
- 43:28Speaker 7: played competent offenses, they've been shredded like they played the
- 43:31Speaker 7: Vikings in a monsoon. Minnesota wasn't. I mean, they were
- 43:35Speaker 7: playing with a backup quarterback to start and no one
- 43:37Speaker 7: could move the ball in that game. And then, you know,
- 43:40Speaker 7: they play Green Bay a few weeks later and it's like.
- 43:44Speaker 7: pitch and catch for Jordan Love. He looked like he
- 43:46Speaker 7: was like the best deep ball throw in the history
- 43:48Speaker 7: of football.
- 43:49Speaker 3: He was off play action in that game.
- 43:51Speaker 4: He was 10 for 11 for 228 yards and a
- 43:54Speaker 4: touchdown against him.
- 43:55Speaker 7: So if you play a team with an, the Patriots
- 43:58Speaker 7: should be able to, to put up some points in
- 44:01Speaker 7: this game, even with the offensive line situation, that would
- 44:04Speaker 7: be my main concern is that communication. So you're on
- 44:07Speaker 7: the road and you know, in primetime environment, it's probably
- 44:10Speaker 7: going to be loud there. Are they ready?
- 44:13Speaker 8: Like, fundamentally, are.
- 44:14Speaker 7: They ready to communicate and make sure that anything that
- 44:17Speaker 7: Dennis Allen throws at them, you know, that they're getting
- 44:20Speaker 7: in the way? That would be my big concern is
- 44:23Speaker 7: that they just don't have enough time to, you know,
- 44:27Speaker 7: effectively take part in a shootout.
- 44:30Speaker 4: This Bears offense is different than what you would expect,
- 44:36Speaker 4: I think, in a lot of ways. They don't throw
- 44:37Speaker 4: the ball down the field a ton.
- 44:39Speaker 1: No.
- 44:39Speaker 4: They possess the ball. They run the football. They are
- 44:43Speaker 4: averaging 73 plays a game offensively. It's number one in
- 44:47Speaker 4: the league.
- 44:47Speaker 8: Mike kept up through that one out there yesterday.
- 44:50Speaker 4: And they they are right now. They are like a
- 44:55Speaker 4: march the ball, sustain offense type of offense. Now they're
- 44:58Speaker 4: averaging 25 a game, even with Caleb missing time. But
- 45:01Speaker 4: this is not like an explosive downfield passing game right now.
- 45:06Speaker 4: they play a lot of multiple tight end too. So
- 45:09Speaker 4: they don't have a ton of speed, like pure speed
- 45:11Speaker 4: on the field most of the time either. So it's a,
- 45:14Speaker 4: it's a little bit of a different offense right now
- 45:17Speaker 4: than like what you might expect out of like a,
- 45:19Speaker 4: a true offensive guru.
- 45:21Speaker 8: Like they're, they're putting together like long drives.
- 45:24Speaker 5: The reason he's a guru is he knows how to
- 45:26Speaker 5: use his players.
- 45:27Speaker 13: Right.
- 45:27Speaker 7: But those numbers point to what you were talking about.
- 45:29Speaker 7: They use their offense to protect the defense by keeping
- 45:32Speaker 7: them on the sideline. You know, we, we made a,
- 45:35Speaker 7: a lot of how much the Jets held the ball. Now,
- 45:37Speaker 7: that evened out in the second half. The Patriots had
- 45:39Speaker 7: the ball most of the second half of the game Sunday.
- 45:41Speaker 7: Do you know, like, when the Jets played the Bears,
- 45:44Speaker 7: the Bears had it for 44 minutes with their backup
- 45:46Speaker 7: quarterback playing.
- 45:48Speaker 5: 44.
- 45:49Speaker 8: Like, I don't know if I've ever seen that.
- 45:51Speaker 3: And you can't ask your defense on a Thursday night
- 45:53Speaker 3: on short rest to play 70 plays. It's going to
- 45:56Speaker 3: get tough in those fourth quarters, you know?
- 45:58Speaker 4: Yeah, they have really– that's how they're winning games right now.
- 46:03Speaker 4: And a lot of it is because of how teams
- 46:04Speaker 4: are defending Caleb. Like obviously like, you know, with Drake may,
- 46:08Speaker 4: we have the conversations about taking profits and checking the
- 46:11Speaker 4: ball down.
- 46:11Speaker 8: So he's seeing a lot of too high coverage. He doesn't,
- 46:14Speaker 8: no one plays man against Caleb cause they don't want
- 46:16Speaker 8: him to run around.
- 46:17Speaker 4: So they, they play a lot of, they have to like,
- 46:20Speaker 4: they kind of have to take what the defenses are
- 46:22Speaker 4: giving them. And they, they, they've really kind of won
- 46:26Speaker 4: games that way. And the defense only on the field
- 46:29Speaker 4: for like 50 plays a game. So even though the,
- 46:32Speaker 4: some of the counting stats, like points allowed yards are
- 46:35Speaker 4: pretty good. The under the hood numbers, like yards per
- 46:38Speaker 4: play and stuff like that are bad. So they're giving up,
- 46:41Speaker 4: a lot of yards per play, but they're just not
- 46:44Speaker 4: on the field for that much to give up a
- 46:46Speaker 4: lot of yards. So, like, when they're on the field,
- 46:48Speaker 4: they're kind of getting gashed, but they're just not on
- 46:50Speaker 4: the field a ton.
- 46:51Speaker 5: Well, if you're giving up a lot of yards per play,
- 46:53Speaker 5: that's going to shorten the drive for the opposing offense.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:56Speaker 8: That's part of it, too.
- 46:57Speaker 3: So, I mean, do you have to go in with
- 46:58Speaker 3: your plan, though, to counter it of, like, we have
- 47:00Speaker 3: to possess the ball a little bit? You know, like,
- 47:02Speaker 3: we can't, you know, as much as you want to
- 47:04Speaker 3: have big plays.
- 47:04Speaker 5: Just score points.
- 47:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 47:05Speaker 5: Just score points.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Don't think about it too much.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:08Speaker 8: No, I'm with Deuce.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:10Speaker 8: I think you don't want to purposely not try to score.
- 47:13Speaker 5: No, but you take what they're giving you.
- 47:15Speaker 4: But I think that right now, their time of possession,
- 47:19Speaker 4: their play discrepancy, on a short week, you can't get
- 47:23Speaker 4: out snapped by 25 snaps.
- 47:26Speaker 3: That's not... Unless you're scoring.
- 47:29Speaker 5: Unless you're scoring points.
- 47:31Speaker 8: On every other play.
- 47:32Speaker 4: Unless you're putting up explosives left and right, it's going
- 47:35Speaker 4: to be a tough way to live.
- 47:37Speaker 5: Brandon's in Pennsylvania. What's up, Brandon?
- 47:41Speaker 13: Hey, how you guys doing? I was on last week.
- 47:42Speaker 13: I don't know if you remember me, but the Eli
- 47:44Speaker 13: Red in Jersey.
- 47:45Speaker 5: Absolutely, yeah. How's that working out for you?
- 47:48Speaker 13: Well, I'll give you an update on that. I did
- 47:50Speaker 13: call the Patriots Pro Shop, and during mid-conversation of the
- 47:53Speaker 13: Eli Red in Jersey, I was.
- 47:54Speaker 5: Hung up on.
- 47:56Speaker 8: What?
- 47:57Speaker 5: Like because they didn't like you, or what happened?
- 48:01Speaker 13: All I said was, hey, I'm giving a call here.
- 48:03Speaker 13: I was on Patriots on field, and they suggested giving
- 48:04Speaker 13: you guys a call looking for a custom Eli Red
- 48:06Speaker 13: in Jersey. And I said, we don't have those, and
- 48:08Speaker 13: they hung up right up on me. Oh, I got
- 48:10Speaker 13: to talk like, Oh, you guys got something else.
- 48:13Speaker 5: Wow. I'm going to talk to them. That's not right.
- 48:16Speaker 8: It's Massachusetts.
- 48:17Speaker 7: That's how we are.
- 48:18Speaker 3: Don't take it personally.
- 48:20Speaker 13: I'm sorry. I was hurt a little bit, but on
- 48:23Speaker 13: that note, I do want to say, I did go
- 48:25Speaker 13: ahead and buy a Drake made elite Jersey and phenomenal.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Love it.
- 48:29Speaker 13: And I will someday get a stitch.
- 48:31Speaker 12: You'll I read in Jersey.
- 48:32Speaker 13: If you guys ever hear something, let me know, maybe
- 48:34Speaker 13: reach out, but I'm trying so hard to get Eli Raritan.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 48:37Speaker 7: All right.
- 48:38Speaker 5: Well, and then, uh, We'll look into that.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 48:42Speaker 13: And then lastly, I do want to ask your take
- 48:44Speaker 13: on how you feel right now, how Eli Reardon is
- 48:46Speaker 13: doing on the field.
- 48:47Speaker 5: You know, my guy. I think he's doing okay. Thanks
- 48:50Speaker 5: for the call, Brandon. I just hung up on you.
- 48:54Speaker 5: I think he's doing okay.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:56Speaker 3: I mean, he's out there.
- 48:57Speaker 5: I mean, it's just his catch production isn't up there,
- 48:59Speaker 5: but he's doing what he needs to do.
- 49:02Speaker 4: He catches a lot of his targets. He's not getting
- 49:04Speaker 4: targeted a ton, but he's caught a lot of them.
- 49:06Speaker 4: I thought the catch that you talked about earlier, Fred,
- 49:09Speaker 4: was a really nice catch to adjust to the back
- 49:11Speaker 4: shoulder throw and missed one in the end zone that
- 49:14Speaker 4: he probably could have caught, that he probably would want back.
- 49:17Speaker 3: The blocking has been a little streaky.
- 49:18Speaker 4: Like there's been some good ones, some bad ones, maybe
- 49:21Speaker 4: a little bit better than I expected as a run blocker.
- 49:24Speaker 4: But I think that there's still a little bit of
- 49:27Speaker 4: boomer bust there with the run blocking, but he's done
- 49:30Speaker 4: enough to me, like similarly to Ackes where like these
- 49:32Speaker 4: flashes that you have, these isolated flashes are enough to
- 49:35Speaker 4: get excited about it.
- 49:36Speaker 3: Six games in, I mean, third round pick, like you'll take,
- 49:39Speaker 3: I'll take it.
- 49:40Speaker 5: Sean's in Vancouver. Hey, Sean.
- 49:43Speaker 12: Hey, Fred and Paul, I agree with you about the
- 49:47Speaker 12: special teams coverage. That was excellent. That Latu had got
- 49:51Speaker 12: me out of my recliner. And Paul, you're saying earlier
- 49:54Speaker 12: in regards to addressing the depth with the 10 new players,
- 49:58Speaker 12: we saw like four of them on that clock killing
- 50:02Speaker 12: drive altogether, like Latu coming in as the third tight end.
- 50:06Speaker 12: And then those two.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Guards, Rouse, prior.
- 50:11Speaker 12: They were excellent as backup and Corey Kleiner just, I
- 50:14Speaker 12: don't think we've seen that all season where they're lining
- 50:18Speaker 12: up to run the ball and the other team can't
- 50:20Speaker 12: stop them. They know what's coming, which was excellent. So
- 50:23Speaker 12: I'm wondering the Bears, they're not great against the run.
- 50:26Speaker 12: Are we going to see more Corey Kleiner runs? Is
- 50:28Speaker 12: he going to get more carry. So I'll leave you
- 50:30Speaker 12: with that.
- 50:31Speaker 5: Oh, good.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Good.
- 50:32Speaker 5: Um, trivia on Henderson. What was his status yesterday?
- 50:35Speaker 4: Full, but I think you will see more of kinder
- 50:38Speaker 4: because of Henderson's ankle in the short week. So, uh,
- 50:41Speaker 4: I think that that, you know, he said, very well
- 50:43Speaker 4: said that they rode the hot hand, but I think
- 50:45Speaker 4: some of it might've had to have been doing about
- 50:47Speaker 4: how Henderson was feeling and kinder was running well. So
- 50:49Speaker 4: it was like a combination of those.
- 50:51Speaker 7: Do you think it's possible that the kick returns sort
- 50:56Speaker 7: of said, you know, he's running hard today.
- 50:58Speaker 9: Hmm.
- 50:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 51:00Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 51:01Speaker 8: He mentioned that, too.
- 51:01Speaker 4: He said he had a few good kickoff returns, and
- 51:04Speaker 4: so they wanted to give him a chance. Henderson obviously fumbled, too,
- 51:07Speaker 4: so there was some things, and that's exactly what Vrabel said.
- 51:13Speaker 7: But I'm just wondering, like, the hot hand. When did
- 51:16Speaker 7: you know it was hot? Like, how did you get
- 51:18Speaker 7: it hot? Because it didn't really get hot until the
- 51:20Speaker 7: last drive happened.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 51:22Speaker 8: Do you know what I mean? It was like eight
- 51:25Speaker 8: in a row.
- 51:25Speaker 7: That's why I think the kick return sort of showed him, like, okay, Hey, let's,
- 51:30Speaker 7: let's try this. Let's see what, and you know, I
- 51:34Speaker 7: just think it was one of those, one of those
- 51:35Speaker 7: things that just kind of worked out. I, you know,
- 51:37Speaker 7: I don't necessarily think it's going to lead to, Oh,
- 51:40Speaker 7: all of a sudden he's going to get 20 carries
- 51:42Speaker 7: the next game.
- 51:43Speaker 8: Um, you know, provided that everybody's healthy.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Just nice to know.
