- 2:24Speaker 4: wants to be in office this time next year. Well,
- 2:26Speaker 4: actually I guess this time next year he would be
- 2:29Speaker 4: campaigning to the gentleman's name is doctor Stephen Eschenauer and
- 2:32Speaker 4: he's running for state Senate. We'll get to know him. Plus,
- 2:34Speaker 4: your calls and text are always welcome. Big Ley Pickley

- 2:39Speaker 4: fifty eight. Tony the Taylor Text three zero four nine
- 2:42Speaker 4: three five five zero zero eight. Well to Welcome to
- 2:44Speaker 4: the show now our good friend sponsor of the show,
- 2:47Speaker 4: doctor Casey Sachs of Bridge Valley. Good morning, good doctor,
- 2:51Speaker 4: and welcome to the show.
- 2:52Speaker 6: Good morning, Gabe. Great to be with you today.
- 2:54Speaker 4: I got two doctors on the show today. I got you,
- 2:57Speaker 4: and then I've got a doctor who uh is running
- 3:00Speaker 4: for state summit. So I got two doctors.
- 3:04Speaker 6: You must be moving up in the world.
- 3:05Speaker 4: I guess I get something something like that. I know
- 3:09Speaker 4: doctor Sachs in my neighborhood. The talk has all been
- 3:12Speaker 4: about fiber, and I'll have more on that at another time.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I want to talk about the training programs. Allow you
- 3:18Speaker 4: to explain this that the training programs at Bridge Valley
- 3:21Speaker 4: offers for those that want to enter the world of
- 3:23Speaker 4: fiber optics.
- 3:25Speaker 6: So that's a great question. We actually have the only
- 3:28Speaker 6: what's called a busy certified training facility. It's the only
- 3:31Speaker 6: one in West Virginia, and it does exactly what you said.
- 3:36Speaker 6: It helps people really be able to better install all
- 3:39Speaker 6: kinds of information and communications technology things like fiber.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And there's a lot of talk about this. As I said,
- 3:47Speaker 4: it's kind of big in my area in Putnam County
- 3:49Speaker 4: right now because it's kind of complicated. But the Putnam
- 3:53Speaker 4: County Commission, you know, got some grants and so on
- 3:56Speaker 4: and so forth to put fiber. We're just trying to
- 3:58Speaker 4: trying to keep people, that's right.
- 4:01Speaker 6: It's actually it's challenging for our employers in the area
- 4:05Speaker 6: to find people who are certified, who come in and
- 4:08Speaker 6: already know what they're doing. And it turns out a
- 4:10Speaker 6: busy certification is pretty fast. It's two intensive, five day courses,
- 4:15Speaker 6: so after ten full days you can sit for and
- 4:18Speaker 6: earn the certification.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Now, obviously it's going to vary depending on what people
- 4:22Speaker 4: to go through this program, doctor Sachs, depend on where
- 4:26Speaker 4: they go and exactly what kind of job. We talk
- 4:28Speaker 4: in decent money with these jobs, yeah, yeah, they are.
- 4:34Speaker 6: And I think that's one of the great things about
- 4:36Speaker 6: Bridge Value is we try really hard to make sure
- 4:38Speaker 6: the certifications that we train people for lead to what
- 4:41Speaker 6: we call family sustaining wage jobs. We want people to
- 4:44Speaker 6: actually get a job where they can pay their rent
- 4:47Speaker 6: and pay for their childcare and get groceries and still
- 4:50Speaker 6: have some left over. And so instead of being paycheck
- 4:52Speaker 6: to paycheck, we try very intentionally to train people for
- 4:56Speaker 6: jobs that really exist in the community that you could
- 4:58Speaker 6: feed your family on.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Talking to again with doctor Cansey Sacksonbridge Valley, the day
- 5:02Speaker 4: Island showing five any Live is brought to you in
- 5:03Speaker 4: part about Hustin's Pizza. Well, this month you can pick
- 5:06Speaker 4: up a large antenn inch pepperoni pizza and an order
- 5:08Speaker 4: of six meat balls for twenty four ninety nine dining
- 5:10Speaker 4: and delivery or pickup visit Hustin's Pizza dot Com. One
- 5:14Speaker 4: of the other sponsors of the show, Charleston Dirty Birds.
- 5:16Speaker 4: I want to get to them a little bit later on.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Isn't one night this week Dirty Birds? I mean, I'm sorry,
- 5:21Speaker 4: Bridge Valley night over at the over at Gomart Ballpark.
- 5:24Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, you asked me something. I don't remember
- 5:26Speaker 6: what the day is.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Yes, well, I will go back through my notes and
- 5:29Speaker 4: I'll figure out what day it is, because I've got
- 5:31Speaker 4: I've got notes for all everything going on with the
- 5:33Speaker 4: Dirty Birds. So I'll get that on a little bit
- 5:35Speaker 4: later on. But yeah, it is going to be uh
- 5:38Speaker 4: Bridge Valley night over at the ballpark. What do you
- 5:39Speaker 4: guys have planned to over there?
- 5:41Speaker 6: It's Wednesday, it's windy Wednesday, Wednesday, okay, And it's always fun.
- 5:46Speaker 6: We always do a reception for students. We make sure
- 5:49Speaker 6: that students can get free tickets, and we want people
- 5:53Speaker 6: to bring families. We try really hard to have things
- 5:55Speaker 6: be family friendly events, and the Dirty Birds really fits
- 5:59Speaker 6: the bill.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Yeah, indeed, and it's always a lot of fun over
- 6:02Speaker 4: the ballpark. Of course, the Dirty Birds have been on
- 6:04Speaker 4: the road it seems like forever, and they regular season
- 6:07Speaker 4: starting to close out. They're going to open up a
- 6:09Speaker 4: series tomorrow night at home that'll take the folks all
- 6:13Speaker 4: the way through the weekend before they close out the
- 6:14Speaker 4: regular season next year. It's just a good opportunity for
- 6:17Speaker 4: you folks at Bridge Valley to get out and just
- 6:19Speaker 4: talk to people at the ballpark and in the community,
- 6:22Speaker 4: and plus something good for your students as well.
- 6:25Speaker 6: It really is. We've been going for years sponsoring one
- 6:27Speaker 6: of the nice at the ballpark, and we always make
- 6:30Speaker 6: sure it's right after back to school, so it's an
- 6:32Speaker 6: early event that students can go to and bring their
- 6:35Speaker 6: families and just have a nice time.
- 6:37Speaker 4: And you got a blood drive going on up at Bridge.
- 6:39Speaker 6: Valley, right, Oh yeah, come give blood. I always think
- 6:42Speaker 6: that the folks who work for bond Fees are vampires.
