- 0:02Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred the Zone. Here we are I said earlier,
- 0:06Speaker 1: I said three days from Christmas or two days from Christmas.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Obviously we'll be out tomorrow and on Christmas Day, so
- 0:14Speaker 1: we're out Christmas even Christmas Day, and then back on
- 0:16Speaker 1: the twenty six, hopefully Cameron Parker producers feeling better by then.
- 0:21Speaker 1: He's battling the flu. He still managed to crank out
- 0:24Speaker 1: that outstanding highlight montage with the Christmas music and I
- 0:28Speaker 1: we'll hear it again at the top of the four
- 0:29Speaker 1: o'clock hour in case you missed it. But glad to
- 0:31Speaker 1: have Ronald Savage here alongside producers this afternoon. Coming up
- 0:35Speaker 1: in a few minutes, our final seasonal visits with Greg Tapper,
- 0:40Speaker 1: managing editor Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. We'll talk about
- 0:44Speaker 1: the bowl games that have happened so far involving the
- 0:46Speaker 1: state of Texas. What's to come, of course, obviously in
- 0:50Speaker 1: addition to the bowl games, the college football playoffs, since
- 0:55Speaker 1: there have been four more playoff games, including the log
- 0:59Speaker 1: Worns win and uh so we'll do all that. We'll
- 1:02Speaker 1: hear from the two head coaches in fact, we're about
- 1:04Speaker 1: to here from both Steve Sarkisian of Texas and Kenny Dillingham,
- 1:08Speaker 1: the head coach at Arizona State. We're gonna hear their
- 1:12Speaker 1: comments before we break and get ready for our conversation
- 1:17Speaker 1: with Greg Tepper, but we'll hear other comments from them
- 1:19Speaker 1: throughout the course of the rest afternoon. So let's start
- 1:22Speaker 1: it off. This is This happened just a little while
- 1:24Speaker 1: ago media zoom with the two head coaches, Kenny Dillingham
- 1:29Speaker 1: of Arizona State and Lowrence head coach, see Steve Sarkisian.
- 1:31Speaker 1: They were asked first to give some opening comments, opening statements,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and this is from sark First.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Of all, this is a heck of no honor to
- 1:40Speaker 2: be participating in the Peach Bowl against against Arizona State.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Obviously it being the quarterfinals of the college football playoff,
- 1:50Speaker 2: but to be part of this game is a fantastic
- 1:54Speaker 2: honor and one that you know, we're really proud of
- 1:56Speaker 2: that we've that we've gotten to this point. We obviously
- 2:00Speaker 2: we have a ton of respect for Arizona State and
- 2:02Speaker 2: the job coach Dillingham is done. They're very good football team.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You don't win the Big twelve as we know how
- 2:09Speaker 2: hard that is around here to win a Big twelve
- 2:11Speaker 2: championship and doing it in their first year in the conference,
- 2:14Speaker 2: his second year at Arizona State is uh is a
- 2:17Speaker 2: heck of an accomplishment. You know it I touched on earlier.
- 2:21Speaker 2: You know, they're at plus fourteen in the turnover margin
- 2:24Speaker 2: with on the eight turnovers and they've created I believe,
- 2:26Speaker 2: like twenty two turnovers. Defensively, they pride themselves on running
- 2:31Speaker 2: the ball.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Scataboo is a heck of a player. He's got a
- 2:33Speaker 2: ton of fans in our building. I can tell you
- 2:35Speaker 2: that we didn't know we were getting ready to players
- 2:38Speaker 2: in a state and we've been watching them here for
- 2:39Speaker 2: about the last year and a half. And like this
- 2:41Speaker 2: guy's a monster. Uh and now we've got to try
- 2:43Speaker 2: to figure out a way to stop him. Uh so
- 2:46Speaker 2: uh And and you know, like I said, I think
- 2:48Speaker 2: coach dilly Ham, I've followed his career for for for
- 2:51Speaker 2: some time now, and uh, you know I was I
- 2:53Speaker 2: was kind of in his shoes a while back where
- 2:55Speaker 2: I was kind of the the hot guy. And and
- 2:58Speaker 2: you and you're winning, and you and you and you
- 2:59Speaker 2: keep finding your way up the ladder in the job
- 3:02Speaker 2: that he's done to Arizona State from year one to
- 3:04Speaker 2: year two in this day and age of college football
- 3:08Speaker 2: is extremely impressive, and so we're looking forward to the
- 3:11Speaker 2: opportunities a heck of a challenge, appreciate the invitation and
- 3:15Speaker 2: looking forward to seeing everybody in Atlanta.