- 51:47Speaker 7: You got some health, health being equal.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:50Speaker 8: He's good in tight spaces.
- 51:52Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 51:52Speaker 4: You know, he's good at making himself small and getting
- 51:54Speaker 4: through the holes and, He has a little bit of
- 51:57Speaker 4: lateral wiggle so that he can kind of jump gaps
- 52:00Speaker 4: and things like that. He's got a cool running style.
- 52:04Speaker 4: I mean, he's not the biggest guy, but I think
- 52:06Speaker 4: that he has good vision, hits the hole hard. You
- 52:12Speaker 4: say it all the time, Paul, when you're a third
- 52:13Speaker 4: running back, that's what you want to do. Just get
- 52:16Speaker 4: downhill and get the yards that are there.
- 52:19Speaker 5: Williams in Montreal.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Hey, Williams.
- 52:24Speaker 5: William.
- 52:24Speaker 3: Hey, guys.
- 52:25Speaker 13: Yes.
- 52:27Speaker 15: I'm just calling for two quick points. The first one,
- 52:31Speaker 15: what do you guys think on shutting Morgan Moses down
- 52:34Speaker 15: for the year and letting Caleb Lomu play?
- 52:38Speaker 5: I wouldn't shut him down for the year, but I
- 52:40Speaker 5: might have him back up Lomu, you know, until he's
- 52:44Speaker 5: fully healthy.
- 52:46Speaker 15: And then my second point is I don't want to
- 52:49Speaker 15: take a shot at Paul's guide, but how about like
- 52:52Speaker 15: test Marcus Jones for the spot corner? I'm only watching
- 52:56Speaker 15: it on TV, so I can't really like watch every
- 53:00Speaker 15: single play for Marcus Jones, but I find that he gets.
- 53:02Speaker 6: Beat a lot in coverage.
- 53:03Speaker 15: So like maybe like someone like Zildor or Franti when
- 53:07Speaker 15: he comes back to give him a push for the job.
- 53:10Speaker 5: Paul's going to get mad.
- 53:11Speaker 3: Which play specifically do you see him getting beat in coverage?
- 53:16Speaker 15: I wouldn't say anything in the last game, but I
- 53:18Speaker 15: would like kind of like an obvious one. And I
- 53:21Speaker 15: know it's not the best one to point out. It's
- 53:24Speaker 15: the one against like Brock Bowers.
- 53:27Speaker 5: Who doesn't get beat by Brock Bowers?
- 53:29Speaker 8: Ironically enough, Buffalo. Everybody else beat them.
- 53:33Speaker 5: Well, it was.
- 53:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that one's more on that was they
- 53:37Speaker 4: were shorthanded at corner and. I don't think that was
- 53:39Speaker 4: the matchup that they wanted, ideally, going into that game.
- 53:43Speaker 5: Yeah, we cannot judge Marcus Jones' coverage skills on Brock Bowers.
- 53:47Speaker 7: Yeah, and it might be like an individual kind of thing, William. Thanks, William.
- 53:51Speaker 7: If you wanted maybe Vildo is a little bigger for
- 53:54Speaker 7: something like that, maybe the next time they face a
- 53:57Speaker 7: team that's sort of limited at a receiver, but they
- 54:00Speaker 7: have a big guy like Brock Bowers, maybe you might
- 54:02Speaker 7: want to say, I wonder if we could maybe switch
- 54:05Speaker 7: this up a little bit And not for more size,
- 54:07Speaker 7: but Marcus Jones is one of your best defensive players.
- 54:10Speaker 7: And it's not just because I like him. I mean,
- 54:12Speaker 7: just his physicality, the way he plays.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Smart.
- 54:17Speaker 8: He does get beat in coverage a little bit. He's
- 54:19Speaker 8: not the best cover.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Who does it?
- 54:20Speaker 5: It's the NFL.
- 54:20Speaker 4: But he's so competitive. He makes you earn everything. I
- 54:23Speaker 4: think he gets beat at the catch point because of
- 54:25Speaker 4: his height. He's so competitive. You can't coach that. When
- 54:29Speaker 4: he has good matchups, I don't see him getting beat.
- 54:32Speaker 4: When he's covering Omar Cooper Jr. on Sunday, I thought
- 54:35Speaker 4: that's the type of matchup. The speed slots are the
- 54:38Speaker 4: guys that he should be going up against. Asking him
- 54:41Speaker 4: to cover a 6'6 tight end is not his fault.
- 54:44Speaker 5: Speaking of Marcus Jones, Marcus Jones on offense, is that
- 54:48Speaker 5: something we'll never see again?
- 54:51Speaker 3: I think we've evolved past that.
- 54:53Speaker 5: You think we're past that?
- 54:54Speaker 7: I hope.
- 54:55Speaker 3: Got some explosive offensive players to work with.
- 54:59Speaker 5: Too much.
- 55:00Speaker 7: Looking ahead to Thursday night, do you have Luther Burden
- 55:02Speaker 7: for Marcus Jones or Kalief Raymond? Luther Burden?
- 55:06Speaker 4: Well, Luther Burden really only plays in three receiver sets.
- 55:12Speaker 4: It depends what they're going to play in. I think
- 55:14Speaker 4: that's one of the biggest chess matches of this game
- 55:17Speaker 4: is the Bears play so much two tight end. They're
- 55:20Speaker 4: second in the league in how often they have two
- 55:22Speaker 4: or more tight ends on the field. They'll play 12.
- 55:24Speaker 4: They'll play 13 personnel. So how do the Patriots want
- 55:27Speaker 4: to match their big personnel groupings. I assume no Carlton
- 55:31Speaker 4: Davis in this game. Uh, so it's probably going to
- 55:34Speaker 4: be Gonzalez Jones and woods is the corners, but like,
- 55:37Speaker 4: is this a big Jalen Reed game? This is a
- 55:39Speaker 4: big base defense game. Like if you come out in
- 55:42Speaker 4: three corner nickel again, Chicago with the tight ends, I
- 55:45Speaker 4: don't think that that's going to go so well. So
- 55:47Speaker 4: like they have to figure out a way to, to
- 55:50Speaker 4: figure that out. You know, they've been playing some of
- 55:52Speaker 4: the three safety nickel, um, which I like, I think
- 55:54Speaker 4: it's a good change up to their regular nickel packages. Um,
- 55:58Speaker 4: So maybe it's that. Maybe it's a little bit more
- 56:01Speaker 4: of Jalen Reed in a game like this. But those
- 56:05Speaker 4: two guys, Raymond and Bird, aren't on the field together
- 56:08Speaker 4: a ton because of just the way that they build
- 56:10Speaker 4: out their packages.
- 56:12Speaker 5: All right. Let's go. Uh-oh. Christian in L.A.
- 56:16Speaker 9: Hey.
- 56:18Speaker 16: Good morning, good morning, good morning.
- 56:20Speaker 5: How you guys doing? Good. Who should be benched this week? Well.
- 56:25Speaker 16: You know, I am honestly asking you guys, did you
- 56:29Speaker 16: see what you needed to see from the team to
- 56:31Speaker 16: be convinced that we turned the corner or got over
- 56:35Speaker 16: the hump? I was looking for something that seemed like,
- 56:39Speaker 16: you know, the play calling had caught up to what
- 56:41Speaker 16: Drake liked or identified what Drake's doing and reading well.
- 56:45Speaker 16: The defense I was looking for, some sort of, but
- 56:49Speaker 16: not a complete shutdown. But I definitely didn't want to
- 56:51Speaker 16: struggle and be in a one-point game against the Jets.
- 56:54Speaker 16: So moving forward, I do think that we have the
- 56:58Speaker 16: tools to neutralize what Chicago does best. But again, I'm
- 57:03Speaker 16: looking for this game in Thursday. And I know it's
- 57:05Speaker 16: on a short week, but I'm looking for this game
- 57:07Speaker 16: to show me that we've gotten over the hump. And
- 57:10Speaker 16: I haven't seen it yet.
- 57:11Speaker 13: I'll take it off the air.
- 57:12Speaker 5: Okay. We haven't gotten over the hump.
- 57:15Speaker 8: I don't know what the hump is.
- 57:16Speaker 5: Yeah. Is he talking specifically Drake May? Is he talking about?
- 57:20Speaker 3: I'm not looking at this game as like some huge
- 57:22Speaker 3: referendum on where they're at of the season. It's like
- 57:24Speaker 3: this game to me is survive a Thursday night game.
- 57:27Speaker 3: Try to get in there and steal it from the Bears.
- 57:29Speaker 5: It's a hard game for any team to be judged
- 57:33Speaker 5: by Thursday night on the road.
- 57:34Speaker 8: But, I mean, just the whole premise. Like, were we
- 57:39Speaker 8: supposed to be peaking in week six?
- 57:41Speaker 7: Is that the goal? Because they only beat the Jets
- 57:43Speaker 7: by one score, so they're not where they should be.
- 57:49Speaker 8: I don't tell people how to feel.
- 57:50Speaker 7: I thought this was a better win than a lot
- 57:53Speaker 7: of other people did.
- 57:55Speaker 5: I'm with you, Paul.
- 57:56Speaker 4: I think the details weren't as sharp in this game.
- 57:58Speaker 4: They weren't.
- 58:00Speaker 8: We haven't really talked a ton about A.J.
- 58:01Speaker 7: Brown.
- 58:02Speaker 8: That whole situation, I think, is putting a damper on
- 58:05Speaker 8: things for people. The injuries.
- 58:07Speaker 4: The fact that they did have some detail-oriented things, fumbles,
- 58:11Speaker 4: coverage busts, things of that nature are things that tend
- 58:16Speaker 4: to irritate people.
- 58:17Speaker 8: But why do we ignore when the other teams do that?
- 58:20Speaker 7: We don't. Because that's kind of the way football goes.
- 58:24Speaker 7: This is my whole point about you find out stuff
- 58:29Speaker 7: because it's hard and you get hit back. The Raiders
- 58:33Speaker 7: laid down and did nothing. You know, once the game
- 58:36Speaker 7: had declared late in the first half and it's 21-7,
- 58:39Speaker 7: they went in the locker room down 14 points and
- 58:41Speaker 7: decided that was the end of the game.
- 58:43Speaker 8: The Jets didn't.
- 58:44Speaker 7: They came back out for the second half down 21
- 58:47Speaker 7: and said, we're still here. And they forced the Patriots
- 58:50Speaker 7: to play in the second half.
- 58:52Speaker 8: And I agree.
- 58:53Speaker 7: The Patriots didn't look as good in this game as
- 58:55Speaker 7: they did against the Raiders. But I think the Jets
- 58:57Speaker 7: had something to do with that. It's a high bar.
- 58:59Speaker 8: It's a high bar when you're a good team that
- 59:01Speaker 8: just went to the Super Bowl.
- 59:02Speaker 7: Well, that's what my whole thing, like, did they get
- 59:05Speaker 7: over the hump?
- 59:06Speaker 5: Like, of what?
- 59:06Speaker 7: Like, of being a good team? Being a playoff caliber team?
- 59:09Speaker 7: I I think that they've been that.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 59:11Speaker 7: The whole year they went to the Superbowl last year.
- 59:13Speaker 7: I think most people feel like this is a playoff
- 59:15Speaker 7: team coming back this year.
- 59:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 59:17Speaker 7: I haven't seen anything to indicate that they shouldn't be
- 59:19Speaker 7: in the playoffs. It's also the angle of like, taking
- 59:21Speaker 7: care of business when you don't have your best game.
- 59:23Speaker 7: And that's something I think good teams do as well,
- 59:25Speaker 7: that they're able to win even when it isn't all perfect.
- 59:28Speaker 7: That'd be my biggest thing.
- 59:29Speaker 4: Like not every game is going to be a Picasso.
- 59:31Speaker 4: It's not all going to be perfect. It's not going
- 59:33Speaker 4: to be a fine piece of art. Like the Raiders
- 59:36Speaker 4: game was every single week. Like you're not going to
- 59:38Speaker 4: always have your a game and their C plus game.
- 59:41Speaker 4: If that was even, that was more than enough to
- 59:44Speaker 4: win this game. Like I know it was a one
- 59:45Speaker 4: score game. They got a field goal drive at the
- 59:47Speaker 4: end of the fourth quarter. Like it, To me, that
- 59:51Speaker 4: was the biggest thing. Not every game is going to
- 59:54Speaker 4: be perfect. I just look at the game itself. It
- 59:58Speaker 4: was what it was. And I know that sometimes I
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: can take it to ridiculous levels. I thought the Jets
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: were very competitive for 60 minutes in this game. But
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: I never, even for one second, thought the Patriots were
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: going to lose. And that doesn't always happen. Sometimes when
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: the games unfold and you're like, you know, the Buffalo game,
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: I don't know, it was kind of back and forth.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: It was Mike, Mike do so his rollercoaster game. Like,
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: I didn't know how that game was going to end,
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: but this game, I know that there was only a
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: touchdown lead. And at times it was less than that.
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: It was only four points for, for a good chunk
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: of the second. I just never felt.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: That the Patriots were going to lose. Fred was a
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: little frustrated, though, didn't you? Well, I mean, that happens
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: to Fred sometimes. He was getting a little worked up
- 1:00:43Speaker 8: during the game.
- 1:00:43Speaker 7: Run plays that result in three-yard gains sometimes excite him.
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: And then other times he just decides, you know, I
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: don't know, what are we even doing out here today?
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: No, listen.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: You said that you just lose.