- 6:45Speaker 6: They are wonderful. They are doing such a great service
- 6:48Speaker 6: for our community. September fifteenth, anyone can come. We set
- 6:53Speaker 6: it up on campus over in Building two thousand on
- 6:55Speaker 6: purpose because as many of your longtime listeners know that
- 6:58Speaker 6: our students are eligible for a financial aid program called
- 7:02Speaker 6: West Virginia Invests and you qualify for that program by
- 7:06Speaker 6: doing some community service, and it turns out giving blood
- 7:09Speaker 6: counts for a couple of hours of community service. So
- 7:11Speaker 6: we try and make it easy and.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Go wrong there. You got a golf tournament coming up
- 7:15Speaker 4: later this month we do.
- 7:17Speaker 6: If you're not signed up yet, please sign up September
- 7:19Speaker 6: twenty ninth. It should be a really good time. We're
- 7:22Speaker 6: up at Edgewood this year and it looks like we're
- 7:25Speaker 6: fixing to sell out, so we're pretty excited about it.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Yeah, well, it's to be a great time, you know.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I mean, golfers love this sort of thing. And let's
- 7:32Speaker 4: be honest with you with ourselves. You know, we only
- 7:34Speaker 4: have a couple of weeks left in summer. Meteorological fall
- 7:38Speaker 4: is already here, so I'm not going to have a
- 7:40Speaker 4: whole lot of more times for golfers to be able
- 7:42Speaker 4: to get out and play golf. So if you'd like
- 7:45Speaker 4: to help out, I guess they just go to the
- 7:46Speaker 4: website if they'd like to put together a team.
- 7:49Speaker 6: That's right, Bridge Valley dot edu.
- 7:51Speaker 4: All right, and we talk a lot about the fame
- 7:53Speaker 4: program that you have there, and I understand you were
- 7:56Speaker 4: telling me about this. You've got a special student taking
- 7:59Speaker 4: part in the program that you're very proud of. It's
- 8:01Speaker 4: a young lady by the name of Kaylee Taylor. Tell
- 8:03Speaker 4: us Kaylee's story.
- 8:05Speaker 6: Well, we're proud of all of our studiures, but I
- 8:07Speaker 6: was bragging about Kaylee with you earlier because she's in
- 8:11Speaker 6: the same program. So it means she comes to Bridge
- 8:13Speaker 6: Valley a couple of days a week for her classes,
- 8:15Speaker 6: she goes to work at Toyota three days a week
- 8:17Speaker 6: for a full time job, and she's just really getting
- 8:20Speaker 6: that hands on experience. She said something like, I just
- 8:25Speaker 6: love that I get to apply what I'm learning at work.
- 8:27Speaker 6: It's not just theory, it's what we're actually doing at work.
- 8:30Speaker 6: And I think it was such a great capture of
- 8:33Speaker 6: that theme program that you really are earning a paycheck
- 8:35Speaker 6: and advancing your skills at the same time.
- 8:37Speaker 4: And again, we have you on a couple times a month,
- 8:39Speaker 4: and you've talked a lot about the FAME program, but
- 8:42Speaker 4: if people are tendering in for the first time, explain
- 8:44Speaker 4: what the FAME program is.
- 8:45Speaker 6: A Bridge Valley so same is the Federation for Advanced
- 8:49Speaker 6: Manufacturing Education. It's a group of local manufacturers that have
- 8:53Speaker 6: gotten together that have said they really have workforce needs,
- 8:57Speaker 6: and so they have agreed on the classes that you
- 8:59Speaker 6: need to take Bridge Valley, and they hire students at
- 9:02Speaker 6: the beginning of their experience and then keep students in
- 9:06Speaker 6: school and pay them while they're going to school so
- 9:08Speaker 6: that they can earn a degree and have a job.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Doctor k cy Sachs of Bridge Valley, it's always a
- 9:14Speaker 4: pleasure to talk to you. Give the folks to the
- 9:16Speaker 4: website again.
- 9:17Speaker 6: If you would, it's Bridge Valley dot edu.
- 9:20Speaker 4: All right, we'll talk again soon. Thanks a lot, Thanks Jeeve,
- 9:23Speaker 4: Doctor kcy Sachs, Bridge Valley. It's nine to sixteen to
- 9:26Speaker 4: a Vland show when five eighty Live is brought to
- 9:27Speaker 4: you part by Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm.
- 9:30Speaker 4: The announcement made at Capital Market on Friday around noontime
- 9:34Speaker 4: about this to send West Virginia program, it's gonna be
- 9:37Speaker 4: a big deal for Charleston. We've already seen that this
- 9:39Speaker 4: is a program that's designed to get people to want
- 9:42Speaker 4: to move here, and there are definitely economic incentives for
- 9:46Speaker 4: people to move to Charles. We've already seen this in
- 9:48Speaker 4: various areas of Greenbrier Valley, Eastern Panhandle, Elkins just to
- 9:51Speaker 4: name a few. We're going to talk to Charleston maryor
- 9:53Speaker 4: Amy Schuler good one about that coming up a little
- 9:55Speaker 4: bit later on. A Timara Boggs will be here as
- 9:57Speaker 4: well from the Charleston Area Alliance. This was a group announcement,
- 10:00Speaker 4: I mean City of Charleston, Knawk County Commission. The presidents
- 10:02Speaker 4: of Marshall and WVU are also involved. So we'll talk
- 10:05Speaker 4: to those folks about that a little bit later on
- 10:06Speaker 4: with Danny Jones is going to stop, but I want
- 10:08Speaker 4: to get a check in with Danny and see how
- 10:11Speaker 4: the reopening of his restaurant on Courier Street. It's now open.
- 10:15Speaker 4: I picked up food from there myself and took it
- 10:18Speaker 4: home on Friday night. Great stuff as always, So we'll
- 10:22Speaker 4: talk to Danny about that. Plus we're gonna introduce you
- 10:24Speaker 4: to a candidate for State Senate after Steven Ashnauer coming

- 13:33Speaker 4: Welcome to the show.
- 13:34Speaker 12: Good good morning, Dave, and doing well this morning?
- 13:37Speaker 4: And what is the district again? What's the number? The
- 13:39Speaker 4: eighth district, the eighth district, and tell us about that district.
- 13:42Speaker 4: So the eighth district is it's a fairly large district.
- 13:46Speaker 4: It includes Roan Clay, southern part of Jackson, northern part
- 13:50Speaker 4: of Putnam, and uh, pretty much the city side here
- 13:54Speaker 4: of Charleston. Okay, all right, so go ahead and get
- 13:58Speaker 4: the elephant out the room here. You're a doctor. What
- 14:00Speaker 4: kind of doctor are you?