- 3:17Speaker 1: All Right, that's long worn head coach Steve Sarkisian's opening
- 3:21Speaker 1: comments from this. Now let's hear from Arizona State Sun
- 3:24Speaker 1: Devils head coach Kennedy Dillingham.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Well, first things first, we're excited as a football program
- 3:29Speaker 3: to be going back to Peach Bowl. Obviously one of
- 3:32Speaker 3: eight teams left in college football. You know that speaks
- 3:35Speaker 3: for itself for everybody who's left playing games when it
- 3:39Speaker 3: comes around New Year's time. In terms of coach Sarkisian
- 3:43Speaker 3: his program, it's remarkable where he's taking that program. I
- 3:47Speaker 3: mean from preseason being picked to win the national title
- 3:50Speaker 3: to following up with playing national championship level football throughout
- 3:55Speaker 3: their transition to the SEC. They just had an incredible season.
- 3:59Speaker 3: He's a guy that I think everybody's on offense has studied,
- 4:04Speaker 3: has watched, has learned from either having the ability to
- 4:07Speaker 3: go meet with them personally or from Afar like myself.
- 4:10Speaker 3: You know, I don't know many people, so I just
- 4:12Speaker 3: kind of have to google things and find things out
- 4:15Speaker 3: different ways. But no, I know our staff, our offense
- 4:19Speaker 3: coordinator and coach Tarkisan have a great relationship and there's
- 4:23Speaker 3: a lot of similarities that they do offensively that they do,
- 4:26Speaker 3: and I just have a lot of respect for their
- 4:27Speaker 3: football program. You know, when when you watch football teams
- 4:31Speaker 3: and you see teams that are very creative but also simple,
- 4:36Speaker 3: you have a lot of respect for that. And their
- 4:37Speaker 3: guys play extremely hard. They have extremely good players that
- 4:41Speaker 3: play extremely hard, which is not fun to play. You
- 4:43Speaker 3: would like extremely good players to not play hard, but
- 4:46Speaker 3: they have the combination of their players are very good
- 4:49Speaker 3: and they play hard, and they're very fundamentally sound across
- 4:52Speaker 3: the board. And this is going to be, Like I
- 4:54Speaker 3: told our guys this morning, this is gonna be a
- 4:56Speaker 3: great challenge for us to compete versus a team that
- 5:00Speaker 3: has spent four years preparing to compete for a national
- 5:03Speaker 3: championship and we're in year two and we're excited for
- 5:06Speaker 3: the opportunity to do it at the Chick fil A
- 5:09Speaker 3: Peach Bowl in Atlanta with eight teams left, eight.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Teams left, as you heard coach Dillingham say. Now with
- 5:17Speaker 1: regard to the Longhorns, Long Orange head coach Steve Sarkisian
- 5:20Speaker 1: was asked about the lack of penalties that his team
- 5:25Speaker 1: had against Clemson after having so many in the SEC Championship.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, Terry, we had a real come to Jesus meeting
- 5:31Speaker 2: after the SEC Championship game when we essentially lost that
- 5:35Speaker 2: game because of penalties, and we just said, we're not
- 5:37Speaker 2: going to do that anymore, and we're going to play
- 5:40Speaker 2: as clean football as we can play, as fundamentally sound
- 5:43Speaker 2: football as we can play, still be aggressive. We never
- 5:46Speaker 2: want to lose our stinger. We never want to lose
- 5:47Speaker 2: our aggressiveness. But we can play smarter. And you know, honestly,
- 5:53Speaker 2: I critique one of the penalties that we got today.