- 1:00:52Speaker 7: You had some frustration.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: I did. Listen, when Pop Douglas fumbled, I think I wrote,
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: this is the kind of thing that loses you the game.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: In a game like that, you know, you can't afford it.
- 1:01:05Speaker 17: Oh, man.
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: You were in a bad place for a little while there.
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: We had to have a little intervention with you.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: I wanted to beat you. Unlike you, Paul, I wanted
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: a blowout. This is not a blowout! I don't want
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: a close game.
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: It just amazes me that the guy who said just
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: lose is making fun of the guy who wants this
- 1:01:26Speaker 7: team to actually compete.
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: Can't blow him out.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: Forget it.
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: I wasn't looking for a seven-point game. I tell you
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: that much.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: It's funny, though, because I feel like just in predictions,
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: I think we all kind of were like, I think
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: the Patriots are going to win, but it's going to
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: be a little close, and I've got to pull away
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: at the end.
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: Yeah, that's what I thought. The only thing that didn't
- 1:01:45Speaker 7: happen is the pull away at the end part.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: No, I thought that it was going to, like, I
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: think I picked 27-14. I was 27-13.
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: I had 33-16.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: It was kind.
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: Of that kind.
- 1:01:56Speaker 7: Of game.
- 1:01:57Speaker 8: We all thought it was going to kind of be competitive, though.
- 1:02:00Speaker 8: None of us thought it was going to be the
- 1:02:01Speaker 8: Raider game.
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: What was the word of the week? Frisky.
- 1:02:05Speaker 8: Everybody called the Jets frisky.
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: Then the Jets come out and play a frisky game,
- 1:02:08Speaker 7: and everybody's like, what's wrong with the Patriots? That's what
- 1:02:12Speaker 7: I would push back on a little bit. I don't
- 1:02:14Speaker 7: think the Patriots were that bad. They did everything that
- 1:02:16Speaker 7: Evan said. They were a little sloppy. They had some
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: missed assignments, some physical plays, some mental plays.
- 1:02:23Speaker 8: Obviously, A.J. Brown, you don't expect to drop passes.
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: A frisky team, if that's how you're being categorized, when
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: you're the underdog, You rely on the superior team to
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: make some mistakes.
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: Now, you also have to play well, and the Jets
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: didn't do it. The Jets did as many stupid things
- 1:02:40Speaker 7: as the Patriots did.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: But they were frisky.
- 1:02:42Speaker 8: They were frisky.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: That's why they're frisky, because they don't play.
- 1:02:45Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:02:46Speaker 8: That's their normal play.
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: I agree with you. And that was, to me, the
- 1:02:50Speaker 7: difference between the Jets game and the Raiders game. is
- 1:02:52Speaker 7: the Jets continued to be frisky. It was the Raiders
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: were like, ah, we took a shot. It was 14-7
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: for a while.
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: Now we're done.
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: I give the Raiders a lot of credit for bouncing
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: back the next week. They didn't take the shellacking the
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: Patriots gave them, and it didn't carry into the next week.
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: I know they lost, but they played well. They played
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: a lot better.
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: Yeah, it was a similar kind of game to what
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: they've been playing, except for the Patriots game.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:14Speaker 8: Like, they're just not good enough.
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: Deep past Trey Tucker, too.
- 1:03:18Speaker 7: A little window dressing at the end. But they were
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: tied in the fourth quarter. It was 23-13. They tied
- 1:03:22Speaker 7: it 23-23. And then Allen just did Allen things, which,
- 1:03:28Speaker 7: by the way, ridiculously dumb play.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: Ridiculously dumb.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Ridiculous.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: Yeah, underhand flip.
- 1:03:34Speaker 8: It's really cool, I know, and everybody clipped it and
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: everybody put it on their socials.
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: At least he was looking that way this time and
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: not throwing it over his shoulder.
- 1:03:42Speaker 8: I don't care where you're looking.
- 1:03:43Speaker 7: To throw the ball 15 yards like this, you don't
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: know where it's going. I don't care that you saw him.
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: That just as easily could have gone straight up in
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: the air and been like a punt.
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: I don't know. Josh Allen, though, he can do that.
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: I have a lot of respect for the guy, but
- 1:03:56Speaker 7: that's dumb.
- 1:03:57Speaker 8: That's why he's stuck.
- 1:04:03Speaker 7: There's something, that team. I mean, I just think it's
- 1:04:05Speaker 7: amazing when you basically have to score 30 points to win.
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: That's 4-0. Not while scoring 30 points, Mike, while allowing
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: 30 points. Four and O, allowing 30 points this year.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: Their defense was supposed to be significantly better.
- 1:04:22Speaker 8: New coaching staff, new scheme.
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: Well, eventually. But don't look it.
- 1:04:27Speaker 8: I mean, it looks worse.
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: Yeah, it does look worse.
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: We should also mention some other news around the league.
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: Jalen Hurts with the blood clot. I made that Eagles
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: pick before I knew he was out, so I should
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: get a mulligan for that one. Also, I picked the
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: Colts before the season to really do well this year,
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: and they just fired their GM because they ain't doing well.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: A lot of drama for our joint practice partners from
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: the Sun. My girl is not happy. She's not happy.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: That's some of the other thing going out in That
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: animal that CJ Gardner got.
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: Johnson.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: Spitting at people.
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: Be careful.
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: Yeah, he's terrible.
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: I said at the end of the post-game show, and
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: to me it's another lost opportunity for your new head coach,
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: Joe Brady, who evidently is going to stick with him.
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: I thought that was a great opportunity for him to
- 1:05:27Speaker 7: assert control of the organization.
- 1:05:29Speaker 8: We can't have that.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: No.
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: Cut him.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: It's not like he's Ronnie Lott and he lost his mind.
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: It's the old adage, when your talent outweighs your attitude.
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: It doesn't in this case. He's just a run-of-the-mill player
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: who's been on a million teams. I would have cut him.
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: I would have cut him before we even landed back
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: home in Buffalo. That Bills team right now feels a little.
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: Joe Brady's a great play designer, and he's a great
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: offensive coordinator. I just don't... We're not at head coach...
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: level yet in terms of the ceo stuff yeah with
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: that whole operation and uh i think that like even
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: though he's an offensive-minded head coach and he's the play
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: caller like you're the head coach now like the defense
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: being a mess is on your purview like that's.
- 1:06:16Speaker 7: That's under his yeah that's under your.
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: Umbrella i understand that you absolutely and aren't that guy
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: like you're not that's not your side of the ball
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: but like still like it's your job to quality control
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: that side of the ball and make sure the.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: Game plan makes sense and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: And so right now he's a fantastic offensive coordinator, but
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: I just don't know if he's taken.
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: Now I will give them some credit Buffalo. Not that
- 1:06:40Speaker 7: I'm just beating up on them. You know, it's easy
- 1:06:43Speaker 7: to look and they say, well, she said the Patriots
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: just steamrolled that team. Well, first of all, it was
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: on the road. They were out there for two weeks.
- 1:06:50Speaker 7: They went, they played the Rams. They stayed, They stayed over.
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: Then they played the Raiders. That's not an easy thing
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: to do.
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: That's not easy.
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: It's not an easy thing to do, even though they should.
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: I mean, they I thought they had control of the
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: Raiders game up 10. They had one possession where they
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: didn't score. And all of a sudden they're in a
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: tie game. Then they kind of reestablish dominance with a
- 1:07:11Speaker 7: touchdown drive, followed by a three and out and then
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: a field goal drive to get back up by 10
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: and then. they let up a bomb with a minute left,
- 1:07:20Speaker 7: which is inexcusable. Like much like, you know, we're talking
- 1:07:23Speaker 7: about Mike Rabel, I'm sure is not happy with how
- 1:07:25Speaker 7: easily the Jets went down the field to get that
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: late field goal to make it a one score game.
- 1:07:29Speaker 7: That was too easy.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: Same thing. You know, you can't let Trey Tucker get
- 1:07:33Speaker 7: over the top like that. And just, but I do
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: say like, Mitigating circumstances. Two weeks in a row on
- 1:07:40Speaker 7: the West Coast staying out there.
- 1:07:42Speaker 8: Now they get the bye. But Evan's right.
- 1:07:44Speaker 7: If they can't figure out how to at least slow
- 1:07:46Speaker 7: somebody down, you can't win 34-31 every game.
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: That'll be their kryptonite.
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: So far they have, but... All right.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: Time for a break. I'm hungry. When we come back,

- 1:09:59Speaker 1: What do you got, Karen?
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: Well, with a couple of guards injured, I was wondering.
- 1:10:09Speaker 9: If you know anything about their status and if you
- 1:10:10Speaker 9: might have to go outside and bring in some new bodies?
- 1:10:15Speaker 10: I think we'll add Andrew Ruptich and Rizzy from guys
- 1:10:19Speaker 10: that have been here previously to help us.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Here as we move forward.
- 1:10:29Speaker 10: I would say that we'd have to stay pretty fluid
- 1:10:32Speaker 10: and proud of the way that the guys that were
- 1:10:35Speaker 10: in there finished the game. critical drive and one that
- 1:10:40Speaker 10: they showed up in good fashion and we were able
- 1:10:43Speaker 10: to run the football and take the time down and
- 1:10:47Speaker 10: the clock down and end the drive with some points.
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: What was the last scenario.
- 1:10:54Speaker 17: Where we talked to a couple of the linemen and
- 1:10:57Speaker 17: were like, I've never been down to the HKI and
- 1:10:59Speaker 17: having to play meaningful snaps, in other words, not clearing
- 1:11:03Speaker 17: out the bench. What if there had to have been
- 1:11:05Speaker 17: a ninth guy? What's the break last in case of
- 1:11:09Speaker 17: emergency play?
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: We'll hold that one for a later date.
- 1:11:13Speaker 10: There was a scenario or there was a conversation about it.
- 1:11:17Speaker 10: I'd hate to tell you what it was.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: Mike, we asked you about your depth during the preseason.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: You were pretty open. You weren't sure about it.
- 1:11:30Speaker 12: I think maybe after the Eagles game, preseason game.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: You said you weren't a very deep team.
- 1:11:36Speaker 12: How do you feel about your depth now?
- 1:11:38Speaker 10: You guys ask me this question every day. I answer
- 1:11:40Speaker 10: it the same way.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: I haven't asked that question. I know, but I include you.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: You're not any more special than the rest of these guys.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Everybody prepares as a starter.
- 1:11:51Speaker 10: I can't wait to watch those guys that prepare all
- 1:11:58Speaker 10: week without knowing whether they're going to get an opportunity
- 1:12:00Speaker 10: to play. Then when they do, take advantage of it,
- 1:12:05Speaker 10: and that's a testament.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: To them, to those players. Reference the players.
- 1:12:11Speaker 10: That we signed, they're added to our roster at the
- 1:12:14Speaker 10: end of training camp, which was a unique number, I think,
- 1:12:18Speaker 10: for me. Again, those players got ready to go. They prepared,
- 1:12:22Speaker 10: whether they were on the active roster or whether they
- 1:12:25Speaker 10: were on the practice squad. They Learn the system, learn
- 1:12:31Speaker 10: what we want to do, whether it's special teams, whether
- 1:12:33Speaker 10: that's offense or defense, and then they've been able to
- 1:12:38Speaker 10: help us. That's what we have to continue to do,
- 1:12:42Speaker 10: and then as that gets depleted, then it's the next wave.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Of players that come in to be ready to go
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: on game day.
- 1:12:50Speaker 7: You guys yesterday described the injury situation as insane.
- 1:12:53Speaker 13: Have you guys noticed any commonalities or trends with the
- 1:12:56Speaker 13: injuries or anything that you guys could do different moving forward?
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: Nope.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: It's just kind of how it goes.
- 1:13:04Speaker 19: Football teams at any level talk about next man up mentality,
- 1:13:08Speaker 19: but you can't just snap your fingers and have it work.
- 1:13:11Speaker 19: You guys have had it work very well. Can you
- 1:13:13Speaker 19: put your finger on anything you've learned over time or
- 1:13:15Speaker 19: that you guys do differently here as a result of
- 1:13:18Speaker 19: things that you've worked on?
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Try to coach everybody the same. Try to coach them.
- 1:13:23Speaker 10: We hold the best players accountable, but we also coach
- 1:13:25Speaker 10: every single player that shows up ready to work, ready
- 1:13:29Speaker 10: to find a way to help.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: The football team. We've been through this.
- 1:13:32Speaker 10: We played 91 guys in whatever, 2000 and 21, so
- 1:13:35Speaker 10: it's not like we're not used to understanding that things
- 1:13:39Speaker 10: are going to happen along the way.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: I think the players start to recognize that. They see that.
- 1:13:46Speaker 10: They try to find a role, earn a role, figure
- 1:13:49Speaker 10: out what they can do how many different positions other
- 1:13:52Speaker 10: guys can play, whether that's tackle and guard, safety, nickel,
- 1:13:58Speaker 10: you know, linebacker, gunner. Like, we really are just trying
- 1:14:01Speaker 10: to find ways to help the team.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: And then guys have embraced that.
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: With the offensive line group, can you just speak to
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: the job Doug Marone has done with those guys and
- 1:14:11Speaker 7: having them ready to go each week?
- 1:14:12Speaker 10: Yeah, and I think all three of those guys, Dougie
- 1:14:14Speaker 10: and Haas and J.D., they just, you know, are able
- 1:14:20Speaker 10: to get guys ready to go, get them the reps
- 1:14:24Speaker 10: that they think they need, whether.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: That's walk-through reps or.