- 14:01Speaker 12: So? Primarily practice emergency medicine, but I'm also highly involved
- 14:05Speaker 12: in public health, running the health department here at the
- 14:07Speaker 12: Kenal Charleston Health Department.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I was going to say, for those of you that
- 14:10Speaker 4: are I mean people have probably heard your name in
- 14:12Speaker 4: the news for good reasons. I mean, tell us about
- 14:16Speaker 4: your work there.
- 14:17Speaker 12: So public health is obviously it's a big issue because
- 14:21Speaker 12: it's about all of us. As I tell people frequently,
- 14:24Speaker 12: health is human. It's about every single one of us,
- 14:28Speaker 12: protecting us from diseases, trying to keep food safe in
- 14:33Speaker 12: our communities, and of course about education on what we
- 14:39Speaker 12: can do to protect ourselves should there be a pandemic,
- 14:42Speaker 12: which we all definitely don't want to again, but also
- 14:45Speaker 12: about childhood diseases as well.
- 14:48Speaker 4: So why would a doctor and somebody with your experience,
- 14:51Speaker 4: why would you also want to take this on to
- 14:53Speaker 4: be a state senator?
- 14:55Speaker 12: I think it's very important that we have a broad
- 14:58Speaker 12: breadth of different individuals with skill sets within our legislature. Currently,
- 15:04Speaker 12: we have one physician in the Senate, doctor Tom Takubo,
- 15:07Speaker 12: and he's done a tremendous job there, but to have
- 15:11Speaker 12: more voices that bring a similar background. Not only am
- 15:16Speaker 12: I an er physician where you see the full breadth
- 15:18Speaker 12: of our community, from the richest, the poorest, to the
- 15:22Speaker 12: youngest to the oldest. You truly see the entire community,
- 15:26Speaker 12: but we also have the opportunity within public health to
- 15:30Speaker 12: see what is affecting our community. As you know, West
- 15:34Speaker 12: Virginia is a it's not one of the healthiest states,
- 15:38Speaker 12: and we really really would like to see us move
- 15:40Speaker 12: in a direction towards a healthier state and a safer state.
- 15:45Speaker 4: What's some of the things that if you are elected,
- 15:48Speaker 4: with being that you have this background as a physician,
- 15:52Speaker 4: what were some of the things that you would like
- 15:53Speaker 4: to see implemented.
- 15:55Speaker 12: Believe it or not, The first thing at the top
- 15:57Speaker 12: of my list is economics here in West Virginia. As
- 16:00Speaker 12: you know, we've lost a lot of jobs. I'm also
- 16:03Speaker 12: a small business owner own trophy whitetail hunts on the
- 16:07Speaker 12: Cannel Jackson county line, and it's very difficult when we've
- 16:12Speaker 12: seen so many people have to leave the state for
- 16:14Speaker 12: economic reasons. So actually that's probably at the top of
- 16:17Speaker 12: my list. And of course you can't talk about economy
- 16:20Speaker 12: without education. I had the opportunity to do a lot
- 16:24Speaker 12: of education. Didn't necessarily want to, but I had to
- 16:26Speaker 12: go through it anyway. Bachelor's, doctorate, NBA, All of that
- 16:30Speaker 12: education comes with time and experience. Having an educated workforce
- 16:35Speaker 12: is very important to me. My children all went to
- 16:38Speaker 12: public school here in West Virginia. Very proud of that
- 16:41Speaker 12: we have a good public school system. They need our support,
- 16:45Speaker 12: our support from the community to continue to improve the
- 16:49Speaker 12: offerings that we have. And then, of course there is
- 16:52Speaker 12: the health. That's one of the gorillas in the room
- 16:54Speaker 12: as well, being a state that struggles with obesity, heart disease,
- 17:00Speaker 12: I cancer rates, addressing those issues as well. There's so
- 17:04Speaker 12: many diverse elements from both my career and the needs
- 17:09Speaker 12: of our community that I feel that I can bring
- 17:12Speaker 12: some real world experience to talk to.
- 17:15Speaker 4: You know, doctor Stephen Ashnauer, who is a Republican candidate
- 17:17Speaker 4: for state center. You talked about the health in West Virginia,
- 17:21Speaker 4: but you also said the top of your list was
- 17:23Speaker 4: the economy. And it's always been my belief, and you
- 17:26Speaker 4: can weigh in on this that you'd be surprised what
- 17:29Speaker 4: can happen in the health of our state, or any
- 17:32Speaker 4: state for that matter, if you have a good economy,
- 17:35Speaker 4: because a lot of these things, a lot of these
- 17:37Speaker 4: issues with health simply put go back to a lack
- 17:40Speaker 4: of opportunities through jobs and education and things that you'd
- 17:45Speaker 4: be surprised. It's not to mean people can be unhealthy,
- 17:48Speaker 4: you know, at any age or any walk of life,
- 17:50Speaker 4: but a lot of it does tie back to the economy.
- 17:53Speaker 12: Absolutely, you hit the nail on the head. Economy plays
- 17:58Speaker 12: a tremendous role in what we call social determinants of health.
- 18:01Speaker 12: If you have the ability to pay to go to
- 18:03Speaker 12: a dentist, then you're more likely to get dental care
- 18:07Speaker 12: versus getting to the point that you have dental carries, toothaches,
- 18:11Speaker 12: end up in the er, having to have teeth removed
- 18:13Speaker 12: at a young age. And that's tragic to see someone
- 18:17Speaker 12: lose their teeth by the age of thirty because they
- 18:19Speaker 12: didn't have the means to even go to a dentist.
- 18:21Speaker 12: That's just one simple example. But it's a common example
- 18:24Speaker 12: here in West Virginia. I think of the economy as
- 18:28Speaker 12: a tide. It's the tide that comes in and raises
- 18:31Speaker 12: all ships, including the health ship education. Obviously, if we
- 18:36Speaker 12: have more funds that we can put into education through
- 18:39Speaker 12: a stronger economy, that is going to help our educational
- 18:42Speaker 12: system and also provide additional educational opportunities for our kids.