- 5:55Speaker 2: You know, you can't hit the quarterback late, and that
- 5:57Speaker 2: was one of our two penalties Saturday. So we're continually
- 6:01Speaker 2: trying to preach playing smarter football as well as playing
- 6:05Speaker 2: hard and playing tough and playing physical. But quite frankly,
- 6:09Speaker 2: that just came out of a come to Jesus meeting
- 6:11Speaker 2: coming out of the SEC Championship game.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, all right, And then Dillingham was asked about
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know, he follows long line. Arizona State has its
- 6:21Speaker 1: own football tradition, and Frank Cush had been the first
- 6:24Speaker 1: real put Arizona State coach on the map. In fact,
- 6:29Speaker 1: he kind of put him on the map, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: by winning a Peach Bowl back way back in nineteen seventy.
- 6:35Speaker 1: But here's here's the thoughts of Kenny Dillingham about Frank
- 6:40Speaker 1: Kush and his influence on the Arizona State program.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yeah, obviously, Frank Cush, I mean, he's all over our walls.
- 6:48Speaker 3: You know, he is the history of this program. He's
- 6:51Speaker 3: a big piece of the history of this program, and
- 6:53Speaker 3: he's a big piece of the president of the program.
- 6:55Speaker 3: And his toughness that he instilled in football team, in
- 6:58Speaker 3: the football teams that he coached here are something that
- 7:02Speaker 3: those guys still live with. Those guys are better people
- 7:04Speaker 3: because how Frank coach coached and how challenging it was
- 7:09Speaker 3: to play for him, and how much his guys loved him.
- 7:12Speaker 3: And I would hope in ten, fifteen, twenty years from now,
- 7:15Speaker 3: our guys have a very similar feeling about myself and
- 7:18Speaker 3: our staff that we impacted their lives far beyond the
- 7:21Speaker 3: game of football.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah, what was mentioned by somebody else from Arizona State
- 7:26Speaker 1: during all of that was they talked about that first
- 7:30Speaker 1: Peach Bowl that Arizona State played him back in nineteen
- 7:33Speaker 1: seventy and Frank Cush was the coach, and that it
- 7:36Speaker 1: was actually played pretty much in a blizzard. They were
- 7:42Speaker 1: in Atlanta. And I know about this Bowl game for
- 7:46Speaker 1: two reasons. One, my dad was at that game. He
- 7:49Speaker 1: went to the game because it was Arizona State against
- 7:52Speaker 1: North Carolina. I was growing up in North Carolina and
- 7:54Speaker 1: so it was my first recollection really in North Carolina football.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And they won the ACC that year, or shared the title,
- 8:00Speaker 1: and so they got to go to the Beach Bowl.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And my dad went down with a friend he is
- 8:06Speaker 1: to watch that game, and he said they were miserable
- 8:08Speaker 1: just sitting there in the snow, just blanketing Atlanta. And
- 8:14Speaker 1: Arizona State was really really good. North Carolina had a
- 8:16Speaker 1: very good running back named Don mcaulay who ended up
- 8:18Speaker 1: playing in the NFL for several years with the Colts primarily,
- 8:21Speaker 1: but they couldn't get anything going against Arizona State utill
- 8:24Speaker 1: it was pretty late. They lost forty eight twenty six
- 8:26Speaker 1: of that. The other reason why I remember that game,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I watched him from a hospital bed. I was one
- 8:30Speaker 1: of the few times I've been in the hospital in
- 8:32Speaker 1: my life. I was having my tonsils taken out. I
- 8:34Speaker 1: was ten years old, and I remember watching that in
- 8:37Speaker 1: the hospital bed with my mom while my dad was
- 8:40Speaker 1: at that game there in Atlanta. All Right, we'll hear
- 8:44Speaker 1: more from Sark and also from Kenny Dillingham later on
- 8:48Speaker 1: this hour. Up next, we'll visit with Greg Tapper, managing
- 8:50Speaker 1: editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, to talk about
- 8:53Speaker 1: this final weekend of football at the high school level
- 8:56Speaker 1: and also what's going on in the college front in
- 8:58Speaker 1: the state of Texas. When we continue on sports Radio
- 9:00Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