- 1:14:28Speaker 10: Getting Walter ready, getting Matt ready, being able to get
- 1:14:34Speaker 10: Caleb ready on both sides to beat a swing tackle,
- 1:14:37Speaker 10: play left one week, play right. Those are all real positive,
- 1:14:41Speaker 10: and we'll need their best efforts this week as we
- 1:14:44Speaker 10: move forward.
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: Mike, you talk a lot about sense of urgency. What's
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: the sense of urgency in a week like this Is
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: it mental and then just making sure that your body
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: gets what it needs treatment-wise and everything else?
- 1:14:54Speaker 10: I think that's probably something that we've always talked about
- 1:14:57Speaker 10: is trying to be, you know, win the mental prep
- 1:15:00Speaker 10: and the physical recovery. You know, there's only so much
- 1:15:03Speaker 10: that you can do physically here over the next couple days,
- 1:15:07Speaker 10: and it's got to be done mentally, but also the
- 1:15:09Speaker 10: physical recovery that you have to put in and know
- 1:15:11Speaker 10: by Thursday night you'll feel good.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: What impresses you the most about this Thursday? Physical.
- 1:15:20Speaker 10: You know, it's a physical football team. Defensively, they're connected.
- 1:15:26Speaker 10: They play really well as a unit, whether that's the
- 1:15:30Speaker 10: pressure that they are able to create and the moving
- 1:15:34Speaker 10: parts and the coverage concepts that they have to go
- 1:15:36Speaker 10: with it. You know, Dennis has always done a great job.
- 1:15:39Speaker 10: Players understand it. They play fast. You know, they get
- 1:15:43Speaker 10: off the field. You know, offensively, they extend drives. They
- 1:15:47Speaker 10: run the football, you know, I've been without Caleb for
- 1:15:52Speaker 10: a couple weeks, but certainly you can see the impact
- 1:15:54Speaker 10: that he makes. The runners, anybody that touches the ball
- 1:15:58Speaker 10: is going to be a physical player. It's going to
- 1:16:00Speaker 10: be a tough tackle. We'll have to be great tacklers
- 1:16:03Speaker 10: and do something to try to change the fact that
- 1:16:07Speaker 10: their offense is out there for 73 snaps and their
- 1:16:10Speaker 10: defense is out there for 50.
- 1:16:11Speaker 17: How have you seen Caleb Lowe move and grow and
- 1:16:13Speaker 17: improve since the season began?
- 1:16:18Speaker 10: Trying to get ready each and every week. A lot
- 1:16:23Speaker 10: of new things for him. It's a new league for him.
- 1:16:25Speaker 10: Coming from college, being 21, it's a tough position.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: To be able to go out there and play. I
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: think he's gotten better.
- 1:16:34Speaker 10: I think that's the goal is to continue to invest
- 1:16:37Speaker 10: in the young guys and coach them and know that
- 1:16:40Speaker 10: that's going to pay dividends down the road.
- 1:16:43Speaker 7: When it comes to Milton Williams, Um, he said yesterday that.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: You probably liked that. So it was pretty funny.
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: I got to admit, um, you know, you talk some
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: snack on the sidelines and stuff like that.
- 1:16:55Speaker 10: I'm just curious, uh, how you see him respond to
- 1:16:58Speaker 10: that and what it was like to see him.
- 1:16:59Speaker 6: Get his first.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: I mean, I talk, I say that all the time,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: not just on the sidelines.
- 1:17:02Speaker 10: I mean, I, this is part of coming to work
- 1:17:04Speaker 10: and trying to have a connection with these guys.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: And I appreciate what mill does.
- 1:17:09Speaker 10: I think that his leadership and his efforts and his impacts, um,
- 1:17:14Speaker 10: And I know that every player wants great stats, but
- 1:17:17Speaker 10: to be able to be disruptive and to play hard
- 1:17:21Speaker 10: and do some of those things that he does and
- 1:17:23Speaker 10: has continued to do in the last three weeks have
- 1:17:25Speaker 10: really helped us defensively. But, yeah, I mean, I hope
- 1:17:31Speaker 10: that they give it back to me, which they do,
- 1:17:33Speaker 10: or they give it to me, and it's back and forth.
- 1:17:38Speaker 10: But I think that's just part of spending a lot
- 1:17:40Speaker 10: of time with each other and getting to know each other.
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: To give it back to you?
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: No. I mean, I'm fine with it. Trust me.
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: This morning you called the turnovers embarrassing. Is there anything
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: you can do differently in coaching or is it just
- 1:17:55Speaker 7: a matter of guys taking on us and holding on
- 1:17:57Speaker 7: to the ball?
- 1:17:58Speaker 10: We'll rep it more. We'll put more time into it,
- 1:18:02Speaker 10: I guess. I don't know how you can put any
- 1:18:03Speaker 10: more time into the amount of ball security drills we do.
- 1:18:09Speaker 10: Take a bigger onus of protecting a guy with the ball.
- 1:18:13Speaker 10: Somebody you know, beats me across my face and hammers
- 1:18:18Speaker 10: the ball out that, you know, to share half the fumble.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: So, but yep, I'm, I'm certainly cognizant. Yeah. You can
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: put it on me. That's probably the easy.
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: It's legal.
- 1:18:29Speaker 8: Seafood's fresh take of the week.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: And it, and it, mmm, yummy.
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: Legal. Seafood's is giving fans a true taste of Boston.
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: This season as the official seafood restaurant of the new
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: England Patriots Pre-game or post-game, get the seafood you love
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: at your local restaurant today. LegalSeafoods.com. Paul, what's your fresh
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: take of the day?
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: I'm going to push back a little bit on this
- 1:18:55Speaker 7: whole notion that suddenly the Patriots' schedule is easy again,
- 1:19:00Speaker 7: like it was last year. People are looking at teams
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: like the Chargers and saying, well, everybody thought that was
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: going to be a tough game, and obviously that doesn't
- 1:19:08Speaker 7: look like a tough game, but I've seen people penciling
- 1:19:12Speaker 7: in wins for these NFC North games, and I think
- 1:19:16Speaker 7: the NFC North division specifically is a bear. No pun
- 1:19:20Speaker 7: intended with the upcoming opponent.
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: Tough teams.
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: I've seen people penciling wins over Chicago and Green Bay, and.
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: I just don't know how you do it.
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:19:30Speaker 8: Green Bay is getting much better.
- 1:19:32Speaker 7: That team is going to be a better team in
- 1:19:34Speaker 7: a month and a half than it was two weeks ago.
- 1:19:38Speaker 7: Their defense is pretty solid. Evan's been bringing up the
- 1:19:41Speaker 7: point about Micah Parsons being back. I think Jordan Love
- 1:19:44Speaker 7: is starting to figure it out. Oh, by the way,
- 1:19:46Speaker 7: Josh Jacobs has now been removed from the commissioner's exempt list.
- 1:19:49Speaker 7: That will not be an easy game. Minnesota, with all
- 1:19:52Speaker 7: the stuff that they do, will not be an easy game.
- 1:19:54Speaker 7: Thursday night, you're banged up with Chicago. This is going
- 1:19:56Speaker 7: to be a tough schedule. This is not going to
- 1:19:58Speaker 7: be an easy cakewalk.
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: One of your guys last night, Jim Murray, said that
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: the Bears game is a layup. A layup?
- 1:20:04Speaker 7: Come on.
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: Come on.
- 1:20:05Speaker 8: That's because he doesn't like Caleb. He hates Caleb Williams.
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: Well, I mean, you can hate him, but he's still
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: a good quarterback.
- 1:20:11Speaker 8: No, he cried in college. And he paints his nails.
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: I know. Still. Listen, it's not going to be a layup.
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: I can tell you that much.
- 1:20:18Speaker 7: This is going to be a very good win. If
- 1:20:20Speaker 7: the Patriots pull off the win Thursday night and someone wants,
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: I mean, unless Chicago just completely craps themselves and hands
- 1:20:27Speaker 7: you the game. That's going to be a very good win.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:20:30Speaker 8: If they win on Thursday night, I'd be really impressed.
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: That's good. You're a legal seafood. Fresh take of the day.
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: There ain't no easy games this year.
- 1:20:39Speaker 8: They got two against Miami.
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: Those are easy. Oh, come on. And they're going to
- 1:20:42Speaker 7: play a winless Chargers team. That's going to be pretty easy, too.
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: Counterpoint, their future DVOA is the fourth easiest schedule in
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: the league the rest of the way.
- 1:20:51Speaker 8: I know, but I don't think.
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: A lot of that is Miami twice, the Jets again,
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: the Chargers.
- 1:20:55Speaker 8: Like, they have some cupcakes. Mm-hmm.
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: But I'm with you on the NFC North. That is
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: a really good division.
- 1:21:00Speaker 7: But just in general, those numbers don't really tell. I
- 1:21:04Speaker 7: think if you're looking at Green Bay right now, that's
- 1:21:07Speaker 7: an easy game. I don't think that's what you're getting.
- 1:21:09Speaker 7: The last two weeks, they look like a different team.
- 1:21:11Speaker 7: So give them five games like that in a row,
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: and maybe their DVOA is a lot better.
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: When's the best time to judge a schedule?
- 1:21:18Speaker 7: After the season. That's right.
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:21:21Speaker 7: It's a Fred-ism.
- 1:21:22Speaker 8: The AFC does a lot of help for them with those.
- 1:21:25Speaker 7: The two Miami games make that schedule look a lot
- 1:21:28Speaker 7: easier than it is in the Chargers.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: Podcasts at Patriots.com is the email address. Let's get to
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: some of those. Luke and Savannah. Headline, I love you, Paul.
- 1:21:40Speaker 7: What do I do now?
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: Super off-topic question for Fred. I don't know what. But
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: I've always wondered, why do you pronounce the Rams like
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: ROMs when doing picks? Is there some inside joke? Going
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: on there, or old episode reference I missed. I've always
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: been perplexed by that. Well, no, it's a shout out
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: to Bob Sose. Homage. Who calls them the ROMs. He
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: has a tendency to pronounce all his A's as soft A's.
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: We got it yesterday with Kam Latu.
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: Kam Latu and Will... Will Comble.
- 1:22:11Speaker 8: Does he call him Comble?
- 1:22:13Speaker 5: He said it because it was a call during the game.
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: He goes, there's a Patriot down in the field, and
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: it's Will Comble.
- 1:22:19Speaker 8: It's Cam Newton.
- 1:22:22Speaker 7: It's Com Newton.
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: I love Bob.
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: I love Bob.
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: I got to do a show with Bob yesterday.
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: Did you know that?
- 1:22:27Speaker 13: Him and Zoe.
- 1:22:28Speaker 7: He subbed in yesterday on Patriots This Week. Thanks, Brian Hoyer.
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: Also, people need to give Dobbs the same grace and, oh,
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: it's okay, darling. You'll get there. treatment that AJ is
- 1:22:38Speaker 5: getting from fans.
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: Oh, wow.
- 1:22:41Speaker 5: Basically saying people are harder on Dobbs than AJ Brown.
- 1:22:44Speaker 7: They have been. That's accurate.
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: I think AJ Brown kind of got killed coming off
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: this game, and he played bad, so I'm not saying
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: it's wrong.
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: He got the Bronx chair during the game.
- 1:22:54Speaker 8: During the game.
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought that there's been some pretty pointed criticisms
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: about AJ Brown, but granted, I'm in this eco-chamber thing
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: where I hear everything.
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: Don't judge the fans by what you hear on the radio.
- 1:23:06Speaker 7: No, but I would say that for the most part,
- 1:23:11Speaker 7: and I'll put myself in this category, like I've been
- 1:23:13Speaker 7: focusing on the fact that A.J. Brown was able to
- 1:23:16Speaker 7: get open consistently in that game. I don't think they
- 1:23:18Speaker 7: necessarily forced the ball to him. I think he kept
- 1:23:20Speaker 7: dropping it.
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: Like that's like a different story. But the reason why
- 1:23:25Speaker 7: I'm harder on Dobbs. It's because Brown's a better player.
- 1:23:29Speaker 7: I expect him to bounce back. I worried about Dobbs'
- 1:23:31Speaker 7: ability to do that because I don't think he's as good.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:23:34Speaker 7: Yeah. Dobbs had a weird year. Very, very strong.
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: His yards per catch is like 18. But he doesn't
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: have that very many catches. But all of his catches
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: have been big, big plays. Like 63 yards against Pittsburgh.
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: 42-yard touchdown last week against the Jets.
- 1:23:50Speaker 7: What is that stat? Is it like EPA per route
- 1:23:53Speaker 7: run or something like that? Yeah, like yards per route run.
- 1:23:56Speaker 8: He's like in the top 15 in the league. Yeah,
- 1:23:58Speaker 8: because he's catching bombs.
- 1:23:59Speaker 7: Because of that.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:00Speaker 8: Yeah. But I'm with you with A.J.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Brown. I thought.
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: If he had to have a bad game, I'd much
- 1:24:05Speaker 4: rather it look like that than look like he's stuck
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: in the mud and can't run. I thought he had
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: great juice. I thought he looked explosive. I thought he
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: looked healthy. I thought he was getting open. He just
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: couldn't catch the ball.
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: I just couldn't believe the onside kick.
- 1:24:17Speaker 7: That was the other ones I was almost laughing at.
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: Well, at that point, I think it had snowballed on him.
- 1:24:21Speaker 7: So I have a question.
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: I can't believe that one.
- 1:24:23Speaker 7: That was like a minor little topic. People were like,
- 1:24:26Speaker 7: I can't believe after all those drops they had him
- 1:24:28Speaker 7: on the hands team.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:24:29Speaker 7: Now, one part of me would be like, well, A.J.