- 18:47Speaker 12: It's not just about going to college. It's also about
- 18:49Speaker 12: growing our trades and other non college skills that are
- 18:53Speaker 12: essential for employers.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Can we talk to you talking with doctor Stephen Seshnauer,
- 18:58Speaker 4: who is a Republican camp for State Centate. A Dave
- 19:00Speaker 4: Island Show on five eighty Live is bronching in part
- 19:03Speaker 4: by your hometown baseball team, The Charles The Dirty Birds
- 19:05Speaker 4: mentioned earlier. The Birds are finally back at home tomorrow night,
- 19:07Speaker 4: final home stand of the regular season, as they'll be
- 19:10Speaker 4: taken on Gastoni. It's actually a pretty long series through
- 19:12Speaker 4: Sunday at Gomart Ballpark. For tickets, promotion schedule, Dirty Birds
- 19:16Speaker 4: merchandise and more, visit dirty Birds baseball dot com. You
- 19:19Speaker 4: mentioned that your kids went through public school. There's been
- 19:23Speaker 4: a I guess over the last couple of years that
- 19:25Speaker 4: right or wrong, there's been a perception that some of
- 19:30Speaker 4: the folks under the doll maybe don't some don't value
- 19:33Speaker 4: public education. Now I'm not saying all and I'm just
- 19:36Speaker 4: saying what other people have said. You're a big believer
- 19:38Speaker 4: in public education.
- 19:39Speaker 11: Though I am.
- 19:41Speaker 12: I think that it's good to have additional opportunities because
- 19:45Speaker 12: competition can be good. But for most West Virginians, looking
- 19:50Speaker 12: at how rural we are, it's essential that we have
- 19:52Speaker 12: a strong public school system. It would be very difficult
- 19:56Speaker 12: for say a private school to open in Calhoun County
- 20:00Speaker 12: or Work County, where it's very rural, very difficult for
- 20:03Speaker 12: people to get their kids to school. So having a
- 20:06Speaker 12: choice to go to a private school might be good
- 20:08Speaker 12: in Charleston and available, but we don't need to make
- 20:14Speaker 12: that at the expense of our public school system.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Got you, of course, we know that you're a doctor,
- 20:21Speaker 4: so I want to want to learn more about you
- 20:24Speaker 4: the person, though away from the white coat you know,
- 20:28Speaker 4: and away from what you hope to achieve in the legislature.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Give us a little byo on you personally.
- 20:33Speaker 12: So I enlisted in the army at the ripe age
- 20:36Speaker 12: of eighteen and stayed for thirty years. I really enjoyed
- 20:39Speaker 12: my experience in the military because it taught me a
- 20:42Speaker 12: lot of things about life, life lessons that are hard.
- 20:48Speaker 12: Went to war four times, deployed three to Iraq and
- 20:50Speaker 12: thank you for your service, by the way, thank you much,
- 20:52Speaker 12: and once to Afghanistan. And during those those deployments seeing
- 20:58Speaker 12: what the world geopoliticals stages was I think very instrumental
- 21:02Speaker 12: in my education experience. In running a small business here
- 21:07Speaker 12: in West Virginia, we opened Trophy Whitetail Hunts a few
- 21:11Speaker 12: years ago and continue to attract people that many of
- 21:14Speaker 12: our customers have never even been to the state of
- 21:16Speaker 12: West Virginia one time, and it's an opportunity to help
- 21:22Speaker 12: spotlight and showcase our state and how beautiful it is
- 21:25Speaker 12: and how great our people are. The grit and resiliency
- 21:30Speaker 12: that we see in West Virginia is rare compared to
- 21:35Speaker 12: a lot of other areas I've been to. We can
- 21:38Speaker 12: be a very tenacious state, and I want to see
- 21:41Speaker 12: our outsiders that haven't been here and might have a
- 21:44Speaker 12: misconception of the state come here and experience it.
- 21:49Speaker 4: What do you see? What does West Virginia in your
- 21:51Speaker 4: opinion need to do to further market ourselves. And I'm
- 21:56Speaker 4: not talking about just necessarily tourism, and you know, Chelsea
- 21:59Speaker 4: Rubino folks do a great job with that. But I'm
- 22:01Speaker 4: talking about getting people to want to move here and
- 22:03Speaker 4: to stay here, or the people that go through our
- 22:05Speaker 4: school system to want to stay here, whether they're in
- 22:09Speaker 4: the trades, whether they go into a four year institution, whatever.
- 22:12Speaker 4: What can we do to get people doctor to want
- 22:16Speaker 4: to stay here? I mentioned the as sen program. We're
- 22:17Speaker 4: going to talk to may or a good one in
- 22:19Speaker 4: Mara Boggs from the Charleston Area Alliance about that it's
- 22:22Speaker 4: coming to Charleston's already in Morgantown, it's already in eastern
- 22:25Speaker 4: Panhandle on Elkins in the Greenbrier Valley. What can we
- 22:27Speaker 4: do to get more of those people to want to stay.
- 22:33Speaker 12: I went to the business meeting Ethic Greenberg a couple
- 22:36Speaker 12: of weeks ago, and I ask a number of business
- 22:38Speaker 12: owners what are your pain points? And in learning what
- 22:42Speaker 12: the pain points are of businesses that already exist here,
- 22:46Speaker 12: listening to the businesses that are providing the jobs an
- 22:50Speaker 12: opportunity in our economy to find out what it takes
- 22:54Speaker 12: for them to grow and expand to attract other talent here.
- 22:58Speaker 12: We as a state need to be very supportive of
- 23:00Speaker 12: those businesses that are already in existence to grow and
- 23:04Speaker 12: attract people to West Virginia. I think that's one part
- 23:07Speaker 12: of the equation. The other part of the equation is
- 23:12Speaker 12: what is it that other businesses are looking for that
- 23:15Speaker 12: are looking to expand that are not in West Virginia
- 23:18Speaker 12: To attract them here to the state to come and
- 23:20Speaker 12: see the state, and for us as a state to
- 23:23Speaker 12: help them build out the infrastructure where a mountainous state,
- 23:26Speaker 12: things like buildable land can be difficult, infrastructure can be difficult, gas, electric, water,
- 23:32Speaker 12: sewer to develop out sites to attract those businesses here
- 23:37Speaker 12: and the people that they employ.
- 23:40Speaker 4: What do you think West Virginia has going for it
- 23:42Speaker 4: in your opinion?
- 23:44Speaker 12: Obviously, natural resources have always been a huge element for
- 23:48Speaker 12: us Cole Yeah, it's been on the decline, but gas
- 23:52Speaker 12: is definitely on the rise for West Virginia. I think
- 23:56Speaker 12: we have what's going forward as constant improving and favorable
- 24:01Speaker 12: tax structure that is attractive to business, and we need
- 24:05Speaker 12: to continue to mold that tax structure to attract people
- 24:09Speaker 12: to West Virginia. We have gritty, resilient people that want
- 24:13Speaker 12: to stay here and are willing to work. Our wages
- 24:17Speaker 12: compared to many other states are lower, but so is
- 24:20Speaker 12: our cost of living. But West Virginia we have a
- 24:23Speaker 12: beauty and a community that's just hard to match in
- 24:26Speaker 12: other states.