- 1:24:33Speaker 7: Brown would be a staple on the hands team. But
- 1:24:36Speaker 7: I do wonder if Dobbs was supposed to be there
- 1:24:39Speaker 7: and A.J. Brown was replacing Dobbs just in this particular game.
- 1:24:43Speaker 7: That's an interesting question.
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good question.
- 1:24:46Speaker 8: They also, I didn't. track this live for some reason
- 1:24:50Speaker 8: but he also fumbled yeah.
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: Yeah aj brown on one of the passes yeah i didn't.
- 1:24:55Speaker 20: Know that yeah he fumbled was he credited with the
- 1:24:58Speaker 20: phone they went back and they reviewed it right no
- 1:25:02Speaker 20: they didn't review it he got the ball punched out
- 1:25:04Speaker 20: and it bounced right back up into his chest and
- 1:25:07Speaker 20: he was able to recover it so and it looked
- 1:25:09Speaker 20: so it didn't really you didn't see it.
- 1:25:11Speaker 7: Now I'm with Rabel.
- 1:25:13Speaker 8: But Rabel saw it.
- 1:25:16Speaker 5: No, that's what I'm saying. That added to his frustration.
- 1:25:20Speaker 7: Of course. Because unlike PFF, he counts those as turnover-worthy plays.
- 1:25:25Speaker 7: When the ball gets fumbled, it's a turnover-worthy play.
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: That would have been a turnover-worthy play.
- 1:25:29Speaker 8: Because you can't guarantee that you're going to recover.
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: It literally bounced right back to him.
- 1:25:34Speaker 7: He was lucky.
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: I love those. Let's see. Jeremiah writes in, with the
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: firing of Indy's GM and Washington's awful start to the season,
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: A lot of talk about players being available. A lot
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: of fans want Taylor and Nelson. Quentin Nelson. I'll take him.
- 1:25:48Speaker 7: Oh, yeah. Quentin Nelson could be on the block.
- 1:25:51Speaker 8: That's not far-fetched.
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: Yeah, but both kind of seem like a long shot,
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: especially Taylor. Is there anyone from those teams you could
- 1:25:58Speaker 5: see or would like the Patriots to add?
- 1:26:01Speaker 8: Stephon Diggs.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: No, I'm just kidding.
- 1:26:03Speaker 7: Yeah, I think the Colts are in a different spot.
- 1:26:05Speaker 7: The team that I want to sort of look and
- 1:26:07Speaker 7: parse through the roster is the Eagles. Hmm. Cause I
- 1:26:11Speaker 7: think Howie Roseman is a very good general manager and
- 1:26:14Speaker 7: he'll look at this as an opportunity.
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: And a buddy of Elliot Wolf.
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:26:18Speaker 7: But the Colts, I think they're probably going to look
- 1:26:21Speaker 7: at this and say, you know, we got to get
- 1:26:24Speaker 7: out of our own way and we can put a
- 1:26:27Speaker 7: couple of wins together. Well, you know, Nelson is a
- 1:26:29Speaker 7: guy that I think, I think I read, I think
- 1:26:31Speaker 7: I read our boy Solak today and he, I think
- 1:26:34Speaker 7: he might have a year left. So he could be,
- 1:26:36Speaker 7: you know, I think Jonathan Taylor just signed.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:40Speaker 8: Um, I think Nelson could be available.
- 1:26:43Speaker 5: Greg Doyle, who's a long-time columnist in Indy, 2G' s YEL.
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: He wrote that get ready for a complete breakdown and
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: a long rebuild.
- 1:26:56Speaker 7: Well, they need a quarterback. The thing that Benjamin Solak
- 1:27:02Speaker 7: was talking about today was does Steichen do enough in
- 1:27:07Speaker 7: the rest of the way to warrant coming back to
- 1:27:10Speaker 7: help the next quarterback, because his track record with quarterbacks, really,
- 1:27:15Speaker 7: Anthony Richardson notwithstanding, has been pretty good. You know, he
- 1:27:18Speaker 7: was really good with Jalen Hurts. He was really good.
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: With Daniel Jones. But don't you think that hiring a
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: new GM, he's probably going to get his own coach?
- 1:27:24Speaker 7: Well, I think that they got rid of this GM
- 1:27:27Speaker 7: because they don't want him having anything to do with
- 1:27:29Speaker 7: whoever the next quarterback is.
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: Oh, because he just gave Daniel Jones the contract, right?
- 1:27:33Speaker 8: No, well, not necessarily.
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: It's probably going to end up that way because I
- 1:27:37Speaker 7: don't think the Colts are going to turn it around, but...
- 1:27:39Speaker 7: Let's say the Colts win eight or nine games. You
- 1:27:44Speaker 7: could say, okay, so he obviously has the ability to coach.
- 1:27:49Speaker 7: He's done well with mid-quarterbacks. Let's see if we can
- 1:27:53Speaker 7: get a good young quarterback that he can develop. It
- 1:27:55Speaker 7: didn't work with Anthony Richardson, but he also got hurt.
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: He's also, I mean, that was a bad pick.
- 1:28:00Speaker 7: Yeah. But it was supposed to be sort of a
- 1:28:02Speaker 7: developmental guy, and then he gets hurt constantly. Like, even
- 1:28:06Speaker 7: your guy had no, like, he couldn't do it with
- 1:28:08Speaker 7: Trey Lance.
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:28:09Speaker 7: What would you give up for Quentin Nelson? So I
- 1:28:10Speaker 7: thought Solak made a lot of good points today. I'm
- 1:28:12Speaker 7: stealing them all from him, by the way.
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: What would you give up for Quentin Nelson?
- 1:28:16Speaker 7: Left guard. He's a left guard.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:28:18Speaker 7: What would you give up for him?
- 1:28:20Speaker 8: So what would we do with Veritaker?
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: Fourth round pick.
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: Veritaker's hurt.
- 1:28:23Speaker 8: Move him to right guard.
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: Okay, so now we're going to trade for Quentin Nelson.
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: Now we're going to have three guards that we're paying
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: big money to. One of them is going to move
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: from left to right.
- 1:28:33Speaker 7: Oh, Evan. I just.
- 1:28:34Speaker 8: I mean, are we going to.
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: So no, you wouldn't... So just the answer is no.
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: You don't you don't have to like disgrace me for
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: asking the question.
- 1:28:42Speaker 8: I'm not disgracing you.
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: I'm explaining to you the logic of the trade.
- 1:28:47Speaker 8: I would be interested in that.
- 1:28:48Speaker 7: I don't know what, I'm not good at predicting what
- 1:28:50Speaker 7: these guys would, you know, maybe a day three pick,
- 1:28:52Speaker 7: like a fourth round pick or something.
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: I don't know. How old is he?
- 1:28:55Speaker 8: He's getting older.
- 1:28:56Speaker 4: He's a hell of a player and maybe a hall
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: of famer, but like, that's a lot of money and
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: a lot of resources invested in guard.
- 1:29:04Speaker 7: We couldn't figure out what to do with him.
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: Didn't they just sign Daniel Jones this offseason and they
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: re-up on all of this?
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: It's a friendly deal.
- 1:29:11Speaker 7: It's a small deal?
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:29:12Speaker 8: It's a short-term deal. Short-term, short money.
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: It's good money for him.
- 1:29:17Speaker 7: It's good money.
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: It's one of those deals that looks better than it
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: is with a lot of fuck on it. I'm not
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: saying they can't use Quentin Nelson. It's a lot of
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: moving parts. It's a lot invested in guards. Not investing
- 1:29:28Speaker 4: in the offensive line.
- 1:29:30Speaker 5: That's all it is right now is moving parts.
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: I'm just saying.
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: Quentin Nelson's not going to come in here and play right.
- 1:29:37Speaker 5: It's not like it's the picture of stability right now.
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: I understand that. Did you see AVT get hurt? Did
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: you see what it was or did he just kind
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: of disappear? How do you pull a hammy?
- 1:29:47Speaker 5: On the line.
- 1:29:49Speaker 8: Fred had a game. He tried to open it up.
- 1:29:51Speaker 7: Fred had a game on Sunday. Can I just tell
- 1:29:53Speaker 7: you that?
- 1:29:53Speaker 8: The comedy level was high.
- 1:29:56Speaker 5: I've got the earphone in my ear, so I don't
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: know how loud I'm talking.
- 1:29:59Speaker 7: I wish that we had you mic'd up when Ramondre
- 1:30:01Speaker 7: Stevenson got stuffed inside and bounced outside and got like
- 1:30:05Speaker 7: a yard.
- 1:30:05Speaker 8: And you just went, there you go.
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: There it is. I like the effort.
- 1:30:10Speaker 8: I think he got three yards on the play.
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: I don't care. I like the effort.
- 1:30:13Speaker 8: That's what they do every play to get three yards.
- 1:30:15Speaker 8: That's why Corey Turner was so impressive.
- 1:30:17Speaker 7: At the end of the game because I don't think
- 1:30:18Speaker 7: they were.
- 1:30:18Speaker 5: Blasting holes for him.
- 1:30:20Speaker 8: He was creating yards.
- 1:30:21Speaker 5: I liked trying to go outside. I liked it.
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: It is funny because Fred is doing his blog so
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: he's a little bit in his own world, you know,
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: so he'll just like come with random questions to us
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: of like, who is that?
- 1:30:30Speaker 7: I can only imagine what he's dealing with because it's,
- 1:30:33Speaker 7: you know, it's, The guys that we hear from, like,
- 1:30:35Speaker 7: you know, are they going to cut this guy?
- 1:30:36Speaker 8: Are they going to bench that guy? This coach needs
- 1:30:39Speaker 8: to go.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: He's calming the masses.
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: He's trying to maintain order.
- 1:30:41Speaker 7: I have an issue with Doug Marone. Doug Marone was
- 1:30:45Speaker 7: making do with, like, the eighth and ninth offensive linemen
- 1:30:48Speaker 7: the other day.
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: But now I preemptively, you know, call people out. So
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: I'm like, guys, if the Jets score on the first drive,
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: I don't want to hear you saying that the sky
- 1:31:00Speaker 5: is falling. It's the first drive script. You know, we
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: see this all the time. Don't freak out. So, I
- 1:31:07Speaker 5: have to... That's good.
- 1:31:09Speaker 8: Keep them in their place.
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: That's good. I already told you.
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: Let's see. Anthony writes in, I have no issue with
- 1:31:15Speaker 5: Christian from L.A. I actually like his contribution to the show,
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: but I can't help but chuckle every time I see
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: Lomu get praise for his play. Because he was very
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: against that pick. Christian and L.A.
- 1:31:27Speaker 8: So was I. I ate my crow about that on Catch-22.
- 1:31:31Speaker 5: I had.
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: They have needed him and he's risen to the occasion
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: and he's played well. And I, I think the biggest
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: thing to me at the time was, I just felt
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: like they weren't in the, at a point in the,
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: build here where they could take luxury picks where they
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: could draft third tackles but.
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: You call it a luxury pick they needed a tackle
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: moses moses more you know morgan moses was not.
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: It was a luxury pick like they didn't they needed
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: it they needed a future right tackle they didn't need
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: a right tackle that day no you probably.
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: Were going to need them this year you knew that.
- 1:32:04Speaker 8: Yeah but like they needed vidarian low last.
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: And i don't think it's the one tackle is luxury.
- 1:32:10Speaker 8: I just felt like they weren't there yet.
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: Especially when you've got Drake May, young quarterback, you're trying
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: to do everything you can to help him. They've done
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: a lot in the wide receiver court, you know, on paper.
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: They've done a lot on the offensive line. So I
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: looked at it as kind of a necessary pick.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: See, I mean, when you put the 11 starters on
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: both sides of the ball, they didn't need a tackle.
- 1:32:32Speaker 8: They had Campbell and they had Moses.
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: They needed a right tackle of the future, a successor
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: to Morgan Moses, no doubt about that. But they didn't
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: need that if you had a hole on the roster
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: and you're looking at it going into the draft.
- 1:32:44Speaker 5: It wasn't a hole necessarily, but you knew you were
- 1:32:47Speaker 5: going to need it. Really, you know, in the near future,
- 1:32:50Speaker 5: not in the distant future.
- 1:32:52Speaker 8: Yeah, I guess. I mean, it turned out that way,
- 1:32:54Speaker 8: so they.
- 1:32:55Speaker 7: Were right about it.
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: Thank you, Elliot Wolfe.
- 1:32:57Speaker 8: I just think to say that it was a glaring
- 1:33:00Speaker 8: hole at the time.
- 1:33:00Speaker 7: They really needed him on the left side last week.
- 1:33:03Speaker 7: Was that why they got him?
- 1:33:05Speaker 5: No, they didn't get him. That's not why they got him.
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: They got him for the right side.
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: But they ended up being right. They've had injuries, and
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: he's played, and he's played well.
- 1:33:15Speaker 8: Then I like the pick even less.
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: Everything is we'll see.
- 1:33:17Speaker 7: Let's put it that way.
- 1:33:17Speaker 5: Everything is we'll see.
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: But if they got him, and they planned on playing
- 1:33:21Speaker 7: a guy who's never played the right side, and they
- 1:33:22Speaker 7: say he's our right tackle, then I'm with Evan even more.
- 1:33:26Speaker 7: I like the pick even less.
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: Well, isn't that what they did?
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: No.
- 1:33:30Speaker 7: I don't know what they did.
- 1:33:30Speaker 8: They took a tackle, a depth tackle.