- 24:28Speaker 4: The Democrats, of course, we're in control to West Virginia
- 24:31Speaker 4: for eighty three years. The Republicans have taken over. It's
- 24:34Speaker 4: been in a little over ten years now, and then
- 24:36Speaker 4: we have the super majority followed by the super super
- 24:38Speaker 4: majority copyright day val. So with that, though, can come,
- 24:43Speaker 4: just like with the Democrats, can come from fracturing. You know,
- 24:46Speaker 4: where you have this side, it may be way far right,
- 24:49Speaker 4: this so far this side that may be more moderate.
- 24:53Speaker 4: As a Republican now the ruling party in West Virginia,
- 24:56Speaker 4: how do you balance those things? Because you go in,
- 24:58Speaker 4: you know, and you've got to be able to not
- 25:00Speaker 4: only work with the Democrats on things, but you also
- 25:02Speaker 4: got to be able to work with folks within your
- 25:05Speaker 4: own party. So how do you balance that?
- 25:07Speaker 12: So my thought on it is this, fine, listen to
- 25:12Speaker 12: our constituency. What is our constituency telling us that we
- 25:16Speaker 12: need to be doing. Number One is the we need
- 25:19Speaker 12: to all be focused on the economy, and I think
- 25:21Speaker 12: everybody within both parties will agree on that. Piece two
- 25:25Speaker 12: is focusing on education within our state. I think almost
- 25:29Speaker 12: everybody in the state can agree on that piece of it,
- 25:32Speaker 12: and of course agreeing on infrastructure. If we stay focused
- 25:36Speaker 12: on what matters to the constituency, we won't get off
- 25:41Speaker 12: track arguing over elements that don't move the needle of
- 25:47Speaker 12: West Virginia. And I think it's dangerous to get into
- 25:50Speaker 12: the weeds of being bogged down with issues that don't
- 25:54Speaker 12: move the state forward. So it's focus, focus, focus, focus
- 25:59Speaker 12: on what our constituents are telling us.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Talk about your campaign strategy. I know it's early, you
- 26:05Speaker 4: just announced, you know that you're gonna be running. So
- 26:08Speaker 4: are you a door knocking kind of guy? What are
- 26:11Speaker 4: you gonna What are you gonna do?
- 26:13Speaker 12: So if you look at the map of the eighth district,
- 26:15Speaker 12: the majority of it is very rural. So I've already
- 26:18Speaker 12: been out to county fairs and have several parades on tap.
- 26:24Speaker 12: But what I've learned is that you you do have
- 26:26Speaker 12: to get out in the community because the majority of
- 26:29Speaker 12: my voters in the Republican Party are in these rural
- 26:32Speaker 12: counties where I have lived for the last twenty five years.
- 26:37Speaker 12: That includes talking with going to like the cattle auction
- 26:44Speaker 12: I was there day before yesterday, to where from Jackson
- 26:48Speaker 12: County and Jackson County, going out to where the farmers
- 26:50Speaker 12: are coming to and listening to them. What are your struggles.
- 26:53Speaker 12: And it's a it's a difficult district because it is
- 26:58Speaker 12: so spread out and you only have one real concentration
- 27:01Speaker 12: population here in Charleston, and the rest of it is
- 27:04Speaker 12: pretty rural. So my focus is going to be on
- 27:08Speaker 12: the rural counties because that's the majority of the Republican voters.
- 27:12Speaker 4: You have a website, social media, you want to direct
- 27:15Speaker 4: people to.
- 27:15Speaker 11: I sure do, Sure do.
- 27:17Speaker 12: So We've got the website launched and it's doc E
- 27:21Speaker 12: for West virgin for WV dot com, doc FORWV dot com.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Okay, all right, well I'll be sure and chain in
- 27:27Speaker 4: your course, run social media and all the other things.
- 27:29Speaker 12: Or you will, yes, yes, getting all that wound up
- 27:32Speaker 12: ready for the campaign.
- 27:33Speaker 4: All right, we do a thing we call the final thirty.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Whenever I have a Candida, don I give you thirty
- 27:37Speaker 4: seconds uninterrupted by me, not necessarily timed to tell me
- 27:42Speaker 4: why should people vote for you?
- 27:44Speaker 12: So, fellow West Virginians. I've been serving our state and
- 27:49Speaker 12: our country since i was eighteen years old. We desperately
- 27:53Speaker 12: need servant leaders in both the Senate, the House, and
- 27:57Speaker 12: the executive branch. And what I mean by servant leadership
- 28:01Speaker 12: are individuals that are proven and have experience of putting
- 28:05Speaker 12: skin in the game of serving our state, not for themselves,
- 28:10Speaker 12: but for our constituency, for our fellow citizens, for our mountaineers.
- 28:15Speaker 12: We need to serve West Virginia in the legislature. We
- 28:19Speaker 12: don't need to serve ourselves. We need to listen to
- 28:22Speaker 12: our constituency and we need to take care of our constituency.
- 28:26Speaker 12: I've been taking care of West Virginians since I first
- 28:29Speaker 12: went to war as a physician, and continue in our
- 28:32Speaker 12: emergency departments today and in public health, and wish to
- 28:35Speaker 12: continue to serve you, our fellow West Virginians in the Senate.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Doctor Stephen Ashnauer, Republican in District eight, right, Republican State Senator,

- 31:52Speaker 4: About to enter the whole Ascend West Virginia World. Our
- 31:55Speaker 4: Bogs from Charleston Ery Alliance is here along with Charleston
- 31:58Speaker 4: Maror Amy Schuler. Goodman, A good one, good MANE. I
- 32:01Speaker 4: just changed your name. It's fine, it's Amy. I'll get
- 32:06Speaker 4: Maria right. Good morning, welcome to the show.
- 32:09Speaker 16: Good morning.
- 32:10Speaker 4: So let's explain what the program is to people.
- 32:14Speaker 16: Okay, good morning. It's great to be here with Mayor
- 32:16Speaker 16: Goodwin of you, Dave. The Ascend program is just one piece,
- 32:20Speaker 16: but a very important piece of an economic development strategy,
- 32:24Speaker 16: and it addresses our most pressing issue, which is population loss.
- 32:28Speaker 16: So this program will bring new West Virginians to the
- 32:32Speaker 16: Charles scenario. We're so excited about it.
- 32:34Speaker 4: And Mayor talk about from the city because, as I
- 32:37Speaker 4: mentioned earlier, I mean we had university presidents, Kenawh County Commission.
- 32:41Speaker 4: I mean, you don't do a program like this in
- 32:43Speaker 4: any of the years without a buy in from everybody.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Talk about the city's involvement in this, yeah.
- 32:46Speaker 17: I will, But let me go all the way back,
- 32:48Speaker 17: because you want to talk about buy in. The buy
- 32:50Speaker 17: in and truly it was the belief that Brad and
- 32:54Speaker 17: Elie Smith had in West Virginia and Appalachian and Appalachians.
- 32:58Speaker 17: I mean they sunk twenty five million dollars in to
- 33:01Speaker 17: start this program initially, and you know their vision and
- 33:04Speaker 17: their dream is to make sure it's not just about jobs.
- 33:07Speaker 17: It's the reason why I love the Ascend program. It's
- 33:09Speaker 17: about your life because you and I both know that
- 33:12Speaker 17: a job is fulfilling. My job is fulfilling it it
- 33:15Speaker 17: gobbles up a lot of my life. But also there
- 33:17Speaker 17: are other aspects. And so when you join the Ascend program,
- 33:21Speaker 17: it is about relocating to the Mountain State, but it's
- 33:24Speaker 17: also connecting you to the spaces and places that you'll live,
- 33:27Speaker 17: work and play. And so initially it was started cities
- 33:30Speaker 17: that were now the sixth It's I haven't written down,
- 33:33Speaker 17: but hopefully I can remember them off the top of
- 33:35Speaker 17: my head. It's Morgantown at Shepherdstown, It's Greenbrier Valley, it
- 33:39Speaker 17: is New River Gorge and Charleston and we're so delighted
- 33:43Speaker 17: to be part of this sixty five thousand. By the way,
- 33:46Speaker 17: people want to move here. People want to move here.
- 33:49Speaker 17: We started a roots program with the Charleston Aarrey Alliance
- 33:52Speaker 17: years ago when the Smith Foundation said, you know, hang on,
- 33:56Speaker 17: we're We've got initial cities picked and quite frankly, we
- 34:00Speaker 17: were a little jealous about all that they were doing.
- 34:03Speaker 17: But we know it works. This is a this is
- 34:06Speaker 17: a program and a project that works. You know, it's
- 34:09Speaker 17: twenty thousand dollars in incentives, it's twelve thousand dollars in cash.
- 34:14Speaker 17: It makes a difference.
- 34:15Speaker 3: You know.
- 34:15Speaker 17: When we started the Roots program, I had the opportunity
- 34:17Speaker 17: to interview one of the young women who applied, and
- 34:21Speaker 17: she was living on the other side of the country
- 34:23Speaker 17: and I said to her, so, she said, I want
- 34:26Speaker 17: to move to West Virginia. I've always wanted to move
- 34:27Speaker 17: you know, I have family there and I'd like to
- 34:29Speaker 17: move back. And I said, well, why haven't you? She said,
- 34:31Speaker 17: because I have to rent a U haul and I
- 34:34Speaker 17: have to pay rent, and then I have to pay
- 34:36Speaker 17: a deposit. And those are expensive things. Oh yeah, there
- 34:39Speaker 17: were expensive things. And so moving folks to a place
- 34:42Speaker 17: that they want to be, having that financial incentive is important.
- 34:46Speaker 17: But the most important thing the Ascend program gives are
- 34:49Speaker 17: ascenders is which calls much I like that? Is that connection?
- 34:56Speaker 17: Is that connection? I'm a mayor, but I'm a mom first,
- 34:58Speaker 17: and if my kid went to another city, I want
- 35:00Speaker 17: to want to make sure that they had deep roots
- 35:02Speaker 17: and connection. And that's what Brad and Aali Smith knew
- 35:06Speaker 17: would work. Connect them to their job, but connect them
- 35:09Speaker 17: to the outdoors and the things that make us wild
- 35:11Speaker 17: and wonderful.
- 35:12Speaker 16: And they have a ninety seven percent retention rate in
- 35:15Speaker 16: this program that is unprecedented across the nation, really across anything.
- 35:19Speaker 16: Ninety seven percent of ascenders stay in West Virginia.
- 35:23Speaker 4: So talk about the Okay, somebody's listened to this right now.
- 35:25Speaker 4: They're thinking, Okay, this sounds great. Put it into put
- 35:28Speaker 4: the wheels into motion, Marien, Mayor, how does it work?
- 35:31Speaker 16: Okay, So there's the ascend website. Since Friday, we announced
- 35:35Speaker 16: this at one o'clock on Friday. Since Friday, there's been
- 35:39Speaker 16: one hundred applications to move to Charleston.
- 35:43Speaker 4: West Virginia from all over the country.
- 35:45Speaker 16: All over the country. And I don't have all the
- 35:47Speaker 16: analytics about like which states they're coming from. We'll get
- 35:49Speaker 16: that very soon.
- 35:50Speaker 17: But since Friday, just late Friday, by the way, she
- 35:54Speaker 17: texted me late Friday and said it's up.
- 35:57Speaker 4: That's right, because the announcement was made like midday, twelve,
- 36:00Speaker 4: one o'clock or whatever. It was over at Capital Market.
- 36:02Speaker 4: And so since Friday, and like the mayor said, we'll
- 36:05Speaker 4: just go ahead and say at posts three four o'clock
- 36:07Speaker 4: or whatever when it went up. We've had one hundred
- 36:09Speaker 4: people apply to move here.
- 36:11Speaker 16: That's correct, and so what they now do is they apply.
- 36:14Speaker 16: The application process is not easy. It's pretty extensive. The
- 36:17Speaker 16: ASCEND program managed out a WVU doctor Danny Twilley, Mark
- 36:22Speaker 16: Gavin Will. They have an application process so these people
- 36:26Speaker 16: get interviewed and then the best of the best get
- 36:29Speaker 16: selected to move to West Virginia. So we'll probably see
- 36:33Speaker 16: just realistically, I would say November or December our first
- 36:37Speaker 16: ascender moving here to try.
- 36:38Speaker 17: Sixty five thousand applications since this launch, sixty five thousand
- 36:44Speaker 17: people said, you know what, that looks like a good
- 36:47Speaker 17: deal for me. One hundred and four countries. So we're
- 36:51Speaker 17: not just talking about across the United States. We're talking
- 36:54Speaker 17: about across the world. Because, as you and I both know, Dave,
- 36:58Speaker 17: technology is, you know, it's hard to keep up. There
- 37:01Speaker 17: are so many remote workers. You can literally work anywhere
- 37:07Speaker 17: and live anywhere now, especially in the Mountain State. There
- 37:09Speaker 17: are mayors who had the ASCEND program long before I did.
- 37:13Speaker 17: Used to puff up their chest mar and just walk
- 37:15Speaker 17: around and say we're one of them, because it is
- 37:18Speaker 17: something to be proud of in something and a program
- 37:21Speaker 17: to really puff your chest up about.
- 37:24Speaker 16: And we can't afford not to do this because other
- 37:26Speaker 16: cities are. We're being left behind if we don't do this.