- 1:33:34Speaker 7: And whoever got hurt, they were going to try to play,
- 1:33:36Speaker 7: but like, you don't know that he was going to
- 1:33:37Speaker 7: be able to play the right side.
- 1:33:39Speaker 5: I think that they had, that's.
- 1:33:40Speaker 8: The first time he demonstrated the ability to play.
- 1:33:42Speaker 5: On the right side. But I think they had designs
- 1:33:44Speaker 5: on making him a right tackle. Agree.
- 1:33:46Speaker 7: We'll see. And they've, they've been right.
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: Like, I'm not like, I'm, I'm trying to give them credit.
- 1:33:51Speaker 4: Like they've been right about this. They, both their tackles
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: have gotten hurt and back to back weeks. And he's
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: stepped up and he's.
- 1:33:57Speaker 7: I'm in between you two guys. I, I'm not, I'm
- 1:33:59Speaker 7: not anywhere. I'm kind of more on your side.
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: Um, Of course, Deuce is Switzerland over here. No, I
- 1:34:03Speaker 5: like the pick.
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: I like the pick.
- 1:34:05Speaker 7: I didn't love the pick, but I didn't dislike it
- 1:34:08Speaker 7: like you did.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: Protect Drake May. That's the priority one.
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: Long term.
- 1:34:13Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:34:13Speaker 7: I don't think you need to take him in the
- 1:34:14Speaker 7: first tackles back-to-back years in the first round to protect
- 1:34:18Speaker 7: your quarterback.
- 1:34:19Speaker 8: And I think you kind of saw it on Sunday.
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: MJ writes in.
- 1:34:24Speaker 8: You got your eighth and ninth line out there.
- 1:34:25Speaker 7: I'm laying down my sword.
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: You're fine.
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: Here we are getting into an argument about it again. Like,
- 1:34:31Speaker 3: Suddenly we're back to 2023. Our tackles don't matter.
- 1:34:34Speaker 5: Geez, no matter what, even when Christian L.A. doesn't call,
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: he creates an argument.
- 1:34:39Speaker 8: I'm not saying I was wrong.
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: They were right for drafting Lomu, and we're still arguing
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: about it.
- 1:34:44Speaker 8: I like the new deuce.
- 1:34:45Speaker 7: The passive-aggressive deuce is my new favorite deuce. The shots
- 1:34:49Speaker 7: he takes at me.
- 1:34:50Speaker 8: So it's the same.
- 1:34:52Speaker 7: It's the same now to get veteran guys that have
- 1:34:56Speaker 7: played in the league and just plug them in on
- 1:34:58Speaker 7: the offensive line.
- 1:34:59Speaker 8: As opposed to just putting.
- 1:35:01Speaker 8: I even forget this guy's name. What was the guy's name?
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: Trey.
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: What was his name?
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: Trey.
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: Demontre Jacobs.
- 1:35:08Speaker 8: Demontre Jacobs. Like, that's the same thing? We're comparing that?
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: I don't want to get to that point again. I mean,
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: I just brought him up.
- 1:35:16Speaker 8: But Arian Lowe is fine, by the way. He played
- 1:35:18Speaker 8: fine when he had to play last year. And he's
- 1:35:20Speaker 8: played fine this year for San Francisco.
- 1:35:22Speaker 7: Fine player.
- 1:35:23Speaker 8: On the left side, right side?
- 1:35:25Speaker 5: All right. MJ writes in, is anyone else ticked off
- 1:35:28Speaker 5: by the sideline interviews of the coaches? They are meaningless.
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: The coaches never say anything enlightening. It's all the cliches
- 1:35:35Speaker 5: like we need to work harder, offense, defense, special teams
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: need to elevate their play. I hate this segment and
- 1:35:40Speaker 5: want to see it gone. Let me know if anyone
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: else remembers someone saying something that is actually useful.
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: I have not watched a single one of those. Either
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: we're up in the press box or here and I'm
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: running to get our food.
- 1:35:53Speaker 7: I hate interviews, period. I never saw really anything. But
- 1:35:56Speaker 7: the only thing that I would say that, you know,
- 1:35:58Speaker 7: every once in a while you hear something that makes
- 1:36:02Speaker 7: you say, oh, my God, I can't believe that. Evidently,
- 1:36:04Speaker 7: Aaron Glenn thought they were getting the ball to start
- 1:36:06Speaker 7: the second.
- 1:36:06Speaker 8: Half of this game. Is that a story that was
- 1:36:08Speaker 8: making the rounds?
- 1:36:09Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Like.
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: He did say it.
- 1:36:13Speaker 7: That's kind of a peek inside the window of a
- 1:36:15Speaker 7: poorly coached team.
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: They do it because every once in a while you
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: get something notable.
- 1:36:21Speaker 8: No, you've never get anything. It's rare.
- 1:36:24Speaker 7: It's rare.
- 1:36:25Speaker 8: Player interviews, coach interviews.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: Awful.
- 1:36:27Speaker 5: But sometimes you get the coach who's like really mean
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: and he, you know, It's a story because of how
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: he treated the interviewer.
- 1:36:34Speaker 8: And then it becomes about the interviewer. It's not about
- 1:36:37Speaker 8: what he says.
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: Oh, Steve Sarkeesian?
- 1:36:38Speaker 7: Yeah, like poor Holly Rowe got disrespected in a college game.
- 1:36:43Speaker 8: It's so bad. The coaches don't want.
- 1:36:46Speaker 5: To do that.
- 1:36:46Speaker 8: The only time that I've ever seen it really be
- 1:36:48Speaker 8: good was.
- 1:36:50Speaker 4: sorry, a receiver like crab chief from Richard, which is
- 1:36:54Speaker 4: like maybe one of the most iconic.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:56Speaker 8: So that's, but that's what it takes.
- 1:36:58Speaker 6: Interviews.
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: I Richard, I do want to defend sideline porters a
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: little bit though. They do a lot of stuff off
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: camera to aid the broadcast.
- 1:37:07Speaker 8: Oh, I'm not ripping the sideline report.
- 1:37:09Speaker 5: I know you're not.
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: I'm just saying for the email or that, like their
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: job is a lot more than just those interviews with
- 1:37:15Speaker 4: the coaches in between interviews.
- 1:37:16Speaker 8: Halves and stuff like that.
- 1:37:18Speaker 5: Yeah, they're their eyes and ears down there.
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: Right, so like when guys are getting checked out for
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: injuries or leaving the field.
- 1:37:23Speaker 7: Yeah, there's value in that.
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: The broadcast up top is not necessarily looking at all
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: that kind of stuff in there. They're sort of like
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: doing a lot of talking off camera.
- 1:37:32Speaker 7: Even when they're talking about like what's going on on
- 1:37:35Speaker 7: the bench, not necessarily an injury, like... Bill Belichick just
- 1:37:38Speaker 7: had the whole defense over here for an extended period
- 1:37:40Speaker 7: of time and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. That's
- 1:37:43Speaker 7: interesting to me. That's interesting insight that I'm not going
- 1:37:46Speaker 7: to get from an interview.
- 1:37:47Speaker 5: Did you see the clip going around of the sideline
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: reporter post-game interview with Josh Allen and she pats his butt? No.
- 1:37:55Speaker 7: Tracy Wilson?
- 1:37:56Speaker 8: No, I don't know who it was.
- 1:38:00Speaker 7: Good job. That's what she did say. I didn't see that,
- 1:38:04Speaker 7: but I actually was listening because that was right around
- 1:38:07Speaker 7: the time I got home the other day. And I
- 1:38:10Speaker 7: do always find it interesting just how much they all
- 1:38:12Speaker 7: know everyone. She's getting ready to interview Josh Allen and
- 1:38:19Speaker 7: he turns and he goes, how you doing, Trace?
- 1:38:21Speaker 8: And I was just like, how.
- 1:38:22Speaker 7: Casual they were with each other.
- 1:38:25Speaker 8: Like kind of like stood out to me.
- 1:38:27Speaker 7: And then like Tracy Wilson has that relationship with literally
- 1:38:30Speaker 7: hundreds of players. Cause she's done it. She's the ultimate professional.
- 1:38:33Speaker 7: She's done it forever. And she's, she's really good at
- 1:38:36Speaker 7: that role, but that I didn't actually see it. So
- 1:38:39Speaker 7: I didn't smash.
- 1:38:40Speaker 8: I didn't see the pat on the butt.
- 1:38:41Speaker 5: Do you find it? You got it. Who is it?
- 1:38:46Speaker 5: Tracy Wilson.
- 1:38:46Speaker 8: I told you, Tracy Wilson interviewed Josh Allen.
- 1:38:48Speaker 5: When did it happen?
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: Sunday.
- 1:38:49Speaker 7: Maybe he's just.
- 1:38:50Speaker 5: This Sunday.
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: Maybe she's just really... Like, she misjudged... You can't do that.
- 1:38:55Speaker 7: Well, she's also so small.
- 1:38:56Speaker 5: Can you imagine if a male reporter did that to, like,
- 1:38:58Speaker 5: a WNBA player?
- 1:39:00Speaker 7: Oh, well, that'd be different.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: You know what they say, too, is that what happens
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: in Vegas stays in Vegas, so she was probably, you know,
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: going that route.
- 1:39:07Speaker 7: You can't do that.
- 1:39:08Speaker 8: That's not professional. I'm sure she didn't do it on purpose.
- 1:39:13Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: She probably went to, like, go, like.
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: Oh, no, no, no.
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: They're trying to say in the headlines that she was
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: aiming for his back, but because she's so short, she
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: hit his butt. Yeah, like, I don't think it was.
- 1:39:24Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:39:25Speaker 5: You really think.
- 1:39:27Speaker 8: I'm going to say I'm going to be guilty of...
- 1:39:28Speaker 8: purposely try to slap him on the butt.
- 1:39:30Speaker 5: Watch it. Watch it.
- 1:39:31Speaker 7: I will.
- 1:39:32Speaker 5: Just watch it.
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: I will.
- 1:39:33Speaker 7: I will watch it.
- 1:39:34Speaker 8: Just watch it and tell me what you think.
- 1:39:35Speaker 7: And I'm guilty because I like Tracy Wilson and I'm
- 1:39:37Speaker 7: going to see her side of it.
- 1:39:38Speaker 5: Yeah, tell me what you think. I know.
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: Ev, you like Josh Allen. I'm surprised you can't see
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: why she would do it.
- 1:39:42Speaker 8: No, not like that.
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: She couldn't reach his back. It was too high.
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: Why are you patting anybody?
- 1:39:47Speaker 8: So did you guys, speaking of the media thing.
- 1:39:49Speaker 5: Anywhere.
- 1:39:50Speaker 7: No, but so that's a fair point. Did you see
- 1:39:53Speaker 7: this thing in San Francisco where the guy went off
- 1:39:56Speaker 7: on a fellow 49ers reporter? It was on like, I
- 1:40:00Speaker 7: saw it on awful announcing.
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know.
- 1:40:02Speaker 7: A guy who covers the team went off on somebody
- 1:40:06Speaker 7: else who covers the team. Because he just, like, after games,
- 1:40:09Speaker 7: he goes in the locker room and he hugs all
- 1:40:10Speaker 7: the players.
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: I did see that.
- 1:40:12Speaker 8: I heard that.
- 1:40:13Speaker 7: A reporter?
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: Yeah. You're supposed to do fist bumps.
- 1:40:17Speaker 7: Grant Cohn. Oh, yeah.
- 1:40:20Speaker 3: Wait, Grant Cohn went off or he was the guy hugging?
- 1:40:24Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 1:40:24Speaker 8: He went off on the other guy. He's like that.
- 1:40:26Speaker 8: That doesn't surprise me.
- 1:40:28Speaker 7: But he's right. He goes, I hate him.
- 1:40:33Speaker 8: There's a lot more context here. This is a beef.
- 1:40:36Speaker 8: These two have a beef.
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: Okay, but you shouldn't be hugging players.
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: Okay, but this is... I don't know the situation. I'm
- 1:40:42Speaker 4: obviously not there. I am a little familiar with the
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: 49ers beat, as you could imagine. And the two of
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: them feud a lot because Kona's kind of like the Volan.
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: He's kind of like the... more of a negative slant.
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: And Lombardi's more of like the homer. You know, like
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: he's more positive.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: And so they have an ongoing beef with each other
- 1:41:05Speaker 4: about all this kind of stuff.
- 1:41:07Speaker 5: But if the guy's positive, that's fine. But if he's
- 1:41:09Speaker 5: in there hugging players.
- 1:41:11Speaker 8: There's a difference between being positive and like that.
- 1:41:13Speaker 5: Well, I don't know. Right, it may not be true.
- 1:41:16Speaker 8: I wasn't there.
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: So I don't want to speak on that. I'm just
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: telling you the backstory about the two people.
- 1:41:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I said if. Rick Lawson in Riverside.
- 1:41:23Speaker 7: I could see that happening here. Couldn't you?
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, I wish it would. A hug? No, I
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: wish there was a beef in the media.
- 1:41:34Speaker 7: I think there could be plenty of beef in the media,
- 1:41:36Speaker 7: but I could see people hugging after the game. I
- 1:41:38Speaker 7: could absolutely see that. I could think of five or
- 1:41:39Speaker 7: six guys.
- 1:41:41Speaker 8: I don't even want to like germs.
- 1:41:44Speaker 4: I don't want fist bumps only. You shouldn't be touching.
- 1:41:47Speaker 5: Right. No touching. Like, if I'm a player, like, don't
- 1:41:50Speaker 5: touch me.
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: You shouldn't be touching them no matter what the reasoning
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: behind it is.
- 1:41:54Speaker 7: If you're really doing your job, like, really doing the job,
- 1:41:57Speaker 7: you shouldn't really be affected one way or the other
- 1:41:59Speaker 7: by a win or a loss.
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: I'll shake a hand and say thank you, but that's
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: where I draw the line.
- 1:42:04Speaker 8: Really, I'd rather have you just say thank you and
- 1:42:06Speaker 8: be on with it.
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, like, the little fist bump when you
- 1:42:09Speaker 4: say hello to the person, like, acting like they're a
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: human being before you start.
- 1:42:12Speaker 5: I don't even think you need to do that.
- 1:42:13Speaker 8: Yeah, you need a little bit.
- 1:42:15Speaker 5: It's not a, it's, anyway. Rick in Riverside. Campbell, Wilson,
- 1:42:20Speaker 5: Lomu are promising young players to build around. We need
- 1:42:23Speaker 5: a right guard and a healthy AVT. The time May
- 1:42:26Speaker 5: had to throw the ball on Sunday was amazing. My question,
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: do you keep Lomu as a starter at right tackle,
- 1:42:32Speaker 5: even with a healthy Morgan Moses? I say yes. I
- 1:42:34Speaker 5: think it is accurate to say Moses has dropped off
- 1:42:37Speaker 5: this season either due to age or health. I would
- 1:42:40Speaker 5: keep Lomu at right tackle and let the future begin now.
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: I mean, I get what he's saying, but I would
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: continue to ride Morgan Moses. He had really tough matchups, too,
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: to go through. And I don't deny that he's probably
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: tapering off, but I think the longer you can stretch
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: it out and let Lomu not get thrown into the fire,
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: the better. I think that bore itself out with the
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: opportunity he's gotten here early on, that he's played pretty well.
- 1:43:02Speaker 7: And Fred, if you're right and that's strictly the plan,
- 1:43:06Speaker 7: if he's the right tackle, then yeah, keep playing him
- 1:43:08Speaker 7: because he needs experience at right tackle. He's never played there.
- 1:43:11Speaker 4: He looks a lot better at it than, like, in
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: this game. I was impressed by how comfortable he was.
- 1:43:16Speaker 7: I was a little concerned because I thought that his
- 1:43:18Speaker 7: strong play the previous week might have had something to
- 1:43:22Speaker 7: do with the fact that he was at his normal
- 1:43:24Speaker 7: position on the left side.
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: And what did you think of David Bailey's game overall?
- 1:43:28Speaker 8: He was 20 yards downfield all game.
- 1:43:30Speaker 5: Yeah. I didn't understand it.
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: How they're using him.
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: Well, I don't want to take anything away from the
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: offensive line because, you know, when you get that many
- 1:43:37Speaker 4: guys banged up. But, like, I didn't really think the Jets–
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: like sold out to rush the passer in this game. Uh,
- 1:43:43Speaker 4: they played a lot of coverage schematically, but on top
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: of that, I think that keeping Drake in the pocket
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: and preventing scrambles and that sort of stuff was more than,
- 1:43:52Speaker 4: it was more of like a mush rush game plan
- 1:43:54Speaker 4: than it was like the week before they just teed
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: off on Deshaun Watson.
- 1:43:57Speaker 8: They just went right after him.
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: Uh, Bailey, I thought, um, I think he's got some
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: good speed and I think, you know, I think he's got, uh,
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: some real explosiveness. Uh, he's, he's got to develop maybe
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: a little bit more, uh, you know, secondary rush moves, power,
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: that sort of thing.
- 1:44:13Speaker 8: And Lomu played him in college.
- 1:44:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: And so I think he kind of knew him pretty well, uh,
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: going into the game. I think that was big for
- 1:44:19Speaker 4: him too. Uh, but I, I impressed by the motor
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: and like the explosiveness that he has. You can definitely
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: see like his speed jumps off the tape at you, but,
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: He needs a little bit more seasoning in terms of
- 1:44:30Speaker 4: the rush package, I would say.
- 1:44:33Speaker 5: Spian Fresno writes in, enjoying the Fred and Evan antagonism
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: this season. Keep it coming. And shout out to Chris
- 1:44:39Speaker 5: Hogan for lending Hunter Henry the cloak of invisibility.
- 1:44:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:44:46Speaker 5: Absolutely. You don't think I'm antagonizing.
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: You are. Am I?
- 1:44:50Speaker 7: I do.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: You do?
- 1:44:51Speaker 8: And I'm here for it. Normally, that's me that you're
- 1:44:54Speaker 8: doing that to.
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: I think that's what you're good at, Fred.
- 1:44:56Speaker 5: Antagonizing people?
- 1:44:57Speaker 3: I mean, you definitely would antagonize Eric. I remember that.
- 1:44:59Speaker 5: That I did.
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: You get the little devil look in your eyes. You
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: don't say something, Evan, and look over at me and
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: give me the old eyebrows like you used to do
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: to Eric. You knew when you had Eric, too, on
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: the run, and then you just would double down and
- 1:45:11Speaker 3: hammer and hammer back into the corner.
- 1:45:13Speaker 5: To the point where he's actually walked off the set
- 1:45:15Speaker 5: a couple times. That's why he didn't go to HR.
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:21Speaker 5: I saw this great t-shirt. It said, go ahead, call HR.
- 1:45:25Speaker 5: I love that. Bart in Poland. Unfortunately for us, the
- 1:45:29Speaker 5: Jets have talent on their roster, and they're getting an
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: additional top 10 pick because the Colts are imploding, and
- 1:45:36Speaker 5: they'll probably get a top 20 pick from Dallas Green Bay.
- 1:45:41Speaker 5: Of course, all will be decided on if they hit
- 1:45:44Speaker 5: on a quarterback, but if they do, they'll be scary
- 1:45:47Speaker 5: in the future. The Titans beating the Colts was really
- 1:45:50Speaker 5: a horrendous scenario. Not only the Jets pick got better,
- 1:45:53Speaker 5: but the Dolphins' immediate rival to the top pick won
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: a game. And before people say that we shouldn't worry
- 1:45:59Speaker 5: about that, I'm sure that the Bills also shouldn't have
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: worried we lost all those games that gave us Drake.
- 1:46:06Speaker 7: I don't know, man.
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: The Jets have had talent before. I feel like Garrett
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: Wilson's going to be on the way out, and Omar
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: Cooper's going to start to peak, and then he's going
- 1:46:13Speaker 3: to be, you know.
- 1:46:14Speaker 4: The Jets, they have their own first-round pick, the Colts'
- 1:46:17Speaker 4: first-round pick. And then the better of the Cowboys or Packers.
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: And I think it will probably be the Cowboys. Uh,
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: so there's a chance that they could have their own
- 1:46:26Speaker 4: first round pick might be a top 10 pick eventually.
- 1:46:28Speaker 8: And, uh, the Colts might have a top 10 pick
- 1:46:31Speaker 8: as well.
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: So they, they might be in for like three top
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: 20 picks.
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: You know, if you factor the Cowboys into that too.
- 1:46:38Speaker 7: Apropos of nothing, as I like to say, um, If
- 1:46:43Speaker 7: you're a playoff team, do you automatically slot into the
- 1:46:46Speaker 7: bottom 14 picks? Yeah. So if the Cowboys have a
- 1:46:50Speaker 7: worse record than the Packers, but the Cowboys win the
- 1:46:52Speaker 7: NFC East and the Packers somehow don't make the playoffs,
- 1:46:56Speaker 7: the Packers pick would still be better, right?
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: That's a fair question.
- 1:46:59Speaker 5: Regardless of record?
- 1:47:01Speaker 7: I think the playoff teams are automatically slotted to the
- 1:47:05Speaker 7: bottom 14.
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: I believe that is correct.
- 1:47:07Speaker 7: 14 playoff teams.
- 1:47:08Speaker 4: So right now they would have the 6th, the 10th,
- 1:47:11Speaker 4: and the 13th pick, the Jets, in the 2027 draft.
- 1:47:16Speaker 7: But you know what kills them?
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: How could they screw it up?
- 1:47:19Speaker 7: They're not even screwing it up. College football is because
- 1:47:22Speaker 7: you tell me which guy you'd pick. Right, right.
- 1:47:24Speaker 8: Nesta Maker.
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:47:25Speaker 3: Yeah, he's the one now, huh?
- 1:47:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: Who? Who?
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: I don't like him.
- 1:47:30Speaker 5: I don't like him.
- 1:47:32Speaker 8: I don't think he's all that good. The kid at
- 1:47:37Speaker 8: Oregon got hurt.
- 1:47:38Speaker 7: I like him, but dirty play that knocked him out.
- 1:47:42Speaker 8: What do you.
- 1:47:43Speaker 5: Think of Bill's guy in North Carolina? He seemed okay.
- 1:47:46Speaker 8: Oh, I saw him again this week.
- 1:47:47Speaker 7: He is so bad.
- 1:47:48Speaker 5: But last week, he looked good.
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: I don't think he's on the radar right now.
- 1:47:55Speaker 7: I kind of like Mensah from Miami, but I don't
- 1:47:59Speaker 7: know if it translates. I like Trinidad Chambliss, but he's tiny.
- 1:48:06Speaker 7: He's really small. I don't know.
- 1:48:08Speaker 3: There's a lot of numbers, but not.
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: A lot of.
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: We keep on arguing about Chambliss, me, and Barth because
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: I think he's small. yeah uh i guess he's listed
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: at like six one yeah no chance and i think
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: he's more of like five ten i was listening to
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: six maybe six one in cleats but like that's not
- 1:48:23Speaker 4: what we're doing here um i the kid from oregon
- 1:48:27Speaker 4: i think is gonna be good i like that i
- 1:48:29Speaker 4: do like him kid from usc took him out it
- 1:48:31Speaker 4: was dirty hit that was uh then the um I
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: still have Arch stock.
- 1:48:37Speaker 8: I still don't think Arch is as bad as he's played.
- 1:48:38Speaker 8: I'm not giving up on him. I just don't think
- 1:48:40Speaker 8: he's ready. I don't think he's ready.
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: Whatever's going on at Texas right now, Sarkisian's not developing
- 1:48:45Speaker 4: him either.
- 1:48:46Speaker 8: He's not getting any better.
- 1:48:47Speaker 4: They're threatening to bench him. Yeah, he's clearly physically talented,
- 1:48:52Speaker 4: and there's something going on there.
- 1:48:55Speaker 7: I want to retract my statement. The Mesta maker, I'm
- 1:48:58Speaker 7: going to give that a little bit more time. I
- 1:48:59Speaker 7: want to give it a little bit more research. I
- 1:49:02Speaker 7: saw him early in the season, didn't like what I saw,
- 1:49:05Speaker 7: um looked like maybe it was a little bit of
- 1:49:08Speaker 7: an adjustment for him he came from north texas to
- 1:49:10Speaker 7: oklahoma state maybe he just wasn't quite ready for that
- 1:49:13Speaker 7: jump up and now he's settled in so yeah let
- 1:49:15Speaker 7: me see him again you know okay.
- 1:49:17Speaker 4: It was north texas i haven't i've only watched his
- 1:49:20Speaker 4: oklahoma state stuff like casually but cameron dorner played with
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: him at north texas and i remember watching dorner when
- 1:49:29Speaker 4: the patriots signed him.
- 1:49:30Speaker 7: As maybe i'll pull a mike reese and talk to
- 1:49:31Speaker 7: cameron dorner in here as a locker room as.
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: A udfa and i i i tend to do this
- 1:49:36Speaker 4: where i like text alex like who's his quarterback for
- 1:49:39Speaker 4: north texas and he'll be like oh he's got ability
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: yeah he's like you mean mess to make her the
- 1:49:43Speaker 4: guy that's gonna be a top 10 pick next year
- 1:49:45Speaker 4: and i'm.
- 1:49:45Speaker 8: Like yeah that's what i do with you with with
- 1:49:47Speaker 8: edge rush.
- 1:49:47Speaker 7: Like the current draft not like the draft three years
- 1:49:50Speaker 7: from now But, yeah, he's got some talent.
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: I got 10 guys just, you know, I keep track
- 1:49:55Speaker 3: kind of like when mock drafts come out, just to
- 1:49:57Speaker 3: keep a list of, like, guys to look at once
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: the draft gets here. But, you know, like, the fact
- 1:50:00Speaker 3: that it's not top-heavy quarterbacks, it's like first, second, round.
- 1:50:03Speaker 8: Because they're all dropping.
- 1:50:04Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:50:04Speaker 8: Because none of them are having good years.
- 1:50:06Speaker 5: You know, we're not talking college football right now.
- 1:50:08Speaker 6: Okay, sorry.
- 1:50:09Speaker 5: That's enough. That's enough.
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:50:11Speaker 3: That's enough.
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: We're going into week seven of the NFL season.
- 1:50:14Speaker 8: We'll talk about, I think Jeremiah Smith's going to be
- 1:50:16Speaker 8: the number one overall pick.
- 1:50:17Speaker 7: Are we over the hump?
- 1:50:18Speaker 3: Jerry Smith, I like him.
- 1:50:19Speaker 5: No, we're not over the hump. That was good. Mike
- 1:50:22Speaker 5: in the OC, on my flight to Chicago, and I
- 1:50:25Speaker 5: was wondering if the team will host any tailgating or
- 1:50:27Speaker 5: fan events prior to Thursday's game. Go to Patriots Tailgate
- 1:50:31Speaker 5: on Facebook, and if there's anything going on, it'll be there.