- 37:30Speaker 4: All right, So I'm a person and I have gone
- 37:33Speaker 4: on your website and I have read the information, and
- 37:37Speaker 4: I decide I'm going to do this. What happens to me?
- 37:39Speaker 4: What take me through the program? After I've decided I
- 37:42Speaker 4: want to do this? What do I get? Take me
- 37:44Speaker 4: through the Just use an example.
- 37:45Speaker 16: Sure, So, say you're moving from California and you get
- 37:50Speaker 16: in the application process. You apply the ASCEND program says
- 37:53Speaker 16: you look like you're a good candidate for this, so
- 37:56Speaker 16: you will have an interview and then you'll be notified
- 38:00Speaker 16: if you're selected or not. So, if you're selected, you
- 38:03Speaker 16: sign a contract stating what you will and won't do
- 38:07Speaker 16: for the next two years. And then you move to
- 38:09Speaker 16: West Virginia. And then once you get to West Virginia
- 38:13Speaker 16: you get all these benefits. So you get a shared
- 38:15Speaker 16: working space which is in the Charlestonnaria Alliance headquarters. It's
- 38:18Speaker 16: not on our fourth floor. I invite you or anybody
- 38:20Speaker 16: to come see it.
- 38:21Speaker 2: It's beautiful.
- 38:23Speaker 16: You get access to outdoor recreation opportunities both at events
- 38:29Speaker 16: that the ASCEND Program puts on, and then we'll have
- 38:31Speaker 16: a gear rental area, so if you want to go
- 38:35Speaker 16: stand up paddle board biking but you don't have one,
- 38:38Speaker 16: we'll have those available to you. And then the networking opportunities.
- 38:42Speaker 16: Not only that the Charleston Area Alliance, the City, the County,
- 38:45Speaker 16: all our organizations put on, but the ASCEND Program will
- 38:48Speaker 16: also put on networking opportunities, so you really get in
- 38:53Speaker 16: here and get to know our community.
- 38:55Speaker 4: And I think it's very important, Mayor, and you kind
- 38:57Speaker 4: of alluded to this. You know, a job is eight
- 39:00Speaker 4: hours a day, eight nine hours a day, whatever the
- 39:02Speaker 4: case may be. You got to the job alone is
- 39:05Speaker 4: not going when people are trying to make the decision
- 39:07Speaker 4: where to go, the job alone is not what's going
- 39:10Speaker 4: to bring them there, because there's going to be times
- 39:11Speaker 4: that they're not working. And when we see the people
- 39:15Speaker 4: with this program, they tend to be younger people, people
- 39:18Speaker 4: younger than I am, a lot younger. And this generation
- 39:23Speaker 4: loves experiences. My generation love money. That's all we cared
- 39:27Speaker 4: about was the money.
- 39:28Speaker 17: Okay, big car's big, big big cars, big.
- 39:30Speaker 4: Houses exactly what's over it is, I.
- 39:33Speaker 17: Mean to your point. So your point it is my
- 39:36Speaker 17: kids want a life. The kids now who are graduating school,
- 39:40Speaker 17: they want a life, They want their career to be
- 39:42Speaker 17: a central party.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Probably be better off for it too, you know.
- 39:45Speaker 17: I really do think so. And it is the secret
- 39:49Speaker 17: sauce is. You said it earlier on the radio. I
- 39:51Speaker 17: was listening to my way over. You said, gosh, you is.
- 39:54Speaker 17: You know, You've got w You've got Marshall, got the
- 39:56Speaker 17: state of West Virginia, you got the Charlestonnarry lines, You've
- 39:58Speaker 17: got the city, you got the county, You've boy, everybody's
- 40:01Speaker 17: into it. There's a reason. There is a reason why,
- 40:04Speaker 17: because it works. And this is you know, is there
- 40:08Speaker 17: a silver bowler or anything. No, there is not. But
- 40:11Speaker 17: you know, I can't give credit enough to the Charlestonnary
- 40:13Speaker 17: Alliance for really pulling this together. It's by the way,
- 40:17Speaker 17: I've worked from home. Everybody listening has probably worked from home,
- 40:20Speaker 17: and especially during COVID, there were two people that worked
- 40:23Speaker 17: in the entire city Hall building, Matthew Sutton and myself
- 40:25Speaker 17: for a long period of time. You get lonely, by
- 40:28Speaker 17: the way, y'all, when you're doing remote work you do.
- 40:31Speaker 17: And so what the Charlestonnary Alliance did with Danny and
- 40:34Speaker 17: his team to envision a great co working space to
- 40:38Speaker 17: not only just log in to make some calls, to
- 40:41Speaker 17: maybe host a meeting, but also to connect with other folks,
- 40:44Speaker 17: because if I picked you up and dropped you into
- 40:46Speaker 17: a different city, you'd want to have that. Aaron Noon,
- 40:49Speaker 17: who is also here with us in the Charles from
- 40:51Speaker 17: the Charlesonary Allions. She's not on no a microphone, She's
- 40:54Speaker 17: standing in the corner. They do an up next Charlie
- 40:57Speaker 17: West Boy, that's a great entrance way point for some
- 41:00Speaker 17: of these ascenders who are coming in. How do I
- 41:02Speaker 17: get connected with what's happening or just you know, meet
- 41:06Speaker 17: somebody to go to the gym with, or somebody who
- 41:08Speaker 17: may have a different interest. It is about a job,
- 41:11Speaker 17: but it is about creating a life and finding loves
- 41:15Speaker 17: in the Mountain State. That is the key and the
- 41:18Speaker 17: secret sauce to the Ascend program that Brad and Elie
- 41:21Speaker 17: Smith started.
- 41:22Speaker 4: And again this is the fifth one in West Virginia.
- 41:24Speaker 4: They're in the New River Gorge area, Eastern Panhandle. Six
- 41:27Speaker 4: I'm sorry, six, I'm sorry.

- 43:57Speaker 4: Florida listener here, why did you all do away with
- 43:58Speaker 4: a nine hour football show before, during, and after the game?
- 44:02Speaker 4: I am not in the programming aspect of it, so
- 44:03Speaker 4: I can't really answer that for you. But a decision
- 44:08Speaker 4: was made that we were no longer going to do that.