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: I haven't heard of anything. No one's told me about anything.
- 1:50:36Speaker 8: What do you got?
- 1:50:37Speaker 7: Do you got a plan for Chicago?
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: Well, we're not getting into it later. We're not getting
- 1:50:41Speaker 5: into it later.
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't like that.
- 1:50:42Speaker 5: You should get a dinner, huh? Yeah. But he has
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: a stump to gump question for Paul. Tom Brady threw
- 1:50:52Speaker 5: four touchdowns against the 49ers in his first NFL game
- 1:50:55Speaker 5: back home in the Bay Area. Who were the four
- 1:50:58Speaker 5: players who caught those touchdowns? Malcolm Mitchell.
- 1:51:00Speaker 7: Malcolm Mitchell was.
- 1:51:01Speaker 3: One of them.
- 1:51:01Speaker 5: That is true. It was rainy. Bonus if you know
- 1:51:07Speaker 5: how long his touchdown catch was.
- 1:51:08Speaker 8: 39 yards.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: 56.
- 1:51:10Speaker 7: Took a shot.
- 1:51:11Speaker 8: I remember the Malcolm Mitchell one was a great throw.
- 1:51:14Speaker 5: It was James White, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, and Malcolm Mitchell.
- 1:51:18Speaker 7: Yep.
- 1:51:19Speaker 15: Stumped.
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:20Speaker 3: What would have happened if Malcolm Mitchell had two working Ds?
- 1:51:23Speaker 3: It's too bad.
- 1:51:24Speaker 7: He would have been probably drafted about 50 picks earlier
- 1:51:26Speaker 7: than he was.
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: Remember when we did that thing with him, Paul? We
- 1:51:28Speaker 3: watched the game again during COVID.
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: The Super Bowl.
- 1:51:31Speaker 3: It was like the three of us on our computers.
- 1:51:33Speaker 3: That was funny.
- 1:51:34Speaker 8: But yeah, that's why he was available in the third round.
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:37Speaker 3: Good player. Bone on bone.
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: Probably.
- 1:51:43Speaker 5: Oh, okay. Kat in Chicago.
- 1:51:45Speaker 8: Hey, what's up, Kat?
- 1:51:47Speaker 5: Writing in, sounds like there will be a meetup for
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: the Patriots tailgate at the Theory Bar, T-H-E-O-R-Y, Theory Bar. Also,
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: a couple of magic bar and nightclubs in the city
- 1:52:00Speaker 5: if you'd like. Shoot me an email if so. I
- 1:52:02Speaker 5: will do that after the show, Kat. I'm flagging your email,
- 1:52:08Speaker 5: and I will get in touch with you after the show.
- 1:52:11Speaker 5: Because I'm always good for a good magic show. You
- 1:52:15Speaker 5: guys like magic? What was that?
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: You doing magic?
- 1:52:20Speaker 8: I thought we were talking about a different kind of magic.
- 1:52:22Speaker 5: I like close-up magic.
- 1:52:24Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 1:52:25Speaker 8: I participated in a magic thing once when I was
- 1:52:27Speaker 8: a kid.
- 1:52:28Speaker 5: Did you?
- 1:52:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:52:29Speaker 5: What was that all about?
- 1:52:30Speaker 8: They called me up from the crowd.
- 1:52:32Speaker 5: Who's they?
- 1:52:33Speaker 8: The magician.
- 1:52:34Speaker 5: Where was this? Set the stage.
- 1:52:37Speaker 4: I was on a family vacation, and we went to
- 1:52:40Speaker 4: this magic show. And it was the the is when
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: they like cut the girl in half, you know, like
- 1:52:46Speaker 4: that was what he was going to do.
- 1:52:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: And he called me up on the stage and threatened
- 1:52:52Speaker 4: to cut me in half. And I was probably that's
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: my parents.
- 1:52:56Speaker 7: But, you know.
- 1:52:57Speaker 4: Eight years old, seven years old. So I pointed at
- 1:53:00Speaker 4: the girl and said, no, you're supposed to cut her
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: in half.
- 1:53:03Speaker 8: Not cut me in half.
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: And so then she played it like I threw her
- 1:53:07Speaker 4: under the bus and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:53:09Speaker 8: So it was like a whole.
- 1:53:11Speaker 5: Afterwards, did you analyze a trick and tell everybody how
- 1:53:13Speaker 5: it worked?
- 1:53:13Speaker 7: That's what I was thinking.
- 1:53:15Speaker 8: Just clearly... There's a hole in there.
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: I'm telling a great story about my childhood.
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: Well, you know I'm only asking you to do it
- 1:53:23Speaker 5: so I can get something that I can make fun of.
- 1:53:26Speaker 7: And just so you know, Mike, you know, we don't
- 1:53:29Speaker 7: have time for college football. I'm wondering who the quarterbacks
- 1:53:31Speaker 7: are going to get taken, but we do have time
- 1:53:33Speaker 7: for two minutes on magic.
- 1:53:35Speaker 5: Damn right. Damn right. Mark's in Connecticut. What's up, Mark?
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: Hey, how you guys doing today, guys?
- 1:53:43Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: Well, I'm wondering your thoughts. Wouldn't it be nice to
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: have Stefan Diggs right about now? He's actually, he looked
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: pretty good last night in that game. You know, I
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: just don't know why we had to get rid of him,
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: because I think that he would have been a really
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: good player in the slot for Drake May right now. Obviously,
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: the whole booty thing. I'm a big Kajon booty fan.
- 1:54:07Speaker 6: I really wish that we had kept him.
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: But I just wanted to get your guys' take on
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: the big thing, because I don't think he's making a lot.
- 1:54:13Speaker 6: Of money right now, is he?
- 1:54:14Speaker 8: No, but he would have been if you kept him.
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: Right, but you're you cut him and you could have
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: brought him back for cheaper.
- 1:54:22Speaker 7: Well, if he would. If he decided that he would
- 1:54:25Speaker 7: do that, sure.
- 1:54:26Speaker 5: Thanks, Mark.
- 1:54:27Speaker 4: I give him a lot of credit for, like, he's
- 1:54:29Speaker 4: reinvented himself as this, like, underneath chain mover type of receiver,
- 1:54:34Speaker 4: like right out of the slot. Like Mark said, he
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: made a one-handed catch last night.
- 1:54:38Speaker 3: That was sick.
- 1:54:39Speaker 8: He also had some bad drops.
- 1:54:40Speaker 3: Almost broke his hand, too.
- 1:54:41Speaker 5: Did you see that one?
- 1:54:42Speaker 7: But, yeah, I mean, would I love to have him
- 1:54:44Speaker 7: right now, considering all the injuries? They have two wide
- 1:54:47Speaker 7: receivers on IR. One of them who just came off
- 1:54:50Speaker 7: of IR and looks incredibly rusty. Yeah, I wish they
- 1:54:53Speaker 7: still had Diggs.
- 1:54:54Speaker 3: Yeah, the thing that just hangs over my head is
- 1:54:56Speaker 3: he just disappeared at the end last year. It was
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: great in Buffalo and great seeing him pump the team
- 1:55:03Speaker 3: up and being that kind of locker room energy guy.
- 1:55:07Speaker 3: But the tail off at the end was just, and
- 1:55:09Speaker 3: I know it's all connected to good defenses and Drake
- 1:55:11Speaker 3: and all that, but you know, I, I just wonder,
- 1:55:14Speaker 3: you know, this year, would it be better, you know,
- 1:55:15Speaker 3: down the end? Like it would have been great early
- 1:55:17Speaker 3: on with.
- 1:55:17Speaker 4: Buffalo, but it just seems like he, and like I said, I,
- 1:55:22Speaker 4: he's still productive doing it, but even last night with
- 1:55:24Speaker 4: the game with the 49ers, they started bracketing him inside out.
- 1:55:28Speaker 4: Like they knew that he's just going to run these
- 1:55:29Speaker 4: little option routes underneath the defense. And, they started having
- 1:55:32Speaker 4: Fred Warner come over and bracket and close him, and
- 1:55:35Speaker 4: he just doesn't have the juice anymore to split it. Like,
- 1:55:37Speaker 4: when you have guys on either side of you, you
- 1:55:39Speaker 4: want to just go right through it and split it vertically,
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: and that's how you get them out of that kind
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: of coverage.
- 1:55:44Speaker 8: But he just doesn't really have that ability.
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: So there's a couple times later on in that game,
- 1:55:48Speaker 4: as the commanders were trying to come back, that he
- 1:55:50Speaker 4: was Daniels' first read, and he was getting bracketed, and
- 1:55:53Speaker 4: there was no place for him to go with the ball.
- 1:55:55Speaker 8: We saw that a.
- 1:55:56Speaker 3: Lot in the playoffs last year, too, with the Patriots.
- 1:55:59Speaker 5: Travis in West Virginia... Another quirk of ours, I guess.
- 1:56:03Speaker 5: Some of you pronounce schedule as a three-syllable word, but
- 1:56:06Speaker 5: it's actually only two syllables. Schedule, I guess.
- 1:56:09Speaker 7: Who does that? You just pronounced it three.
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:56:12Speaker 7: Schedule.
- 1:56:13Speaker 5: Schedule. But I don't do that. Who does that? Schedule.
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: Schedule.
- 1:56:16Speaker 5: Do any of you do that?
- 1:56:16Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: Schedule.
- 1:56:19Speaker 8: I don't say schedule.
- 1:56:20Speaker 3: There's a chance that is.
- 1:56:21Speaker 7: I don't say that, so I'm guilty.
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: What do you say?
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: Schedule?
- 1:56:24Speaker 7: I would say schedule.
- 1:56:24Speaker 5: Schedule.
- 1:56:25Speaker 8: I'm guilty of that. Three syllables.
- 1:56:29Speaker 5: It's not schedule.
- 1:56:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:56:31Speaker 8: I think it sounds funny.
- 1:56:32Speaker 5: Schedule.
- 1:56:34Speaker 8: I don't think people say that.
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: Schedule.
- 1:56:36Speaker 8: So I'm wrong.
- 1:56:37Speaker 7: I'm the one that does.
- 1:56:38Speaker 5: It three syllables. I don't know if it's something like
- 1:56:39Speaker 5: Bob Soce. You were copying.
- 1:56:41Speaker 7: Something from the schedule.
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: No, no, no. That's just program.
- 1:56:43Speaker 5: I think I do schedule.
- 1:56:45Speaker 7: Program is just an SEC thing. That's a Southern college football,
- 1:56:48Speaker 7: and I don't want to waste any more.
- 1:56:49Speaker 5: Time on college football. I bet you it's a Southern
- 1:56:51Speaker 5: thing where people say schedule.
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: Schedule.
- 1:56:55Speaker 5: It could be a Southern thing.
- 1:56:57Speaker 7: Say it again, Mike.
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: Schedule.
- 1:56:58Speaker 7: Schedule.
- 1:56:59Speaker 8: Yes, I wouldn't say that, but that's probably right.
- 1:57:02Speaker 5: Well, it is right. It's the way it's pronounced.
- 1:57:05Speaker 8: You think R is.
- 1:57:06Speaker 5: I go by what the dictionary says, like, you know,
- 1:57:08Speaker 5: proper grammar.
- 1:57:09Speaker 8: Right, except for hour. You don't go by proper grammar
- 1:57:12Speaker 8: for that.
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: Hour.
- 1:57:13Speaker 8: That's better.
- 1:57:14Speaker 5: Hour.
- 1:57:15Speaker 7: That's better. Right.
- 1:57:16Speaker 5: The hour is here.
- 1:57:18Speaker 8: That's... That's incorrect.
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: That's two different.
- 1:57:20Speaker 7: The Google issue says it can either have two or
- 1:57:22Speaker 7: three depending on the regional accent.
- 1:57:24Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:57:25Speaker 8: Oh, it's not incorrect.
- 1:57:26Speaker 3: Thank you, Coppola.
- 1:57:27Speaker 8: Thank you, Matt Morrell.
- 1:57:28Speaker 5: So proper grammar, it's one syllable. Thank you.
- 1:57:32Speaker 7: Appreciate you.
- 1:57:33Speaker 5: All right, that's it. We don't have time for anything else.
- 1:57:35Speaker 7: We don't have time to get yelled at anymore by Fred.
- 1:57:38Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:57:38Speaker 8: I do like it when he does it to you, though.
- 1:57:40Speaker 7: He does it to me all the time.
- 1:57:42Speaker 8: Yeah, but you guys, you know.
- 1:57:43Speaker 3: Yeah, he got a thing.
- 1:57:44Speaker 8: It's like Mike and Jeff.
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Listen.
- 1:57:46Speaker 7: Listen.
- 1:57:47Speaker 5: If I didn't like you, I wouldn't make fun of you. Oh,
- 1:57:51Speaker 5: it's okay. That's true.
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: I just don't like it when it gets personal.
- 1:57:56Speaker 4: Let's leave people's medical information off the radio.
- 1:58:03Speaker 8: Anything else, go for it.
- 1:58:05Speaker 5: Because you were sick on the show. You couldn't talk. No,
- 1:58:09Speaker 5: I didn't.
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: I'm not talking about me. If I want to talk
- 1:58:12Speaker 4: about that, that's fine. We were unveiling a little too
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: much about poor Barthie, who we're still working on.
- 1:58:18Speaker 5: Well, don't worry about Barthie. He's not you. You just
- 1:58:20Speaker 5: worry about you.
- 1:58:21Speaker 3: He does worry about Barthie.
- 1:58:23Speaker 8: Only I can make fun of Barthie.