- 44:11Speaker 4: I will try to get an answer for you. Dave Alan,
- 44:13Speaker 4: Morning Show in a Nutshell says a text. A text
- 44:15Speaker 4: comes in about the president alluding to gun control, an
- 44:18Speaker 4: important multi layered subject concerning a popular political issue among
- 44:21Speaker 4: the listeners. Dave Allen, Eh, we'll get to that a
- 44:24Speaker 4: later date, threats of constitutional violation for the president, no
- 44:26Speaker 4: big deals a text. Appreciate the text. Texas Republicans hate
- 44:30Speaker 4: public schools because they need to be stupid, so they
- 44:34Speaker 4: vote Republican. Why else would a person vote against their
- 44:36Speaker 4: interest in favor of the interest of the upper class
- 44:40Speaker 4: Texas man, you know what would be cool if there
- 44:42Speaker 4: were a program to help teachers and service personnel become homeowners.
- 44:45Speaker 4: Teacher and service personnel owning homes and the communities they
- 44:48Speaker 4: served question mark. I guess we'll have to settle for
- 44:50Speaker 4: tourist tech workers getting the help. Danny Jones is here, hey,
- 44:55Speaker 4: doing man.
- 44:56Speaker 11: Of listening to the show, and one phrase caught me.
- 45:01Speaker 11: The best of the best? Who decides it goes?
- 45:05Speaker 4: And that's the question I should have asked Mara when
- 45:08Speaker 4: she was here. There was a board that that pixies.
- 45:11Speaker 4: Now how that board has picked I don't know. I'll
- 45:12Speaker 4: have Mara on the show or the mayor at some
- 45:14Speaker 4: point and we'll we'll decide that.
- 45:16Speaker 11: I mean, I have lot, I have a lot of
- 45:18Speaker 11: friends in southern California.
- 45:19Speaker 4: We'll get him here.
- 45:20Speaker 11: Well, I's a lawyer. What if he wanted to move here?
- 45:24Speaker 11: He doesn't need an office or what would he be
- 45:27Speaker 11: able to have an office up there?
- 45:29Speaker 4: Yeah, if he wants one. Yeah. I mean this is
- 45:32Speaker 4: all Brad and Elise Smith. I mean that they put
- 45:34Speaker 4: twenty five million dollars into this day. This is their baby,
- 45:36Speaker 4: this is this is not something that these communities did,
- 45:39Speaker 4: They're part of it. But this was Brad and the
- 45:41Speaker 4: least said we want people to come to West Virginia.
- 45:43Speaker 4: Here's twenty five million to make it happen.
- 45:46Speaker 11: It's it's hard, it's hard to do. It's I mean,
- 45:53Speaker 11: I hope it works.
- 45:54Speaker 4: That's what's worked everywhere else so far.
- 45:56Speaker 11: I'm in. I'm all in.
- 45:58Speaker 4: Texas sixty five. It's an interest to move here, question mark. Sorry,
- 46:02Speaker 4: but that raises a little red flag to me, especially
- 46:04Speaker 4: if a lot are for progressive states like California, Illinois,
- 46:08Speaker 4: or New York. A Sudy done before the twenty twenty
- 46:10Speaker 4: election showed how people moved to change the political demographics
- 46:13Speaker 4: from red to purple or blue. News flash, don't think
- 46:16Speaker 4: about moving here to conservative West Virginia and vote progressive
- 46:19Speaker 4: like you did when you're moving from what ruined your state.
- 46:23Speaker 4: Just one let me finish, Just know that West Virginians
- 46:25Speaker 4: will not put up with that, all right, Danny, go.
- 46:27Speaker 11: It's not going to be an issue. If somebody left
- 46:30Speaker 11: Illinois to come in here, to move here, it'd be
- 46:33Speaker 11: to get away from the pension system which is so underwater.
- 46:38Speaker 11: This governor out there wants to run for president. You
- 46:41Speaker 11: ought to see how bad the finances are, not just
- 46:44Speaker 11: in Chicago, but in the entire state of Illinois. It's
- 46:47Speaker 11: the worst in the country.
- 46:49Speaker 4: What do you make of now, the president rather the
- 46:52Speaker 4: meme that went out over the weekend referencing apocalypse now
- 46:55Speaker 4: when he says, you're because he wants to change the
- 46:58Speaker 4: Department of Defense to the Department of War, which is
- 47:00Speaker 4: what it was you know previously, I mean like a
- 47:02Speaker 4: long time ago Stintson. Uh yeah. So, so he says,
- 47:06Speaker 4: and I'm paraphrasing, Chicago is about to find out why
- 47:11Speaker 4: we are calling it the Department of War.
- 47:15Speaker 11: Oh, I just think he's being silly.
- 47:18Speaker 4: Do you think you think that's it? It's not nothing
- 47:20Speaker 4: to be alarmed about, in my opinion. No. Somebody on
- 47:23Speaker 4: one of the Sunday morning talk shows pointed this out. Danny,
- 47:26Speaker 4: what if just say it? Give you for instance, So basically,
- 47:31Speaker 4: President Trump has said, uh, we're willing to go to
- 47:33Speaker 4: war uh for Chicago. And I'm very much paraphrasing. Okay,
- 47:37Speaker 4: what if President Obama would have said, we've got to
- 47:43Speaker 4: clean up pick a city, Nashville, and I am going
- 47:46Speaker 4: to send federal troops into Memphis or into Nashville. Can
- 47:50Speaker 4: you imagine what the what the response would have been
- 47:53Speaker 4: had President Obama said, I am going to send in
- 47:56Speaker 4: federal troops.
- 48:00Speaker 11: Of Chicago is called Inglewood, and that's where the problem is.
- 48:04Speaker 11: And you don't need troops, you need more police officers.
- 48:07Speaker 11: So if they wanted, if President Trump wanted to help,
- 48:10Speaker 11: he could send more. He could ask congres for a
- 48:14Speaker 11: supplement to hire more police to help in the area
- 48:22Speaker 11: called Inglewood, because that's where the problem is. Where I
- 48:25Speaker 11: go in Chicago, near the near the train station, walking
- 48:28Speaker 11: around up on State Street. There's no problem in Chicago.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Yeah, my wife is frequent in Chicago for her job.
- 48:34Speaker 4: And you know, again, it's it's it's it's just those
- 48:36Speaker 4: certain it's certain areas.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Uh.
- 48:39Speaker 4: But if and if he's got them doing in in
- 48:42Speaker 4: Chicago what they were in d C, they're going to
- 48:45Speaker 4: be picking up litter because that's pretty much what they've
- 48:47Speaker 4: done in d C. That's different, and that's not meant
- 48:50Speaker 4: to be disrespectful to the guard by any many stretches
- 48:52Speaker 4: in the foination.
- 48:53Speaker 11: But that's not what their mission is in my opinion,
- 48:57Speaker 11: I don't think their mission of course it held. Then
- 49:01Speaker 11: DC is a federal en.
- 49:03Speaker 4: Clay a little bit different.
- 49:04Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, it is different, and it's the lady said that.
- 49:09Speaker 11: The mayor said it helped, but they don't want ice.
